Are Therapy Dogs Tax Deductible?
HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I spend quite a bit of money each year on my two Corgis: veterinary care, grooming, toys and a pet sitter. They’re also registered as therapy pets -- so they earn their keep! With all that I spend, why can’t I write off pet care on my taxes? -Harold in Palo Alto, California DEAR HAROLD: I hear you! Americans spent almost $96 billion on their pets in 2019, over $5 billion more than they did in 2018. But almost none of that can be deducted from federal taxes. Here’s what you can’t deduct: medical expenses, training or maintenance (like grooming and pet sitters). Companion or comfort animals and many therapy pets aren’t eligible for tax deductions. Here are the few deductions that are possible: * If you have a service animal -- one that is trained to assist those with specific medical conditions, such as a guide dog for the blind or a service dog that assists those with mobility or neurological issues -- the costs of buying, training and maintaining that service animal may be deductible. * If an animal is employed at your business -- such as a guard dog or the star of your Instagram empire -- you may be able to take a deduction on your business taxes. But be prepared to explain how the pet is essential to your business. * If you donate money or goods to a registered nonprofit animal shelter or animal advocacy group, this counts as a charitable deduction. Make sure to get a receipt. * Finally, you can set up a trust fund to care for your pets should they outlive you. Talk to an estate attorney about this option and any potential tax benefits. Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On May 27, 1939, a ship carrying 937 Jewish refugees is turned away from Cuba. The ship sailed close to Florida, hoping to disembark there, but a State Department telegram stated that the asylum-seekers must first “await their turns on the waiting list and qualify for and obtain immigration visas.” After appeals to Canada also were denied, the ship was forced to sail back to Europe.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
Your Hearing is
By Keith Roach, M.D.
He Can’t Find Relief for Itchy Ear Canal ---
ESSENTIAL
DEAR DR. ROACH: I just turned 68. For the past couple of months, my ear canals have been very itchy. Also, my wife was constantly cleaning earwax out of my ears. Now for some reason I no longer produce earwax, but my ears itch a lot. Do you have any idea what may be causing this? How do I stop the itching? I have tried olive oil. It seems to work but not really that well. A doctor looked in my ear and said the ear canals look fine. -- R.K. ANSWER: Itching in the ear canals is common, but usually an exam is able to lead the examiner to at least suspect a diagnosis. An incipient ear infection is one common reason, but your issue has been going on for months. Skin conditions that itch, such as eczema, is another common one. The doctor might have seen this, but sometimes the findings are subtle. Just having dry skin is a common cause, especially in winter, and olive oil is one treatment, but if it isn’t working it’s time to stop. I often see people make their problem worse by using inappropriate therapies, especially peroxide, and also by putting objects in the ear to scratch it. This can lead to abrasions, lacerations and worse that I won’t horrify you with. I would get the ear looked at again, and if there still is nothing to see, one treatment is a mild prescription steroid drop for a period of time. Your regular doctor or an ear/nose/throat specialist would be a good choice. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Are net carbs really a thing? I understand low impact on blood sugar, but not measuring net carbs. -- H.C. ANSWER: The “net carbs” number is normally calculated by taking the grams of total carbohydrates and subtracting the grams of fiber and sugar alcohols. It’s an attempt to look at the effect on blood sugar, and it has modest informational benefit. It can be misleading, because some sugar alcohols (ending in “-ol,” like maltitol and xylitol) do increase blood sugar somewhat, though not as much as sugars (which end in “-ose,” like glucose and sucrose). I don’t recommend using the term “net carbs.” I think it’s more important to look at ingredients. Avoid large amounts of added sugar and processed starches. Make sure the carbohydrates you take in come mostly from vegetables, fruits, legumes and whole grains. These are the foundations of a healthy diet, and you don’t need to count numbers. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently was diagnosed with kidney disease and was advised to drink eight glasses of water daily. I can only get down three glasses. Is it OK to drink tea instead? Would vitamins help? -- E.K. ANSWER: From the standpoint of your kidneys, tea and coffee count as water. Having adequate fluid intake is important for your kidneys, but most people who aren’t exercising or living in hot or dry environments don’t need eight full glasses a day. Vitamins are not necessary for kidney health; however, people with very advanced kidney disease often need a special form of vitamin D called calcitriol. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. PLANT A TREE FOR SUCCESSFUL GROWTH Visit a garden center or nursery and select a tree that will be hardy in your planting zone. Choosing native trees can increases the likelihood that the new tree will adapt to its surroundings. Also, inspect trees to determine if they’re healthy before taking them home. Look for evidence of root girdling, which occurs when the roots circle around the perimeter of the container and surround the trunk. Trees should not have any dead or dormant branches. The DIY Network suggests locating the tree where it can thrive. This means selecting a spot that can make it easier for the tree to grow tall and wide. Avoid planting near the house, where roots can crack concrete or asphalt, and always plant away from underground pipes.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might not like some people’s idea of a surprise. But you could be in for a pleasant shock when someone finally sends a reply to a request you made so long ago that you almost forgot about it. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a time to expect the unexpected. So don’t be surprised if a decision that just recently seemed final suddenly opens up and leaves you with another chance to make an important choice. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking a different tack on a work project might rankle some colleagues. But the positive results of your innovative course soon speak for themselves. Celebrate by doing something fun this weekend. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Meeting new associates can be awkward, even if you’re in a high positive phase right now. Best advice: Make them feel comfortable, and you’ll soon forget your own discomfort. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s a good time for you social Lions to blow-dry your manes, polish your claws and look like the Fabulous Felines you are as you make new friends and influence the influential. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Expectations run especially high this week, and you should feel confident in your abilities to take advantage of what might be offered. A colleague has some advice you might find helpful. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A recent flurry of activity leaves you in need of a little breathing space, and you’d be wise to take it. Close family members should have an explanation about an emergency situation that just passed. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An insensitive act makes a difficult situation more so. But try not to waste either your physical or emotional energies in anger. Move on and let others fill the clod in on the facts of life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) It’s a good time to look into that training program or college course you’ve been considering. You might have a good place to use those sharpened skills sooner rather than later. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Education dominates much of your aspect during this week. You might want to start checking out those summer session courses that could help advance your career plans. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Progress often comes in fits and starts. But at least you’re moving straight ahead with no backsliding. You should soon be able to pick up the pace and reach your goals in due time. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Be wary of a deal that gives confusing answers to your questions. Remember: It’s always risky swimming in unknown waters, so you need all the help you can get to stay on course. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of bringing people together and creating close friendships wherever you go. © 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

PEST CONTROL
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “I found a small waste basket that fits right between the wall and my dryer. There’s a gap that’s about 8 inches wide. The lip of the basket keeps it from sliding down to the floor, so it’s easy to clean out the lint trap and put the waste in the basket. Also, I used a strip of hook-and-loop tape to attach a tissue holder box vertically to the wall. I stick a box of fabric softener sheets in it, and they, too, are right where I need them.” -- T.K. in Nevada * “To keep the kitchen garbage can from smelling, I put spoiled food items in a bread bag, and then put it in the freezer until it’s time for the garbage collector. I also have a friend with a compost bin, and I am doing the same with vegetables, fruit and peelings. I plan to bring the whole mess when I get to visit. The compost bin won’t care if it’s been defrosted!” -- E.L. in Virginia * “Place recipes inside of a plastic bag so that they can be handled while cooking, but not dirtied. This is especially necessary with heirloom recipes. For myself, I have made photocopies of recipes handed down from my grandmother, so the originals are safe in the cookbook. I like handwritten recipe cards because it’s like the writer is there with you.” -- T. in Ohio * Clogged drain? Don’t use chemicals. “If you do encounter a full clog, try hot water and baking soda first. If that doesn’t work, try a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Avoid plumbing snakes, which can scratch the interior of your pipes, and commercial chemical cleaners, which are caustic and a health hazard, even when used according to instructions.” -- Colepepper Plumbing in California

Hiring a landscape architect may be a smart move for homeowners who are planning major overhauls of their properties. “The Operational Outlook Handbook” defines a landscape architect as “a person who designs parks, outdoor spaces of campuses, recreational facilities, private homes, and other open areas.” Landscape architects typically must be licensed and many hold degrees in landscape architecture from accredited schools. Architects who work on residential spaces often work with homeowners to design gardens, plantings, stormwater management, and pools. Landscape architects design spaces to do more than merely look good. Designs also are about functionality and meeting the needs of the homeowner. Outdoor spaces are designed after considering what the homeowner wants to experience and how homeowners want to use a given space. Landscape architects often do not plant and maintain these spaces. Rather, architects collaborate with other landscaping professionals to produce the final results.

Now’s a Great time to Do Some Pruning – But Let’s Do It Properly! By Marci Muller, Horticulture Team Leader with the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County
A
s we all look for activities to do outside, right now is a great time to prune some plants, but the wrong time to prune others. Of course, there are proper ways to prune, with good reason. So let’s start with the basics. Pruning for Plant Health: Right now it is easy to see all of the twigs and branches on your woody shrubs and trees. Pruning out any dead twigs and branches can and should be done now. In addition, if you see any twigs or branches that are rubbing against another, one of these should be removed. Deciding where to make your cut is the first decision you need to make. • Rule #1: Stand back and look at your tree or shrub and its shape to determine where you should begin. Step back often to review the form. • Rule #2: Always make your cut at a node. A node is where a bud is attached to a twig (you would cut just above the bud at a slight angle), where a twig attaches to a branch and where a branch attaches to a larger branch or the main stem. In the latter two locations, you will see a small swelling at the point of attachment. This is called the branch collar. You want to make your cut just above the collar. In most cases, it is best to remove the entire twig (cut at the base) rather than making the cut half way down. • Rule #3: Use your hand pruners for any twigs or small branches (1/2 in. diameter or less), use a pair of loppers for branches (1 in. diameter). Anything larger should be cut with a pruning saw. • Rule #4 Make sure the blade on your pruners and loppers are sharp. We recommend using bypass pruners always, but anvil style pruners may be used on dead twigs and branches. Pruning for Shaping: • Rule #1: Stand back and look at your tree or shrub and it’s shape to determine where you should begin. Step back often to review the form. • Rule #2: Understand your plant. Inside your shrub or tree is the plant’s DNA which tells it how tall, how wide and what sort of shape it will have at maturity. If you are trying to prune the plant into a size or shape that goes against this DNA, the plant will fight back aggressively. A Dwarf Burning Bush that wants to mature at 8’ tall and 6-8’ wide is going to resist your attempt to keep it 3’ tall and 4’ wide. If you have a plant that is or will be too large for the space where it is growing, perhaps Always use the proper tool the better choice would for the job based on the size be to move that plant to of the twig or branch! another location and plant a new one that won’t outgrow the site. • Rule #3: We want to prune to allow light and air to get into the middle of the plant. Removing some of the twigs and branches from the center can achieve this while not interfering with the plant’s natural shape. Once that has been achieved, you can then decide if more needs to be removed to maintain the shape. • Rule #4: Shearing plants encourages a rapid response from the plant to replace the lost food-producing leaves. While some plants are able to withstand regular shearing (Yews and

Pruning cuts should be made at a node!
Boxwood come to mind), shearing generally results in the development of foliage clustered at the tips of the plants and die back. Refer to the instructions in the section above and you will be richly rewarded with strong healthy plants that have foliage from top to bottom. Pruning for Increased Flowering and Fruit: • Rule #1: Timing is everything. Plants that flower in the spring should be pruned shortly after they flower. So your Lilac should not be pruned until the flowers are spent and for about a month or so after. Plants that flower in the summer and later can be pruned now as they flower on new growth. This would include your Roses, Butterflybushes and Potentillas. Renewal Pruning: If you have an old, over-grown plant such as a Lilac, Rose-ofSharon or Viburnum, you can regenerate a new plant over a period of 3 years. Each year cut 1/3 of the plant almost to the ground. By the end of the third year, you will have a new, healthy plant that you can enjoy. Cornell Cooperative Extension of Monroe County has the Gardener’s Helpline, staffed by Master Gardeners. They are available to answer any questions you might have. The Helpline can be reached at 585-753-2555 or monroemg@cornell.edu. CCE Monroe also has a Diagnostic Clinic for processing soil samples and for pest diagnosis – insects, diseases and weeds. The Clinic can be reached at 585-753-2553 or eab11@cornell.edu. Please visit our website monroe.cce.cornell.edu for more information. As we all learn to function under COVID 19 regulations, CCEMonroe encourages you to get outside and consider growing something new this year. It’s a perfect salve for anxious times. Stay healthy! SENIOR NEWS LINE
6 ways to prevent falls around the house
By Matilda Charles
Getting Around Canceled Events Life might be slowly getting back to normal, but a number of things we anticipated won’t be happening now. The expired prescription-drug drop off: Once a year in my area, the drug store turns its parking lot over to an organization that collects and destroys old drugs. Not this year; it’s already been canceled. A thought: Some local police departments have a collection bin in their facility, usually in the lobby. Call to inquire if your police department has one, or if they’re planning a drug event of their own. The shredding events: Twice a year the bank and the senior center hire a company to bring in their shredding truck and accept all paper items to be shredded: old tax records, bills, documents with personal information on them. This is a very valuable service, and unfortunately, around here those have been canceled. One way to get around this is to have your own shredder. They can be ordered online, typically for less than $40. Learn the difference between strip cut, cross cut and confetti cut. Pictures can be deceptive, so read the specs for the machine. Some will only shred small receipts. Plays and dinners: Once you hear that an event you’d paid for is being canceled, start right away to get your money back. The group might ask that you let them keep your money for their expenses, saying you can claim it as a donation on your taxes. You might consider it, but don’t assume you can get a credit for the same event next year. Better to get your money in hand now. There are so many other events -- senior games and fitness clinics, summer banquet and dance, the legal help event, monthly tech help -- all likely canceled for the foreseeable future. Tip: Call the organization anyway. They might have found a way to safely hold their events.

Despite all of the potential hazards around a house - from electrical issues to fire hazards to carbon monoxide - the National Home Security Alliance says that falls are the leading cause of death due to home accidents. Falls are responsible for one-third of all home-related fatalities. Although seniors are the group most affected by falls, these types of accidents can affect anyone. A broken bone may be a minor inconvenience for young people, but fractures are more serious for the elderly. As a result, seniors must take measures to protect themselves against falls. These steps can minimize risk at home. 1. Remove tripping hazards. Examine rooms and hallways for potential hazards, such as slippery throw rugs, floorboards that stick up, loose carpeting, or furniture that blocks walking paths. Remedy these hazards as soon as possible. Address loose floorboards and/or place nonslip materials beneath rugs. 2. Install grab bars or railings. Install grab bars in certain locations for extra stability or where someone may need leverage getting up from a seated position. They are particularly helpful near toilets and bathtubs and in stairways and hallways. 3. Stick to sensible shoes. Sensible shoes fit properly and have sturdy, nonskid soles. Avoid walking around in slippers or even in stocking feet, which are much more slippery. 4. Store items within reach. Store items that are used frequently, such as dishes, in easily accessible cabinets and other locations. This prevents having to climb or reach for them. 5. Install more lighting. Poor visibility can contribute to falls. Lighting in hallways, stairways, bathrooms, and bedrooms - even if it is a small night light - can be enough to light the way. 6. Reinforce your home’s exterior. Falls do not only occur inside. Inspect the perimeter of a property for uneven turf, holes or cracked or uneven patches of walkways. Make sure lighting is working at entryways, and check that exterior handrails are secure. Falls can cause serious injury or death, particularly for aging men and women. Simple fixes around the house can make things more secure and reduce the risk for falls. TF206001

Breakfast Pizza Put a healthy twist on pizza for a quick, satisfying breakfast kids and adults will love. Start with sliced naan or a whole wheat bagel. Toast to warm and add a smear of ricotta cheese. Then top with sliced tomatoes and sprinkle with a dash of fleur de sel and dried basil, if desired. If you prefer a sweeter pizza, skip the tomatoes and use sliced fruit instead. This tasty breakfast will fight hunger pangs straight until lunchtime.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winbourne A swarm of 20,000 bees followed a car for two days because their queen was inside the vehicle. The insects were removed by a beekeeper after the car was parked, but were back the next day, as the queen was still inside.
Enjoyable Escape • Buy the right bikes. Take time to research different brands of bicycles and what they offer. Some bikes are ideal for streets or paved trails, while others are better for rustic roads and trails. A qualified bike retailer can help shoppers find the right bike for them and their families, ensuring everyone in the family is riding the right size bike and the one commensurate with their skill level. • Limit the distance. Children won’t be able to put in as many miles as their parents or older

Going for a bike ride is one of the best ways for people to exercise in fresh air. Cycling is not only earth-conscious and convenient, but it also is a fun & popular activity that families can enjoy.
siblings. Limit cycling excursions to a reasonable amount of time so youngsters’ health is not compromised. • Focus on fun. Consider what kids will get out of the trip and gear the afternoon around that. Choose a path that circles a scenic lake or leads to an ice cream stand. Make your cycling excursion more of an afternoon out than a marathon biking session. • Take frequent breaks. Little legs may not be able to keep up, and adults will need to
anticipate stopping along the way. • Know the terrain. Stick to routes you have ridden before. Leave the more intense courses that include extreme climbs and dips for those times when kids are not in tow. Stick to lightly trafficked routes, or travel during off-peak hours. Consult with trail guides and read reviews as well. Cycling as a family can be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon & get some exercise.

I was at the Batavia Post Office the week of Easter.
Shout-out to the two people that were picking up trash in Centennial Park today. So thoughtful! Thanks for making our city a more beautiful place.
Shout out to all the towns for distributing free face masks on May 9th. It did me proud seeing our Rotary, Town Supervisor and volunteers distributing the masks. Made me proud to be a Penfield Resident!
How low can someone go by stealing a bronze veteran flag holder from my father’s grave at a local cemetery? He was a WWII Veteran! I went out today for groceries, and I saw one person who did not wear a mask, and I wanted to say something but refrained from doing so. Don’t people understand English? She went outside, and what appeared to be her boyfriend, along with two young children were also outside. The guy wore no mask; neither did one of the children. One child did have a mask on. It’s obvious that some people just GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

I had two boxes to mail out. The post office clerk said one package was going to cost me $28 to mail. I told the clerk I cannot afford it. Out from the line of people waiting, a beautiful young girl said, “I will pay for that.” I am 78 years old and so surprised that a stranger would do this for me. The clerk rechecked the package weight, and it only came to $10 plus change. So, this girl, who worked at Wendy’s a few doors down, paid for my package. Thank you, young lady. You made my day! Thanks for your kindness to an old lady.
Thank you so much to the two ladies in the red car who brought coffee to the school bus in Clarkson the morning of 5/11. That was so kind! Many
of us volunteer to give out meals to the Brockport families, and this day was especially cold and rainy. The coffee warmed us right up and put a smile on our face. Thank you for your act of kindness during this difficult time!
How refreshing to hear that someone has the same sentiments as I do. I enjoyed the post entitled, “Rippled Affect.” Poison is a terrible way to kill a rodent, or anything else for that matter. And yes, it does have a rippling affect. Do not get me wrong; I do not like mice, but when one makes it into my house, we trap them alive and then release them. I have also used natural remedies as well. Mint is something mice do not like. It was a pleasure reading a decent post, by someone who seems very knowledgeable as well, unlike some who post horrible things

The entire staff at the Legacy at Erie Station Road have gone above and beyond in keeping all of us safe. They are taking excellent precautions during the pandemic to keep everyone safe both physically and mentally. Communication with the staff has been excellent, especially the weekly email from the director. I am very pleased to be a resident in the Villas and am thankful for the great job everyone has been doing during this difficult time. Thank you to you all, and I look forward when this is over being able to go to the wonderful activities that we all are missing. Great job!

I went walking on Saturday, May 2, 2020 around noon. There were many people on bikes and walking or running. It was a beautiful day. Many of those people were not wearing masks. I know that every person is required to wear a mask now. Please be considerate of your fellow humans and wear your masks. I would like to comment on the person who wrote in about the nosy, old lady parking lot police. I think every place has one or two. I don’t know what they get over trying to make others as miserable as they are. They should just try to mind their own business and get along with people. I think they would be much happier women.

Thomas Landscape & Design, Inc. 775 Ridge Rd., Webster • 585-671-8476 STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winbourne During World War II, Coca-Cola wanted soldiers to have a taste of home and opened bottling plants near Europe. However, the soda was synonymous with the States, making it problematic for non-Americans to be seen drinking it, especially in the Soviet Union where it was viewed as a symbol of American imperialism. Soviet Gen. Marshal Georgy Zhukov, a fan who didn’t want to be seen consuming it himself, appealed to the company to make a clear version. A chemist at the Austrian bottling plant obliged by removing the drink’s coloring, after which “White Coke” was bottled in clear glass with a white cap and red star.

NOW’S THE TIME TO
TEACH AT-HOME NUTRITION With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features) HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious. PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime. SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it.
