WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES Think of small business sponsorships when putting together school- or clubbased fundraisers.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson
Body & Mind ____________________21
* “I use curbside pickup for my groceries these days. I keep two large laundry baskets in the hatchback of my vehicle. Any bags go in the baskets, so it’s easy to transport them into the house and keep contact to a minimum. When I’m done unloading and wiping down, I can spray out the laundry baskets and let them dry in the sun for next time. Can’t be too careful.” -- T.E. in Virginia
Classifieds ____________________25
Employment ____________________24
* “Stay ahead of the drain: Pour a tea kettle of boiling water down the drain once a month, or if you notice the drain slowing. The hot water can break up material collecting inside the drain. Half a cup of baking soda added to the water will absorb any odors that are building.” -- Colepepper Plumbing in California
Give & Take ____________________12
Home Services _____________________4
Hometown Events _____________________11
* “I color code my plants by their light needs. The closer the pot color is to red, the more light it needs. For instance, my lavender is in a red pot -full sun. I have a nice potted citronella that likes part sun, so it’s in a lime-colored pot (yellow-green) and my indoor pots are plum. I have a lovely rainbow of plants!” -- Y.S. in Arizona
Kidz Korner ____________________22
Pet Place ____________________23
* A hanging shoe rack is a handy place to keep office supplies and school supplies for the whole family. Pencils, markers, assignment cards, and even papers. You can give each person a row, or label the pockets.
Puzzle Answers ____________________20
* There’s a lot of decluttering going on across the country right now. Here’s a pro tip: For seasonal items, if you didn’t wear it last season, consider selling or donating. Same applies if it’s a specialty item (skiwear, hiking boots, formalwear) that hasn’t been used for more than two years. Many people keep items that are on the expensive side, even though season after season goes by without the item being used. If you rationalize keeping the scuba suit, plan a scuba trip!

Need a Little Hope? Let These Four Words Pull You Through! Recover Newsfeeds tend to focus on negatives. Focus instead on the number of those recovered. Check it out thanks to Johns Hopkins at https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html. That number will one day overtake the others, and on that “Flip Day,” let’s remember to celebrate!
Faith We depend on each other, and these bonds of trust draw us together as a community. Have faith in your friends, family and neighbors and in the incredible compassion of strangers. At the same time, be faithful to reach out to those depending on you. Phone calls, food, check-ins and cheerful words go farther now than ever. Don’t forget: a smile and wave are a safe way to bridge six feet!
Calm Remain calm and clearheaded whether you are managing your portfolio or purchasing groceries. The stock market always recovers, and our country’s supply of vital goods is strong. Panic selling and panic buying are not in the best interests of you or your community.
Support Local businesses need your support more than ever to keep local communities strong. Order takeout from local restaurants, buy goods from local businesses online or purchase gift cards to them and don’t forget to pay your gym membership. There is no better time to put “We local business” into action! Share this message and spread some hope!

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS
CLEVER WAYS TO USE LEFTOVERS CREATE NEW MEALS. Using leftovers does not mean eating the same exact meal a second time. Ingredients can be utilized in new ways. For example, a roast chicken can be broken down and the meat can be used for fajitas on another night. Leftover tomato sauce and meatballs from a Sunday dinner can be turned into an impromptu chili with the addition of beans and peppers.
HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You still might have to deal with some lingering confusion that marked a recent workplace situation. But for the most part, you should now be well on your way to your next project. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new commitment might demand more time than you’d expected to have to give it. But rely on that special Bovine gift for patience, and stick with it. You’ll be glad you did. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re earning the admiration of a lot of people who like the way you handle yourself when your views are on the line. Even one or two of your detractors are being won over. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking your responsibilities seriously is what you do. But ease up on the pressure gauge, and make time for much needed R & R. Start by making this weekend a “just for fun” time zone. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Some recently uncovered information might make a change of plans inevitable. If so, deal with it as quickly as possible, and then find out what went wrong and why. What you learn might surprise you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Aspects favor moving carefully and deliberately when making any significant changes. Could be there are more facts you need to know, which you might overlook if you rush things. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A problem neighbor might be looking to goad you into an action you don’t want to take. Ask someone you both respect if he or she would act as an impartial arbitrator for both of you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A recent workplace accomplishment hasn’t been overlooked by those who watch these things. Meanwhile, start making travel plans for that much-too-long-deferred trip with someone special. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Those money matters continue to move in your favor. Now would be a good time to start putting some money back into the house, both for esthetic as well as economic reasons. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A changing workplace environment can create job pressures. But, once again, follow the example of your birth sign and take things a step at a time, like the sure-footed Goat you are. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Cheer up. You could soon have the funds you need for your worthy project. Your generous gifts of time and effort are well known, and someone might decide it’s time to join with you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your inner scam-catcher is right on target, and you’re absolutely right to reject that “too good to be true” offer. Meanwhile, something positive should be making its way to you. BORN THIS WEEK: You are generous, and also sympathetic to people who find they need the help of others. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS ORDER DELIVERY: It’s still possible to enjoy foods from your favorite local restaurants. Many restaurants that had not previously done so have begun to offer delivery services, be it curbside or at-home, and this can provide a great respite for families who have had to cook three meals a day at home for their entire families for extended periods of time. Curbside delivery has made it possible to get takeout meals without compromising social distancing recommendations.

Yancey’s Fancy Finds Opportunity for Generosity By Amanda Dudek
E
very year around Mother’s Day, Yancey’s Fancy holds its much anticipated Tent Sale, a huge event held under a very large tent filled with their artisan, gourmet and award-winning cheeses. These delectable delicacies are sold at a hefty discount, $1 a wedge, for example, rather than their $5 or $6 average retail price. This year, due to coronavirus restrictions, Yancey’s Fancy will be not be able to have a tent sale, so they are putting their cheeses to even better use.
Yancey’s Fancy staff crafting its award-winning cheeses! “We have been looking for a better way to utilize the cheeses we usually include in our Tent Sale,” shared Michael Best of Yancey’s Fancy, a New York artisan cheese maker for over 60 years. “This year, the COVID-19 situation has made it impossible to sponsor a large gathering like our annual tent sale. We realized that restrictions on large gatherings are likely to go into the rest of the spring and into early summer and quite possibly, it could go beyond that.” In the face of this loss, Yancey’s Fancy decided to do something they had been wanting to do for years: they decided to donate this enormous amount of cheese to those in need. “We have wanted to get this cheese into the hands of food banks for a while now,” said Best. “We know there are a lot of people out of work and in need right now, so we thought it best to donate what we would have sold at the tent sale to the local food banks and pantries and other charitable organizations that can put the cheese to good and immediate use.” Yancey’s Fancy reached out to FeedMore, an organization which includes food banks in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, and Niagara Counties and FoodLink. “We saw there was a need and that food banks were starting to ask for donations, so I made a call and asked if we could talk to someone about donating some product,” said Best. “We were referred to FoodLink Rochester. They realized Yancey’s Fancy products include many the amount we had to give, unique and delicious flavors like its and they were more than Steakhouse Onion Aged willing to share with others Cheddar Cheese! like their sister branch in Buffalo.”

Yancey’s Fancy has also been able to help the Meals-on-Wheels program in Alden, which currently serves approximately 80 clients. “Not all Meals-on-Wheels programs are covered under public funding,” explained Best. “The program in Alden is primarily funded through fundraisers. They go and purchase the food themselves. We are hoping they will not have to go Yancey’s Fancy hand dips its and purchase so much of it specialty artisan cheeses! now, resulting in more product on the shelves for others and fewer, shorter trips to the stores for them.” The Alden Meals-on-Wheels program picked up several cases of Yancey’s Fancy cheeses just weeks ago. “They are taking our donated product and cooking with it,” shared Best. “They can turn that product into a lot of meals. They make macaroni and cheese, soups, sandwiches, potato dishes and more. We’re told recipients have been thrilled to receive a premium product.” Yancey’s Fancy isn’t finished giving. FeedMore picked up their first load of donated cheeses last week, and FoodLink picked theirs up this week. These agencies will continue to pick up while there is need. While recognizing that many are already caring for those in need, Yancey’s Fancy hopes to encourage other companies which have product to reach out and give generously. “We know that our product is going to good places,” said Best. “We are grateful for these opportunities to help those in need during this crisis, and we hope others are inspired to do the same.”

I would like to thank my neighbors, the Henslers, for making a beautiful mask for me to wear. I appreciate your kindness and thoughtfulness. - JM Harris Kudos to the wonderful staff at the Teresa House for keeping the Comfort Home opened during this pandemic. The 2 residents are very fortunate to have such a caring group of Volunteers and Nurses who continue to shower them with love and attention. Thank you for your kindness. It shows in everything you do. Stay safe, stay well, and stay hopeful.
I would like to know why people who are nonessential workers are still going to work and possibly exposing their family members and other people? I understand people must work, but if we do not do our part, we will never get out from under this. Please let us do our part stay home, so I do not lose a family member. Thank you. I do not understand why some people must sit in their apartments and watch the coming and going of their neighbors or take it upon themselves to play parking lot police. I think that there are some people who are not meant for complex living. Just because they are a frustrated, miserably old woman. Please do not take it out on your neighbors. I am sad that our Village DPW does not fill potholes. They are not plowing snow nor working in parks nor tree trimming. The least they could do is fill the potholes. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

This is to the police officers who read the paper. I understand you need to concentrate resources in larger areas like the cities, but on the country roads, people are literally (and I am not exaggerating) going 100 mph down the roads. I was driving going 60 mph and got passed by two people going over 80 mph at least. This happens every day now because they think they will not get caught, and I, for one, am sick of hearing the rev of engines going up and down my road and the main road.

With a son in a group home and other relatives in rehab and senior facilities, we so appreciate those who care for our dear ones, keeping them safe and healthy. We thank those who go above and beyond normal duties to keep our son in a Heritage Christian Home, actively engaged in jobs and artwork to keep him stimulated in an at-home environment, along with photos and reports on his well-being. A million thanks to our direct care pros who are on the front lines like other essential services such as groceries, pharmacies, and transportation as well as to our older son who, among millions, deliver tons of stuff to our homes and businesses.
A big and grateful thank you to the man who was in front of me at the Tim Hortons in Batavia on Lewiston Rd. on April 11th, 2020. He paid for my bill. I was there picking up gift certificates for my family for Easter. Little did he know he not only paid for me but for my family. So altogether you paid for eight grateful people. I know that God will bless you for your kindness, and I cannot say thank you enough. Stay safe and healthy and thank you again.
This needs to be addressed. To all the people ignoring the rules and going out, what are you trying to prove? Good for you; you are risking others catching the virus. People pack into the markets and ignore the six-foot rule as well. I am disgusted that you who still go out to gatherings publicly brag in line for others to hear how ‘cool and defiant’ you are being. I literally heard a woman scoff and say, “Well, I’m not staying home.” Guess what? You and the people like you are the reason we need alerts to our phone telling us to stay in. Thanks for lessening the chances of spreading it. Stay home. As the ad says, “Be apart now so we can be together later.”
Responding to Mind your Business: I agree with your post. It does not matter where some live, whether it be in a condo, or a complex apartment, or in a house. Some people are just a piece of work. They think they own the neighborhood. They monitor everything...and everyone. It is truly sad that they do not have a life that they resort to being like they are. They become the town criers as it were. Since they have no friends or family that really want anything to do with them, they take on the job of poking their noses in everybody else’s business. That makes them think that they are important, when in actuality, no one wants to be around them, nor do they respect them. Every neighborhood has someone like that, I guess. As hard as it may be, do not let it bother you. They love it when it does. Stay well.
Regarding Painted Rocks. I saw one of them the other day, and it was so adorable! But from more than 10 feet away, it does look like another piece of trash. I agree that, at the park while enjoying nature, it is nice to see nature and not what looks like trash on the ground, even if it is cute close up.

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Stretching Pet Food While in Quarantine DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Because I was possibly exposed to COVID-19 at the grocery store where I work, I have to stay home for 14 days. About three days into my quarantine, I realized that the dog food for my mixed-breed dog “Corky” was running low. I don’t have any family nearby, and I don’t want to make my co-workers nervous by asking them to bring a bag of dog food over. I thought about ordering from that online pet food delivery service, but I think it will take too long. What can I do to tide Corky over? –- Sara J., White Plains, New York DEAR SARAH: I feel for ya! My family and I are currently quarantined, too, and we’re finding online ordering of staples and pet food to be challenging. Take stock of exactly how much dry dog food you have left -- literally measure it out cup by cup into a container. Divide the total cups by the number of scoops per day that you give your dog. If the bag has less dry food than you’ll need for 11 more days, you can stretch it out and make sure Corky gets enough calories by combining his dry food with fresh food. Unseasoned, cooked rice and oatmeal, veggies like peas and carrots (but not onions, garlic, grapes or avocado), chicken, beef or salmon (unseasoned) are all safe and healthy options. Replace half to all the kibble per meal with a fresh alternative. Many communities are also spinning up “helping hand” services. Check the website of your local government, online community pages and even the local library’s site to find out if you can contact someone to drop off dog food. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

MOMENTS IN TIME On April 29, 1992, a jury in the Los Angeles suburb of Simi Valley acquits four police officers who had been charged with using excessive force in arresting black motorist Rodney King. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Trip to Supermarket Brings New Challenges It occurred to me the other day that I haven’t been eating right. It’s been difficult to find food in my stores, and it’s been difficult to work up the courage to go out, fearing I might get too close to someone who is sick. It also occurred to me that not eating right was bad for my immune system, should I need to fight off an illness. I began going out just before my nearest store closed at night, dashing in for one or two items, using the self-checkout, and fleeing out the door with my haul. That’s assuming my two items were actually on the shelves. But now, in the nick of time, two stores have restarted pickup service, after having cancelled it for over a month. I place the pickup order online, select a time slot two days in advance, and drive there to have my groceries put in the car. It works, even if there are a lot of substitutions of items and a few items out of stock. Here’s a thought: Do you have a supplemental Medicare policy or Medicare Advantage? Does it cover meal delivery service, perhaps Meals on Wheels? Some do. Coverage might only apply at certain times (if you’ve just had surgery or have a medical condition), but a lot of rules are changing now. It wouldn’t hurt to check your policy. Easy ways to volunteer… and give back to your community Millions of people across the globe volunteer every day. Without the selfless efforts of volunteers, many charities would be forced to cease operations. In fact, a 2017 study from the charitable community membership organization Independent Sector estimated that the labor provided by volunteers is worth roughly $193 billion per year in the United States alone. But volunteering can be as beneficial for volunteers as it can for the organizations they help. For example, the Mayo Clinic Health System notes that research has indicated volunteering leads to lower rates of depression while providing individuals with a sense of purpose. Volunteering can be especially beneficial for adults over age 60, with the MCHS noting that older volunteers experience greater increases in life satisfaction and greater positive changes in their perceived health as a result of volunteering. With so much to gain from volunteering, it’s no wonder that so many people across the globe volunteer. According to the United Nations Volunteers program, global estimates place the number of worldwide volunteers at 970 million. That’s nearly three times the population of the United States and more than 26 times the population of Canada in 2018. It’s never been easier to volunteer and begin helping your community. Adults and children who want to join the nearly one billion strong global volunteering community need not look far to get involved. The Corporation for National Community Service notes that the following are some easy ways to volunteer in your community. · Serve meals at a local shelter or community kitchen. · Sign up to work as a tutor or mentor with a local afterschool program. · Help adults find the right professional opportunities by hosting a résumé writing/review workshop and conducting practice interview sessions. · Work in conjuction with a local food pantry to organize a food donation drive. · Volunteer to help the environment by working with local, state, or national park services to beautify parks and/or a local community garden. · Work with a local emergency response organization to produce and distribute disaster-preparedness kits. · Help fellow community members save money by collecting and sharing information about free tax-preparation services. · Read to students or seniors- contact a local community or senior center. · Volunteer at an animal shelter.
When it comes to volunteering, the opportunities are as endless as the benefits of giving back to your community. GB19B381 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

festivities. Not only does it add for some fun and color, but will remind your child everyone is there to celebrate them on their special day. Have kids pick a theme; whether it’s silly hats or hair, or their craziest mismatched outfit, inspire a spark of creativity and let kids reveal their looks to one another at the start of their call. It’s sure to guarantee some laughs and serve as a talking point and good distraction.
With social distancing in place, gathering a large group together whether at home or in a public setting for a birthday party isn’t necessarily an option. Have no fear though! With the right ingenuity and the aid of video calling software, those much needed social interactions and birthday celebrations are still viable! While bowling or pizza parties may be off-limits for the time being, teleconferencing can allow families to come together even through the screen. Grandma can log on to join in with singing happy birthday and watch your little one blow out candles, and cousins & friends can watch them open presents while sending virtual cards. Not only does this maintain social distancing protocols, but allows for engagement and serves as a reminder that birthdays can still be fun occasions despite everything going on.
Virtual parties can come with their own RSVPs emailed out ahead of time, and consider bringing in any of those DIY crafts you may have been trying out on your own! While your kids may not be able to hang out with their friends in person, they can still get together to do some crafts, tell some jokes, or bring some levity into staying at home. Friends and relatives can read birthday cards aloud and express birthday wishes all from the safety of their own homes.
Host a virtual karaoke party or girls night-in featuring at-home manicures for teens while they cue up their favorite music and celebrate their birthdays at home but still with friends. Live-streaming a movie together (with the right extensions) can make up for that birthday trip to the theater that got sidelined—plus you can never go wrong with popcorn!
Adults shouldn’t feel left out—hosting a game night or even a couple of hours of conversation through voice call can ease that sense of isolation, and sometimes there’s nothing better than getting the game together to reprise their own rendition of Happy Birthday. Birthday parades with convoys are all the rage right now. Set the stage with a birthday yard sign or banner for the boy or girl of the hour. Call Penny Lane Promotional Products at 585-226-8111 to order yours today!
While our children’s birthdays (and ours!) may be celebrated differently this year, it’s important to highlight how close we all are, no matter the distance between Don’t forget to decorate! Have yourself us. Dig out those party hats and streamers and your guests pull out all their finest and make birthdays memorable ones—for birthday party décor to add to the all the right reasons!

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Researchers Working on Cure for Herpes --DEAR DR. ROACH: If a person has been exposed (verified by blood test) to herpes 1 and 2, can that person be a blood donor? Could a person catch herpes by sitting on a toilet seat that has been used by an infected person? Are scientists working on a cure for herpes? -- Anon. ANSWER: There remains a stigma against people with genital herpes, which is almost always caused by herpes simplex virus type 2. However, most people with genital herpes will not have major disruptions to their lives provided they take some precautions. First off, a person with herpes simplex virus type 1 (about half of the population between ages 18-49, higher in older people) or HSV-2 (about 12% of the same population) certainly can donate blood. Second, being exposed doesn’t guarantee infection. Third, blood testing is not perfect. Fourth, getting any kind of sexually transmitted infection from a toilet seat is very unlikely. Herpes viruses have a very difficult time getting through intact skin, which is why most exposures come through mucus membranes, especially of the genitals and mouth. There is a type of herpes (usually HSV-1, occasionally HSV-2) in wrestlers, called herpes gladiatorum or “mat herpes,” and it can be transmitted from person to person through skin-to-skin contact, especially if the skin is raw or chafed. Once a person has herpes of either variety, there is no cure. The virus stays in the nerve cells. There is extensive work being done both on preventing transmission and curing existing infections, but herpes viruses are very good at escaping the immune system. This makes herpes difficult to treat. ***

side effects from long-term use of Claritin-D? My son has been using the medication continuously for about nine years. He has had allergy shots, which were minimally helpful. He cannot use nasal rinses or sprays because they cause nosebleeds. He does have some sleeping problems, but since he’s been taking Claritin-D for so long, it’s hard to tell if that medication is the cause. -- M.S. ANSWER: Claritin-D is a combination of the antihistamine loratadine and the decongestant pseudoephedrine. Loratadine is considered safe in most people. Pseudoephedrine is safe for younger people, but it can raise blood pressure and pulse, and in older men, can cause urinary symptoms. He might try plain Claritin, which is just the loratadine, and save the Claritin-D for his worst days. Less pseudoephedrine is probably better.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I read your comments to I.T. with interest, as I had my gallbladder removed way back in 1968. I feel you left out a side effect that follows the procedure for many patients: the “dump” syndrome, or diarrhea. This result has plagued me and several others for years. I found some relief by taking cholestyramine before eating. -- J.C. ANSWER: That’s a very good point, and one I did not highlight. “Dumping syndrome” refers to bile being delivered to the intestine suddenly, causing diarrhea. It isn’t common, fortunately, and I, too, have found that cholestyramine can be very effective, in addition to eating smaller, more-frequent meals.
