ITEMS TO IMPROVE OUTDOOR LIVING SPACES

KEEP GROUNDHOGS OUT OF THE GARDEN Keep groundhogs from burrowing under structures by burying chicken wire a foot underground and bending it at 90-degree angles away from structures or the garden.

Outdoor living spaces are often found in the backyard, but homeowners with bigger front yards than backyards may want to expand or open their porch spaces to create more space outside. Porch swings and rocking chairs provide a great place to relax, and porch spaces are covered, meaning homeowners can continue to enjoy time outside even when it begins to rain.

Home improvement trends come and go. What’s popular among today’s homeowners may feel dated to prospective buyers a decade from now. But solar energy is one home improvement trend that does not figure to go the way of sunken living rooms or popcorn ceilings. According to the Solar Energies Industry Association®, solar energy experienced a compound annual growth rate of more than 60 percent between 2006 and 2016. Solar energy has also done wonders to improve the employment rate. According to the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census, in the United States there were more than 260,000 solar workers in 2016, an increase of 25 percent from the previous year. Things are equally rosy in Canada, where the Government of Canada reports installed capacity for solar thermal power has experienced a compound growth rate of nearly 14 percent since 2004. The use of solar energy is on the rise, and there are many reasons for homeowners to embrace this increasingly popular energy source.

Clean the house. A dirty home that is full of clutter will not make the best impression on appraisers. Dirty homes may be vulnerable to insect infestations that can lead to structural problems with the home. While a dirty home is not necessarily an indicator of infestations or a reflection of a home’s value, a clean home will create a stronger first impression with the appraiser.

Grubs: Grubs like to feast on the roots of grass right below the surface. Michigan State University Extension Turf & Landscape reports that grub damage can appear from March to early May or from mid-September to early November. The lawn and garden experts at GardenTech® note that wilted grass blades are often the first indicator of a grub infestation, which is followed by patches of brown turf and eventually death. Crows, skunks and moles eat grubs, so the sight of them in a lawn could indicate an infestation.

M any people may practice the “ love thy neighbor” creed, but w hen it comes to four-legged w ildlife su ch as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes w hen outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thin ned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people , the National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) has found that many areas of the country continue to report incre ased encounters w ith nuisance w ildlife. “ W hile it can be a unique experience to spot w ildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be disc ouraged from taking up residence,” advises M issy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPM A. “ Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed t o rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, fox es, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected w ith rabies. Because of the risks a ssociated w ith these pests, homeow ners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

Elevator etiquette Please, when using an elevator, don’t stand directly right in front of the door and then try to rush in; there are people inside who need to get out first. This happens so much. I always stand to the side and then look in to see if anyone’s in there and when it’s clear, I get in. It’s not a pretty sight when you’ve got people trying to get in as people are trying to get out. Please use common sense.

Thank you I was in the Wegmans parking lot on Feb 2nd and this gentleman informed me that I had a flat tire. While I was sitting there trying to figure out what I was going to do, he came back with a machine to blow up my tire right there. I’m 88 years old, so this was a blessing from God. Thank you! Winter is so beautiful Winter is so beautiful around here. I’m so glad to see so many people using the Erie Canal towpath and the county park trails in all seasons (we’re from upstate NY after all; if we shelter inside whenever it’s under 40º, we’d miss so much of winter).

Use your phone To the people who complained about a restaurant being closed despite checking their website for the hours of operation, do not blame the restaurant. I’m sure the restaurant had a phone number. Did you think to call the restaurant? Folks, have you noticed people developing a communication phobia to the point of paralysis? With all the technology today there is less communication going on than there was 100 years ago. This couple probably pays over $100 a month to have their cellphone, yet they don’t use it for what it was originally designed to do.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Sudden Foot Pain After a Concert Becomes Debilitating ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter and her friend went to a concert and had to climb stairs. They ended up walking about 2.5 miles in total. After returning home, my daughter had severe pain in both of her feet and was unable to stand or walk on them. She said it felt like someone was crushing them. The pain did not get better, so she went to the emergency room a few days later. A doctor there performed an X-ray and said that the pain was due to bunions, although they did not even look at her feet. She also saw a foot specialist who told her that the diagnosis was neuropathy of the feet and recommended Neurontin for pain. He asked her if she has diabetes, but she does not. They told my daughter that she will have to live in pain for the rest of her life. The doctor recommended getting some tests done on her nerves at the hospital, but she doesn’t have money to pay for these tests. What can be done to help her? How is it possible that the pain started so suddenly? She is in constant pain and is unable to walk. -- K.B. ANSWER: “Neuropathy” is not a diagnosis; it’s a name for a diverse group of diseases that cause damage to the nerves, specifically signifying the nerves in the brain and spinal cord or those outside of them. The recommendation of getting nerve testing done is correct. This does sound like neuropathy from the little bit of information I have, although neuropathies do not typically begin with exercise the way you described. I have seen several cases where muscles have become terribly inflamed and even break down after a period of unusually strenuous exertion (this usually gets better with time), but I would have expected the doctors to make that diagnosis. There is a compressive neuropathy in the foot (tarsal tunnel syndrome) where the nerve is damaged by pressure from muscles, bones and connective tissue, but this happening to both feet at the same time would be surprising. Metabolic neuropathies, like B12 deficiency, cause symptoms on both sides but do not begin suddenly. I’d be worried about her lower spine. I don’t know what your daughter’s financial situation is, whether she might be eligible for Medicaid or the Affordable Care Act, or whether there is a free medical clinic near you. I have had many patients make just enough money that they don’t qualify for Medicaid, but are unable to afford commercial insurance and don’t get it through work *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? While cancer remains the secondleading cause of death in the United States, with only heart disease claiming more lives, there is a silver lining to the cancer cloud. Statistics released by the American Cancer Society show that more people than ever are surviving cancer. The cancer death rate in the United States has dropped by nearly 25 percent since its peak in 1991. Many factors no doubt contribute to the decline in cancer-related deaths, but the decline in smokers may be near the top of that list. In addition, advances in cancer research and treatments and highly effective campaigns educating men, women and children about the dangers of cancer are also contributing to the decline in cancer-related deaths. Simple Solutions to Combat Winter Skin Sensitivity Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

CANNABIS AND CANCER-RELATED PAIN The National Cancer Institute notes that, while more research is necessary, small studies have indicated the potential benefits of cannabis in helping cancer patients overcome the pain associated with their disease. According to the NCI, a small study of 21 patients with chronic pain who combined vaporized cannabis with morphine experienced improved pain relief compared to patients who took only morphine. However, combining vaporized cannabis with oxycodone, a narcotic pain reliever and cough suppressant that is similar to morphine, did not produce significantly greater pain relief. In addition, two small studies indicated that delta-9-THC, the main active cannabinoid in marijuana, helped to relieve pain as well as nausea and vomiting. A second study indicated that delta-9-THC given in doses could provide pain relief similar to that provided by codeine, a pain-relieving drug derived from morphine. The NCI also cites a study that indicated a cannabis plant extract medicine effectively relieved pain when sprayed under the tongue of advanced cancer patients whose pain was not relieved by strong opioids alone. That study also indicated that some patients were able to continue to control their cancer-related pain without needing higher doses of the cannabis spray or higher doses of other pain medications they were taking. Is Pet Sitting A Profitable Career?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m a high school student and I’m thinking about what kind of career I’d like to have after I graduate three years from now. I’m not sure college is for me, and I like being around pets -- my family has two dogs and a cat, and I have a flop-eared rabbit. I’ve heard that pet sitting is a good business to be in. Is this true? Can I do that instead of college? -- Caryn H., Fort Walton Beach, Florida DEAR CARYN: Pet sitting is a huge and growing market, because almost every owner is going to need someone to watch their pet at some point. So, it’s certainly worth considering as a career. You can start your own pet-sitting business or go to work for someone else. This is a job that requires responsibility and self-discipline, because people are entrusting you with their pets. You have to show up at the agreed-upon time, follow the owners’ instructions to the letter, and make sure their pets remain happy and healthy. If dog-walking is part of the job, you’ve got to keep them under control and away from conflicts with other dogs. You’ve got to stay healthy, because a sick day is not an option unless you have someone to cover for you. Start by visiting the websites of two major pet-sitting organizations: Pet Sitters International (petsit.com) and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (petsitters.org). They offer resources, certifications and more. Talk to your parents and your school guidance counselor about your interest. They’ll support you and help you explore this career option. David Riddell: Guiding Venture Compassionate Ministries Towards Community Transformation BY SUZIE WELLS

I

n the heart of Henrietta, NY, David Riddell, Director of Venture Compassionate Ministries (VCM) at Calvary Community Church of the Nazarene, stands as a beacon of hope and compassion for the local community. Riddell sheds light on his inspiring journey, the challenges faced by VCM, and the organization’s unwavering commitment to serving its neighbors. David Riddell’s path to leading Venture Compassionate Ministries is rooted in a deep-seated passion for helping others. With a professional journey spanning 17 years, Riddell has dedicated his efforts to various nonprofit organizations, primarily those with religious affiliations. His educational background in Christian education and recreation management, followed by graduate work in business administration, has equipped him with a diverse skill set essential for leading impactful community organizations. Riddell also serves as Senior Director of Advancement and Communications at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester. The pivotal moment that ignited Riddell’s passion for service occurred during a mission trip to Guatemala at the age of 13. This transformative experience broadened his perspective and fueled his desire to serve individuals and families in need. Over the years, he has actively engaged in compassionate ministry programs and nonprofit work, leading and participating in mission trips to Guatemala. Riddell says his daily inspiration at VCM comes from the unwavering resilience and perseverance of the families they serve. The challenges these individuals face are profound, especially since the pandemic intensified difficulties for many. Equally inspiring, he says, are the dedicated volunteers within VCM who embody the spirit of community service. More than 80 individuals lend their time David Riddell and efforts to VCM’s outreach programs, showing the power of love and community support. Riddell says, “Their commitment to serving others in a nonjudgmental and caring capacity is a testament to the power of love and community support. I am inspired to continue fostering a community where neighbors come together, unconditionally supporting one another at their points of greatest need.” As Director of Venture Compassionate Ministries, Riddell finds great joy in witnessing the positive impact on the faces of the families they serve. Especially poignant was their Christmas food distribution event, where despite challenging weather conditions, volunteers came together to bring holiday cheer to the community. The smiles and expressions of gratitude from the families receiving personalized food boxes were particularly heartwarming, Riddell says, as “connecting with the families and sharing in their joy during a challenging time encapsulates the essence of what we do and reinforces the impact of our efforts.”

volunteer, giving back to the community that supported them during their greatest need. Riddell emphasizes that his core goal is to ensure that every person treated by VCM is recognized for their VCM Food Pantry Stockers worth, beyond being a statistic or a client, “irrespective of their past actions or the challenges they may be facing.” Riddell’s goal is to create opportunities to build genuine connections with families, guiding them towards holistic wellbeing, both physically and spiritually. Venture Compassionate Ministries operates on the principle of “loving our neighbors,” inspired by the biblical commandment to love one’s neighbor as oneself. The organization is committed to walking alongside community members through every phase of life, from newborns to working families to shut-ins, offering a range of outreach programs and services. The needs present today among the families served by VCM are challenging and diverse, from food insecurity, job instability, housing and domestic safety concerns, medical expenses, and a pervasive sense of isolation. The organization navigates these challenges by offering a comprehensive strategy that provides hope, creates opportunities, and builds meaningful partnerships. Venture Compassionate Ministries engages the community through weekly support groups, Divorce Recovery, Embrace Grace, Embrace Life, and addressing essential support for individuals navigating challenging life transitions. The Food Pantry program, their largest initiative, strategically partners with organizations like Foodlink to support those in need. Additional programs, such as their quilting program that creates baby quilts and hats to families at Highland Hospital, Lydia’s Closet (providing free children’s clothing), and special outreach initiatives such as their Easter Hygiene Baskets, Back to School Backpack and School Supplies, diaper and formula distribution, ensure that VCM’s support addresses various aspects of the community’s needs. David Riddell’s leadership at Venture Compassionate Ministries reflects a commitment to fostering a supportive community where love, compassion, and genuine connections prevail. Through VCM’s multifaceted programs and outreach initiatives, Riddell and his team are making a profound impact on the lives of those facing adversity in Henrietta and beyond.

VCM has witnessed an influx of new volunteers, affiliated or unaffiliated with Calvary or Venture. Riddell is inspired that individuals who were once assisted by VCM during the pandemic now

Lois M. Scorsone January 20, 2024 Lois Scorsone, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, sister, niece, cousin and friend, lost her long, hard-fought battle with cancer on January 20, 2024 at age 85.

Life insurance is a product few people want to think about. That’s perfectly understandable, as life insurance forces men and women to consider their own mortality. But life insurance is not something adults should avoid, especially if they have dependents. Many people should consider life insurance when estate planning so they can provide security for their loved ones.

She was born to Philip and Mary Cappadonia, the oldest of three siblings, Philip (Regina), Maryann, and Diane (Larry). She married John Scorsone in 1960 and together had four children, Renee (Chris Miller), John (Angela), Mark (Katie), and Chad (Sarah). She was widowed in 1992. In addition to her siblings and children, she is survived by nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, many relatives and friends.

HOW DO WE KNOW LASIK IS SAFE? (NAPSI)—For those thinking about their vision correction options, the question “Is LASIK safe?” is likely top of mind. To answer, ophthalmologist and chair of the Refractive Surgery Clinical Committee for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, John Vukich, M.D., provides hard data: LASIK has been around for a long time, 20 years, with 19.1 million procedures in the U.S. alone. An enormous amount of research has been conducted: There are more than 7,000 peer-reviewed clinical studies on LASIK performance, safety and outcomes. Based on that science, we know LASIK is very safe and has a less than 1 percent risk of sight-threatening complications. In fact, studies show LASIK is safer than long-term contact lens wear, where the risk of infection is actually pretty high. The patient satisfaction rate with LASIK is more than 96 percent, the highest of any elective medical procedure available today. However, LASIK isn’t for everyone. The only way to know for certain is to have a thorough eye exam with a highly qualified refractive surgeon to find out if you are a good candidate and then decide if it is right for you and your vision.

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner. Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.

DID YOU KNOW? How households earn their income has changed dramatically over the last several decades. According to a Pew Research Centeral analysis of the Decennial Census and American Community Surveys integrated Public Use Microdata Sample files, in 1960 only fathers worked in 70 percent of American households. That figure has dropped in each ensuing decade and by 2012 fathers were the sole earners in just 31 percent of American households. While one in four households in American were dual income households in 1960, by 2012 that figure had risen to 60 percent. While those figures represent dramatic changes, the number of households in which mothers are the sole earners has not changed all that much since 1960. In 1960, mothers were the sole earners in just 2 percent of American households. Fifty-two years later 6 percent of American households featured mothers as the sole earners.
