PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM The Purina Pet Care Center found that overweight pets may live two years less than ideal weight pets. Reduced life span is not the only problem, as carrying extra pounds can contribute to various maladies. These include osteoarthritis and poor joint health, type 2 diabetes, ligament injuries, heart and respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancer.

DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry. Page 4

4 UNIQUE

ways to help

SMALL BUSINESSES

Grow brought to you by:

The role small businesses play in thriving local communities cannot be overstated. Vibrant downtown areas that feature independently owned shopping, dining and entertainment options help distinguish communities from surrounding towns and generate tax revenue that is ultimately funneled back into the community. Only time will tell if the Delta variant puts more small businesses in jeopardy. In the meantime, residents can embrace four unique strategies to help locally owned establishments stay afloat.

1 2

Offer pro bono professional expertise. Successful professionals can help small business owners by offering their services free of charge.

3 4

Support legislation that benefits small businesses. Many small businesses would not have survived the pandemic without government assistance programs.

Help small businesses strengthen their digital presence. Individuals with web design and e-commerce experience can help small businesses revamp their websites and improve their online shopping offerings.

Spread the word. Share stories about positive interactions with a given business using social media platforms.

There’s a great deal individuals can do to support small businesses as they continue to recover from and confront the COVID-19 pandemic.

Even though chimneys do not require daily upkeep, regular maintenance efforts help chimneys operate safely and prevent deaths and injuries while protecting homes from fire. Various problems can arise when chimneys are not well maintained. Such problems include chimney fires, carbon monoxide poisoning and early failure of the chimney and heating sources that the chimney vents. Carbon monoxide can be scary, as it is virtually invisible without a proper detector. The National Vital Statistics System says that, in 2015, 393 deaths resulted from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning in the United States. When carbon monoxide is breathed in, it builds up quickly and combines with the blood, reducing the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. The Canada Safety Council says that body tissue and cells can’t function without oxygen. Chimney fires are another potential byproduct of poor chimney maintenance. The Chimney Safety Institute of America notes that chimneys expel the byproducts of combustion, including smoke, water vapor, gases, unburned wood particles, hydrocarbon, tar fog, and assorted minerals, which can condense on the inside of the chimney flue. The residue, called creosote, is highly combustible. With the right conditions, a chimney fire can occur. Page 8

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapes can save homeowners enough energy to make the projects pay for themselves in less than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertime but drop considerably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

Awe-inspiring colors can make a landscape stand out from surrounding properties. Flowers, bushes and plants may be the first thing homeowners consider when trying to add color to their lawns, but planters can provide a more immediate way to give exterior grounds some color. Bold planters won’t lose their color in a matter of weeks like many flowers do, and homeowners can switch planters so the colors align with the season. For example, some pastel planters can evoke the spirit of spring, while orange planters can be filled with mums to give a landscape an autumnal feel.

ROCKS

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf • 2 cups half-and-half • 4 egg yolks • 3 tablespoons light brown sugar • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter • 1/2 cup sour cream • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar • 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) 1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

If not, think of a better reason to exercise, and it may be the mind over matter you need. Many people find inspiration from family health history risk factors or through the goal of reversing negative health reports from doctors’ offices. These motivating factors will help you press on and push harder.

to infectious mononucleosis (“mono”) at college, and she is coming to spend a week at home. What precautions do we need to take to make sure that the rest of the family remains safe? How long does the virus stay active on surfaces? Also, can she get her flu and COVID shots? -- D.G. ANSWER: Mono is classically caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), but very similar symptoms can be caused by other agents, viruses and even a parasite as well. The virus is transmitted through saliva. The latency period (the time from exposure until the time of symptoms) is longer than you might expect; four to six weeks is typical. Not everybody develops symptoms. Younger children seldom develop symptoms at all when infected, yet they still receive immunity. Unfortunately, they may shed infectious virus particles for months, years or even decades. It is likely that the adults in your family are immune, since 90% of adults have had an EBV infection before. EBV is not a particularly infectious disease, so transmission to family members is uncommon. Still, you should avoid sharing anything that saliva touches, like food, cups or toothbrushes. You don’t need to take special precautions with surfaces. She can get the flu and COVID vaccines as long as she feels well and doesn’t have a fever. ***

DID YOU KNOW? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds. Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators.

Considered to be one of the most romantic countries in the world, France can be an ideal place to participate in Valentine’s Day traditions. The French have an old custom called “une loterie d’amour,” which is a drawing for love. Single men and women of all ages once entered houses that faced one another and took turns calling out to one another to find romantic matches. The men could refuse the match and leave the woman looking for another man to call on. Women who were not paired up would light a bonfire and damn the men who rejected them. The French government eventually banned the practice because of rowdy crowds.

BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues. The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association. Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes. Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels. Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels. Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables, REAL ESTATE ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues. Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels. Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

Although inevitable, death is an emotional subject that’s difficult to discuss. While estate planning can make people uncomfortable, it is an essential part of securing assets for future generations and can make a death in the family easier for loved ones to handle. Estate planning is an umbrella term that refers to a host of things that must be done prior to a person’s death, including writing a will and even making funeral arrangements. Estate planning attempts to eliminate financial uncertainties and maximize the value of an estate, and allows men and women to state their wishes with regard to long-term healthcare and guardianship for their children. When done right, estate planning can prevent family feuds and ensure that the deceased’s estate stays in the hands of family rather than being relegated to the government. Estate planning can be a complex process, so men and women should seek help to ensure the process goes smoothly.

INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS Miles Davis (1926-1991): Compared to other jazz legends, Illinois-born Miles Davis was introduced to music rather late. It wasn’t until Davis was 13 years old that his father introduced him to the trumpet, an introduction that would dramatically alter the course of jazz music. Under the tutelage of local music school director Elwood Buchanan, Davis learned to play the trumpet without vibrato, which Biography.com notes marked a departure from the style of trumpet-playing popular at the time. A true pioneer, Davis is considered one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz and 20th century music.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Are dogs really happy in freezng weather? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: While walking along the local riverway this frosty weekend, I noticed at least three people whose dogs were under-equipped for the cold. One dog wore an insulated vest but no booties; the other two dogs wore no cold protection at all. Why do so many owners ignore their dogs’ comfort and safety this way? -- Harold in New Hampshire DEAR HAROLD: Unfortunately, not every dog owner knows that it’s up to them to protect their pets from cold-weather hazards. Most dogs won’t ask for a sweater vest, and I’ve yet to meet one that didn’t hate booties. I know quite a few dogs that just won’t tolerate booties. Many owners do know their dogs’ limits in the cold, however. They check the temperature before going outside and survey the sidewalk or trail they’re on for hazards like ice chunks, salt or glazing. They limit the time spent outdoors so their dog’s core temperature doesn’t drop. They monitor their dogs to make sure they’re not shivering or in pain, and that their paws aren’t getting frostbitten. And they carefully wipe and check their dogs’ paws as soon as they get back indoors. How do you, an observer, make sure that an owner is following these guidelines? Confronting owners is not advisable. You may be able to strike up a casual conversation on the path, and ask how their dog tolerates the cold weather. But don’t preach at them. In my experience, owners who take the time to walk their dogs on a leash in freezing weather do care about their health and keep an eye on them in the cold.

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

Incessant Dog Barking Our neighbor’s three dogs bark incessantly every time they are outside. The dogs are outside many times during the day, sometimes before 6:30am and even as late as 9:30pm or 10:00pm. We have complained to the neighbors more than once, but they claim they cannot hear the dogs barking. They say they have tried to curb the barking, but don’t want to curb the barking completely because then the dogs would not warn them if there was danger. Other neighbors have also complained and some have mentioned that they may move. We work from home much of the time and it is really hard to concentrate when the dogs are barking incessantly. It is impossible to have a quiet afternoon on our deck or walk our dog in the back yard. We have considered putting up a fence, but that would be quite expensive and likely would not stop the barking. Short of filing a formal complaint with law enforcement, what are we to do? Parking lot repairs Someone needs to do something but who is left to go to when management won’t fix things? A relative who has lived in a elderly apartment complex for years now with huge potholes, one way in and out, and 3/4 of it is horrendous. The sidewalks have been roped off for over a year, leaving occupants with wheelchairs or mobility carts in a dangerous position, unable to navigate it. Nothing has been fixed, other than stones tossed into the holes, which helped for just a few months. I encouraged them to call the housing authority or withhold rent until repairs are made; it is NOT safe. I can only imagine the damage being done to their vehicles. Anyone have other advice? Our seniors deserve better!

Awesome Coworkers I just want to publicly acknowledge what a blessing it is to have colleagues with whom we like to spend our days. Goodness knows, we spend a lot of time at work, so thank goodness for people who help us smile and see the good in life. Loving our new sidewalks Thank you to all the Avon Village employees who worked hard to install the new sidewalks that extend to the end of North Avenue. Each and every day I see folks utilizing them for walking their pets, strolling their children, or getting in a good walk or run. Just a small thing that has improved the quality of living in this great small town.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Take charge of your to-go order: Convenience became the name of the game when ordering food during the pandemic. Curbside pickup service was offered as a safety measure, and many restaurants that never previously offered delivery or takeout started to do so to generate revenue at a time when in-person dining was limited if not disallowed. Some restaurants began offering delivery through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats, and though that may be convenient for diners, restaurants must pay a fee to utilize those apps. In lieu of ordering through a third party delivery service, consumers can take charge of their to-go orders and pick up the food themselves. That saves restaurants the delivery app surcharge, allowing them to increase net profits on the meals they sell.

From Hydropathy to Granula The Legacy of James Caleb Jackson in Dansville BY SUZIE WELLS

B

orn March 28, 1811 in Manlius, NY to James Jackson, a physician and surgeon who served in the War of 1812, and Mary Ann Elderkin Jackson, James Caleb Jackson was “torn between his father’s insistence that he pursue a medical career and that of his mother – that he become a missionary.” Jackson rejected both options and resolved to farm for a living instead (freethought-trail.org). Jackson became involved in the abolitionist movement in Western NY, and he lectured against slavery around the region. By 1847, Jackson’s health was failing, and medicine at the time tended to be “scientifically dubious,” according to Free Thought Trail. Jackson found relief in hydrotherapy, considered a “quack” medicine at the time. Since he found relief through this therapy, regardless of its credibility, Jackson pursued it and began a new career as a hydropathic practitioner. He led a hydropathic facility in Skaneateles, Glen Haven Water Cure, starting in 1847, and earned his medical degree from Central Medical College in Syracuse in 1850. At the time, “Water Cures” focused on the therapeutic power of natural mineral springs sprouting around the eastern and middle United States, including the All Healing Spring that burst forth from the side of the eastern mountain of Dansville in 1776, according to History of Dansville, 1789-1902, by AO Bunnell and FI Quick. The “exceeding purity and freedom from organic mineral matter” was found far more favorable than modern medicinal remedies, so people at the time flocked to these Water Cures, often giving patients refuge from the hustle and bustle of city life. According to the Glen Haven Water James C. Jackson Cure’s archived advertisement of the time, the facility highlighted “all the advantages of a quiet and pleasant country home, free from the excitement of city or town life, combined with all the beauties of lake, mountain range, and woodland scenery – a quiet – absolutely necessary [for] all persons who are afflicted with diseases of a nervous tendency and – all persons who are sick, whatever the ailment.” With opportunities for rowing, fishing, swimming in the summer, skating and sleighing in the winter, this facility used no medicines of any kind, believing drugs are “not only unnecessary, but absolutely injurious” and “often the product of mere conjecture.” According to History of Dansville, Jackson emphasized “the cultivation of courage, hope, cheerfulness, in strengthening the will and banishing doubt and despondency, as well as upon prudence in eating, drinking, and dressing, and in the observance of all physiological laws.”

turning Our Home on the Hillside – into one of the most successful and famous medical institutions in the country.” He served as chief physician for almost 20 years, administering his medical wisdom Jackson Sanitorium in Dansville (“Laws of Life”) orally and in various publications across the scholarly arena. While he maintained his hydropathy practice, Jackson developed an interest in “pure foods” and their connection to people’s health. In 1863, James Caleb Jackson created the first dry breakfast cereal he called Granula, a graham cracker-derived food. He may have been experimenting with the material at Glen Haven Water Cure, but perfected the invention when he came to Dansville and found the “unequalled white winter wheat of the Genesee Valley” (DAHM). Although this cereal was not “ready to eat” as we think of cereal today, it only needed to be soaked in milk for about twenty minutes or overnight and was considered quite a convenient alternative to breakfast foods at the time, with no active cooking needed in the morning. This Granula was considered “the first cold breakfast cereal and the beginning of a national industry – the precursor to the corn flakes, shredded wheat, the somewhat similar Grape Nuts, and the myriad other varieties of cereal that we eat today” (DAHM). Granula was also an economical option at the time at about 20 cents/pound, and production of this product could barely keep up with demand. At its peak popularity in the 1880s, as much as 60,000 pounds of Granula were produced annually (DAHM). In 1878, John Harvey Kellogg, the operator of another sanitorium in Michigan, visited Our Home on the Hillside and a few years later developed a dry cereal he also called Granula. Jackson successfully sued Kellogg to change the name, and Kellogg’s product was a predecessor of today’s Kellogg’s Corn Flakes. Jackson passed at age 85 in 1895 and is buried in Dansville’s Green Mount Cemetery. Some abandoned buildings of Our Home on the Hillside remain on site since its closure in 1971.

In 1858, he took the helm of Dansville’s Water Cure Facility, renaming it Our Home on the Hillside, and raising the facility to national acclaim, treating thousands of patients annually, including nursing pioneer and Red Cross founder Clara Barton. According to the Dansville Area Historical Museum (DAHM), Jackson “wasted no time

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
