Balance engagement with patience. NFIB® recommends that business owners tone down their sales efforts without coming off as disengaged. Warmly welcome visitors to the booth or stall and express a willingness to discuss products customers appear interested in. But keep in mind that many people attend festivals and marketplaces to browse, so give them space after welcoming them to the booth.

DID YOU KNOW?
Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problem-solving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.

Discard some items. Homeowners who are downsizing from large homes may need to part with some of their furniture to make their transition to smaller homes go more smoothly. For example, homeowners may need to get by with just one bedroom nightstand and may even need to replace their existing nightstands with something more compact. Discarding living room end tables and downsizing to a smaller coffee table also can help homeowners make smaller common areas more welcoming and less cluttered.

According to the American Osteopathic Association, one in five teenagers will now experience some form of hearing loss. That rate is roughly 30 percent higher than it was 20 years ago. Though various factors have contributed to that increase, the AOA notes that many experts believe an increased use of headphones among teenagers is partly to blame. Listening to headphones at high volumes for extended periods of time can lead to lifelong hearing loss for children and teens. Parents can encourage children and teenagers to listen to music at reasonable levels when using their headphones, and one effective way to control volume without sacrificing sound is to use over-the-ear headphones instead of earbuds. The Cleveland Clinic notes that over-theear headphones are generally more effective than earbuds at cancelling outside noise. That allows over-the-ear headphone users to listen to music at lower volumes, which can significantly reduce their risk for noise-induced hearing loss.

Even though a type of word puzzle was found inscribed on the wall of an ancient Egyptian tomb, the first known crossword puzzles are credited to journalist Arthur Wynne, who designed his “word-cross” in 1913. Wynne’s puzzle appeared in a Sunday newspaper called New York World. Since its inception, the crossword puzzle has become one of the world’s most recognizable puzzles, attracting enthusiasts from all over the world, and now appearing in virtually all newspapers. Crossword puzzles are word games in which the answers correspond to numbered clues. The words are put into a grid of horizontal and vertical squares to form completed, intersecting words. When all of the words are supplied correctly, the puzzle is complete. In North America and Great Britain, crossword grids traditionally have 180-degree rotational symmetry. The diagram, or placement of black squares within the grid, must be symmetric diagonally. This means that the pattern of the puzzle will appear the same if the puzzle is turned upside down. American crossword puzzles conform to a set of established rules made popular by publisher Simon & Schuster, the original crossword puzzle publisher. The standard puzzle grid size is 15x15. However, 17x17, 19x19 and 21x21 also are used. Smaller 13x13 also are accepted. Many crossword puzzles do not use two-letter words, and three-letter words are kept to a minimum. In addition, every letter square must be part of both an Across and a Down word. Crossword rules are different in other parts of the world. For example, in Japan, the corner squares of a crossword puzzle must be white. Despite once publishing a statement describing crosswords as a “sinful waste in the utterly futile finding of words the letters of which will fit into a prearranged pattern” in 1924, The New York Times routinely produces what many consider to be the world’s most challenging crossword puzzles. Stanley Newman is credited with completing a New York Times crossword faster than anyone in history. In 1996, Newman completed a crossword in two minutes, 14 seconds. Crossword puzzles appear in newspapers, magazines and kids’ activity books and are even used in school lessons to supplement vocabulary lessons. Doing these puzzles also may be good for one’s health. According to a University of California at Berkeley study, crossword puzzles may help in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers found that the more often someone engaged in mentally stimulating activities such as crosswords, the less buildup of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain, which are hallmarks of the disease. Doing crossword puzzles also may offer a distraction that helps people reduce stress. Crossword puzzles have a storied history. They are completed recreationally and in competitions, and cruciverbalists look forward to new puzzles in their newspapers every week.

WHAT IS IMMUNOTHERAPY? Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

a brittle Type 1 diabetic for 50 years. I have no history of heart disease. My doctor of 40 years recently retired and had me control my hemoglobin A1C to a range of 5.96.2. My new doctor, who is in her mid-30s, wants me to elevate my hemoglobin A1C to 8.0. Is this the new way of controlling blood sugar? I am confused! Can you please explain the difference in opinion? -- E.S. ANSWER: “Brittle” diabetes is when it is hard to control too-high and too-low blood sugars. The A1C is a blood test that looks at average blood sugar over the past few months. A normal A1C is between 4% and 5.6%. People with normal A1C levels are at very low risk of complications from diabetes, especially of the kidneys (leading to dialysis), eyes (which ultimately leads to blindness) and nerves (diabetic neuropathy is painful and predisposes to injury). On the other hand, low A1C levels put people at higher risk for low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which can be very dangerous. People with Type 2 diabetes and blockages in blood vessels (or at very high risk) were shown to have higher risk of heart attack. For this reason, recent guidelines for older adults with Type 2 diabetes have had more relaxed goals, in the range of 7 to 8, although these do need to be individualized. For Type 1 diabetes, most guidelines still recommend an A1C goal of less than 7%. However, for a person with Type 1 diabetes who also has other medical problems that are likely to impact mortality, and for those at high risk for severe hypoglycemia, a more relaxed goal is not unreasonable. Hypoglycemia is too-low blood sugar, with risk of confusion. This is a big problem in people with brittle diabetes. A lower A1C is associated with a lower risk of damage to small blood vessels, which is what is responsible for nerve damage, eye disease and most diabetic kidney disease. If you have been able to keep your A1C in the range of 5.9 to 6.2, which is not an easy feat, and have not had any serious episodes of low blood sugar recently, I would wonder why your new doctor feels your blood sugar needs to be substantially higher than it is. Finding the right balance between good control and freedom from hypoglycemia isn’t always easy, but these are the risks and benefits your doctors have been considering.

ANATOMY: What is the basic component of hair, skin and nails? Simple Solutions to Combat Winter Skin Sensitivity Hydrate Inside and Out. Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air.

NOW HERE’S A TIP
Accepting New Patients
By JoAnn Derson
All patients of Dr. Eleczko are now being seen at our office!
* If you store nail polish in the fridge, it will dry more quickly and last longer. * “In cold winter months, keep your robe (and slippers or whatever else) under the covers with you when you sleep. Pull it next to or over you a few minutes before you get up. It’ll be toasty and will help make the transition into the cold a little less harsh.” -- G.G. in New York * As tax time draws ever closer, try taping a large manila envelope to the fridge, leaving the top open. Immediately place all tax-related forms and receipts in the envelope as they come in. This way, when you are ready to start your taxes, all items will be together and easy to find. * “To help moisten really dry feet, slather on lotion, wrap feet in plastic wrap, then slip on some socks overnight -- or for as long as you can stand it.” -- B.H. in Michigan * “My no-iron tip: I toss the wrinkly garment into the dryer for about five to 10 minutes with a damp washcloth, and it steams most wrinkles out. It won’t look starched and pressed, but it’s good enough for casual wear or running-late mornings. I haven’t ironed in years.” -- E.W. in Florida * Don’t forget to clean your washing machine every so often by running it on the highest-temperature cycle empty after adding a gallon of vinegar. This will clean out the hoses and get rid of stuck-on detergents. * To remove soot from your carpet, sprinkle it with salt, let sit and then vacuum. Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all traces. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

KITCHEN DESIGN WITH HEALTH AND ERGONOMICS IN MIND (NAPSI)—Whether you’re among the 50 million Americans over 65 (90 percent of whom hope to continue to age at home), the 60 percent of families with children at home, have other ability issues or safety concerns or think you could someday, incorporating ergonomic elements that promote a seamless experience in the kitchen can make it a more comfortable place for everyone for many years to come. Smart Sinks Given the amount of time spent in front of the sink, selecting one that considers your lifestyle and how you cook should be a priority. Details such as the durability and hygienic qualities of a sink’s material along with its style and size can impact efficiency and comfort. For example, the latest sink from BLANCO, a manufacturer of finely crafted sinks, is designed to enhance workflow and accommodate all users. A first of its kind, the IKON® 33” Apron 1 3/4 Bowl with Low Divide sink is made with the brand’s exclusive SILGRANIT granite composite material. Easy to clean and scratch resistant, patented SILGRANIT material is a repellent, nonporous surface that eliminates the need to use harsh chemicals when cleaning. The IKON sink also has a convenient low divide that sits just 5 1/2” from the sink bottom, making it easier to handle large pots and baking sheets while still dividing the sink into cleaning and prepping bowls. The apron front or farmhouse design, minimizes the need to lean over as much and so helps reduce strain. Optional accessories further enhance comfort and workflow. A floating grid provides an extra level within the sink so handling hot and heavy pots can be safer and easier. A Floating Cutting Board that fits right on top of the sink instantly creates another workspace beyond the countertop. Faucets Semi-professional and pull-down faucet models help make clean-up more efficient with their easy-to-maneuver design and powerful dual spray features. To make washing hands, food and dishes easier, consider a faucet with sensor technology such as the BLANCO SOLENTA™ Senso Semi-Professional Kitchen Faucet that lets you turn on the water with a wave of your hand. You don’t have to touch the faucet with your hands to get them clean—or if they’re full. Other ways to enhance the ergonomics in your kitchen include: • Use drawers instead of cabinets for storage so there’s less reaching • Install different countertop heights to accommodate various users • Raise the height of the dishwasher and oven if you can • Select nonporous counter materials like quartz that are easy to keep clean • Use LED lights for more brightness from less energy and that are cool to the touch • Consider an easy-to-clean induction cooking surface—it can reduce energy costs, too Learn More: For further facts about sinks and faucets that can make your kitchen safer, more efficient and even better looking, visit blancoamerica.com. Protecting Our Ecosystems at Churchville-Chili Middle School BY AMANDA PULEO
F
ifth graders at Churchville-Chili Middle School have been learning about the importance of clean water in the environment, and on Jan. 7 they welcomed Rochester Institute of Technology’s Environmental Education Specialist Kaeti Stoss to their classrooms to dive deeper into the subject.
Students compared their test tube samples to the pH chart to determine if the creek is able to support a range of healthy life forms.
Students were then able to do several hands-on experiments with lab equipment and water samples from Irondequoit Creek that Stoss supplied. With the help of Churchville-Chili Enrichment Specialists Andrea Lynch and Stephanie Ricci, students tested the water’s pH and then examined their healthy stream water for a myriad of life forms, including tiny fish, crane fly larvae and water beetles.
Students were asked to share their thoughts and experiences on how to keep waterways healthy.
Stoss is an ambassador for RIT’s water quality-focused environmental education programming for grades K-12. Her mission is to increase awareness and inspire young people to protect this vital resource. Fifth grade classes had just finished a standard science unit on water and are venturing into a study of ecosystems and macro invertebrates, so Stoss’ presentation made an excellent learning bridge. Participating students learned about the unexpectedly high amount of water we use every day, the part water plays in building healthy ecosystems, the many threats to water quality, and practical actions they can take to cut down on pollution. They were also introduced to the concept of pH and learned the effects acid rain has on waterways. Water samples contained a wide variety of healthy fish, insects, larvae and mussels.

DID YOU KNOW? Though certain elements of modern-day Valentine’s Day celebrations can be traced back to the 14th century, chocolate is not one of them. In his 1382 poem, “Parlement of Foules,” English poet Geoffrey Chaucer became the first to connect romance with St. Valentine’s Day. Over the next several centuries, the day’s connection to romance only grew stronger, and by the Victorian era in England, it was not uncommon for lovers to profess their affections through songs, poetry and even the giving of roses as gifts. It was during the Victorian era that British chocolate manufacturer Richard Cadbury began searching for ways to use the cocoa butter that his company was extracting during the production of their drinking chocolate. In 1861, Cadbury decided to produce edible chocolates, which he even sold and marketed in heartshaped boxes decorated with images of Cupid and rosebuds. It would be a few more decades before edible chocolates caught on in the United States, where they remain a must-have item for many Valentine’s Day celebrants more than 150 years after Cadbury first began selling them. SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Beware of the Cold Administrators of the local senior center called it a tailgate party and envisioned many dozens of elderly gathered in the parking lot outside the center, drinking coffee and snacking on doughnuts from the bakery. They’d sent out notices and emails a week in advance. No one showed up. Not a single senior was to be seen, while center management stood on the steps wringing their hands and wondering why. The problem, we all know, is that the oldest of the senior center management team is less than half our average age, with their assistants barely out of college. Degrees galore, of course, in gerontology this and geriatric that, but framed documents hanging on the wall don’t indicate a personal knowledge of what all seniors know for fact: We get cold! Not only do we get cold, but we have to be careful. Our circulation isn’t what it used to be. We lose body heat faster and sometimes don’t even know it’s happening. When our core temperature drops too low, it can damage our liver, kidney and heart. Hypothermia is a real risk and can be deadly. It bears repeating that we need to beware of the cold. Here’s what you can do to stay on top of your own body temperature: • Don’t skimp on the heat at home. Keep the thermostat at 68-70 F and wear a sweater inside. (If you visit an elderly person in the winter, go to the thermostat and see what the setting is.) If you must save money on heating, close off rooms you’re not using. • Ask someone to install clear plastic film insulation on your windows. You’ll be surprised how much it cuts down on icy drafts. • Keep a blanket or quilt on the sofa or recliner, and cover up when you sit down. • If you have to go out, wear layers and a good hat, gloves and scarf. Don’t let body heat escape out of your neckline. And if your senior center hosts an outdoor parking-lot gathering, check the weather report. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

PAW’S CORNER
Homemade hummus with truly unique taste
By Sam Mazzotta
Training Your Dog for Hiking Season DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 1-year-old puppy, Corky, is an energetic mutt who loves to be outside. I started hiking last year, before I adopted Corky, and I plan to do lots more hiking trips when the weather gets warmer. I want to bring Corky along, but I’ve read mixed advice about dogs on trails and at campsites. What’s your take? -- Ellen in Boulder, Colorado DEAR ELLEN: You can definitely take Corky along! Preparation is key: You must prepare Corky for the hike, and you need to research the trails before departing to find out important information, including: -- Are dogs allowed on the trail? -- What are other rules about pets on the trail? -- How long is the hike you’re planning? -- How far can Corky reasonably walk? -- Is water available along the trail, or will you need to carry extra for your dog? -- How good is Corky’s behavior training -- will he come to you as soon as you call? When I’m on a hike, I follow Leave No Trace rules -- which also apply to dogs, so be prepared to carry out his poop -- and another set of rules I call “Annoy No Other Hikers.” Included in this personal set of rules are a few dog-specific ones: -- Keep my dog on a leash during the hike, especially on popular trails. -- Clean up after my dog. -- Make sure to carry adequate water, food, first aid and safety gear (such as booties and vest). -- Keep my dog under control when greeting oncoming hikers. Not everyone is thrilled by dogs, and a jumping, out-of-control dog does the community no favors. Find more training and hiking tips at the American Hiking Society (americanhiking.org/resources/ hiking-with-dogs/). Pick up dog gear advice at Reckless Roaming (recklessroaming.com/how-tohike-with-your-dog/). And Chewy has some good all-around tips as well. See you on the trail! Hummus provides a delicious and healthy alternative to less nutritional dips. Versatile and available in various flavors, hummus can be whipped up at home for those who prefer to make their own dips. The following recipe for “Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread” from James Campbell Caruso’s “España: Explore the Flavors of Spain” (Gibbs Smith) includes some Moroccan flavors that give this easy-toprepare recipe a truly unique taste.

Serves 4 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon coarse salt 21/2 cups plain yogurt Olive oil Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into the work bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook. Add the yogurt and mix on low speed for 2 minutes. Cover the work bowl and allow the dough to rest at room temperature for 30 minutes. Preheat a gas or charcoal grill to medium. Scrape the dough from the work bowl and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a long log and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and use a rolling pin or tortilla press to flatten it into a 1/4-inch-thick tortilla shape. Brush each “tortilla” lightly with olive oil. Grill each for about 40 seconds then turn and cook another 40 seconds.

Fo Ren IN LIVONIA
Market: The real estate market is another factor to consider when deciding if the time is right to downsize. A seller’s market can help seniors get the biggest return on their real estate investment, potentially helping them make up for meager retirement savings. For example, home prices skyrocketed across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic, making that a great time for sellers to put their homes on the market. Seniors selling to downsize may capitalize on such spikes since they won’t be looking to turn around and buy larger, equally expensive homes once they sell their current place. If the market is down and seniors can withstand the work and cost a little longer, it may be best to wait until things bounce back in sellers’ favor.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

General eulogy preparation tips: * Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service. * Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening. * Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments? * Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander. * Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself. * Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again. * Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Dysfunctional Health A local healthcare entity has a phone system that is totally dysfunctional. If you want to reach them, you must do it through their call center. One time, I spent 2 hours trying to speak with a person. Most recently, I spent 4 hours, in various pieces, trying to reach someone. It seems that, if you do not have a computer, the only way to communicate with them is to go to the facility. Apparently, they disconnected the individual phones so as not to pay to have someone answer them.
S E V RA Service matters! I would love to give a huge shout out to the wonderful people who work at the Valero Gas Station on Route 39 (Wadsworth Ave) in Avon. Being one of the few full service stations around, they get many customers, myself included, who stop to avail themselves of their wonderful service, either due to weather or for convenience. Even during these bitterly cold days they still manage to greet you with an upbeat attitude and a smile. I, for one, find it refreshing and will continue to frequent their business for some time to come. Toys for Tots The Memorial Day Detachment #468 Marine Corps League would like to thank everyone who participated in our 2021 Toys For Tots campaign in Ontario and Livingston counties. Due to your help and generosity, we were able to distribute over 6,000 toys and help around 2,000 children have a Merry Christmas. A lot of these children would not have otherwise been able to celebrate the holiday with a new toy without your help. All of the toys collected in each county are distributed in that county along with donations from our great corporate sponsors. Thank you and we look forward to our 2022 campaign.
Living in a Winter Wonderland What a great time for us to get outdoors, be it for a day trip or a weekend away from home. Out of shape? No problem! Walk along a groomed trail, dirt road, or just hop off the roadside, turn the car off, and listen. Too many times, people that have lived in Upstate NY for years are complaining about cold and snow. By April, I become one, but far more often, complaints are as vast as the blinding tundra. Enjoy the snow, put up with the cold, and if you find yourself saying, “Snow, go away” in January, maybe it is time to pack up and move.
Bus red lights Please stop running my bus' red lights. When a bus stops and the red lights are on, that means you need to stop! Not to keep driving through and give me a wave. In the last few weeks, I have had many people running the red on my bus. We are trying to get kids safely to and from school. Please stop a distance from the bus so we know you are stopping and watching for our kids! Let's all be safe out on the road. Slow down please! To the residents of [local road]: I live here. The road is eight miles long, double yellow, and 35 MPH the entire length because of all its curves and turns. You could probably stretch 35 MPH to 41 or 42, but not 50 or 55. I am tired of taking my life in my hands just getting my mail. Also, I do not like the dirty looks I get for slowing you down while crossing the road. I am 71, and I would like to see 72. Seriously! I didn't get a chance to vote in that GVPS poll asking about the environment. I am not concerned at all about the environment. Why should I be concerned about something that cannot be controlled? So, that would be 42%, plus 1. Have a nice day. Animal Advocates Thank you to all who watch out for and help helpless animals. You do not have to donate to an organization who pays their CEO $750,000 a year. You can make a huge difference in an animals well-being by donating to your local animal shelter or volunteering. You can also buy cat and dog food and deliver it to families in need or the woman down your street or in the next neighborhood who feeds and gives shelter to stray cats. Three friends and I have been doing this for a couple years now. We have yet to have anyone refuse food for the animals. You won't have to look too far to find animals in need. As for reporting suspected abuse or neglect, yes, call 911. They will direct you to your local animal control/animal abuse contact numbers, and your issue will be checked out. See something; say something. You are their voice.
