We’re glad you’re here in this “fair port,” as a traveler called our town back in 1829. With more than 5,000 residents and 300 business owners, this “Crown Jewel of the Erie Canal” surpasses expectations of residents and visitors alike. The great barges of yesteryear may have been replaced by recreational and tour vehicles, but this fine town openly welcomes residents and visitors to explore all there is to do and see.

In this directory, we feature businesses and organizations that keep our local economy strong. Visit these businesses to fully experience the glory that is Fairport. The village and town are full of neighbors ready to lend a helping hand and experienced business owners ready to lend their expertise. No need to travel far for what you need or want. Each business has a story, and the Fairport Chamber of Commerce and Fairport-Perinton Merchants Association have worked together to support area businesses and organizations to help them shine. About FPMA

The Fairport Perinton Merchants Association Inc. (FPMA) is a non-profit civic organization of retail, service and restaurant business owners in the Village of Fairport and the Town of Perinton.

The organization was formed in 1979 for the purpose of promoting local commerce in the area. There are many benefits of membership, including collective and subsidized advertising programs, broad social media reach and promotion, and the sharing of ideas with other local business owners.

The FPMA sponsors several events throughout the year, including Fairport Canal Days – a hugely popular

arts and crafts show held the first full weekend in June. Over 200,000 people attend the festival each year. Scarecrow Festival and Come Home for the Holidays events are sponsored by the FPMA as well! FPMA provides Fall and Christmas decor for the Village, and many other improvements for the beautification of our community. FPMA also contributes significant dollars to numerous local charitable organizations.

Why the new name? Since 1948, we have been bringing readers and local organizations/businesses together. The Erie Canal

Today, the village of Fairport is often synonymous with the Erie Canal. Anyone seeking refuge from the hustle and bustle that is city life heads to Fairport and its quaint streets full of friendly neighbors and natural beauty. However, a huge part of what makes the village such a “fair port” for folks to visit is the very canal that brought people and commerce to the area to begin with and for which Fairport is now known.

With 500 miles of interconnected waterways, the Erie Canalway, nearly 200 years young, was an engineering marvel of its day, sometimes called the Eighth Wonder of the World. Today, it is one of Western NY’s treasures, and Fairport boasts a beautiful part of the treasure.

From the Canal Days in June, the Music Festival in August, Oktoberfest and Scarecrow Festival in September, Home for the Holidays in December, festivals bring residents and visitors from across the region to our canalside. Miles of adventure await travelers by boat and on land. There’s so much to explore.

The historic liftbridge has become Fairport’s photographic icon, sealing the village as the epitome of a quaint small town. However, did you know that this steel lift bridge even allegedly appeared in Ripley’s Believe It or Not because of its unusual construction?

The bridge is an irregular decagon and crosses the canal at a 32-degree angle with a 4% slope, according to Erie Canal’s historic documentation. No two angles in the bridge are the same and no corners on the bridge are square. The bridge weighs 345.8 tons lifted by a 40-hp electric motor. Check out the bridge raising and lowering during canal season.

To enjoy the canal by water, take a guided tour on the Colonial Belle to learn more about the fascinating history of the canal, towns along the way, and the boat itself. Or launch your own watercraft at either 426 Ayrault or 99 O’Connor. If you don’t have your own craft, rent from the nearby shop. There are even small boat charter companies offering your own private limo-on-water, with or without narration, but always with scenic vistas of the canal’s natural beauty.

Aboard any watercraft, perhaps you’ll feel inclined to belt out the iconic Thomas Allen song, “Low Bridge, Everybody Down (Fifteen Years on the Erie Canal)” or consider the many other parodies canallers would sing along their trips.

Cycle or walk the towpath and imagine horses or mules pulling the barges of yesteryear along the path. Today’s volunteer canal stewards help maintain the waterway and the towpath and offer a wealth of knowledge and experience with the canal’s history.

Canal locks are open May 19th to October 11th.

The Fairport Perinton Partnership, which operates under the guidelines of the National Main Street Program, is a not-for-profit 501©3 organization with a mission of connecting resources in the community to stimulate economic development in the Town, Village and Hamlets of Bushnells Basin and Egypt.

The Partnership was established in 2000 to administer grant money for façade improvements under the framework of working with local government, local businesses, and residents to revitalize the village of Fairport. Over the years, the office grew to incorporate the Town of Perinton as well.

Having worked in the Partnership office in the mid-2000s, Nancy Ragus returned as Executive Director in February 2022. “Nancy has done a great job of getting the Partnership moving forward,” Perinton Town Supervisor Ciaran Hanna said. “The residents really benefit from everything the organization has to offer.”

Since their inception, the strength of the Partnership office lies in its volunteers. “We are a

community of people who understand and live by the belief that ‘a rising tide lifts all boats.’ You can see this in the vibrancy of our community that supporting each other in business as well as in our neighborhoods is doing just that,” said Ragus.

On April 8, 2024, our community will be in the path of totality for the Total Solar Eclipse that is estimated to be bringing 500,000 plus people to our region. This is one of the larger events that their office is working on with the RMSC, Visit Rochester, The Town of Perinton and Village of Fairport to bring education and awareness to the community as well as make the most of the economic impact it will bring to the businesses here. Other events the Partnership hosts are Fairport Oktoberfest and Clean Sweep while also supporting Fairport Perinton Merchants Association events like Canal Days and Scarecrow Festival, too. Combine these events with the canal, the Town of Perinton Skate Park and the Train Viewing Platform, and you’ve identified the forefront of the office’s focus when it comes to tourism and economic development opportunities.

The Fairport Office of Community and Economic Development is an innovative and collaborative organization that supports the continued growth of the Village of Fairport into the most sought-after destination in the region for residents, visitors and businesses.

We provide supportive assistance, with a personalized approach delivered by a dedicated local team with on the ground knowledge.

• Tax Incentives: Projects that include a significant capital investment and that will create jobs may be eligible for real property tax abatement and tax exemptions.

• Commercial Loans & Grants: Low interest loans are available for the acquisition, renovation or expansion of commercial real property or the purchase of equipment. Our Grant programs are developed to address issues impacting local business. These programs provide needed

financial assistance to help our local businesses weather disruptions due to construction projects, the pandemic and other factors.

• Housing: Projects that create or improve housing opportunities within the Village may be eligible for our grant or low income loan programs. We offer grants to limited income seniors or disabled homeowners for emergency, essential or safety related owner-occupied home improvements or repairs. Our Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) Program provides rent assistance to help tenants afford safe and decent housing in the private market. Our Front Porch Grant program encourages homeowners to enhance their homes and neighborhoods, keeping Fairport “Front Porch Friendly.” Visit

FAIRPORT FIRE DEPT.

A History of Tradition and Service

In March of 1877, a group of workers of the Deland Chemical Works organized to form the first fire company in the Village of Fairport. The fire company would come to be known as the Deland Hose Company No. 1 of Fairport. The charge of the fire company was initially the protection of the Deland Chemical Works, but in short time the company quickly was charged with protecting property across the Village of Fairport. In March of 1881 the Fairport Hook and Ladder Company was formed. Several years later in February of 1888 the Fairport Protectives Association was then formed. These three companies form the membership of the Fairport Fire Department as we see it today.

The first fifteen years of the department were relatively quiet with small easily controlled fires. This all changed on February 4, 1893. Early on that Saturday morning an alarm of fire was struck at the Deland Chemical Works. Newspaper reports of the time indicated that the fire quickly spread out of control. Due to cold weather, hose streams were frozen and not effective. Additionally, the Deland Fire

Company’s chemical engine had become frozen and was not effective at fighting the fire. Shortly thereafter, the fire protection water system would eventually be cut off from firefighters due to fire conditions. After realizing that additional equipment and help was needed, the Rochester Fire Department was telegraphed to provide equipment and manpower to help with controlling the fire. They would then end up bringing equipment and manpower by flat car to the Village of Fairport (this was prior to the mutual aid planning and cooperation that we take advantage of today). The fire would eventually result in the complete destruction of the Deland Chemical Works and the Village of Fairport’s electric light plant. As a result of this fire, the Village of Fairport would form its own water works to provide both drinking water to Village residents as well as water for the purposes of fire protection.

Over the years there have been several notable fires in the Village. Millstone Block Fire, Cottage Hotel Fire, Trescott Company Fire, Fireworks Company Fire of 1942, and Apton’s Antiques Fire are all fires of note over the close to one hundred and fifty year history of the department. At each and every one of these incidents, the proud members of the Fairport Fire Department were there to protect life and property. This is a mission that we still embrace today. Made up of roughly 60 volunteer members, we maintain a tradition of service to the public and our community.

Our professional staff provides clinical expertise and pre-hospital care of the highest quality, delivered with a commitment to achieving the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Is Perinton Ambulance emergency service free to me? Typically, our services are covered, in whole or in part, by your health insurance plan. Some portion may not be covered and may be billed directly to you, depending on your insurance. While we receive some tax funding from the Town of Perinton, we rely on the billing for our services and community donations to continue to invest in current the training, technology, and equipment which allows us to deliver the highest quality care necessary to save lives and keep our community healthy.

Is Perinton Ambulance still a volunteer organization? While our legacy is volunteer, we currently employ paramedical professionals on our staff of about 60 employees, with 23 full-time positions. For more than 55 years we’ve operated as a not-forprofit business, investing in the latest mobile medical technology and response vehicles. Over that time,

maintaining the level of clinical expertise and training required of EMS by government regulations created the demand and necessity for paid professionals to maintain adequate service to the community. After all, we responded to almost 6,000 calls last year.

Is emergency transport all you do? Beyond ambulance service and immediate expert medical and pre-hospital care, Perinton Ambulance is a critical health and safety resource to the community at large. We operate a community loan closet for medical equipment, health seminars, and car seat installations/ checks. We also offer American Heart Association CPR courses, First Aid, and Stop the Bleed training. Educating individuals and businesses to help prevent injury and illness and promote health and wellness is a priority. We also provide medical support at events such as Canal Days and Music Fest, and Perinton Amphitheater concerts.

Can I get Fairport Electric? The Fairport Municipal Commission has a 26 square mile franchise that covers all of the Village of Fairport and most of the Town of Perinton. The FMC website has a searchable map of our franchise. Unfortunately, if your home or business is outside of our franchise, the Fairport Municipal Commission will not be able to serve you.

How are Fairport Electric service area boundaries determined? Until sometime in the 1940s, nearby unserved residents could contribute a fee to install utility poles to their home and opt into electric service. When electric service became more common in the 1940s, the New York State Public Service Commission established exclusive service areas for each electric utility, including Fairport Electric. Once established, these boundaries are almost never changed.

Why is Fairport Electric so cheap? Fairport Electric’s rates are typically 1/3 less than that of other utilities in the region because electricity comes not only from the availability of hydropower, but also because Fairport Electric has not-for-profit status, and is small and well-managed. Fairport Electric receives an allocation of low-preference-priced hydropower.

That hydropower is generated at the Robert Moses Generating Facility at Niagara Falls, owned and operated by the New York Power Authority (NYPA). As a condition of generating power using the waters of the Niagara River, NYPA must sell a portion of its generation to municipal and investor-owned utilities at a low, preference price. Fairport Electric is a non-profit enterprise and can resell that power to its customers at a below-market price.

How is Fairport Electric, a municipally owned electric utility, different from investor-owned electric utilities like Rochester Gas & Electric or New York State Electric and Gas? Fairport Electric is “owned” by the residents (and electric customers) of the Village of Fairport and most of Perinton. An investor-owned utility is owned by shareholders. Fairport Electric’s operations are overseen by an appointed, five person Commission of local residents. An investor-owned utility is overseen by a Board of Directors.

The Fairport-Perinton Chamber of Commerce serves businesses well beyond Fairport Village, into Perinton, Bushnell’s Basin and Egypt. The Chamber exists to help mature and new businesses succeed in the marketplace of today’s fast-paced world. The main strategy is to connect member and business acquaintances within these greater business communities. This is accomplished through the hosting of monthly networking events, annual events, and by providing communication channels to share member news. The Chamber also provides educational opportunities for business development, to boost the skill set of attendees, assisting them on their paths to efficiently and cost-effectively achieve business goals. All of these experiences are coordinated through the Chamber’s Board, staffed by community volunteers. PERINTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The Society is a non-profit volunteer organization that operates the Fairport Museum at 18 Perrin Street in the Village of Fairport and maintains its collections. The Society began as a research organization founded by ten individuals on November 1, 1935 at the home of Mrs. Clarence Moore at 23 Pleasant Street.

This was a follow up meeting to an October 25 gathering at Mrs. Gardner Bown’s house at 127 South Main Street when the forming of a club for the recording and preservation of Perinton history was first suggested. The Society was incorporated in 1937.

Now over 80 years of documents and images have been collected. Some items from our collections are not found anywhere else.

Museum Hours of Operation: The Museum is free and open to the public on Tuesday and Sunday 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. We are closed in January and February. Support the Society with Your Membership:

Fairport on the Rise

Celebrating more than 150 years as a historic Erie Canal Village, Fairport is a celebrated community offering a high quality of life for its nearly 5,500 residents, 300 business owners and visitors. Fairport, “the Crown Jewel of the Erie Canal,” offers Victorianstyle family neighborhoods, quiet tree-lined streets and frontporch friendliness. As a growing destination for recreation, dining, craft breweries, distilleries and unique retail experiences, Fairport is truly a village “on the rise.”

Located in the heart of our Village is the Erie Canal and our recently restored unique lift bridge. There are park areas, viewing platforms and docks located on both the north and south banks of the canal. Liftbridge Lane West offers dedicated bike lanes, easy access to the canal trail, along with public seating to pause and enjoy the view. Also located on Liftbridge Lane West are the Village’s newly completed public restrooms.

Fairport is known for annual festivals like Canal Days and the Fairport Music Festival, bringing tens of thousands of visitors to the Village. Fairport is not only a “canal village,” but also a train community. The Fairport Junction train-viewing platform offers an opportunity for viewing of freight and passenger trains that pass through the village daily. Located near the platform is a retired caboose from the CSX rail line.

Village Hall is located at 31 South Main Street. Operations are run by the Village Manager and the Clerk-Treasurer. Village elected officials consist of a Mayor and 4 Trustees. Fairport has a Village Police Department which can be reached through the Monroe County 911 system. The Village also has their own municipal electric service with the Fairport Municipal Commission, also known as Fairport Electric. Fairport Electric not only supports the Village’s electric needs, but also those of approximately 20,000 customers located in the Town of Perinton. How do I rent a building, shelter, field, court or dock space?

Please call (585) 223-5050 or visit www.perinton.org. Park buildings can be found at Perinton Park, Fellows Road Park, and White Brook Nature Area. They are fully enclosed with heat, a refrigerator, oven, microwave, tables, and chairs. Park shelters are covered, open air pavilions located at Center Park, Egypt Park, Fellows Road Park, Kreag Road Park, Perinton Park, and White Brook Nature Area. Athletic fields and courts are available to rent for sports groups and families. Bushnell’s Basin and Perinton Park have a floating dock available for boats.

What services are offered at the Town Clerk’s Office?

E-ZPass On-the-Go tags, marriage licenses, hunting and fishing licenses, dog licenses, landfill permits, accessibility parking permits, peddlers’ permits, passport applications, notary services, and tax information and collection. Note that NYS Law requires every dog over four months of age to be licensed annually by the local municipality in which they reside. The Town of Perinton issues dog licenses for residents in the Town of Perinton & the Village of Fairport.

Who picks up my garbage and recycling in the Town of Perinton? Find a list of private trash and recycling haulers available to Town residents on our website or by contacting Perinton Public Works at (585) 223-5115. As an alternative to curbside trash pick-up, residents can pay per trip at Waste Management’s Residential Drop-Off located at High Acres Landfill - recycling drop-off is free of charge. To find guidelines on the materials and appliances Public Works will pick up at the curb, visit www.perinton.org.

What 55+ programs are offered? If you are 55 years of age or older, you are eligible to participate in the many active recreational, social and educational programs offered at the Perinton Community/ Aquatic Center. Our shuttle bus provides transportation on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Seniors age 65+ with medicare coverage often qualify for a free fitness membership. Our 1350 Café offers

When do I need a building permit in the Town of Perinton?

Typical projects that require a building permit include: decks, porches, three-season rooms, additions, interior alterations, finishing a basement, fireplaces, wood-burning stoves, chimneys and gas inserts, attached or detached garages, and sheds. In addition, the installation of sanitary, water service and irrigation systems, alterations to windows or doors, all pools that can hold 24 inches or more of water and hot tubs, automatic fire alarms, extensions or modifications to the plumbing, heating/cooling, ventilation and electrical systems, generators, and fences. Am I eligible for any tax exemptions? The Town Assessment Office administers all partial tax exemptions, as allowed under the NYS Real Property Tax Law, to property owners who meet certain eligibility requirements. The most common residential exemptions are STAR (School taxes only), Senior Citizen with Limited Income, Disability with Limited Income, and Veterans (Town and County taxes only). Contact the Assessment Office for additional information at (585) 223-0770.

What is included in a fitness pass at the Perinton Community Center? A fitness pass includes uses of the cardio room, weight room, and pool. For more information on the facility and pricing, please visit www.perinton.org or call (585) 223-5050. Note the walking track is free to residents.

Where do my Town tax dollars go? On average, $7 of every $100 on your tax bill supports Perinton’s Town Budget. Perinton’s full value tax rate has been one of the four lowest in Monroe County for more than 35 years. Tax information is public information, which is available online at the Monroe County website at www.monroecounty.gov. You can pay by credit card online (processing fees apply), or at the Perinton Town Clerk’s Office located at Town Hall, 1350 Turk Hill Rd., Fairport, NY 14450.

CYCLE THE ERIE CANAL BIKE TOUR

July 9-16, 2023

Our 25th anniversary tour! Every summer, cyclists leave their cars behind in Buffalo to pedal along the historic Erie Canalway Trail to Albany for Parks & Trails New York’s annual Cycle the Erie Canal bike tour. The 400-mile journey along the legendary Erie Canal ends in Albany eight days later. Along the way, cyclists enjoy some of the finest scenery, most interesting history, and unparalleled cycling in the United States. Covering between 40 and 60 miles per day, cyclists travel along the Erie Canalway Trail, which is now more than 85 percent complete and the east-west axis of the statewide 750-mile Empire State Trail.
