Cooped Up Toddlers Keep Tormenting Pets

Active Living 50+ ____________________22

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My toddlers will not stop tormenting our pets! They chase the cat and pull his tail; they dive-bomb the dog and scare her every time she lays down for a nap. I’m tired of chasing after them and trying to stop them. What else can I do? Lock the pets in another room? -– Susanna Y., Ogden, Utah

Auctions & Antiques ____________________18 Automotive _____________________11 Body & Mind ____________________13 Classifieds ____________________25

DEAR SUSANNA: Let me ask you this: Why should the pets be punished every time your toddlers misbehave? Your dog should be able to nap peacefully in her own doggie bed, and the cat should be able to sit quietly at the window. That’s the ideal, anyway. I know it’s difficult, especially since all of us are cooped up right now. But, consider that toddlers tend to react just as well to a punishment/reward system as most dogs (and some cats) do, if not more so. Make it clear that your kids are not to torment the pets -- and that if they do, there will be consequences. As to the consequences: What are their favorite things to do? Play with specific toys? Watch certain Netflix Kids cartoons? Eat candy? They may be very young, but threatening to (temporarily) remove one of their favorite activities or snacks can be effective. And of course, there’s always the tried-and-true time out. I wish I had more advice to give you. Chasing around toddlers is truly exhausting. Just try to be firm and make it clear that it’s wrong for them to torment the pets. We’ll all be able to get out of the house soon.

While Mother’s Day traditions have changed since Jarvis first proposed the holiday, many people feel it’s customary to give mothers gifts on Mother’s Day, when moms take the day off from chores and relax with their families. Flowers make for popular Mother’s Day gifts, and wellwishers who want to give the special women in their lives flowers this year can consider a host of varieties.

MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS

MOMENTS IN TIME On May 3, 1469, the Italian philosopher and writer Niccolo Machiavelli is born. Machiavelli became one of the fathers of modern political theory. The term “Machiavellian” is used to describe an action undertaken for gain without regard for right or wrong. (The History Channel)

The Crafter Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Off-the-Charts Pain --DEAR DR. ROACH: Why is pain measured by numbers? I have severe pain, and doctors do not know what to do when I say it is an 11 on a scale of 1-10. My pain can’t be measured by numbers. It depends on the time of day, what I have done during the day and the weather. I have arthritis in most of my joints, specifically my spine and hips. Having had five spine surgeries, epidurals and hip shots, I have pain every day. There is not much more that can be done but to take opioids. It can be hard to make the decision either to take an opioid and go out shopping or for coffee feeling like I am in a vacuum, or to go out in pain. There is no chronic pain support group in my area, and no one can understand how I feel, even the professionals, unless they have gone through it. So when asked how I am, I say “fine.” Other people don’t want to hear about my pain. Why is there not another way the doctor can measure your pain? I have given up everything I love to do in life because of pain. There’s no way to get “better” from pain. -- M.L.D. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear your story, as it is similar to those I have heard before from people with chronic pain due to many different causes. It is disappointing for me to hear that you haven’t found a pain specialist in your area who seems to care about helping you. Although the 1-10 pain scale is thoroughly entrenched, it has its flaws. The biggest one is that what one person might consider a two, another person might consider a nine. I’ve seen people with horrifying injuries gritting their teeth and saying their pain is a 3 while other people claim their pain from what seems to be a minor condition is a 10 (I had one person tell me the pain from getting his blood pressure taken was a 10). Because pain is subjective, there is no way of standardizing what a person means with their pain rating. However, a 10 on a scale of 1-10 is supposed to be the worst pain imaginable.

A man’s work is from sun to sun, but a mother’s work is never done. ~Author Unknown

Magic Maze DOG-EARED WORDS

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My father, 90, has neuropathy in his feet and legs, and it is very painful. He recently talked to a clinic that is offering stem cell treatment to relieve the pain. The clinic says it helps 85% of those who get the treatment; however, because of HIPAA laws, they don’t provide any referrals. The treatments are very expensive ($16,000), and results are seen in six weeks to six months. Are you familiar with this treatment, and is it effective for most people? Is this something you can recommend? -- D.B. ANSWER: I also have seen advertisements for stem cell treatments for many conditions. For neuropathy in particular, there are no good studies that give an estimate of effectiveness. It may be the case that 85% of people treated at the clinic report improvement. But the risk of a placebo effect is very high with this kind of procedure, and I could not recommend stem cell treatments for neuropathy without better information about the risks, the benefits and how long those benefits might last. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Planting Trees in Recognition of Earth Day and Arbor Day You can still celebrate these events! By Marci Muller, Horticulture Team Leader with the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County

O

n Wednesday April 22, the world celebrated the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. Due to the coronavirus, this major landmark was celebrated online. The man credited with starting Earth Day was Gaylord Nelson, former Governor and Senator from Wisconsin. At that time, there were virtually no laws protecting the environment, and no Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The first Earth Day, March 22, 1970, was originally planned by Mr. Nelson to be a nationwide Environmental Teach-in to help make people aware of what was happening to the environment. Estimates of participation for the first Earth Day put the numbers at 20 million students and adults. It involved public protests across the United States in support of the need for environmental protections and awareness. From there, the movement gained support around the world year-after-year. Bipartisan congressional support followed with the passage of many legislative acts including the creation of the EPA, the Clean Air Act and the Endangered Species Act. The goal of Earth Day remains to bring attention to environmental concerns both locally and world-wide. Over the years, in addition to world-wide advocacy for the environment, many school children have brought home tree seedlings to be planted in honor of Earth Day.

spread)? Once you have that information you need to decide on which tree you’d like to plant. Next consider what you want from the tree. Are you looking for shade or a smaller tree with beautiful flowers? Do you want to attract birds? There are many reasons to plant a tree, and some trees fit into more than one category. Listed below are several suggestions of some native trees, both large and small, and some ornamental trees that do well in our area as well. There are plenty of other trees to choose from. Redbud in spring flower. This year, in the same week, we celebrated Arbor Day on Friday March 24. Arbor Day’s history stretches back to 1872 when J. Sterling Morton, a newspaper editor, suggested that Nebraskans should plant trees to remind them of their homes back east and to stabilize the soil from wind erosion. That first year 1 million trees were planted in Nebraska. Following the success of the first year, the state of Nebraska created a state holiday in 1874 with parades and tree planting by schoolchildren. By 1882, Arbor Day had become a tradition in schools across the country. Today National Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday of April, but many states use alternative dates that reflect the best tree planting time for their area. Regardless of the date, the emphasis is on planting and appreciating trees for all the good they bring to the world. Trees do incredible things for the environment and for us. First, we all know that trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and give off oxygen in exchange. In addition, trees help cool the atmosphere through transpiration and shading. Trees absorb pollutants from the air, provide habitat for some birds, food for other birds and animals and provide timber and other wood products for us. Those are just a few of the benefits we receive from trees. Even though the celebrations for Earth Day and Arbor Day 2020 have passed, there is still time to honor both. Why not plant a tree this spring, and, possibly, a tree native to upstate New York? Before doing this though, please make sure to consider both the choice and placement of the tree. The first consideration is the siting of the tree. What is the exposure (is it windy or protected), what is the soil like (is it well-drained or does it get soggy at certain times of the year, what is the pH and texture of the soil), how much room is there for the tree to grow (both height and

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The Lamb is usually excited about taking on a new challenge. But if that’s a touch of doubt you’re feeling, maybe it’s you telling yourself to go slow on this until you learn more about it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Accepting new commitments when you haven’t yet finished the batch on hand could be a bit rash. Better to ease up on the new ones until you get further along with your current lot. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Try to be more open-minded in working toward a resolution of that standoff between yourself and a colleague or family member. A little flexibility now could work to your advantage later. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Some people might be anxious about your plans. So you need to take time to explain what you expect to do and how you expect do it. And don’t forget to ask for suggestions. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Dealing with an unfamiliar problem can be difficult. The wisest course you can take is to ask for advice from those who have been where you are and have come through it. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Tackle a frustrating job problem by considering possibilities you might have ignored before. This reassures colleagues you’re serious about finding a solution, even if it’s not totally yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your balanced approach to life proves to be helpful this week when someone you care for needs your spiritual comfort, while someone else benefits from your toughlove practicality. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Once again, you’re likely to be asked to keep a secret for someone. But do you really want to do so? Be honest with yourself and with your needs before you make any such commitment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Taking a more direct approach from the more diplomatic one you’ve used before could make a difference in finally resolving a too-long-held disagreement. Try it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Being asked for advice is flattering to the Sea Goat, who has a habit of saying the right thing. This time, expect someone to be especially impressed and to act on that sentiment. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) With a number of pressures easing, your project could be making a lot more progress than you expected by this time. That’s great news. But don’t let yourself be distracted; stay with it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An interesting challenge looms that could be exactly what you’ve been looking for. Discuss this with colleagues who could have much to contribute and who might want to join with you. BORN THIS WEEK: Your heart is always open to offer loving concern for others. Currently, with all the problems that we have, it is good to know that there are good people out there willing to do good. We read or hear about scammers and other people who take advantage of others. Fortunately, they are the minority, even though it does not seem that way. This country is full of good people who are willing to step up and do whatever needs to be done to help their neighbors.

Regarding Painted Rocks. Let me vote for “Tacky”. My neighbor has them, and I get to see them daily. The public park is not the place for them. Keep them in your yard. Not everyone finds them beautiful. A rock in its natural state in a natural setting has a beauty all its own. A pink painted rock, not so much! We found them in the Facebook Marketplace and thought that one of their signs would make the perfect gift for a friend. From the moment we contacted them, they were wonderful to work with making the experience easy and enjoyable. We loved that we could order a handcrafted in the USA sign locally and have it completed in a week at a reasonable price. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Trip to Supermarket Brings New Challenges It occurred to me the other day that I haven’t been eating right. It’s been difficult to find food in my stores, and it’s been difficult to work up the courage to go out, fearing I might get too close to someone who is sick. It also occurred to me that not eating right was bad for my immune system, should I need to fight off an illness. I began going out just before my nearest store closed at night, dashing in for one or two items, using the self-checkout, and fleeing out the door with my haul. That’s assuming my two items were actually on the shelves. But now, in the nick of time, two stores have restarted pickup service, after having cancelled it for over a month. I place the pickup order online, select a time slot two days in advance, and drive there to have my groceries put in the car. It works, even if there are a lot of substitutions of items and a few items out of stock. Here’s a thought: Do you have a supplemental Medicare policy or Medicare Advantage? Does it cover meal delivery service, perhaps Meals on Wheels? Some do. Coverage might only apply at certain times (if you’ve just had surgery or have a medical condition), but a lot of rules are changing now. It wouldn’t hurt to check your policy. Common Warning Signs Of Arthritis Arthritis has name recognition, even among people who are not suffering from it. But despite that recognition, arthritis is not as well understood as one might think. According to the Arthritis Foundation, arthritis is not a single disease, but rather an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease. In fact, the term “arthritis” is so wide-ranging that it actually refers to more than 100 types of conditions. Despite that complexity, arthritis often produces four important warning signs, regardless of which type of arthritis a person may have. 1. Pain The Arthritis Foundation notes that arthritis-related pain may be constant or intermittent. One common misconception about arthritis pain is that it only occurs during or shortly after a body is at rest. However, arthritis-related pain can occur while the body is at rest and is not always triggered by an activity that incorporates a part of the body affected by arthritis. In addition, pain from arthritis can be isolated to one area of the body or affect various parts of the body. 2. Swelling Skin over the joints affected by arthritis may become red and swollen. This skin also may feel warm to the touch. The Arthritis Foundation advises anyone who experiences this swelling for three days or longer or more than three times per month to contact a physician. 3. Stiffness This warning sign is, along with pain, the one that is most often associated with arthritis, even by people who don’t suffer from the condition. Stiffness when waking up in the morning or after long periods of being sedentary, such as sitting at a desk during the workday or taking a long car ride, can be symptomatic of arthritis, especially if the stiffness lasts an hour or longer. 4. Difficulty Moving A Joint The Arthritis Foundation notes that people should not experience difficulty moving, such as when getting out of bed. People who experience such difficulty may have arthritis. People who recognize any of these warning signs should report them to their physicians immediately. Be as specific as possible when describing these symptoms, as specificity can help physicians design the most effective course of treatment.

SAVE TIME WITH EASY MEAL HACKS Look for recipes with as few ingredients as possible. Dishes that include longer ingredient lists typically require more legwork in the kitchen, which usually involves additional prep steps and sometimes longer cook times. Plus, you’re more likely to already have the necessities on-hand for recipes that call for 5-10 ingredients rather than lengthy lists.

Buy pre-cut vegetables to trim time spent on prep work. One of the processes that can surprisingly consume more time than you realize is cutting, chopping and dicing veggies prior to even really diving into a recipe’s instructions. If you’d still prefer prepping your own fresh produce, try completing your work the night before when it doesn’t interfere with quality time spent with family.
