EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED WHEN RENOVATING Delays or schedule changes: Even the best contractors cannot control every aspect of the job. They rely on subcontractors and vendors to do portions of the work. Materials may not always arrive on time, or they may fall short of homeowners’ expectations. This can push back the project schedule. Homeowners should hope for everything to be done on time, but it can be less stressful if homeowners anticipate delays and be a pleasant surprise if there are no delays.

PREPARE YOUR LAWN & GARDEN FOR WINTER Rake leaves as they start to fall more heavily. Once leaves begin to fall more heavily, rake them up and add them to compost piles. The resource GardeningKnowHow.com notes composting leaves creates a dark, rich and organic matter that can add nutrients to garden soil and loosen compacted earth. Leaving leaves on the lawn once they start to fall in great numbers makes it hard for grass blades to breathe, and the leaves can block moisture from reaching the soil, which needs water to maintain strong roots. In addition, potentially harmful pathogens can breed on damp leaves left on a lawn, and such bacteria can cause significant damage to the turf over time.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the U.S. Department of Labor and data from the U.S. Census Bureau, registered nurse is the most common occupation for women in the United States labor force. Slightly less than 2.1 million women worked as registered nurses in 2017, the most recent year for which statistics are available. Such figures are harder to come by in regard to Canada, but Statista reports that the labor participation rate among women in Canada in 2018 was right around 64 percent. That rate marks a slight decrease from its 21st century peak in 2005, when 66.7 percent of women were active members of the Canadian workforce. In the United States, more than two million women worked as secretaries or administrative assistants in 2017, making these professions the second most common occupation among female workers. Elementary and middle school teachers was the third most common occupation for female professionals, employing more than 1.9 million women in 2017. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau also indicates that women have the lion’s share of jobs in an assortment of professions, including preschool and kindergarten teachers, secretaries and administrative assistants, childcare workers, and dental assistants. Women hold at least 92 percent of the jobs in each of those professions in the United States.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Professional Pet Sitter Is Teen’s Dream Job DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your column about a pet sitter who had to deal with a sick cat. Even though it was a scary story, I still want to be a professional pet sitter. I’m still in high school, but this is a dream job for me. How do I get started? Do I need to be certified by a national organization? -- Sarah, Blue Ridge, Georgia DEAR SARAH: Pet sitting can be a rewarding career, especially if you do the groundwork needed to really succeed at it. You don’t need a certificate from an organization like the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters, but having a certificate helps prospective clients feel more confident that you know your job and take it seriously. Here’s a few steps to take before starting a pet sitting business. -- Talk to your parents about what you want to do. Because you’re under 18, it’s important to involve them in this decision. -- Do some trial pet-sitting. With your parents’ permission and supervision, pet sit for family friends or relatives. You’ll get valuable experience and learn if you really like doing this. -- Join pet sitting groups on social media. You can glean lots of useful advice from experienced pet sitters. -- Learn about starting and running a small business. If your high school doesn’t offer a class or a club, sign up at a nearby community college. -- Contact the Small Business Association (SBA.gov). They offer free counseling services to help you get a small business off the ground. -- Check out some major pet sitting organizations online. The NAPPS (https://petsitters.org) in the U.S. and Pet Sitters International (https://www.petsit.com/) have lots of information and advice on running a great pet-sitting business. Send your questions, tips or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.

A hidden fire burns perpetually upon the hearth of the world.... In autumn this great conflagration becomes especially manifest. Then the flame that is slowly and mysteriously consuming every green thing bursts into vivid radiance. Every blade of grass and every leaf in the woodlands is cast into the great oven of Nature; and the bright colours of their fading are literally the flames of their consuming. The golden harvest-fields are glowing in the heart of the furnace.... By this autumn fire God every year purges the floor of nature. All effete substances that have served their purpose in the old form are burnt up. Everywhere God makes sweet and clean the earth with fire.

Apple bobbing has been linked to Samhain, the precursor to modern day Halloween. Celts believed apples could be used to determine if marriages would occur during a certain time of year. Young, unmarried people would attempt to bite into an apple floating in water or hanging from a string. The first to bite the apple would be the next to marry.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

DID YOU KNOW? A study from the Gap Year Association found that 77 percent of students who take a gap year do so between high school and college. Parents may not know how to react when their soon-to-be or newly minted high school graduates bring up the idea of taking a gap year, but additional findings from the GYA’s “National Alumni Survey” might inspire parents to look at gap years more positively. For example, the survey, the findings of which were based on the responses of hundreds of American and Canadian citizens who had taken gap years in the past, found that 98 percent of respondents indicated their gap years helped them develop as a person, while 96 percent felt their gap years improved their self-confidence. In addition, 84 percent of respondents felt that they acquired skills to be successful in their careers during their gap years. Perhaps of most interest to parents of high school students contemplating gap years is that 73 percent of survey respondents felt their gap years increased their readiness for college and 57 percent said their gap years helped them determine what they wanted to study in college.

LEAF PEEPING PLANNING GUIDE Peak viewing times Areas of the northern-most latitude will start to show color earlier than more southern areas. Generally speaking, the leaf-viewing season begins in late September and runs through early November for much of North America. Peak times for viewing depend on areas of travel and time of year. For large swaths of Canada and the United States, plan trips for late-September to mid-October. The Weather Channel offers maps and charts at www.weather.com/maps/fall-foliage for the peak times for many areas of the U.S.
Proposal One: Amending the Apportionment and Redistricting Process Proposal Two: Right to Clean Air, Clean Water, and a Healthful Environment Proposal Three: Eliminating Ten-Day-Advance Voter Registration Requirement Proposal Four: Authorizing No-Excuse Absentee Ballot Voting Proposal Five: Increasing the Jurisdiction of the New York City Civil Court Additionally, there will be three proposals for the Town of Conesus to extend the terms of Highway Superintendent, Town Clerk and Town supervisor from two to four years beginning January 1, 2024.

Wadsworth Library: A Casual Conversation: Seniors in our Community Wednesday, October 27 at 2:00 pm. Please join us for the first in a series of Casual Conversations. A Casual Conversation: Seniors in our Community will focus on services of interest to adults in the 55+ age group. We will be talking about what is working well for seniors in our community and what residents would like to see more of. We then hope to narrow it down and see where the library might fit in. We are focusing on this age group because when we updated our Long Range Plan a year ago one of the areas targeted for improvement was the library’s services for senior citizens. After the event tour the new children’s room. Refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to to geneseolibrarydirector@owwl.org or call the library at 585-243-0440 to let us know if you’ll be able to attend.

Local Artisan Carves Wildlife Sculptures for Charity BY AMANDA DUDEK
W
hen heavy equipment mechanic Dylan Backus left his nine to five to pursue woodworking fulltime, he knew it wouldn’t be easy. With hard work and the invaluable support of his wife, Sabrina, Backus began creating custom pieces and doing projects for local family and friends out of his shop locations in Canadice and Livonia. Then, he began making art. Although it has only been about two and a half years since Backus changed careers, woodworking is in his blood. “I have always been intrigued by woodworking. It is therapeutic and relaxing, and it has always been in my family,” he said, adding that his father has also carved before. “We do our own projects. We have never hired anyone to make anything. Instead, we come up with the things we need and make them ourselves.” As Dylan and Sabrina Backus’ new company, Backus Backyard Creations, began gaining momentum, the couple was inspired to give back to local communities in a new way. Backus, an avid hunter and fisherman, had recently begun carving wildlife and saw in his art an opportunity to support nonprofit organizations and pet shelters which he observes must be struggling so much through these difficult times. They called their initiative Carvings for a Cause. Each week, Dylan Backus creates a carving, usually featuring area wildlife, and people pay for one of thirty “spots,” each a chance to win that week’s masterpiece. A portion of the proceeds goes directly to an area nonprofit organization or shelter. So far, Backus has created an impressive bear to benefit the Hornell Area Humane Society and a majestic owl to benefit Begin Again Horse Rescue in Lima. “I can’t even imagine how tough it is for them right now, and I love that we are donating,” said Backus. “We have been in contact with the Hornell Area Humane Society for a number of years. In fact, my parents just adopted a dog from them. They are a great group of people. Begin Again Horse Rescue, as well, is a group who work their tails off to help people out. It is amazing how much you may not notice all of the nonprofits around you. They run completely on donations, and we need to keep them alive and thriving. It feels so good to be able to give back to our communities.” When asked what inspires his creations, Backus answered that it is partly wildlife and partly what he sees in a given block of wood. “I love the outdoors and creating animals that you can find in this area,” he explained. “However, the decision of what exactly I am making happens in the moment. With the owl I just completed, I did not even know it was going to be an owl when I first started, but the layout of the grain in the wood, it kind of... spoke to me,” he continued. “I had a vision of it as an owl, and I just started blocking it off and creating that.”
●
While Dylan Backus is proud to be able to use his talent to help others, he sees giving back as well as running a local independent business as part of a bigger picture. “It goes beyond nonprofit companies,” he explained. “Everyone needs to depend on one another. We need to unite as a community and have each other’s backs. We need to have unity right now because things are tough.”
This delightful owl was carved by Dylan Backus in support of Begin Again Horse Rescue of Lima!
To Backus, this also means supporting area businesses. “We all need to shop local,” he said. “Everyone is ordering everything, and yes, we all do it. It is just easy. But you have to wonder if someone in your community has what you need or can do the job you need done for the same price or cheaper and coming from your hometown. I love seeing people out there shopping local, supporting their friends and family instead of giving their money to someone else. It’s about coming back to our roots. I know I would rather find someone local and give them the work instead.” Backus plans to continue Carvings for a Cause at least through the winter and even indefinitely. “I want to keep it alive, even if only with small carvings,” he said. “It is incredible what you can do for your community with a small business, connecting with the people around you. This is my favorite part of what we do!” To learn more, visit Backus Backyard Creations on Facebook.
We need to unite as a community and have each other’s backs... Someone in your community has or does what you need! - Dylan Backus

Local woodworker, Dylan Backus, stands next to one of his carvings: a very satisfied looking bear!
As for the process, Backus says each carver has to find his or her own techniques. “You have to have an eye for what you are doing and plan 10 cuts ahead,” he said. “I like to take my time and listen to music on headphones my wife bought me which block out

the noise of the chainsaws. I plan it out in my head, rather than draw it on the wood. I have watched many carvers and seen their techniques, but you can’t copy what others are doing. You have to find your own feel and rhythm.”

On the whole I take it that middle age is a happier period than youth. In the entire circle of the year there are no days so delightful as those of a fine October, when the trees are bare to the mild heavens, and the red leaves bestrew the road, and you can feel the breath of winter morning and evening—no days so calm, so tenderly solemn, and with such a reverent meekness in the air. ~Alexander Smith (1829–1867), “An Essay on an Old Subject”

Thomas Joseph Spadaro October 9, 2021 LeRoy: Thomas Joseph Spadaro, 74, of Le Roy, NY passed away on Saturday, October 9, 2021. Tom was born on August 24, 1947 to Samuel and Susan (Stoppi) Spadaro in Frackville, Pennsylvania. He moved with his parents as an infant to the town he grew to love, LeRoy, New York. After graduating from LeRoy High School, Tom enlisted in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. Due to a medical condition, he was honorably discharged early and returned to LeRoy where he married Linda Brown. They had two children, Amy in 1972 and Joseph in 1974. While raising his family, Tom worked for C.P. Ward and Bell Construction. If you are anywhere in the Rochester area, chances are good that you will travel over a bridge or pass by a building that he worked on. He loved to putter in his garage, fixing and painting cars and hosting gatherings with family and friends. As his children grew up, Tom relocated to Orange County, California. He started Southern California Maintenance and grew a successful company that encompassed all of his building talents. While in California, he met his wife, Gina (Wright). They shared a love of country-western music and dancing. Tom proved to be very talented at the two-step and wasn’t shy about showing it off. On Monday, December 15, 1997, Tom called Gina and asked her to marry him. She accepted and they went to City Hall for a romantic ceremony on their lunch break. While Tom was in California, his son Joe became interested in the limousine business. Joe started operations in LeRoy, and Tom used his self-taught craftsmanship to transform bus shells into party buses and ship them back to Joe. Seventeen buses later, Gina had had it with not having any parking space in the driveway or the garage, so Tom took this opportunity to start their relocation to LeRoy, back to the community and family that he loved. Tom and Gina acquired the property on the creek bank where Tom built their beautiful home. Every inch of their house, inside and out, has been touched by Tom’s talented hands.
Livonia: At age 78, Teresea passed away on Thursday, October 14, 2021 at Shore Winds Nursing Home in Rochester, NY. She was born in Rochester to the late Joseph and Virginia Vallone. the Village and bringing them back to life. Tom could walk into a dilapidated, neglected house and have a clear vision of what it could become. He was skilled in all aspects of homebuilding and remodeling and worked tirelessly in the transformation of each project, making LeRoy beautiful one home at a time. If you ever saw Tom’s old yellow truck parked in front of a house, you knew there was hard work and magic going on inside. You knew Tom cared about you if he gave you a nickname. Many friends, family members and co-workers became known by the nickname that Tom had given them. To name a few: Scoob, Chiquita Banana, Schmo, Buddy Boy, Beaner, Boss, Dude, Missified, Cassified, Squirrel, Ron Boy, Lulabell, Mouse, Shermanator, and Beulah. Tom served on the Zoning Board of Appeals for the Village. If he firmly believed in a person’s cause, he fought for them with everything he had. Tom was instrumental in getting the LeRoy Community Pool reopened. He believed that it was the community’s obligation to see that every child had the opportunity to learn how to swim and to have a venue for healthy social interaction. Aside from his family, this accomplishment was Tom’s greatest source of pride. Tom was predeceased by his parents and his first wife. He is survived by his brother, James Spadaro of Bonsall, California; his wife, Gina; his daughter, Amy (Daniel) Vanderhoof; his son, Joseph (Nikki Stone) Spadaro; and five grandchildren, Sydney and Zachary Vanderhoof; Joseph, Dominic and Anthony James (AJ) Spadaro. Services will be held privately by the family. A celebration of life will be held in Tom’s honor this coming Spring at his beloved Community Pool prior to the opening of the next pool season. The date and time will be published at a later date. We will invite all of Tom’s friends and family to join us in celebrating his beautiful life. Any memorial donations can be made to the LeRoy Community Pool in care of Amy Vanderhoof, 8 Garden Lane, LeRoy, NY 14482.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING Medical directives. In addition to a will, estate planning includes your wishes if you become incapacitated or suffer from a serious medical condition that precludes you from making decisions about your care and finances. Spouses can be named to make important health decisions, but you may want to indicate other information, such as life support measures or organ donation, as well. If you have strong opinions on treatment, medical directives and living wills are a necessity.

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Genetics may be the biggest culprit in undereye circles. Some people simply inherit fair or thin skin around the eyes. This can make blood that pools in these areas (from stretched or broken capillaries) more visible. While a person cannot change his or her skin tone, gently washing one’s face - paying careful attention to the sensitive eye area - can help reduce damage. Also, getting more sleep can increase circulation to this area and prevent blood pooling.

possible therapy to relieve back pain and stiffness associated with Parkinson’s disease? -- R.G. ANSWER: There have been many trials that show acupuncture is superior to no treatment for various symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. This is true especially for fatigue, but also in a composite score that includes stiffness. A systematic review of published studies found that “acupuncture has significant positive effects.” Other studies have shown that sham acupuncture, where random areas of the body were needled, was also effective in treating symptoms. This has led some skeptical authors to conclude that acupuncture is a placebo effect: The treatment convinces people that they are getting better, so they do feel better. However, if acupuncture were completely harmless and improved symptoms, I would recommend it to people who were interested. Acupuncture is mostly, but not entirely, harmless. Adverse events are not common with acupuncture, but they do happen. Minor adverse effects happen in about 9% of cases. Serious adverse events such as pneumothorax (sometimes called a collapsed lung) and nerve damage are occasionally reported. ***

THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY
Livingston Eye Care
Behavioral side effects Behavior also can be affected by stress, which may cause some people to abuse drugs or alcohol. Some may even turn to tobacco, either becoming a smoker or smoking more if they’re already smokers. Smoking has been linked to a host of negative physical side effects, including an increased risk of developing cancer. Angry outbursts, social withdrawal and overeating or undereating are some additional potential side effects of stress on the body.

Experienced in correcting complex & routine dental problems
DID YOU KNOW? Running on a variety of surfaces instead of sticking to just one surface may help runners reduce their risk of injury. Officials with the USA Track and Field’s Sports Medicine and Science Committee recommend that runners vary their runs so they run on pavement, trails and tracks. While it helps to run on various surfaces, researchers do not believe one particular surface is better than another. In fact, while running on asphalt has long been assumed to increase injury risk because of the presumption that harder surfaces produce greater impact forces on the body, a 2008 study from researchers at the Hannover Medical School Department of Plastic, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery in Germany found that running on asphalt surfaces decreased mid-portion tendinopathy risk while running on sand surfaces increased that risk tenfold.

BE COOL AND SAVE MONEY (NAPSI) — Many Americans may be surprised to learn that almost half their utility bill goes toward heating and cooling their home. Fortunately, the U.S. EPA’s ENERGY STAR Program offers resources to help you beat the heat—all while saving a, saving money and protecting the climate. Here’s how: Maintain or Upgrade Your HVAC System Check your system’s air filters. A dirty air filter will make the system work harder to keep you cool, wasting energy. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Rec Center Almost Opened Again My local recreation center almost opened again. A month ago, the center opened for indoor walking with strict rules. One week later, during a heated board meeting, mostly about masks versus no masks, the rec center supervisor said he was shutting it down for the foreseeable future. Since then there’s been a hue and cry, mostly between the mask police and the anti-mask folks. The center supervisor, ever accommodating but safety minded, declared that there would be certain days for people who wanted masks and days for those who didn’t want to wear masks. Walking on the track, he said, would be the only center activity. “Not fair,” cried those (mostly teen boys) who also wanted basketball, and no, they didn’t want to wear masks. Fine, he replied, there could be oneon-one basketball in three of the center’s courts. But, said others, if teen basketball was allowed, why couldn’t there be adult classes as well? So, the supervisor adjusted the schedule, did measurements on the floor, and outlined space on a basketball court where a no-mask yoga class could be held in the mornings with participants 8 feet apart. You know what happened next, right? The aerobics people wanted a class as well. The spin class wanted space and time (and the bikes). Then those from the still-closed senior center line-dance group wanted to use rec center space. It was right about that time that the supervisor quietly quit. I wasn’t there, but I have it on good authority that he handed the center’s keys to the loudest anti-mask person, saying, “You’re in charge. When the COVID rates go higher in this town, it’s all on you.” The next day, the town changed the locks on the rec center doors. The supervisor, as I heard it, packed a bag and retreated to his cabin in the woods, where he plans to stay until everyone comes to their senses. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? Dogs are wildly popular pets. The American Pet Products Association says there are 63.4 million households in the United States that have a dog, and with the exception of 2002 and 2015, that number has steadily risen since 2000. Certain breeds remain especially popular among dog owners. In August 2021, the pet insurance provider Trupanion released the most popular dog breeds of 2020, and the top five breeds were: 1. Labrador retriever 2. Golden retriever 3. Goldendoodle 4. German shepherd 5. Labradoodle
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “If you heat a pita in the microwave first, it will be easier to open and will rip less. About 10 seconds should do it.” -- M.E. in Georgia * Baby have diaper rash? One of the best remedies is “air time” -- that is, letting baby go without a diaper for a bit. Another simple soother is a baking soda bath. Try adding 2-4 tablespoons of baking soda to Junior’s bathwater. * Use this tip to vacuum seal your meat for the freezer without any special equipment! Add meat pieces to a plastic, zipper-top bag. Fill a large pot several inches deep with water. Seal all but an inch or so of the bag. As you lower the bag into the water (zipper top up) the air will escape through the unsealed portion. When no air remains, seal the bag and then remove from the water. * “Have you tried this single-serving blender hack using a mason jar? Many standard-size blender blades can be screwed on to a pint Mason jar. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you can make single servings of smoothies to blend and go.” -- T.U. in South Carolina * “Apply petroleum jelly to the panes of your windows before painting the trim. This works better than masking tape in many ways. It is easily removed, and even large paint flecks come right off.” -- P.S. in Illinois * After you’ve cooked your chicken whole, remove the meat and throw the bones and remaining carcass in the slow cooker with 3-4 cups of water. Let it cook on low for several hours for a spectacularly flavorful broth. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

A Letter to Town of Avon Residents October 19, 2021 Dear Town of Avon Residents: In December 2020, the Town of Avon Town Board proposed a local law that would have raised Supervisor David LeFeber’s salary by 45%, and Councilmens’ salaries by 18%. A letter published in this forum termed the raises unreasonable and irresponsible; the Board subsequently rescinded the proposed law. The Board is now crafting a budget for fiscal year 2022. On October 14, the Board filed its preliminary budget. This budget, if adopted, raises the salary of Supervisor LeFeber by $7,600 (from $22,400 to $30,000), an increase of 34%.
CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY
ONLINE ONLY AUCTION
As was the case in December 2020, there is no justification for a raise of this magnitude; a raise of 34% is as unreasonable and irresponsible as a raise of 45%.

By its action, the Board is repeating its previous error; instead of adopting a reasonable, incremental approach to raise Supervisor LeFeber’s salary, the Board has opted to again act in a manner that ignores and is insensitive to public realities and perceptions. A public hearing on the preliminary budget is scheduled for Thursday, October 28, at 6:00PM at the Town Office, 23 Genesee Street. The public hearing is an opportunity to inform the Town Board of your opinions on this important issue of Avon government.

Not zero but hero
S E V RA The Community Hygiene Bank, now located at Jubilee Christian Church in Brockport, serves members in the Brockport Central School District with needed personal hygiene items, paper goods and cleaning supplies. Thanks to those who organized or put up donation bins in their areas to help collect needed hygiene items for this drive. With your help, we were able to distribute “Personal Blessing Bags” of full-sized, needed items to over 200 families this past summer. We thank you!
Getting vaccinated does not reduce your risk of transmitting Covid. It reduces your risk of becoming severely ill and taking up a coveted bed in the hospital. Unfortunately, the mandate did not allow for those healthcare workers who put their lives on the line, got Covid, are fully recovered, and have natural immunity. Natural immunity has been found to be stronger than vaccinated immunity. Please look this up yourself in studies that have come out of Israel. I believe most of the healthcare workers who chose not to get vaccinated did so because they had Covid and recovered. Some suggest it may cause harmful health effects to be vaccinated when you have already recovered and have natural immunity, especially in younger people. It is all just so sad how divisive this has become, and it shouldn’t be.
To all my angels
Zero not hero unnecessary hostility
Hygiene Bank thanks
Words cannot express just how we feel. Heartfelt thank yous go out to all my angels at Wedgewood Rehab & Nursing Center who literally saved my life on October 13th. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, Sue & Tom
Obviously you are not aware a twice “Moderna” vaccinated person can still get Covid-19 AND pass it on to an unsuspecting, unvaccinated person. I am proof positive.Your rancorous vitriol is uncalled for: [pitting] brother against brother and father against son until hostility and animosity drive our lives. What ever happened to “love thy neighbor” and “do unto others?” We are all in these times together. Can we just concentrate on getting along? I affirm my heartfelt thank you to my wonderful, patient, and kind nurses and aides at Noyes hospital, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated, you are my heroes. May you always have the courage to stand for your convictions. God Bless Us, Everyone.
Nice surprise What a nice surprise to hear someone in the Sport of Kings restaurant paid for my supper on October 3rd! It was very good, and I sure do appreciate your doing so. I will pass it forward to my 87-year-old Veteran friend. Thank you!
Thank you for holding strong To all the people who are standing strong and holding to their beliefs, thank you! Your beliefs are yours alone, and you are a good person for holding to those beliefs. You are not selfish! You are not bad, and you are not wrong! You are a hero, and you are not alone! To any person who has to choose between their job and their beliefs and chooses their beliefs: you are the kind of person that will save this world, and we need more people like you. I applaud your strength of character and your commitment to your beliefs. If you are struggling right now, please know there are others like you, so don’t be afraid to look around and seek those people out. We know that you stand strong for your beliefs because you do care, not only about yourself but about everyone. If you didn’t care, you would give in and take the easy route, but you have chosen to stand strong and that shows the goodness in your heart and your strength of character. Thank you!
Now firing So the threats to fire employees for not getting something that was never required of them before now is currently being carried out. If these companies want to fire perfectly good employees willing to work, why do those companies hang banners on the fronts of their buildings that say, “Now Hiring?” It would stand to reason if companies need workers, they should not be firing them. Would it not be more accurate for the company to hang a banner that said, “Now Firing?”
S T N RA
Shout out to Brenda & Mary Anne! Both my husband and I went to Walgreen’s to pick up items that we usually get with our health plan. This time, it was a disaster! Mary Anne initially had to void the entire order because some items apparently were not covered by our insurance plan (even though they had been before). Mary Anne kept telling me that it wasn’t my fault. Brenda was helping my husband. She, too, was very understanding. Finally, we got through our large order, even if it was a few items at a time. Even though it was frustrating, I want to thank Mary Anne and Brenda for their patience and kindness. Thanks!

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Don’t be afraid to take risks. Successful women are not afraid to take risks. Many may have decided they don’t fit a specific mold and want to affect change. However, calculated risks are different from reckless decisions, and it is important to recognize the difference. A calculated risk may involve starting your own business after learning the ropes in a specific field and testing the waters. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO ANSWER THE CALL
Camp Stella Maris on Conesus Lake is looking for a
(NAPSI)—When an emergency strikes, firefighters are there to answer the call. In fact, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that fire departments responded to over 35 million calls in 2016. What people may not realize is that the majority of these firefighters are volunteers, donating their time and energy to be there for those in need.
Full-Time Cleaner Responsible for cleanliness of facilities throughout camp (restrooms, cabins, dining halls, kitchens, offices, etc); light maintenance duties (changing light bulbs, painting, etc).
“It really is neighbors helping neighbors,” said Steve Hirsch, volunteer firefighter and chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “There is nothing more rewarding than being a volunteer firefighter—we are there for our neighbors when they are having their worst possible day.” The need for volunteer firefighters is stronger than ever. While the number of calls has tripled in the last 30 years, the number of volunteer firefighters has decreased. This trend has become especially noticeable in the last few years. According to NFPA data, there were 682,600 volunteer firefighters in 2017, down from 814,850 in 2015. Despite the decline, volunteers play a critical role in the nation’s emergency services, particularly in small and rural communities. Of the nearly 30,000 fire departments in the U.S., 83 percent are either entirely or mostly volunteer. These volunteers respond to nearly every type of emergency—structure fires, wildfires, medical emergencies, natural disasters, vehicle crashes, hazardous materials spills, search and rescue, active shooter threats, and more. “We need more people to step up and serve so that we can continue to provide critical life saving services in our local communities,” said Hirsch. “The biggest requirement is the desire to help others. The rest can be taught.”
40 hours/week; M-F with flexibility of a possible weekend workday; must be a minimum of 21 years of age and have reliable transportation.
If qualified and interested, submit resume to:
Ryan Ellison, Camp Stella Maris, 4395 E. Lake Rd., Livonia, NY 14487 or email: ryan@campstellamaris.org or fax: (585) 346-6921

Volunteering with a local fire department takes commitment and dedication, but the benefits are many. Making a difference, saving lives, developing new skills, and being part of a close knit team are all reasons people choose to volunteer. “I’m a lawyer by trade, but I don’t think about that every day. I think every day about being a volunteer firefighter. It truly is the most impactful way I can serve my community,” said Hirsch.

A LETTER TO OUR PATIENTS AND STAFF: My career as a general dentist has come to an end, due to bi-lateral osteoarthritis in my right and left thumbs which will need surgery to correct. This is not how I envisioned my career coming to an end as your dentist, however, it is what it is. The one thing for certain is that I am very grateful to all my patients that I have treated for the trust you showed in me to do that work on you and your families. I came to the office everyday to continue to earn your trust and friendship. I wanted to thank you all for that. The next group of people I would like to thank are the dental teams that I have had the honor of working with in Warsaw and in the last years, Geneseo offices. These ladies are the most dedicated to their profession that I have seen. They showed each day how much they cared for all who walked into those offices. I have told a number of patients and believe it with my whole heart the statement that “You are only as successful as the people you surround yourself with”. This is so true for the success of Summit Family Dental and will be true going forward in the future to ensure that the quality of dental care will remain the of the highest level and continue to advance the modern techniques’ that the new dentists will bring to the office.
