PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic. “On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.” He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year. Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected. Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard. If you are thinking of new windows, Kasunic agrees that this is the best time for both availability and price. Learn More: For further facts and advice, go to www.windownation.com.

It’s important to expect the unexpected when embarking on home renovations. Budgeting for hidden costs, expecting delays and coping with the upheaval to daily schedules are par for the remodeling course. However, the end result is often well worth the time and effort.
One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

THE SIMILARITIES BETWEEN PASSOVER AND EASTER To the casual observer, Passover and Easter may not to seem to have much in common. While the two holidays are celebrated by people of different faiths, they share certain similarities. Both Passover and Easter celebrate fundamental tenets of their respective faiths. For Christians, Easter commemorates the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, a moment that has shaped the lives of faithful Christians ever since. During Passover, Jews honor a moment in history that helped free slaves from captivity and shape them into the people of Israel. In addition, historians believe that the Passion of Christ, which is the short final period of Jesus’ life, occurred during the observance of Pesach, or Passover. During this time, Jesus went to Jerusalem in response to a mandate to appear at the Temple. It also is believed that the Last Supper described in all four Gospels was likely a Passover seder. Liberation and rebirth also are at the heart of both holidays. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

The Real Secret of the Damascus Shriners
F
or many, the name “Shriners” may conjure up images of mini cars in parades and a man in a maroon fez holding a child. However, these things only hint at all the Shriners are and do. The Shriners is an offshoot fraternity of the Freemasons, or just “Masons.” This means that while all Shriners are Masons, not all Masons choose to become Shriners. Few have truly understood this incredible organization, shrouded with mystery. Monument Mo nt iin fr frontt of the “There have been many silly Damascus Shrine rumors about us,” said Bruce Katz, an officer of the Damascus Shriners. “But basically, we’re a fraternity. We’re the second oldest out of the nearly-200 Shrine Centers. In the 1870s, one of the thirteen founders, an actor named Billy Fleming, had attended a Middle Eastern-themed party in Europe, and he brought the idea of the Shriners, with a similar theme, back with him. A Cofounder, Dr. Fleming, brought the idea to Rochester.” “The Masons of today trace their origins back to the stone masons of the Middle Ages,” explained Katz. “These masons had trade secrets to protect, so they would give each other secret phrases and handshakes as they rose through the levels of trades. Our purpose within the group is to make good men better,” said Katz. During the 1920s, this purpose took on a greater meaning. The year 1916 saw the beginning of the Polio Epidemic. It was proposed to start a hospital for crippled children, but nothing had been decided. At the annual meeting in 1922, one Shriner finally demanded, “Are we going to do something for these children, or are we just going to keep blowing bubbles?” The first Shriners Hospital for Children opened the following year in Shreveport, Louisiana. “The Damascus Shriners supports our Erie, PA and Springfield, MA Children’s Hospitals,” Katz stated. Katz described a highly recognizable image symbolizing their work: a Shriner wearing a maroon fez with a black tassel and holding a little girl. “He epitomized one of our greatest ideals,” said Katz. “‘No man stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child.’” At the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children, treatment is given without regard to the families’ ability to pay; transportation can also be provided. “Shriners hospitals focus on orthopedic surgery, orthotics (devices to correct and straighten limbs), and prosthetics,” explained Katz, who is an associate member of the board of governors at the Springfield hospital. “It is amazing to go to see these children running around with prosthetics, all colorful and decorated,” Katz said. Springfield also has specialty support for pediatric urology and cleft lip & palate; other locations treat burn and spinal problems. These not-for-profit hospitals are supported by Shriners and their generous donors. “Globally, the Shriners spend $1.5 million on our hospitals per day,” said Katz. “We consistently work to raise these funds. Our car cruise nights, which will run Friday evenings from May 31st until September 6, regularly attract 300-400 show cars and visitors, contributing over $25,000 to the hospitals last year. We are planning to add a Super Cruise Night this year.” The Damascus Shriners will also hold a Sportsmen’s Raffle on April 27th. “We will be focusing on updating our facility, too, which is available for rental.” said Katz. “Our location has a magnificent view of Irondequoit Bay. It also includes picnic tables, a pavilion and a hall with a full-service commercial kitchen and a full bar.” The chief officer of Damascus Shiners, known as the “potentate,” is Jerry Lack. Under his leadership, the Damascus Shriners are moving

forward with several initiatives, including addressing membership. “Things are different than they were 100 years ago,” Katz said. “By tradition, we don’t ask a man to join Masons,” explained Katz. “He has to ask.” The Damascus Shriners are hoping a few good men will seek them out. “I became involved when I saw retirement approaching,” shared Katz. “We do have some members who are in their 20s, as well, and we welcome these younger men.” There are related groups for ladies and children, also: the Daughters of the Nile (women), the Order of the Eastern Star (coed), the Order of DeMolay (boys), and the Triangle (girls). “On our Utica Campus, New York Masons operate retirement homes and a world-class Heart Institute. Another local Masonic group is the Lalla Rookh Grotto, the oldest functioning Grotto in existence, which focuses on dental treatment for children with mental disabilities.” The Damascus Shrine Center in Webster also houses the Masonic Service Bureau, which operates a Medical Equipment Loan Closet. “We receive several specialty items such as crutches, wheel chairs, transport chairs, walkers, and commodes, as well as cases of Depends,” said Service Bureau Executive Secretary Jan Porter. The Loan Closet serves an - Bruce Katz 8-county area, without respect to residence. Every item is cleaned, checked thoroughly for safety and disinfected. There is no charge, but some items, like wheel chairs, require a small security deposit. This is the true secret of the Damascus Shriners. Without fanfare and often without notice, they work hard to improve the lives of so many. They provide treatment and resources for children with medical needs, without regard to the families’ ability to pay. Quietly, faithfully, they continue changing lives. For more information about the Damascus Shriners, visit www.damascusshrinemasons.org or call 585 671-7701. Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? Meet Abby! I’m your typical sweet as pie girly girl! When I was only a few months old, I had to get one of my front legs removed, but that hasn’t slowed me down one bit. I’m the cutest tripod around! I love exploring the world and strutting my stuff on walks, or as I call them a “flexi”. Mom always lets me bring a special toy on our walks and keeps a watchful eye to make sure I don’t drop it and leave it behind. I also love chasing “the spot” (a laser pointer) around the house, and when I’m finally all tuckered out, cuddling up into Mom and Dad’s arms! Ahh, what a beautiful life! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

The experts in holistic care at Dogs Naturally Magazine say that long nails that will come in contact with hard ground can push back up into the nail bed and cause discomfort. Long nails also may cause the toes to twist. Most dogs require their nails be trimmed every two weeks. This time period may be extended if the dog goes for long walks frequently. HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Invest in new cookware. Choose nonstick cookware that will reduce the amount of oil, spray and butter needed to keep foods from sticking. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF DEPRESSION There are different types of depression. A person may have a single bout of major depression or recurring episodes. Depression that lasts two or more years is called persistent depressive disorder. A less common type of depression is called manic-depressive illness. This involves cycles of depression that alternate with extreme highs, or manias.

what causes it or what I can do to prevent it from happening to me again. I was given two medications, promethazine for nausea and meclizine for vertigo, but still the problem persists. Can you offer some kind of help? -- J.G. ANSWER: Vertigo is the sensation of movement when not moving. Although it is classically described as a spinning sensation, some people feel as if they or the world is moving in other ways. There are many causes of vertigo, but we generally break them down into two groups: peripheral causes, from the vestibular nerve, which connects your brain with the organ of balance in the inner ear; and central causes, from the brain itself. Peripheral causes are much more common and generally are labelled “benign,” even though they can be quite severe. Central causes are most commonly attributed to vestibular migraine and poor blood flow to the brainstem. Only a careful exam and, occasionally, more sophisticated tests can reveal the underlying cause of the vertigo. The most common cause is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, and I suspect that is what you were being treated for, having received a nonspecific treatment for vertigo. Although it is commonplace, I disagree with this treatment if it is used for more than a day or two, and then only in people whose symptoms are severe. Most people get relief from an office treatment called the Epley maneuver. They can continue at home with other exercises. I would suggest that you ask your doctor about these procedures, and if he or she isn’t familiar with them, it might be wise to consult with an expert. In any event, vertigo is a symptom that can arise from several distinct medical conditions. You should find out what your diagnosis is. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I would like your opinion of taking a vitamin B complex capsule. A friend recommended it, but the dose of one to two capsules a day makes my urine turn bright-yellow. The daily values are from 3,000 to 8,000 percent, and that seems pretty high to me. I don’t enjoy taking it, because it smells and tastes unpleasant, but I’m mostly concerned about getting too much of a “good” thing. -- R.W. ANSWER: Here’s the good news: B vitamins are necessary, and your body is able to get rid of any excess. In fact, the yellow color of your urine is exactly that, your body spilling off the B vitamins you don’t need. There are a few medical conditions that benefit from B vitamins. Here’s the not-so-good news: You almost certainly don’t need so much, and most people don’t benefit from taking vitamins at all. A healthy diet with lots of fruits and vegetables gives you most of the B vitamins your body needs. (Vitamin B-12, by contrast, is found only in animal products, which is why vegans require supplementary B-12.) If you choose to keep taking a vitamin just for general health, I would change to a brand that has lower doses and isn’t unpleasant to take. I don’t recommend stopping megadose multivitamins suddenly. This is particularly important for vitamin C, where symptoms of deficiency can show up temporarily in people who suddenly stop high doses. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Ten Easy Ways To Get A Dose Of Vitamin N(ature) In Just Ten Minutes (NAPS)—A growing body of scientific evidence proves getting outside (i.e., being an “outsider”) is good for our health and well-being. Exploring and appreciating nature—in our own backyards, community parks and school yards—reduces stress, improves memory, boosts heart health, and offers a host of other benefits for our minds and bodies. “Having a living landscape of grass, trees, shrubs and flowering plants is good. Using this outdoor space to reap the health benefits it offers is even better,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), whose Foundation created TurfMutt, an environmental education and stewardship program that teaches the value and benefits of the outdoors. “Getting outside, even for just 10 minutes, can do much to boost your mood, productivity, and quality of life.” On its 10th anniversary, TurfMutt shares 10 easy ways you can enjoy nature in under 10 minutes. Take a walk. Lace up your athletic shoes and head out for a walk around the block or to your neighborhood park. While you’re out, commit to turning off your cell phone and enjoying the natural setting around you (it’s just 10 minutes, after all!). Get your kids moving. A rousing game of tag or hide-and-seek in the family yard is a great way to counter computer and screen time. Play with your dog. A dog’s favorite “room” of the house is your family yard. Take inspiration from your pooch and spend a few minutes outside playing Frisbee or fetch. Clean up your outdoor living room. Make simple work of yard chores by breaking them up into smaller chunks. Ten minutes is enough time to put a serious dent in weeding a flower bed, sweeping off the back patio, or picking up debris from your lawn. Plant something. It is spring planting season, so take 10 minutes to dig a hole and introduce a new plant or get started on your vegetable garden or flower beds. Dine alfresco. Taking a meal outside is one of the easiest—and most nourishing—ways to enjoy the outdoor space around you. Have breakfast with the backyard birds. Lunch at a park near your office. Enjoy your coffee break under a shade tree. Study or read a book. Take the “work” out of homework by moving study or reading sessions to your backyard or community green space. Swap a (short) commute for walking or biking. Do you typically use your car to run down to the mailbox, to a nearby convenience store, or to run other nearby daily errands? If it’s not too far, take a short walk or ride your bike instead. Meet outside. Fresh air can be a catalyst for fresh ideas, so take your next brainstorming session for work outdoors. Need to have a heart-to-heart with your child? Scientists have discovered that communication between parents and children is more connected when conducted outside. Sit back and relax. Sometimes, the best thing to do is absolutely nothing at all. Spend some time in a hammock, spread a blanket out on the grass, or take a meditation break outside to soak up the nature around you. Learn More For more information on the benefits of our living landscapes and how to be an outsider, visit www.SaveLivingLandscapes.com. For more about the TurfMutt program, go to www.TurfMutt.com.
• On April 15, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln dies from an assassin's bullet. Shot by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater in Washington the night before, Lincoln lived for nine hours before succumbing to the severe head wound he sustained. • On April 19, 1876, a Wichita, Kansas, commission votes not to rehire policeman Wyatt Earp after he beats up a candidate for county sheriff. Earp often worked in law enforcement, but his own allegiance to the rule of law was conditional at best. Wyatt was one of the Earp brothers, who gained fame in the shootout at the O.K. Corral in 1881. • On April 20, 1926, inventor Lee de Forest demonstrates Phonofilm (music recorded on motion picture film) to movie studios, but they were not interested in "talking pictures," believing sound was a novelty.
For all those clamoring for the Hocus Focus, here it is… You’ll find it each week in the Active Living 50+ Section. Enjoy!
Getting outside is good for your mind and body.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You’re doing better on the flexibility issue, but you still need to loosen up a bit to show you can be less judgmental and more understanding about certain sensitive matters. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your personal aspect continues to dominate this week. But try to make time to deal with important career-linked matters as well. A change of plans might occur by the weekend. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Excuses are not really needed for much of the confusion occurring this week. However, explanations from all parties could help in working things out to everyone’s satisfaction. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) That surprising (but pleasant) recent turn of events continues to develop positive aspects. But be prepared for a bit of a jolt on another issue that needs attention. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Creating a fuss might bring you that attention you want. But are you prepared for all the explaining you’d have to do? Better to use more subtle ways to make your bid. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With education continuing to be a strong factor this week, this could be the time to start learning some new skills that can later be applied to a bid for a potential career move. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might do well to reconsider some of your current time priorities before you get so deeply involved in one project that you neglect meeting a deadline on another. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) With an important decision looming, you need to be careful about the information you’re getting. Half-truths are essentially useless. Get the full story before you act. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Find out what everyone’s role is expected to be before accepting that workplace proposal. Getting all the facts now could prevent serious problems later on. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A flexible position on a workplace matter could be the best course to follow during the next several days. A personal issue also benefits from an open-minded approach. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Involving too many people in your workplace problem can backfire. Remember: Allegiances can shift. Ask trusted colleagues for advice, but don’t ask them to take sides. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Before submitting your suggestions, take more time to sharpen the points you want to make. The clearer the presentation, the more chance it has to get through when submitted. BORN THIS WEEK: Your clear sense of who you are gives you confidence when you need to tackle difficult situations. DINING OUT WITH INFANTS
Tues.-Thurs. 4pm-9pm, Fri. 4pm-10pm, Sat. 11am-10pm, Sun. 11am-8pm
New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.
TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. We lost a set of car keys months ago. We had an app that told us generally where we left our them which was in the parking lot of the Twisted Rail. I was skeptical that we would ever find our keys again and I took a risk that To the person who complained about being wished “a happy holiday”. I read several objections to your comments. One said you should not say Merry Christmas as you may offend someone. Another said you are being insensitive and disrespectful. I applaud you for saying Merry Christmas. someone turned them in. When I finally got around to searching for the keys, I went directly to Twisted Rail based on GPS signals. Not only did they hold on to the keys that were turned in, they waited several months for us to track them down. When I finally went to talk to them, they acted like I was a regular, and just returned the keys and told me they were waiting for me. Even though I’ve never been a customer, I have a great respect to this company for going a little extra to help those in need. Thank you for being

greeting they receive, the color of people’s clothes, lack of manners, etc., etc. I am sure these issues are very important to the people who write them but, in the meantime, our elected officials are acting like toddlers, doing nothing to improve our lives and mismanaging our tax money. I think that we need to get past the everyday annoyances and focus on the big, important things that are going on around us that really need to be changed.
This might sound pathetic but I get some of my entertainment from reading the I gotta vent column. Everything was going great until they changed the pictures by the subtitle. And when I opened the Penny Saver today, guess what I found not only are there no pictures but it is now called “positive vibes only”. And “gotta rant”. Seriously...why?
Local full-service gas station. Great service, speedy friendly workers. Great customer service! Dave’s Ice Cream had just opened for spring. My husband loves their twists. and can only do so much. Therefore, I am asking our communities to first please stop using the roadways as a garbage can and second when you clean up your property don’t ignore the trash along the edges and consider going above and beyond and clean up more along the road. Third consider individually or as a group adopting sections of roadways. The environment is the responsibility of all. This problem is almost entirely preventable and it is entirely fixable. Let’s be part of the solution with a little elbow grease.

TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY When adopting more eco-friendly lifestyles, it can be easy for men and women to overlook their offices. While drivers can drive in ways that conserve fuel and homeowners can take steps to reduce their energy consumption at home, few people may give as much thought to making their offices more friendly to the environment. But there are many environmentally friendly practices that business owners and their employees can adopt around the office.
