DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

Make things easy for customers: Cash was once king at community festivals and marketplaces, but the convenience of plastic and even touch-less payments has long since replaced hard currency as consumers’ preferred method of payment. In fact, a recent study from Visa found that contact-less payment usage in the United States grew by 150 percent between March 2019 and March 2020. Card readers are inexpensive and easy to use. Businesses can still accept cash payments, as accepting both cash and card increases the chances of making more money.

HOW TO HELP SENIORS ADAPT TO AUTOMOTIVE TECH
an yo Livingsto Count for voting us runner up in the Auto Repair Category!
Learn the tech yourself: Assistance technologies are not all one and the same. Vehicle manufacturers have their own systems and there can be a learning curve when adapting to a new one. If you aspire to teach a senior how to utilize the assistance technologies in his or her vehicle, first learn the tech on your own. If both you and your aging friend or family member own a Subaru, chances are you already know how to use the tech in your loved one’s vehicle. If you drive cars made by different manufacturers, visit the dealership where your loved one bought his or her car and ask for a quick tutorial on all the safety features in the vehicle. Salesman demonstrate these features every day, so it shouldn’t take long for them to show you the ropes.

Thank you! Recently, Berkeley Brean (Channel 10 Investigative Reporter) drew attention to the lack of Monroe County medical transport for people who need to be moved by stretcher from home to medical appointments. Thanks to Berkeley’s news segment and Rochester Medical Transport’s efforts on our behalf, we were able to get my husband from our home in Henrietta to an essential appointment at the Spine Center on Ridgeway Avenue. Please know that this retired military man and his family thank you from the bottom of their hearts! - Jim R., his wife Sandy, & daughter Tonya Returned Wallet Thank you so much to the person who returned my wallet to ESL in Brockport. You have renewed my faith in humanity. Elementary School Art Show Our granddaughter invited us to attend the Avon Elementary School Art Show on Wednesday, June 15th. What a show! The students, from all grades, exhibited their fantastic works of art produced under the guidance of their art teacher, Nicole Rowley. While viewing the art, the Avon High School Senior Jazz Band, directed by Charlotte Collins, played jazz tunes for all to enjoy. What an awesome, talented group of musicians! We totally enjoyed our entire time there and would especially like to thank Mr. Rob Lupisella (retiring Elementary School Principal - we will miss him!) for making the event possible. Thank you, also, to all the school staff and students for an amazing experience.
A Response I hope I am not the only one disturbed by a rant titled “Stupid Idea.” This is an irresponsible and reckless [rant]…and is truly hate speech. Wishing ill upon others, whether or not they agree with your beliefs, is morally wrong. Additionally, the author of this rant has no idea if any of the Texas victims or their families were for or against gun control…again, totally irresponsible. As disturbing as this rant is, I find it unacceptable that it was printed at all. Free speech is one thing; hate speech is completely unacceptable. Please vet these comments more carefully. Thank you. Dear readers - we agree. This one got by us and we apologize for printing the rant as submitted. Thank you. ~ The GVPS Management Team Expiration Dates A word to my fellow shoppers and stores. Lately, it has become common that food on the shelves is not properly rotated anymore. Check the expiration dates more carefully. None of us have money to waste. Stores are having a hard time hiring and training, and unfortunately that leads to this problem that we are all too busy to notice. Face Traffic I live on [local road] in [local town]. We’re across from a school. There are kids around the corner from us who walk home with their backs to traffic. I can’t tell you how many people we see doing that along this busy road! Most are listening to their phones and cannot hear traffic behind them, are texting on their phones, or are walking two or three abreast with one of them walking on the side line with no idea what is coming up behind them. Adults should know better, but they don’t! I am begging parents to talk to their children about walking facing traffic so that they see what is coming at them. This could save their lives!

HARDSCAPE AND HOW TO USE IT
Huckleberry Paving
Choose a theme. The right style allows hardscaping and softscaping materials to work together. For example, homeowners may want to give their yards an eastern feel, complete with a koi pond and decorative bridge or trellis. A formal English garden, however, may include manicured paths with stepping stones and ornate topiaries. Mixing too many styles together can take away from the overall appeal. The pros suggest looking at the overall plan of the design, even if all of the work can’t be completed at once. This way the eventual finished project wil be cohesive.

Powder rooms can be an ideal spot to experiment with paint colors. Try deep colors that can make the area seem intimate and even exotic. HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION Curtailing energy consumption is a great way for people to protect the planet’s natural resources and save money at the same time. Part of the difficulty with regard to reducing energy consumption is that energy plays such a big role in our lives. Smartphones and tablets have become must-have items, and these items, though not necessarily big consumers of energy, must be plugged in and charged. But individuals won’t have to unplug from their lives to reduce their energy consumption. In fact, there are several easy, non-invasive ways for everyday people to reduce their energy consumption. Reducing energy consumption does not require substantial sacrifice, but it can produce substantial savings and benefit the planet in myriad ways. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.

Dorothy H. Jenks, 95, having lived in Ithaca for 92 years, died peacefully in her home, June 17, 2022. Dottie moved to Avon, NY to be closer to family and has resided for the past 3 years in her own apartment. Born July 15, 1926 in Ithaca, she was the daughter of the late Harold D. and Teresa Miller Jenks. Following an internship from a business course in her senior year at Ithaca High School in 1944, she was directly employed with GLF/Agway, as a Production Manager and remained with them for 25 years. After the company moved to Syracuse, she made the decision to remain in Ithaca with her mother and embarked on a new career for 25 years as an Advertising Coordinator and Publications Manager with Ithaco, Inc., a parts manufacturer of space satellites. Dottie was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Ithaca for many years and United Methodist Church after moving to Avon. She was an enthusiastic supporter of many Ithaca organizations such as Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, Museum of the Earth, Lab of Paleontology Research, among several others. She was fiercely independent all her life, enjoyed many hobbies and loved traveling in her many new Ford vehicles – “Arabela” being her first. She lived with and lovingly cared for her Mother for many years and was an avid golfer, knitter, reader, and her claim to fame: candy maker. She loved spending time with her family and took such pride in doing for others - a life well lived! She is survived by her sister, Lillian Johnson of Avon and Lillian’s 5 children, David (Lynn), Diane (Doug), Alan, Nancy (George) and Karen (Garry), along with 21 great-nieces and nephews; nephew, William Jenks of OH; niece-in-law, Marcia Jenks of Auburn and several grand-nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Dottie was predeceased by her brother, William; sister, Jeanette; and nephews, Theodore Jenks and Harold Jenks. We are extremely indebted during the last year of her life to many wonderful caregivers and family members along with the Livingston County Hospice. Arrangements will be made with the Stephenson Dougherty Funeral Home in Avon and she will be interred in the East Lawn Cemetery in Ithaca where there will be a private service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made with the Livingston County Hospice, 2 Murray Hill Drive, Mt. Morris, NY 14510, the Avon United Methodist Church, 130 Genesee Street, Avon, NY 14414 or the charity of your choice. To share a memory or send a condolence visit stephensondoughertyfuneralhome.com

COPING WITH THE LOSS OF A LOVED ONE WHILE SOCIAL DISTANCING Host calls with family members and friends. The video telephone and chat service Zoom has helped millions of people stay connected with loved ones while social distancing. Schools and universities even employed the service when in-person classroom sessions were canceled to stop the spread of the virus. The CDC recommends grieving families employ such technology to connect with each other in the wake of a loved one’s death.
“Every time you look in a mirror, catch yourself smiling…” ~ Scandinavian adage
We’ve all heard the old expression, “laughter is the best medicine.” Now the medical profession has confirmed the wisdom of this adage. We now know that anger, which increases the heartbeat and blood pressure, injures only the person who is angered. Conversely, the ability to relax and to laugh easily does much to improve one’s health. So, let’s all learn to smile more. Let’s not let petty annoyances get us down. We may increase our life expectancy while making life for ourselves and those around us much more enjoyable. We can arrange for a religious ceremony even where there is no regular church affiliation. We can provide an appropriate service at a cost within the means of any family. For more information, phone. There is no obligation, of course.

Robert B. Wegman Lodge at Rochester Rotary Sunshine Camp Renovated Through Wegman Family Charitable Foundation Grant BY T I M ampers at the Rochester Rotary Sunshine Camp will benefit from a newly renovated Robert B. Wegman Lodge and from a spruced-up camp, thanks to a generous grant from The Wegman Family Charitable Foundation and the volunteer work of Wegmans employees. The Wegman Family Charitable Foundation granted $225,000 to renovate the Wegman Lodge, the camp’s gateway where campers are welcomed each summer. Renovations, which will directly benefit children with paralysis and other physical challenges who attend the camp, included: • Improved acoustics through new ceiling baffles that minimize loud sounds that can be challenging for children who have autism • A vinyl plank floor to improve safety through increased slip resistance • Installation of an energy recovery ventilator, in-system UV lights and air conditioning to help campers with sensory issues by providing a cool place to eat meals • A new accessible stage ramp and refinished flooring • Kitchen improvements for safety and efficiency • A new picnic pavilion for increased dining space As part of Wegmans’ participation in United Way’s Day of Caring, Wegmans employees volunteered their time from May 16 to May 19, 2022, to help clean up the camp and get it ready for the summer. Nearly 150 employees participated in the multiple “Days of Caring” at the camp. Rochester Rotary, Wegmans President and CEO Colleen Wegman and Wegmans employees held a lodge re-dedication celebration on May 18, 2022. “We are extremely “My Grandfather always grateful to the Wegman family had a special place in his for this generous grant and heart for the Rochester Rotary Sunshine Camp and for Wegmans employees who the amazing experiences devoted their volunteer time they create for children with disabilities,” said Colleen to our camp.” Wegman, president and Tracey Dreisbach CEO of Wegmans Food Markets. “It’s been so incredible to see our employees come together to support the camp and its campers over the years, and it was particularly special for all of us to give back to this remarkable organization in celebration of their 100 years serving our community.” Rochester Rotary Executive Director Tracey Dreisbach said, “Wegmans has a long history of supporting Sunshine Camp, from the Wegmans LPGA golf tournament to employee volunteer workdays. We are extremely grateful to the Wegman family for this generous grant and for Wegmans employees who devoted their volunteer time to our camp. Both these efforts will directly benefit the 2,500 campers with disabilities who attend our camping program each summer.” 2022 marks the centennial year of Rochester Rotary Sunshine Camp, a fully accessible residential summer camp that serves children with disabilities and their families. Originally located on 23 acres of land near Durand-Eastman Park when it opened on June 12, 1922, the camp relocated to its current 157-acre site in Rush in 1974. Sunshine Camp provides a unique camping experience that area children cannot get anywhere else, including a fully accessible tree house, a sensory center (Gizzi Family Sensory Center), a fully accessible playground (Shirley’s Playland), a climbing wall, zip line, splash pad, archery, boating, fishing, miniature golf, swimming, and arts and crafts.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the Alzheimer’s Association, people with a parent or sibling with Alzheimer’s disease are more likely to develop the disease than those who do not have a first-degree relative with Alzheimer’s. In addition, those who have more than one firstdegree relative with Alzheimer’s are at an even greater risk of getting Alzheimer’s. Though family history is not necessary for an individual to develop Alzheimer’s, the AA notes that researchers have identified hereditary Alzheimer’s genes. For example, researchers estimate that between 40 and 65 percent of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s have the APOE-e4 gene. APOE-e4 is characterized as a risk gene because it increases the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s but does not guarantee it will happen. The gene is inherited from a parent, and people who inherit two copies of APOE-e4 from their mother and father have a higher risk for Alzheimer’s than those who inherit one copy of the gene from their mother or father. The AA also notes that researchers have found deterministic genes that cause Alzheimer’s. However, these genes are rare and have only been found in a few hundred families across the globe, accounting for 1 percent or less of all Alzheimer’s cases.

MANAGING HEART FAILURE IS WORTH THE EFFORT A study by the American Heart Association shows people with HF report spending more time on managing their condition; free app aims to make it easier
(NAPSI)—The American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, shared this month that more heart failure patients and their caregivers report they are putting more effort into managing this complex condition. In 2015, just 55 percent of survey respondents said they were working harder to manage HF. The latest study shows a 14-point increase, with 69 percent now putting effort toward the important daily task of managing heart failure. The AHA conducted its annual survey as part of the Rise Above Heart Failure initiative, nationally supported by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation, and found that while those diagnosed with heart failure and their caregivers are spending more time and energy managing the disease, they are benefiting. These two groups showed an increased understanding of heart failure since the survey was last conducted. “It’s important to understand heart failure or any condition you have been diagnosed with,” says John Osborne, M.D., cardiologist and American Heart Association volunteer. “It allows you to ask better questions of your healthcare providers and take an active role in your health.” Through Rise Above Heart Failure, people living with heart failure can access free tools to help make the daily task of managing medications, symptoms and doctor’s visits simpler. This includes an app called HF Path, designed to keep all aspects of heart failure management at a patient’s— or caregiver’s—fingertips. Heart failure, which occurs when the heart is not able to efficiently pump blood around the body, can cause symptoms like breathlessness, persistent coughing, swelling and fatigue. “It’s important for heart failure patients to track their symptoms day to day so they can alert their healthcare provider to any warning signs of worsening HF and get prompt treatment,” said Osborne. “World Heart Day serves as a great reminder to us all to make a promise to better understand and advocate for our own health.” Download the app at heart.org/HFPath.
DID YOU KNOW? The human papillomavirus, often referred to as HPV, is a group of more than 150 related viruses. According to the American Cancer Society, HPVs are called “papillomaviruses” because some types cause noncancerous tumors known papillomas, or warts. Some types of HPVs are known to cause cancer, including those of the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, anus, and parts of the mouth and throat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 79 million people in the United States are currently infected with HPV. HPV vaccines can be very effective, preventing infections that can cause six different types of cancer, but are most effective when administered to older children and teenagers. The ACS notes that doctors recommend boys and girls receive the HPV vaccine at age 11 or 12. In such instances, boys and girls will receive two doses of the vaccine six to 12 months apart. While the vaccine can be administered later, kids or even young adults who do not receive the vaccine when they are between the ages of 15 and 26 will need to receive three doses within an eight-month span. Core muscles are activated when doing everything from taking out the trash to getting dressed. If those muscles are weak, the cumulative effect of that weakness can add up and contribute to aches, pains and other health problems. Strong core muscles make daily tasks easier and less taxing on the body, providing both short- and long-term benefits.
LIFESTYLE CHOICES TO REDUCE CANCER RISK Exercise regularly: Physical activity can lower estrogen levels, reduce levels of insulin in the blood, help a person lose weight, and reduce inflammation - all factors that contribute to the formation of cancer. Experts recommend 150 minutes of moderateintensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise a week.

SOY FOODS PACK A POWERFUL PUNCH The Cleveland Clinic notes that soy foods provide a host of nutritional benefits. Plant protein, including soy, can provide cardiovascular benefits, including helping with people with high blood pressure lower their blood pressure to healthier levels. While many people rely on animal-based proteins to get their daily recommended intake of protein, soy foods are naturally free of cholesterol and low in saturated fats. That makes soy foods more heart-healthy sources of protein than animal products. The Cleveland Clinic says substituting soy foods for animal-based proteins a few times per week can reduce a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease. Soy foods also can be a great source of dietary fiber, though the U.S. Soybean Export Council advises consumers that not all soy products are the same. The USSEC notes that foods like soy milk and tofu contain very little fiber. People who want to utilize soy beans as a source of dietary fiber should look to foods that utilize the whole bean, such tempeh, soy flour and textured soy protein. The USSEC also notes there’s some confusion in regard to the connection between soy foods and iron, though the group admits research is ongoing. While a 1/2 cup serving of cooked soybeans contains four milligrams of iron, the phytate and soy protein present in soy foods reduce iron absorption, meaning that the body won’t really benefit from the iron. However, the USSEC recommends consumers purchase fermented soy foods, including tempeh and miso, because the body might absorb more iron from these foods than it will when consuming other types soy foods.

Chest CT Can’t Replace Screening Mammogram
Discover the Human Touch in Hearing Technology
Sue DeBruyne, Au.D. Doctor of Audiology
Accepting New Patients.
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am due to have a
Lakeville
mammogram in July, but around the same time I am supposed to have a chest CT as a follow-up to my chondrosarcoma cancer. I have a CT every other year, and an X-ray on the opposite years of both my affected arm and my lungs. Does a chest CT have the potential of showing a similar finding as a mammogram? I would just as soon not have to expose myself to so much radiation all in one month. I’m 66. There is a history of postmenopausal breast cancer in my family, in my mother’s mother. -- T.M.H. ANSWER: A mammogram is an X-ray that is designed specifically to look for abnormalities in breast tissue. Mammograms have been extensively studied and proven to reduce mortality in women between the ages of 50-74 (outside these ages, there remains extreme controversy). CT scans are X-rays taken from many angles and then reconstructed in a computer to provide a look at many slices of the part of the body being looked at. A CT scanner can be set to emphasize bones or soft tissue, and work is ongoing now with CT scans designed specifically for breast abnormalities. The CT scan you get as follow-up to your chondrosarcoma (a rare cancer of cartilage) is designed to look in lung tissue for abnormalities and has not been evaluated as a means of screening for breast cancer, although I do know that some may be found anecdotally. The CT scans you get as a part of your cancer followup are not an adequate substitute for ongoing mammography, which is particularly important in your case due to a family history. I do understand the concern about radiation, but a mammogram has very little radiation -- approximately the same you would get from naturally occurring radiation sources in seven weeks of walking around.

HEALTH CARE SCREENINGS FOR MEN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18 AND 39 Diabetes: Risk factors and warning signs will dictate if men between the ages of 18 and 39 require diabetes screening. For example, the U.S. National Library of Medicine notes that a BMI over 25 is considered overweight, which is a risk factor for diabetes. Men who fall into this category should be screened for diabetes starting at age 35 (the USNLM urges Asian American men to be screened if their BMI exceeds 23). Providers also may test men’s blood sugar levels if their blood pressure is 130/80 or higher and/or if they have a first degree relative with diabetes or a history of heart disease.

RELEASE, REFRESH, RESET (NAPSI)—You don’t have to let a busy schedule break your healthy stride or keep you from crushing your goals. You can regroup on your approach instead. By incorporating these three ways to release, refresh and reset, you can still make health a priority. 1. Release Your Mind by Escaping into Nature. Getting out into nature gives you the space and peace to release the things that bog you down. Escape the rush. Try camping in the wilderness or taking a scenic hike. Studies show that surrounding yourself with nature can have positive effects on mental health. Ditch the office and try working outdoors at a picnic table or on a blanket in the grass. Wherever you go, whatever you do, sit back and breathe in the fresh air. 2. Refresh Your Exercise Routine with New Moves. Inspiration derives from new experiences, which is why exercise physiologist and Bowflex fitness advisor Tom Holland recommends mixing up your daily workout routine. “Give yourself the opportunity to explore and challenge yourself in new ways,” suggests Holland. Try a new workout program, or an exercise machine that moves you in new ways, such as the breakthrough Bowflex LateralX (www.bowflex.com/lateralx) cardio machine. It strengthens and activates muscles with side-to-side, pushand-pull and stand-and-squat motions that target the arms, back, hips and core, as well as common trouble spots including glutes, hamstrings and quads. By moving in all directions, you mimic everyday activities such as yard work, housecleaning or chasing after your kids. It’s a new and exciting workout that can keep you motivated. 3. Reset Your Soul with Time for Yourself. In addition to carving out time for fitness, you need to make time for yourself. Creating positive energy in a chaotic world can be challenging but it’s important for overall health and well-being. You don’t have to be a yogi to meditate. Experts say to start small—try focusing for 10 minutes a day in a quiet place and don’t get frustrated if your mind wanders. It takes practice but the benefits are worth the investment. You may find you’re more calm and productive and you sleep better. Whatever helps you reset, create time in your schedule and act on it. You owe it to yourself. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions. Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise. Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death.

Place about half the orange segments in two rows on top of pastry sheet, leaving 1-inch margins on all sides. Fold edges of pastry sheet to create border. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Keep your crisper drawer clean by lining with fresh newspaper. It will absorb smells and liquid, and can be easily replaced. * If it’s garage sale time, try this trick: Wrap a picture frame tightly with tulle. Then you can hang earrings from the tulle. Maybe someone will think it’s so cute that you’ll sell the frame, too! * When your cut-up fruit is about to expire and you don’t think you’ll be able to eat it in time, just freeze it for smoothies. Lay it out in a single layer and pop it in the freezer. When it’s frozen, you can put it in a zipper-top baggie for easy storage. * “Do you have a lot of coffee mugs? Maybe it’s time to show them off! My granny has so many coffee mugs from trips and that she got as gifts. My daddy put up five long shelves on one wall of her kitchen. They are the perfect place to line up and display all the mugs, and each one has a story, which is fun to hear.” -- F.E. in North Carolina * “I have three girls and one bathroom, so there’s no way anyone gets ‘ready’ in front of the bathroom mirror. Instead, all the girls have a hanging shoe rack on the back of their door for makeup and hair supplies, and a mirror on the wall.” -- P.W. in Oregon * Stubborn stains in the toilet? Try dropping in a few denture tablets before going to bed, then scrub and flush in the morning

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Here’s How I Saved on Prescription Drugs
The price of prescription drugs has, like everything else, inched up. In some cases, the cost has made a massive, sudden jump, and it comes as a shock when you check out at the pharmacy. But there are ways around this horrible surprise. I recently discovered a way to save a lot of money ($80 on a 90-day prescription) by doing two things: I changed pharmacies, and I started using GoodRx. Here’s how: Go to the GoodRx website (goodrx.com) and put in your ZIP code so that all the local pharmacies show up. Enter the name of the drug you take, as well as the dose and number of pills. See what each pharmacy charges using GoodRx. They will vary widely. Boy, did I get a shock. It took me all of two minutes to call a new pharmacy and ask them to have the prescription transferred. Then I printed out the GoodRx coupon showing the pharmacy name, the drug and dose, the price and so on. I took that to the pharmacy and voila! Eighty dollars saved. Here are a few other ideas if GoodRx isn’t going to work for you: -- Ask your doctor if a generic would be just as good, or if another drug would work just as well. -- Find out if you qualify for the Extra Help program to pay for your drugs by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213, or read the information at www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10508.pdf. -- See if you qualify for the Pharmaceutical Assistance Program. (www. medicare.gov/plan-compare/#/pharmaceutical-assistance-program) -- Get a different Medicare drug plan more in line with the drugs you take (www.medicare.gov/plan-compare). One note: You can’t use GoodRx along with a deductible from Medicare or Medicaid, but you can use it instead of those. Beware whether you’ll reach your annual deductible if you don’t use a Medicare drug plan or if you’re in the doughnut hole (cover gap) already. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Fourth of July Fireworks Can Traumatize Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Please remind your readers that the noise and flash of fireworks can traumatize pets! Last year, my son and his partner took their dog “Bliss” to a Fourth of July festival. Someone set off a string of firecrackers a few feet from the booth they were visiting. Bliss bolted and pulled her leash out of my son’s hand. She ran straight out into the road. Luckily, the cars all stopped, and one of the drivers caught her. Afterward she remained very anxious. Bliss now takes medication to stay calm, and it’s difficult to take her to unfamiliar places. Please urge people not to set off fireworks; go to a professional display and leave the pets at home. -- Judith in Lake City, Florida
TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place! GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR JUDITH: You told them, and I thank you! I’m very sorry to hear that Bliss was traumatized, and I hope your son is able, through medication and training, to improve her confidence. Bliss’ parents didn’t do anything wrong in taking her to the festival, but their experience shows how others’ irresponsibility can have consequences for pets, and that owners have to be alert and ready to handle potential problems. The Fourth of July can be a trying day for pets. Crowded parties and loud fireworks can really stress them out. Large fireworks displays are no different than big thunderstorms to most pets, and should be treated as such. If fireworks will be within earshot of your home this holiday, prepare a safe area for your pet to shelter where the noise will not bother it as badly. If a ThunderShirt works for your dog (or cat), use it. Don’t bring pets to fireworks displays, and if you’re setting off backyard fireworks, put your pets inside. Send your comments, questions or tips to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME
HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR Look for EV-friendly lodging. Many hotels now feature charging stations exclusively for guests with EVs. Some hotels include the cost of utilizing such stations in their parking fees, while others may charge an additional amount. Either way, the convenience of finding a hotel with its own charging station outweighs any extra costs, as cars can be charged overnight while guests are asleep, leaving more time to travel in a vehicle that’s fully charged each morning.
(NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time. 1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. 2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant. 5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. PenskeTruckRental.com or call (800) GO-PENSKE.

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
