GLUTEN-FREE IS MORE THAN A TREND

When someone with celiac disease eats gluten the body mounts an immune system response that attacks the villi, which are small fingerlike projections that line the small intestine. The villi, when damaged, cannot properly absorb nutrients from food. Untreated celiac disease also may lead to the development of other autoimmune disorders like type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

The intestinal damage from eating gluten often causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating, and anemia, and can lead to serious complications. Following a strict gluten-free diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinal healing.

More companies are producing glutenfree foods and stores are carrying them in greater numbers. In addition, there are a number of new baking flours available that provide alternatives to traditional wheat-based formulas. People with celiac disease or gluten intolerances can use these specially designed flours to make homemade items. Certain flours also may be billed as one-to-one alternatives, meaning they can be substituted for traditional flour in recipes without adjusting the measurements.

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT PTSD

Is PTSD a recent phenomenon? - PTSD has been around as long as there have been traumatic events, though its name is more recent. The APA notes that PTSD has been known by various names in the past, including “shell shock” and “combat fatigue.” These names are no longer used in part because they give the impression that post-traumatic stress is exclusive to combat veterans. That’s a misperception, as the Sidran Institute, a nonprofit organization that helps people understand and recover from PTSD, notes PTSD will affect one in 13 people in the United States and 9 percent of Canadians at some point in their lives.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Chalazions Continue to Develop in Both Eyelids

DEAR DR. ROACH: Are oral antibiotics ever prescribed to treat chalazions, in addition to eye drops and ointment? I have had two this year for seemingly no reason. They were treated with tobramycin eye drops, ointment and warm compresses. The first one didn’t resolve with those meds and was excised surgically. That eyelid then became infected without a chalazion and was treated with a second round of antibiotic drops. It remains a bit puffy and pinkish in color, which I chalked up to the new normal appearance.

Now, a chalazion has developed in the other eyelid. I don’t wear eye makeup and use an eyelid cleanser recommended by my ophthalmologist. I am an otherwise healthy 76-year-old woman. Could there be a systemic bacterial or viral infection causing chalazions to keep developing? -- M.W.

ANSWER: The terms for different types of eyelid lesions can be a bit confusing. Most people are familiar with a stye, which is a localized inflammation of the upper or lower eyelid, most commonly caused by an infection of one of the glands of the external eye, usually by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. A stye is also called a hordeolum. An external hordeolum is in the eyelash follicle or the lid margin, whereas an internal hordeolum is inflammation in the meibomian glands, the ones that secrete mucous to help keep the eyes lubricated.

Makeup can block these glands and predispose someone to hordeola. Hordeola are treated with warm compresses and sometimes by an eye specialist, with a combination of antibiotic drops and topical steroids. Drainage by an ophthalmologist is necessary if it doesn’t get better within one to two weeks. If the infection gets into the skin around the eye, it may need oral antibiotics. A chalazion is not an infection. It’s a usually painless rubbery mass in the eyelid. A chalazion can be a complication of a hordeolum, since the glands are blocked by inflammation, leading to thickened secretions from the gland. Since it’s not an infection, neither oral nor topical eye antibiotics are useful. These also usually get better with warm compresses over weeks to months. People with recurrent chalazia should be considered for biopsy, since they can turn out to be tumors in rare circumstances.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY

Hand tools and gardening tools usually can be cleaned with rags. If these tools are especially dirty, give them a wash with soap and water. Just be sure to dry the tools thoroughly after washing them. LifeHacker advises wiping down wooden handles on tools with linseed oil to keep them in good repair.

Power tools may benefit from compressed air being blown into smaller crevices to dislodge sawdust and other debris. Lubricate any moving parts with a product recommended by the manufacturer.

Keeping tools clean and in good repair goes a long way toward safer, more efficient home improvement projects.

PAW’S CORNER

Cats Can Hide Illness Symptoms, So Be Aware

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat Sisko became very una ectionate a few days ago. He hid under the bed or crouched in the corner of the living room and refused to cuddle. en I noticed when he sat in the litter box that he meowed as if he was in distress. I called the veterinarian, and they had me bring him right in. Turns out that Sisko had a urinary tract infection! He’s doing ne now, but I wanted to tell my story so that other readers will know that a sudden behavior change in their cat could be a medical problem. -- Kurt W., Parsippany, New Jersey

DEAR KURT: ank you for sharing! You did absolutely the right thing: You noticed a sudden change in your cat’s behavior, kept a closer eye on his activities and litter habits, and contacted the vet’s o ce to share your observations and get advice.

Cats are very secretive about their health. It’s an instinctive behavior that helped their ancestors hide from predators. So it is common for owners not to notice when their cat is experiencing pain, such as a sore tooth or an illness like a urinary tract infection.

While the occasional hairball episode isn’t a cause for concern, there are some symptoms that should prompt a call to the vet for an appointment.

-- Your cat acts withdrawn, sits hunched over, refuses to play or be petted.

-- Eating or drinking habits change.

-- Litter box behavior changes: meowing, missing the box or noticeable diarrhea.

-- Grooming problems develop, or they have clumpy fur or irritated skin.

-- Physical symptoms: eye or ear discharge, strange breathing, unusual vomiting, lethargy or drooling.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

RISING FROM ASHES: MATT COLANGELO OVERCOMES OBSTACLES TO REOPEN AFTER FIRE

Along with helping Colangelo nancially, Mark said he would host an event to help further. Colangelo didn’t think Mark was serious about the fundraiser idea, and a er not hearing from Mark for a month, Colangelo thought the idea was moot.

However, to Colangelo’s surprise, Mark came back around Christmas to say the Legion had set up the upcoming February spaghetti dinner/fundraiser.

In February 2020, the Wayland Laundry Services building burned to the ground, giving the laundromat’s owner Matt Colangelo a lot to think about and a lot to worry about. Now, as the three-year anniversary of the re approaches, Colangelo is nearly ready to reopen Wayland Laundry Services.

e laundromat was started in 2005 by Colangelo’s father and stepmother, who have been involved with running the laundromat most of the time since, until the 2020 re. Colangelo originally worked in the laundromat part-time, helping clean and maintain the washers and dryers.

en, everything changed in February 2020, when a regular customer came into the laundromat in the middle of the night to wash rags from his work in the area, cleaning commercial ovens as he usually did. at February night, however, while his rags were in the dryer, they caught re, which then led to the whole building burning down.

A er the insurance companies did their work, the Colangelos had to decide what to do. Colangelo’s dad, who spent winters in Arizona, came back to New York to help with the dilemma.

Colangelo’s dad and stepmom, who were considering retirement even before the re, told Colangelo he could take over the laundromat if he wanted to. Colangelo accepted without hesitation. However, he did not have enough money to rebuild the laundromat as of anksgiving 2021, so he had to gure out what to do.

Fortunately for Colangelo, one of his friends, Kevin Mark, head of the Wayland American Legion, gave him a sizable amount of money. Mark said he’s always willing to help a veteran such as Colangelo, and Mark didn’t like the idea of a local business shutting down over conditions out of their control. Mark could also relate to the damage re can cause due to a house re Mark himself had previously experienced.

Colangelo said he is in the nal stages of rebuilding the laundromat. He has nished most of the cleaning and replacing of equipment and recently nished painting. Final steps involve a code o cer inspecting the laundromat and setting an occupancy limit, and the creation of an LLC for the laundromat.

Colangelo hopes to reopen the laundromat in March, hopefully allowing him to heal the re’s wounds and start anew.

“It’s going to be a big relief getting the laundromat rebuilt,” Colangelo said. “It’s been a few years of hard work, and it’s been amazing the amount of help the Wayland community has given me during this time.”

Wayland American Legion will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser on February 11th from 2-6 p.m. at the Legion (102 N Main St, Wayland).

RAVES

Parking area negligence

It is deplorable how many public buildings do not take care of handicap parking spots. Last year I had to quit physical therapy because you could not safely get from the car to the building. Their response “the landlord is responsible for clearing the parking lot and sidewalks.” I quit. Ff they were concerned for anyones well-being, they would address it………or was that job security for them? The handicap spots at the local senior center are never clear. They should be bone dry. I realize they cannot plow or salt when there are cars in the spots, but they should instruct their drivers to clear and salt before the center opens or after it closes. It is just common sense.

Thank you Guardian Angel!

Thank you to the gentleman who was in Geneseo Noyes Urgent Care on Saturday, January 14th. I had arrived for an X-ray but there was no order on file from the doctor. The receptionist suggested I go through urgent care who would then write a script. I was worried about the cost of taking that approach. The gentleman was sitting in the waiting room and spoke up that he would pay for my urgent care visit. I was amazed someone would be willing to do that. In the meantime, they were able to get ahold of my doctor and get the script. Regardless, I won’t forget the kindness a stranger was willing to give to me.

Purple Pony

I would just like to say thank you to The Genesee Valley Penny Saver for printing the wonderful article on Purple Pony. I had no idea they even existed. Horses are truly amazing, and to help with special needs of all ages tells a lot about these magnificent animals. Thank you, Purple Pony!

Response to "garbage plate modification"

I suppose it's none of my business how one modifies a garbage plate. While the modification of adding fish sticks to a plate with hot dogs and all the fixings is nothing short of, in my personal opinion, disgusting, I am more disturbed that someone is eating this every single day. Perhaps slowly adding in other lunches like salads and low-fat sandwiches would be beneficial to this person. As a medical professional, I see far too many people with garbage plate-related maladies in the greater Rochester area.

SENIOR NEWS

... It’s Still Here

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of Covid cases has steadily risen since December. Earlier in the fall, Covid took a short break while the u and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) made it to center stage. ose illnesses are now waning a bit, and here comes Covid again.

It doesn’t help that we have a new variant -- an o shoot of Omicron, the XBB.1.5 -- taking o around the country. By Christmas nearly half the cases of Covid were that new variant, so it’s growing.

Seniors, as usual, are being hit hard with those in the age 70+ range being the largest group a ected, followed by ages 60-69.

If you’re hesitant to go back to being extremely careful, we’re experiencing what some doctors are calling the Senior Wave. It means the numbers on a graph show that the largest group a ected with hospitalizations are seniors.

Which means it’s still not time to let down our guard. If anything, it means renewing our e orts to stay safe. Frequent handwashing, wearing a mask in the store, even if you’re the only one who is, staying out of large groups ... we know how to do this.

And like it or not, we should. e growing number of seniors being hospitalized or dying due to Covid should shake up all of us.

Another, and possibly even more accurate, statistic for the spread of Covid is the wastewater. is is where municipalities test the sewage for Covid. People can hide their exposure and illness by using the at-home tests we all received in the mail, thereby skewing the “o cial” numbers, but the sewage in an area is sure to be more accurate.

To see the wastewater data by county, go online to CDC.gov and search for “National Wastewater Surveillance System” (NWSS).

NOTICE

TO ALL VILLAGE OF GENESEO PROPERTY OWNERS/RESIDENTS/ BUSINESS OWNERS

– INJURY

PLEASE KEEP THE SIDEWALKS CLEAR OF ICE & SNOW

According to Village Code Section 105-6, no owner, occupant, tenant or other person owning or occupying any lot or premises in the Village, shall permit any snow, ice or other substance to collect or remain on any sidewalk. The Village of Geneseo plows sidewalks as a courtesy, however some accumulation still remains. The ultimate responsibility and liability for ice and snow accumulation belongs to the property owner or occupant. Please keep our sidewalks clear for our many pedestrians.

SNOW REMOVAL AND YOUR MAILBOX

During significant snowstorms, the Village of Geneseo Department of Public Works, in the course of plowing, may cause occasional damage to mailboxes, either from snowplows directly or from the force of snow being thrown by the plows. If such damage is indeed caused by snow removal, it is not done intentionally, but is an unfortunate consequence of snow removal. As far as the particular agencies replacing damaged mailboxes, it must be pointed out that there is NO statutory or legal authority, which grants a property owner/resident/business owner along a public highway any right to place a mailbox in a highway right-of-way. If a mailbox is within a village, town, county, or state right-of-way it is a courtesy to the postal service. From past experience, we have found that plastic mailboxes and/or posts do not withstand the abuse of snow from the plows hitting them; therefore they are not recommended. It is the responsibility of the resident to repair or replace the mailbox.

SNOW REMOVAL AROUND FIRE HYDRANTS

Please dig out fire hydrants after heavy snowfalls throughout the winter. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

DID YOU KNOW?

Firms on the lookout for ways to manage employees’ time more efficiently may want to reconsider their approach to meetings. A recent study on meetings commissioned by Verizon Conferencing found that an overwhelming majority of professionals who are considered heavy meeting-goers admitted to an array of behaviors that suggest meetings aren’t as productive as employers may believe. Ninety-six percent of respondents admitted to having missed meetings in the past, while 91 percent acknowledged daydreaming during meetings. In addition, 73 percent of respondents did other work during a meeting, while 39 percent acknowledged falling asleep.

THE RIGHT WAY TO LEAVE A JOB

Don’t shirk responsibilities. It can be tempting to slack off when another job awaits. The popular job-hunting site Monster.com says it can be human nature to do less when long-term accountability is removed. However, you never know when you might need a referral or even a new job. Leaving a bitter taste in the mouth of your employer at the end of your work history can put a black mark on your employee record.

Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. NOW HERE’S A TIP

* Toothpaste works well as a silver polish. Wet your silver, plop a little non-gel toothpaste on it and rub gently to clean. Rinse well and let it shine.

* A great hint from Mary R. of Duluth, Georgia: If the kids are drawing with felt markers and their hands get covered with ink, don’t worry. Just spray their hands down with hairspray, then wipe off the ink with a paper towel. Don’t forget to wash their hands afterward!

* Dip your toothbrush in baking soda before you add toothpaste when brushing your teeth. You get used to the taste, but the extra scrub really gets your teeth clean, and it’s very inexpensive to use. -- R.E. in Arizona

* Have clumped-up sugar in the canister? No worries. To keep sugar from hardening, add a slice of bread to the container from time to time, and leave it there a day before removing.

* Use this quick fix for oily hair. Rub a small amount of cornstarch into the oily areas of your hair. The cornstarch will soak up the dirt and oil; you just brush it out.

* A reader from Michigan wonders: How can I keep from having static head, especially when using a hat? The answer: You probably already have a tube of lip balm in your pocket or purse. Rub some on your palms, then run your palms over your hair.
