Call 585-924-8603 DID YOU KNOW? Spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, is the most common cause of mortality in infants. According to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, SMA is a motor neuron disease that affects the central nervous system, peripheral nervous system and voluntary muscle movement. WebMD notes that the severity of SMA varies widely, but the disease is known to weaken muscles and can cause difficulty eating, breathing and walking. In the past, infants diagnosed with SMA typically did not survive more than two years, but the MDA notes that doctors now prefer to avoid making rigid predictions on life expectancy based strictly on age of onset.

National FROG JUMPING D A Y WHICH FROGS ARE THE SAME? National Frog Jumping Day has turned into a tradition that came to life from the idea of a short story. Mark Twain, one of the most famous and celebrated authors in literature, published his first short story named “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” in 1865. The premise of the story is about a man named Jim Smiley, a compulsive better. He trains a pet frog he names Dan’l Webster and bets his frog can jump higher than all the other frogs in town. Inspired by this story, Calaveras County in Northern California started hosting a Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee during the third week of May. Their main event is the frog jumping competition. One frog named Rosie the Ribeter has held the jumping record at 21 feet, 5 3/4 inches since 1986.

STAY SAFE IN BRIGHT DRIVING CONDITIONS

CORBY’S COLLISION

Make sure the windshield is clean. Water marks, dead insects, cracks, and road grime can make it even harder to see out of the windshield when the sun is blazing. Clean windshields regularly, and don’t wait until you’re head-on into the sun to engage the windshield washer spray. Doing so may only further compromise visibility.

CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS

www.gvpennysaver.com Email: mail@gvpennysaver.com

CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

HOW ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES ARE HELPING THE DEAF Telecommunications According to the NDC, telecommunications technology has evolved considerably in recent decades. That evolution has made it easier than ever for deaf individuals to communicate. The NDC notes that telecommunications technology for deaf individuals is an umbrella term that includes telephone devices, platforms and services that are employed when standard phones are ineffective. The NDC identifies three primary telecommunications services:

Vacuum pumping of septics O’Brien’s

1. Video relay service (VRS) 2. Telecommunications relay service (TRS) 3. Video remote interpreting (VRI) Regulated by the Federal Communications Commission, VRS and TRS are free programs, whereas VRI is a fee-based service. TRS is a text-driven service that, unlike VRI and VRS, does not employ video.

Try Rescue Network for Breed-Specific Adoptions

Wednesday, June 15th

The Hunchback of Notre Dame Wednesday, July 20th $99!*

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your recent column about using caution in the purchase of specific breeds of dogs or adopting from a shelter. Please advise your readers that there is a third option. Almost every breed is assisted by a rescue group, usually handled by breeders. Locating such a group for a specific breed can be done by contacting the American Kennel Club (AKC). We had a wonderful Bernese Mountain Dog that was too small to be a show dog, and a Sheltie whose father was a champion but was still too large to be a show dog. This gives adopters the breed they want and dogs who otherwise would end up in shelters -- and possibly be put down -- get a family instead. -- Kathy F. DEAR KATHY: Thank you for highlighting this excellent option. The AKC Rescue Network pulls together over 450 rescue groups, dog breeders and specialists in rehabilitation and rescue to save dogs that would otherwise be placed in shelters or euthanized. Find more information about their work at www.akc.org/akc-rescue-network. Breeds are listed alphabetically to make them easier to locate. Fostering and rehabilitation of dogs through the network is somewhat unique in that dogs stay in the foster/rehab until they are rehomed. Breeders and dog fanciers are among the most enthusiastic participants in fostering and rehabilitating dogs. They take on the expense and time commitment to work with specific breeds and prepare them for a loving family. But they also get to know the dogs, their temperament and their needs -- so that they’re matched with the right people. Check out this network and the work that they do. Thanks again, Kathy. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

EMC Selects Richard D. Thomas for Earth Day Award 2022 US E D BY PE R M I SS I O N O F L I V I N G STO N CO U N T Y, E X PA N D E D

T

he Livingston County Environmental Management Council (EMC) has chosen Richard D. Thomas to receive this year’s Livingston County Earth Day Award. This annual award is presented to an individual or organization to recognize outstanding achievements that are directed to help preserve, improve, or educate about the Livingston County environment. Earth Day is a global event celebrated on April 22, and this year marks the 52nd anniversary. The EMC recognizes Mr. Thomas for his long-term commitment to the health and protection of the natural resources in Livingston County. During Mr. Thomas’ 32-year professional career in environmental law enforcement with the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, he was charged with protecting the natural resources of 11 counties in Western NY, including Livingston County. “The roots of my “I will forever have an environmental ethic appreciation for our natural developed when I was a resources and will forever try young person,” shared Richard Thomas. “My to instill that sense of introduced me to responsibility in others. There parents places like the is nothing more important Adirondacks and the than the quality of our air, our Finger Lakes as well as to hunting. They helped me water, and responsibilities as develop environmental stewards of the planet.” morals, and those were Richard Thomas the building blocks of my interest in conservation.” Mr. Thomas attended Finger Lakes Community College, received his degree in Conservation, and began working for the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). “Growing up, I thought the dream job would be to be what in Livingston County is called a Conservation Officer,” Thomas said. “I am one of the few that grew up to become what I had dreamed of being and for about three decades. Conservation Officers do it all from handling pesticides, medical and hazardous waste, and enforcing returnable container laws to protecting fish and game.” The EMC notes that Mr. Thomas is also known locally for land conservation and protection of his forever-wild 23-acre nature preserve, White Hawk Marsh, and the family Walnut Woods Farm, which he maintains under an active conservation plan. These thriving habitats in the Town of Caledonia are rich with wildlife, pollinators and trees. As a public speaker, he inspires and educates students and the community on natural resource conservation, and makes use of these areas for hands-on learning. “Being a Conservation Officer is about protecting public health and safety, and it has instilled in me a sense of responsibility to others,” explained Thomas. “I will forever have an appreciation for our natural resources and will forever try to instill that sense of responsibility in others. There is nothing more important than the quality of our air, our water, and responsibilities as stewards of the planet. We have an obligation to protect these things.” The EMC was pleased that, upon retirement, Mr. Thomas has continued his passion for environmental appreciation and knowledge through his captivating professional photography business. He shares his expansive photographic collection with others, reaching far and wide.

Livingston County Environmental Management Council recognized Richard Thomas with an award for his extraordinary efforts to protect the environment.

During the Earth Day Award presentation, Mr. Thomas recognized Livingston County for its environmental leadership. In appreciation, Mr. Thomas presented the Board of Supervisors with a framed print of a majestic bald eagle that he photographed in Caledonia. “Livingston County is predominately open space which works with its agricultural community,” continued Thomas. “It is home to the Livingston County Environmental Management Council and the Genesee Valley Conservancy, exceptional organizations. It is critically important to all of us on an emotional level that we continue to set aside open spaces which will remain undeveloped.” The EMC commends Mr. Thomas for his impressive work on behalf of Livingston County. His achievements have contributed to the protection and conservation of Livingston County’s natural resources and to the quality of life for our residents. “I am immensely grateful to Paula Smith who nominated me for this award,” said Thomas. “She recognized me on more of a cumulative level which included both my career and personal life.” Mr. Thomas also expressed appreciation towards Livingston County for recognizing the value of EMC which it established in 1980. “People have to start thinking more about our obligations to everything else we share the planet with than we do personal wealth,” Thomas advised. “We need to ask ourselves how responsible we are to our environmental obligations. We have a long way to go with how we treat our planet.” For more information on the Livingston County EMC and the Annual Earth Day Award: www.livingstoncounty.us/emc

Bumblebee Prejudice You know, why does everyone hate the bumblebees that are just starting to come out this time of year? I, personally, enjoy seeing the chubby things buzzing about the newest dandelions, sipping nectar and loading their leg pockets with pollen. I feel that too many people get the urge to lay a dust-rising stomp on those cute things when they see them buzzing about their business. Well, I have something to say to you, mister, mind your own beezness!

S E V RA Random Act of Kindness! My 13 year-old son and two friends gathered together some change and took scooters over to Byrne Dairy for ice cream yesterday. As they were counting out their coins, two separate, kind individuals offered them a few dollars to help make up the difference. My son said afterward, “Mom, that kind of generosity makes me want to help other people like those folks helped us.” Thank you, whoever you are, for making a positive impression (and for the ice cream)! Money Well Spent! I would like to thank the beautiful young woman who handed me $5. She said I dropped it as I was cashing out at the Salvation Army in Batavia. Thank you so very much for your honesty! May all good and wonderful things come your way. - Mary Answered Prayers Prayers were answered on April 29th by a Batavia woman named Virginia. We were in need of a puppy stroller for our handicapped doxie named Symon. Virginia called us and said she had a stroller to fit Symon’s needs. On Sunday, we took a ride and met this awesome lady at a fast food place. She was very pleasant as she brought the stroller to us. In today’s world, there are still great and awesome people. God bless you, Virginia! Thank you so much. Symon really enjoyed it. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness! - Symon’s Mom

Big Price Tag Our local library proposes spending an estimated $16.6M for a new building. I love the library and use it regularly, as did my children who continue to have a passion for reading, for which I am thankful. While we need to do something to expand the size of our library and its services, this proposal is not it. The community has not had the opportunity to review the “space study” behind the proposal. Additionally, the timing is poor. We are just coming out of a pandemic and facing record-high inflation. Now is not the time to raise the “Library Tax” from just over $800k to $2.5M annually. We need to do something to modernize our Library as well as to expand its size and the services it can deliver; however, I believe there are other options which would better serve our community. I will be voting “no,” but I still love our library. Paying Off Debt Will taxpayers please pay off my mortgage and car loan even though I did sign for them, accepting the responsibility to repay them? What a pile in Washington!

According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

SIGNS OF WINTER LAWN DAMAGE

BLACKTOP SEAL COATING & CRACK REPAIR

Wilted grass: Many things can cause grass to wilt over the course of winter, so homeowners may have to put on their sleuth’s cap to determine why grass that was healthy as recently as late fall is now wilted as the spring bloom begins. Grass that’s adjacent to walkways and driveways might have wilted due to the application of deicing solutions. Such products can prevent the formation of ice on driveways and walkways. However, when they’re tracked onto the grass by people or animals or blown there by winter winds, grass can wilt. A deep watering in spring can flush any lingering solution from the lawn. In future winters, homeowners can be as careful as possible when applying de-icing solutions, making a concerted effort to avoid spreading any onto the grass and limited applications to areas of the driveway and walkways that are not close to the grass.

Gardening pointers for novices People have many reasons for growing gardens, and some of the most popular gardens are plots designated for cultivating herbs and vegetables. Fresh produce at the ready is a great benefit of having a home garden, which also allows homeowners to exercise full control over which products to use to grow robust, healthy vegetables. Novice gardeners may not know where to begin when it comes to planting their first vegetable gardens, and such gardeners can benefit by starting small. You may want to begin by growing plants in containers so they are more manageable and can be moved as you discover which areas of your property provide the best growing conditions. Begin with one or two types of vegetables. Tomatoes, cucumbers and certain squashes are popular starter plants, as they are relatively hardy. Select only a few plants so you are not overwhelmed with the level of care required to maintain your garden. Some gardeners prefer to start plants from seeds, but this will require more time and a greater commitment with regard to maintenance and planting. When just starting out, experiment with small plants that are established and already have a good root system. Consult with your local gardening center for more suggestions, such as which soil amendments to use. Plants may require a certain soil pH that can be adjusted for optimal plant growth. REPLACE ENERGY-HUNGRY APPLIANCES The United States Department of Energy says the average American family spends about $2,200 each year for energy costs, and large, inefficient appliances no doubt contribute heavily to those expenditures. Appliances that are several years old, including refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, and even ovens, may no longer meet the stringent energy-saving specifications required of new items. That means such appliances are negatively affecting the environment and their owners’ bottom lines.

ROOFING & SIDING

KEEP ANIMALS OUT OF YOUR GARDEN

ROOFING

Erect physical barriers around gardens. Barriers may not be gardeners’ first choices, as some people feel barriers such as wire cages or mesh coverings make it more difficult to tend to gardens and rob gardens of some of their aesthetic appeal. But coverings and wire cages can effectively prevent wildlife from trampling or eating plants while still allowing the gardens to get adequate sunlight. Make sure barriers extend to the ground so animals cannot access gardens by entering beneath the barricades.

KEEP ANIMALS OUT OF YOUR GARDEN Install motion detecting lights around gardens. Motion detection technology might be enough to deter nocturnal wildlife from trampling or eating gardens. Animals might be spooked and run away when lights suddenly turn on. A similar approach can be taken using noise instead of lights. Gardeners who hope to avoid erecting barriers around their gardens can put up posts instead, attaching aluminum cans or wind chimes to the posts that will make noise when animals come near. Much like light, noise can be enough to deter animals.

Gardeners What do I need to start composting? Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. Food scraps and yard waste together currently make up more than 30 percent of what we throw away and could be composted instead. Making compost keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. All composting requires three basic ingredients: • Browns - This includes materials such as dead leaves, branches, and twigs. • Greens - This includes materials such as grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit scraps, and coffee grounds.

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County • Water - Having the right amount of water, greens, and browns is important for compost development.

Your compost pile should have an equal amount of browns to greens. You should also alternate layers of organic materials of different-sized particles. HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS

Puzzle Answers This Week

Avocados can benefit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

HOW TO DETERMINE IF IT’S TIME TO DOWNSIZE Space: Many people love the extra space that single-family homes provide. But seniors can take a walk through their homes and see how many rooms they still use on a consistent basis. If much of the home is unused, seniors can probably downsize without adversely affecting their daily lives.

Thyroid cancer is the most common cancer to affect the endocrine system. While many cancers have decreased in prevalence, ThyCa: Thyroid Cancer Survivors’ Association, Inc. indicates incidence rates for thyroid cancer have increased in recent years. The American Cancer Society expects thyroid cancer deaths to increase to 2,200 in 2021 out of an estimated 44,280 people affected by thyroid cancer. Unlike most other adult cancers, thyroid cancer is commonly diagnosed at a younger age. Women are three times more likely to develop thyroid cancer than men. Thyroid cancer is largely treatable, most notably with the removal of a portion of the gland or the entire thyroid gland depending on cancer stage. People who have had their thyroids removed (thyroidectomy) will need to take daily thyroid hormone pills.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Finding the Cellphone That’s Right for You When it comes to buying a phone, there are so many choices that the decision can be difficult. Much depends on what you want to do with it and how much you want to spend. What can we do on our phones? Depending on the type of phone (and our skill level), we can make calls, get voicemails, look at maps, write shopping lists and notes, roam the internet, play games, receive and send text messages, take photos, have face-to-face meetings and more. Some of us, however, would rather keep it simple. We want to make and receive calls, period. If a phone comes with a few more features, that’s fine, but we probably won’t use them. How to choose: Decide what you need the phone to do. Ask a lot of questions, especially of tech-savvy family members. Think about whether you want to pay upfront for your phone or have a long-term contract. Decide whether the phone is only for emergencies or if you’ll use it daily. There are a handful of good phones out there if you search the internet for “phones for seniors.” You’ll find dozens of websites describing the various phones now available. Visit the phone stores near you, if possible. You’ll need to handle the phones to be sure you can read and press the buttons with ease. Smaller phones are lightweight, but aren’t necessarily the best if you can’t see the screen or the buttons are tiny. The bigger ones, on the other hand, might be too heavy. Look into the flip phones as well, the ones that fold in half for ease of carrying in a pocket. Look for discounts. For example, you might get a discount if you’re an AARP member. NEED A COVID-19 BOOSTER? Thursday, May 19 4:00 PM-6:00 PM By Fifi Rodriguez

1st and 2nd DOSE BOOSTERS ARE AVAILABLE

Livingston County Department of Health behind Building #2 (first building on the left) Murray Hill Drive, Mount Morris

Appointments required at:

bit.ly/livcobooster22 For those age 60 and older: The Office for the Aging can help with registration and may be able to help with a ride.

Call (585) 243-7520. Brought to you by the Livingston County Office for the Aging TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Planning a new roof? Choose a light color for cooling benefits. Also check with your home-insurance company to see what discounts it might offer for different styles or options, like upgraded hurricane clips or fire-retardant materials.” -R.E.W. in Tennessee * Cut a cord of firewood in the spring, and cure it yourself. Store it away from the house and properly care for the wood by stacking it where it will have access to the sun and wind to dry it. Let it season for six months or longer, and you’ll have firewood ready when the temperatures drop again. * “If you’re melting chocolate in your microwave, do yourself a favor: Line the bowl with wax paper or parchment paper. The chocolate is still easy to stir, but when you take it out, you can scrape all the chocolate off the paper so that none is wasted!” -- A.A. in Florida

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

* “Place a bit of clear tape over the spot where you are going to drive in a nail to prevent the nail from cracking drywall. It will go right in. Also, if you’re nailing into wood, drag your nail through some soap (bar soap is fine) before striking it. This does the same thing -- it will keep the wood from splitting. You can even keep a travel-size bar of soap in your nail apron for just this purpose.” -P.K. in New Jersey * Shopping for bagged frozen vegetables? Give them the squeeze test: If the vegetables feel hard and solid, they have thawed and refrozen. Choose another bag. * Keep musty smells out of your linen closet by stashing a box of baking soda on one of the shelves, just as you would in the kitchen. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

MANAGING HEART FAILURE IS WORTH THE EFFORT

Serving Our Community

A study by the American Heart Association shows people with HF report spending more time on managing their condition; free app aims to make it easier

for over 20 years. Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology

(NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure. The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted. “It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.” Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips. Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.” Download the app at heart.org/HFPath.

GLUTEN-FREE IS MORE THAN A TREND When someone with celiac disease eats gluten the body mounts an immune system response that attacks the villi, which are small fingerlike projections that line the small intestine. The villi, when damaged, cannot properly absorb nutrients from food. Untreated celiac disease also may lead to the development of other autoimmune disorders like type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

We are trying to contact all patients who missed their appointments during Covid. Please call our office if you do not have your cleaning recall schedule. Thank you for your patience. Please remain safe and healthy.

The intestinal damage from eating gluten often causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating, and anemia, and can lead to serious complications. Following a strict gluten-free diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinal healing.

Remember…Your oral health is important

More companies are producing glutenfree foods and stores are carrying them in greater numbers. In addition, there are a number of new baking flours available that provide alternatives to traditional wheat-based formulas. People with celiac disease or gluten intolerances can use these specially designed flours to make homemade items. Certain flours also may be billed as one-to-one alternatives, meaning they can be substituted for traditional flour in recipes without adjusting the measurements. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

EXPLAINING PRECISION AGRICULTURE How does PA help farmers? Each situation is unique, but the principles of PA can help farmers access a wealth of information. It might have been possible to access such information in the past, but PA has sped up the process and made it more handsoff, allowing farmers to save both time and money. PA technology can help farmers maintain accurate records of their farms; inform their decisions; make it easier to detect and identify problems, sometimes before they escalate into larger issues; and avoid potentially costly mistakes.

Europe more than two years ago. No other symptoms have ever presented. Since that time, I have received every test imaginable, including spirometry, multiple breathing tests, CT scans, X-rays and most recently a bronchoscopy. Nothing was discovered through any of these tests. Other than the cough, I am very healthy. The cough is driving me crazy, however. I have been prescribed every type of medication, and nothing helps. My doctors are at a standstill and have nothing further to offer. I don’t know where to go from here, but I know I can’t live my life with this cough. I avoid a lot of personal interaction because it is so disruptive to constantly be coughing. I would greatly appreciate your help with this, and any advice regarding what steps need to be taken next. -- P.M. ANSWER: Chronic cough (lasting more than several months) is most frequently a result of acid reflux, asthma or postnasal drip, although there are many more causes, including infection, which would be a concern given that you have a clear idea of when it started. Despite an extensive evaluation for cough, it is not that uncommon that people are left with no explanation but with a persistent cough. There are other, less-common treatments at this point, some of which your doctors might not have tried. The first is the medication gabapentin (Neurontin). This is used for a condition called laryngeal neuropathy, and I have had a few spectacular cases where the cough disappears entirely. People have written saying that their doctor prescribed the medication for them after reading it in the column and they also had relief, even after decades of persistent coughing, so I think this condition may be more common than I have ever thought. A second has been a cough suppressant. I am very cautious about using opiate drugs, and it is certainly not appropriate for some people, but cautious use of tramadol in selected patients has been successful in reducing, but not eliminating, cough. Just yesterday in the clinic, one of the residents I supervise had a patient with chronic cough who had dramatic improvement through the use of speech therapy. Looking it up today, I find trials showing significant improvement, if modest, with this approach, as well as several ongoing trials. Given the potential side effects of gabapentin and tramadol, I think I will be making more referrals to my speech and language pathology colleagues, and suggest you speak with your doctors about some of these options. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. In loving memory of Susa Travi To honor her memory and remembering her great love of animals, a donation was made in her name to: Barn Cat Outreach • PO Box 11, Springwater, NY 14560. I invite others who want to honor her memory to donate to this very worthy cause. Her husband, Clarence Travis

Chrysanthemums Also known as mums,? chrysanthemums are frequently included in arrangements of flowers for funeral services. Particularly in some European countries, Korea, and Japan, the white chrysanthemum is symbolic of death, lamentation, and grief; therefore, its use is generally reserved for funeral services. In the United States, white chrysanthemums are often understood to symbolize truth.

Tony was born on July 13th, 1932 to Mary (Winter) and Anthony Diemoz Sr. in Buffalo, NY. He was a graduate of Alexander High School class of 1950, and went on to receive his BS degree at Canisius College. He entered the military in 1954 and was a member of the Army’s Counterintelligence Corps stationed in Tokyo, Japan. After his honorable discharge in 1956, he went on to obtain his MS degree from the University of Buffalo. Tony started his career in education as a history teacher and coach at Byron-Bergen High School and finished as a professor in the Social Sciences Department at Alfred State College, where he was also the head basketball coach. His family moved from Alexander, NY to Nunda, NY in 1967 upon commencement of his career at Alfred State. Tony spent most of his life involved in athletics as a participant, coach and referee. He coached everything from little league baseball to high school golf, cross country and basketball, ending his career coaching college basketball. He was an avid golfer and took great pleasure in attending his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events. He is survived by his wife, Gail (Carpenter) Diemoz. His children, Stephen (wife Nancy) Diemoz, Timothy (wife Kathleen) Diemoz and Renee Diemoz Wager. His grandchildren, Andrew and Bryan Wager, Alexandria, Luke, Benjamin and Nathaniel Diemoz and Marc (wife Sarah) Federico and great-grandson Samuel Federico. A Mass to honor Tony will be planned for a later date. To leave a condolence, please visit www.mertonkaysfuneralhome.com

A turtle is most safe when all of him is tucked into his shell, but he makes no progress until he sticks his neck out. There is always some hazard in everything we do. If we get up in the morning, we may slip in the shower and break a leg. If we never get out of bed, we may develop bedsores. Life is a constant succession of risk-taking activities. We should not let this dismay us. We should do everything possible to minimize the risks, then go ahead, if we expect to make any progress. Let us explain the advantages of making one’s own funeral arrangements well in advance of need. Phone for an appointment in our office or in the privacy of your own home, if you prefer.

HOW TO NEGOTIATE (AND GET) A SALARY INCREASE Salaries in the workplace have long been a hot-button issue for women. The differences in compensation for males and females continues to draw the attention of politicians and gender equality advocates alike. The United States Department of Labor noted that, in 2015, the median weekly earnings for fulltime male workers increased by 2.2 percent from the year prior. During that same period, female earnings increased by just 0.8 percent. That latest data marks the third consecutive quarter that the increase in males’ earnings doubled that of females. On average, women who work fulltime earn 81.1 cents for every dollar men earn. Women aware of that unfair gap in pay may feel helpless to address it with their bosses out of fear of being seen as unappreciative or selfish. In fact, addressing compensation makes many workers uncomfortable, regardless of their gender. According to a salary survey from PayScale, almost 60 percent of male and female workers do not ask for a raise. Negotiating salary increases requires finesse, timing and being informed. It also requires a certain measure of gumption.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE DURING SPRING BREAK It’s that time of year again w hen thousands of college students and young adults w ill flock to the far reaches of the w orld for spring break. W herever your travels take you, it’s best to adopt the Boy Scout’s motto,” Be Prepared.” 1. Arrive safely. Traffic death rates are three times higher at night than during the day. This means an all-night drive to Florida or any other sunny locale is not a good idea. If you can’t avoid night driving, have someone stay up to talk you. 2. Secure your hotel room. M ake sure your door is locked and important belongings like passports and w allets are in the safe. 3. Ensure you know the name of your hotel. M emorize the hotel’s address, and take a card to give cab drivers (especially if you don’t know the language). 4. Protect your personal information. Don’t tell new acquaintances your hotel name or room number. You never know w ho has innocent (or notso-innocent) intentions. 5. Employ the buddy system. Never leave a party w ith a stranger, but if you do, consider carrying a pepper gel key ring w ith you. 6. Practice safe drinking. Alw ays have one friend w ho plans on minimal drinking to look out for everyone and w atch cups and glasses as w ell. Only accept drinks you’ve w atched get made or poured in front of you. 7. Ask for help. If you need help, call yourself. Don’t rely on bystanders to call for you. 8. Drink w ater and w ear sunscreen. Too much time in the sun can leave you dehydrated and at risk for sunburn or sun poisoning. Take a w ater bottle and sunscreen w hen you go out.

DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.
