Black cats have appeared throughout history. Ancient Egyptians once worshiped black cats, and owning a black cat was thought to bring good luck. Those who live in England and Japan also felt black cats were harbingers of good luck. In Japan, some believe that a single woman who owns a black cat has a better chance of attracting suitors.

Every employer must be prepared to conduct fair and impartial investigations into employee complaints and allegations of misconduct. This responsibility includes carefully examining the facts and circumstances, thoughtfully considering the evidence, and reaching reasonable conclusions. The results of poorly conducted workplace investigations–which can be devastating to the individuals involved as well as the company–often include: continued workplace misconduct; retaliation; formal complaints against the employer filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), lawsuits; and even personal liability for management, HR, and anyone conducting investigations. This course will include a review of the laws, regulations, and employer obligations related to workplace investigations, as well as a discussion of the importance of following a consistent and thorough workplace complaint investigation process. Participants will have an opportunity to develop a complaint response plan, investigation plan and timeline, and interview questions, and work through a mock investigation. Objectives: 1. A better understanding of the laws, regulations, and obligations related to workplace investigations 2. Internal vs. external workplace investigations, and when each may be appropriate 3. Developing a complaint response plan and basic investigation plan 4. How to conduct an effective workplace investigation 5. The importance of reaching a conclusion with every investigation Fee $119 • GCC Batavia Campus Friday, 11/8 • 9:00 am-4:00 pm (1 hour lunch break on your own) Register by Thursday, October 31, 2019

Dansville Moose Club featuring

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Caution dominates the Sheep’s monetary aspect this week. Rams and Ewes might want to shear their big spending plans until a more favorable financial picture begins to emerge by week’s end. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Thrift counts both at home and at work. So you might want to rethink major purchases or investments. Also, be wary of a so-called revelation about a previous decision. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Both household budgets and workplace accounts might benefit from some judicious trimming of unnecessary expenses. A partnership could lead to an unexpected challenge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A previously overlooked opportunity could re-emerge with a new travel-related matter. Check this out carefully to see if it’s what you really want before you decide one way or another. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This could be the start of a new career-changing phase, so start marking down your many accomplishments for those who need to know how much you have to offer. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s not too early for the sometimes procrastinating Virgo to start making those long-distance travel plans. The sooner you decide where to go, when to go and how to go, the better. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Financial matters once again figure in any major action you might take regarding career, travel or other endeavors. You’ll want a ready reserve to help you back up those moves. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Trying to resolve a problem in a personal relationship could be more difficult than you’d expected. Look into the possibility that someone might be interfering for his or her own reasons. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A project you once rejected might be more attractive because of changes that you feel you can now work with. The weekend is especially favorable to family matters. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good week for the gregarious Goat to enjoy being with people you care for. You might even want to show off those creative kitchen skills you’re so adept at. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A colleague might think your attitude is patronizing or even outright insulting. True. That might be his or her problem. But you might want to take some reassuring steps anyway. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to jettison those old concepts about a family matter you might have been holding on to. This will help make room for a new and more enlightened way of dealing with it. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to analyze a puzzling situation before you try to resolve it. This makes you excel at getting things done the right way.

Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

Much as human hair color can change as a person ages, so, too can a black cat’s fur. Black cats may start to develop gray or white fur as they age, according to the cat information resource Catster. Spending too much time in the sun also may cause the fur to “rust.” This means the pigments lighten, leading to the cat’s fur developing a rusty, red hue.

GENERAL CONTRACTING

HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook from cold to cozy with a few simple DIY solutions. The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can be inadequate in older homes. Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners and professionals alike recommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

LeRoy Hearth & Home (585) 502-0139 leroyhearthandhome.com The San Francisco SPCA says black cats are usually the last to be adopted. They are half as likely to be adopted as other cats. This may be due to misperceptions and superstitions. What’s more, unfortunately, black cats are also the target of malicious behavior around Halloween. Many shelters will not allow adoptions of black cats around Halloween out of fear for the animal’s safety. For those who already own a black cat, it’s adviseable to keep him or her indoors on or near Halloween.

One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

SIMPLE WAYS TO WINTERIZE YOUR HOME Autumn days, particularly late autumn days, can be gusty, and strong winds can cause branches to fall off trees. Branches big and small can cause damage to cars, siding and roofs, and smaller branches can get clogged in gutters, potentially causing gutters to back up and leading to leaky roofs that damage a home’s interior. Take a walk around your property at least once per week during the fall, clearing any fallen limbs and trimming branches that appear one strong gust away from falling off of trees. Remove any branches that are hanging over your home and driveway so they don’t pose a threat to your house or vehicles.

CORRAL ENTRYWAY CLUTTER The entryway to a home is the first thing guests experience when coming inside. It also can be the first place residents drop their belongings after long days at school or work. As a result, entryways can quickly be consumed by clutter. Taming such messes takes a mixture of ingenuity and planning. Homeowners hoping to clear their entryways of clutter must first decide what they want to get out of the space. Will it simply be a decorative spot with photos and other home decor on display? Or is functionality the primary goal? Once that decision has been made, take inventory of which items, such as shoes, keys, umbrellas or coats, need to be in the area, which don’t (i.e., old mail). To make things more organized, rearrange the former while removing the latter. Next it is time to assess storage needs and what’s already available. User-friendly storage items may need to be purchased to make the room as functional as possible. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Our minds are made up!

We are voting for the only experienced judge… because experience matters. Judge Margaret Linsner is our number one choice for County Court Judge. We are proud to say we will be voting for her, and encourage our neighbors all across Livingston County to join us!

Joe and Elaine Bucci We hope voters will think about this — the majority of cases decided in County Court are actually Family Court cases. Margaret has represented hundreds of families and been a voice for children in Family Court for more than two decades, far more than any other candidate. She is sensitive to the issues and clear on the law. This is the experience we need, and experience matters.

Jeff and Theresa Marshall “Here is something people across Livingston County, regardless of political party, can agree on…Margaret Graf Linsner is hands-down the most qualified and most experienced candidate for County Court Judge.”

Dave Coyne Margaret has the integrity, dedication, leadership, impartiality — and experience — to be an exemplary Judge for Livingston County. She does not involve herself with “party politics” and is fair and respectful to everyone. That’s why I’m voting for Judge Margaret Linsner.

Judge Margaret Linsner is Livingston County STRONG! STRONG…in her judicial experience. STRONG…in her work ethic and values. STRONG…in her community involvement. STRONG …in her commitment to the people she has spent decades serving. We are strongly supporting Judge Margaret Linsner for County Court Judge and so should you!”

Peter Vonglis and Theresa Vonglis Pope We have watched Margaret in action; she is fair, honest and respectful to everyone. We don’t belong to the same political party as Margaret, but that does not matter to any of us, and it should not matter to you. We are voting for Margaret because of who she is and how she will contribute to our County as our County Court Judge.

Margaret is a life-long friend and trusted advisor to our entire family. She is honest, hard-working, and ethical — and smart. She is definitely our choice for County Court judge.

Bill and Barb Kurtz Kurtz Farm We have trusted Margaret as our friend and attorney for decades. She is honest, fair and independent and has the integrity to be an exemplary County Court Judge.

Tom and Debbie Jerris Experience Matters — and there is no one with more experience than Judge Linsner. She supports the 2nd Amendment and our Constitutional rights and has supported the Veterans of our county.

Livingston County voters are facing a choice that we are going to have to live with for the next ten years. For me, the choice is obvious. Judge Linsner knows the job better than any other candidate — she’s the only one with actual judicial experience — plus she is respectful, smart, impartial and honest. What more is there is say?

Volunteers… We Need Your Help! Featured Nonprofit: Light Hill End of Life Care Training

334-2993

533-1404

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver Those who keep track of such things say that about 15 percent of all Google searches are new -- that is, they have never been searched before on Google.

Light Hill in Canandaigua, New York, is looking for volunteers interested in caring for terminally ill residents, their families and loved ones. We provide end of life care training that includes seven classroom sessions (approximately 6 weeks to complete) followed by hands-on “shadowing” prior to caring for our resident guests. Light Hill is a two-bed comfort care home, full of light and positive energy. Our home is an alternative to a nursing home, hospital, or home care. Our primary focus is providing a peaceful quality existence at endof-life guided by the hospice philosophy. Our goal is to support our resident guests as they experience physical, emotional and spiritual changes, as well as support their loved ones. Classes will start mid-October and end before Thanksgiving. If you have a caring heart and are interested in learning more about Light Hill, please contact: Volunteer Coordinator, Crystal Martin, at Lighthillvolco@ gmail.com, 585-393-1311 or 585-734-7651. Interested in being a featured nonprofit? Contact us at Hometown@gvpennysaver.com.

Can Nothing be Done for Severe Back Pain?

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta

---

20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have severe lower back pain and can’t stand up straight or walk very well. I saw a back specialist, and he took X-rays and reviewed an MRI. He informed me nothing could be done for me because I have diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). I would like to know what this is and why nothing can be done for me. -- Anon. ANSWER: DISH is essentially a disease of bone spurs. The ligaments and their attachments to bone themselves become calcified and bonelike. The cause is unknown. Symptoms are commonly back pain (more often, middle or upper back, not the lower back pain you have), but pain also may occur in the neck. Problems with walking are not common, but can happen if a nerve is being compressed. Surgery is not a usual treatment for DISH. It is occasionally necessary if the bone spurs press on nerves or if the bone spurs are so large that they interfere with eating. That doesn’t mean nothing can be done for you. Physical therapy may be very beneficial; judicious pain medication and regular gentle exercise are the other effective treatments. If the difficulty standing straight and walking persist, you should get re-evaluated.

Caring for you and the community since 2001.

DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your take on the benefits versus

190 Washington Ave., Batavia, NY

risks of DMSO? -- W.R.

ANSWER: DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) has only one use approved by the Food and Drug Administration, in people with interstitial cystitis, where it is directly instilled into the bladder. It is also used (off-label, meaning without an official FDA indication) as a recovery treatment when the tube delivering some types of chemotherapy comes out of the vein. DMSO may have a pain-relieving effect, both topically when applied, as well as in the brain, though the mechanism for this is unclear. DMSO is an antioxidant and opens pores in lipid membranes, but again it’s unclear how this relates to its possible effects on people’s symptoms. It is an interesting and difficult-to-study compound. It is exceedingly permeable: Within five minutes of being applied to skin, it is detectable in the blood. It has a distinct flavor and odor that can be noticed after application to the skin, which makes doing a controlled trial difficult; subjects in a study find it very easy to know whether or not they have been given DMSO. It’s estimated that people have spent billions of dollars on DMSO for other conditions, especially arthritis and inflammatory diseases. However, the evidence that it is effective is poor, largely because of the difficulty in doing good studies on this compound, but also because large-scale studies are very expensive and there is little enthusiasm on performing such studies on a cheap compound. The risks appear to be small. Apart from the taste and smell changes, there are rare reports of allergies, discomfort in the bladder after instillation there and possible damage to the eye lens (at least in animals). You didn’t tell me what condition you are considering DMSO for, but except in the case of interstitial cystitis (where there are other therapies more likely to be effective), given uncertain benefits, I don’t recommend DMSO despite the low risk of harm.

St. Agnes Harvest Tastings Offers Flavors and Fun By Amanda Dudek

O

n Saturday, November 9th, novices and connoisseurs alike will revel in the rich and sumptuous flavors of the Finger Lakes region at the St. Agnes School Harvest Tastings and Silent Auction. This annual fundraising event is much anticipated for its variety of culinary delights and for the fun to be had participating in auctions and draws. Held again this year at the historic Avon Inn, St. Agnes Harvest Tastings will be open from 12pm until 3pm to guests 21 and older. “Every year, we gather together to enjoy the area’s best wine, beer, hard cider and delicious food, including everything from desserts to chilis and homemade pastas,” said event cochair Kathryn Boor. “Arts and crafts are also available from local artisans. This is my 10th year helping fellow SAS parents create this event. We have about 20 vendors each year and always add something new.” This year, the Rabbit Room, located in the heart of Honeoye Falls, and Star Cider, located in Canandaigua, will be joining as new tasting participants. Also new to the event are the Avondale Pub and No BS Brewing. Returning favorites include The Cake Place, Shoreacre Wines, and the Beachcomber to name a few. The event typically draws about 200 guests and has been held at Camp Stella Maris and the Lakeville Training Grounds. “Guests come to eat, drink, bid on items in our silent auction and enter our raffles and drawings,” shared Boor. “It is one of the biggest fundraisers for our school.” 2018 was St. Agnes School’s first year holding Harvest Tastings at the beautiful Avon Inn. “Owner Jenn Kraus and her staff were amazing at helping us pull off such a large event,” Boor recalled. “We love being at the Inn. It is absolutely stunning, and many of our guests had never been inside to see all of the renovations.” For only $25, guests are welcome to sip and sample everything vendors have to offer. Upon entering the Avon Inn, guests will be ushered into its elegant ballroom filled with vendors, the tantalizing scent of tasty samples and fabulous auction items. “Our committee really thought outside of the box to offer some unique auction items for our guests,” said Boor. “We even feature experiences, like getting a ride in an Avon PD patrol car, or firetruck as great gifts for children.” Items also include such things as baskets from many local businesses, tickets to a Rochester Broadway Theatre League show, a vacation, jewelry, memorabilia such as a signed Sabres puck, goods and gift certificates from area eateries and services like family photo sessions. “The room A chalkboard topped desk up for auction, comes alive,” donated by Anne Barrett explained Boor.

“Friends and neighbors set the atmosphere buzzing as they move from one booth to the next. Everyone is welcome to participate in the silent auction as well as to purchase tickets for a Chinese auction. The beautiful creations by St. Agnes School Pre-K students are a huge hit every year,” Boor said. “Bidding can get intense. Every year, Mrs. Cindy Zhe bakes a homemade apple pie, and the bidding war commences! It gets crazy and is a lot of fun.” A wine pull will also be offered. Guests will be asked to donate $20 and are guaranteed to walk away with a bottle of wine worth up to $75 dollars, and some bottles come with a gift card, as well. Similarly, a gift card pull will be offered in which guests donate $20 and receive a mystery gift card from such places as Wegmans, Dave & Busters or local businesses like the everpopular Geek Chic Boutique. “Guests and volunteers alike love this event and have so much fun participating,” said Kathryn Boor. “Come get in on the action!” To see the list of participating The beautifully displayed Wine Pull food and drink vendors, visit facebook.com/stagnesavon. To donate items for the silent auction or become a tasting participant and showcase your culinary offerings, contact the school at 585.226.8500 or email stagnes@dor.org.

HALLOWEEN SUPERSTITIONS REVEALED Halloween is steeped in tradition. Halloween season also is a time of year when superstitions take root and add to the spooky and often silly nature of the holiday. Some Halloween traditions can be traced back to the ancient Celts and their belief that spirits of the deceased were able to wander the earth during the time they called Samhain. Costumes were worn so the living could blend in with ghosts, and treats were laid out to appease the spirits. Over the years, additional Halloween superstitions have emerged.

Geico indicates that studies have shown people are limited in the amount of information they can process at any one time. STAY SAFE IN BRIGHT DRIVING CONDITIONS Observe speed limits. When glare is present, slow down and keep more space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. If someone in front of you needs to brake suddenly, the greater distance between vehicles can give you more time to react and avoid accidents.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER Visibility is key in hazardous weather conditions, and keeping the windshield clean is a priority. This means ensuring there is enough windshield wiper fluid in the car and that it is a product that will not freeze. Wiper blades can freeze and crack in the winter. Older blades may be more susceptible to damage. It’s a worthy investment to replace existing wiper blades at the start of each winter. When vehicles are parked, pull the wipers off of the windshield to safeguard them from sticking and cracking.

Thank you to Toyota of Batavia, especially salesperson Christopher Brown, Director of Finance Anthony Gallo, and Sales manager Pat Rapone. Leadership starts from the top down, and it is extremely evident. My 84-year-old mother’s van broke down unexpectedly and she needed something fast without breaking her budget. The quality of empathy, mercy and kindness they showed walking her through the process from start to finish only took a day. They didn’t try to sell her on a car she couldn’t afford. We ended up with a brand new 2019 car, that when I looked at other dealerships were all

Pink Ribbons- breast cancer awareness is much advertised. However, it is worrisome that now women’s annual physicals typically lack a medical breast exam performed anymore by one’s primary medical provider. Annual physicals/wellness appointments need to

My question is simple: why tailgate before passing? Whether in a legal passing zone or illegally over a double solid yellow line, it’s always the same. Someone is right on my bumper! I’m not “jumping” out of your way, if that’s your intention. I won’t speed up to accommodate you, and you won’t bully me into pulling over. I usually drive the speed limit, or maybe 5 mph over the limit, so it’s not like I’m crawling. On a 55-mph road with a sharp curve and the yellow recommended speed is 40, l won’t still do 55 because you are in a hurry. Is your impatience important enough to cause an accident? There are many reasons someone could hit their brakes. Please look further than the tip of your nose or the car’s bumper in front of it. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Bill Semmel & Sue Tillotson Semmel of York were married on October 18, 1969. They’re the proud parents of four children: Julie (Bob), Sean (Shelly), Brian (Laurie) and Kyle (Pia). In addition, they’ve been blessed with eight grandchildren and one great grandson… so far. Congratulations and much love from your family!

We had a small electrical problem at our house. We called the local electric company, and they recommended four electricians. Three of them came to our house and gave estimates. They all seemed eager for the job and told us to contact them. Unfortunately, when we called and then emailed each of them, we received no replies. They ignored our messages and made us wait to see if they would reply to us. It would have been nice and respectful if they could have at least sent us a simple message saying, “Sorry, but I am unable to take this job because my schedule is busy right now.” That is the proper way to do business!

Responding to the comment that a handicapped person should welcome any assistance they are offered, whether requested or not: I am shocked! I am not an object for your pity. I am a person, endowed with the same rights as anyone else. I am quite capable on my own, but if I require assistance, I will ask for it. Touching me or my wheelchair, without my permission, is assault. It is against the law! Before you offer to “help” me, please wait for me to ask. Otherwise, you could find yourself explaining things to a policeman. I repeatedly asked for a VIP Empire Pass at my library, but it’s always out. I have been told a man checked it out in mid-June and still has

priced $5000 higher. I am a person that when I see a business treating people well, I tell others about them.

Thank you to the townships and the state for keeping the sides of the roads mowed. It helps to see deer and wildlife when driving at night and helps deter them from feeding at roadside. And in doing so, prevents deer-to-car accidents. It’s so nice to know our safety and the safety of the wildlife is still being kept in mind

it. Phone calls have not been returned; emails ignored. You may have saved some money, but all you really accomplished is to be known as a patron inconsiderate of others. It’s a privilege offered by NYS and the library system. It’s a shame you feel you’re owed this benefit more than others. You should be ashamed, but I doubt you are. Hoping this message shames you into returning the Pass and apologizing to the librarians who must keep telling other patrons they can’t help them.

Paul K. Jones October 17, 2019 Livonia: On October 17, 2019, at age 83, Paul passed peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family. Predeceased by his parents Everett & Gertrude Jones and brothers Dick and Bruce Jones. Survived by his wife of 63 years Barbara (Farrell) Jones; children, Patty (Dave) Crabb, Dan Jones, Linda (David) Shaw, and Kathy (Brian) Hoyt; grandchildren, Kari (DJ) Polmateer, Courtney (Shawn) Philbin, Matt ( Jessica Badlam) Crabb, Kelly (Mike) West, Chelsea (Matt) Metzger, Michael (Margaret) Crabb, Allison Shaw, Justice Hoyt, Danielle Hoyt, and Garrett Hoyt; great-grandchildren, Quinn, Sophia, Meredith, Beatrice, Jack, Sullivan, and Jovie; brother Gary (Betty Jean) Jones; sisters-in-law June Jones and Marcia Jones; and brotherin-law Bill (Nettie) Farrell. Paul is also survived by many other loving family and friends including nieces, nephews, and cousins. Paul was always busy. He began working on the Jones family farm at the age of 10 and never stopped working hard. Paul loved building and remodeling any and everything! There was never a building that could not be remodeled. Many homes in Lima were built or remodeled by Paul. As a young man, Paul earned his private plane license and enjoyed many a fly-in breakfast. In his later years, Paul enjoyed traveling all over the US. Paul and Barb enjoyed many trips to the New England states to see the colors, visits with friends in the mid-West and their yearly winter trip to their home in Florida. In the past few years, Paul and Barb were able to visit grandchildren in Colorado and California. Sports were always a topic of conversation when you talked with Paul. He played sports as a young man and enjoyed watching sports as he got older. Paul loved watching all his grandchildren play and he was always their number one supporter. Grandchildren visits to Florida often included a MLB spring training game. Paul enjoyed any MLB game but told his grandchildren he especially liked a game that the Yankees lost. No matter where he was, Livonia or Florida, Paul had his woodworking shop all set up. He enjoyed making wooden toys, bowls and any wood project his family wanted. Having two or three of every tool was always a must. When not working in the workshop, Paul was found restoring old tractors. Anytime he spotted a tractor, especially GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

No one had a bigger heart than Paul. He was always available to help any and every one. Service calls on many appliances were made at all times of day and night, a helping hand was leant for any project and money given anonymously for anyone who needed a bit of help. Paul spent many hours working with friends at Vitale Park to create Freedom Point to be sure that it was always in beautiful condition and welcoming to visitors. Paul’s 84 years were full and he thought life could never be better than right here with his family! Everyone looked forward to visiting Paul; you were always guaranteed a huge bowl of warm, buttery popcorn fresh from the popcorn machine. It did not matter if it was after Thanksgiving dinner, a Sunday afternoon football game, or an evening baseball game, popcorn was always ready. Paul loved his wife dearly, along with his son and three daughters with all his heart. But his proudest moments were when he talked about his greatest loves: his 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Each of them provided Paul with entertainment, laughs, extra tight hugs and love beyond measure! Paul’s love for all his family will forever be in our hearts. Paul’s family would like to thank Father William Laird and Charles Gardner for their spiritual support and Laurie for her comforting care. Family and friends called on Monday, October 21st, from 3-7pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 20A, Livonia, NY. Paul’s Funeral Mass was held at 1pm on Tuesday, October 22nd, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 6591 Richmond Mills Road, Rte 20A, Livonia. After Paul’s Mass a luncheon was held at the church, followed by burial at St. Rose Cemetery, Lima, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Paul’s Memory to St. Matthew Catholic Church, PO Box 77, Livonia, NY 14487 or to Livingston County Hospice, 2 Murray Hill Drive, Mt. “There are no hopeless situations; there are only people who have grown hopeless about them....” ~ Clare Boothe Luce Children face countless “hopeless” situations. Tying a shoelace, for example, seems totally impossible to the tiny tot who has not yet mastered the art. Adults, who have gone through this stage themselves, will smile and realize that soon the solution will be found and the “hopeless” situation resolved. The frightening situations that we all must face from time to time may seem to be utterly hopeless. If we despair and stop trying, there is no hope. If we persist, hoping for an answer, our problems will prove to be far from hopeless. You can be sure that your wishes will be followed by making arrangements for your funeral service in advance of need. All details will be handled exactly as you specify. Ask our staff about this.

Removing The Mystery From A Prostate Cancer Diagnosis (NAPS)—According to the American Cancer Society, about one in nine American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. More than 173,000 new diagnoses are expected in the U.S. this year, fortunately, this disease can be treated successfully, especially if caught early. What To Do If you’re 50 or older or have a family history of prostate cancer, you should speak to your doctor about whether screening for the disease is right for you. Understanding Prostate Cancer “In the early stages, the most common symptoms of prostate cancer are no symptoms at all,” says Deepak A. Kapoor, M.D., founder of the non-profit, Integrated Medical Foundation, and President of Advanced Urology Centers of New York. There are four stages of prostate cancer. Stage one is diagnosed very early and confined to the prostate. At this stage, the patient is unlikely to be experiencing any symptoms. He may not need treatment beyond regular follow-up blood tests, exams and possibly biopsies. The disease is very treatable. When diagnosed early, the five-year relative survival rate is almost 100 percent. Why Do Some Men Resist Routine Screenings? Many men are embarrassed by the digital rectal exam, concerned about treatment or fear they can’t afford it. Some Answers Testing: Since the 1980s, prostate cancer was being diagnosed with a simple blood test, the PSA. It checks the level of prostate-specific antigen in your blood. In the past, there was controversy about whether having a prostate cancer screening done was beneficial or if it produced more harmful effects due to complications from over-testing. PSA testing was the best thing available for a long time. New tools now exist that provide much more information, giving predictability about the aggressiveness of the cancer and data to help urologists safely manage their patients’ disease. With this information, urologists have higher numbers of appropriate candidates on active surveillance regimens. Using tests such as the Gleason grade score, overall patient health and risk factors—age, race, ethnicity, family history and exposure to Agent Orange—urologists can determine with confidence how aggressive the cancer is and which patients will do well on active surveillance. They will also know which therapy options will be the most optimal for the patient. Making it easier for doctors and their patients to do this testing is the full-range of diagnostic equipment and supplies available through the trusted advisors at Henry Schein Medical, a provider of medical and surgical supplies to health care professionals. Treatments: There are many ways to treat prostate cancer, including hormone therapy, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and cryoablation. The newest innovation being successfully utilized is immunotherapy, which uses your own immune system to identify, target and destroy the cancer cells without harming the body’s own “good cells.” Your doctor can help you decide what’s best for you. It is important to remember that you have the most options available when prostate cancer is diagnosed early and is in the most treatable stage. It is important for men to be vigilant with their routine screenings. Paying: Many insurance policies will pay for diagnostic tests and in some places, such as New York State, there’s no co-pay or co-insurance cost sharing responsibility for diagnostic prostate cancer screenings (with such policies). This puts PSAs on the same level as mammograms, thanks to efforts of advocates and doctors such as those at Advanced Urology Centers of New York, one of the largest urology group practices in the country. Learn More For further facts, visit the American Cancer Society at www.cancer. org and Integrated Medical Foundation (IMF) https://imfcares.org/. IMF provides screenings, education and support services FREE. Learning about prostate cancer early can save your life—and can be easier than many men realize.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Oct. 22, 1975, Air Force Sgt. Leonard Matlovich, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, is given a “general” discharge after publicly declaring his homosexuality. Matlovic’s discharge was later upgraded to “honorable,” and he was buried with full military honors in 1988. * On Oct. 23, 1989, 23 people are killed in a series of explosions sparked by an ethylene leak at a Phillips Petroleum plant in Pasadena, Texas. The blasts were caused by inadequate safety procedures. * On Oct. 27, 2006, the last Ford Taurus rolls off the assembly line in Hapeville, Georgia. The keys to the silver car went to 85-year-old Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A, who added it to his automobile collection.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB

Join the New York State Workforce

Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.
