Christmas is far and away my favorite holiday. I love everything about it, from the event that inspired it, hoping for a white one, to wrapping presents. But mostly I love having family and friends gathered, and sharing traditions. Ellen Hopkins

REVISIT LESSER-KNOWN CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS
Christmas celebrants participate in many different traditions year after year, but some may not fully understand the meaning behind such activities. A Christian holiday, Christmas did not originate with all activities centralized to the church. In fact, many of the traditions people hold dear have pagan roots, which were adapted as Christmas celebrations evolved.
People who hang mistletoe in doorways may be surprised to learn that this tradition dates back to the ancient Druids. The Druids believed mistletoe possessed mystical powers that brought good luck to the household and warded off evil spirits.
Evergreen trees are now associated with Christmas trees, but evergreen boughs were once used to decorate homes during the winter solstice to help people envision the spring to come. Christians often look at evergreen trees as a sign of everlasting life and their relationship with God.
However, while many Christmas traditions continue to be an integral part of annual celebrations, there are some customs that have fallen out of favor. Although these traditions may no longer be widely practiced, anyone can revive them and make them part of their holiday celebrations.
Wassailing is a custom that has ancient origins and is not as popular today as it once was. “Wassail” comes from the Ango-Saxon phrase “waes hael,” which means, “good health.” Wassail is a drink made of mulled ale, spices and other ingredients. To go wassailing meant to travel door-to-doorsingingandofferingadrinkfromawassailbowlinexchange for gifts. Wassailing has been mentioned in certain Christmas carols, including “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.”
Largely an English tradition, wassailing was brought to America by British settlers. January 17th, the old Twelfth Night, is the traditional date for wassailing. Although wassailing has largely fallen by the wayside, increased interest in ales and craft brewing may help revitalize this Christmas tradition, which can inspire community spirit.
Gifting with fruitcake is another tradition that has been much maligned and does not enjoy the same popularity that it once did. Fruitcake is a cake made with chopped candied fruit, nuts and spices and is occasionally soaked in spirits. Fruitcakes have been enjoyed all over the world, but Americans may never have embraced the
tradition as much as those from other countries. However,

MAKE MANAGING WINTER MORE FASHIONABLE
Staying warm is a goal each winter, but that doesn’t mean you have to banish skirts and dresses to the back of your closet. Choose materials that will keep you toasty, including wool, synthetic blends and thick, cotton corduroys. Pair skirts with opaque tights to keep legs warm, and choose stylish calf- or knee-high boots, which are trending right now. Patchwork trends can be seen all over the fall and winter runway shows, and you can experiment with this trend on dresses or skirts to bring a bohemian touch to your winter ensembles.

STORY TIME Originating as a father’s gift to his daughter, the idea came from gluing two skis together to make a wide enough seat for the girl to sit on as her father pulled the skis together to let his daughter surf on the snow. The toy became so popular among his daughter’s friends that demand for the same toy started coming in from people and the man had to license the concept to a manufacturer for mass production. Can you guess who the father was? It was Sherman Poppen, an engineer from Michigan. Sponsored By: Love our weekly puzzles? Get your very own BRAIN GAME Puzzle book! • Head Start is a no cost, federally funded preschool program for income eligible families. The program runs September-August.
• Head Start is a comprehensive child development program with supports for children with disabilities and for families with severe hardships.
• Head Start utilizes the High Scope curriculum which is research-based and child-centered, focusing on child strengths for positive child outcomes and school readiness. Many opportunities for family involvement.
With a lot of parents facing the challenge of keeping housebound kids happy and healthy, this is the perfect time to teach kids the basics of nutrition and eating right. (Family Features)
HEALTHY SNACK TIME TASTE TESTS: Sometimes it feels like kids can snack all day long on easy-to-grab crackers, chips or cookies. Next time they reach into the snack pantry, try incorporating a taste test or food critic activity to encourage something different and more nutritious.
PURPOSEFUL PLAYTIME: Many households have a play kitchen or some kind of play food. Use this as an opportunity to act out how to create a healthy kitchen with activities like making salad, setting the table, peeling bananas and washing dishes. This can help young children become more independent, learn what to expect and grow into little helpers at family mealtime.
SENSORY ACTIVITY: One idea that can work for school and at home is making a sensory box. Simply place a fruit or two inside a tissue box and have children put their hands inside then try to guess which fruit it is by feeling it.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
Many pet owners would never intentionallyharmtheircompanion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food.
Obesity is on the rise among pets.
The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016.
That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago.
The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

THE HISTORY OF BLACK FRIDAY “Black Friday”
The term “black Friday” was originally associated with gold prices and manipulation on the part of speculators Jay Gould and James Fisk. This scandal occurred in September 1869. Commodity prices plummeted 50 percent as a result, and the term “black Friday” was coined to refer to that drop.
The phrase “black Friday” also became famous for all the wrong reasons in 1966. Philadelphia police used it to refer to the Friday traffic jams and crowding in downtown stores from tourists and shoppers who flooded into the city in advance of the Army-Navy football game held the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year. Bigger crowds and rowdiness contributed to long hours and stressful shifts for local police.
Merry Christmas

HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR
Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wood doors and frames.
According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy for alleviating a sticking door is to remove the door and pare down the edges that are rubbing so that the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than might be necessary.
• Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily.
• Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an air conditioning unit.
• Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment.
• Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges.
• Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.
By Sam Mazzotta A er Neutering, Follow the Veterinarian’s Advice
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I believe strongly in natural cures and treatments for people and pets. Recently, my tomcat, Jessup, went to the vet to get xed, to stop my neighbors from complaining about his aggressiveness. I used herbal tinctures and supplements to prevent infection and reduce Jessup’s pain so that he wouldn’t have to take antibiotics and other medications that might harm his health long-term. When I told this to the vet at Jessup’s follow-up, she got really upset and said that if I did that again, she would no longer accept Jessup for treatment. I don’t understand why. Who’s in the right here? -- Sherry L., Los Angeles
DEAR SHERRY: While herbal supplements can be helpful for pets, it’s very important that you share with the veterinarian any current or intended use of these supplements.
For example, some prescribed drugs can interact with supplements and prevent a pet’s liver from properly metabolizing those supplements, causing a dangerous buildup of toxicity.
Vets today will work with pet owners to make sure that prescribed medications don’t interfere with, or interact with, herbal or vitamin supplements. But you have to be upfront and list any and all remedies that you’re giving to your pet. is is especially important with higher-risk procedures and surgeries of any kind, including neutering and spaying. A small pet’s body is especially reactive to pain and infection, and it’s important to keep them comfortable and avoid hampering their body’s ability to heal.
Work with the vet. Follow their advice. Ask questions before a procedure and disclose the supplemental treatment that you’d like to give your pet. Veterinarians will work with you on an e ective treatment plan because, just like you, they want your cat to be healthy and happy.
Readers, how well do you get along with your pet’s veterinarian? Let us know at ask@pawscorner.com.

Updating Your Home’s Electrical System
When it comes time to update the electrical system, it is always best to work with licensed and bonded electricians who have the expertise to work with electrical wiring without getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training.
Electricians likely will recommend upgrading the electrical panel to bring more power from the utility poles into the home. This can include replacing the existing meter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle more power or replacing items that are obsolete or dangerous.
Many older homes are only capable of handling a minimum number of amps, utilizing just a few circuits. But nowadays, when homeowners have far more electronics in their homes than they once did, increased demand on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety measure to prevent the wire from becoming overheated and causing a fire. However, in some old systems, the circuit breaker will not trip, and this can be problematic.
Rewiring a home is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over time, and new wires may be needed. This can be messy and time-consuming, but it’s a small price to pay for safety. When rewiring an electrician also may suggest new outlets. Many home building codes now require
with ground fault
or GFIs, in
and other rooms exposed to moisture. Some
not even have three-pronged
necessitate an update as well.

SIMPLE WAYS TO TRIM YOUR ENERGY BILL THIS WINTER
Lower the water heater temperature. Speaking of water heaters, changing their temperature is another simple way to lower utility costs during the winter. According to Energy.gov, homeowners can save between $12 and $30 for each 10° F reduction in water heater temperature. Many manufacturers set water heaters at 140° F,but setting the heater to 120° F can lead to considerable cost savings without sacrificing comfort. An added and cost-effective benefit to lowering water heater temperature is that a lower temperature slows mineral buildup and corrosion in water heaters and pipes, reducing the likelihood of costlyrepairswhile extending the life of the water heater.

WHEN IT COMES TO WINTER ROOF CHECKUPS, THE ATTIC IS YOUR FRIEND
You know you’re supposed to do it twice a year. But what homeowner relishes the thought of climbing a ladder to check the health of his roof -- as key to a home’s energy efficiency as that roof might be -when the weather is turning sharply colder outside?
Well, as it turns out, while even a quick, eyeball roof-check is recommended this time of year, there’s a fallback option.
You could just check your attic instead.
“Roofs actually create an insulated barrier that helps trap heat inside, and most attic spaces are located right below them,” explains Jason Joplin, program manager of the Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence. “That makes them perfect for spotting potential problem areas and damage without worrying about falling.”

CHRISTMAS TREES BRIGHTEN THE SEASON
Decked out in tinsel, lights, ornaments, and garland, Christmas trees are enduring symbols of the holiday season that boast a rich history. Evergreentreeshavebeenusedtocelebratewinterfestivalsforthousands of years, and eventually became associated with Christianity. Plants and trees that remained green all year held special meaning to ancient peoples, and were purported to keep away illness and evil spirits.
Germans were credited with tying evergreen trees to Christmas celebrations.Inthesixteenthcentury, devoutChristiansbroughtdecorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, is believed to have first added lighted candles to these trees after he was inspired by twinkling stars in the night sky.
While early Americans found Christmas trees an oddity, the tradition, brought over by German settlers, eventually caught on. Today, between 25 and 30 million natural Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year, states the National Christmas Tree Association. Trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada.

Avoiding Holiday Shopping Scams
It’s that time of year again when we do holiday shopping, much of it online. It’s also the time when more scammers come out.
And what is it scammers want most? ey want your personal information so they can turn it into cash and fraudulent purchases.
Here are a few ways to avoid getting scammed online this holiday season:
Beware sales emails that include links, even if the email is from a store you usually use. ieves are very good at making their scam pages look genuine. Instead of clicking a link, open a web browser and go directly to the website itself. Sometimes the email will request that you update your account information. Instead, call the store and ask if they’ve sent out that request.
Beware the tracking emails you get with updates about packages that you’re expecting. Remember that genuine FedEx and UPS emails won’t ask for any personal information from you. Don’t click links. Go directly to the website.
Be careful where you shop online. Check reviews to see what others have to say. Avoid those with few or low ratings.
Consider using Amazon for most of your online purchases and having a Prime membership. Amazon is good at protecting customers when it comes to you receiving damaged items or not receiving any items at all. A Prime membership now costs $139 a year, but it includes free shipping, free movies and videos, and more.
If you are scammed, report it. Call your bank and the police, and then notify the Elder Fraud Hotline at 833-372-8311.
A goal for 2023: Go inside your bank to do your transaction now and then. Yes, it’s easier to just use the drive-up window for deposits and cash withdrawals, but there is a lot to be said for letting them put a face to a name. Once they know you and your banking habits, they’re more able to quickly identify anything that might be wrong.

NOW HERE’S A TIP
By JoAnn Derson
* B.G. in Minnesota writes: “If you want to freshen up drawers with sheets, pillowcases or in your luggage, just place a dryer sheet inside. They really do leave a nice scent, and they are also great for dusting jobs!”
* To control the level of garlic in a recipe, add it at the beginning for a lighter taste and at the end for a stronger taste. To get garlic out of the clove quickly instead of tedious peeling, just smash it and squeeze it out.
* The best cure for a foggy windshield is a chalkboard eraser. You can purchase them at office supply stores. They can be stored easily in your glove box. No window cleaner required for a quick clear windshield, and you can see well after. A clean windshield is a safety issue! -- M.T. in South Carolina
* Fill measuring cups with hot water and empty quickly before measuring sticky substances like honey or peanut butter. It will slide out much easier.
* Banana trick: For faster ripening, leave bunches together and store in a bag. For slower ripening, separate the bananas. They will ripen faster if stored near apples or citrus fruit. Also, remember that just because the outside is getting brown spots, the inside isn’t necessarily going soft.
* Warm up refrigerated baked goods in the microwave, but add a mug of water. It will keep the moisture in the bread. If your bread loaf is going stale, wrap it in foil and pop it in the oven for about 10 minutes at 300 F. It will freshen the bread!

Follow-up Colonoscopy Necessary After Result of Eight Polyps
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 73-year-old male. This year, I had a colonoscopy. They found some small polyps and one larger polyp. All polyps tested negative for cancer. I have had two previous colonoscopies in the past 10 years. Polyps were found in each one. My gastroenterologist said I should have another colonoscopy in one year. There has been no colon cancer in my family. As you age, is it safe to continue with a colonoscopy? I don’t feel safe having one every year. At what age should seniors stop having a colonoscopy? My previous gastroenterologist told me to have one in five years. I do a stool test yearly, given by my primary doctor. -- F.Q.
ANSWER: I read your reports, which showed a total of nine polyps, all “sessile” (flat, which is higher risk for development into cancer than those with a stalk), the largest being 8 mm. The pathology report confirmed these as tubular adenomas, none of which had the worrisome finding of high-grade dysplasia.
The official guidelines of the American College of Gastroenterology recommend a follow-up colonoscopy in three years. I definitely agree with that in people who are otherwise healthy. Colon cancer does definitely run in families, but at least 80% of colon cancer occurs in people with no known family history, meaning you can’t be complacent even if there isn’t any history in your family.
There is no absolute age cut-off for screening colonoscopies: Age 75 might be reasonable in someone who really doesn’t want to have another and whose previous results have all been normal, but I would be unlikely to recommend a screening exam in a person older than 85. People who have serious medical conditions outside the intestinal tract get less benefit from screening.
Age 73 is not so old that I would recommend against screening in otherwise healthy people, and given that you have had eight polyps, I definitely recommend a three-year follow-up. I don’t know why the gastroenterologist said one year, based on the reports you sent me. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

Simple Solutions to Combat Winter Skin Sensitivity
Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized.
Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body.
Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

CLOTHING AND CANCER PREVENTION
Manypeoplechoosetheirclothes basedlargelyontheirownunique fashion sense. But the clothes people wear can serve a greater purpose than broadcasting their sense of style to the world. The Skin Cancer Foundation notes that clothing is the first line of defense against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet, or UV, rays. The right clothing can absorb and block UV radiation and the SCF recommends wearing such attire as part of an effective sun protection regimen. When purchasing clothing, consumers are urged to determine each article’s ultraviolet protection factor, or UPF. The UPF factor indicates what fraction of the sun’s UVA and UVB radiation can penetrate the fabric and reach the skin. Clothing with a UPF of 50 will only allow 1/50th of the sun’s UV radiation to reach the skin. The UPF rating system is relatively new, so consumers in North America may not find UPF ratings listed on the labels of clothing they typically purchase from their favorite retailers. In addition, the sun protective clothing industry in North America is self-regulated, which means some, but not all, manufacturers’ claims regarding the safety of their clothing may be dubious. However, consumers concerned about the safety of the clothing they wear when spending time in the sun can speak with dermatologists about finding clothing manufacturers with strong reputations of producingsunprotectiveclothing that can protect them from the sun’s UV rays.

Local Ceremonies Set for
‘WREATHS ACROSS AMERICA’ Event Honoring Veterans
BY MARK OBBIE
Tnational Wreaths Across America Day.
e Bristol Hills Historical Society registered the two sites as o cial Wreaths Across America participants – Bristol Center Cemetery in the town of Bristol, and Coye Cemetery in South Bristol – and researched the names of the 52 veterans buried in the two cemeteries. e historical society then asked local residents to sponsor the purchase of holiday wreaths, which will be placed on the graves in ceremonies honoring each veteran individually.
e ceremonies, timed to coincide with the national event, will take place at noon on Dec. 17 at Bristol Center Cemetery, 4471 State Route 64, and at 2 p.m. at Coye Cemetery, at the corner of State Route 21 and Bopple Hill Road. e public is encouraged to attend.
e local organizer of the Historical Society’s events, A.J. Magnan, Commander, U.S. Navy (Retired), said the designation of the two cemeteries was a test of the local enthusiasm for the Wreaths Across America program. Local sponsors far exceeded the goal of 52 wreaths, allowing the Historical Society to place wreaths at a third cemetery – Wilder Cemetery, where town co-founder Gamaliel Wilder, a Revolutionary War veteran, is buried.
“We were grati ed by the support local sponsors showed for this project,” Magnan said. “ is will help us expand to more local cemeteries in future years.”
e Wilder Cemetery ceremony, adjacent to Founders Cemetery in South Bristol, at 5903 State Route 64, will take place a er the Coye Cemetery ceremony.
e 30-year-old Wreaths Across America project places millions of wreaths on veterans’ graves in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and overseas. e wreaths are handcra ed in Columbia Falls, Me., of all-American balsam and hand-tied with a red
velvet bow. e event is meant to recall the sacri ces that veterans and their families made by serving far from home during the holiday season.
Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonpro t organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992. Wreaths Across America is on the web at wreathsacrossamerica.org and on Facebook at facebook.com/WAAHQ
e Bristol Hills Historical Society is a 501(c)3 nonpro t organization that was formed in 2020 through the merger of the historical societies of Bristol and South Bristol, N.Y. It cares for two of the region’s most distinctive historic buildings, the 1923 Grange Hall in Bristol Springs and the 1846 Methodist Episcopal Church in Bristol Center, both of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. e society’s website at bristolhillshistory.org and Facebook page at facebook.com/bhhistorical provide calendars of upcoming history presentations and other events, articles on local history, and a convenient way to become an annual donor at levels starting at $15 for individuals and $30 for families.
More information on the local participation in Wreaths Across American can be found at bristolhillshistory.org/honoring-our-veterans.

DID YOU KNOW?
While it might be synonymous with Santa Claus and cold weather, the North Pole is actually much warmer than the South Pole. That’s because the North Pole sits at a lower elevation than the South Pole, and it is located in the middle of an ocean. The South Pole, on the other hand, is located on the continent of Antarctica, which is covered in ice. But Santa fans mulling a trip to the North Pole to visit jolly old St. Nick might want to think otherwise, as temperaturesattheNorthPoleare less than welcoming. Summertime temperatures at the North Pole, for example, hover right at the freezing point. In addition, because of the way Earth rotates, the North Pole experiences just one sunrise and one sunset each year. However, because the sun is always above the horizon in the summer and below the horizon in the winter, the North Pole actually experiences 24 hours of sunlight in summer and zero hours of sunlight in the winter. While children in North America know the North PoleashometoSantaClaus, that’s a relatively recent addition to the legend of Santa Claus, a story that some historians suggest traces its originsallthewaybacktothethird century. Historians credit famed 19th century caricaturist and editorial cartoonist Thomas Nast with being the first to link Santa Claus and his workshop to the North Pole. However, many Nordic countries continue to say Santa Claus lives in their territories.

HOW TO ENJOY A MORE ECO-FRIENDLY WINTER
Install a programmable thermostat. The United States Department of Energy estimates that consumers can save 10 percent on their heating bills by rolling back their thermostat 10 to 15 percent over an eight-hour period. Program your thermostat to keep the heat low while you’re at work or away from home. The latest digital thermostats are both userfriendly and visually appealing when hung on the wall.

HOLIDAY BAKING POINTERS
Baking is a science and the ingredients are used in a ratio to produce a desired chemical reaction while cooking.Do not substitute ingredients, and measure each addition carefully.
Scooping packs flour down — potentially causing you to use more than the recipe calls for. Instead, spoon the flour into your measuring cup gently and use a straight edge to level it out. Even better, use a scale and metric measurements to ensure exact amounts of wet and dry ingredients.
Certainingredients, likebutterandeggs, aretemperature-dependent.Coldbutter in biscuits helps them to rise up flaky and delicious. Eggs brought to room temperature enable the emulsification process to work more readily. The difference in temperature can mean a completely different chemical reaction, so follow the recipe accordingly.
Purchase an oven thermometer, set your oven to 350 F, the standard baking temperature, and see what the thermometer reads. If it is different, adjust cooking times accordingly or have the oven repaired.
Use unsalted butter. Most recipes will call for unsalted butter so you aren’t adding unwanted sodium to the recipe, affecting dough consistency and flavor.

Thank you for returning my wallet.
I want to say thank you to the gentleman who chased me down at Peppermints Restaurant on Tuesday 11/22 to return my wallet. There are some caring and honest people in this world. You saved me some real anxious moments because of the important materials I had.
Super Care at Highland
On 11/11, I was at Highland (6W) for an ailing gallbladder and a drain insertion. After the procedure, an excruciating pain overcame me, with pain so severe I could not sit down, my breathing became labored, and sweat poured from my body. Nurse Kari realized I was in trouble and stayed with me for 2 different meds to be put in my IV until the pain was brought under control. It took a while, but she stayed to ensure that the pain issue was resolved. Justin patiently helped me learn the procedures for caring for the drain system at home and rehearsing with me to be successful. There were many fine nurses who are working diligently to ensure their patients get wonderful care! Many thanks to you all!

It’s Stealing
This is to the people who got far more change back when paying for their meal. The check was around $50. You gave the waitress/server $100. They returned and gave back almost the same as the food bill. Sure the waitress/ server gave the wrong change, mistakes happen, but keeping that money is nothing less than STEALING. The waitress/server had to pay that back from their own money. Keep in mind all the security cameras. Do the right thing and return the money. Then if you return again you would be welcomed for doing the RIGHT THING.
Helium is Limited
Do you know that helium is an element? That means it cannot be manufactured. When the world's supply of helium is depleted, there is no replacement. Did you know MRI machines require helium? Despite this crucial medical need and other industrial needs, people persist in buying helium balloons, thereby promoting the waste of this element. Once introduced into the air, helium cannot be reclaimed. Recently, a local memorial event was publicized on TV news where people released hundreds of helium filled balloons. Not only is this a waste of helium, but the balloons eventually come down, causing litter and a danger to wildlife. There are dozens of respectful ways to honor a death that are not polluting and wasteful.

Carnations
One of the most popular choices for sympathy arrangements, carnations of various colors have different meanings. A red carnation evokes admiration while a pink carnation stands for remembrance. White carnations stand for pure love and innocence.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE
Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike.
The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior.
During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn.
Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measureofgumption.

SMART WAYS TO SAVE FOR YOUR FUTURE
(NAPSI)—According to the Federal Reserve Board, four in 10 adults, if faced with an unexpected expense of $400, would either not be able to cover it or would cover it by selling something or borrowing money. If you’re ever among them, or the 78 percent of American workers who live paycheck to paycheck, you can assist yourself. It can pay to consider these six hints that can help you save:
1. Know your numbers. Keep track of where you spend your money. Include groceries, gas, utilities, entertainment, housing and debts.
2. Make tough choices. Distinguish between things you need (utilities, debt paymentsandrent)andthingsyouwant (vacations, eating out). Subtract what you have to spend on “needs” from your monthly income to determine what you have left for “wants.”
3. Pay yourself first. Have a percentage of each paycheck routed automatically into your savings account.Saving needs to be a priority—consider it a “need.”
4. Expect the unexpected. No matter how well you budget, life may throw the unexpected at you.
5. Keep your stuff in shape. Similarly, keeping major appliances and vehicles in good condition can help you save.
6. Comparison shop for financial products. Take the time to compare insurance policies, bank accounts, savings accounts and credit cards. For instance, there’s the new Unlimited Cash Back Bank Account, by Green Dot Bank. With this account, Green Dot pays its cardholders a 3 percent cash back bonus when they make online or in-app purchases. People spend lots of money online at various websites and buy through apps, such as ride sharing, video streaming and meal delivery services, so getting an additional 3 percent cash back on the things you normally buy anyhow can add up.
What’s more, you can earn 3 percent annual interest when you save your money in the Green Dot Bank HighYield Savings Account (Member FDIC)—higher than what many banks pay in annual interest. It’s free with the app and the interest earned is automatically added to your annual Cash Back Bonus amount.
Tosignupfortheaccountorlearnmore about it, go to the Green Dot app or www.GreenDot.com.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

DID YOU KNOW?
Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fooladvisethatfinanciallysolvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
