REASONS TO SHOP FARMERS’ MARKETS
The vivid colors and smells emanating from farmers’ markets indicate just how fresh and nutritious the offerings tend to be. Farmers who peddle their wares at farmers’ markets adhere to careful farming methods to ensure their foods are as nutritious as possible.
DID YOU KNOW?
One of the more popular tourist attractions in the United States is also a popular place to tie the knot. The bright lights of the Las Vegas strip and the surrounding area have drawn visitors for decades. Las Vegas also is home to more than 100,000 weddings per year, according to Clark County Clerk marriage license records. Weddings may be performed at local churches or other houses of worship, inside lavish casinos, or at the bevy of small chapels in and around Las Vegas. Las Vegas is sometimes referred to as “The Marriage Capital of the World” thanks in part to the ease of acquiring a marriage license in the city and the minimal costs involved to tie the knot. But Las Vegas is more than just a popular place to tie the knot. According to data gathered by Facebook in 2014, when the social media service compiled data from users “check ins,” Las Vegas also has grown into a popular honeymoon destination. In addition, Las Vegas also has evolved into a popular spot to celebrate one last hurrah before the big wedding day. Individuals frequently plan bachelor or bachelorette party weekends that incorporate all of the fun Las Vegas has to offer.

EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE
(NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities.
Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify.
Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits.
Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment.
For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working.
“It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.”
It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.”
Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts.
“I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.”
To learn more, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 or 1-866-833-2967 (TTY). Or visit www.choosework.ssa.gov.

INSPECT YOUR CHIMNEY FOR SAFETY
Inspect the damper. A damper is a valve or plate that stops or regulates the flow of air inside a chimney. It should be checked prior to the first use of a stove or fireplace so homeowners can be certain it opens and closes smoothly.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the National Autism Association, autism is a bio-neurological developmental disability that affects the normal development of the brain in various areas. Those areas include social interaction, communication skills and cognitive function. Autism generally appears before a child reaches his or her third birthday, and the NAA notes it is diagnosed four times as often in boys than it is in girls. Roughly 40 percent of children with autism do not speak, but parents whose children speak between the ages of 12 and 18 months should know that such youngsters can still ultimately be diagnosed with autism. In such instances, the NAA notes that children lose the words they previously learned. Incidences of autism appear to be on the rise, though the reasons for that remain unclear. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of autism had risen to one in every 59 children by 2018. That’s twice as great as the rate in 2004, when the CDC reported one in 125 children were diagnosed with autism.

STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING
Landscaping is typically viewed as a chore by homeowners, many of who enjoy doing some work on their lawns and gardens. But only few homeowners may recognize the potential dangers of lawn maintenance. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that more than 230,000 people per year are treated for various injuries resulting from lawn and garden tools. Common injuries include loss of fingers, lacerations, broken and dislocated bones, eye injuries, and burns. Many of these injuries are entirely preventable if homeowners prioritize safety when tending to their lawns and gardens.

HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION
Maintain appliances and replace older ones. While reducing reliance on energy-thirsty appliances is a great way to reduce energy consumption, no one needs to throw away their refrigerators. Instead, maintain appliances so they are not forced to work harder, and thereby consume more energy, to function. Routinely clean the filters on window air conditioners, replacing them if they’re worn down. In addition, have HVAC units serviced annually to ensure they’re operating at peak capacity. Replace older appliances, including refrigerators, that are no longer effective.
I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green.

November 20th, 1979June 16th, 2014
e moment that you died our heart was torn in two, one side filled with heartache, the other died with you.
We o en lie awake at night, when the world is fast asleep, and take a walk down memory lane, with tears upon our cheeks.
Remembering you is easy, we do it every day, but missing you is heartache, that never goes away.
We hold you tightly within our hearts, and there you will remain. Until the joyous day arrives that we will meet again.

“Absence extinguishes small passions and increases grest ones, as the wind will blow out a candle and blow in a fire…” ~ La Rochefoucauld
This observation by the great French writer and moralist of the early 17th century, explains the apparent contradiction of the two old adages…”Out of sight, out of mind” and “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.”
If an attraction is but a passing fancy, it may very well be eliminated by a period of separation. But, if two people enjoy a great mutual love, an absence…even of prolonged duration…will only increase their devotion to one another.
Thoughtful people may wish to make all arrangements for their own funeral services, well in advance of need. Financial aspects can also be pre-arranged. Out staff will discuss this with you, in your home if you prefer. Phone us, no obligation.

EDavid Steele’s Mission to Preserve Legacies with QSHIM Technology
BY SUZIE WELLS
veryone has a story. From the most famous celebrities to the smalltown neighbor known as the most trusted friend, colleague, maybe expert in their sphere, every person has their own legacy that lingers when they pass. Names, birth/death dates, and maybe a small inscription or poem is featured on a tombstone, but there’s not too much else that lasts.
ere’s so much more to that person, says Caledonia native David Steele. He says he feels cheated in cemeteries, where visitors read so little about the dear departed on headstones and markers. “All of us have stories that transcend time and touch the very essence of our humanity,” he says, but cemetery markers do not allow the breadth of those stories.
Steele says he’s lost more special people than he’d prefer to admit, and when he traverses cemeteries, he notices brass military service medallions on some tombstones and headstones with endearing terms such as Loving Mother or Devoted Father, and is curious about the stories behind those terms.
at curiosity became Steele’s inspiration to leverage modern technology to help share more of the stories and legacies of the departed individuals. QSHIM stands for Quickly Share Historical Information and Memorials: Simple, exterior-grade memorial plaques affixed to tombstones or other surfaces or staked into the ground beside the stone or desired location.
By scanning a QR code on-site, visitors access photos, videos, favorite memories, accolades, even links to notable web resources, social media contacts, or links to GoFundMe pages for memorial opportunities. Steele’s mission is to help preserve people’s cherished memories, experiences, and legacy with plaques directly at a gravesite or historical location.
Steele says QSHIM helps survivors with the grieving process, as they remember good times while culling through material to create content for the QR code’s landing page. ese mementos bring the person’s story to life. People may create their own content to feature, or Steele says QSHIM staff can help people create content from physical documents.
Steele typically eschews social media, but is proud to have developed the so ware to help the lasting legacy of his community. He rationalizes that if people are going to use technology, “I want to do something positive with it.”
e plaques are inexpensive and account creation is intentionally simple to allow great accessibility. He wants everyday Americans to be able to share the stories of their loved ones, li ing positions we o en take for granted (such as those devoted friends or loving mothers).
Both 1993 Caledonia graduates, Steele and his wife, Tanya, raise their six children (Timothy, Annabelle, Sarah, Caleb, Philip, and Freddy) there. Steele says he and his wife spent a short stint in rural Maine where his wife, Tanya, worked as a physician assistant and David developed his contracting company. e couple missed family and the way of life in Western NY, though, so they returned to raise their family here.
Steele says the small town “is one of the most pleasant and relaxing places you will ever visit. Here, everyone knows everyone else, and we
all have a bond that is special and hard to explain.” In his formative years, Steele enjoyed learning about the town’s origin and history, and as got older, he investigated further.
As Steele learned more and more about the small town he grew up in, he realized that his curiosity to uncover the town’s legacy had transformed him. He says, “I no longer saw our town as just the place where I grew up. It is a thriving community filled with stories that deserve to be shared.” When he attempted to share local stories he learned in the local newspaper, he says the next generation tended not to read the newspaper much, so the QSHIM historical plaques became the “missing piece” he had been searching for to connect with the next generation.
is way, he says, “ e town’s legacy is no longer confined to the pages of history books; it is a living, breathing entity that reminds us of the strength of community, the power of unity, and the importance of understanding where we came from.”
David hopes the QSHIM helps share and preserve the legacy of community members and historic sites, bringing a dynamic light to sites, potentially like a scavenger hunt. “By tapping into kids’ natural curiosity and love for exploring, you can turn your historical site into a place where the past doesn’t seem so far away … [instead] ready to be explored by the next generation.”
Steele sees a multitude of uses for QSHIMs, including for use by corporations during fundraisers, training, and team-building events, or to transmit information in hospitality-related fields, but memorials and historical applications ring most true to Steele’s heart. Helping share people’s stories with the next generations is key. qshim.com

Here’s A Tip
• Use a bandanna to strain coffee if you've accidentally had a filter bust. It works. I first used this tip when camping, but I have used it at home, too. e coffee goes through it faster than a paper filter, which is fine when it's already brewed, since you lose less heat. T.R. in Arkansas
• Recycling notes: Cardboard that's greasy or foodcaked is just not recyclable. It's trash. On the plus side, your glass jars don't have to be perfectly clean, nor your cans crushed, in order to take them to the recycling center or drop curbside if your community has a plan in place.

HOW TO FIND A HOBBY
Commitments to work and family can make adults feel like they have little time for much else. But finding time to pursue hobbies can benefit men and women in various ways.
A form of escapism that can provide a much-needed respite from the hectic pace of daily life, hobbies can help men and women reduce stress by forcing them to focus on something other than the source of their stress. In addition, hobbies can be a great way to meet new people, an important benefit for working parents who may otherwise find it difficult to meet new people.
Finding a hobby may take some trial and error, as adults may find activities that once appealed to them no longer do, while other pursuits may require more time than men and women can reasonably devote. Adults looking for a hobby can consider the following strategies as they begin their pursuits.
Think back to childhood. A childhood passion may provide the perfect starting point as adults look for hobbies. For example, adults who enjoyed painting as children may find they still know their way around a canvas and palette.
Ask around. Adults who want to find a hobby to foster social connections can ask friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers to recommend activities. This can help men and women make connections in their communities and/or reconnect with friends or family members with whom they have fallen out of touch.
Think small. Because there is often some trial and error in finding a rewarding hobby, it makes sense to avoid making too big a commitment right off the bat. Before buying lots of expensive equipment or materials or making a large time commitment, give yourself some time to try a hobby on for size. The first activity you try might not necessarily take, and walking away won’t sting as much if you had not committed much time or money.
Consider coaching or mentoring. Athletes who still have a passion for their favorite sports but can no longer meet the physical demands such sports require can stay involved by coaching youth sports. The same can be said for professionals passionate about their work who choose to mentor. These activities might not be traditional hobbies, but they offer a great way for adults to pursue their passions on their own time.
Hobbies can enrich our lives and provide respites from the daily grind.

SIMPLE STRATEGIES TO BE A MORE EFFICIENT DRIVER
Avoid idling. Idling was once advised to warm up vehicles so they did not stall once they leave the driveway and hit the open road. However, that stalling occurred when cold carburetors could not get the appropriate mix of air and fuel in the engine. But carburetors have long since been replaced by electronic fuel injection systems, negating the need to warm up a vehicle to avoid stalling. The Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy note that modern engines will warm up by being driven and urge drivers to avoid warming up their cars for more than 30 seconds.

My neighbors have been doing a No Mow May and I’m worried about ticks. What can I do to protect my lawn and gardens from ticks?
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County
Embracing a change in mowing habits throughout the year, rather than just in May, can have a multitude of benefits for your landscape. By allowing your lawn to grow to a height of 4 inches before mowing, you create an environment that isconducivetothesurvivalandflourishing of beneficial insects. These insects play a crucial role in pollination, pest control, and overall ecosystem health. When you mow at a higher height, you provide shelter and food sources for beneficial insects such as bees, butterflies, and ladybugs. These insects contribute to the pollination process, ensuring the reproduction of plants and the production of fruits and vegetables. Additionally, theyactasnaturalpredators, keeping pest populations in check and reducing the need for harmful pesticides. While your neighbors embrace the No Mow May movement, it is still essential to ensure the protection of your lawn and gardens against the threat of ticks. Maintain regular lawn mowing practices, diligently remove leaf litter and brush piles, and utilize effective tick repellents.
e
Additionally, establish barriers between your outdoor spaces and potential tick habitats. Remember to don protective clothing and apply insect repellents whenever venturing outdoors. By implementing these precautions, you can effectively minimize the risk of ticks while respecting your neighbors’ commitment to No Mow May.
Furthermore, with every choice we make to be sustainable there are trade off. I believe this change in mowing habits promotes healthier soil and reduces the need for excessive watering and fertilizers. Longer grass helps to retain moisture, reducing water runoff
andpromotingwaterconservation.Italso encouragesdeeperrootgrowth, resulting in a more resilient and drought-tolerant lawn. Keeping your grass at 4” doesn’t promote ticks as they prefer un-mowed grass.
So,by extending your mowing practices beyond May and maintaining a higher grass height of 4 inches, you not only create a welcoming habitat for beneficial insects but also contribute to a healthier and more sustainable landscape overall without increasing the tick population.

To my neighbor who cut down the linden tree
The youth T-Ball/T-Shirts Commissioner, Josh! Your dedication to the kids did not go unnoticed. Coaches, parents, and kids alike have you to thank for a successful and fun season. We hope to continue with you as lead in the next year. Thank you again for everything; this baseball season was a great one!
Home Safe
I loved the linden tree you cut down. Its leaves filled our windows. Its blossoms scented our house and yes, its leaves fell into our yard and its sap left drops on the car, but I didn’t care. I loved its shade and watched eastern bluebirds and robins and woodpeckers in that tree. I am heartbroken and will grieve its loss a very long time. I will also transplant one of its seedlings from my flower bed and hope I live long enough to see it grow into a tree half as big as the one you destroyed. Trees are a gift, especially as summers grow hotter. I would gladly have raked its leaves for you if that was the reason. All you had to do was ask. But people here rarely talk with one another. We may be neighbors but no one is very neighborly and while you think something on your property is yours alone, know that your tree was also my tree and that what you do affects our entire community. Let’s please do a better job of being neighbors to all the living things we are lucky enough to live with.

On June 5, 2024, our dog went missing. I immediately shared the news on Facebook and contacted the Hamlin Dog Shelter. Soon after, a neighbor relayed that her friend had spotted a couple with a brown dog on the parkway. During our search, the Hamlin Dog Control Office informed us that they had found her, and she was safe at the shelter. The couple had notified law enforcement who stayed with our dog until Dog Control Officer Dave Maynard could pick her up. We were lucky in this situation and are deeply grateful to the observant passerby on the parkway, our caring neighbors, the couple who looked after her, the police, and Dave Maynard for their part in bringing our dog back to us. The closeknit nature of a small town certainly has its benefits. A sincere THANK YOU to all who were involved.
Several times I saw a person with a department store blue uniform/vest going into work. They parked in the closest handicap spot. This person had no wheelchair, no cane and seemed to walk just fine. I have to wonder how he’s able to work yet can’t walk into work unless using the closest spot. I’m so tired of people with all these handicap tags abusing the system. I SAW THE PERSON INSIDE WALKING around. How many hours is this spot going to be taken when others who truly need it don’t have it available? Another problem is people sitting in the handicap spot waiting for people. A suggestion would be dropping them off by the door and then sitting in front of the store. If you’re in your vehicle you’re not going to get a ticket. There’s not enough handicap spots for the people who abuse them and the people who truly need them.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Does Intermittent Fasting Raise the Risk Of Heart Disease?
DEAR DR. ROACH: I read a recent headline that said people who fast intermittently have an increased risk of heart disease. Is there merit to this story? -- K.O.S.
ANSWER: Intermittent fasting is an increasingly common weight-loss strategy. The two most common approaches of intermittent fasting are alternate-day fasting (eating nothing one day, then whatever you want the next) and timerestricted feeding (eating at certain times throughout the day, usually during an eight-hour time frame).
The published data on the benefits of these diets show short-term weight loss (i.e., 12 weeks), but no long-term weight loss (1 year), compared to the standard dietary advice.
There is evidence of potential harm from intermittent fasting. Studies have shown an increased risk of eating disorders (particularly binge eating). One study showed that disordered eating worsened in those assigned to an intermittent-fasting schedule. However, other studies do not show this.
The concern for disordered eating is highest among younger and female populations, who are at the most risk for eating disorders, and I advise against intermittent fasting for a person with a history of an eating disorder.
The study you read about was presented as an abstract in the March meeting of the American Heart Association; it is not yet published or peer-reviewed. But it did show that people who report an intermittent-fasting diet (specifically those who ate over an 8-hour time frame) were at a higher risk for death from heart disease than those who ate over a 12-16 hour time frame.
However, this wasn’t a controlled study, and it is likely that people who chose a time-restricted eating pattern already had issues that put them at a higher risk for heart disease. Still, given the absence of long-term benefits, I don’t generally recommend a time-restricted diet or intermittent fasting to my patients.
My colleagues in weight medicine consider intermittent fasting to be an option that helps a subset of people. There are some people who do benefit from this type of diet, and as long as they are eating well and are being monitored by their physician, they should continue to follow their diet if it is working for them.

BANISH MOSQUITOES FROM YOUR YARD
Time spent in the backyard on spring and summer afternoons and evenings contributes heavily to the popularity of these times of year. Many homeowners go to great lengths to make their outdoor living spaces as luxurious as possible, only to be bothered by uninvited and bothersome guests: mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes are not just pesky nuisances, but they’re also harmful. According to the American Mosquito Control Association, more than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Such diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever, West Nile virus, and the Zika virus.
The AMCA notes that many of the diseases transmitted by mosquitoes can be linked to travel to endemic areas. But mosquitoes in North America can still be harmful, and bites may result in severe skin irritation through an allergic reaction to mosquito saliva.
Held every other Wednesday starting at 6:30pm via Zoom.

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Password protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone owners password-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, you could make it very easy for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity.
Review your social network privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social network sites. As the use of social networking continues to increase, it’s expected that the use of malware will rise, too. Cybercriminals are always looking for ways to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of what apps you install, and never “friend” someone you don’t know.
Consider getting extra protection. There are a growing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as well as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, Mobile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity Monitoring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.

Balance engagement with patience. NFIB® recommends that business owners tone down their sales efforts without coming off as disengaged. Warmly welcome visitors to the booth or stall and express a willingness to discuss products customers appear interested in. But keep in mind that many people attend festivals and marketplaces to browse, so give them space after welcoming them to the booth.

PAW’S CORNER

Time for summer fun with your dog
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dad finally let us adopt a puppy a few months ago, and I can’t wait for summer vacation, when I can spend all day with him! He’s got lots of energy, but we’ve been training him to follow commands so he doesn’t run off. What are some outside games that I can play with him? -- Kerry B., Winchester, Virginia
DEAR KERRY: You’re going to have a wonderful summer! It sounds like you and your family have been diligent about training your dog in basic obedience so that he’ll come back to you on command, sit and stay in place. And he’ll be old enough -- and have his most important vaccinations out of the way -- to stay healthy outside or when encountering other dogs.
Here’s a few great off-leash games to play:
Fetch: e gold standard game for dogs remains a favorite. Just grab a tennis ball and toss it.
Frisbee: Energetic dogs can chase these flying discs all day.
Agility training: Start with simple tasks like going under or over obstacles.
Swimming: Fill a kiddie pool in the backyard and let your dog splash around on a hot day.
Tracking: Have your dog follow a line of treats to a “jackpot” (a toy or food). Extend the distance between treats each session.
Remember, only take your dog off leash in a safe area or approved offleash location. A fenced-in backyard is ideal, but if you don’t have one of those, go to a dog park or municipal, state or federal park that has an off-leash area. Some of these games, like agility and tracking, can be done on-leash. Most importantly, have fun!

LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY
Watch out for social media. It’s best to keep resignation plans to yourself and off of social media. GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
Take more time off. According to the “State of American Vacation 2016” report from Project: Time Off, American workers failed to use 658 million vacation days in 2015. Vacation is not just a time to get away, but a valuable, effective way for workers to recharge. The APA notes that avoiding the negative effects of chronic stress and burnout requires workers to take time away to replenish and return to their pre-stress level of functioning. Taking time off to disconnect from work and avoid thinking about work can be just what workers need to overcome their work-related stress. And plenty of workers have the time to take off; they just need to take it.

NETWORKING STRATEGIES FOR THE DIGITAL AGE
Personalize your connections. The days of sharing a post-work drink with a colleague may be over. But networking in the digital age need not be impersonal. When using professional networking sites such as LinkedIn, personalize the messages you send to other professionals when inviting them to join your network. Use the message to briefly introduce yourself and explain your connection before explaining why you want the person to become part of your network. Welcome any questions and warmly thank them for their time. This personal touch can make you stand out in a digital sea of people, many of whom simply want to add other professionals to their network without necessarily making genuine connections.
