USING LEFTOVER HALLOW EEN CANDY
HOW TO RAKE LEAVES M ORE EFFICIENTLY
Hard candies can be used to add some flavor to adult beverages. Let the candy sit in the alcohol for a few hours and the candy w ill dissolve. Use a coffee filter to strain out any candy remnants.
Wait for the majority of leaves to drop before beginning your w ork. If you start too early in the season, you may end up raking multiple times and that is not time-efficient.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Reducing Eye Strain --DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you mind providing some guidelines for preventing eye strain? I’m a graduate student, so I spend a lot of time reading, both from computer screens and from books. I will always need to read to get things done, but I’d also like my eyes to last me my whole life. -- B.I. ANSWER: We tend to spend a lot of time reading or in front of computer screens, and eye strain is very common. I think eye problems from excess screen time and reading fall into two categories: dry eyes and muscle strain. Computer users in particular can get dry eyes, largely from decreased blinking. Unfortunately, “blink more” isn’t likely to be successful advice, so I recommend an eye lubricant, used periodically during computer work if you have any sense of eye fatigue or strain. If dry eyes are part of your problem, you will feel relief immediately, and you should use a drop in each eye every few hours. Muscle strain comes from staring at one point of focus -- your computer screen -- for long periods of time. Also, many people tend to hold their shoulders and neck in an uncomfortable position during computer work or play. The solution is to get away from the computer for a while. I recommend getting up and pacing periodically, since prolonged sitting isn’t good for you. Another option is the 20-20-20 rule (I haven’t been able to discover who made the rule, but I think it makes sense): Look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. This can help prevent fatigue to the ciliary muscles, the muscles of the eye. Some people, especially those who are nearing or past their 50th birthday, might benefit from very mild reading glasses when using the computer. There is a science behind adjusting your workspace, lighting and monitor settings to reduce strain. There are apps to remind you to take breaks periodically and to change the color of your computer to make it easier on the eyes.

Delivering The Freedom Of Choice NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES Rinse off pollen. Use a mild cleanser to rinse the eyelids and eyelashes of pollen, as this is where it tends to congregate after being outdoors. Use saline spray to clear nasal passages of excess pollen as well.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had nail fungus since 1985 in both my toenails and my fingernails. I was treated with oral Lamisil, but it did nothing for my big toe. I have been treated by skin and foot specialists, but the problem has continued progressively over the years. I am 80 years old, and it’s still there. Is there really any hope for cases like mine? -- C.J.R. ANSWER: Are you sure you really want the condition treated? The treatments have potential for real harm, even though it isn’t likely. If the issue is strictly cosmetic, I wouldn’t recommend treatment. If it’s for pain or because you have had skin or soft tissue infections in the area, then treatment is reasonable. If you pursue treatment, get a culture done to be sure you know what you are treating. Sometimes what looks like a nail infection is really something else (psoriasis, eczema, lichen planus or others). Depending on what the culture shows, you might benefit from itraconazole, an oral antifungal agent. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A colleague might offer to open a door for you professionally. Be sure to use that other Taurean trait, your practicality, when discussing what the job offers. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A changing situation might require some adjustments you might not have been prepared to make. However, flexibility in this matter could be the best course to follow at this time. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) You’re in a period of fluctuating moods, which is not unusual for the Moon Child. Your emotions stabilize by the 26th. Meanwhile, try to hold off making major decisions until then. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) That keen sense of perception helps you hunt down those minute details that others overlook. And, of course, your Leonine ego will accept the expected praise with good grace. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Be careful not to be confrontational when raising a work-related issue. Better to make a request than a demand. And, of course, be prepared to back up your case with facts. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your ego might be hurt when a colleague turns down your offer to help. But accept it as a rejection of your offer, not of you. A friend from the past could re-emerge by week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A flow of positive energy turns a work project you didn’t want to do into something you actually love doing. Now, take that attitude into your social, intimate life -- and enjoy what follows. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Working hard to meet your professional goals is fine. But don’t neglect your private life, especially where it concerns your more cherished relationships. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) “Patience” remains the key word in dealing with an emotionally sensitive situation involving a close friend or family member. Help comes your way by week’s end. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) With new information coming in, it’s a good time to rethink some of your goals without taking suggestions from others, no matter how wellmeaning they might be. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Making progress on your project is relatively easy in the early part of the week. A problem could arise midweek. But all goes swimmingly once it’s resolved. BORN THIS WEEK: Holding fast to your principles, no matter what, inspires others to follow your example. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce.

Homemade Desserts Webster Crossing United Methodist Church 7230 Route 15 Webster Crossing Rd., Springwater, NY DID YOU KNOW? Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

WAYS TO INCREASE PRODUCTIVITY AT WORK
RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB
Change your hours. When possible, explore flex time with your employer. Getting to work before everyone, or coming in later and staying after traditional hours can lead to greater productivity. There will be fewer distractions and less rush-hour traffic, and you can reap a greater sense of accomplishment. Consider working a weekend day and taking off during the week. Then you’ll have the added benefit of getting personal tasks done while others are at work.
Ask what relocation packages cover. Relocation packages vary from company to company. The Allied Survey found that 54 percent of companies that offered such packages covered moving expenses, while 21 percent gave new hires a lump sum of money to use as they deemed necessary. One in five companies even sponsored trips to search for homes. Adults who are offered relocation packages should get the specifics so they can start creating moving budgets.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

How far you go in life depends on your being tender w ith the young, compassionate w ith the aged, sympathetic w ith the striving and tolerant of the w eak and strong. Because someday in your life you w ill have been all of these. - George Washington Carver
THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning protects families faced with sudden death. Few people want to think about their deaths, and fewer still want to think about dying suddenly and/or dying young. Preplanning a funeral and setting money aside early can protect and help families faced with sudden deaths. That can be especially important for young parents, who won’t want to leave their spouses and children financially destitute should they suddenly pass away.

“More people are flattered into virtue than are bullied out of vice....” ~ Robert Smith Surtees It is probably true that very few saintly people got that way entirely as a matter of their own choice. They wanted the approval of their peers (don’t we all?) and so they conducted their lives in a way such as to win approval. They were “flattered” into virtue.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Richmond Fire Dept. and Ambulance Fund, PO Box 469, Honeoye, NY 14471.
On the other hand, few people have ever been persuaded to give up bad habits by threats..... “bullied” out of vice. The moral here, if one may be drawn, is that most of us do what is expected of us. We can best inspire others by having high expectations.

Every adult, who might some day be required to make funeral arrangements, should be fully informed before the need arises. We are here to answer your questions and to offer advice, without obligation.
Life insurance is a product few people want to think about. That’s perfectly understandable, as life insurance forces men and women to consider their own mortality. But life insurance is not something adults should avoid, especially if they have dependents. Many people should consider life insurance when estate planning so they can provide security for their loved ones.

CONVEYANCE OF CHOICE Down through history, the “hearse” (also known as a “funeral coach”) has evolved from a simple carrying device known as a “bier” to 19th-century wooden hearses with intricately cut mahogany carvings and velvet draperies to the motorized vehicles that we know today. While hearses such as landaus, limousines, and vans still predominate the hearse landscape, many individuals are choosing other types of vehicles as their conveyance of choice. Some prefer vehicles that they had driven during their professional lives for their final journeys, while others favor their dream car, truck, or other vehicle. These alternatives to the traditional black hearse are meant to personalize the funeral procession in a way that most appropriately expresses the inner spirit of the deceased. Today, end-of-life commemorative services range from the traditional funeral, to a memorial service, and the increasingly popular celebrations-of-life. If you have yet to realize the immense value of such a collective acknowledgement of loss, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. We invite you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “I never saw a U-Haul behind a hearse.” Billy Graham

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Read more. Avid readers may be happy to learn that one of their favorite pastimes can improve the efficiency of their cognitive systems while delaying such systems’ decline. A 2013 study published in the journal Neurology by researchers at Chicago’s Rush University Medical Center found that mentally active lifestyles may not prevent the formations of plaques and tangles associated with Alzheimer’s disease, but such lifestyles decreases the likelihood that the presence of plaques or tangles will impair cognitive function.

Another way to give back is to help your elderly neighbors who may not be as independent as they once were. Such men and women may have physical limitations that compromise their ability to perform everyday tasks. People in the prime of their life take their ability to perform such tasks for granted. While these gestures might seem simple, helping your elderly neighbors with their everyday tasks can have a profound impact on their lives. • Ask if a neighbor needs anything from the grocery store. Everyone forgets to buy something at the grocery store from time to time. That’s a minor inconvenience to most people, but it can have a much bigger impact on elderly people who have mobility issues. Before taking trips to the grocery store, make it a habit to call an elderly neighbor and ask if he or she needs anything. • Invite seniors over for dinner or other gatherings. Many seniors deal with social isolation, which occurs when they lack opportunities to interact with other people. Recent data from the Administration on Aging indicates that 35 percent of women over the age of 65 were widows and almost half of women 75 and older live alone. Inviting elderly neighbors who live alone over for dinners, movie nights or game watches once per week is a great way to help them avoid social isolation and give them something to look forward to.
simple tasks like mowing the lawn, taking out the garbage and even vacuuming can be difficult for seniors with physical limitations. Pitching in to help with such chores once or twice a week won’t require much time on your part and can have a significant impact on the lives of your aging neighbors. • Drive seniors to religious services. Attending religious services is important to many seniors, but those who can no longer drive themselves to weekly services may not be attending them as much as they would like. Whether you attend such services or not, offer to drive an elderly neighbor on Sunday mornings (or whenever weekly services are held). Religious services can help seniors stay connected to their faith and their communities, and driving an elderly neighbor to and from houses of worship once per week won’t require a significant commitment of your time.
Helping your elderly neighbors is a great and often simple way • Help with some weekly chores. Seniors living on fixed incomes may find it difficult to maintain their homes. Relatively to give back to your community.
Chicken ow ners can use fallen leaves as bedding in their chicken coops. Dry leaves also may create more comfortable and drier conditions for goats and other livestock. Goats may look to recently fallen leaves as a nutritious food source. Gather the leaves and let the goats munch before you further rake and compost the leaves.
Cool autumn w eather and less sunlight are signals to certain trees that it is time to shed their leaves. A leafless tree is more capable of conserving energy and riding out the w inter successfully. Trees also shed their leaves during periods of drought or if they have produced too many leaves in the summer and need to conserve w ater.

Byron-Bergen Schools Embody “Farm To School” Story Submitted by: Gretchen Spittler October is National Farm to School Month. Since its Congressional dedication in 2010, schools are encouraged to collaborate with local farmers to bring fresh, local produce into school cafeterias throughout October. However, School Cafeteria Lunch Manager Mary Dellapenna does not wait for October. For the past five years, she has been out in the community working with farms to source fresh, local ingredients. Fresh fruit is on the menu every day at ByronBergen schools and, if a student chooses an apple, it likely came from Roanoke Apple Farm. The familyowned and operated farm is located twelve miles from the school. The proprietor, Linda Williams, delivers the handpicked fruit directly to the school. “It’s all about the community,” said Williams. “Even though this is an agricultural community, a lot of the kids don’t know where their food comes from or how it gets there. I like knowing that we help them eat fresh and clean.” It’s not just the apples that have a quick commute to the school. Dellapenna also locally sources green beans, cucumbers, cabbage, onions, and squash from Torrey Farms in Elba. Torrey Farms has been family owned and operated for twelve generations with seasonal employees with forty years of experience with the company. While Torrey Farms generally sells to stores and wholesale distributors, they make an extra effort when it comes to schools. “We are here for the schools who want to make it work,” said sales team member Shannon Kyle. “It can be a logistical challenge, but we are willing to go above and beyond for Mary (Dellapenna).” However, getting the food to the school is only the first challenge. Dellapenna and her team must choose recipes that the students will enjoy. “The fresh produce goes over very well with the students who regularly choose it over processed food,” said Byron-Bergen Jr./Sr. High School Cook and Manager Rozanne Klycek. “The local apples and cucumber wheels are definite favorites.” Much of the local produce requires preparation. Unlike canned green beans, fresh green beans are washed, snipped, and cooked in the school kitchens

and Dellapenna must keep an eye on labor hours. However, Klycek and her staff understand the importance of bringing the students fresh food. “The health benefit of locally grown produce is that it is ‘fresh,’ meaning there are no preservatives or additives like salt or sugar,” Klycek adds. “Also, the vitamins in fresh produce are at their optimal nutritional value as compared to canned fruits and vegetables.” As the local growing season ends, Dellapenna will need to rely more on preserved and imported produce for the schools. However, come spring, she will be back out on the farms seeking out the best local produce for the Byron-Bergen students.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS
USING LEFTOVER HALLOW EEN CANDY
Avocados may help fight depression. Avocados are loaded with omega-3 fatty acids, which benefit the body in myriad ways. One of those ways is by helping to reduce the symptoms of depression. Polyunsaturated fats such as omega-3 fatty acids are thought to antagonize inflammatory cytokines that can contribute to feelings of depression.

We recently had our 60th Wedding Anniversary, but celebrated on a summer day in July with a "Picnic/Jam" in our backyard. We are so pleased and thankful for all who came and played music or brought a dish to share. The Piper marched, and the band played on! We are truly blessed and appreciate all of you. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Bill and Hilda Santee
There is a person who walks the [local trail] every day between the [local road] and the [local road]. Waking at times can be very boring. The trail however, has many trees. Then up came the idea. Being a bird lover, the Walker began to buy, paint and affix little bird houses to the trail trees here and there. Those who walked the trail each day commented on the joy of looking each day, to try and find the new ones which had been put up. There was a golf shop, a lighthouse, a bait shop and others. Then one day the Walker began to notice some of the bird houses were disappearing. First 3 were gone. Why would anyone steal a bird house? Surely many stores sell bird houses. After those 3 were stolen the Walker bought more and painted them and put them up. Then 4 more

disappeared having been ripped from the trees, and that was the last straw. All 24 bird houses spread out all over the area, were taken down and given to people who will love them, and do...END OF STORY. Except...one would remind the thief of the 8th commandment...THOU SHALL NOT STEAL. Just a reminder to be kind to those working in the retail jobs this summer. We have a bunch of first time workers out there trying to gain experience and make some college money. No need to be nasty. My 16 year old started her first job at a family fun venue and comes home every shift with a story of an adult who was rude and nasty to her. Remember these employees do not make the rules or prices of the establishment. If you are that upset over the extra twenty cents for a cone upgrade, you need to see a manager not swear at and belittle the kid behind the counter. They are there standing in the heat, cold or rain for minimum pay trying their best and learning as they go. It's funny because she never makes comments about the
events for thinking about your younger guests. My children and I have been to several such events recently, and everywhere we go, there are activities for the children, goodies, small prizes, face-painting, bounce houses, petting zoos, even carnival rides free-of-charge. It isn’t always easy for families to afford to give their children a family fun day, but these festivals make it much easier by keeping their snacks and
behavior of the children enjoying the place, just the parents. When are people going to learn to hold their cell and or "smart" phones in the proper position when they're recording something? If you don't know what you’re doing w/ your phone, take some necessary time to figure out how your phone really works or ask a friend. This problem has been happening for quite some time. Let’s get with it people; if it's worth recording it's worth recording properly. Let's hurry up and get rid of the history we all learned about so the next generation has no history class. Then we can say slavery never happened. While we're at it lets go further back and say the Indians were not here first. Then we can put those lands back on the tax rolls and they can start paying taxes also. Maybe the Boston Tea Party didn't happen either. It amazes me how many people can on a daily basis violate the speed limit in [local town]. The main street is 35 MPH and at times the road seems like a raceway. What happened to speed limit
activities for kids low cost or free. Thank you for your kindhearted generosity!
enforcement? Cars, trucks, motorcycles all seem to disregard speed limit signs!! I would like to see more speed enforcement for this residential neighborhood for the safety of all who live here!! Stop Eating Without Paying! To those who take and eat food in grocery stores, please stop. It's disgusting. Not to mention stealing. You know who you are, especially in produce, bulk foods, and prepared foods. What ever happened to the law that says 'innocent until proven guilty?'? It seems the only way justice works is 'trial by media,' which is wrong and also depends on who is footing the bill to whether justice is served or not. We all know who they are... This summer a private citizen beautified a local trail by putting up many hand assembled and painted birdhouses. Almost immediately, someone saw it their duty to remove, steal and destroy many of them. This seems to be an act of meanness and difficult to understand. Why do some people need to act to destroy a donation meant to increase the enjoyment of the trail for all its users?!

It was, as I have said, a fine autumnal day; the sky was clear and serene, and nature wore that rich and golden livery which we always associate with the idea of abundance. The forests had put on their sober brown and yellow, while some trees of the tenderer kind had been nipped by the frosts into brilliant dyes of orange, purple, and scarlet.... As Ichabod jogged slowly on his way, his eye... ranged with delight over the treasures of jolly autumn. ~Washington Irving, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”
