PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Ticks Plague This Playful Bulldog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I don’t get it. My bulldog “Chester” was out in the yard with me on a cool morning while I raked the first leaves of fall. When he came in, he had four ticks around his neck! They were hungry, too. I pulled the ticks off, but every time he goes outside now, he has one or more ticks burrowing into his fur. I thought cool weather causes ticks and fleas to die off. What’s happening? -- Burt G., Manchester, Vermont

AVOIDING CANCER RISK FACTORS MAY HELP PREVENT CERTAIN CANCERS. Risk factors include smoking, being overweight, and not getting enough exercise. Increasing protective factors such as quitting smoking and exercising may also help prevent some cancers. STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Sigurd the Mighty, a ninth-century Norse earl of Orkney, was killed by an enemy he had beheaded several hours earlier. He’d tied the man’s head to his horse’s saddle, but while riding home one of its protruding teeth grazed his leg, causing an infection from which the unlucky Sigurd died.

DEAR BURT: Believe it or not, tick (and flea) activity can increase in early fall. Temperatures are still warm enough for these pests to thrive, especially under fallen leaves and in high grass. And they’re always hungry, so they’ll latch onto a warm body as soon as they get the opportunity. You’re doing exactly the right thing to combat ticks. As soon as Chester comes inside, you’re checking his coat for ticks and removing them as soon as you see them. And you’re raking the leaves in the yard regularly so that they don’t build up. Here’s a few more things you can do that may reduce the number of ticks in your yard: -- Keep the grass mowed right up until the first hard frost. -- Cut back tall grasses and underbrush on your property. -- Move woodpiles away from the house. -- Don’t let Chester roll in the leaf piles, and block his access to untamed areas of brush or tall grasses. -- Use a flea-and-tick- prevention collar or treatment on Chester. Talk to his veterinarian about the best product to use. -- If heavy tick infestation doesn’t abate, consider treating your yard with a flea-and-tick spray made for this purpose. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Give tires the eye test. The eye test can be an effective and quick w ay to detect tire damage. Uneve n w ear may be indicative of insufficient tire pressure or an alignment problem. Uneven w ear also may indicate t he vehicle is experiencing problems w ith its steering or suspension. But many times uneven w ear can be remedied by a simple tire rotation, so take your vehicle to your mechanic if you notice uneven w ear.

The doll raised major concerns over privacy, however, since the discussions between it and child owners were recorded and sent to thirdparty vendors. Goodbye, Barbie!

In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

That statement may not seem right to those who think of the spring as the peak time to care for lawns and gardens. However, autumn is an ideal time to get into the garden and ensure that flowers, trees and garden beds will over-winter successfully. A number of things make autumn a prime gardening season. The cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat. In addition, soil harbors a lot of residual warmth in autumn. Also, the colder temperatures haven’t yet arrived in autumn, nor have the leaves completely fallen, making fall a prime time to assess what’s already in the landscape, what needs pruning back and where to address planting for next year.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Do We Really Need a Booster Shot?

Depending on when we went for the COVID vaccine, we could be eligible for the booster now ... or not. Elderly seniors, as well as those in nursing homes and the immunocompromised, were first in line early in the year. The rest of us straggled in over the next several months. At this point, it’s unknown whether there should be a six- or eight-month wait before the booster. The Pfizer booster (called Comirnaty) is now available to those 65 and older and some others depending on risk and medical conditions. At this writing, Moderna is asking for authorization, and there is no booster yet for the J&J vaccine. Do we actually need a booster? We’re all wondering (my pharmacist says half of their calls are about boosters), and the answers are a mixed bag. A pulmonary physician at a major university hospital said if we’re under 65 and relatively healthy, no, we don’t need one. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services says that the vaccines we already received will start to wear off, so yes, we should get the booster, starting with seniors and nursing-home residents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is calling for booster shots only for the immunocompromised, but not others. The World Health Organization is calling for a moratorium on shots until poor countries get theirs. While we wait for real answers, keep your vaccine record card where you can find it. You’ll need it, should you decide to get a booster. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Update window treatments to compensate for dropping temperatures. Trade your sheers for sturdy, draft-blocking panels. * To easily get keys on a keychain, use a staple remover to create an opening to slip the keys on. It is very effective and will keep you from getting frustrated. * When hammering a nail, try this save-your-finger trick: Use a clothespin to hold the nail steady, and then use your hammer to drive it in. Hammering into the wall? Push the nail through a strip of cardboard, and then hold the cardboard over the right spot. No more banged-up fingers or thumbs! * “At a party, someone spilled a cup of red wine on one of my throw pillows. I love the pillow, since it is just the right size and really soft, but I could not get the stain out. So I covered it with a new fabric. I ended up doing all the assorted pillows in the same fabric, and it made a big change in the room. I wish I had done it sooner.” -- I.F. in Pennsylvania * Bringing some plants indoors? Use styrofoam packing peanuts in the bottom of pots when planting. They aren’t as heavy as rocks, but they do just as good a job. It makes the pots easier to move around should you need to. * “For easy-cleanup pancakes, use a turkey baster to ‘squirt’ the batter in the griddle or skillet. No drips, and it usually results in a pretty good circle, too!” -- A.J. in Florida

WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

sigmoid colectomy. Since then, I have had no recurrence of diverticulitis. The surgeon recommended that I not use laxatives, but rather take fiber gummies to keep things moving easily in addition to drinking lots of fluids. I am doing that, but my flatulence could power all the homes in a small city. It is difficult to control outbursts, which are noxious and embarrassing in the extreme. Is there any other way to avoid hard stools, straining and other unhealthy gastrointestinal situations? -- J.S. ANSWER: I am sorry for your embarrassment, but I agree with the surgeon that getting fiber and plenty of water is the safest and best way to prevent problems. However, maybe it isn’t just the fiber, but your diet that is at least partially responsible for the increased gas. You could try reducing your intake of foods in the cabbage family, onions, beans, corn and other gas-producers. Avoid carbonated beverages and any beverage containing artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol or xylitol. In some people, changing the bacteria that live in your gut (your microbiome) through probiotic supplements and a change of diet can reduce the amount of gas produced. There are other types of fiber supplements besides fiber gummies that might be better tolerated, or you can get fiber from food.

Zero, not here untrue You need to get your facts straight! Even if you are vaccinated, you can still carry and transmit Covid! You can still get Covid!! And yes, I’m vaccinated by my choice! I was recently in the ER. The nurse that took care of me was overworked, wonderful, and caring and had had Covid twice. What better immunity than your own body’s? It’s much better than any shot made by mankind. The problem is this virus keeps mutating, and no vaccine is going to keep you 100% safe from it. I’m a retired nurse, and I do understand what this means. So, it should remain a choice, not a mandate. Health care professionals continue to use PPE. You will not be cared for by anyone who is unprotected. Know what you are talking about before you attack an already taxed system. Also, if you are out in public, how do you know the person standing next to you is vaccinated?

S E V A R Yes, kindness matters I have experienced something similar while at a local park with my two granddaughters, ages 7 and 3. They wanted only to make new friends but were ignored and laughed at. It broke my heart when they cried, but I couldn’t blame the children involved. They’re only children. Rest assured, your granddaughter will make good friends at school and completely forget about this unfortunate incident. Still, I know it’s something that will tug at our heart strings for some time.

Give a poor man a bone Thanks to the kind lady with a dog named Tucker who gave me a ride home when my bike got a flat. Those two miles would have gotten the best of me.

Great customer service I’ve been to a lot of landscaping and garden centers, but Wayside in Macedon was by far the most helpful for a first-time gardener like myself. Jen was extremely knowledgeable but not at all overwhelming. I’m very excited to see my gardens in the springtime! Thanks again!

No profanity I fully support any citizen’s right to put a sign supporting their candidate of choice on their lawn or house, or to fly a flag showing what side of the political fence they sit. I don’t care who those signs support. Each one represents your personal opinion; it’s encouraging to see so many taking part in the democratic process. Few signs however have no place in public view in our town. One in particular does not support but rather denigrates an elected leader by means of the most obnoxious 4-letter word. Do you not realize that children may walk by on their way to school or the bus? Or out-of-towners who may drive by and think “what kind of community is this?” What about the public’s right to enjoy their town without being verbally insulted? So to residents who feel it necessary to display their opinions in such vulgar terms, I politely ask you to take them down. Show that you care more about healing our community than dividing it. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Hero to zero? You have no right to judge anyone. There is a wide variety of reasons for refusing the [vaccine],and none of them are your business! You aren’t questioning why the healthcare professionals are refusing this? [Stay home!] I sure hope you or a loved one wont need any of those “zeroes “ you mention because the worst healthcare crisis in any of our lifetimes is headed our way.

Pay it forward Thank you to the kind person who bought our coffee at the drive thru last week. Little acts like these make someone’s day!

EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE (NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities.

Puzzle Answers This Week

Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify. Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits.

AMUSEMENT RIDES

Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment. For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working. “It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.” It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.” Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts. “I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.” To learn more, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 or 1-866-833-2967 (TTY). Or visit www.choosework.ssa.gov. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

any people have a soft spot for animals. However, it takes a uniquely compassionate person to go that extra mile to not only rescue animals, but also to rehabilitate them, as well. That is exactly what Rebecca Zielinski and her friend Ashley Mcneill did when they launched ABC Rehab, a licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility in Hemlock. Rebecca Zielinski has spent most of her life helping animals, inspired by her mother who volunteered at a cat rescue. “I have loved animals ever since I was 4-years-old,” said Zielinski. “As a toddler, I was already saving little critters!” As an adult, Zielinski opened a cat rescue of her own, but she wanted to go further. “People would reach out to me about injured wildlife, and I didn’t know what to do to help them,” she explained. “I wanted to expand on what we were doing to rescue wildlife, as well.” A chipmunk enjoys a tasty snack at ABC Rehab!

At first, Zielinski didn’t know where to start, but conversations with wildlife rehabber friends soon pointed her in the right direction: a DEC exam. Prospective wildlife rehabilitators must register for this exam on the DEC website. As one would imagine, there is a lot to learn, but Zielinski had an edge. “Luckily, I already knew a lot of the basics that many other new rehabbers have to learn about things like supportive care, feeding, and wound care from rescuing cats and kittens,” she noted. “However, I did have to learn a lot of species-specific information regarding things like feeding and formula blends.” Passing the exam is only the beginning. “If you pass, the DEC sends you a link for your application which you send to Albany for special licensing,” explained Zielinski. “Then, you set up an interview with a DEC officer.” A DEC officer interviews each prospect and examines their rehabilitation facilities. “There are requirements your facility must meet,” Zielinski said. “It cannot be near domesticated animals. It must be in a separate, safe area with sufficient space. It must maintain a constant temperature and have proper cages. It also must have proper lighting with light and dark cycles to mimic the outdoors because we release rehabilitated wildlife back into the wild whenever possible.” In the spring of this year, ABC Rehab opened its doors for the first time. “Early spring is when the babies start coming,” Zielinski said. “Baby squirrels fall out of trees. Baby rabbits run from lawnmowers and animal attacks. When the weather warms up, baby birds fall out of nests. We have helped opossums, squirrels, nonmigratory birds, chipmunks, bunnies, and more.” While Zelinksi had always received cries for help, their volume definitely increased. “I used to get a tag [on social media] here and there; now I get tags every day,” she said. “People continue to reach

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

out to us, and the DEC and area veterinarians have the numbers of licensed rehabbers, so they call to transfer animals for care, as well.” To Ashley Mcneill, the need speaks volumes. “At first, I got into wildlife rehabilitation by association with Becky,” she recalled. “Then, I realized there just aren’t enough people who are doing this. We have really needed as much help as we could get. There are so many animals in need...we could not say no to them.” Saying yes comes with a cost. “A lot of our funds come out of our own pockets,” Zielinski stated matter-of-factly. “We are not paid nor supported by grants or government funding, so we rely on the community for help. Being licensed, we can ask for and accept donations, and when we post, people have been very generous.” Rehabilitation can become costly, especially with “late babies,” which reach maturity too close to winter and must be cared for until the warmer part of spring before being released. “We currently have about eight red squirrel babies here to stay with us this winter,” she said. “They are in little tree huts which mimic where they would be. We are careful not to handle them so that they do not get used to people.” Their efforts have not gone unappreciated. “A lot of people were excited when we opened,” said Zielinksi. “We received a lot of positive response to our posts, and those who find these injured animals are so appreciative of what we do. It is very rewarding.” In the future, Zielinski and Mcneill hope to expand ABC Rehab to include a larger outdoor facility which would allow them to also rehabilitate larger animals like foxes. Meanwhile, they encourage those who would like to help to donate to a wildlife rehabilitator near them. Wildlife rehabilitators are listed by the DEC at www.dec.ny.gov/ animals/83977. “Supplies as simple as blankets, towels, and produce are very helpful,” Zielinksi encouraged. “Every animal deserves a chance, even if it is just a little mouse.”

Rebecca Zielinski (l) and Ashley Mcneill (r) have already helped many animals in need since opening ABC Rehab last spring!

Joseph A. Lamendola “Joe”

“Apologies are seldom of any use…≥” ~ Samuel Johnson Considerate people are often aware that something they may have done or said might have been offensive to somebody. Even though the incident was unintentional, as is usually the case, there is a natural tendency to explain…to apologize and make things right. When we apologize to a friend, they are already aware that our intentions were good. They need no apology. And, our enemies will not usually be placated by apology. A simple “I’m sorry” is as much apology as is ever needed, if there is any need at all. Our staff is always available to assist, whether with advice and counsel on pre-planning or with making arrangements at time of need. Feel free to call us at any hour.

September 28, 2021 Marina del Ray, CA/Livonia, NY: September 28, 2021 at age 36. He was predeceased by his paternal grandfather, Joseph Lamendola and maternal grandfather, Frederick Mertz. END OF LIFE EXPECTATIONS “End-of-life” is defined as that time period when health care providers expect death to occur within about six months. During this time, it is well documented that older patients with terminal illness generally prefer their lives to end in a “good death” that avoids burdensome pain and heroic life-saving technology. At the same time, they fear that their pain, symptoms, anxiety, emotional suffering, and family concerns will be ignored and that their advance directives will be disregarded. To avoid such unnecessary worry that they will face death alone and in misery, it is critical that the immediate family take it upon themselves to advocate for their dying family member. A frank discussion is both expected and needed. When a loved one dies or death is expected to take place soon, there are many details to take care of. This can be a stressful time. Funeral directors handle the many details that go into caring for someone who is deceased. They also make all the arrangements for the funeral and memorial services. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME can help you plan a fitting memorial service with or without the cremation urn present, at our facility or in a place of your choosing. To learn about our services, please call (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. THE PAST IS WHERE IT’S AT!

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Quitting a job can be full of mixed emotions. Just be sure to time it correctly and leave in as positive a way as possible to maintain a strong professional network.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Recognize your strengths. Today’s professionals are less likely than their predecessors to stick with one company or line of work for their entire working lives. But just because you change jobs or career paths does not mean your past experience is useless. Successful women know what they do best, whether it’s public speaking, writing or making sales pitches. Apply those strengths when looking for a new job or career.

Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Highlight what you have done. Rather than listing every job responsibility and position in chronological order, use a résumé to highlight specific career accomplishments. This is a time to be your biggest fan and tell the world all of the great things you have accomplished. Remember to include evidence to back up the claims. According to a 2015 survey by CareerBuilder, employers say that résumés that include links to a candidate’s portfolio, website or blog garner more attention than résumés without such links.

AVOID FINANCIAL PERIL AFTER A JOB LOSS Losing a job can be devastating. Even in a strong market, companies can go out of business or reduce payroll. Being let go can initially tug at one’s pride, and after a layoff sets in, it may cause individuals to start worrying for their financial futures. While many people can survive and may even enjoy a few weeks of rest and relaxation after a job loss, financial concerns may surface soon thereafter. A 2017 GOBankingRates survey found that more than half of American adults have less than $1,000 in their savings accounts. Financial planners typically advise people to have at least three month’s worth of earnings socked away for emergency situations, like a medical issue or a job loss. Even though the survey also found more than a quarter (27 percent) of respondents have $10,000 or more saved, that might not be enough to survive a job loss for six months or more. A job loss can come as a shock. However, with level-headedness and smart planning, many people can avoid dire financial situations in the wake of a layoff.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
