DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

Homeowners who do not intend to stay in their homes much longer may find energy efficient appliances make their homes more attractive to prospective buyers.
Keep mowing, but adjust how you mow. It’s important that homeowners continue to mow their lawns so long as grass is growing. But as fall transitions into winter, lower the blades so the grass is cut shorter while remaining mindful that no blade of grass should ever be trimmed by more than one-third. Lowering the blades will allow more sunlight to reach the grass in the months ahead.

Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn filled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair mixes like Scotts® PatchMaster contain mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well.

585-317-5281 FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees.

IS IT TIME TO UPDATE YOUR HOME’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM? When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-ityourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous.

IS IT TIME TO UPDATE YOUR HOME’S ELECTRICAL SYSTEM? Many older homes are only capable of handling a minimum number of amps, utilizing just a few circuits. But nowadays, when homeowners have far more electronics in their homes than they once did, increased demand on electricity can overload a circuit (all of the outlets linked on one wire). Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety measure to prevent the wire from becoming overheated and causing a fire. However, in some old systems, the circuit breaker will not trip, and this can be problematic. Rewiring a home is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over time, and new wires may be needed. This can be messy and time-consuming, but it’s a small price to pay for safety. When rewiring an electrician also may suggest new outlets. Many home building codes now require outlets with ground fault interruptors, or GFIs, in kitchens, bathrooms and other rooms exposed to moisture. Some older homes may not even have threepronged outlets, so this will necessitate an update as well.

Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses.

“One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states.

Autism Nature Trail Opens at Letchworth BY LOREN PENMAN Photo: The entrance to The Autism Nature Trail (The ANT) at Letchworth State Park!
A
fter seven years of work, The Autism Nature Trail (The ANT) project opened to the public on October 1, 2021. A first-of-its-kind interactive experience in nature, the Trail is designed specifically for those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities, but appropriate for all abilities and ages, located in the #1 state park in the country — Letchworth State Park in Wyoming County. Statistics show that young people with autism spend a staggering amount of time in front of digital screens and that individuals and caregivers often can experience feelings of isolation. The ANT – a series of safe spaces and sensory stations in deep nature and far from the distractions and often overwhelming stimulus of everyday life – will be the “ANT-idote” amongst it all. Activities along the Trail support and build sensory perception and integration, while also providing enjoyable activities for families, school groups and agencies. Eight sensory stations tap into the visitor’s auditory, visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive processing, using nature and natural materials as the tools for skill-building. Both quiet engagement and active exploration are encouraged along The ANT, with added elements such as cuddle swings, gliders and “alone zones” throughout the one-mile loop. Trail markers tell visitors what to expect around each bend, important for creating purposeful consistency and predictability. Dr. Susan Hyman of the Levine Autism Clinic in Rochester called The ANT “The ANT-ithesis of inactivity.” While other entities are making public places accommodating, The Autism Nature Trail is making an accommodating place public. THE INNOVATORS BEHIND THE TRAIL
They convened a consultant team composed of Drs. Amy Laurent and Jacquelyn Fede of Autism Level UP!, Rick Hauser of in. site: architecture, Rusty Keeler of EarthPlay and Zac Rood and Declan Keane of Trowbridge Wolf Michaels Landscape Architects, along with an Advisory Panel of 17 specialists to ensure design elements would provide the appropriate physical and mental benefits to Trail visitors. CALL FOR COMMUNITY SUPPORT The ANT has garnered the support of New York State officials, New York State Parks, Camp Puzzle Peace in Rochester, the Perry Central School District, researchers and tourism and economic development players. It now needs everyone’s support to raise $300,000 in additional private and public dollars to staff and maintain the Trail long-term. The Autism Nature Trail is an inclusive place to thrive, to learn, to grow and to find acceptance and activity for all. To learn more about The ANT, visit autismnaturetrail.com.
Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com: • Someone You Love is Living with Dementia—Now What? Part I
The ANT concept was born back in the summer of 2014, when CoFounders Susan Herrnstein of Perry and Loren Penman of Batavia developed a conceptual model for a nature trail that would serve and benefit the ASD community. They wasted no time getting advice from the top, seeking out Dr. Temple Grandin, a professor and autism spokesperson from Colorado State University and enlisting the help of a third CoFounder, Gail Serventi, retired Clinical Supervisor at the speech and hearing clinic at SUNY Geneseo.

WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES A large part of healthy eating involves choosing the right foods. In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value. Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal.

Pet Sitting Goes Awry DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Last month, I agreed to pet sit for a friend while she and her boyfriend went on vacation. I did this for free because I love pets and want to see if pet sitting as a business is right for me. Bitsy, her 3-year-old cat, was a joy to care for ... the first week. On Monday of the second week, I came to take care of her and Bitsy was laying in the middle of the floor, lethargic. I scooped her up and took her straight to the veterinarian, who thinks she either ingested a toxic houseplant or spoiled food. After fluids and rest at the vet, Bitsy is doing much better. But my friend is angry with me because the vet’s bill is very high. She says it’s my fault that Bitsy got into her houseplant. I followed my friend’s instructions to the letter. Why is it my fault? What should I do? Sign me -- Confused in Denver DEAR CONFUSED: I’m glad Bitsy is doing better. You did the right thing by taking her in for medical care. My advice is to give your friend a little time to process everything that happened. You’ve explained your side already. Hopefully with a little breathing space she will be able to think more clearly and then the two of you can talk and decide what to do. When you open your pet sitting business, take this as a lesson learned. Spell out terms very clearly, stating that the pet owner is responsible for any vet bills incurred due to illness or injury. You can learn much more through groups like Pet Sitter International (https://www. petsit.com/) and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (https://petsitters.org/). Experienced in correcting complex & routine dental problems
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
You’re Never Too Old for HPV Infection ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I read your recent column stating that the HPV vaccine is recommended up to age 45. Are people older than 45 years no longer susceptible to HPV? Asking for a 52-yearold friend (who thinks he’s Wolverine). -- C.F. ANSWER: The comic character Wolverine has a mutant healing ability (that’s how he was able to survive having his bones replaced with adamantium), so he has nothing to worry about. However, non-mutants do have to worry about HPV, which can come from any kind of skin-toskin contact with a person who has HPV. Having the virus often means having warts, but sometimes people can have contagious HPV without having any visible lesion. It’s been estimated that 90% of people with HPV don’t know they have it. People of any age are susceptible to HPV. Most people have been exposed by age 45, which is why the recommendations are the way they are now, but vaccination might make sense in some situations. The clearest example is someone who has had very few sexual partners and is about to become more sexually active (for example, a person recently divorced or widowed). Although the vaccine is not indicated by the Food and Drug Administration in this situation and the person is likely going to have to pay out of pocket, it might still be worth it to get the vaccine to reduce the risk of acquiring a new sexually transmitted HPV infection. I received several letters from people who acquired new genital warts in just this situation who were upset that their doctor did not offer the vaccine. If people have already been exposed to HPV, the vaccine will not harm them. In fact, there is some anecdotal evidence that the vaccine might help people with difficult-to-treat warts by boosting the immune system specifically for HPV.

DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.
INFLAMMATION Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy. LVMMATERIALS LLC INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT GREYHOUNDS Retired racing greyhounds are people-friendly. Despite what their love of running may suggest, retired racing greyhounds are very sociable and typically get along great with both adults and children. Many retired racing greyhounds have been handled by trainers, dog walkers, veterinarians, and others since they were very young. That exposure to humans has made them very sociable.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In the early 1800s, a railroad marketer set up a head-on collision between two trains as a publicity stunt. Some 40,000 people came to watch, and the resulting boiler explosion killed three spectators. But ticket sales soared, and railways everywhere staged train crashes right up until the Great Depression. * One of the weirdest scandals in sports history occurred in 1973 when New York Yankees players Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich decided to trade families -- wives, children, even dogs! After the couples became close friends, Peterson fell in love with Kekich’s wife and vice versa. “It’s a love story. It wasn’t anything dirty,” Peterson told a reporter in 2013. Peterson is still married to the former Mrs. Kekich, but Kekich and the former Mrs. Peterson later split up. * Pepper spray and tear gas are technically classified as chemical weapons and thus are forbidden in warfare. * The human body gives off enough heat in 30 minutes to bring a gallon of water to a boil. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Three ways to use an empty tissue box: 1) Store plastic grocery bags inside; 2) line with a small plastic trash bag and use in your car as a travel trash can; 3) cut out the bottom and use it to disguise an extra toilet tissue roll in your guest bath! * Love oranges? Save the peels to add to your potpourri mix. Remove as much of the pith as possible and cut into strips. Air dry in bright light for about a week. Or you can set the strips on parchment and dry in a partially closed oven set to 175 F for about 45 minutes. Check often.

* “To separate yolks from egg whites, simply crack eggs into a shallow bowl and ‘suck’ the yolk out using an empty plastic water bottle. Squeeze the bottle slightly, then position the mouth of the bottle at the yolk and let go. It will magically slide up into the bottle, leaving the whites behind!” -- T.T. in New York * “When the last serving of jam has been used, I will happily add some oil and vinegar to the jar, along with a few choice spices, then shake. It’s an instant vinaigrette, with a fruity tang.” -C.L. in Tennessee * Keep your jeans or other denim items from fading by soaking them in a solution of cold water and salt (2 tablespoons to a gallon) for about an hour before washing. * “To clean a can opener, get it wet and run a folded paper towel through it while turning the handle. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
It’s Time to Review, Renew Medicare This is that time of year, again, when we need to make decisions about Medicare plans. From Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, we are eligible to compare our coverage between the original Medicare, Advantage plans and the Part D drug plans in open enrollment. They change every year, and we need to know how those changes will impact us. To compare plans, go online to Medicare.gov and click on Preview 2022 Health & Drug Plans. Click on the plans you’d like to see and enter your ZIP code. If you want to compare drug costs, enter that data as well. Have pen and paper on hand and do the math. While it’s said that the average Advantage plan will come down $2, the average drug plan will go up that much. Beware the deductibles. If you have an Advantage plan and think you want to continue it, read the fine print. If you’re used to having benefits for glasses, gym membership or other things, check to be sure you’ll still have those. Compare all of the plans to get what you need. If you have a Part D drug plan and need insulin, be especially careful in selecting your plan. An additional 500 plans will include insulin this year, but again, read the fine print to be sure it’s what you need. A warning: Be sure your drugs are covered. If you have questions you can call 1-800-MEDICARE, 24/7, to get help. You can also seek assistance at the State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) for your state (www.shiphelp.org). If you are low income or have a disability, you might be eligible for the Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs). They help pay for premiums and deductibles, as well as co-payments. Go online to cms.gov and search for Medicare Savings Programs. Click on one of the four categories for more information and income limits. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

S E V RA Many Thanks, Kind Neighbor! Our neighbor, Ralph Burgess, was a Godsend. A few weeks back, my husband and I were struggling to get the mower back on the tractor. It wasn't going well; we are both in our eighties and don't have the strength we once had. He was driving past and saw us struggling with it. He pulled in the driveway and said, "I have a tractor just like this." He had it on in no time and wouldn't accept a cent. We are very thankful neighbors! - Alan & Pat Teresa House gives thanks The Teresa House Board of Directors, Staff & Volunteers would like to thank the Geneseo Garden Club for everything they do to keep Teresa House looking beautiful all season long! Thank you for planting, watering, weeding, mulching, edging, decorating, winterizing and all of the other amazing tasks you accomplish throughout the year. We are blessed to live in such a caring community, and we greatly appreciate your time & talents! Thank you so much for all the good work you do in our community! Geneseo is lucky to have such a wonderful group of gardening enthusiasts!
Suburban Disposal Company Has Great People Recently I had to call Suburban Disposal and inquire as to what the requirements were for pick-up for certain items. Amy was absolutely wonderful! She just didn’t answer my questions, but did so in such a pleasant, friendly manner. It is such a pleasure when a company has such wonderful representatives working for them. A company can be great, but if the people representing them aren’t friendly or pleasant when it comes to communicating with the customers, that can make or break a company. So, hats off to Amy who was delightful to speak to on the phone. Riga Recreation Halloween Parade Many thanks to the following individuals and organizations that made this year’s Riga Recreation-Churchville Lions Halloween Parade a “Ghoulish” success! Sue, Lily, and Addison for filling over 100 goodie bags along with Lion Verna and her Lion Pride for decorating the gazebo and handing out the bags. The Village of Churchville for providing chairs and tables. The Churchville Boy Scout troop along with the Churchville Fire Police for providing safe passage as the tricksters and their parents followed the Churchville Fire Engine through the streets of downtown Churchville to the Village Gazebo where they received bags and then went on to more trick or treating in the village. Thank you so much to whomever paid our dinner bill at the Avon Inn on Wednesday night. It was a special dinner to say goodbye to our brother who is moving to Florida. You made it even more special thanks to your generosity! The Shaw family
Where are we headed? It is being said that sales in some industries are the lowest that at they have been since the Great Recession. The price of gas continues ues to climb; industries continue to suffer from a lack of workers and d a shortshor orttage of supplies; the national debt continues to mount, and infl nflation continues to rise. Cargo ships sit off the US coast, unable to unload their goods. Every day you see the shelves in the stores get barer with no relief in site. I am reminded of stories told by my grandparandparents of the Great Depression, when you were given ration coupons oupons for or food due to its scarcity. How long before we have to ration our food? d?

WHAT IS A TRUST? A trust is a relationship in which another party is given authority to handle a person’s assets for the benefit of that person’s beneficiaries. When making a trust, a person will need to designate someone as a trustee, who will be tasked with distributing assets in accordance to the terms dictated in the trust. There are many types of trusts, and working with an attorney who specializes in estate planning can help men and women determine which type of trust, if any, is best for them.

CREATE AN ENDURING MEMORIAL FOR A LOVED ONE Plant a tree. Trees have long symbolized life and wisdom. Trees can live for dozens of years, growing larger and more vibrant with each year that passes. Planting a tree in a loved one’s name will create a beautiful respite that people can visit and enjoy. A small plaque or another type of sign can feature the name of the person being memorialized.

THE PERFECT SETTING As those planning funerals continue to look for ways to make their funerals and burials more consistent with their own values and preferences, there has been a shift toward selecting more personal settings. Instead of choosing to conduct a funeral in the funeral home, nearly half of those responding to a National Funeral Directors Association survey indicate that they have attended a funeral at a nontraditional location. These include outdoor settings, homes, and other locations to which the deceased enjoyed a particularly emotional or physical attachment. With this and other important matters in mind, the funeral director is prepared to incorporate any and all of a funeral planner’s wishes into a comprehensive plan that best commemorates an individual’s life. Historically, when it came to planning a funeral, we turned to religious traditions. While religion is still an important consideration, more and more people look for secular ways to reflect the person’s complete life. To meet the unique needs and budgets of every family we serve, KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME offers a diverse range of funeral services and products. If you have any questions about our funeral and memorial services, please call (585) 346-5401. We invite you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. DID YOU KNOW?
NOW HIRING Full-Time Cook
Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

SHOW ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS THEY ARE APPRECIATED Business owners and bosses and high-level executives may have their names on placards or monogrammed stationery, but the most successful businesses tend to be those in which the entire staff, from the company president to administrative professionals and so on, works together. Administrative professionals, sometimes referred to as “admins,” handle everything from spreadsheet generation to PowerPoint presentations to preparing schedules. Admins are often the unsung heroes of the workplace, and while they may not receive much fanfare, without the continued efforts of admins, businesses may grind to a halt. In recognition of the roles they play, administrative professionals have been honored during a special week each April for the past 60 years. Called Secretary’s Day upon its inception in 1952, the holiday was later expanded and the name changed to incorporate all of the employees who play pivotal administrative rolls in companies big and small. Administrative professionals do a lot to keep companies afloat and operating smoothly. Supervisors, managers and other higher-ups can take every opportunity to show their appreciation to these hard, yet often unsung, workers.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.
