NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson Here’s a great way to make waterproof matches for camping. Light a candle or use a wax melt in a warmer. When the wax is good and melted, get a box of matches ready (preferably strike-anywhere matches, but strike on box works, too). Dip each match head into the melted wax and set aside on a piece of parchment until dry and hardened.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson “If you have to put a lid over something that is likely to stick to it, try giving the inside of the lid a very light coating of vegetable oil. I do this when I am transporting dip to a potluck. Vegetable oil has no flavor, really, and it’s just enough to let the lid come off without taking the top layer with it.” -- J.A. in Florida GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GARDENING IN AUTUMN Autumn is gardening season. That statement may not seem right to those who think of the spring as the peak time to care for lawns and gardens. However, autumn is an ideal time to get into the garden and ensure that flowers, trees and garden beds will over-winter successfully.
It’s that time of year!
Stink Bugs & Cluster Flies TREATMENT: $199* Nests: • Hanging • Wall • Ground
A number of things make autumn a prime gardening season. The cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat. In addition, soil harbors a lot of residual warmth in autumn. Also, the colder temperatures haven’t yet arrived in autumn, nor have the leaves completely fallen, making fall a prime time to assess what’s already in the landscape, what needs pruning back and where to address planting for next year.

Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees.

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates.
Vice President .....................Kimberly Dougherty Controller ..........................Kathy Hammond
The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states.
Advertising Sales Manager .............................Manuel Karam Creative Director .................................Cristie Leone
“Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.”
Production Supervisor .....................................Jeff Wasson Circulation Manager .................................Shari Rapone
The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing.

Magic Maze GOT WORDS?
HOW STUDENTS CAN HANDLE THE TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL A child’s school-aged years are filled with many different lessons and experiences. While in school, kids have the opportunity to broaden their horizons and meet new people. Many students will attend various schools before moving on to college, and therefore they must learn how to adjust to new schools. While many students attend elementary school together for years, students may not know their classmates once they make it to middle school, which tends to boast larger student bodies than elementary schools. That’s because many middle schools’ student bodies are a combination of several elementary schools. Making the transition from elementary school to middle school or junior high can spark anxiety in students, but that does not have to be. The National Education Association says a common element of a successful middle school experience is a smooth and positive transition from elementary school.

Caring for Families One Soldier at a Time By Amanda Dudek
S
eptember has just begun, and One Soldier at a Time (OSAAT) founder Lauren Coe is already in the midst of preparing for OSAAT’s annual 12 Days of Christmas event. “We have eight of the twelve gifts we need already,” said Coe. OSAAT is a nonprofit project which primarily serves the military mothers and fathers, wives and husbands who remain at home while their loved ones serve overseas. “Military moms and wives, our primary focus, will forever take care of their children, but who is taking care of them?” asked Coe. OSAAT “adopts” these military moms and wives. “For each of them, we create a beautiful basket with a handmade card, an ornament, a chocolate bar and 12 individually wrapped gifts which are labeled with numbers 1-12,” explained Coe. “Each gift carries a message from their loved one. On Day 1, the message reads, ‘I want you to know how special you are to me.’ By the time they unwrap the gift for Day 12, they read, ‘I want you to know how much I love you today and always.” The gifts provide much-needed encouragement. “The stress felt in the military community is high,” noted Coe. “If we can give women a sense that they belong, they matter, they are not alone, that is so important. We encourage them to open one gift each day, to think about a special time with their loved one, to imagine the embrace and feel the closeness.’” For Lauren Coe, whose son is in the Navy, this cause is close to her heart. “A very dear friend of mine had a son in the Marines,” she shared. “He did come home... just not the way she had hoped. They started an education fund for his 5 year-old daughter, Molly. When I donated, my friend was so moved.” Another friend of Coe’s also had a son deployed overseas who did return safe and sound; however, while he was overseas, his mother struggled. “She felt helpless,” Coe explained. “When you feel helpless, you begin to feel overwhelmed. Then my friend had this amazing epiphany.”

Coe’s friend had done 12 Days of Christmas for her son’s fiancée, and she thought about all of the other military wives and moms of those serving overseas who might benefit from something like this. So, she started a project called “Full Circle Home,” adopting moms and wives all over the United States. “I remember thinking there was no way I could ever do what she does,” said Coe. “Then, I felt God say, ‘Just do you.’ So, in 2006, we started by supporting 22 moms and wives on Valentine’s Day.” OSAAT also began sending sun care items to those serving overseas. “We sent 250 sun care packages that July,” said Coe. “Each one supports three people, so we reached 750 servicemen and women.”

Thirteen years later, OSAAT has supported thousands of military personnel, military moms, wives and families. “We send over at least 200 sun care packages every year,” Coe said. “We also support at least 100 wives and moms every Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. These family members are the hidden heroes of this war because their sons, daughters, husbands and wives chose to serve, and their families are Lauren Coe presented with this plaque from in this by default.” the USAF for her work with OSAAT! OSAAT now supports seven local PTSD homes as well, donating hygiene packages and providing what they can – cookware, bedding and furniture – when residents are ready to move out. Recently, OSAAT has been directing others to these homes, encouraging them to drop items off themselves. “They actually see the impact they are making, and it gives them a greater sense of being an American,” stated Coe. “OSAAT is transforming into a bridge between the community and these homes.” Coe noted that great need still remains. “We adopt moms and wives the moment their loved one goes into boot camp,” explained Coe. “When they complete boot camp, we stop until their loved one goes overseas; then we readopt. Right now, we are only able to adopt about 100 hidden heroes.” “Every dollar makes a difference,” Coe insisted, adding that being a Mary Kay director helps. She recalled a little girl who offered everything she had at an OSAAT event: $1. “I knelt down in front of her, and I said, ‘Your dollar is going to make a huge difference. Thank you so much.’” Little did she know a local businesswoman would hear her interview on WARM 101.3 FM and would be so moved she then donated $5,000 to OSAAT. “Don’t despise small beginnings,” said Coe. “Your support makes more of a difference than you can possibly imagine.” For more information, contact OSAAT at onesoldieratatimeusa@ gmail.com or visit www.onesoldieratatime.net. TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons.
4.
Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said. Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively. Learn More: For more information, go to www.vendini.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Heart Attack Symptoms Not Always Painful
Affordable Dental Implant

Solve Your Dental Problem Schedule A Free Consultation
DEAR DR. ROACH: My very healthy husband collapsed and died on the way to the hospital. They worked on him for a long time but could not revive him. They didn’t do an autopsy, and they declared his death as “atherosclerotic vascular disease.” He was 79 years old and had no health problems. He came into the house and said that something was in his throat and he couldn’t swallow. He tried to cough it up, but nothing came up. He then collapsed. He had no pain. I am still puzzled by that symptom of a heart attack. Have you ever heard of that? I am really curious and still in shock. I hope you can explain. -- T.S. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear about your husband. I think he likely did have a heart attack, which is the leading cause of death in the industrialized world. Although many people have symptoms of heart disease that they ignore, some people have no symptoms until sudden death. Atherosclerosis, hardening of the arteries due to cholesterol plaque and calcium in the blood vessels of the heart, almost always is present in people with a heart attack. The initial symptom of a heart attack varies widely. Throat discomfort is not rare. Cough is a common symptom, as the heart becomes damaged and the pressure in the lungs increases. The classic symptom of chest pain certainly does happen, but there are many variations. Both men and women can have atypical presentations. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has Parkinson’s disease. He also has a stent in his heart. We have been to many doctors to address a breathing problem: fast breathing. He experiences this daily, and we are told that it is anxiety. It is difficult to watch him go through this. It sometimes happens before he is due for his Sinemet, but other times right after taking it. He has been prescribed Xanax, clonidine, cannabidiol-infused gummies and a few others. One doctor says it is from Parkinson’s, but the rest say it is anxiety. -- E.W. ANSWER: Shortness of breath can have many causes, but someone with Parkinson’s disease has an unusual possibility, called “respiratory dyskinesia” (which just means “abnormal movement of the muscles of breathing”). This is an involuntary rapid breathing that causes distress, and it usually happens an hour after taking a medication like Sinemet. Changing the dose can help with diagnosis, and working with a neurologist to adjust the dose of the Sinemet (which comes in fast-acting and slowrelease formulations) can solve the problem. I would start with an expert on Parkinson’s. Keeping a diary of when he takes his medication and when the breathing trouble starts and stops will be helpful, as would a video of what it looks like when happening. Having Parkinson’s doesn’t make someone less likely to have other causes of shortness of breath, and anyone with a stent in the heart (meaning a history of blockages of at least one heart artery) is at risk of developing further blockages. Poor blood flow to the heart is another potential cause. Get the Parkinson’s evaluation first. I would not recommend anti-anxiety medications unless there is clear evidence of benefit. Ascribing a physical symptom like shortness of breath to anxiety without a thorough workup is unwise.

In September 2016, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration banned the use of these antibacterial agents. These chemicals can disrupt hormone cycles and cause muscle weakness. “There’s no data demonstrating that over-the-counter antibacterial soaps are better at preventing illness than washing with plain soap and water,” the FDA said in a press release issued shortly after the rule was announced.

A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An offer to help with a stalled project should reassure you that you have a workable plan in spite of the problems in getting it up and running. The week’s end brings more positive news. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A past problem about a workplace situation re-emerges early in the week. Talking things out helps ease tensions by midweek, but some hurt feelings could linger a few more days. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Optimistic aspects dominate your efforts. However, expect to confront some criticism, some of which might be valid, so keep an open mind. But overall, it’s your views that will count. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Social interaction with new people, especially on the job, could be a bit strained in the early part of the week. But the awkwardness passes as you get to know each other better. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Expect news about a follow-up to a workplace change that could make a difference in your career path. Meanwhile, new friends widen the circle for all you Social Lions who love to party. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Enjoy your well-earned plaudits for a job well done. But be aware that some people might not share your colleagues’ admiration, and you might have to work harder to win them over. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It’s a good week to recheck your probably already overlong “to do” list and decide what to keep and what to discard. Lose the clutter and focus your energy on what’s really important. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to take a new perspective on what you’ve been offered. Expanding your view could help to uncover any plusses or minuses that weren’t apparent at first. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Applying the usual methods to this week’s unique challenges might not work too well. Instead, use your creativity to find a way to resolve any impasse that develops. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) So what if fate throws some obstacles in your path this week? Just keep in mind that the sure-footed and resolute Goat can get past any barrier by focusing on the goals up ahead. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This week calls for better communication with people in both your private life and the workplace. Start by asking questions, and then pay close attention to the answers. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Potentially beneficial workplace changes could be closer than you realize. Make sure you know what’s going on so that you’re not left high and dry when the good things happen. BORN THIS WEEK: You’re not timid about pushing to have your aims realized once you’ve set your mind to accomplishing your goals. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Sept. 25, 1970, ABC premieres “The Partridge Family,” which would become a smash hit. The group’s songs were not actually recorded by the five siblings and their mom in a garage, but were mostly the work professional musicians in Los Angeles.
Questions older drivers can ask themselves to see if it’s still safe to drive Men and women know that adjustments must be made as they get older. Athletes nearing their golden years may not be able to push themselves as hard at the gym as they once did. Professionals nearing retirement age might not be able to pull long hours at the office like they used to. But aging affects more than just work and play. As men and women age, their ability to perform everyday tasks, including driving, may diminish as well. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that, as people age, certain changes they experience can affect their ability to safely operate an automobile. Changes in eyesight, physical fitness and reflexes may require aging drivers to reassess their skills behind the wheel. The NHTSA notes that drivers can ask themselves the following questions as they try to assess their driving abilities. How is my eyesight? The American Optometric Association notes that vision changes naturally occur as a person ages. Such changes do not necessarily mean drivers have to give up the keys to their vehicles. In fact, they may just require more routine eye examinations. The NHTSA says having trouble reading signs easily, recognizing someone from across the street, seeing streets signs and pedestrians, and handling headlight glare are common signs of age-related eye problems. Can I control my vehicle? Age-related loss of strength, coordination and flexibility can make it hard for aging men and women to control their vehicles. Some signs that drivers might be having trouble controlling their vehicles include trouble looking over shoulders to change lanes, difficulty moving foot from the gas pedal to the brake pedal and difficulty turning the steering wheel. Pain in the knees, legs or ankles also can make it difficult for drivers to control their vehicles. Does driving make me nervous, scared or overwhelmed? Drivers who feel confused by traffic signs and traffic (including pedestrian traffic) should stop driving until they can discuss the issue with their physicians. Medication can sometimes make drivers feel sleepy or confused, and some aging drivers even find themselves overwhelmed in otherwise normal driving situations. Are my loved ones concerned about my driving? Aging drivers may feel offended when family members question their ability to drive. However, the NHTSA notes that sometimes other people notice things about a person’s driving that the person does not. The concern expressed by loved ones should not be taken lightly. Do I drive with passengers? Drivers who routinely drive with passengers, especially young children, carry extra responsibility. As a result, such drivers owe it to themselves and their passengers to honestly assess their driving abilities. Various remedies can address age-related driving issues, and drivers should discuss them with their doctors the moment they feel as though their skills behind the wheel are starting to diminish. * On Sept. 26, 1957, “West Side Story,” composed by Leonard Bernstein, opens on Broadway. The show went on to an impressive maiden run of 732 performances. In 1961, a film version was an enormous hit and took home 10 Academy Awards. * On Sept. 28, 1066, claiming his right to the English throne, William, duke of Normandy, invades England. Mr. & Mrs. Jared Collins and children. Thank you so much for your generosity and paying for our meal at the Olive Garden a few weeks ago. Your kind words and prayers for our brother William Coffey will never be forgotten. Patty, Julie & Joanne
On Wednesday afternoon, August 21, I dropped a portfolio of legal papers in Routes 5 & 20 between Parrish St Ext and Route 21 in Canandaigua. By the time I realized what happened, papers were strewn about on both shoulders of this busy highway. While picking up papers from one side of the road, I noticed a woman had stopped on the opposite side to get the papers which had blown there. In my state of panic, I didn’t think to ask for her name, but she definitely saved the day for me and restored my faith in the kindness of others.
Our six-month-old great granddaughter’s bunny rabbit was inadvertently left at Egypt Park a couple of weeks ago. When Great Grandpa returned later that night, the bunny rabbit was sitting and waiting on one of the picnic tables. Thank you to whoever rescued him. You saved the day (and night). Thank you, thank you!
Many thanks to the kind person who took my lost handicap parking card to the Brighton Town Hall. God Bless. M.G.
The [local transportation] service has gotten so bad this summer that I must call them first to ask if a bus is running that day. The excuse is always the same: “not enough drivers.” This is clearly a management problem, and in all my working life, any business manager who used this excuse over an extended period of time would be looking for another job.

I was at Exit 9 Dunkin Donuts drive thru on September 5th in the morning. When I got to the window, they said the person in front of me paid for me. That was a Livingston County Sheriff. Then I was there on September the 9th, the same thing happened. This time, it was someone from a local trucking company: Mat Trucking. Thank you to both! I mistakenly left $120.00 at the ESL drive up ATM in Brockport. The next person in line took the money in the bank and then deposited it into my account. Thank you, ATM Angel!

Bicyclists in [local town] seem to think stop signs and red lights don’t apply to them. They ride in the middle of the street, against traffic in the oncoming lane, and swerve back and forth or side to side. This makes it difficult for car drivers at an intersection to see you if you’re riding in the wrong lane or if switching puts you at an angle in my A-pillar blind spot. Stop being foolish. It is dangerous.

Let kids handle more standard responsibilities. Adults tend to take more mundane responsibilities like making doctor’s appointments or grocery shopping for granted. But kids likely have no idea how to handle such tasks. Parents can encourage their high school seniors to make their own medical appointments. In addition, take kids along on grocery shopping trips, explaining how to find sale items and which foods to buy and which to avoid. Nutrition is not always foremost on the minds of college freshmen, but those who understand the importance of healthy diets are more likely to buy nutritious meals than junk food.

Rather than focusing on job responsibilities at each job you held, gear the résumé around what you achieved in each position. This will help identify how you performed in the position, instead of just a general retelling of what you did. It can be challenging to achieve this for jobs that don’t naturally lend themselves to numerically quantitative results (i.e., increased department sales by 15 percent), but it’s still possible to use a résumé to illustrate your achievements. Rather than state that you were responsible for providing customer service, explain that you built your reputation on conveying difficult technical terms to the layperson, serving as the go-to employee for translating job jargon for outside correspondence. If you have quantitative proof of how you accomplished something, certainly add it. This can include measures of profit growth, reduction of debt or increase in customer base.
