DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

The time of the falling leaves has come again. Once more in our morning walk we tread upon carpets of gold and crimson, of brown and bronze, woven by the winds or the rains out of these delicate textures while we slept. How beautifully the leaves grow old! How full of light and color are their last days! There are exceptions, of course. The leaves of most of the fruit-trees fade and wither and fall ingloriously. They bequeath their heritage of color to their fruit. Upon it they lavish the hues which other trees lavish upon their leaves.... But in October what a feast to the eye our woods and groves present! The whole body of the air seems enriched by their calm, slow radiance. They are giving back the light they have been absorbing from the sun all summer.
Start Here! Don’t pass up this fantastic Fall special from M&R Automotive.

BREAST CANCER IS THE SECOND MOST COMMON TYPE OF CANCER IN AMERICAN WOMEN. Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except skin cancer. Breast cancer is second to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in American women. However, deaths from breast cancer have decreased a little bit every year between 2003 and 2012. Breast cancer also occurs in men, but the number of new cases is small.

Potential treatment options after a breast cancer diagnosis A breast cancer diagnosis is something no one wants to receive. But the burden of breast cancer is substantial. In fact, the World Health Organization notes that breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in women worldwide. Thankfully, breast cancer survival rates are high in many parts of the world, particularly in developed countries such as the United States, Canada and Japan. While survival rates are lower in developing countries, it is encouraging to know that the average five-year survival rates are as high as 90 percent in some nations. That suggests that the strategies used to successfully fight breast cancer in developed nations may one day prove as effective in developing nations, potentially leading to a sharp decline in global breast cancer deaths. Upon being diagnosed with breast cancer, patients will be educated about a host of potential treatment options. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that breast cancer is treated in several ways, and the course of treatment a doctor recommends will depend on the kind of breast cancer and how far it has spread. In addition, breast cancer is made up of many different kinds of cancer cells, which often necessitates the use of various types of treatments to get rid of the cancer. The following are some treatment options doctors may discuss with breast cancer patients. • Surgery: Surgery is typically the first line of attack against breast cancer. The CDC says the goal of surgery is to cut out cancer tissue. Some common breast cancer surgeries include lumpectomy, in which the tumor and a small amount of surrounding tissue is removed, and mastectomy, in which all of the breast tissue is removed. • Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is used to treat various types of cancer and involves the administration of special medicines to shrink or kill existing cancer cells. Chemotherapy is sometimes administered prior to surgery in an attempt to shrink the cancer. • Radiation therapy: Radiation therapy aims to kill cancer cells using high-energy rays that are similar to X-rays. Sometimes referred to as “radiotherapy,” radiation therapy is overseen by a radiation oncologist who specializes in this type of treatment. • Hormonal therapy: Estrogen makes hormone-receptorpositive breast cancers grow, and hormonal therapy, which may be referred to as “anti-estrogen” therapy, aims to reduce the amount of estrogen in the body and block its action on breast cancer cells. • Targeted therapies: These therapies, which are generally less likely than chemotherapy to harm normal, healthy cells, target specific characteristics of the cancer cells. Cancer cells can have many characteristics, so there are various types of targeted therapies. Breast cancer treatments can be highly effective in the fight against breast cancer, particularly when the disease is caught in its early stages. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Medicare Enrollment Season Is Coming!
A Look Back…
5 Tips To Make Sure You’re In The Right Plan
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Oct. 25, 1881, Pablo Picasso, one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century, is born in Malaga, Spain. Picasso’s work comprises more than 50,000 paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures and ceramics produced over 80 years. He had his first exhibit at age 13. * On Oct. 24, 1901, schoolteacher Annie Edson Taylor becomes the first person to take the plunge over Niagara Falls in a barrel in an attention-getting stunt. She reached the shore alive, if a bit battered. Taylor claimed she was in her 40s, but records later showed she was 63. * On Oct. 26, 1942, the last U.S. carrier built before America entered World War II, the USS Hornet, is so badly damaged by Japanese warplanes in the Battle of Santa Cruz that it must be abandoned and was later sunk. The Hornet launched the Doolittle Raid on Tokyo.
(NAPSI)—Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 to December 7, 2019. This is your yearly chance to shop for insurance coverage that best meets your needs. People covered by Medicare will have even more plans with a host of new benefits to choose from for 2020. Here are five things to keep in mind for Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period. 1. Review your 2020 coverage options. Medicare Advantage plan details change each year, so the policy that was the least expensive or best match for you in 2019 may not be right for 2020. Changes to premiums, deductibles and co-pays can be costly. A recent eHealth analysis of people using eHealthMedicare.com to compare Medicare plans found that fewer than one in ten were enrolled in the lowest cost plan for their personal prescription drug regimen. Those who switched to their optimal drug plan stood to save an average of $900 per year. 2. Look out for drug coverage changes. It’s common for insurance companies to tweak their list of covered drug and prices. That can mean higher out-of-pocket expenses. Check to make sure that the medications you need are still covered by your plan in 2020, and pay close attention to any special rules you need to follow to get the most coverage for your medications. Online tools, including eHealthMedicare.com’s prescription drug coverage comparison tool, can help you find the best option for 2020. 3. Make sure your doctors are still covered. The doctors and hospitals that participate in your Medicare plan’s network often change each year as well. Make sure your preferred providers are covered under your current plan or any new plan that interests you. The amount you’ll pay when you get care from a doctor or hospital that does not participate with your plan will be higher than what you’ll pay if you stay within your plan’s network, and some health insurers won’t cover out-of-network providers at all, except in an emergency. 4. Compare benefits. Along with price comparisons, be sure to review the full range of services and benefits offered by competing Medicare plans. These can include everything from preferred pharmacy and mail-order prescription discounts to dental, vision, hearing and even fitness benefits. And for 2020, many Medicare Advantage plans will offer supplemental benefits that provide additional assistance to people with chronic illness, such as nonemergency transportation, virtual medical visits, caregiver support, nutritional counseling and meal delivery, and air conditioning, among others. 5. Work with a professional to understand your choices. To make sure you’re viewing a wide range of plans available on the market, work with an expert in Medicare products that represents more than just one insurance company. It doesn’t cost anything extra. A licensed agent can help you understand and make sense of all your options and select coverage that best matches your needs, budget, and lifestyle.

Black cats have appeared throughout history. Ancient Egyptians once worshiped black cats, and owning a black cat was thought to bring good luck. Those who live in England and Japan also felt black cats were harbingers of good luck. In Japan, some believe that a single woman who owns a black cat has a better chance of attracting suitors.
Apple bobbing has been linked to Samhain, the precursor to modern day Halloween. Celts believed apples could be used to determine if marriages would occur during a certain time of year. Young, unmarried people would attempt to bite into an apple floating in water or hanging from a string. The first to bite the apple would be the next to marry. OPEN NOW TILL NOV. 16TH

HALLOWEEN SUPERSTITIONS REVEALED Halloween is steeped in tradition. Halloween season also is a time of year when superstitions take root and add to the spooky and often silly nature of the holiday. Some Halloween traditions can be traced back to the ancient Celts and their belief that spirits of the deceased were able to wander the earth during the time they called Samhain. Costumes were worn so the living could blend in with ghosts, and treats were laid out to appease the spirits. Over the years, additional Halloween superstitions have emerged.

Office - 538-2745 Cell - 585-259-5117 Pager - 527-7437 HOW DO WE KNOW LASIK IS SAFE? (NAPSI)—For those thinking about their vision correction options, the question “Is LASIK safe?” is likely top of mind. To answer, ophthalmologist and chair of the Refractive Surgery Clinical Committee for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, John Vukich, M.D., provides hard data: LASIK has been around for a long time, 20 years, with 19.1 million procedures in the U.S. alone. An enormous amount of research has been conducted: There are more than 7,000 peer-reviewed clinical studies on LASIK performance, safety and outcomes. Based on that science, we know LASIK is very safe and has a less than 1 percent risk of sight-threatening complications. In fact, studies show LASIK is safer than long-term contact lens wear, where the risk of infection is actually pretty high. The patient satisfaction rate with LASIK is more than 96 percent, the highest of any elective medical procedure available today. However, LASIK isn’t for everyone. The only way to know for certain is to have a thorough eye exam with a highly qualified refractive surgeon to find out if you are a good candidate and then decide if it is right for you and your vision. United Way of Livingston County Supports Local Nonprofits By Amanda Dudek
K
aren Rumfola, Regional Director for the United Way of Livingston County (UWLC) emphasizes strongly that, although United Way is a national organization, the United Way of Livingston County is a local chapter, and all of the funds it raises stay in Livingston County, New York – a very important distinction. “We support 18 not-for-profit agencies with benefits reaching from pre-birth until the last moments in someone’s life,” explained Rumfola. “These agencies represent a variety of services, including helping others escape domestic violence and providing gifts to children in need.” Rumfola works part-time as the only chapter employee. “There is a myth that maybe the money raised here goes somewhere else, like Rochester,” said Rumfola. “The money raised here stays in Livingston County. It doesn’t go to the National United Way.” Many Livingston County charitable organizations are grassroots, so the UWLC’s support really matters. “Our annual campaign that runs year-round,” Rumfola stated. “Agencies put in an application, and our volunteers allocate available dollars. If an agency asks for $30,000, but we can only give them $5,000 due to available funds, that’s significant.” Rumfola, Regional Director for the past 19 years, has seen many ways in which UWLC continues to make a difference. “There was one little boy whose dream was to play baseball, but he had a disability that prevented him from playing school sports,” she recalled. “The YMCA had a program in which he could play, and every time he went by that park, he would say, ‘That is where they let me play baseball. That is where I had so much fun!’” There have been so many more examples. “When you give to the UWLC, you are supporting your friends, colleagues and neighbors,” Rumfola said. PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

“Abstinence is as easy for me as temperance would be difficult…” ~ Samuel Johnson There is a great deal of wisdom in Dr. Johnson’s epigram. For those who might not be familiar with any words he used, Dr. Johnson is remembered chiefly as a lexicographer, and developed one of the first authoritative dictionaries. Johnson tells us that if we want to eliminate a bad habit, it is easier to abstain entirely than try to practice moderation. Once we have conditioned ourselves to make the effort, we’ll find it as easy to abstain as to “cut down”…a practice which only serves to keep our bad habit alive. We serve families of all faiths and creeds with dignity and good taste. We are locally owned and operated and take a sincere interest in all who come to us for our professional aid.

Shirley Ann Donovan Mulvaney October 15, 2019
Joseph Hynes “Joe” October 1, 2019 Livonia Center: At age 77, Joe passed away with his family by his side on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY. Joe was born in Rochester to the late George and Gertrude Hynes. Predeceased by his siblings, Gertrude Hoban, Norma Sotir, and Owen Hynes. Survived by his children; Terry (Tyan) Hynes of Seattle, WA, Sergeant First Class Edward (Cherina Perimon) Hynes of Anahuac, TX, Bob Hynes, Johanna Hynes, and their mother Mary Hynes; his grandchildren; Fiona and Owen Hynes, Lucien Hildreth, Murphy Hynes and their mother Michelle Struble. His siblings; Monica (Ralph) Boss, George (Peg) Hynes, Jim ( Judy) Hynes, his brother-in-law, Alex Sotir, and his sisterin-law Pat Hynes, along with many nieces, nephews as well as great nieces and nephews, and lovingly cared for by Amy Hendrickson. Joe lived a full life; he spent his youth pushing boundaries, and he was fond of telling those stories to his family and friends. One of his favorites was how at the age of 4 or 5 he managed to convince his older brother to try on their father’s police-issued handcuffs. Unfortunately, their father was on a hunting trip with the keys so when the boys could not get the cuffs back off, their mother had to take them to the station to have the desk sergeant remove them. Joe felt it was a personal triumph that his older brother had to go to the police station shirtless in a snowstorm to get the cuffs removed. After graduating high school Joe enlisted in the Navy to travel and see the world. Upon completion of his service he returned to Rochester and became a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. As an electrician Joe was known as a mentor to many young apprentices, and we believe it was during this time that he coined one of his favorite sayings, “I can’t believe I taught you everything I know and you still know nothing.” This was Joe’s trademark – always willing to help, and always ready with a witticism and probably a criticism or two. For as all who knew Joe can attest, Joe had never been wrong in his life, at least according to Joe. After retiring from the Union, Joe became well-known at a local grocery store where he would spend his days supporting education by playing scratch off lottery tickets for up to eight hours a day. While some may say that this was an issue, to those of us who knew him best it meant he was easy to find. His son who served in the Army used to state that he would come home on leave, drop his bags at the house and then head to the customer service desk at West’s to say hi to Dad. He spent so much time at that counter scratching tickets that his sons had to take their future wives and the mothers of their children to the store to meet Joe, where it is rumored he may have even stopped scratching for a second to say hi, though some doubt that was the case. Friends and family were invited to call on Wednesday, October 9, 2019 from 4-7 PM at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 21 Big Tree St. Livonia, NY. A funeral mass was held on Thursday, October 10, 2019 at 11 am at St. Matthew’s Church, 6591 Richmond Mills Road Livonia, NY. Interment immediately followed mass at St. Michael’s cemetery on Shelly Road in Livonia. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution may be made to the Golisano Children’s Hospital, 601 Elmwood Ave, Rochester, NY 14642.

(NAPSI)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found, it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows. The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energy-efficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580 based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone. An Answer Fortunately, there’s an alternative. Window films offer advanced energy savings and other benefits and can be quickly installed at a fraction of the cost of replacement windows, often with a return on investment in under three years. “Window films professionally installed on structurally soundsingle or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association. One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

Once leaves begin to fall more heavily, rake them up and add them to compost piles. The resource GardeningKnowHow.com notes composting leaves creates a dark, rich and organic matter that can add nutrients to garden soil and loosen compacted earth. Leaving leaves on the lawn once they start to fall in great numbers makes it hard for grass blades to breathe, and the leaves can block moisture from reaching the soil, which needs water to maintain strong roots. In addition, potentially harmful pathogens can breed on damp leaves left on a lawn, and such bacteria can cause significant damage to the turf over time.

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS

Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees.

SHIPS THAT DON’T FLOAT
www.smithlumber.doitbest.com COMMON HALLOWEEN PHOBIAS Halloween is about embracing the scary and the spooky and enjoying all off the things that go “bump” in the night. Naturally, the holiday can drum up some fears and tap into peoples’ anxieties, especially when they come face-to-face with some of the symbols of Halloween. Some of these fears may be full-blown phobias. A phobia is defined as an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something. Phobias can elicit feelings of dread and horror. In psychological terms, it is an anxiety disorder in which a person will go to great lengths to avoid a perceived danger. This danger is usually much greater in the person’s mind than in real life. Several symbols of Halloween can be tied to phobias. A person with achluophobia may not enjoy the darkness of the Halloween night. Someone with coimetrophobia probably would not want to visit a cemetery. Coming in contact with a ghost would not be ideal for someone with phasmophobia. Anyone with wiccaphobia might fear meeting up with a broom-riding witch. One of the more common phobias is arachnophobia, which is a fear of spiders. Spider decorations are common come Halloween, so people with arachnophobia may struggle on and around October 31. While Halloween will never fall on the thirteenth day of the month, the number 13 has been linked to Halloween festivities. Many people view the number 13 to be a harbinger of bad luck. This is especially so for those with triskaidekaphobia, or the fear of the number 13. Believe it or not, some people have a crippling fear of Halloween itself. This phobia is called samhainophobia. which is the fear of Halloween or the fear of the festival of the dead. The term “samhainophobia” originates from “Samhain,” meaning summer’s end. Samhain was also the name of the festival celebrated by the Celts to mark the transition from summer to winter. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2019
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) It might not be wise to pursue goals involving others, unless you can stop impulsively rejecting new ideas. Either open your mind or wait until next week, when this “ornery” mood passes. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time for the Bovine to be creative and practical for yourself and your surroundings. Shop wisely, not impulsively, and keep your Bull’s eye focused on quality, not quantity. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You should feel more confident about moving ahead with plans that had to be delayed by an unexpected turn of events. Also, family matters might need more time than first anticipated. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be considerate of others as you move into a new area in your professional life. Take time to meet people and discuss mutual goals. The more you get to know each other, the better. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Creating a fuss could get your ideas noticed quickly. But it would be best to present your case, and then wait for a reaction to follow in due course, rather than try to force it to happen. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Unkept promises might cause plans to go awry this week. You can either grumble about people “letting you down” or find a way to make the best of it and move on. The choice is yours. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Putting off making a commitment early in the week could be a good move. It’s best to act when you know you’re making an informed decision. Expect more facts to emerge by the week’s end. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A recent act of kindness on your part could take on special meaning this week. Also, look for signs of upcoming changes in both your personal and professional relationships. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Many of the tougher communication barriers between you and others in the workplace or at home could begin breaking down this week. Expect some surprises to emerge. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your “tough love” attitude toward someone you care for could be misunderstood. Try to be less judgmental and show more consideration in the way you relate to that person. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An unexpected workplace challenge could be daunting. But take what you know (and you know more than you realize) and apply it to the problem, and you should see positive results. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Recent relationship changes for both single and paired Pisces continue to influence much of your week. Keep your focus on developing the positive aspects as you move along. BORN THIS WEEK: You set your goals with assurance and influence others to follow suit. You would be an excellent philosopher and teacher.

Treasure Hunting Safety Tips For The Savvy Yard Sale Shopper
Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Second-hand items, especially electronics, building supplies, appliances and helmets, may carry certain risks if damaged or used. If you are planning on reselling consumer items, check the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Web site for a guide on things that can and cannot be sold, and for product recalls. CSA Group, a leading certification and testing organization, offers these safety tips for yard sale shoppers.
Purchasing used items may be good for the wallet, but such purchases also can benefit the environment. Used items go on sale every day, whether they’re preowned cars or used clothing. Saving items from landfills prematurely reduces the number of new things that need to be manufactured, saving energy as well as money. There are so many ways to make the most of used merchandise and find the things you need. Some ways men and women concerned about the environment can look to preowned items to benefit the planet and their pocketbooks include organizing a tag sale and scanning local advertisements.
Counterfeit or illegal goods: Check the “look and feel” of goods. Fake products often seem light and flimsy.

Open part-time cashier/ service desk position: Looking for an individual who has had cashier or service desk experience and can handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Must be customer service-oriented, a team player, and a good communicator. Preferably someone who would be available early mornings, starting at 5 a.m. Must be available weekends. Interested applicant may apply online at www.honeoyefallsmarketplace.com.
THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.
