it all began
in November of 1985… when the Grzenda Christmas Tree Farm was established. The following spring, we planted our first trees (4,000 of them}, and several of those continue to grow on the farm. Since then, we have planted approximately 50,000 more trees and have enjoyed thousands of wonderful customers. Livonia and the surrounding communities have multiplied our success beyond our dreams. God has truly blessed our farm and you have been a blessing to our business. Now after 37 years, we have chosen to retire and move our business to our loyal farm manager, Pat DePuy. Pat will bring fresh ideas and new energy to this Christmas tree business. Most assuredly, Pat will continue producing a superior product with outstanding customer service. Retirement will not have us saying goodbye to you. Surely, we will see you around the community and on the farm.
for 37 wonderful years.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m thoroughly confused by all the “health advice” for pets that I read online. One site tells me my cats should eat only organic meats and chicken (and nothing else!), while a Facebook page tells me that my pets will do fine on a vegan diet. My granddaughter’s Instagram feed says that cats need a slew of supplements to be healthy, including pink Himalayan salt, which is all the rage. How can I figure out what’s really best for my cats? — Jim H., Manchester, New Hampshire DEAR JIM: I feel your pain. The internet has given us access to all the information we’re looking for — and all the information we weren’t. Companies have sprung up left and right, peddling the latest supplement or dietary recommendation to keep our pets totally healthy, guaranteed. Fad diets can sometimes do harm to pets because key nutrients may be left out. Feeding dogs and cats only meat, and nothing else, can be as bad as feeding them no meat. And while most supplements are safe, you have to read up on what they actually do and know what a safe dose is. Your first and best resource is your pet’s veterinarian, who has years of advanced education in animal care and stays abreast of the latest developments in pet health and wellness. He or she can tell you the best diet or supplements to give your cats, and which info on the internet to pay attention to and which to disregard. Talk to the vet at your cats’ next checkup, and you’ll get a much clearer picture of the best way to keep them healthy and well fed. No trendy salts needed. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Lisa Jakub, who played teenager Lydia Hilliard in “Mrs. Doubtfire,” was kicked out of her Toronto school for taking the five-month-long film gig. When co-star Robin Williams found out, he wrote a letter to the school asking them to reconsider. School officials framed his letter, but didn’t change their mind about Jakub.

MAKE EASTER EGGS LAST
GOOD FRIDAY Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus was condemned by his peers as King Herod and Pontius Pilate had found him not guilty of his crimes. But crowds were enraged, and Pilate reluctantly ordered his crucifixion rather than face a mass riot.
Holy Week at St. Agnes, St. Rose and St. Paul of the Cross Easter Sunday
Families gather on Easter to participate in many different traditions that have been passed down through time. One such tradition is coloring Easter eggs. Millions of eggs are harvested and sold this time of year to be included in Easter festivities. However, soon after egg hunts have been completed and family dinners are brought to the table, those colored eggs may be relegated to the trash. When colored with foodgrade dyes, such as those manufactured and readily available around Easter, the eggs remain safe to eat. Colored eggs that are stored in a refrigerator can last up to a week if their shells remain intact. Peeled eggs may last up to five days, says the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. Once eggs are boiled and dyed, they should be promptly put into the refrigerator to keep them fresh and edible. It’s adviseable to use plastic, wood or papier-mâché eggs for Easter egg hunts, as eggs made of such materials will not spoil. Otherwise, hide and refrigerate hardboiled eggs if this task can be completed within two hours. After that time frame, the eggs have the potential to spoil. By eating colored eggs, you can reduce waste and add a tasty appetizer to Easter meals.

THE MEANING BEHIND EASTER SYMBOLS Palm fronds: Palm Sunday is the final Sunday of Lent, taking place one week before Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. According to the Gospels, Jesus rode a young donkey into Jerusalem, where the townspeople threw palms in front of him in homage. That practice was a customary sign of respect in Jerusalem, and today Christians believe the palm is a sign of peace. Palms continue to be distributed to the faithful during Palm Sunday Mass.

DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE. In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall. If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall. To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today.

Thank you! We would like to thank Dr. Fischer & staff at Perry Pet in Livonia for their kindness & compassion when we took our beloved Tali in during an emergency visit last week. Although their schedule was full, Dr. Fischer took time to answer all our questions & offer all of our options for treatment. Although the outcome was not what we had hoped for, we will be forever grateful for their caring. We are so fortunate to have this facility in our area. Joan & Jim Briggs
Shopping fear Recently I was at local [store] In line behind a couple that stole items under their coats in shopping cart, even had a small duffle bag on bottom rack full of who knows what?? I watched the cashier as she made a choice to keep quiet about it, and then realized that I was alone shopping and I should keep quiet as well, out of fear. I think Covid gave us all a heavy dose of fear that will linger for a good long time. Shame on us to be driven to silence out of fear. Woke bullies, dishonest people, are all whining, self absorbed pitiful creatures. Why do they feel so entitled? Maybe because of silent little mice like you and me, just working hard, minding our own business while the spoiled brats take over our world. I don’t want to die over a stolen bag of donuts, but I’d like to be proud of my own reflection in the mirror. Fear sucks
Pick up the poo! If you have a dog and are going to take that dog out for a walk, please bring your doggy poop bags! I saw a woman allow her dog to poop on my front lawn. Then, she walked away without picking it up. How irresponsible! Now, I have to clean up her dog's poop or risk stepping in it. Please pick up after your pets!
Happy Lights! Thank you to the people on the corner in Mumford with the rainbow lights. It makes me happy to drive through town. It's a refreshing change from the daily negativity. Thanks for supporting everyone!

Moose are powerful swimmers.
A moose can dive 20 feet under water and stay under water for up to 30 seconds! They can also swim fairly fast considering their size: up to six miles an hour. Moose hair 3 is hollow, which helps them stay afloat while swimming or while eating. It also helps to keep moose warm in the winter.

Unfortunately, there are no cures for progressive dementias that are linked to plaque tangles in the brain and changes in the way the brain processes the protein alpha-synuclein. Patience and various medications may be needed to help those with dementia live fuller lives. Cholinesterase inhibitors are mainstays in dementia treatment. These medications prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine, a chemical messenger important for learning and memory. Acetylcholine supports communication among nerve cells by keeping acetylcholine levels high. Physical therapy and cognitive therapy may be used in conjunction with medication to assist those with various dementias.
has never perspired and would like to know why. Heat makes me very sick. I love the outdoors, but can be out only a short while in the warmer weather. No one seems to have an answer for me. -- P.M. ANSWER: The name for the condition of no sweating at all is anhidrosis, and there are several causes. There are rare conditions people are born with. These are a possibility, since you have never perspired. However, nearly all of these rare diseases have other significant symptoms you don’t mention. Damage to sweat glands can be seen in autoimmune diseases and diseases that can destroy sweat glands. None of these is likely, as they too have additional symptoms you would have identified during your life. Likewise, you don’t mention medications, which may have lack of sweating as a side effect. I suspect you don’t have a diagnosable disease but rather that you are on the far end of the normal range for sweating (this would be called hypohidrosis). Just as there are people who get drenched with sweat in mildly warm weather, there are some who sweat very little. Since sweating is a major way of keeping cool, you are at higher risk for heat injury, including heatstroke. Avoiding hot weather, as it sounds like you’ve done, is wise. Sun protection (e.g., wearing a wide-brimmed hat) is also wise, as is making sure you have enough fluids. Avoiding excess heat becomes even more important as you get older, since an older person has less ability to adapt to heat than a younger person. ***

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Italian banker Gilberto Baschiera was a modern-day Robin Hood. Over a period of seven years, he secretly diverted 1 million euros from wealthy clients to poorer ones so they could qualify for loans. He made no profit from these dealings and avoided jail in 2018 with a plea bargain.

Keeping newborn babies safe is a priority for mothers, fathers and other caregivers. Various ailments can afflict newborns, and one many new parents may be unfamiliar with is respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV. According to Hackensack Meridian Health, RSV is the leading cause of hospitalization of babies younger than one year of age in the United States. RSV produces symptoms similar to the common cold or the flu and can include runny nose, cough and trouble breathing. In severe cases, particularly in infants, a baby may need to be hospitalized if his or her breathing is greatly compromised. Examples of severe infections include bronchiolitis (an inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia. RSV also can affect adults, but healthy adults are usually only affected by mild symptoms, says the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In such instances, recovery can take between one and two weeks. Researchers are looking into immunizing pregnant women against RSV as a way to help protect babies from the virus.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Breaking News Alert! Turn Off the Television I learned a lesson this week when I discovered I’d spent over 10 hours glued to the news on television. Afterward, I was depressed and full of anxiety. I knew that couldn’t be good for me. It makes sense that a gym chain turned off the TVs in their locations in 27 states, believing that cable news wasn’t good for a healthy lifestyle. And this was several years ago, when the news was comparatively milder than it is now. Consider how much different our lives -- and the news -- are today, and it makes a lot of sense to avoid an overdose of what’s going on in the world. My newest tactic is to use a timer. At the top of the hour, I’ll turn on a cable news channel, watch for several minutes ... and then turn it off. Whatever is new will be talked about then, but it’s often a repeat of the top of the previous hour. What do we do instead once we turn off the news? Change to a different channel, perhaps one that shows re-runs from a previous era. The “Andy Griffith Show” comes to mind. So do “My Three Sons,” “I Love Lucy” and “Columbo.” Then there’s premium fare like The History Channel, Smithsonian Channel and even best of British TV channels. Or we can turn the television off altogether and, now that spring is here, go outside and walk. Or start a new garden. Or talk to neighbors who are also escaping the television. There are specific health reasons to get away from the television news, and sitting too long is at the top of the list. It leads to memory decline, anxiety, stress ... which leads to insomnia and changes in diet. We think we need to keep up with current events ... but at what cost? (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times.
CITIES ALONG THE APPALACHIAN TRAIL
Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com.

PITFALLS TO AVOID FALLING INTO DEBT Too many accounts: A 2019 study from the credit reporting agency Experian found that the average American has four credit cards. Though many consumers can effectively manage that many cards, the more cards an individual has, the easier it can be to lose track of spending. More cards also means a greater potential for more debt, as each card has its own limit that is unrelated to the limits on other cards.

WHAT IS A TRUST? A trust is a relationship in which another party is given authority to handle a person’s assets for the benefit of that person’s beneficiaries. When making a trust, a person will need to designate someone as a trustee, who will be tasked with distributing assets in accordance to the terms dictated in the trust. There are many types of trusts, and working with an attorney who specializes in estate planning can help men and women determine which type of trust, if any, is best for them.

Sandy had a passion for music. Throughout her lifetime she was always involved in music and spent much of her free time performing and singing. As a young adult she began performing with her sister and other friends in a traveling performing group called Stage 3 Productions. Throughout her lifetime, she sang in the St. Agnes Catholic Church choir and folk group and spent many years as the director of the folk group. Later in life she sang in a vocal performing group called Take Note and they performed regularly around the area for events and in local nursing homes and senior centers. Sandy especially wanted to share her love of music with the children of St. Agnes School. For the majority of her time there she produced and directed many musical performances and pageants each year. Most dear to her heart was the annual Christmas pageant.

Mount Morris CTE Student Hopes to Make People Feel Beautiful BY M AGG I E F I T ZG I B B O N
A
t 18 years-old, Alyvia Frazer knows what she wants to do with her life. Her goal after graduation is to become a licensed cosmetologist. This Warsaw Central Schools senior is currently enrolled in the Cosmetology Program at the Mount Morris Career and Technical Education Center. By the spring of this year, she will have completed 1,000 hours needed to be eligible to take the New York State Licensing exam. Once Alyvia passes this exam, she will be officially licensed and ready to put her scissors to work. Recently, Alyvia was awarded the Professional Beauty Association Rosy Scholarship. This scholarship recognizes students who show their dedication to bettering the lives of others. According to Yvette Seils, Alyvia’s Cosmetology Instructor, she does just that. “Alyvia is one of those students who has the drive to accomplish anything. She attends extra educational events and participates in SkillsUSA competitions. Alyvia is very well respected amongst her peers,” Seils said. Alyvia chose to enroll in the Cosmetology Program at the Mount Morris CTE Center after she toured the center when she was a 10th grader. She knew the Cosmetology Program was for her. “I love the idea that I can change a person’s mindset and make them feel good about themselves by doing their hair and makeup. That is the reason that I chose this program and to become a cosmetologist,” Alyvia said. Alyvia considers herself to be someone who is attentive to others, which is another reason why she wants to work as a hairstylist. “I really enjoy talking with people and I listen closely to learn how they want their hair styled. Cosmetologists get to meet, listen to, talk with and work with so many different people which is why I will never get bored with my work,” she added. “I once heard cosmetologists described as ‘hairapists’ because people often tell them their problems or concerns.” Seils reiterated how Alyvia focuses on the needs of her customers. “Alyvia pays close attention to detail and is always professional in her appearance. Alyvia thinks before she speaks and communicates very clearly with her clients.”

After she graduates from high school and when she receives her cosmetology license, Alyvia plans to work in a salon. This scholarship will help her purchase items necessary to equip her to start working. Still, her main goal is to always enjoy her work.
“There’s always something to learn in this field such as new techniques and even using new tools, but the

biggest thing is that I will get to meet so many new people. That’s why I know that I will never get bored. I plan to use the scholarship money to buy shears, capes, and anything else I will need to work in a salon,” Alyvia said. As someone who has worked in salons before becoming a cosmetology instructor, Seils agrees that Alyvia will never get bored. She has great hopes for Alyvia. “I see her opening her own salon and having a very successful business. I feel that, eventually, she will circle back and become a teacher.” Alyvia is active in activities and clubs at the Mount Morris CTE Center and at Warsaw Central Schools. Alyvia is a fivesport athlete; she has participated in track, cross country, volleyball, softball and cheerleading at both the JV and Varsity levels. Seils described Alyvia as having a great work ethic. “Honestly, she is a model student and a pleasure to have in class. She is just a great person.”

ENERGY-SAVING TIPS Inspect air vents, faucets and plumbing fixtures. Air vents, faucets and plumbing fixtures attached to exterior walls should be inspected for leaks. Such inspections might need to be conducted from outside the home, which can make it more difficult to detect if cold air is entering the home. Look for gaps in the insulation around these areas, filling in those gaps as necessary.

MAKE BEDROOMS MORE CONDUCIVE TO SLEEP Address allergens. Some people may trace their sleeping difficulties to allergies. Dust and pollen in the bedroom can make for a disruptive night’s sleep. Wash bedding once per week in hot water if dust mites are proving problematic. If pillows cannot be washed, dry them using high heat to kill dust mites. In addition, cover the mattress in a mattress protector that guards against allergens and dust mites. If pollen is finding its way into the bedroom, always keep bedroom windows closed during allergy season.
TYPES OF AERATORS Core aerator: A core aerator uses hollow tines to pull plugs of soil from the lawn. The plugs are left on the surface of the lawn. Homeowners can pick up the plugs or, according to the grass seed experts at Pennington, even leave them in the yard and allow them to break down.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Avoid Predatory Loans From Some Pet Stores
Residential & Commercial
*PICKUP PRICE,
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently read an article about a predatory lender that is targeting people buying dogs at some pet stores. These loans have insane interest rates as high as 130% to 189%! Please warn your readers to avoid taking out high-interest loans to buy a new pet. So many pets are in shelters, waiting for their forever homes. Don’t buy from a puppy mill! -Janie F., Sarasota, Florida

DEAR JANIE: Thank you for sounding the alarm! A recent CBS News report warned about a lending business called EasyPay Finance that charges huge interest rates. Find the article here: https://tinyurl. com/26b8mdcz/ Predatory loans and pet stores that source from puppy mills are a nasty storm of awfulness. Often, puppy mill dogs arrive at the store in poor condition, and new owners who’ve just paid thousands of dollars to buy a dog now have to shell out thousands more for medical care. The message here is clear: Don’t take out a high-interest loan to buy a pet. If you spend time researching the perfect dog for your family, then you should also spend time studying the financial aspects of dog ownership. Do business with reputable breeders -- you should be able to visit the breeder and see the conditions your prospective pet lives in, meet the puppies and their mother, and discuss their care. Good breeders care about their dogs’ welfare. If you’re going to pay thousands of dollars for a pet, choose this route. Shelter pets are another option. If you aren’t breed-specific but want a wonderful companion, contact the local shelter. Adoption fees are a few hundred dollars, but that is significantly less than what puppy mills are charging. And you’ll get a healthy dog that’s ready for a new family. It’s a win-win. Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

REMEDY LANDSCAPE DRAINAGE PROBLEMS When confronted with drainage issues that cannot be remedied by other methods, homeowners may need to install drainage systems. Such systems often employ French drains that are built through or around the perimeter of a property. French drains are typically a trench that contains perforated plastic pipe and is backfilled with gravel. Water runs into these channels and gets swept away by the piping. Do-it-yourselfers may want to try installing drainage systems themselves. However, because excavation is necessary, it’s often best to have the property inspected and marked for utilities, then have the drainage system installed by professionals.

CONTROL CRABGRASS BEFORE IT APPEARS Apply a pre-emergent herbicide. Pre-emergent herbicides kill crabgrass seedlings as they germinate. While these herbicides are highly effective, they must be applied at precisely the right time. The right time to apply them depends on weather patterns. For example, Lowes notes that homeowners who live in regions that might have experienced warmer than usual winters will probably need to apply the herbicides earlier than usual. While the manufacturer instructions should always be followed when applying herbicides, it’s essential that homeowners take weather patterns into consideration as well.

MILLWORK CAN ADD APPEAL & A CLASSIC FEEL
OTHER
Homeowners are discovering that architectural accents can go a long way toward improving both the look and value of their homes. When renovating a space, the term “millwork” may be mentioned by designers and contractors. While it might be a mystery to some, millwork can give rooms unique looks. Millwork refers to items traditionally made from raw lumber in a sawmill. Examples of millwork include crown molding, base trims, door frames, window casings, chair rails, and paneling. Cabinets may also classify as millwork.

OTHER DID YOU KNOW?
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * A garden manicure is what my mother calls it: When working with plants and dirt, rake your nails across a bar of soap. The soap prevents dirt particles from lodging under nails, and the soap washes away easily when you are finished. Happy Gardening! -- JoAnn * “If you have a spade with a long handle, you can transfer common measurements to the handle. Just lay a tape measure alongside the handle, and use a black marker to note common spacing, like feet and inches. Then, when you put in plants, you can check quickly whether they are spaced correctly. Very handy!” -- P.E. in Arkansas * “Garden tool storage doesn’t have to be hard. Fill a wide mouth bucket with clean sand. Add a half quart or motor oil and stir. Then use the sand to clean and store your garden tools like shovels, rakes or hoes. The sand/oil mixture helps clean the metal surfaces, and the heaviness of the container lets you stick them in the sand without fear of everything falling down, like it would if you leaned them along a wall.” -- E. in North Carolina
One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

* Here’s a recipe for a quickie bird feeder or bath: Flip over a nice-size flower pot, and place the pot’s tray on the top. Fill with seed or water. The birds will thank you -- maybe even by eating some nuisance bugs along with the seed. * If the string on your trimmer is always breaking or jamming, try this old trick: Give the coiled string a spray with vegetable oil before you thread it. It lubricates the line, making it less likely to pull and less likely to break. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant. LIVINGSTON EDITION

THE RIGHT WAYS TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Put a professional purpose. Modern standards may suggest that listing a career “objective” is old fashioned. However, it is helpful to customize your résumé so that it is geared toward the position for which you are applying. A career objective may reflect how you are a strong candidate for each specific job you apply for. Use some specifics that tie into to the particular job or company and you may catch the hiring manager’s attention in the process.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Turn computers off at quitting time. Frequently turning computers on and off can produce small surges of energy each time the computer is turned on. But the United States Department of Energy notes that this energy surge pales in comparison to the energy consumed when computers are left on for long periods of time. When going home for the day or leaving your desk for more than 20 minutes, whether it’s during lunch hour or to attend a meeting, turn your monitor off. If you expect to be away from your computer for more than two hours, turn both the computer and the monitor off. Employers who make these suggestions to their employees may reduce their office energy consumption and save money along the way.

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working. EMPLOYMENT
