DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

MAKE FALL CLEAN-UP ECO-FRIENDLY Rake leaves sensibly Power blowers and mulchers make fast work of leaves, but at the expense of the environment. Gas-powered devices discharge fuel exhaust into the air, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, reap the benefits of peace and quiet as well as exercise from manual raking. While raking, do not feel the need to remove every leaf. A certain amount of organic matter can be beneficial to the soil and even insulate the lawn somewhat. A leftover leaf here or there also may provide protection for insects and small animals. For example, many native bees spend the winter in tunnels in the ground, cracks in mortar, holes in dead wood, or within hollow stems, and they need lawn and garden litter to survive.

BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL CONTRACTORS Inspiration: One oft-overlooked benefit of working with professional contractors is the likelihood that they can draw up ideas for projects that homeowners might otherwise never have thought up on their own. Homeowners without specific ideas in mind can ask contractors to come up with various scenarios before committing to a particular one. Veteran contractors can draw on years of experience to create designs that DIYers might be incapable of coming up with and/or incapable of seeing through to completion.
USES FOR FALLEN LEAVES Create a pile of leaves that will break down and form a crumbly, compost-like material called leaf mold. Even though leaf mold may sound like a blight, it’s actually a good amendment to garden soil, improving its structure and ability to hold water. Leaf mold also attracts beneficial organisms that are vital in healthy soil.

What is mulch? Mulch refers to a material spread around or over a plant to enrich and/or insulate its soil. Many homeowners prefer mulch made of wood chips, which is both effective and readily available. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that organic mulches, which include leaves, wood chips, compost or grass clippings, can be used by homeowners who want to develop eco-friendly landscapes.

PREPARE YOUR LAWN & GARDEN FOR WINTER Mulch leaves. Falling leaves are a telltale sign that winter is coming. In lieu of raking leaves as they begin to fall, homeowners can mulch them into their lawns. Scotts®, an industry leader in lawn care, notes that mulching leaves is a great way for homeowners to recycle a natural resource and enrich the soil of their lawns. While it might not be possible to mulch fallen leaves in late autumn when they begin to fall en masse, doing so in the early stages of fall should be possible so long as the lawn is not being suffocated. Scotts® recommends mulching the leaves to dime-size pieces to a point where half an inch of grass can be seen through the mulched leaf layer.

Install shower heads that earned the WaterSense label. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that showering accounts for nearly 17 percent of home water consumption. For the average family, that translates to almost 1.2 trillion gallons of water each year. Shower heads that have earned the EPA’s WaterSense label have met various conservation criteria established by the EPA. Such shower heads are 20 percent more efficient than the average product that does not have the label. According to the EPA, the average family can save 2,900 gallons of water per year by installing shower heads that have earned the WaterSense label.

DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.

HOLIDAY FUN FACTS About half of all Americans say it doesn’t matter how people greet them around the holidays, with “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays” being non-preferential.
NOW HERE’S A TIP
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne
By JoAnn Derson
* Sociologists have discovered an interesting correlation between economic health and women’s clothing: The worse the economy, the longer women’s skirts become, while the better the economy, the shorter they rise.
* Cookie sheets make great temporary mud and moisture trays for dirty shoes. Stash one at the entry to your home, and you will have less dirt tracked across your floors. * “To make your drains freshsmelling, shake a half-cup of baking soda into the drain. Then pour 2 cups of vinegar that you have warmed on the stove. It will froth and bubble. When it’s done, run the hot water and give it a little scrub.” -- R.C. in Idaho
2 0 2 1
* Blood pressure can be affected by many things, and seeing the doctor is one of them. Instead, request that your blood pressure be taken by a nurse or physician’s assistant. Having a full bladder also can make your pressure reading higher, as can positioning your arm below heart level. * “Keep knitting yarn in check with empty tissue boxes. Set your yarn ball inside the box, and let the string lead out of the top. When not in use, tape the string to the side of the box. Boxes can be stacked and stored for future projects.” -- C.W. in Indiana * “Try this baking tip from my mother: When you have a recipe that calls for dry spices (cinnamon, ginger, ground clove, etc.), cream them with the butter instead of sifting them with the dry ingredients. I do feel like they become infused in the recipe better.” -- A. in Illinois * Visit the dollar store for low-cost toys to use on car or airplane trips. You can get several busy toys and dole them out one at a time. Most parents will attest to what a lifesaver this can be. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Christmas Dinner in a Parking Lot My senior center is going to hold its annual Christmas dinner outdoors in the parking lot. If that doesn’t bring a tear to your eye about the sad state of our world now, nothing will. Santa will arrive by limo behind the fire truck, we’re told, and will make his rounds through the tables set up across the asphalt, little elves at his elbow passing out presents. Students from the high school choir will sing while others from the culinary arts classes (they’ll get extra credit) will hustle the food and drinks outside and serve it. Parking will be wherever you find it around the neighborhood. In the middle of December? In New England? Why, some of us wanted to know, did they not simply use the town’s rec center? That large space would allow the tables to be spread out, with plenty of parking right outside the door. Best of all, it’s indoors where there’s heat. But no, they decreed, the dinner has to be next to the senior center where the kitchen is. A poll of friends indicates a mixed review of this whole idea. One laughed and said no, he absolutely would not be there. Another said he’d been recruited to set up tables and bring the decorated tree outside, hoping he can find an extension cord long enough to plug in the lights. One adventurous soul decided she will indeed be there, wearing a down comforter over her winter coat, which will be over several other layers of clothing, including snow pants. (She’s also bringing a Thermos of hot coffee and is practicing eating while wearing gloves.) One only hopes someone has put the town plow-truck driver on notice. He might be called upon to plow out the parking lot that day before the dinner. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS Confirm vehicle maintenance and inspections. Private individuals and some smaller ridesharing services drive fewer hours per week than many taxi companies. That means personal vehicles may be in better shape than taxis. Drivers must maintain their vehicles and have them inspected according to local regulations. Passengers can ask to see service records and should only accept rides in vehicles that appear to be in good repair.
Road trips can make for great w eekend getaw ays or even more lengthy vacations for those w ho can’t get enough of the open road. But before embarking on any road trips, motorists should replenish their automotive emergency kits so they are fully prepared in the event of an accident or an injury.

CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Drive a vehicle with stop/ start technology. Stop/start systems, in which engines shut off automatically when drivers brake and restart automatically when the driver lifts his or her foot off the brake pedal, can make more efficient use of fuel. Once exclusive to hybrid cars, stop/start technology is now more widely available and can cut back on fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. That’s especially attractive to ecoconscious commuters who live in big cities where stop-andstart traffic is unavoidable. What’s more, many modern air conditioning compressors operate off electricity and not via a car’s engine, meaning vehicles with stop/start technology will stay cool in the summer even when the engine shuts off. MAKE HOLIDAY SHOPPING EXCURSIONS SPECIAL As they fulfill the social obligations of the holiday season, many people find themselves spending less time at home. Consumer Reports notes that individuals spend a great deal of time shopping for gifts come the holiday season. Americans engage in 15 hours of shopping on average, with women spending twice as long as their male counterparts (20 hours versus 10). In addition, the average person devotes 10 or more hours to wrapping and returning gifts. Holiday shopping can monopolize people’s time away from home during the months of November and December, and some shoppers wonder how they become so disconnected from other activities, including family time, that they cherish throughout the rest of the year. One way to tackle holiday shopping without sacrificing time with family and friends is to make holiday shopping a social event. JAMS

THE HISTORY OF BLACK FRIDAY Shopping weekend evolves While Black Friday may have been the catalyst, in recent years shoppers have made the entire weekend of Black Friday a lucrative one for retailers. Many stores now open on Thanksgiving and extend sales through the entire weekend. Small Business Saturday and Sunday promote patronizing mom-and-pop stores. Cyber Monday emerged when online shopping became a popular way to grab deals, and it marks the close of the opening weekend of the holiday shopping season. In 2017, Black Friday weekend attracted 174 million shoppers who spent an average of $335.47, according to the NRF.

Downloading an app only takes a few seconds, and some shoppers are so used to downloading apps they may not realize just what they’re downloading. Before installing an app on your phone, familiarize yourself with the app and what it requests of its user. Some apps ask users for a considerable amount of personal information, even though there is no legitimate reason for them to have that information. If you’re uncomfortable with apps that require you to allow access to your location and other potentially sensitive information, don’t download the app.

Geneseo Boy Scouts to Hold 36th Annual Farm Toy Show & Auction and Honor Doug Harke BY GENESEO TROOP 4070, BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
B
oy Scouts of America Troop 4070 of Geneseo, New York announces the 36th Annual Farm Toy Show and Auction will be held IN PERSON on Friday, December 3 and Saturday, December 4, 2021, at the Willow Creek Venue at 3100 Rochester Road, Lakeville, NY 14480. It is located one mile south of I-390 Exit 9 on Route 15. On Friday, December 3, the auction preview begins at 6PM and the consignment auction begins at 7PM. The Farm Toy Show will be Saturday, December 4, from 9AM to 2PM. Saturday has an early buyer’s option of $12 for 7AM admission or $5 general admission at 9AM onward. Kids 11 and younger are free! Refreshments will be available; face masks required. All proceeds benefit Troop 4070, including troop equipment, travel, camping, and training expenses. The Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction is the largest farm toy show east of Ohio. Vendors from over 35 states and Canada have participated in the event for the last 36 years. Long-time Boy Scout volunteer parent Doug Harke has led every event. Harke’s three sons were members of Troop 4070 when he held a small farm toy swap meeting in 1986. This is his thirty-sixth annual Farm Toy Show and Auction. “This is a family reunion,” says Harke. “We all greet each other by name.” “Our Scouts are the heart of the Farm Toy Show,” says Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout Bryan French. “They set up, unload, and expedite auction items. Our Scouts make it happen.” Geneseo Boy Scouts, Geneseo Kiwanis, and other local volunteers contribute over 500 service hours over the two-day event.
In 2020, Troop 4070 planned to cancel the toy show and auction due to COVID-19. Instead, Harke challenged its parent committee and its auctioneer to migrate the event online. He received over 400 shipments at his home and stored them all in his garage. Harke and the auctioneer photographed, weighed, and measured every item in the auction, and bundled them into lots. Then, the auctioneer set up the bidding platform and handled payments. Finally, the Scouts packaged and shipped items from Doug’s garage to virtual bidders and staffed Doug’s garage during designated pickup hours to thank buyers in person. Incredibly, the Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction was 100% in person in 2019 and 100% virtual in 2020, thanks to Harke’s leadership and commitment. Troop 4070 is humbled and amazed at his undaunted leadership in the Harke has restored a very rare Oliver face of the pandemic. 1850 front-wheel power assist industrial tractor
with a dozer blade as this year’s door prize! Geneseo Boy Scout Troop 4070 thanks Doug for his incredible persistence, the remarkable example of leadership and service he sets for our troop, and his efforts in raising over $200,000 over thirty-five years. The pandemic proved what the Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction truly is: not only an annual event, but also the annual in-person gathering of a community dedicated to farm toys and supporting our troop.
Over his thirty-five years of service, 80 Scouts in our troop have earned the rank of Eagle Scout. At an average of 250 hours per Eagle Scout project, this means that the Farm Toy Show has underwritten over 20,000 hours of community service from our Scouts to our community. In addition to service, the Boy Scouts create a generational legacy. Troop 4070 Eagle Scout Gregory Krapf earned his Eagle Scout rank on September 1, 1975. Eagle Scout Gregory Krapf became Dr. Gregory Krapf and is now the Scoutmaster for his former Scoutmaster’s grandsons! This is the perfect example of the legacy of Scouting and its capacity to impact generations. This is what thirtyfive years of the Farm Toy Show has made possible. Please join us in recognizing Doug Harke’s thirty-five years of service to our Scout Troop, our Geneseo community, and our nationwide Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction community.
The Harke Family at the Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction (L to R): Eagle Scout Doug Harke, Jr., Diana Harke, and Doug Harke.
Harke prints over 1,000 postcard invitations. The Troop applies address labels and stamps during a Troop meeting, and Harke takes an advertisement in Toy Farmer Magazine and Toy Tractor Times Magazine. The Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction went virtual in 2020. This year, Dann Auctioneers of Canandaigua will headline the auction Friday night, continuing a family tradition of over 20 years of service at the Farm Toy Auction. In addition, Harke has restored a very rare Oliver 1850 front-wheel power assist industrial tractor with a dozer blade as this year’s door prize. Although he will tell you he is just another former Scout parent, Doug Harke has been the driving force behind the annual Geneseo Boy Scout Farm Toy Show and Auction for thirty-five years and counting. Leading the event highlights Harke’s passion for farm toys, his nationwide network of farm toy collectors, his local community contacts, his career in education, and his garage to raise goodwill and several thousand dollars for Geneseo Boy Scout Troop 4070 every year, covering expenses for training, camping, food, travel, equipment, and community service activities.

HOW TO KEEP DOGS SAFE AND CONTENT Socialize the pet. Learning how to respond to other dogs and people is an important aspect of canine life. If the pet is to get along with other dogs, it needs to have high exposure to other animals every day and in various scenarios. Socialization can begin as soon as a puppy is immunized and able to venture out with others.

CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Create a scholarship fund. What better way to honor a loved one’s memory than to create an avenue to help others in his or her name? Scholarship funds are an ideal way to honor a deceased loved one. Work with the deceased person’s alma mater to establish a scholarship at that school.
Dorothy M. Wilkins November 11, 2021 Lakeville, NY: It is with great sadness that the family of Dorothy M. Wilkins announces her passing on November 11, 2021 at the age of 95 years. She was born on January 26, 1926 in Jacksonville, FL to the late Walter C. and Amy N. Meyer. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Maurice Dean Wilkins; her brother, Walter “Bus” Meyer; and sister, Betty Jane Lindsey. Survived by her daughter, Diane (Scott Kuchman) Wilkins of Phoenix, AZ; and son, Kurt Wilkins of Lakeville; a niece and nephew, several great-nieces and nephews, cousins, and many dear friends in the Livonia Community. Dorothy was born in Florida but came to Lakeville as an infant, and remained there her entire life. She accomplished and enjoyed much in her long and productive life. Over the years she was involved with several local programs and worked on many committees. She was a lifelong member of the Lakeville United Church of Christ, and tried never to miss a Sunday service. Active in politics for many years with the Livingston County Republican Party, she served as a county committeewoman, campaigning for candidates and encouraging voting. Election day usually found her working the polling places. She became a charter member of the National Warplane Museum where she happily combined her love of aviation and WW2. Here she had the good fortune to fly in many historic aircraft, with her ultimate flight being in a P51 Mustang. In 2016 she was proud and honored to be named Senior Citizen of the Year for the Town of Livonia. She was always an ambitious woman. After her husband died and her children grew up, she opened up a beauty shop in her home as well as working as a hairdresser at Conesus Lake Nursing Home for 24 years before she closed her shop and retired from the profession.
began a new career at the age of 72. She was appointed Livonia Town Historian in 1998 and worked two days a week at the Livonia Historical Museum until her second retirement in November 2017. With her extensive knowledge of hometown history, it was a job she was well-suited for. Researching the area’s bygone days and people was interesting to her and she often wrote stories for local newspapers. She was passionate about history, especially World War 2 history, and kept a collection of books and references in her home that would put most libraries to shame. Dorothy was a beautiful, strong, classy, bright, stubborn, fun-loving, hardworking, fiercely independent and occasionally irreverent woman. As all who knew her would attest, she held fast to her beliefs and always spoke her mind–whether you liked it or not. Her greatest joys in life were her family, her friends, her beloved cats, rich chocolate cake, hot summers, stylish clothes, mashed potatoes with lots of butter, Big Band music, old movies, handsome men, good books, and Johnny Walker, not necessarily all, inclusive and not necessarily in that order. Most of all, she loved Conesus Lake and her home in Lakeville. No matter how far away she traveled, she was always content to return to the community where she spent a lifetime. When you think of Dorothy, celebrate the good memories you have of her. Remember that life is fragile and short and should be lived to the fullest. She will be missed more than any words could express but she will be forever in our hearts. A memorial service and Celebration of Life will be held in the future at the Lakeville United Church of Christ, 5687 Big Tree Rd, Rte 20A, Lakeville, NY. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Livingston County Humane Society, PO Box 233, Avon, NY 14414.

“One of the secrets of a happy life is to forgive everybody everything every night before you go to bed…” ~ from Ann Landers
It’s an imperfect world we all live in and no doubt we all experience situations that give us good cause to feel hurt sometimes very deeply hurt. Somehow we feel that if we “nurse our grudge” and vow never to forgive the one who hurts us, we are somehow getting even. Actually, such repressed hatreds hurt us much more than anyone else. Even if we fail to understand why someone has acted hatefully toward us, if we can forgive them and forget the incident, we have established control and we will be happier for doing so. We serve all faiths, creeds and fraternal orders with perfectly appropriate services. No one is ever turned away for lack of funds.

Men and women who formalize their funeral plans will ensure their wishes are honored. That can give men and women peace of mind and will provide peace of mind to the loved ones they leave behind, who can attend funeral services knowing those services are being conducted in adherence to their loved one’s wishes. Even men and women who discuss their wishes for their funerals with loved ones may not have those wishes honored if they are not put in writing.
Jamie was a wonderful Father, Son, Brother and Friend. His daughters were his world, the light of his life, he took so much pride in them and all their accomplishments. Jamie had a love for working with his hands, building and fixing various things, growing tomatoes, and cooking. S E V RA Borg & Ide Imaging, Brockport I just went for my dreaded mammogram. I always go once a year to get it done. Aleshia was very kind and friendly during the test. She was kind enough to ask me if I was all right as she positioned me for the X-rays. Thank you for all of your hard work! See you next year! Thank you, kind and cheery lady! Thank you to the kind lady who materialized almost out of nowhere on October 22nd, 2021, and offered to help me carry a trunkload of boxes into the Stafford Post Office. Their combined weight came to over 125 pounds, and this angel cheerfully took the majority of them in. As a senior citizen, I was a bit apprehensive about how I was going to manage the task, and she was an answer to a prayer. My gratefulness to Sal, as well, for his efforts in getting them prepared for shipping. I will pay your kindness forward! Thank you from a Vet I'd like to recognize a true patriot and gentleman: Chuck Anderson. I've been going to Anderson's 56 Barber Shop for years. Chuck should be recognized for giving all Vets a free haircut on Veteran's Day. He refused all payments and tips. It sure made the Vets feel appreciated. - Truly Grateful, Woody Help for Afghan families Thank you, Livingston County residents, for your generosity in donating over 1,600 items of toilet paper, paper towels, bodywash, hand and dish soap and $500 in gift cards to Catholic Family Center for Afghan families. Sixty-five Afghan individuals have been welcomed to the Rochester area with another 30 individuals expected soon. CFC refugee staff have been working 6-7 days a week doing everything they can to welcome these families. Thank you for being so supportive.
Had to chuckle I nearly fell off my seat reading the Rant titled “What an Idiot!” First, why wouldn’t Joe Manchin be concerned about coal mining? His state of West Virginia’s livelihood depends on this very thing. He is doing what he feels is best for his state (unlike most governors). I’m glad Biden went to the summit without a deal. What a waste of money! But what really made me chuckle was “the earth is burning up, and we all need to act fast if we want an environment that is safe to live in....” Give me a break; I’m 64 and have heard this my entire life. Seems like every 5 years or so, we only have a few more years! Climate change is phony; it’s political and a ploy to take away our livelihoods, money (taxation), and freedoms. One other thing: let’s impeach all Democrats and most Republicans as well; sure, we can start with Manchin. Trash Talk Whenever I take my walks in rural [local] County, I bring an empty garbage bag to pick up trash. Thought I’d already seen everything in that realm until today when I found a 7-foot-long fluorescent light tube discarded on the side of our road. Thankfully, it was still intact; if it was broken, the toxic mercury inside would’ve been released. That’s bad anywhere, but here that’s extra bad since we live in a watershed. The following information isn’t for the idiotic person responsible. Anyone that thoughtless wouldn’t bother reading this column. For those who do care about proper disposal, here are no-cost options. If you live in one of the four GLOW region counties (Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, Wyoming) you can take florescent tube bulbs to an annual Hazardous Waste Disposal collection. Also, at any time, you can do a drop-off at a Lowe’s store location. If you only have one or two bulbs, you needn’t make prior arrangements. If you have a large quantity of discards, call the store first. Idiotic You are foolish to be speeding through a small subdivision where I live and have two kids. You are gaining nothing and putting lives in danger. I can hear the tires squealing around the bend and the slamming on the brakes, and for what? To get home and turn on your TV? You’re a clown. They should tear up the road so your suspension gets destroyed as punishment for your stupidity.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently read that a large percentage of orthopedic injury to the elderly is directly related to their falling while walking large animals, specifically dogs over 20 pounds. Can you shed light on this please? -- M.F. ANSWER: A March 2019 study in JAMA Surgery did identify dog walking as an increasing cause of fracture. Over 4,000 fractures were identified among dog walkers over 65 in 2017, about triple the number 10 years earlier. However, this wasn’t a large proportion of fractures (only about 2% of total fractures), and the authors did not identify the size of the dog as a risk factor, although they did suggest that clinicians recommend a smaller (and well-trained) dog as a wiser choice. Dogs not only provide some social support, they also encourage exercise. I have had many patients (and a few family members) who have very meaningful connections with their dogs and other animals. In fact, I have seen many people who describe their animal companions as the most important relationship in their lives.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am scheduled for a hip TYPES OF TISSUE YOU CAN DONATE Bone: Doctors used donated bone tissue to treat patients with various diseases and ailments, include orthopedic cancers, spinal injuries, trauma, and damaged joints.
replacement operation because X-rays show joint failure. I am 81 years old and in excellent health. At the moment I do not feel any pain in my hip and am walking very easily. I go swimming three times a week. My question is whether I should agree to this operation as a preventive method to avoid later painful and possibly riskier circumstances because of my age. -- P.H. ANSWER: Hip replacement is indicated in people with severe, debilitating symptoms (such as pain or loss of function) despite conservative management. That doesn’t sound remotely like what you are describing. The findings on the X-ray are less important than your symptoms and function, so I could not recommend a hip replacement for you at this time. Age by itself is not a contraindication for hip replacement should you need one later on. I do understand what you are saying: You are less likely to have a surgical problem being operated on earlier. Some surgeons will operate on people with milder symptoms for this reason. However, you aren’t describing even mild symptoms, hence my recommendation against surgery at this time. ***

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Her Dog Won’t Stop Licking His Paws DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My hound dog “Charlie” licks his front paws nonstop, and sometimes his back paws, every time he lies down. He’ll lick the top of his paws and in between the pads. The skin on top of his paws is starting to get raw. I’ve checked his paws and can’t see any cuts or ticks. Why is he doing this, and how can I stop it? -- Lee F., Ocala, Florida DEAR LEE: Go ahead and schedule an appointment with the veterinarian. Charlie could be licking his paws for a few reasons. One, a physical injury or infestation -which you wisely checked for first. Two, an underlying condition that is causing Charlie discomfort, like a muscle or bone injury, or arthritis. Three, a compulsion to lick his paws. The vet should do some bloodwork to rule out underlying disease. He’ll do some other tests to determine if arthritis is a factor. And he’ll check for allergies, which can cause itchy skin in dogs. Depending on what he finds (or doesn’t find), the vet will help you plan a course of action to stop the licking. It’s important to stay on top of this because dogs who keep licking or biting at the same spot can develop lick granuloma. This is a red patch of skin that is sore and itchy, and a dog’s licking just makes it worse. Eventually, it can turn into a red lump of skin. The granuloma can become infected, requiring antibiotics to resolve. And if the granuloma doesn’t heal or gets really large, it may need to be removed surgically. Work with the vet to find the cause of Charlie’s discomfort and resolve it. Treatment may take a month or more, but it will be worth it.

HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do. HORSESHOE SOLAR ENERGY LLC Livingston and Monroe Counties, New York NOTICE OF SUBMISSION OF 94-c TRANSFER APPLICATION Horseshoe Solar Energy LLC (Applicant or HSS), an affiliate of Invenergy Renewables LLC, is proposing to construct a major solar electric generating facility (Facility) in the Town of Caledonia, Livingston County and the Town of Rush, Monroe County, New York. On July 2, 2020, HSS filed an Application with the New York State Board on Electric Generation Siting and the Environment (Siting Board) in Case 18-F-0633 pursuant to Article 10 of the New York Public Service Law (PSL) for a Certificate of Environmental Compatibility and Public Need (CECPN) authorizing the construction and operation of the Facility (CECPN Application). The CECPN Application was deemed complete on June 30, 2021. This notice is being provided in accordance with Section 900-1.6(c) of the ORES regulations. HSS is transferring its CECPN Application from the Siting Board to the Office of Renewable Energy Siting (ORES) for review pursuant to Section 94-c of the New York State Executive Law (94-c Process). The 94-c Process replaces the review process established by Article 10 for the permitting and siting of renewable energy facilities with a generating capacity of 25 megawatts or more. On or about December 6, 2021, HSS will submit a Transfer Application pursuant to Section 900-3.2 of the ORES regulations seeking a Siting Permit authorizing the construction and operation of the Facility (Transfer Application). Upon submittal of the Transfer Application in accordance with Section 94-c, the Transfer Application will be deemed complete because the Application was deemed complete under Article 10. The proposed Facility is a 180 megawatt (MW) solar photovoltaic electric generation facility comprised of approximately 600,000 solar panels mounted on tracking racks installed on land leased from owners of private property (Facility Site). Facility components will include: the solar panels and panel racks; access roads; fencing and gates; an electricity collection system (ECS) consisting of cables connecting the panels to direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) inverters, communication cables, and supporting electronics; a Collection Substation; an operation and maintenance (O&M) building; and necessary electric interconnection facilities. During construction, the project will require one or more laydown yards. Power from the Facility will be delivered from the Facility’s Collection Substation to a point of interconnection (POI) switchyard for delivery into the electric transmission system operated by Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (d/b/a National Grid) (National Grid). The POI is at National Grid’s 115-kV Golah Substation. The Facility will assist New York State in achieving its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by producing 70% of State’s energy generation from renewable resources, such as solar, by 2030 as set forth in the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act and State Energy Plan. The Applicant has designed the Facility layout to meet applicable standards and to minimize environmental impacts to the maximum extent practicable. The Transfer Application includes the results of extensive studies evaluating the potential impacts of the Facility and proposed methods to avoid, minimize, or mitigate such potential impacts. Upon filing the Transfer Application, the Applicant will provide funding for the creation of a Local Agency Account. The funds will be made available by request to ORES and distributed in accordance with Section 900-5, to local agencies and potential community intervenors in order to help defray costs and expenses, including attorney and consultant fees, associated with participating in the 94-c Process. Any local agency or community intervenor seeking funding from the Local Agency Account must submit a request within thirty (30) days of the date of the filing of the Transfer Application to the Office of Renewable Energy Siting at 99 Washington Avenue, Albany, New York 12231, Attention: Request for Local Agency Account Funding. This Notice and the Transfer Application will be available on the Project-specific website maintained by the Applicant: https://horseshoesolar.invenergy.com/. Copies of the Transfer Application will be provided to those parties entitled to receive copies pursuant to Section 900-1.6(a) and, for availability to the public, to the following: • Caledonia Library 3108 Main St., Caledonia, NY • Caledonia Town Hall, 3109 Main St, Caledonia, NY • Avon Free Library 143, Genesee St., Avon NY • Rush Town Hall, 5977 East Henrietta Road, Rush, New York 14543 • Rush Public Library, 5977 East Henrietta Road, Rush, New

The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence. According to a U.S. Department of Education report, students studying science or math in college have a higher employment rate and salary than other majors after graduation. STEM majors typically earn an average of $15,500 more annually than nonSTEM majors. Engineering and engineering technology tends to pay the most. Women eager to secure competitive, stable and well-paying jobs should carefully consider the opportunities available to them in STEM fields.
