To Celebrate Earth Day Right At Home
(NAPSI)—The 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22 can be a good time for everyone to take some time to get outside, even if current conditions mean a community event to celebrate isn’t available. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to honor the Earth in your own backyard. “You don’t need to leave home to celebrate Earth Day. Remember, nature starts at your back door,” explains Kris Kiser, President of the TurfMutt Foundation, an organization that encourages outdoor learning experiences, stewardship of green spaces, and care for living landscapes for the benefit of all. “Get outside, mow your lawn, trim bushes, plant a butterfly bush. By becoming a steward of your yard, you are helping the planet. At the same time, you’re supporting your health and well-being, which is increasingly important as families spend more time at home.”

Get outside. Your backyard is an outdoor living room and safe place for pets and kids to play. Science proves spending time in your family’s yard is good for your health and well-being, and so important today as everyone looks for creative ways to stay well while being confined to the home. Researchers have found that people living in neighborhoods with more birds, shrubs and trees are less likely to suffer from depression, anxiety and stress.
Research shows people who gardened for at least 30 minutes a week had lower body mass indexes as well as higher levels of self-esteem and better moods overall. They also reported lower levels of tension and stress.

Make the outdoors a family project. Take your loved ones outside to assess your space. What’s working well? What could be improved? What can you plan to do together in your backyard? Anything needing to be cleaned up? Make a plan to expand or spruce up your yard.

Connect kids to nature. Free, online, do-at-home lesson plans are available from the TurfMutt.com. The environmental education program resources and activities, based on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) principles, give kids the prompts they need to have fun learning about and exploring the nature and science in their own backyards.

Know your climate zone. Learn about climate-zone-appropriate plants, the importance of pollinators, and how backyards can support local wildlife. Conduct a plant inventory to determine what’s currently thriving in your backyard. Match that up against the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map to determine the best types of turf, trees, shrubs, and plants for the climate zone.

Keep pollinators in mind. Your yard is an important part of the connected ecosystem providing much-needed food and shelter for pollinators, such as birds, bees, butterflies, bats, and other creatures. Select a variety of plants that will bloom all year long. The Audubon Society’s database can help determine which birds will be attracted to which plants for unique regions so you can make good choices about what to plant.

Plant, prune or mow. Staying confined to home base doesn’t mean gardening and yard work have to stop. Order garden supplies online or have them delivered from a nearby nursery. Mow the lawn and trim bushes.

When using reusable bags, it’s important to think about how you want your bags packed when you’re putting your groceries on the belt. If you want something in

a separate bag, don’t put it with everything else. If you want all your frozen items together, put them together. Put bread and similar items towards the back. If items are thrown haphazardly onto the belt, there’s just not a lot of room or time for your cashier to bag things optimally. On Monday, March 30, the management at (local apartments) in (local town) responded to an executive order from the Governor indicating there are to be no evictions for 90 days because of the coronavirus crisis and related economic turmoil. In a letter to tenants, the management reminded tenants that failure to pay rent is a violation of their lease and will result in eviction proceedings. The tenants are understandably shocked and angered by this heartless response to the Governor’s attempt to help people in their time of need. At

I can’t believe that people are now leaving their used poop bags along the trails where they walk. What’s the inference here? Do you think someone else will take care of this for you? Come on, dog owners! If you can muster the energy to take your dog on long walks, you can certainly summon the initiative to take your poop bag with you until you can throw it away properly.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Gaius Julius Caesar arrived in the world on July 13, 100 B.C., but contrary to popular belief, it’s unlikely that the future Roman emperor was born by caesarean section. Although the procedure existed at the time, it was usually fatal to the mother and therefore only performed when a pregnant woman was dead or dying, in an effort to save the child. Caesar’s mother, Aurelia, lived until 54 B.C. -- nearly half a century after her son’s birth.

Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial. Pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feel-good hormone serotonin. This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels. Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors – including those who may be divorced or widowed – feel more secure and happy. Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so. • Reduce pain: A recent study found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.” • Feeling of purpose: Caring for an animal not only stimulates physical activity, but it also can give seniors a reason to get up and go, which equates to a feeling of purpose. • Altered focus: Having a pet can help seniors focus on something other than physical or mental health issues and preoccupations about loss or aging. • Increased physical activity: Pets require care, and that interaction can get seniors moving more than if they didn’t have a pet. • Improved health: Ongoing research has found dog owners have lower blood pressure, healthier cholesterol levels and lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t own a dog. • Stick to routine: Caring for pets helps seniors maintain a routine. Having structure after retirement can be important to ward off risk of depression. Staying on top of feeding, grooming and other pet needs also can help prevent cognitive decline. Surely our world will be back to normal this summer ... right? Surely we’ll be able to get out of the house without fearing every person who comes near us. We’ll be able to leisurely wander through the grocery store, which will be stocked as it used to be. We’ll stop to talk to friends on the street and sit in coffee shops and chat. We’ll attend church, go to our meetings, stroll through the neighborhood admiring the flowers and take part in our exercise classes. Surely we’ll be able to do those things again, right? Yes. We will. But first we have to get there. To get back to where we used to be, we have to stay healthy now. We need exercise to stay healthy. Even if you can’t go to a class, you can find plenty of them for seniors on YouTube. Look through the offerings and bookmark a few. Rotate through them on a daily basis so you don’t get bored. Go to youtube.com and put “exercises for seniors” in the search box. Some of them are even broken down by age. We need to stay mentally healthy as well, despite the television news. Check the Good News Network online [www.goodnewsnetwork.org] for positive, uplifting stories. You also can put “good news” in your browser search box. It’s been difficult to get grocery store deliveries in a lot of areas because they have little stock. However, if you get delivery of your prescriptions (many pharmacies are providing this service now), call to ask whether they can add a few things to your order. Many drugstores carry soups, crackers, milk, canned fruits and vegetables, bottled water and snacks -- some even carry a limited supply of fresh fruit.

Husband Starting Radiation Treatment --DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband is about to start radiation treatment for stage one cancer on his vocal chord. Does radiation negatively affect the immune system the same way chemotherapy does? Should I be looking out for people who don’t vaccinate? -- H.T. ANSWER: Radiation can affect the immune system when it is given to large areas of the body, since the immune system cells are largely sensitive to radiation. Whole-body radiation is rarely used now, except in people planning for bone-marrow transplant. By contrast, localized radiation does not adversely affect the immune system to anywhere near the degree that chemotherapy can, since the bone marrow, where the immune system cells live, is diffuse throughout the large bones of the body. As far as avoiding unvaccinated individuals, people who are unvaccinated and who are healthy do not pose a risk. It is in an outbreak of vaccine-preventable disease (there have been localized outbreaks of measles and mumps in the past year, and there are seasonal outbreaks of influenza) that unvaccinated people are much more likely to be infectious. So anyone with immune system disease (such as chemotherapy or whole-body radiation) should avoid people with potentially infectious illness. Caregivers of people with severe immune disease certainly should be immunized according to current guidelines. Even elderly people whose caregivers are immunized for flu get flu less than those whose caregivers are not. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I know women who have had double mastectomies in order to reduce the risk of cancer. It seems extreme, but I guess it depends on the evaluation of risk. Are prophylactic hysterectomies done for similar reasons? It used to be routinely done when a woman had passed her reproductive years. I’m interested in your take on this. Will health insurance cover these types of surgeries, and if not, how expensive are they? -- S.B. ANSWER: Prophylactic mastectomies -- that is, surgery to remove the breasts in order to avert a breast cancer diagnosis -- are a reasonable choice for some women at very high risk of breast cancer, especially those with a family history of breast cancer who have an identifiable genetic predisposition, such as one of the BRCA gene mutations. This decision should be made carefully and in consultation with her doctors, usually an oncologist and a genetic counselor. I have very little experience with this in my own patients, fortunately, but I understand that in the case of women with very high genetic risk, it usually is covered by insurance, if it is the consensus of the treating physicians and the patient that she should proceed. Hysterectomy -- the removal of a uterus -- is not done routinely today the way it was decades ago. They are removed for disease, either benign or malignant. However, the removal of both ovaries and Fallopian tubes, called a bilateral oophorectomy and salpingectomy, is performed in some women at high risk for ovarian cancer. In fact, women with the BRCA mutations may consider both a prophylactic double mastectomy and a prophylactic bilateral oophorectomy and salpingectomy, since BRCA mutations increase risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer (as well as other cancers). The Butlers: A Family on the Frontlines By Amanda Dudek
W
hen the COVID-19 situation began developing in the United States, Michael and Shanna Butler of Honeoye knew that change was coming to their family. Michael Butler, an ER nurse with Thompson in Canandaigua, is also a flight paramedic and had been activated and sent to Texas about three weeks before greater restrictions were put into place. He made it home to his family just two days before bases were shut down in Texas and New York schools closed. “Things closed around us,” said Shanna Butler. “The hospital heightened awareness and educated their nurses. Our attitude was that we were going to be okay and make it through.” Once the Governor began to make some major changes, things shifted. “They were like, ‘This could be a pandemic,’” recalled Shanna. “Their personal protective equipment (PPE) became more prevalent, and this was becoming very real.” At the beginning of the second week of the shutdown, Michael came home, and the two made a serious decision. “We decided that we were going to close our house down at that time and start protecting at the first responder level,” explained Shanna. “Everyone in the ER was wearing a mask all Michael Butler and son the time. They have a separate ICU for COVID-19 patients, as well.” Changes came for Shanna and Michael and their two children, ages 11 and 10, as well. “My husband’s shoes stay outside our home in a separate tote, and he sanitizes before he gets out of the car,” said Shanna. “He has one pair of sandals he switches into, and he completely disrobes down to his underwear by the door on our hardwood floor. His clothing stays there to be washed, and he showers in a separate shower from the family. Although he is around us, we were no longer able snuggle, hug, sit on laps and things like that.” Although their situation has changed because Michael has recently been activated, Shanna well remembers the past few weeks. “It was very hard for our children,” she shared. “They are used to ‘losing’ Michael to activation, not when he is in the house. When you cannot express affection physically that is very hard for kids. They were nervous and worried for their father’s safety.” She noted it was not unlike having her husband deployed, except now she is filling both the “single” parent and teacher roles. “It has been a challenge being at home,” she acknowledged. Shanna is a TA at Honeoye Central School, the president of its PTA, owner of a local dance studio and very involved with her community. “Schools are planning to roll out new curriculum on April 15th,” she said. “This means teaching brand-new lessons remotely. It is difficult for some of our families to shift to life around a tablet or computer.” As a local business owner, Shanna is facing yet another challenge: creating her own dance studio website. “I have to give content,” she explained. “We have our upcoming dance recital which cannot be delayed too long without running the risk of costumes no longer fitting, scheduling conflicts and other issues.” Shanna, who noted her wonderful landlord helped with April, is feeling torn. “This is tough on everyone,” she explained. “If you

are not working, how do you pay for dance classes, and how do I balance understanding with keeping my doors open? This is a business for me, but I am all about my community. I care about my families.” It is easy to see why. Shanna Butler and daughter “The community support has been incredible for me as a business owner, buying gift certificates to my dance studio,” shared Shanna. “I have also had quite a few people reach out, ask after my kids, offer support, ask how they can help.” “We are all in this together,” said Shanna. “As a PTA, we just launched a project with shirts we created in collaboration with Paul Kelly and PK Creations. They say, ‘Reflect your hope, not your fear. Honeoye Strong.’ These are to help students financially. Our town held a virtual Easter Egg Hunt, and my children and I made signs to show people they are not alone.” Shanna encourages others to reach out to essential workers and families, too. “People need to feel they are not alone,” she said. “They do this because it is their passion. Still, it really helps when someone says, ‘Thank you. I am thinking about you, and I will help you in whatever way I can.’” To fellow moms everywhere, Shanna encouraged, “You got this! Go be with your family and enjoy your kids. No one knows what is going to happen, so don’t try to forecast how things are going to be. Just do the best you can, and live fully in this moment.”

However, my daughter told me to stop letting him out, because she says pets can get coronavirus, too. Is Dodger in danger? Could he get it and spread it to me? – Darlene B., Springfield, Massachusetts DEAR DARLENE: Currently, no pets within the U.S. are known to have contracted the coronavirus. A tiger at the Bronx Zoo reportedly tested positive for COVID-19 (and six more tigers are showing symptoms). But there’s very little data to work with right now. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not have definitive evidence that pets can contract COVID-19, they are playing it safe and urging owners to protect their pets from exposure to the virus. So you should, too. You don’t know where Dodger goes when he’s out, so you don’t know if he is being exposed to this virus or other viruses or bacteria that are much more easily contracted and can cause serious illness. Keep him inside and find ways to keep him from losing his mind. That includes spending more time playing with him, making sure he has plenty of toys, and giving him scratching and climbing spots, plus a hideaway. If his behavior gets worse, contact the veterinarian -- Dodger may need to take medication to calm him down for the short term. Also, because he’s been outside, you need to take precautions for yourself. Wash your hands after petting or picking up Dodger, and after cleaning his litter box. Wash his food and water bowls daily in hot soapy water. Here’s to both of you staying healthy and safe!

2018. He was emaciated, had mange and was terrified. I brought him home as a foster but officially adopted him one month later. Sophia was given to us by a friend this February. We weren’t expecting her, and it took a couple weeks for Ali to accept her. Sophia was only 10 lbs. so I was worried he’d accidentally hurt her. He had never met such a small, brave puppy before. Sophia is gaining 2 pounds a week, so she’ll probably be bigger than him! Having two dogs is not only fun, but it’s good for them too. They’re best friends forever now. ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.
