Crying in the Car Is Never a Good ing

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My Border Collie, Sugar, gets very anxious during car rides. She is not one of those dogs who likes to stick their head out of the window! Instead, she whimpers, cries, drools and paces around on the back seat. I’m very worried that she’ll try to jump into my lap. How can I stop her crying? -- Wendy G., Atlanta

DEAR WENDY: Poor Sugar! Anxiety in pets is o en tied to a distressing experience in their past. And her uncontrolled movement around the car is a safety issue.

Talk to Sugar’s veterinarian about her behavior. ey can provide advice and help determine if and when anti-anxiety medication should be given.

Adding a pet restraint system (like a doggie seat or seat belt) or kennel cage will keep Sugar from sliding around in the car and may help her feel more secure.

Next, help reduce Sugar’s anxiety by helping her associate car rides with good things. is will take a little extra time and e ort each day, but it’s worth it.

-- With the car parked in the driveway, sit in the back seat with Sugar (in her seat or cage) for about ve minutes. Give her a small treat and lots of praise when she does. Do this daily, without driving anywhere.

-- When Sugar regularly stays calm, shi to the driver’s seat a er sitting with her in the back seat.

-- Step up to the next level: Turn on the car, giving Sugar a treat when you do so. Put soothing music on the radio.

A trainer can be a good investment, as well. ey’ll work with Sugar (and o en the vet) to make her car rides bearable, and maybe even enjoyable.

STORING TOOLS PROPERLY REDUCES INJURY RISK AND PROMOTES ORGANIZATION

Whether homeowners have a handful of tools or an entire collection of equipment, proper storage of these items means the difference between staying organized and safe or having to waste time looking for tools and running the risk of injury.

Tools often gravitate to other rooms of the house or become misplaced. When they’re brought out for use, tools may not be returned to the toolbox or shed, taking up residence in drawers or closets or just being left out in the open.

Improper storage of tools also may create safety risks for the persons doing the renovation and other members of the household. The Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that hundreds of thousands of injuries treated at emergency rooms are related to power tools and workshop equipment. While the majority of these injuries occur while using the tools, improper tool storage can still cause injury.

By taking care of tools and keeping them orderly, homeowners can lengthen the life expectancy of their tools and reduce the likelihood of tool-related injury.

REALIZE ENERGY SAVINGS WITH 1 SIMPLE STEP

A simple project that will help keep your home comfortable is topping up your attic insulation. This easy project will reduce your household energy consumption and will save you money on monthly energy bills.

A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit or furnace to work harder than necessary. Most attics are insulated, but many, especially those in older homes, are not insulated adequately enough. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps.

Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay Roxul ComfortBatt on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first or existing layer of insulation. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists: cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. Insulation begins working the moment it is installed and lasts throughout the life of the building, which means one easy DIY project can provide years of savings.

Co-owner and Partner of this publication, Genesee Valley Penny Saver, Kim passed away suddenly on Wednesday, February 1st. For over 40 years, along with her brother, Steve Harrison, she has helped bring the Penny Saver to thousands of homes each and every week, helping local businesses promote themselves. Elise J. Prevost (Westacott) of Orchard Park, NY (formerly LeRoy, NY) passed away peacefully at Sloan Comfort Home on January 8, 2023, at age 60.

Graduating from York Central High School in 1981, Elise married and began raising two sons before beginning her career in patient care as a nurse’s aide at Livingston County Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in 1990. During this time, she pursued higher education at Genesee Community College in 2003 where she earned her Associate’s Degree in General Studies. Elise retired after 22 years of service to the health care eld.She then spent time with family and returned to the health care eld to care for elderly and disabled individuals in their homes with Tender Loving Family Care until July 2021. It was at this time Elise waged her courageous battle with cancer and moved to Bu alo under the care of Roswell Park.

She was raised in Mt. Morris and Leicester, NY by her parents, Robert and Bedette Westacott (Wennberg) who predeceased her. She is survived by her stepmother, Virginia P. Westacott. She was predeceased by her husband,Daniel Prevost and her aunt,Dorothy Rowson (Gary) of Salina, KS; uncle, Jack Wennberg of Sebring, FL; and sister-in-law, Cynthia Prevost of Leicester, NY. She is survived by her aunt, Jo Dickenson of Leicester, NY; sisters, Eva L.Westacott Harris (James) of Lawrenceburg, TN and Elaine K. Rosina (Joseph) of Tonawanda; and step-brother, Mark S. Morrill (Krista) of Holley; sister-in-law, Lisa Wasson (Dean LoBrutto) of Mumford; brother-in-law, David Prevost (Barbara Weckworth) of Leicester, Dirk Prevost of Leicester; children, Dennis C. Avon, NY - Died peacefully, surrounded by her children, on January 26, 2023 at age 87. She was a proud alumna of St. Agnes School, Avon High School ‘53, and the University of Rochester School of Nursing ‘56. Predeceased - by just thirteen days - by her husband, Dr. Robert Hayes; son, Michael Hayes; parents, Dr. George and Elizabeth Collins; sisters, Joan (Robert) Warren, Margaret (Duane) Westfall, Martha (George) Cullinan, Mary (Robert) Kelley; brothers, Charles (Dana), David (Elizabeth), George, John (Betty), Paul (Sally), and Dr. Richard (Mary) Collins.

Polly, the twelfth of twelve children, was born in the Collins Family Homestead at 25 East Main Street in Avon, NY. In 1967, following the death of her dear mother, ‘Bess’, this became the Hayes Family Homestead where she and her beloved Bob raised their seven children. is home was always a hub of activity and served as the center of family life. Polly was the quintessential Irish matriarch. Family and her Catholic Faith were the center of her universe. Always loving and supportive, she could be the “tough mom” when necessary (the Hayes boys were not always rule followers). However, she was an easy touch for her nineteen grandchildren, her feeder birds, and puppies. Two of her favorite quotes - that she shared with all those in her world - were: “Do you know how much I love you?” and “We are so Blessed.”

After raising her children, Polly returned to her profession as a Registered Nurse. She worked at Avon Medical Center alongside her husband, Dr. Hayes, and her brother, Dr. Collins, in the practice founded by her father. Polly was a skilled nurse whose kind and caring bedside manner was praised by her patients. Many requested to have Polly deliver their shots due to her gentle touch.

Polly was a lifelong member of St. Agnes Parish in Avon. She served as president of the Rosary Society and was a Eucharistic Minister for many years. For decades, her lovely alto voice could be heard providing rich harmonies in the St. Agnes Choir. Truly, another angelic voice has been added to Heaven’s choir.

Polly’s Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at 1:00pm at St. Agnes Church, 96 Prospect St, Avon, NY. Internment following the Funeral Mass at St. Agnes Cemetery, Avon, NY. Friends and family are invited to e Avon Inn following the services for food, drink, and storytelling. 4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE

In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year. Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location.

In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, andtheAmericasallrecordedarounda5percentincreaseininternational arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day.

The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. A white stargazer lily symbolizes sympathy and any type of white lily expresses majesty and purity.

Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible.

Infrequenttravelersorthosewhohavenevertraveledmaynotunderstand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing.

1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias.

2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either.

3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change.

4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.

The Genesee Valley Conservancy deals with many environmental issues, both long-term and shortterm. From creating natural wild re areas that residents can enjoy for many generations, to ensuring walking trails in the preserves are clean and relatively mudfree, the Genesee Valley Conservancy protects land in the Genesee River Watershed and helps provide a long-term plan to keep the Watershed viable for many years to come.

ese goals are part of the conservancy’s strategic plan.

One of the more important aspects of the Genesee Valley Conservancy is that they protect around 27,600 acres in the watershed, primarily in Livingston and Steuben Counties. For example, the Genesee Valley Conservancy owns and protects the Railroad Bed Trail in Avon, the Island Fort and Island Preserves in Geneseo, and the Mill Creek Nature Preserve and Gully Preserve in Wayland. e Conservancy also runs the Genesee Valley Blueway, a 165-mile kayak path along the Genesee River running from Rochester to the New York State line.

ere are two primary ways the Conservancy acquires land for its preserves. A private landowner may give land to the conservancy for preservation or the conservancy pools money together to buy land outright from the landowner.

e conservancy uses di erent methods to maintain the preserves and keep them safe for everyone to use. A signi cant preservation method the conservancy uses is invasive species removal. is prevents one singular plant from overtaking the entire preserve and allows other noninvasive plants to grow and thrive in the preserve.

One invasive species terrorizing ash trees in the conservancy and most of the Genesee Valley region over the past few years is the emerald ash borer. e Conservancy mitigates ash borer invasion within the preserve by having a tree inspector walk around the forest o en to identify trees impacted by the ash borer.

Other invasive species the Conservancy deals with are the honeysuckle, the giant hogweed, buckthorn, the multi- oral rose, and the Asian long-horned beetle.

e Conservancy uses many of the same methods used on the ash borer to deal with these invasive species.

e Genesee Valley Conservancy helps support land protection e orts through fundraising events throughout the year, such as the Oak Tree Race in Geneseo each September, the Genesee Valley Quiz Night each July, and the Genesee Valley 100, a year-round art exhibit, yet to begin for 2023.

Ben Gajewski, Executive Director of the Conservancy, said the organization does not have concrete plans for the upcoming year. Gajewski said the Conservancy will maintain their preserves and keep them strong so generations to come may enjoy them, a goal the Conservancy strives for every year.

Gajewski also said the Conservancy does not have speci c plans to acquire new lands in 2023, but they will eagerly hear any proposals that come up.

Most of the Conservancy’s decisions are made through Gajewski and a 22-member board of local community members interested in conservation. e Conservancy has six full-time positions: Gajewski, Matt Halladay, the Land Conservationist; Molly Cassatt, Stewardship Director; Kim Wells, Organizational Assistant; Jim Mott, Stewardship Coordinator, and Marcia Koch, the accountant.

KIDS AND SLEEP

School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.

Keeping newborn babies safe is a priority for mothers, fathers and other caregivers. Various ailments can afflict newborns, and one many new parents may be unfamiliar with is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. According to Hackensack Meridian Health, RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization of babies younger than one year of age in the United States. RSV produces symptoms similar to the common cold or the flu and can include runny nose, cough and trouble breathing. In severe cases, particularly in infants, a baby may need to be hospitalized if his or her breathing is greatly compromised. Examples of severe infections include bronchiolitis (an inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia. RSV also can affect adults, but healthy adults are usually only affected by mild symptoms, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In such instances, recovery can take between one and two weeks. Researchers are looking into immunizing pregnant women against RSV as a way to help protect babies from the virus.

Case of Hot Flashes Yet to Be Resolved Despite Therapy

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 78; I had a hysterectomy in 1976 due to excessive vaginal bleeding, but I still have my ovaries. I have had hot flashes since undergoing menopause -- they usually last three to five minutes, and I have them about every two hours around the clock (which obviously interferes with my sleep).

Over the last 28 years, I have tried Premarin (which gave me bad headaches), gabapentin, venlafaxine, Bellergal, melatonin, black cohosh, clonidine, DHEA, Pro-Gest cream (chamomile, hops and valerian root), progesterone and estrogen (together), avoiding caffeine, and eliminating dairy products. None of these have helped.

I would appreciate it if you could offer any suggestions.

ANSWER: I’m sorry to hear of your difficulties. You have certainly tried about all the available therapies. There are two additional ones you might want to consider: Megesterol is a hormonal therapy that is helpful for some women, but the fact that you haven’t responded to estrogens and progestins is not promising. The other is called a stellate ganglion block. You can ask your physician about it.

DEAR DR. ROACH: After a patient has had megadoses of IV and oral antibiotics, is there anything they should do to restore the balance in their body, such as eating probiotics or yogurt? Or is that all nonsense? -- N.W.

ANSWER: The idea makes perfect sense: Antibiotics not only kill the bad bacteria that is infecting us, they also kill many of the healthy bacteria that help us with digestion and other functions. (The whole suite of healthy bacteria living in our gut is termed the “microbiome.”) Why not help the gut return to normal by giving it some healthy bacteria, such as those found in yogurt with live cultures, or specific probiotics, which are just the healthy bacteria?

The answer is that it has been very hard to prove that there is any benefit in doing so. In people with no symptoms after finishing an antibiotic course, there probably aren’t any benefits.

At least one study showed what researchers called a “very severe disturbance” in the person’s microbiome and actually slowed the return to a person’s normal microbiome, which they had prior to antibiotics. Worse still, very rarely, infections have been transmitted through probiotics.

Symptoms after antibiotic therapy, especially diarrhea and fever, could indicate a very severe infection called Clostridioides difficile (“C. diff”), which does not respond to probiotics and usually needs powerful antibiotics to treat. Probiotics have not been found to prevent C. diff.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM

• 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf

• 2 cups half-and-half

• 4 egg yolks

• 3 tablespoons light brown sugar

• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon

• 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

• 3 tablespoons unsalted butter

• 1/2 cup sour cream

• 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

• 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2)

1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F.

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the

3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed.

4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.

5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream.

Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half.

Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

Search Engine Land, which covers digital advertising technology, reports 88 percent of consumers trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations. Unfortunately for businesses, Inc. magazine and entrepreneur Andrew Thomas found that a customer who has a negative business experience is highly likely to share that experience by leaving a bad review. On the other hand, someone who has had a positive experience is unlikely to leave a good review. Roughly 10 percent of happy customers say they were pleased by a product or service. Furthermore, Thomas indicates it takes roughly 40 positive customer experiences to undo the damage from a single negative review.

Customer happiness should be the goal of businesses, with the added benefit of helping to generate more positive reviews and word-of-mouth recommendations. While that is happening, customers can think twice about online reviews.

Speak to product quality, especially when you have a very good experience with an item. Many retailers request feedback via email. Take advantage of this opportunity to o er positive feedback.

Companies gather personal information from customers so they can follow up in many cases. Great customer service helps prevent bad reviews and defines companies’ brands. If you are asked for a phone number or email address, provide it. Doing so helps companies improve their products or services.

Happy customers can reach out to friends and family members to share their experiences with certain companies. Posting your own review on social media also can drum up business for a company you respect.

Customers should weigh their words heavily and think before posting a review. The marketing and consulting resource The Chat Shop says 31 percent of customers are interested in grocery store reviews, 60 percent are likely to read restaurant reviews and 70 percent rely on technology product reviews. Make an e ort to discuss issues with a company before leaving a negative review. You may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. There’s no need to hesitate when leaving positive reviews. Simply explain why you were pleased.

Reviews can make or break a company. Both business owners and customers have a role to play in making online reviews a valuable way to learn about a company.

GET KIDS EXCITED ABOUT VOLUNTEERING

Volunteering benefits people of all ages, but can be especially beneficial to children. Studies have indicated that teenagers who volunteer are less likely to become pregnant or use drugs. In addition, in a review of 60 studies on child engagement, Child Trends found that children who participate in civic engagement programs are likely to be more involved in school, to graduate from high school and to hold more positive civic attitudes than those who do not get involved in such programs. Getting kids to volunteer as they progress through adolescence may not be so difficult. In its 2014 analysis of volunteering trends, Child Trends found that 39 percent of twelfth grade students volunteered at least once a month in 2014 compared to just 27 percent of eighth graders. Older students might feel compelled to volunteer to improve their college admissions applications, but parents can take steps to get their younger children excited at the prospect of volunteering.

Set a positive example. Young children want to emulate their parents, so moms and dads who volunteer may find ready and willing partners in their children. Parents can inform their children when they volunteer and why they do so before bringing kids along to join them.

Don’tforgetfun.Youngchildrenmaybemorelikelytoembracevolunteering if the activity is fun. Kids might not find it too fun to sit next to their parents while mom and dad balance a soup kitchen’s books, but a beach cleanup excursion or a trip to refurbish an inner city park may inspire kids to spend a lifetime giving back to their communities and helping the less fortunate. Keep it simple. Kids may not enjoy volunteering activities that consume too much time or make them feel exhausted. As kids grow older, parents can encourage them to embrace more challenging activities and/or commit more time to volunteering. But keep things simple with especially young children or older children who have never before volunteered.

Try and try again. It might take some trial and error before parents find volunteering opportunities their children truly enjoy. When volunteering with children for the first time, be careful not to commit to more than one day. If children enjoy themselves, then parents can commit more time. If kids do not seem excited by an activity, parents won’t feel guilty or let the charity down by not returning.

Children can benefit greatly by volunteering, and parents can get their youngsters involved at an early age.

Lumosity (lumosity.com) comes in seven languages and has games that promote memory, attention, exibility, problem-solving and more. A er you sign up, you’ll get three free games per day, and the Brain Performance Index monitors your progress. ere is a subscription plan, of course, if you want access to more areas of the site, and you can pay by the month or the year. Test the free version rst to see if you like it.

BrainHQ (brainhq.com) is another cognitive training program that you can access online. eir exercises explore brain speed, memory, attention and more. And you can design your own program. eir goals are to help you think faster, focus better and remember more. You can try it out by subscribing to their email newsletters, which have free daily exercises to sample.

As for me, I’ve found books that don’t cost much and are good at putting my brain through its paces on a daily basis. e New York Times series of puzzle books begins with the Monday editions, which are the easiest of the week. ( e crossword puzzles get increasingly di cult as the week progresses.) I found the whole series of spiral-bound puzzle books (50 to a book) on Amazon.

In this day and age, a lot can be done on the computer but folks don’t always know how to do it and it is hard for some of us to learn it. Having Sara to instruct and guide us is invaluable.
