KEEP ANIMALS OUT OF YOUR GARDEN Consider raised garden beds. When small critters, such as moles, are the main problem, then raised garden beds with wood or plastic bottoms and sides can be enough to safeguard gardens. Raised garden beds might not be accessible to small critters, though such beds likely won’t deter larger animals from getting into gardens that are not barricaded.

UPGRADE ATTIC INSULATION TO SAVE ON ENERGY EXPENSES
OTHER
(NAPSI)—One of the most cost-effective ways to make your home more comfortable year-round is to add insulation to your attic, including the attic trap or access door. By sealing uncontrolled air leaks, points out the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save 10 percent to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills. Fortunately, this can be a relatively easy task.

Why Improve Your Insulation An improperly insulated attic can be a preventable source of energy loss and unnecessary expense. Over time, insulation can settle or compact, which reduces its R-value. An insulating material’s resistance to conductive heat flow is measured or rated in terms of its thermal resistance or R-value— the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness. A breezy attic may also result in drifts or shifts in your original insulation, leaving gaps where heat can escape. By topping up your attic insulation, you’ll increase the thermal level, reducing your overall energy usage and saving you money.
716-292-1680 • Jay
How To Do It A simple way to do this is to topup the existing insulation in your attic. This is one project that homeowners can often tackle for themselves. Look for timesaving, easy-to-install products, such as stone wool batts, that are easy to work with and don’t require costly blower rentals, protective clothing or an investment in expensive equipment. You can easily add Rockwool ComfortBatt insulation on top of most existing insulation to increase R-value in an attic without having to do any remediation or removal first. The batts will remain stable and won’t shift after they are put in place, ensuring upgraded thermal protection. They’re also: • Easily cut • Noncombustible • Excellent for sound absorbency • Not likely to rot or promote growth of fungi or mildew • Water and moisture resistant. To apply the insulation, simply begin in one corner of the attic, open the bag and place the stone wool batts as needed to get a consistent layer throughout the attic. Make sure to cover spaces around ducts, wiring and piping, converting these awkward spaces into energy-saving areas. One of the advantages of stone wool batts is their compatibility with other insulation types, eliminating any need to remove existing product. Learn More: For further facts and tips on insulation, go to www.rockwool.com/products/comfortbatt.

M aintain tire balance and alignment for a smooth ride Tire alignment is a w ay to reduce w ear on tires and help avoid steering and “ pulling” problems. Bridgestone Tires defines tire alignment as an adjustment of the vehicle’s suspension, or the system that connects a vehicle to its w heels. W hen tires are not properly aligned, drivers may notice uneven tread w ear. M isaligned tires also may cause the vehicle to pull to the left or right. Drivers w ho notice their steering w heel is off-center or vibrating w hen they are driving may need to adjust their tires’ alignment. Camber, or the inw ard or outw ard angle of the tire w hen view ed from the front of the vehicle, w ill be adjusted. In addition, “ toe,” or the extent to w hich the tires turn inw ard or outw ard w hen view ed from above, w ill be adjusted. Caster angle also helps balance steering, stability and cornering. Caster is the angle of your steering axis w hen view ed from the side of your vehicle. W hen tires are balanced correctly and aligned, vehicles w ill offer a smooth ride w ith little to no vibrations. Having tires serviced can maximize their performance and lifespan.

Four Ways To Remain Mentally Sharp In Retirement
\(NAPS)—Many retirees share a fear of gradually losing their ability to think as clearly as they used to or remember simple information such as other people’s names. And while everyone has the occasional “senior moment,” medical research indicates that aging by itself is generally not a cause of cognitive decline. “Studies have shown that you can help prevent cognitive decline and reduce the risk of dementia with some basic good health habits,” according to Harvard Medical School’s Healthbeat newsletter. Here are four simple steps to keep your mind sharp at any age: 1. Exercise: It’s important to stay physically active. Simple routines such as taking exercise classes at your health club or taking walks in your neighborhood every day can do wonders for your mental health. Just get moving. “The cognitive benefits of exercise have been understood for so long,” notes the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. 2. Serve: Research published by the American Psychological Association found that volunteering in later life “is associated with significant psychosocial, physical, cognitive and functional benefits for healthy older adults.” Science is now confirming what many have learned by experience: People often feel better after they have served others and enjoyed the time spent helping someone else. 3. Learn: Experts think that ongoing education and learning new things may help keep you mentally sharp simply by getting you in the habit of staying mentally active. Take a class from a senior center or community college, make it a habit to visit the library and pick up a new book each week. “Challenging your brain with mental exercise is believed to activate processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication among them,” according to Harvard Medical School. 4. Finances: A study published by The Journals of Gerontology found that “financial strain was a strong and robust predictor of worsening mental health” among older adults, including anxiety and depression symptoms. Another way to help keep yourself mentally healthy in retirement is to make sure you have ample cash on hand to help pay off unexpected health care bills or fund any renovations that might need to be made to your home. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy. A life insurance policy is considered your personal property and—as such—you have the right to sell that policy anytime you like. When a consumer sells a policy in a “life settlement” transaction, the policy owner receives a cash payment and the purchaser of the policy assumes all future premium payments—then receives the death benefit upon the death of the insured. Candidates for life settlements are typically aged 70 years or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. To learn more about life settlements, visit www.LISA.org or call the LISA office at (888) 672-3917. You can keep your brain sharp and supple, when you put your mind to it. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SALOME’S STARS ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes isn’t easy for you. But if you do it, you’ll gain a better perspective of what you need to do to achieve your goals. Be open to new ideas. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) There are still some problems you might have to deal with before moving on to your next project. It’s a good idea to accept help from those who share your objectives. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It’s time to recognize the difference between those who are truly concerned for you and those who simply plan to use your good nature to their advantage. New ideas become increasingly attractive. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Depending on a promise made becoming a promise kept could be more than a mite unwise at this time. It’s best to proceed on your own rather than wait for aid that might never arrive. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A recently revitalized relationship might not be quite what the Big Cat expected. But give yourself more time to deal with the changes. A little flexibility can go a long way. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A major change could prompt more adjustments. Some of them might be difficult to deal with at first. But hang in there, and before you know it, you’ll be coasting to your next goal. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your sense of justice prompts you to speak out against an unfair situation, even if you seem to be the only one who feels that way. But you soon learn that many others agree with you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Creating a fuss is not usually your style. But that doesn’t mean you should tolerate an ill-mannered attitude. Speak up for yourself, and you’ll earn the respect of others. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You might have a few loose ends to tie up before you can stamp your project as complete. But once that’s done, you might want to celebrate with someone special in your life. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Disappointment darkens the Goat’s mood. But close friends rally to pull you through with words of encouragement. Use their confidence in you to rebuild your own self-esteem. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) An upcoming decision might be more difficult with inaccurate information. Best to recheck the data you have at hand right now to be sure it won’t mislead you later. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) An offer you previously turned down might no longer be available. But if you do some checking around, you could find something else that would suit you just fine. BORN THIS WEEK: You believe in helping those who cannot help themselves. Although it embarrasses you, the fact is, people like you and tell you so. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

To the party who left 2 bags of garbage at the end of my driveway on 1/15/19: You left it after the collector stopped at my house. I went through your garbage: Cheesecake factory, McDonald’s, Subway, Marketplace food take out, canned cat food, Powerade bottles, purple colored Friendly’s ice cream, dryer lint. And you left a piece of paper that identifies who you are. If you are having difficulty with the disposal of your garbage, there are resources to help you. Assuming you can just leave your trash at a random house, however, is not the answer. Please ask for help if you are in need. It is all around you, but you have to ask. DEAR DR. ROACH: With the flu season coming on, would you please discuss the difference between what people call the “stomach flu” and what the flu really is? I have two friends who said they weren’t getting the flu shot anymore because despite having it, they got the flu. They each described several hours of throwing up, but feeling better the next day. I suggested that they probably had a gastrointestinal episode and not influenza, which is a respiratory disease. They insisted that they had the flu, and they’d always learned that the stomach flu is influenza and the flu shot is meant to prevent it. Since then I’ve spoken to two others who believe the same thing. -- G.C. ANSWER: You are right that there is much confusion about what influenza is. Influenza typically begins with sudden onset of fever, headache, fatigue and severe body and muscle aches. Influenza occurs about two days after exposure. There also often are symptoms of cough, sore throat and nasal discharge, just as there are with the common cold, but the sudden onset, fever (commonly 100 to 104 degrees) and muscle aches help distinguish cold from flu. Gastrointestinal symptoms -- such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea -- are less common in influenza, and these symptoms in absence of the major manifestations listed above makes the diagnosis of flu very unlikely. In late fall through early spring, some diarrheal illnesses (mostly viral) are common, but you are correct that these are NOT influenza. The flu shot contains viral proteins, not live influenza, and it is incapable of causing the flu. Many people will have a sore arm and sometimes mild fever and body aches after a flu shot. This is just part of the body’s reaction, and it goes away by itself within 24 hours. There is a live influenza vaccine given by nasal spray, which also generally has mild side effects. This may be given to adults under 50. The flu shot is not perfect: You still can get the flu after receiving the shot. However, the flu shot is effective at reducing the most serious cases of flu, such as influenza pneumonia, which can be life-threatening or fatal. ***

recently had my gallbladder removed. What are the effects of not having this organ? -- I.T. ANSWER: The gallbladder stores bile and release it when necessary after a meal. Bile is made by the liver and is needed for proper digestion, especially of fats. After gallbladder removal, usually because of gallstones, the liver takes over the job by storing bile in bile ducts, and releasing it at the right time, under the influence of hormones, such as cholecystokinin. After surgery, most people have no problems with digestion, as their body gets used to the new status quo after a few weeks. Rarely, people who have had their gallbladder removed can develop postcholecystectomy syndrome, which manifests as upper abdominal pain. There are several possible causes. Discovering it requires expert evaluation, usually by the surgeon, and it often involves CT scans and a special kind of MRI (MRCP) to evaluate the biliary tract. Retained stones in the bile ducts, leakage of bile and strictures (narrowings) in the bile ducts are the most common causes of PCS. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons. Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said. Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively. Learn More: For more information, go to www.vendini.com.

SISTERS TOGETHER: MOVE MORE, EAT BETTER (NAPSI)—Obesity is a serious health problem in the United States. More than one in three U.S. adults have obesity and that number increases to more than half—57 percent—among U.S. black women. Research has shown that excess weight may contribute to high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease and certain kinds of cancer. To help address the problem of obesity, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) has updated the program guide for the popular Sisters Together: Move More, Eat Better national health awareness program. It encourages black women to reach and maintain a healthy weight by being more physically active and making healthier food choices.
IDEAS FOR FAST AND EASY ENTERTAINING Chill wine effectively and quickly. On a similar note, if wine is the beverage of choice, always keep grapes frozen in a bag in the freezer. Put a few grapes in a wine glass before pouring, and the wine will be chilled without becoming watered down by ice.

• Steps to help evaluate and sustain a program • A sample in-kind donation request letter and other forms. The NIDDK encourages anyone who sees a need in his or her community to consider starting a Sisters Together program. The program guide is a free digital resource, available from the NIDDK website, that offers information on how to develop, promote, fund, evaluate and sustain a program. The guide includes sample forms, e-mails and social media posts that users can copy and modify to suit their specific needs. While the resources are aimed at black women ages 18 and older, they can be adapted to promote the “move more, eat better” message among women, youths or men of any age, race, ethnicity or community. Sisters Together began in 1994 as a pilot program conducted by the NIDDK’s Weight-control Information Network (WIN) and several partners in Boston. Based on the success of the pilot program, WIN created the program guide and other resources to support the development of local Sisters Together programs nationwide. Over the past 20 years, local groups across the country have formed partnerships with health centers, local media, recreation centers and other groups to start new Sisters Together programs. 2019 MEG’s Gift Golf Tournament Donates $45,000 to NAMI Rochester to Increase Youth Mental Health Awareness N
AMI Rochester is thrilled to announce that the Board of MEG’s Gift selected their organization as the recipient of the proceeds of their annual golf tournament. Rochester’s NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) chapter was founded in 1982 by a passionate group of mothers affectionately known as “the NAMI Mommies.” The moms all each had children who were about to age out of the mental health care which was available to them only until the beginning of young adulthood. These dedicated parents developed the nonprofit group for concerned parents around a kitchen table to consist of a board, 3 staff members and dozens of volunteers. In November 2018, members of the NAMI Rochester team met at Boulder Coffee in Rochester’s South Wedge with members of the MEG’s Gift team for a check presentation. “We are honored to be chosen as the beneficiary of this year’s event, and so grateful for our relationship with Meg’s family and their team. This generous donation will allow NAMI Rochester to expand mental health and suicide prevention efforts with local youth through our Ending the Silence program”, said Kristina Mossgraber, Event Coordinator and Educator with NAMI Rochester. Ending the Silence is a program offered in local schools at the middle or high school level teaching students about mental health & illness, warning signs, suicide prevention and how to get help. This is NAMI Rochester’s fastest growing signature program, having started in the 2015 — 2016 school year locally with just a few schools, and through the first half of this school year, over 10,000 students have been through the program in 37 schools. “We spend hours each day trying to coordinate people for this program because we receive so many requests,” adds Mossgraber. The contribution from MEG’s Gift will directly support the materials and other resources required to sustain and grow this program. Last year’s recipient of the golf tournament was the local chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, which has chosen to bring Hakeem Rahim, a leading national speaker on mental health and suicide prevention, to Rochester for a multi-school speaking tour in early March. NAMI Rochester will be co-sponsoring this event with AFSP, which will include programs for students and families during his visit, and is grateful that this generous donation will allow for this partnership. AFSP and NAMI Rochester are committed to increasing awareness of mental health and suicide prevention in our community through their signature programs, support offerings and guest speakers.

Submitted by Kristina Mossgraber Expanded by Amanda Dudek “There is still a stigma around mental health concerns,” said Mossgraber. “A lot of the warning signs, especially with mood disorders, can feel embarrassing and shameful, but if we don’t talk about the warning signs, people won’t know how to get help.” Mossgraber explained that one exciting thing about NAMI Rochester’s programs is that they are teaching children, parents and other adults about mental health, warning signs and how to get help and support. “It’s so exciting to have a parent and teacher aspect to this program,” Mossgraber shared. “Kids cannot be expected to navigate this issue by themselves.” “There are so many awesome things going on!” said Mossgraber. “We have a class called Family-to-Family which is a 12-week class including both the person with mental health conditions and those in their family network. We have been offering this class for many, many years. It runs in semesters, a spring and a fall class, and each of these cap off at 25 participants. We always fill them and have a waiting list.” Mossgraber explains that two years ago NAMI Rochester held two classes at the same time. Both filled up and were successful, so NAMI hopes to consistently offer two classes at a time in the future, as well. “We also have a 10-week session peer-to-peer class, and all of our programs are at no cost, meaning participants get all of our nationally developed education and support resources for free!” Mossgraber explains that many people come to NAMI Rochester just trying to figure out their next steps, with or without a diagnosis. She explains that NAMI is there to support them, giving them advice and understanding. MEG’s Gift will go a long way in supporting NAMI Rochester’s endeavors. MEG’s Gift is a not-for-profit organization created to honor her legacy. The mission of MEG’s Gift is to positively impact mental health care in the Rochester community through financial support, education and advocacy, with a particular focus on youth. To learn more about MEG’s Gift, please visit www.megsgift.org. NAMI Rochester is the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, the county’s largest grassroots mental health organization committed to providing support, education and advocacy to those living with a mental health condition and their families. (NAPSI)—The United States has long been considered a leader in entrepreneurial pursuits, with everyone from ambitious self-starters to certified moguls making their way here from around the globe to transform dreams into realities. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Development Institute, the United States provides the best environment for cultivating entrepreneurship, ranking first out of 138 countries. On the flip side, however, first-time business owners have only an 18 percent chance of succeeding. So how to bridge the gap between the dreamers and the triumphant? If you’re a student looking for a way to make your passion into your career, you may be glad to learn there’s a college program that can put you on the right path, while also providing you with a classic liberal arts education. The new Entrepreneurship minor course of study at Pennsylvania’s Lycoming College provides a modern approach to a liberal arts education, while preparing students to start a company of their own, to work for another entrepreneurial company or to be more entrepreneurial within a larger company. The program is headed by Marshall D. Welch III, the Sloter Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Lycoming College, who is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience advising and managing organizations, merger integration and emerging growth companies. He also approaches entrepreneurship differently from others. Welch believes that entrepreneurship, at its core, is finding and creating value, and that studying entrepreneurship as an academic discipline helps students learn to be innovative in whatever field they ultimately pursue. In less than one year, Lycoming College’s entrepreneurship classes have become a sought-after, valued addition to many students’ class schedules. The program is built on the notion that any student’s core education, regardless of academic major, can be augmented with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to take a business idea to fruition, such as innovation, digital marketing, intellectual property and financial skills. “My No. 1 objective is to create a world-class experience for students by joining the liberal arts with entrepreneurship,” said Welch. “I believe that the core knowledge of any entrepreneur is first his or her primary field of study, whether that is biology, archaeology, music or any of the other majors at Lycoming. Then add the practical knowledge and skills necessary to help our students become successful entrepreneurs or even work for entrepreneurial companies.” Firmly grounded in the liberal arts, the College has modernized its approach to higher education by offering courses that better prepare students for the 21st century. Still in its infancy, the program is already attracting well-known speakers to campus. Jay Ducote, celebrity chef and restaurateur, who has appeared on Food Network and Travel Channel, recently lectured to the College community on how he followed his passion and took risks on his road to success. “Lycoming is resolute in its mission to offer students a 21st-century education, and I believe our entrepreneurship offerings are an important part of that charge. Thinking deeply and making bold decisions to do something the world has never seen, while also staying true to your passions, accurately describes the students at this institution—a truth that also closely aligns with the principles of entrepreneurship,” said Welch. DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.
