DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.

PAW’S CORNER

Readers Sound O on Dogs’ Front Yard “Gi s”

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have so many thoughts a er reading the letter from the woman with the shared driveway whose neighbor leaves her dog’s poop on her side.

I’m of the opinion that life would be more enjoyable if people learned to meet others where they are. e dog owner clearly doesn’t want to pick up her dog’s poop, and I don’t think checking with an HOA or municipal ordinance will change that. Maybe she has mobility issues. e writer says she and her neighbor “get along ne,” and there’s a LOT to be said for that. If I were her, I would simply buy poop bags and clean up a er the dog. If the neighbor sees her and says something, I would say: “I’ve asked that you pick up a er your dog, but I don’t want that to become a big issue between us because we get along so well. Your friendship means more to me than my taking a few minutes to clean up the driveway.” -- Susan W., via email

another reader shares their advice:

I have had this issue several times in the past. I have successfully resolved this issue every time it has come up.

I used a new tool to solve it -- the power of social media. My solution was simple: When I observed an individual allowing their canine to defecate on my property, I announced loudly from my front door that if they did not clean it up, I would locate their property and defecate on theirs as well. I made the same announcement on the neighborhood’s Facebook page.

Aside from the occasional beer can thrown out of a vehicle full of teenagers, we have been at peace.

HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS

Do your research. Chances are business owners can find a number of festival or marketplace opportunities in or around their communities each month. Some of these festivals may be large scale events like annual Christmas bazaars, while others might be more toned down affairs that occur each week. Business owners can research local festivals, paying particular attention to how communities market the events and which businesses attend them. Community turnout is another significant factor to consider. Such research can help business owners determine which festivals best suit their businesses and what they’re hoping to accomplish.

SPRING CLEANING PROJECTS YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET

CURTAINS: Curtains also may have absorbed substantial amounts of dust, dirt and debris over the winter. This might be more visible near the end of winter when more sunlight begins to shine through. Clean the curtains in adherence to the manufacturer instructions before you open windows for the season so any wind that blows in does not spread debris onto nearby furniture. Once the curtains have been washed, opening windows may help them dry more quickly.

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR

Determine the charging time of your vehicle: The automotive experts at J.D. Power note that EVs come with different types of charging systems. Level 1 are the most readily available EVs, and these come with a standard 120-volt three prong plug that’s common in modern homes in the United States. That’s convenient, but charging using a Level 1 outlet may take a significant amount of time and only provide a few miles per hour of charging. If you’re renting an EV, confirm which type of car you’re getting and emphasize to the rental agency that you prefer a car that can be charged easily and effectively. One that can be charged overnight and provide hundreds of miles of driving time after a full charge is ideal.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. PREPARE COOLING SYSTEMS FOR WARM WEATHER

HIRE A TECHNICIAN. Air conditioner technicians can be very helpful and will know how to prepare a system for hot weather. Technicians typically conduct multipoint inspections and measure such things as refrigerant levels and duct leakage. Airflow through the evaporator coil also may be checked. If a homeowner suspects the thermostat is not working properly, a technician can verify if that is true and even install a new one if necessary.

TIPS FOR NEGOTIATING WITH CONTRACTORS

Talk about supplies. Even after getting a good bid, you may be able to speak with your contractor about lowering costs even more by choosing less costly supplies. Find out if contractors can source materials from a low-cost supplier. In addition, discuss if you can purchase your own supplies.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE CONVERTING AN ATTIC

Access: Access is another aspect that must adhere to local safety guidelines. Many attics are accessible only through pulldown ladders, but that will have to change if homeowners repurpose their attic spaces. A staircase that complies with local laws will need to be installed, and contractors can work with homeowners to build that and estimate the cost. Homeowners who simply want to put desks in their attics without going with full-fledged conversions are urged to adhere to local access requirements anyway, as they’re intended to ensure residents can safely escape attics in the case of a fire or another emergency.

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL

lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage.

Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

Gray or pink grass: Another indicator of winter lawn damage linked to snow is gray or pink grass. The NALP reports that this is a byproduct of snow mold caused by lingering snow. Action may be unnecessary, as the NALP notes these circular patterns often go away on their own. If not, raking the affected areas might be enough to get the lawn on the road to recovery. If the issue continues to linger after raking, a topsoil application and subsequent seeding may be necessary.

BOLD COLORS ADD VITALITY TO

Whether it’s Independence Day, St. Patrick’s Day or the holiday season, the bold hues that are synonymous with these events add a splash of color to rooms that can use a little design lift.

While some colors may be synonymous with certain times of year, homeowners can employ bold colors in their homes all year long. By embracing bold painting and decorating styles, homeowners can use fresh color palettes to make rooms more inviting and colorful.

Portable vs. Standby Generators

Prepare your home for a power outage (Family Features)

Understanding the distinction between these options will help any family determine which is the better choice for their home.

• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only power a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.

• A standby generator with an automatic transfer switch provides a seamless and permanent backup power solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can power more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Powered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent power management technology has allowed homes to still receive whole-house backup electricity, but with a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past.

With an emergency kit on hand and the right backup power source available, the frustration of weathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

NOW HERE’S A TIP! By

• Store kitchen matches wrapped in tin foil to keep them dry when on camping or shing trips. You can also store them in an empty pill bottle if they are the short kind. If you ll paper egg carton cups with dryer lint and drizzle it with wax, you can cut the cups apart and you’ll have small restarters for your camp res. My family does a lot of camping in the summer, and we use these every time. K.R. in Missouri

• To get scorched pan bottoms clean, scrub with sudsy ammonia and rinse well.

• Baby food jars make wonderful organizer containers; most people know that. But you can make a great rst cup from a baby food jar. Screw on the lid tightly and poke holes along one side. Baby can tip and sip, but not much will come out. ey are just the right size for small hands. M.W. in Alabama

• Baby oil can loosen soap scum from shower doors. Apply and bu lightly with a so washcloth. Follow with a shampoo cleaning or just leave as is. It will repel water and smells nice, too.

• To keep shirt collars from absorbing oil and grime, sprinkle with talcum powder while ironing.

GREAT GIFTS FOR DEAR OLD DAD

Father’s Day is right around the corner, and the time has come once again to begin searching for a gift for dear old dad. Father’s Day gift shoppers have long since abandoned the notion that a new necktie is what dad really wants, but finding a gift that expresses your love and appreciation for the old man can still prove somewhat challenging.

Oftentimes, the best gifts are the ones that fulfill a need or want, and Father’s Day gifts are no exception.

Enjoy dining out with kids

Practice: Daniel Post Senning, the great-grandson of etiquette expert Emily Post and co-author of “Emily Post’s Etiquette,18th edition,” says parents can practice dining out by replicating the experience (as much as possible) at home. Ask the children to use inside voices and exhibit proper behavior at the dinner table.Remove children from the table if they misbehave and try again another time.

Parents also can acclimate their youngsters to dining out by gradually working their way up to more formal restaurants. Start by dining out at a place where table behavior or noise may be more tolerable, such as a fast-food restaurant, before moving on to a casual restaurant and then a nicer restaurant when kids can handle it.

RIDGE’S RESCUE GIVES LOCAL DOGS A SECOND CHANCE AT HEALTH AND HAPPINESS

National Dog Rescue Day is Saturday, May 20th, and I can think of no better way to celebrate than by highlighting an incredible foster-based organization here in Rochester that caters to our favorite canine companions – Ridge’s Rescue, Inc.

KelleyMurthabeganvolunteeringatRochesterAnimalServicesseveral years ago, and she hasn’t stopped since. As an avid animal lover and a big proponent of helping wherever possible, Kelley decided to create Ridge’s Rescue in 2022, a volunteer-run foster-based organization for dogs in the Rochester area.

As a fully volunteer-operated organization, Ridge’s Rescue comprises individuals working together to o er dogs a safe, secure, and loving home. Whether a dog is facing medical needs or behavioral concerns, Ridge’s Rescue works to ensure that each dog has a chance at the life they deserve.

While many of us think of animal rescues as a shelter-based system, Ridge’s Rescue has ipped the script. “ ere’s no brick and mortar, no shelter,” shares Kelley. Each dog is placed in a comfortable and safe home environment while they are being fostered. Most of Ridge’s Rescue fosters come from Rochester Animal Services, and as Kelley shares, each dog has their own medical and/or behavioral needs.

Some dogs have greater needs than others, but Kelley is committed to ensuring each four-legged sweetheart receives the care they need. Because Ridge’s Rescue is completely volunteer-run and operated, all medical costs are covered by the organization itself, volunteers,

Ecosts around $40 per month, dogs can be permanently shielded from the cruel disease.

Ridge’s Rescue and their fosters o en face many hardships that can be devastating for animal lovers out there. However, the joy of watching a dog ourish during their foster placement certainly comes out on top! We o en see before/a er photos when someone gets a haircut or a kitchen gets a full remodel, but seeing photos of a dog upon arriving to Ridge’s Rescue versus when they leave – there are no words for that transformation!

Ridge’s Rescue does not simply rehome a dog. ey allow a dog to be reborn into the life they were meant to have: A life full of belly scratches, cuddles, treats, and ultimately, kindness.

Currently, Ridge’s Rescue has three dogs available for adoption and ten dogs in foster care. Are you interested in getting involved with this amazing organization? ere are several ways to o er your support.

If you would like to be a volunteer, you can help with fundraising events! Ridge’s Rescue regularly hosts events to spread the word about the great work they do and to secure funding to continue their mission. e next event will be held on National Dog Rescue Day – Saturday, May 20th – at Marshall Street Bar & Grill. Entitled “Cornhole for Canines,” the event features a cornhole tournament, ra es, and more!

If you are interested in being considered as a foster home placement, Kelley encourages everyone to reach out through social media (Facebook, Instagram) or via email at hello@ridgesrescue.com. Or consider making a donation or buying items o Ridge’s Rescues’ Amazon wishlist.

Medical costs can escalate quickly, particularly if a dog faces an acute medical emergency that requires surgery or an extended course of medications for treatment. One acute medical emergency that Kelley would like to highlight is heartworm, a deadly but preventable disease. In Rochester, she describes heartworm as an epidemic a ecting dogs coming in and out of the shelter or foster care system.

While heartworm is extremely serious and is fatal for dogs if le untreated, it is completely preventable. “I cannot push enough about heartworm preventatives,” says Kelley. Once a dog gets to the point of heartworm diagnosis, it is a very serious, painful situation sure to cost thousands of dollars for treatment. However, with a medication that

Lastly, spread the word! Whether you decide to follow Ridge’s Rescue on social media or share their mission with your friends and family, every bit of support counts and helps this incredible organization continue their life-saving work for dogs here in the Rochester community.

HOW ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES ARE HELPING THE DEAF Cochlear implants

TheNDCnotesthatcochlearimplantsareelectronicdevicesthatare surgically implanted under the skin behind the ear. Cochlear implants utilize electrodes placed in the cochlea, or inner ear, to stimulate the auditory nerve of individuals who have substantial and permanent hearing loss.

The NDC reports that cochlear implants are not necessarily ideal for everyone with significant hearing loss. That’s because no two brains are the same, and it’s difficult to predict how well a given person’s brain will interpret the new auditory signals the implant is sending. In addition, the NDC notes that certain types of hearing loss cannot be remedied with cochlear implants.

Prescription Costs

$500 for a Month’s Supply

Serving Our Community for

DEAR DR. ROACH: What can you tell me about a prescription of 145 mcg of Linzess, and why a doctor would prescribe a pill over $500? What are the advantages to taking this? Surely, there must be something less expensive that will provide the same results. -- J.P.

ANSWER: Linaclotide (Linzess or Constella) is a medicine used for constipation, either in people with irritable bowel syndrome or in people with constipation for no particular reason. It works by activating a protein to allow chloride and bicarbonate (along with fluid) into the intestine. Since it is not absorbed into the body, it has few side effects. The major side effect is that it can work too well and cause diarrhea. This is enough of a concern that the medicine is not used in children under the age of 2. There are three different strengths: 72, 145 and 290 mcg.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS

Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals.

Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores. Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry.

Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key.

Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.

If you are asking me to defend pharmaceutical pricing, I can’t do that. I very seldom use this medicine because there are so many other options for constipation -- starting with a different diet without using any medicine at all. But in people with occasional constipation despite having a good diet, I usually start with fiber supplements.

If those don’t work, I recommend a surfactant such as docusate (Colace), which allows more water to enter the stool. Yet another option would be nonabsorbable substances like polyethylene glycol (MiraLAX and others), lactulose, sorbitol and magnesium. All of these are much less expensive. However, there are still people who don’t do well with any of these less-expensive (and also tried-andtrue) alternatives. Linzess has made a real difference in the lives of several of my patients. It is usually prescribed by an expert (a gastroenterologist) at least in the case of my patients.

Finally, Linzess is roughly $20 a pill or about $500 for a month’s supply in the U.S. without insurance. Some people only need it occasionally and are very willing to pay, even if insurance doesn’t cover it.

HOW TO SUPPORT A LOVED ONE WITH CANCER

Prepare yourself. Caregivers may be so busy looking into what they can do to help a loved one diagnosed with cancer that they overlook or forget the need to prepare themselves. The ASCO recommends that caregivers process their own feelings about a loved one’s diagnosis before they begin caring for that person. This can ensure their focus is where it needs to be when their loved needs help. In addition, caregivers can do everything to learn about their loved one’s disease ahead of time. Many patients are not forthcoming about their disease, and even those that are may find it physically and emotionally exhausting to repeatedly share the details of their disease with friends and family. Learning the basics on your own can save the patients from these feelings of exhaustion.

GLUTEN-FREE IS MORE THAN A TREND

When someone with celiac disease eats gluten the body mounts an immune system response that attacks the villi, which are small fingerlike projections that line the small intestine. The villi, when damaged, cannot properly absorb nutrients from food. Untreated celiac disease also may lead to the development of other autoimmune disorders like type 1 diabetes and multiple sclerosis.

The intestinal damage from eating gluten often causes diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss, bloating, and anemia, and can lead to serious complications. Following a strict gluten-free diet can help manage symptoms and promote intestinal healing.

More companies are producing glutenfree foods and stores are carrying them in greater numbers. In addition, there are a number of new baking flours available that provide alternatives to traditional wheat-based formulas. People with celiac disease or gluten intolerances can use these specially designed flours to make homemade items. Certain flours also may be billed as one-to-one alternatives, meaning they can be substituted for traditional flour in recipes without adjusting the measurements.

We are trying to contact all patients who missed their appointments during Covid. Please call our o ce if you do not have your cleaning recall schedule. ank you for your patience. Please remain safe and healthy.

All patients of Dr. Eleczko are now being seen at our o ce!

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH

The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soyprotein.TheUSSECalsonotes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeanscontainsfourmilligrams ofiron, thephytateandsoyprotein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaningthatthebody won’t really benefit from the iron. However, theUSSECrecommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorbmoreironfromthesefoods than it will when consuming other typessoyfoods.

DID YOU KNOW? Music courses can have a profound impact on students, potentially helping them perform better in other subjects. A recent study from the American Psychological Association found that high school students who take music courses score significantly better on exams in subjects like math and science than their nonmusical peers. The improved academic performance was more pronounced among students who learned to play an instrument rather than vocal music. The researchers behind the study examined the records of more than 112,000 students in British Columbia. Among the students whose records were studied, 13 percent had participated in at least one music course in grade 10, 11 or 12. Researchers discovered that, on average, children who learned to play a musical instrument for many years and ultimately played in a high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of roughly one academic year ahead of their peers in regard to their English, mathematics and science skills.

Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions. Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise.Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death.

Sandra B. Stone

May 13, 2023

Naples: Sandy passed away on May 13, 2023 at age 79, at home with her family by her side. Born on July 19, 1943 in Watertown, NY to Rev. Willard and Esther Barber, Sandy was predeceased by her grandchild, Grant Stone. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Alan Stone; daughter, Teri (Gary) Gedart; sons, Timothy Stone and Michael (Alana Fuierer) Stone; grandchildren, Anne Marie and Kalley Wilkie, Emily Davies, and Henry, William, Owen, Hope, Ethann and Adelynn Stone; great-grandchildren, Harlow Belille and Evren Davies; brother, David Barber; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. Sandy had a very eventful life, but was challenged early at age seven with polio. She decided then to become a nurse and follow in the footsteps of the hospital sta who had cared for her. A er graduating from Ogdensburg High School, she joined the nursing program at Highland Hospital and earned a certi cate as a Registered Professional Nurse. In 1964, a er marrying Alan, she was employed full-time at ompson Hospital in Canandaigua. As responsibilities for Teri, Tim and Mike increased, her career commitment evolved to part-time. en as she scaled back her nursing duties while raising her children, she remained a “lifetime nurse” who was always on call for friends, family and humanity. Once, she was recognized by Delta Airlines for taking quick action to save an unresponsive infant on her ight.

A consummate outdoor enthusiast, Sandy traveled the world with Alan to hunt, sh, camp and explore nature with indigenous people. No matter the journey, people were quick to recognize and appreciate her energy, kindness and ability to work side by side with di erent cultures.

Sandy took pleasure in decorating her home and bringing her surroundings to life with owers and landscaping, as well as sharing her talents for cooking, knitting and sewing with others. In the early days of the pandemic when masks were scarce, she produced many handmade masks for friends and the local doctor’s o ce. She also donated numerous knitted hats to local children in need.

Sandy was also active in team sports throughout most of her life, playing for many years with the Honeoye women’s so ball league and enjoying volleyball, bowling, and doubles tennis. She also loved attending plays, especially when grandchildren were performing; and always took delight in watching her children and grandchildren participate in sports like basketball, soccer, lacrosse, football, volleyball and tennis.

In recent years, she served as a volunteer on the Advisory Board of the Finger Lakes Area Community Endowment at Canandaigua National Bank, helping to facilitate charitable giving in the region. Her commitment to looking out for others built a strong foundation for teamwork in her family’s numerous business and philanthropic endeavors.

Sandy will always be remembered for her zest for life, skillful pursuit of the many passions that brought her joy, and deep caring for all those around her – family, friends and community.

A private family service will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Honeoye, NY. In lieu of owers, donations in Sandy’s memory may be made to: Hospeace House, P.O. Box 343, Naples, NY 14512.

RAVES

Bad Service

Last week I took my Tacoma to the new oil change place in [local town]. They offer a free state inspection. The next morning I noticed that one of my hubcaps was missing. I checked the inspection report and this hubcap belonged to one of the wheels they removed, When I checked the other wheel they removed, it was not installed properly. I returned to the location and was told "it sometimes happens" and that they "installed them properly.” If they cannot install hub caps properly I would not trust them to touch my engine. Tacoma hubcaps do not fall off if they are installed properly.

Cemeteries Need Money More Than Flowers

Community Spirit

Thank you to Mike and Luke and their employees and staff at Harding's Furniture Store in Mt. Morris for arranging to transport a donated and much needed lift chair to the Teresa House in Geneseo. Thank you for this generous and helpful action. Welcome to the Genesee Valley and for "jumping in" with your charitable community spirit.

Saved The Runaways!

A few days ago our 2 young dogs pushed their way out of the house and took off like a shot. Within seconds they were a few acres away and out of sight. The next thing we knew there were several vehicles stopped on the road including a contractor who was using their lights to alert other drivers. The dogs were with them and came when we called. I was so busy getting the dogs back to the house, I did not even acknowledge those who helped. So, whoever you are, thank you so much for your role in getting the "kids" back to us. That was a real kindness. Thank you, thank you, thank you and God Bless you!!

Regarding the rant about the maintenance at the local cemtery. Being a caretaker of one, I wondered when the last time they donated was. Most small town cemeteries are struggling to get the funds to mow, weed eat, and for maintenance. People spend big money on flowers. How good are they going to look if you can't see them with the grass taller than the headstones. Please donate to your local cemetery. Your loved ones are there along with veterans.

Annoying Dogs

Living in town can be a challenge during the summer months with loud lawn mowers, weed eaters, power washers, etc. But those sounds are to be expected. My complaint is people who tie their dogs outside for hours on end. The dogs literally bark nonstop. Is there no law against this? It is difficult to enjoy gardening or just simply relaxing and enjoying a conversation with a friend with a dog barking constantly. Why do people do this? It can't be good for the dog and it certainly is annoying to nearby neighbors. Please stop leaving dogs tied outside if they are going to bark all day!

QUALITIES TO LOOK FOR IN A POST-RETIREMENT JOB

Engagement: A job seniors find engaging also is more likely to provide the types of benefits seniors are looking for in post-retirement work. For example, researchers at Boston College’s Sloan Center on Aging and Work found that seniors who find a job or volunteering opportunity truly engaging are more likely to benefit psychologically from those experiences than those whose post-retirement work is not engaging. If seniors find themselves simply going through the motions with their post-retirement work, they can look for opportunities that they can be more enthusiastic about.

* On May 23, 1701, at London’s Execution Dock, British privateer William Kidd, known as Captain Kidd, is hanged for piracy and murder. In 1695, Kidd was commissioned to defend English ships from pirates in the Red Sea. When arrested with a shipload of treasure, Kidd’s Whig sponsors failed to back his claims of legitimacy.

How can I keep my plants from being eaten by Japanese beetles? I lost so much over the last 2 years. How can I prepare or prevent Japanese beetles invading our blueberry bushes and one of our trees?

Japanese beetles are not easy to control. Garden centers sell traps that contain a substance attractive to these pests, but often the traps will attract more beetles to your yard. If you decide to try one, place it at least 30 feet away from your attractive plants, and make sure the prevailing wind blows the trap scent away from your plants.

These beetles are large and slowmoving, so they aren’t difficult to remove by hand. I just push them off the leaf into a coffee can of soapy water. Do this every day, or as often as you can, and damage will be reduced. The presence of beetles attracts more beetles, so you can make a big difference, though it’s time-consuming.

I tried covering my plants one year with nylon netting, sold in fabric stores. I used clothes pins to attach it snugly, but they crawled up inside the netting from the bottom.
