Many people are familiar with the term “ozone layer.” But some may not know that the Earth’s atmosphere consists of several layers. The lowest layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the troposphere, which the U.S Environmental Protection Agency notes extends from the Earth’s surface to roughly six miles in altitude. The troposphere is where nearly all human activities occur. Even climbers who make it to the peak of Mt. Everest are still in the troposphere, as Everest is less than six miles high. But anyone who has ever boarded a commercial flight has likely left the troposphere and entered the stratosphere, where the majority of commercial airplanes fly. The stratosphere begins at six miles above the Earth’s surface and extends to about 31 miles above the surface of the planet. The EPA notes that most atmospheric ozone is concentrated in a layer in the stratosphere that’s roughly nine to 18 miles above the Earth’s surface. The ozone layer in the Earth’sstratosphereabsorbssome of the sun’s radiation, including the UV and UVB radiation that has been linked to cancer. The third layer of the Earth’s atmosphere is the mesosphere, which extends from 31 miles above the Earth’s surface to roughly 53 miles above the surface of the planet. The height of the next highest layer, the thermosphere, varies due to changes in solar activity. The exosphere, which contains many of the satellites that orbit the Earth, is the outermost layer of the Earth’s atmosphere.

Old batteries should be replaced before winter begins. Without a strong, properly functioning battery, engines cannot turn over. Most batteries last between three and five years. However, extreme cold can compromise batteries, especially those that have been around awhile. Batteries are made up of acid and water, and cold temperatures can freeze the water, thereby affecting battery performance. According to AAA’s Automotive Research Center, at 32 F, the average battery loses 35 percent of its strength.
Newer batteries can be protected by starting the vehicle each day to warm up and recharge the battery. Let the car run for at least 10 minutes if you cannot take an extended drive.
Avocados can promote healthier bones. Because they’re high in vitamin K, a nutrient that is crucial for bone health, avocados may help reduce a person’s risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition characterized by bones becoming fragile and brittle due to loss of tissue. Vitamin K may help improve the intestinal absorption of calcium. That’s a significant benefit, as calcium deficiency has long been associated with a greater risk
osteoporosis.

CougarTech FIRST Robotics Team Pushes the Boundaries of Innovation and Education
BY KAYLEE DUDA, COUGAR TECH MEMBERIn the heart of Honeoye Falls, a group of young minds is blazing a trail of innovation and engineering excellence. e HF-L CougarTech FIRST Robotics Team, a dynamic and dedicated group of students from both RushHenrietta Senior High School and Honeoye Falls-Lima High School, is making waves in the world of robotics and STEM education. eir journey is a testament to the power of teamwork, creativity, and perseverance.
Founded by inventor Dean Kamen in 1989, FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology)
Robotics is an international organization that aims to inspire young people to become science and technology leaders. eyarededicatedtofosteringaglobalcommunity including values of teamwork, creativity, and lifelong learning, ensuring every student has the opportunity to become a leader and make a positive impact on our world. e HF-L CougarTech team, under the guidance of dedicated mentors and teachers, fully embraces this mission.
for future careers but also help them develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Giles, the electrical team lead, says, “Robotics helped me gain an interest in something I never knew I enjoyed, electrical. Along with that, it has furthered my experience in STEM and gave me a place to share my interests.”
Beyond engineering, Team 2228 has a vital operations side, focusing on marketing, safety, and finance. ey promote the team’s image, using creativity to create posters and social media content to attract members and support. A safety team ensures the well-being of members and observers through protocols, training, and workspace vigilance. Finally, managing budgets, securing sponsorships, and fundraising falls to the finance team. Each year, they face the challenge of designing a robot that not only fulfills the competition’s tasks but also stands out in terms of innovation and aesthetics. Additionally, this group creates unique team merchandise such as t-shirts and buttons that embody the competition theme, fostering team identity and community engagement.
e HF-L CougarTech team is not content with just building robots; they are also committed to giving back to districts. ey regularly participate in demonstrations and other events - such as parades - to inspire and educate the next generation of innovators. eir impact extends beyond the school walls, making a positive mark on the wider community.
Team 2228 was officially established in 2006 by residential members who wanted to boost STEM engagement among students, giving them more opportunities. Originally, the team represented Honeoye Falls-Lima High School, but in 2009, CougarTech merged with the FRC team from neighboring Rush-Henrietta. Since then, they have proudly represented both schools.
e team competes in the annual FIRST Robotics Competition, where they are challenged to design, build, and program a robot to complete a specific set of tasks. However, their journey goes far beyond building robots: it’s about problem-solving, collaboration, and learning valuable life skills. Over the last few years, CougarTech has won multiple awards at competitions and traveled for competitions, most recently venturing to Cleveland.
Members of the HF-L CougarTech team come from diverse backgrounds and interests, but they all share a passion for science and technology. As they work together on the robot, they learn valuable skills such as mechanical engineering, so ware programming, electrical wiring, and project management. ese skills not only prepare them
Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of parents, teachers, mentors, and sponsors. Mentors help guide participants in the right direction toward success while also allowing collaboration among student members. e HF-L CougarTech team is grateful for the support they receive, which allows them to pursue their dreams and inspire others. ey primarily partner with a 501(c)(3) non-profit - Rochester Community Robotics - which provides tax benefits to both sponsors and individual donors.
As the CougarTech FIRST Robotics team continues to push the boundaries of innovation and education, they remindusthefutureoftechnologyandscienceisincapable hands. eir journey is a testament to the power of passion, collaboration, and dedication, proving that with the right support, young minds can achieve remarkable feats.

Make the most of mulching
Lawns and gardens can often benefit from the laying of mulch. Mulch serves various purposes in lawns and gardens, and many experienced lawn and garden enthusiasts lay mulch to ensure their properties make it through spring, summer and fall unscathed.
First-time homeowners with little or no landscaping experience may not understand the benefits of mulch, which can be used to strengthen soil and protect properties from the elements.
HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOME BAR
Fill it with spirits
No bar is complete without alcohol and mixers. Homeowners can buy the types of spirits they love and complete their bars with the basics for mixing. When stocking a bar, keep in mind that everything does not have to be top-shelf. Vodka, gin, tequila, rum, and whiskey are some of the more popular spirits. Simple syrup, fresh fruit, club soda, cola, and bitters are examples of versatile mixers.
Entertaining guru Martha Stewart says to have enough supplies on hand for guests. Expect each person to have three drinks (requiring three glasses), use a pound of ice, and three cocktail napkins per two-hour party. Don’t forget to also have nonalcoholic items on hand for those who don’t imbibe.

When closing a fireplace for the season, homeowners can benefit from hiring a professional to ensure everything is done correctly and the fireplace will be in top shape and ready to warm everyone up next winter.

DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come.According to the U.S.Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act,which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.

DatafromtheUnitedStatesDepartment of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away.

Marie Chiapperino
September 21, 2023
Lima - Entered into the presence of the Lord on September 21, 2023, at the age of 89. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Elsie Chiapperino, and many loving nieces and nephews, as well as their children and grandchildren. Marie was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Clara Chiapperino, as well as her three siblings – Frank Chiapperino, Dorothy Contino, and Mike Chiapperino.
A resident of Astoria, Queens, New York, from her birth until she moved to Lima, New York, in 1971, Marie cared for her mother until Clara died in 1978. Marie was known and appreciated for her long tenure as director of Wee Care Nursery School in Lima (1971-2012). In this role, she had the pleasure of pouring her life into hundreds of preschoolers, watching them grow into adults, and later greeting their children as students! Wee Care Christmas concerts and graduation ceremonies were annual highlights for parents, the community, and the Lima Baptist Church family. Marie also began serving as part-time secretary at Lima Baptist Church in 1987.She was honored at a memorable appreciation/retirement reception celebrating her 25 years of service in 2012. “Aunt Marie’s” soft spot was young children, beginning with her nieces and nephews, who have fond memories of quality time with her. ey fondly remember the “radio shows”she hosted and produced with them on her reel-to-reel tape recorder every Christmas. In these MC Productions, she interviewed the children, quizzed them about their lives, invited them to tell jokes, and directed them in singing Christmas carols.More than a half-century later, now these tapes are treasured family heirlooms. In recent years, Marie thoroughly enjoyed getting acquainted with the smallest members of the family, some of her nieces’ and nephews’ grandchildren – both in person and via Facebook interactions.
Family and friends are invited to call Friday,October 6,2023 from 11 a.m. to 1p.m. at the Avon Wesleyan Church, 300 Genesee St., Avon, followed by a celebration of life, following calling hours at 1:00 p.m. Interment North Bloomfield Cemetery.

Place signs around your neighborhood. Be aware that there are ordinances that govern where signage can be located. Check with your town’s municipal office to determine if you need any permits for your signs or the yard sale itself. Make sure signs are legible for drivers and pedestrians alike.
SCHOOLS, PARENTS AND COVID-19
(NAPSI) — K–12 education has gone through a seismic shift in the wake of COVID-19. Parents are finding themselves thrust into homeschooling, and educators, into virtual schooling. EdChoice, a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, teamed up with Morning Consult to release results of a recent poll to find out how it has affected families and teachers.
They found that parents are clearly anxious about sending their kids back to school; 66 percent said they were concerned their children will be exposed to the virus in school. The majority (68%) are also concerned their child is missing important instruction time.
The silver lining to so many states having closed down brick and mortar schools: A solid majority of parents said they felt at least somewhat prepared for the transition to e-learning and distance learning. Parents are slightly more likely to say they felt very or somewhat prepared (70%) than were teachers (67 percent).
There is only one type of school choice program that allows families to receive funds into a flexible spending account to customize an education for their child. They are called education savings accounts, or ESAs. And according to EdChoice’s Public Opinion Tracker, 67 percent of Americans support them.
These results are part of a new, larger polling project, the EdChoice Public Opinion Tracker.is new dashboard updates every month with results of public survey questions not only on COVID-19 but also on K–12 education topics such as schooling, testing, spending and school choice.

ALMOST 1/2 OF OUR STUDENTS IN K-6 HAVE NO IDEA WHAT OPERATION E.D.I.T.H. STANDS FOR ! (EXIT DRILLS IN THE HOME)
ey are not participating in this life saving drill because parents are not helping them with it! Seems like their parents don’t want to be bothered with something which might save their child’s life as well as their own!
DON’T LET THIS BE YOU! Practice with your children!!!
Every October the Livonia Fire Department sponsors a HOME FIRE DRILL. is year's drill will be on October 11th, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. We are once again asking all residents of the Livonia Central School District and all local Fire Districts to please participate in this LIFE SAVING DRILL. All area fire sirens will blow at 6:00 p.m. on this date to signal the start of the drill. Livonia's Past Chief Dave Peck states "Every year we hear about families who are seriously injured or killed in a fire because they didn't have an escape plan which they practiced. Don't let this be you! ere are still too many residents who think it can't happen to them. WELL, IT CAN!!!”
You should be prepared by practicing how to get your family out of your home if a fire should occur. If you care about your family you will:
1. Have at least one working smoke detector on each level of your home. Use it as your signal to begin your drill.
2. Test emergency exits. Make sure you and your children can open windows and remove screens and storm windows from inside.
3. Have folding ladders available for second floor escape.
4. Practice using emergency exits in the dark. Keep a flashlight next to every bed.
5. Teach each family member to roll out of bed, crawl to the bedroom door, feel the door to see if it is hot, and stay low in smoke to avoid toxic gases. Crawl quickly to your safest exit.
6. Don't forget to designate a meeting place for your whole family once outside the residence. Make sure everyone knows to get out quickly and go to the meeting place.
7. Never go back inside a smoke filled building for any reason! Once you are out, STAY OUT.
8. In a real emergency, go to your neighbor's house and call 911.
Please assist your children with Operation E.D.I.T.H "IT MAY SAVE THEIR LIFE"

DID YOU KNOW? Strong communities are able to thrive thanks to the efforts of their residents, including those who give up their free time to volunteer with local charitable organizations. Though the impact of volunteers is often seen through the lens of the projects they help to initiate and complete, there’s no denying just how valuable volunteers are from an economic standpoint. In its 2018 “Volunteering in America Report,” AmeriCorps, an organization dedicated to strengthening communities and fostering civic engagement through service and volunteering, reported that Americans volunteered nearly 6.9 billion hours worth an estimated $167 billion in 2017. Volunteering figures to be even more valuable in the months and years ahead as towns, cities and countries look to recover from a global pandemic that claimed millions of lives and devastated economies big and small. As the world attempts to rebuild itself once the pandemic has ended, volunteers can play vital roles in reestablishing their communities. In fact, many people have already made that recognition. According to data from the professional social networking site LinkedIn, the site’s users had added more than 110,00 volunteer activities to their profiles between the early stages of the pandemic in 2020 and the end of summer 2020.

We are putting a healthy and yummy spin on caramel sauce for dipping your apples! We are using dates in this SUPER EASY recipe. Ask an adult to help you make this.
What are dates?
Dates are the fruit of the date palm tree, which is grown in many tropical regions of the world. They are chewy with a sweet flavor and are a good source of fiber, potassium, iron, and antioxidants. Eating dates can help improve digestive health, lower cholesterol levels, reduce inflammation, and support healthy brain function.

Fun Facts
The first cookbook written in English was “The Forme Of Cury,” compiled by chefs of King Richard II in 1390.
1950s: Invention of the caramel apple
A Kraft Foods employee, Dan Walker, was credited with this delicious caramel dunked apple treat.
16 Medjool Dates, pitted
¾ cup unsweetened plant-based milk
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
Add all ingredients (starting with the milk) into a high powered blender or food processor and blend until mixture is smooth and no date chunks are detectable. Add more milk, 1–2 tablespoons at a time, if needed to help the blending process or to thin the caramel to your liking. Use immediately or store in the fridge for later.
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.What Prompted the Discontinuation of Fen-Phen?
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 71-year-old healthy female who has struggled with my weight all my life. In the ‘90s, I thought I had finally found the solution in fen-phen. It was like a miracle! It took all the nagging thoughts of food out of my brain. My question is, with all the drug ads on TV every day blithely showing the many side effects leading up to -- and including -death, why can’t we use fen-phen? I worked in a hospital where a very large number of employees were taking it with great results. I never heard a hint about anything that could affect someone’s health.
Also, I talked to many of the other patients at the doctor’s office where I was receiving it. Everyone was overjoyed with the results. I had no temptations and no constant yammering in my brain to eat something. As I said, it was a miracle. I felt like a normal person. So, why are all of these drug companies allowed to advertise their products, but one drug that truly worked had to get snatched away from us? -- M.H.
ANSWER: Fen-phen was a combination of fenfluramine and phentermine, which was approved for use in 1986. Approximately 18 million prescriptions were written for this medicine until 1987, when an association was made between the use of fen-phen and valve diseases of the heart. These cases were reported with fenfluramine or with the related dexfenfluramine alone, but never with phentermine alone. (Phentermine remains on the market.) Approximately 150 cases were reported.
Subsequent studies estimated that seven out of 10,000 people who took fenfluramine or fen-phen for less than four months developed valve disease, while 35 in 10,000 people who took fenfluramine or fen-phen for more than four months developed valve disease. They were compared to people who either took phentermine alone or did not use a weight-loss medicine.
The U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration determined that the risk of valve disease (some being severe enough to prompt valve replacement surgery) was too high, so the FDA asked manufacturers to remove these drugs from the market. I fully understand your perspective. Some people are willing to take the risk of a side effect because the benefit of the medicine is so great. In my opinion, people should have the option of making their own decision, but in this case, the FDA felt that the risk was too high.
I have not seen a medicine for weight loss as effective as fenphen until recently, when semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, not yet approved for weight loss) became available. Just as you say, many of my patients report that they were able to easily control their eating while on these medicines, and as of the time I am writing, there have not been any serious adverse effects of taking these drugs, although there are plenty of milder effects. However, these medicines only work when you continue to take them, and stopping them generally results in rapid regain of the weight that was lost. It’s important to realize that if you take a weight-loss drug, you’re making a commitment to a long-term treatment.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer
• Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children.
• Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards.
• Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces.
• Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, they’ll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury.

We only know of the name, and yet that doesn’t even to seem to be the truth! Everyone here is a little scared because we don’t know what’s going on and from inside information everyone’s checks have not been cashed for rent. We have no one in the office and no maintenance! There are three communities that this supposed company bought and they too are in arms about the situation. Our grass is getting a little out of hand, and being a disabled community, people are a bit scared, and no one has any answers for us. Please help us!

• Two tips for sewing buttons: First, for pants buttons, use unwaxed dental floss. It’s incredibly strong and can take a lot of abuse. Second, slip a pin between the button and the fabric before sewing on. When you’re finished, remove the pin. e button has some room behind it, and it will last longer.

PAW’S CORNER
How Long Will Dog’s Heatstroke Recovery Take?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Two weeks ago, my Golden Retriever Lollie suffered a heatstroke. I let him outside into the backyard around midmorning. When I checked on him a er about a half hour, he stumbled to me and collapsed. I rushed him to the veterinarian, where he was treated. Lollie is recovering, but I am terrified to let him outside again. Why did he have problems so fast? Will this episode affect his health long-term? -- Greg in Houston
DEAR GREG: I’m glad to hear that Lollie is recovering, because heatstroke can be deadly -- as you know. Your fear is normal, because you’re clearly a caring pet owner, and you don’t want Lollie to be injured again.
at care and attention is perhaps the biggest factor in Lollie recovering fully and having fewer long-term complications from his heatstroke.
e reasons why Lollie suffered heatstroke aren’t as clear, but there are so many factors that could have contributed to it. e morning may have been hotter than usual. Lollie may have had an underlying illness that made it harder for him to withstand the warmer temperature. He might not have drunk as much water as he needed to maintain his internal temperature.
You did all the right things: letting him outside earlier in the day; checking on him periodically; and immediately taking him to the vet as soon as you saw his symptoms were serious.
Keep following the vet’s instructions to support Lollie’s care as he recovers. It may be weeks or months before he can spend the same time in the heat. He’ll get tired more easily, so his daily walks should be kept short. Make sure he’s eating and drinking enough water. All these factors will improve his health for the long term.

DID YOU KNOW? Women spend considerably more time each day than men engaging in various household activities. According to the 2019 “American Time Use Survey” from the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, women spend an average of 2.16 hours each day on household activities, while men spend an average of 1.39 hours on such pursuits. The survey identifies household activities as housework such as interior cleaning and laundry, but also other activities such as managing the household’s finances and preparing food. Women also spend roughly twice as much time as men caring for and helping household members. Such figures may reflect gender roles that date back several decades if not longer, even though family situations have long since changed as more and more women have entered and remained in the workforce. For instance, the BLS survey found that, in 2019, men spent an average of 7.96 hours per day working, while women spent 7.15 hours per day working. Such figures support the notion that many households can share household activities more equitably between spouses.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE
Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday.
