BRAIN-HEALTHY HABITS TO EMBRACE
Cognitive decline is a condition that is often associated with aging, but even middle-aged people can experience memory loss or cognition issues.
The Alzheimer’s Association says that more than five million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. By 2050, that number could rise to as high as 16 million people. More than 747,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia, says the Canadian Alzheimer’s Association.
Although there is no definitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes.
Exercise: Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood flow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory.
The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood flow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels.
Quit smoking: The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood flow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels.
Eat healthy foods: Foods that are good for the heart and blood vessels also are good for the brain. These include fresh fruits and vegetables,
whole grains, fish-based proteins, unsaturated fats, and foods containing omega-3 fatty acids. Neurologists state that, while research on diet and cognitive function is limited, diets, such as Mediterranean and Mediterranean-DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension), may contribute to a lower risk of cognitive issues.
Consume caffeine: Caffeine may help boost memory performance and brain health. A Journal of Nutrition study found people ages 70 and older who consumed more caffeine scored better on tests of mental function than those who consumed less caffeine. Caffeine may help improve attention span, cognitive function and feelings of well-being. Information from Psychology Today also indicates caffeine may help in the storage of dopamine, which can reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. In addition, compounds in cocoa and coffee beans may improve vascular health and help repair cellular damage due to high antioxidant levels.
Work the brain: Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them.
A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together.
Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapescansavehomeowners enough energy to make the projectspayforthemselvesinless than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertimebutdropconsiderably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs. The DIY movement has inspired many homeowners to tackle home repair and remodeling projects on their own. DIY projects can be rewarding, and many homeowners who have embraced the DIY movement have discovered talents they never before knew they had.
But no matter how simple popular home renovation television shows make remodeling projects appear, homeowners should know that such undertakings are far more difficult than they appear on television. Homeowners who overestimate their abilities and the time they have to complete projects can cost themselves substantial amounts of money. In fact, there are a variety of reasons homeowners might want to work with professional contractors when tackling home improvement projects.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM
Many pet owners would never intentionallyharmtheircompanion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food.
Members of:
Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago.
The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.
HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES
How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours.
Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.

Remembering Johnny Antonelli: A Baseball Legend and Rochester Hero
BY KAYLEE DUDA
As the vibrant city of Rochester celebrates another year of life, it’s impossible not to reminisce about the remarkable individuals who have graced our community with their talent, passion, and unwavering spirit. Today, we fondly remember one of Rochester’s most cherished sons, Johnny Antonelli, in what would have been his birthday month.
Born on April 12th, 1930 in Rochester, Johnny Antonelli’s journey from the Flower City to the bright lights of Major League Baseball exemplifies the epitome of perseverance and dedication. His legacy extends far beyond the baseball diamond, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of Rochesterians and baseball enthusiasts worldwide.
Antonelli’s domination on the mound was evident from a young age, captivating scouts with his exceptional pitching skills during his teenage years at omas Jefferson High School. A er signing with the Boston Braves in 1948, he embarked on a stellar career that saw him don the jerseys of the Milwaukee Braves, New York and San Francisco Giants, and Cleveland Indians.
However, it was during his time with the San Francisco Giants that Antonelli etched his name in baseball history. In 1954, he played a pivotal role in leading the Giants to their first World Series title since relocating from New York. His dominant performance earned him All-Star honors and the admiration of fans across the nation.
Beyond his achievements on the field, Johnny Antonelli remained a beacon of humility and integrity, embodying the values of sportsmanship and community service. Only a year a er signing for the Milwaukee Braves, Antonelli served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean War.
roughout his life, he remained deeply connected to his Rochester roots, giving back to the city that nurtured his talent and shaped his character. He was also a devoted family man, a loving husband, and a doting father. Despite the demands of his career, he always made time for his family, instilling in them the same values of hard work, determination, and compassion that defined his own life. His legacy of love and devotion continues to be cherished by his family and serves as a testament to the depth of his character both on and off the field.
In the twilight of his career, Antonelli returned to Rochester, where he continued to inspire future generations of athletes as a coach and mentor. His impact extended beyond baseball, as he devoted himself to various charitable endeavors, enriching the lives of countless individuals in the community. For a short period, he even served on the board of the Rochester Red Wings.
As we honor the memory of Johnny Antonelli, let us reflect on the values he embodied – perseverance, humility, and a steadfast commitment to excellence. His legacy serves as a reminder that
with passion and determination, anything is possible, both on and off the field.
He succumbed to cancer on February 28, 2020, at the age of 89, but his spirit lives on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him as well as in the enduring legacy he leaves behind. As we celebrate his birthday, let us pay tribute to a true Rochester legend whose impact will be felt for generations to come. Johnny Antonelli will always hold a special place in our hearts.

LIVONIA RESIDENTS
e Livonia Volunteer Fire Department must maintain adequate numbers of firefighters to be able to protect our community at the high level of professionalism you’re used to! What would happen if you have a fire, are pinned in a car accident, have a flooded basement, have a high level of gas or CO in your home or a number of other emergencies and there are no volunteers to help you?
Livonia Firefighters are everyday heroes who dedicate their spare time to helping people in their time of need. We are always looking for new members, and it is our hope you will join us and become part of our Sister and Brotherhood.

PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Mazzotta
Bringing an old dog to heel
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A er my aunt passed away, I gladly agreed to take in her dog, “Hunter,” a rather squat, obese Beagle. He’s a happy old dog of about 9 years, but my aunt gave him little to no training other than housetraining. at makes walking him -- something the vet recommended I do twice a day, in addition to a diet -- a chore. Hunter will walk a few steps, then sit down and refuse to budge. When he does feel like walking, he either tugs the leash forward or lags behind. How can I correct this? -- James T., Plano, Texas
DEAR JAMES: Hunter is not used to the new lifestyle yet, and he’s reacting in a predictable way. He’s also out of shape and probably more stressed than you think. e first thing I prescribe is patience. e second thing I’d prescribe is persistence.
You’ll want to gradually lengthen his walks. Each day, always at the same time, put Hunter on his leash and start the walk. As soon as Hunter begins to lag or tug forward, stop walking, adjust the distance so that he’s standing or sitting next to you, and start again, saying, “Heel” as you step forward.
When he sits and won’t budge, encourage him to go a few more steps by giving him a very small treat. en turn around and go home. On your next walk, repeat this encouragement, going just a little farther. See what I’m getting at? Make each walk just a tiny bit farther.
As Hunter loses weight, learns to trust you and gains confidence on the leash, he will eventually pull you along. Time, patience and consistency will do the trick.

EASY WAYS TO CUT GROCERY COSTS
Purchase generic brands - Switching to generic brands can immediately bring about savings over “premium” counterparts. Generics cost less because manufacturers don’t have to offset the cost of advertising. Many generic brands are made in the same facilities that produce name brand items.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES
Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

Revitalize your laundry room. Put a stop to the mountain of dirty clothes that grows every week by getting each family member a laundry basket. If clothing doesn’t make it into their bin, it’s not getting washed. Keep your laundry room stocked with detergent, bleach and stain remover.

Financing may not be an option. Teenagers typically have no credit history, so it’s unlikely they will secure automotive loans without a co-signer. Furthermore, teens under the age of 18 may find they are not legally able to sign contracts or have a vehicle title in their name. In such instances, an adult will have to hold the title and ownership until the teen turns 18.

HOW TO FIND A CAR THAT FITS YOUR BUDGET
Check with different lenders - The Federal Reserve increased interest rates in the middle of 2022 and it initially planned to increase rates a few more times throughout the year. People, particularly those who do not have the best credit, can do themselves a favor and shop around at different banks for the best loan rates - the loan may be less costly than what’s offered through the dealership. Also, certified pre-owned vehicles tend to come with promotional interest rates that are lower than the average APR, which makes them a viable alternative.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE
(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:
Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.
Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home.
Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

Slower Heart Rates Are More Common in Athletes
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a question about a resting heart rate, specifically when it is considered too slow for one’s health. I am a 67-year-old male who, from an early age to the present time, has always been physically active every day. Now retired, I feel a great sense of accomplishment when I work out. The endorphin boosts and benefits to my body are my daily rewards. Recently, I received a fitness watch that tracks my heart rate. My nightly sleep sessions show a range of 39-58 bpm over the past month. During a dental visit a while ago, I was told by the hygienist that she knew of an athlete who died in his sleep, and his heart rate was so slow that it just stopped. Is this possible? -- D.M.
ANSWER: This really wasn’t a great thing for the hygienist to say, as there is very little truth to it. Most people who exercise do have a slower heart rate, and it’s a good sign of a healthy heart. However, some older people can develop heart block when the electrical impulse from the natural pacemaker of the heart fails to pass to the ventricles. This is an occasional cause of sudden cardiac death.
Your heart rate suggests, to me, that it’s more likely the healthy heart rate of an athlete than it is a disease of the electrical conduction system, but a visit with your regular doctor or cardiologist can separate this through a simple electrocardiogram in most cases. Some people just have slow heart rates, but they can be treated with a pacemaker if they’re symptomatic. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2024 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

FINANCING FUNERALS
According to Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $10,000. It can be easy to overlook planning for such a large expense, and many people may think their funeral costs will be covered by their life insurance policies. However, that isn’t always the case and certain complications can arise. The funeral planning information guide Funeral Basics states that sometimes insurance policies become invalid if payments have not been made. Policies may have liens on them, or some named beneficiaries may no longer be alive. This can stall the process as issues are worked through. In addition, it can sometimes take between six and eight weeks for beneficiaries to receive life insurance policy payouts. Since many funerals take place within a week of a person’s death, it’s unlikely that surviving family members will be able to finance funerals with life insurance payouts. In addition, some policies may not be assignable, which means the benefits cannot be assigned to go to a third party who will file the claim for you (i.e., the funeral home or an assignment company with which the funeral home partners). It’s important to determine if an existing policy is assignable and to take appropriate measures if it is not. Individuals may want to consider burial insurance or preneed funeral insurance. Another option is to use preplanning services, which allow people to prepay for funeral expenses and make planning decisions regarding the services and burial so that family members will not be tasked with financing and/or planning a funeral during a difficult time in their lives.
“The obscure we see eventually. The completely obvious, it seems, takes longer.....” ~ Edward
R. Murrow
In our interpersonal relationships, how often we suddenly wake up to a situation that should have been obvious from the beginning. In some cases, we may not want to face up to an unpleasant fact so we ignore it and pretend to search for other solutions.
For some reason, the more obvious a thing or an idea may be, the easier it avoids detection. The lesson here is that, when we must find an answer, we should check out the obvious first, rather than come to it as a last resort.
Over the years, we have served a great number of families in this community. Most of them came to us on the recommendation of other families who appreciated our thoughtful consideration.

Richard C. Bennett
March 28, 2024
Livonia: At age 87, Richard “Dick” Bennett passed peacefully on March 28, 2024 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. He was born on April 14, 1936 in Groveland, NY to the late George and A. Gertrude (Hendershott) Bennett. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Juanita Bennett; brother, Ronald Bennett; and son, Rodrick Bennett. Survived by his wife, Suzanne (Schlegel) Bennett; his sons, Rick (Laurie) Bennett, Rusty (Sharon) Bennett, Randy (Anna) Bennett, and Russell (Suzanne) Bennett; stepchildren, Colleen (Jeff) Drake, Darlene (Sam) Bozzett, Tammy (Daryl) Lemon, and Jennifer Coffey (Ryan); also survived by many grandchildren & great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law Jennifer Bennett, several stepsiblings, nieces and nephews.
Dick was born and raised in the thriving metropolis of Groveland Station, surrounded, always, by family. As Juanita was told while she was dating Dick, “Don’t ever say anything bad about the Bennetts, everyone here is related to them,” a fact that was o en revisited on many trips through the cemetery on Groveland Hill. He grew up making mischief and having fun with his younger brother, Ron, and bonding over their shared love of cars. Following the sudden, difficult passing of their father, when Dick was 14, their mother eventually remarried to Clarence House, and for the first time in Dick’s life, he gained a wonderful step-family. Dick graduated high school in Geneseo in 1954, having run track and played football for several years.
Dick married Juanita in 1956, with whom he spent 52 years. ey raised 5 boys in the house he built on Big Tree Road. He had many jobs to provide for his family, including as a mechanic in Avon, driving an enormous truck building the Niagara Falls Power Station, and a decades-long career at Gleason Works in Rochester working with their gear-cutting machines. rough his position at Gleason Works, he traveled to such exotic places as Detroit, the UK, Germany, and Belgium. In his time at home, he was o en found helping his neighbors and others who called on him in their time of need. He was also, for a time, a member of the Civil Defense.
Flower Meanings
If you would like to customize your arrangement of funeral flowers further, there are more flower meanings that might express your sentiments in this time of grief and remembrance. Though they may not be the traditional funeral flowers, any flowers that share your sympathy with the bereaved and celebrate the deceased’s memory are appropriate for a funeral. The xeranthemum symbolizes eternity and immortality. Cyclamens say “goodbye”¤? and forget-me-nots send a message of faithful love and memories. Marjoram conveys comfort and consolation. The nasturtium celebrates patriotism. If you are aware of flowers that were a favorite of the deceased or that a member of the bereaved family particularly favors, those blooms may also be a good choice for a funeral gift. Whatever flowers you choose to send, your thoughtful message of sympathy will certainly be a comfort to those who are mourning the loss of a loved one.
When his boys were nearly all grown, he took on the challenges presented by the Livonia Volunteer Fire Department. As a Life Member, Dick spent decades in active service, which eventually led to his position as Livingston County Fire Commissioner. His time spent training, fighting fires, and spending time at the firehouse made the Fire Department a large, greatly loved, part of the second half of his life.
He treasured his time with his family. While his time with his sons wasn’t as plentiful as he may have wished, he was able to coach Little League baseball and find the time to go to their games, concerts, parades, and other events when he could. One of his greatest regrets was not being able to spend more time with his children when they were young. As his boys began to have families of their own, he also loved his grandkids. He was known to joke that “If I knew how much fun the grandkids would be, I would have had them first.” He enjoyed the time spent with them, and spoiling them, for the rest of his life.
Following the loss of Juanita, through which he relived the heartbreak of losing his father, he spent a few difficult years living with a palpable sadness. In time, he grew closer to and eventually married the second love of his life, Suzanne. For the second time in his life, he gained a wonderful step-family. His expanding love for his new daughters and a trove of grandchildren and great-grandchildren were an additional source of joy for him throughout the rest of his life. As Dick loved and was loved by his new step-family, so was Sue by the sons and grandchildren she gained. Dick and Sue were able to share over a decade together, full of happiness that Dick could never have seen coming, for which he was truly blessed.
Altogether, Dick Bennett could be described by his many friends and family as a good, hardworking, loving man, who will be dearly missed. A Memorial Service to Celebrate Dick’s Life will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, April 10th, at the Lakeville United Church of Christ, 5687 Big Tree Road, Lakeville, NY with Fireman’s Honors. Burial will be held privately at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Geneseo, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Livonia Fire Department, PO Box 151, Livonia, NY 14487. THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF DAIRY
Heart health benefits: Some people avoid dairy because of perceptions that it is bad for cardiac health. A report presented at the 2018 Congress of the European Society of Cardiology that looked at 20 studies involving around 25,000 people found no association between the consumption of most dairy products (including whole fat varieties) and cardiovascular disease. The only exception was milk, but the results showed one would have to drink almost a liter of milk a day for a higher risk of cardiovascular disease. Still, the American Heart Association recommends adults choose fat-free or low-fat dairy products whenever possible. Also, a 2018 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found men who ate plenty of fermented dairy products like yogurt and cheese had a smaller risk of coronary artery disease than men who ate less.

[Local Town] PD Coverage
Thank you so much to the woman who stopped me and blessed me with gift cards at Wegmans. I have been through a rough time lately and this helped me get my medicine and a salad for lunch. You said it was “Just dollar amount” but to me that was more than I needed and then some. Please know I will pay it forward when I’m back on my feet!
I understand there is a shortage in workforce. However, [local PD] is a 24/7 agency. At a time when public safety matters the most, [local PD] needs to uphold their 24/7 coverage. If necessary, this means [Chief] and [Sergeant] should be forced to cover any shifts that are lacking coverage regardless of the day, night or holiday since [local PD] is a 24/7 agency.
(Literally and figuratively.)
A man with a mission
“BEE” Thoughtful
Every day along Rt 21 or 5&20 near Canandaigua you will likely see a gray pickup truck stopped with orange cones for safety near it. You will see an individual picking up debris and garbage along the roadside. He is not on the payroll. He is a dedicated volunteer who begins his day early and ends his day late. I live on the same street as Malcolm and see him leave in the morning, come home for lunch and return to his mission until late afternoon. So when you see him along the roadside, give a quick two honks on the horn to let him know how much you appreciate his dedication to keeping things clean on our roadways.
As most of us have heard, pollinators are in a steep decline. As one thing you can do to combat this, many reputable garden centers are selling a variety of Mason Bee houses for your yard. Have you read what bee experts say about these houses? Do your research before installing one. Mason Bees are solitary. These bee houses offer a location where eggs are laid and hatch in the equivalent of a cramped tenement. Experts describe them as an environment where diseases run rampant, and they provide an easy target for predators of bees. It’s shocking that garden centers are promoting this trend. Please, before you add one to your garden, research what entomologists say about these houses.

Here’s a Tip
* D.B. in Minnesota has this to share: “When you are going fishing and only bringing a couple of lures, use an old, empty pill container. Holds well and you won’t get poked!”
* Oranges are wonderful treats and full of delicious fiber and vitamin C. Save your peels and stash them in a net bag hanging from your rearview mirror for just a day or two. As they dry, they give off the best smell.
* Need to take pills daily? Set a reminder on your cellphone. Most have alarm functions, and it works!

PHILLY CHEESESTEAK DUMPLINGS
Makes about 45
50 thin square eggless wonton wrappers (around 4 inches in size)
Vegetable oil, for frying
Filling:
5 ounces shiitake mushrooms, stems removed and finely chopped
1 tablespoon roasted sesame oil
1 pound, 2 ounces cooked, shredded beef short ribs
11 ounces cabbage kimchi, drained and finely chopped
3 1/2 ounces spring onions, finely chopped
3 ounces pickled jalapeños, finely chopped
1 pound, 2 ounces mature cheddar cheese, grated
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
To serve:
Silgochu (dried chilli threads)
1 spring onion, julienned and soaked in ice water until curled, then drained Sriracha
For the filling, first sauté the mushrooms in the sesame oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium-low heat until just softened. Remove from the heat and set aside. In a large bowl, combine the rest of the filling ingredients with the mushrooms. Mix together using your hands, really breaking up the short rib meat to make a uniform texture.
For the dumplings, line a couple of baking sheets with parchment and set aside. Fill a small bowl with water. Unwrap the wonton wrappers and cover lightly with a piece of clingfilm to keep them moist. Lay a wrapper on a clean work surface and put 1 ounce of the meat filling in the center. Dip a forefinger into the water and run it along the edges of the wrapper to moisten the surface. Now bring the open edges to the center, and pinch where the edges meet each other, creating four seams in a cross shape. Set aside and cover with clingfilm or a damp tea towel while you shape the rest. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling, making sure the dumplings are not touching on the baking sheets.
To a medium saucepan, add the vegetable oil and heat to 340 F (170 C). Working in batches, place the dumplings on their sides in the pan in a single layer without crowding. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until golden brown. Transfer the fried dumplings to a wire rack or kitchen paper-lined plate to drain. Repeat with the remaining dumplings. If you don’t plan on cooking them straight away, you can freeze them on the baking sheets, then bag them up and store in the freezer.
Top with some of the silgochu and curly spring onion and serve immediately with the sriracha.

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

STRANGE BUT TRUE
By Lucie Winborne
* A common issue with blood donation -- along with other types of charitable contributions -- is that if donors don’t know the recipient, it’s harder to convince them that donating is beneficial. Therefore, in an effort to encourage more young people to give blood, Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, sends a text when their donation has been dispensed to someone in need, providing proof that it’s going to good use.
