SCIENTIST & MATHEMATICIAN DR. RYAN VOGT GIVES BACK TO HOMETOWN OF WAYLAND BY ELAHA HASHMATULLAH

iving back to the community has been a practice since the dawn of civilization. Many men and women who have gone off to study and work in different cities have eventually come back to their own communities to help them with many different challenges. Dr. Ryan Vogt is one such individual. His rich background in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields and experience in community service is proof that there is nothing more euphoric and fulfilling than giving back to one’s hometown.

Dr. Vogt has already been mentoring several students, mainly in his hometown of Wayland, and he has been loving the process. Dr. Vogt believes that it takes so little to help a person who in turn can become very successful and perhaps change the world. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Owner: Let Cats Roam Freely Outdoors DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Your point about cats being at grave risk outdoors is just silly. Are there some dangers? Sure, there are. Small dogs are subject to the same dangers, as well as all the other animals that live outdoors. Are you suggesting that we should keep all snakes, hedgehogs, frogs, mice and turtles inside at all times because it’s a dangerous world outside? I dare say not! There is always going to be a bigger animal outside. All animals are free. It is us, as humans, who put the boundaries on animals and cage them in. Do you think that cats didn’t exist centuries ago? Of course, they did! How do you think they survived? They learned how to survive. Is it important to help those animals in need of a comforting shelter, good food and lots of love? Yes! But please don’t cage in the freedom they need in order to survive for centuries to come. -Ellen I., via email DEAR ELLEN: Those are ... interesting points. You’re right, I do harp on the importance of keeping cats inside. And for that matter, small and large dogs. And, if they are being kept as pets, snakes, hedgehogs, frogs, mice and turtles. Why? Because it keeps them exponentially safer and healthier. Staying inside reduces the chance of getting ticks and fleas. It keeps them safe from attacks by other domestic animals, coyotes, as well as (in my neck of the woods, New England) packs of wild turkeys. Keeping cats inside protects other wildlife -- cats are hunters, and they love catching songbirds, hedgehogs, snakes, frogs, mice and turtles.

We adopted Boots 2 years ago. He loves his adopted family. He has a huge barn to explore and woods where he can climb trees. He keeps all the mice and squirrels out of the yard. Best of all, he likes looking out the window, watching birds at the feeder. In the house he can lay and sleep anywhere he wants, even in drawers. “I love my family; I am one lucky cat.”
Janine is a 2 year old female who is very shy but loving. She has been with other cats and dogs.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS Racing greyhounds aren’t predators; many just love to chase things. As The Greyhound Project notes, retired racing greyhounds have been trained to chase lures. That love of the chase may lead some to believe greyhounds are natural predators, but that’s not the case. Many greyhounds just love to run, and some retired racing greyhounds really love to run. However, when they’re no longer racing and have fully adapted to a new home, many greyhounds become disinterested in chasing.

The Red Cross says pipes that freeze most frequently include pipes in unheated areas, such as basements, attics, garages, and crawl spaces. Close vents to the outside in areas like attics and basements to limit the amount of cold air that gets indoors. Think about insulating unheated areas, as well as using pipe sleeves, heat tape or wraps on exposed pipes.

PREPARE YOUR LAWN & GARDEN FOR WINTER
PLUMBING
Mulch leaves. Falling leaves are a telltale sign that winter is coming. In lieu of raking leaves as they begin to fall, homeowners can mulch them into their lawns. Scotts®, an industry leader in lawn care, notes that mulching leaves is a great way for homeowners to recycle a natural resource and enrich the soil of their lawns. While it might not be possible to mulch fallen leaves in late autumn when they begin to fall en masse, doing so in the early stages of fall should be possible so long as the lawn is not being suffocated. Scotts® recommends mulching the leaves to dime-size pieces to a point where half an inch of grass can be seen through the mulched leaf layer.

MAKE BEDROOMS MORE CONDUCIVE TO SLEEP Set the right temperature. The NSF notes that research indicates a bedroom temperature of roughly 65 F makes for the best sleep. Human beings’ body temperatures rise and fall throughout the day, reaching their lowest level around 5 a.m. each day before slowly climbing as morning begins. A room that is too warm overnight may interfere with this natural dip, leading to restlessness. If necessary, install a programmable thermostat in the bedroom so the temperature in the room remains steady and in line with your body’s natural temperature fluctuations.

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY
POLL
Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

FINANCING FUNERALS According to Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $10,000. It can be easy to overlook planning for such a large expense, and many people may think their funeral costs will be covered by their life insurance policies. However, that isn’t always the case and certain complications can arise. The funeral planning information guide Funeral Basics states that sometimes insurance policies become invalid if payments have not been made. Policies may have liens on them, or some named beneficiaries may no longer be alive. This can stall the process as issues are worked through. In addition, it can sometimes take between six and eight weeks for beneficiaries to receive life insurance policy payouts. Since many funerals take place within a week of a person’s death, it’s unlikely that surviving family members will be able to finance funerals with life insurance payouts. In addition, some policies may not be assignable, which means the benefits cannot be assigned to go to a third party who will file the claim for you (i.e., the funeral home or an assignment company with which the funeral home partners). It’s important to determine if an existing policy is assignable and to take appropriate measures if it is not. Individuals may want to consider burial insurance or preneed funeral insurance. Another option is to use preplanning services, which allow people to prepay for funeral expenses and make planning decisions regarding the services and burial so that family members will not be tasked with financing and/or planning a funeral during a difficult time in their lives.
David K. Johnson October 1, 2021 Geneseo: At age 60, David passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at his home in Geneseo on Friday, October 1, 2021. He was born in Virginia, Minnesota to Wallace and Arlene Johnson where he graduated from Biwabik High School. David received his B.S. in Chemistry from Hamline University and then obtained his Ph.D. in organic chemistry at Montana State University. He spent 30 years teaching and mentoring hundreds of students as an organic chemistry professor at SUNY Geneseo. He loved developing long-lasting relationships with many of his students over the years. David enjoyed many things in life. He grew up in Northern Minnesota where he spent most of his time outdoors. This continued into early adulthood in Montana where he developed interests in hiking, skiing, and cycling. As an adult, he continued to value spending time in nature, especially in Stonybrook and Letchworth State Parks. He also enjoyed his tennis club in Geneseo, spending many hours on the courts each week. His greatest passion, however, was his family. He was actively involved in his childrens’ lives; nothing brought more joy to David than their successes and accomplishments. Survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Andrea Johnson, his children, Samuel and Lydia Johnson; his parents, Wallace and Arlene Johnson; his sister, Judith Stecker; his nieces and nephews, Jenny Cross, Jeremy Stecker, Tanya Rabideaux, Lindsay Northcutt; his mother and fatherin-law, Marvin and Glenda Northcutt, along with his brother and sister-in-law, Marv and Jen Northcutt. He was predeceased by his brother, Doug Johnson. Friends and family called from 4-5:30 PM on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 21 Big Tree Street in Livonia, NY, where David’s memorial service took place immediately following calling hours at 5:30PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either: Doctors without Borders, 40 Rector St., 16th Floor, New York, NY 10006 or to: Geneseo Groveland Food Pantry, 31 Center St, Geneseo, NY 14454. Pastor Michael J. Morrissey October 4, 2021 Livonia, NY: At age 81, Mike passed peacefully on October 4, 2021 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. He was born on July 25, 1940 in Hornell to the late Edward and Alice (West) Morrissey. Survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathleen “Kay” (Karley) Morrissey and children, Timothy (Noreen) Morrissey, John (Gail) Morrissey, and Debra (Paul) Frost; grandchildren, Nora, James, Andrew, Kristi, Karen, Mark, Amy, David, Shari, Matthew, Julie, Jacob, and Joshua; 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Roland (Dee) Morrissey; several nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. Mike was gloriously saved by his Savior, Jesus Christ, in 1966. This single event changed the whole direction of his life. His life now belonged to Jesus and he lived every day to serve his Savior. A short time later he was called into the ministry as a missionary with New Tribes Mission in the jungles of Brazil until 1987. Mike moved his family back to Honeoye, NY in 1985 where he was called to pastor his home church, Faith Bible Church, until 1992. He then started New Hope Fellowship Church where he has led his congregation faithfully until his passing. The countless number of lives he touched with his concern, mixed with humor, is astounding. He did this trusting God alone to use it for his glory. No prior calling hours will be held. A Memorial Service to Celebrate Mike’s Life will be held at 5pm on Friday, October 8th, at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 15 & 20A, Livonia, NY. Interment will be held privately. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Livonia Ambulance, PO Box 8, Livonia, NY 14487. FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza. Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off.
Variants-What We Know: COVID-19 vaccines are effective against severe disease & death from variants of the virus that causes COVID-19, including the Delta Variant • Infections happen in only a small proportion of people who are fully vaccinated, even with the Delta variant. When these infections occur among vaccinated people, they tend to be mild. • If you are fully vaccinated and become infected with the Delta variant, you might be able to spread the virus to others. • People with weakened immune systems, including people who take immunosuppressive medications, may not be protected even if fully vaccinated. - CDC.gov/coronavirus_keythingstoknow – Find a vaccine: www.flcvh.org, https://www.vaccines.gov/ – Questions about COVID-19 Vaccines? NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Here’s a tip for you waist-watchers out there: Wait until Halloween Day to buy the candy. That way the inhouse sweets won’t be haunting you throughout October. -- JoAnn * Now’s the time to install weatherstripping or caulk for fall and winter. To find drafts, try this trick: Light a taper candle and run it very slowly along the cracks of your windows. When you see the flame flicker, that’s where you have a draft leak. * A great use for those old knee-high stockings (no runs!): Stuff with a mix of crystalized kitty litter and scent-boosting beads you can find in the laundry aisle. Stuff these in stinky shoes to freshen and deodorize. The litter wicks away moisture from sweaty feet and deodorizes, and the scent boosters last for a good long while. * “Here is a sewing tip for your column: I prewash fabrics that tend to shrink before I use them to make clothing items. That way, the fit is more accurate.” -- G.V. in Indiana * “Exfoliation can be easy if you already have a bag or jar of Epsom salts. Soak in a warm bath and rub the salts over your skin to gently scrub dead skin away. A little essential oil might help, too!” -- D.D. in Florida * “To keep sauces from splattering and dirtying the inside of your microwave, cover the food with a damp paper towel or a coffee filter.” -- E.C. in Utah * Now you can have your tea and clean something, too. Teabags can be used to clean woodwork. Rub the wood softly with a damp bag. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Just Hang Up! It’s time for us to be rude on the phone. There, I’ve said it. “Seniors are often targeted because they tend to be trusting and polite.” So says the FBI’s website page describing scams aimed at seniors. I’ve thought this for a long time, having done informal polls among friends, but now it’s official. Additionally, says the FBI, we’re targeted because we have savings, own a home and have good credit, which makes us attractive to scammers. We have the money -- they want it. But scammers are tricky. On that FBI page is a video of a former FBI director who, along with his wife, was targeted in a scam. Of all people who should have instantly realized what was going on, he was one. It was his wife, listening in the background, who made the connections. In the end, even after multiple ugly physical threats, the director didn’t cave in. The scammer went to jail, of course. But it points out how vulnerable we often are, especially when faced with sweet-talking scammers who are offering us a lot of money ... and who then switch over to threats if we don’t immediately do as they say and either send them money or give them access to our accounts. Whether it’s a tech support scam (“Your computer has a virus and we can fix it”) or a grandparent scam (“Your grandson is in jail and needs money for bail”) or a lottery scam (“You’ve just won $5 million”), it’s all the same -- a scam. To protect ourselves, we need to hang up the phone instantly when there is a likely scammer on the other end. Yes, when we were growing up, this kind of behavior would have been considered rude. But this is a whole new world, and it’s full of bad people who think we are trusting. We’re not, right? (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Bacteria Are to Blame for Stinky Shoes, Feet
Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology
Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2
Henrietta
---
20 Finn Road, Suite C
DEAR DR. ROACH: My nephew has foot odor. Even after showering, his feet have a bad odor. His shoes smell bad and have to be replaced often. What is the remedy for this problem? -- B.C. ANSWER: Foot odor is caused mostly by bacteria living on your feet. Bacteria thrive in warm and moist environments, so people who sweat a lot from their feet are at high risk. Some people are also colonized with particularly bad bacteria, such as Kytococcus (formerly Micrococcus), Corynebacterium or Dermatophilus. These bacteria do not cause disease, but they break down dead skin cells into unpleasantly smelly chemicals. A careful look at the skin on his feet may reveal small pits in the skin, especially around the heel, after a long day in socks and shoes. Treatment may include disinfecting skin solutions (such as chlorhexidine), antibiotics (topical erythromycin or clindamycin) and keeping the feet as dry as possible. This may require application of antiperspirants to the feet, either regular over-the-counter or prescription varieties. He also should wear lighter, more breathable footwear. Washing (and then drying) the feet several times daily and putting on new socks each time may also help during the treatment phase. Although ultraviolet-light shoe sanitizers exist, I’d recommend getting new footwear while trying to get rid of as much of the bacteria as possible.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES Invest in new cookware. Choose nonstick cookware that will reduce the amount of oil, spray and butter needed to keep foods from sticking. Manufacturers are now touting ceramic cookware, which is free of trace metals or dangerous chemicals that can leach into food from the cooking surface. What’s more, pots and pans don’t contain chemical coatings that can eventually flake off into food.
Now accepting new patients Free exam and X-rays for new patients. Dr. Dan Doaga and Staff are excited to announce our merger with Dr. Belbas’ dental practice. We are pleased to continue your dental care from Dr. John Belbas at his current location, 3513 Thomas Drive, Suite 8, Lakeville. We will have the same staff and some new faces. We wish Dr. Belbas many wonderful years of retirement.

Wren lesson You learn something new every day! Anyway, I did have fun watching the nest-building, even though the wrens never did occupy the nest in the Penny Saver tube. Now, I guess I can take down the note I posted and remove the twigs. I’m an incidental bird watcher, and I appreciate the info. By the way, thanks to all the carriers who avoided the Penny Saver tube!
S E V RA Hurrah for vaccinated healthcare workers! Thank you for getting vaccinated! It means so much to people, and it makes us more comfortable around our doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers. You did the right thing for your community. Kindness does matter I was so sad to hear about the child’s experience with some other children at the park. It’s possible it’s because of the Covid issues, but it’s sad that this happened. Our granddaughter only has one sibling who is much too old to play, so she’s mostly by herself and longs for children around her age with whom to play. Covid has found so many ways to destroy our lives. All this sadness just breaks my heart. I’m sure she will find friends soon as I believe most who live here are quite friendly. Our granddaughter is four, and she doesn’t give up on finding friends. She continues to seek friends when she’s at the parks, so they may meet sometime. Tell your granddaughter that she will make friends and may find a friend or two for life. Happy days are ahead. God Bless!

Awesome Doctor & Techs Words aren’t enough to express thanks and awesome job to the York Animal Hospital. My Doxie,Symon, went paralyzed in the hind quarters. I called the clinic, and we took him on an emergency call. When we arrived, they were ready for him. We had Dr. King. Awesome job, Dr. King! We know it was serious. With her help, advice, and therapy by her and by Symon’s mom, Symon has recovered a lot. He’s now walking and running. This all happened three months ago. What a great job Dr. King and staff--including registration and the check-in lady-did! This could have come out as a sad ending, but it is a happy ending. A huge thanks; you are all so awesome! God bless you all! - Symon’s Mom Good Samaritan On September 20th, I fell outside the Christmas Tree Shop in Henrietta. I would like to thank Dave who got me up and made sure I was all right. Thank you, My Good Samaritan, and may God always be with you. Thank you!
No dogs here! I have lived here for a very short time. I must say that this complex is a very good place to be. Everyone helps each other. There are a few complainers, but thankfully, there aren’t many. The complex manager is very efficient and very helpful. I’m sorry for the people who feel this place is “going to the dogs.” I like that we can meet each other, and we get to go to lunches thanks to the manager. I know that whatever problem I have or anything I may need has always been very quickly taken care of. So keep your complaining to yourself, and let’s all enjoy what we have. Zero, not hero You took yourselves from hero to zero! You aren’t an enemy; you just show you do not care. Any good healthcare worker would not want to hurt a patient in any way. By not getting vaccinated, you are possibly passing Covid on to them. What if you pass Covid to a child, and that child passes away? Are you ok with this? We aren’t! A good healthcare worker would not want this. Perhaps this job isn’t the one for you. Retire or quit please. I do not want unvaccinated people near me at any time!

When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB Inquire about relocation assistance. The Allied survey found that 63 percent of companies offered relocation packages. That’s a considerable perk, as moving can be expensive, especially for adults moving to different parts of the country. Asking about relocation expenses before being offered a job can be tricky, but some companies may mention such packages in their job ads or in their initial meetings with out-of-town candidates.

How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.

THE FLORIDA KEYS DELIVER EXPERIENCES UNLIKE ANYWHERE ELSE (NAPSI)—The most significant worldwide travel trend today is individuals’ desire for experiential travel. Gone is the era of ticking destinations off a “bucket list”; today’s traveler seeks personally transformative encounters with people and places that bring deeper meaning and lifelong memories to a vacation. The Florida Keys & Key West abound in unique experiences that can be found “Only in the Keys” throughout the 125-mile-long island chain. On a drive down the famed Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West you’ll enjoy the distinctive character of individual islands. In Key Largo, take a 90-minute canal cruise on the African Queen, the original vessel from the 1951 film starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. A registered national historic site, the boat looks much as it did on the silver screen. For a “hook and cook” experience in Islamorada, book a charter in the Sportfishing Capital of the World for exhilarating offshore, reef or backcountry fishing—then take your catch to a local restaurant to be prepared according to a signature local recipe. Encounter rescued sea turtles during a behind-the-scenes tour of the planet’s first licensed veterinary hospital for turtles. Located in Marathon, The Turtle Hospital rescues and rehabilitates sick and injured turtles and, whenever possible, releases them back into the ocean. West of Marathon, you’ll drive across the landmark Seven Mile Bridge, one of the world’s longest segmental bridges and the centerpiece of the iconic Florida Keys Overseas Highway. Discover tiny Key deer on Big Pine Key. Endangered Key deer live only in the Lower Keys and can be spotted grazing during early morning and at dusk. The 9,000-acre National Key Deer Refuge was established in 1957 to protect the diminutive deer and other indigenous wildlife. In Key West, explore history with former President Harry Truman and author Ernest Hemingway. The Harry S. Truman Little White House Museum is Florida’s only presidential museum. The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum is where the writer lived and wrote masterpieces in the 1930s. Be sure to pet a descendant of Hemingway’s six-toed cat. Finally, take a selfie just 90 miles from Cuba at Key West’s red, black and yellow Southernmost Point marker that denotes the southernmost land mass in the continental United States.
