According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission,more than 15,000 people were treated for fireworks injuries in emergency rooms in 2020. In addition, injuries and deaths from fireworks increased by 50 percent between 2019 and 2020. Forty-fourpercentof thoseinjurieswereburns,30percentinvolvedthehandsandfingers and 22 percent affected the head, face and ears. USCPSC data also indicated that 15 percent of injuries affected the eyes.The majority of injuries (66 percent) occurred around the July 4th holiday, but it’s important that individuals exercise caution whenever they celebrate with fireworks.And those precautionary measures should remain in place when using sparklers,which the USCPSC indicates caused 900 injuries in 2020.

Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. Cat reacts to Thunderstorms Poorly

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Yesterday, we had a pretty big thunderstorm roll through. My 8-year-old cat, Sphinx, is normally never afraid of anything. But for the rst time, he hid underneath the sofa, and even a er the storm passed he stayed underneath the co ee table and wouldn’t come out. Why would he suddenly be afraid when he wasn’t before? --

DEAR CLAIRE: A sudden change in behavior may warrant a trip to the veterinarian. is can rule out any physical causes for the change in behavior, such as a silent infection or a chronic condition.

Cats may seem aloof and resilient to us, but they are actually creatures of habit -- much more so than dogs, who thrive on applied structure, like walks at the same time each day. Cats develop their own daily routine: when they eat and drink, when they “patrol” the house, where they sleep at di erent times of the day.

Any change in that routine can be very upsetting to them, but most still won’t let you know it. (Some will -- they might turn their back on you, meow incessantly, or even, when deeply aggrieved, leave a special present right where you can nd it.)

Observe Sphinx as much as you can, and think about any changes to the home. Did you recently rearrange furniture or install new ooring? Did a family member leave or did a new person move in?

To reduce his anxiety, spend more time playing with Sphinx. When a storm rolls in, place one of your favorite old shirts next to him wherever he is hiding. Speak to him calmly during the storm. If his anxiety doesn’t improve, or begins to get worse, talk to his veterinarian about temporarily giving him anti-anxiety medication.

LEROY’S HOPE CENTER OFFERS NON-DENOMINATIONAL COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Aer years of prayers and unwavering determination, Pastor Jack Hemp ing’s vision for a community outreach center in LeRoy came to life. Inspired by the guiding principles of hope and center, Hemp ing, who served as the Pastor of Living Waters Church, envisioned a place that would welcome everyone, beyond the boundaries of any particular church.

In 2017, the Hope Center of LeRoy opened its doors under the leadership of Rev. Henry Moore, serving as a “Christ-centered community Outreach Ministry providing spiritual and material support to our citizens.” e Hope Center aims to “live out the love of Christ by serving and supporting the community through programs and partnerships. As a 501(c)3 Christian nonpro t that relies upon the support of nancial partners and those who serve as volunteers, our programs o er hope in tangible ways to those who are struggling regardless of age, race, socio-economic status, or other distinctions.”

Aligned with their mission, the Hope center aims to collaborate with other community-minded organizations to deliver the best programs in LeRoy. eir commitment lies in being receptive to the needs of the community, prayerfully considering their ability to address those needs, and cherishing relationships with those who join them in service, as well as those they serve.

e Hope Center operates with a dedicated team comprising paid employees, volunteers, fundraising committee members, and board members. Diane Sia assumed the leadership role in July 2022, working alongside Lori Parmenter, the Hope Center’s Administrative Assistant.

Among the cornerstone programs initiated by the Hope Center is Fresh Start Tutoring, coordinated by Program director Amy ompson. is initiative o ers a comprehensive family literacy and math program for LeRoy and its surrounding areas. Struggling students from grades K to 6 receive free 30-minute weekly tutoring sessions with trained volunteers. e Hope Center also provides juice boxes, crackers, and chips for waiting students and co ee for their parents. e puzzle area has become very popular too.

Another valuable program o ered by the Hope Center is the Senior Moments Lunch Club, run by retired

nurse Tammy Genagon. Held on the second Wednesday of each month, club participants enjoy hours of games, projects, music, dancing, singing, and a delightful lunch. Trained volunteers are paired with guests to assist them throughout the day. All guests of this Lunch Club are individuals a ected by Alzheimer’s or other forms of memory impairment, so this monthly club gives caregivers a much-needed respite.

e Grief Share program, led by Mari-Lee Ruddy, o ers a twohour session for those coping with the loss of a loved one. Participants engage in workbook exercises, watch informative videos, and participate in group discussions, providing support and guidance during the grieving process.

Additionally, the Hope Center hosts the Hope Center Ladies’ Group, also known as Cra ers-Readers-Roamers. is monthly program invites all ladies to join and participate in various activities. Since its inception in January, the group has enjoyed events such as “Cra y Show and Tell,” a “Mug Rug” sewing class, Bible study, and a “Tea for Two” program.

e Hope Center warmly welcomes volunteers who have a heart for service. October to March, advises the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The flu is contagious and can sideline people for extended periods of time. The CDC says that each year one in five Americans gets the flu.

Taking steps to fend off the flu can help men and women and the people they routinely come in contact with.

Foods: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

A study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics showed that carnosine, a compound found in chicken soup, can help strengthen the body’s immune system and help fight off the flu in its early stages.

Flu shot and medications: Annual flu shots administered in advance of flu season can help protect people and their families from getting the flu. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says that, in select situations, antiviral medications - which are usually prescribed to treat the flu and lessen symptoms - can reduce the chance of illness in people exposed to influenza.

Many over-the-counter medicines can alleviate symptoms of the flu, but cannot fend it off.

Stop germ proliferation: Germs can be spread easily between persons through direct contact and indirect contact with surfaces sick individuals have touched. Doctors recommend staying home for at least 24 hours after a flu-induced fever has dissipated. Well individuals should avoid contact with sick people.

Frequent hand-washing with soap and water can stop germs from spreading. When soap and water is not available, alcohol-based hand sanitizers can help. People also should avoid touching their eyes, noses and mouths after being in public places or around someone who is ill.

Rest and restore: Those who feel symptoms coming on should begin drinking more liquids to keep the respiratory system hydrated and make mucus less viscous. Remember to get adequate sleep, as a tired body cannot effectively fight the flu virus.

People of all ages should take steps to protect themselves from the flu.

Livonia: At age 68, Shirley Ann passed away unexpectedly on July 23, 2022 in St. Petersburg, FL. She was born on January 27, 1954 in Rochester, NY to the late Floyd and Shirley Lindsay. Shirley Ann grew up in Livonia, NY where she attended Livonia Central School. A erward she worked in the service industry, including the Avon Inn and Maxims in Livonia. She moved to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1978 where she raised her three children and graduated with a degree in nursing from St. Petersburg College.

roughout her life, Shirley Ann was known and loved for her quick wit and smart mouth as she brought humor and insight to every context. She was a cherished friend who always gave a listening ear, sound advice and a sarcastic perspective.

Her love and intrigue of children supplied her with much laughter, love and cuddles. She was thrilled to become a grandmother and was a much-loved playmate to her granddaughters, o en having tea parties and playing salon.

Shirley Ann was also a dedicated nurse who truly enjoyed even the most challenging patients, in fact they were her favorite.

She was a devoted and loving sister, mother and grandmother who cherished her family deeply. Survived by her 3 adult children, Lindsay (Eric) Heneka, Austin Dobrowolski and Heath Dobrowolski; her sister, Barbara Briggs; and her 2 grandchildren, Valyn Heneka and Teagan Heneka, along with numerous Aunts, Uncles and Cousins who all miss her dearly. She will be remembered for her sarcastic sense of humor, warmth, and unwavering love for her family and friends.

Local Bank Changes

Whose decision was it to close a downtown major bank’s ATM? This has been an ideal location for all bank customers, downtown shoppers, travelers, and especially for walkers - not everyone drives a car. Really, how much time and how much employee expense is there to maintain this convenient service? This bank also made a big mistake by closing their drive thru. It would have been an asset to provide a drive-thru service during the Covid outbreak. I will sincerely consider another bank’s services located downtown.

A Roller’s Rant To All The Walkers Out There

I had an accident a couple years back and I’m now paralyzed from the waist down. I have a modified truck and it requires me to park in a van accessible parking spot or a handicap spot with cross-hatched stripes. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to wait for someone to come out and move their vehicle. Why should I wait when it’s illegal to park there? You can walk, I can’t. Use your legs! Also [local business] repaved their parking lot, and the only van accessible parking spot is for the employee of the month! What’s up with that? So I made my own parking spot right in front where all the cross-hatched lines are. I’ve spoken with the head of security as well as the Vice President and they assured me they’d take care of it. That was over 4 months ago!

DON’T LET SUNBURN DERAIL SUMMER FUN

Many people find it impossible to think about summer without conjuring visions of spending endless hours outdoors from morning until evening, whether beachside, on the open water or even floating in a backyard pool. Although a certain measure of sun exposure is required for some natural functions of the body, it’s well documented that too much time in the sun can be hazardous to one’s health. That’s why summer frolickers need to exercise considerable caution each time they step outside.

Taking sunburn for granted can be a big mistake. Many people wouldn’t risk burns from a hot stove or open fire, but they won’t think twice about being unprotected under the very hot rays of the sun. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than one-third of adults and nearly 70 percent of children admit to suffering from sunburn within the past year. Depending on the intensity of the sun and the amount of time spent outside, sunburn can be a first- or second-degree burn. In first-degree burns, damage affects the topmost layer of skin. However, sunburn can even affect deeper layers and cause blistering in addition to redness and pain.

Sunburn also can cause some irreparable damage that goes unseen. According to WebMD, ultraviolet light from the sun can alter DNA, prematurely aging skin or even contributing to skin cancers. It can take years before symptoms become noticeable. Therefore, it is best for people of all ages to exercise caution when spending time in the sun.

Sunburn is one of the most easily prevented summertime ailments. It’s also important to note that sunburns are not just limited to the hot weather or when it is sunny outside. Ultraviolet damage can occur at any time of the year, and also from artificial UV sources, such as tanning beds. Preventing sunburn is simple.

High Blood Pressure

Readings Call for Additional Medication

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 68-year-old female who was diagnosed with high blood pressure at 32. I am 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weigh 130 pounds. I’ve been taking 240 mg of verapamil for all of these years. A few years back, my medication started coming in 120-mg dosages, so I started taking one in the morning and one at night. My blood pressure both at home and at the doctor’s office is often higher than I think it should be, averaging 138/88. Recently, I used a 24-hour blood pressure monitor, which showed that more than 50% of my daytime readings were above 140/90, while my nighttime readings averaged 118/82. I am still waiting to hear back from my doctor regarding the results of this test, but I wanted to get your thoughts. Should I be on some other type of medication? Should I alter the timing to get better daytime readings? -- E.T.

ANSWER: In my opinion, these readings are not ideal. Twenty-four-hour, ambulatory blood pressure readings are usually 5 to 10 points lower than office blood pressure readings, so your average daytime readings are correspondingly higher. There is strong evidence that in people at high risk for heart attack (such as those who are already known to have blockages), controlling blood pressure to an average of less than 120 systolic (the first or top number) and less than 70 diastolic (the second or bottom number) reduces risk. It’s not as clear for people who are at a lower risk, such as people who have high blood pressure without any additional risks. In my own practice, however, I will usually try to get my patients close to those optimal numbers, as long as the medication does not cause side effects. In a situation like yours, I would consider additional daytime medicine. More verapamil might be reasonable, but many doctors might use a different medication, such as a diuretic, in the morning to try to get the optimal blood pressure with less risk of side effects. Very often, the choice of blood pressure medication depends on any other medical issues a person may have. Only your doctor knows enough about your medical condition to make a personalized recommendation.

Does anyone remember a “normal” weather year? Not in recent history, it seems, but this year is a doozy! Looking back at the temperature swings we’ve had this year, January through April each had close to or more than half the month with highs at least 10 degrees above the average range. should not need to worry. They have reserves of food to help them through stressful times. If we go back to very dry conditions, which we most likely will over the next couple of months, you may want to supplement watering plants with higher water needs, such as hydrangeas. With newly planted material, of course, you will want to be sure to add water as needed. We like to see the plants get about

an inch of water per week – a small investment in a rain gauge is money well spent to help you know how much water your plants have gotten. And remember, when we do get a gully-washer, most of that rain runs off before it can percolate into the soil. Sometimes the best measure of moisture is to stick your finger in the soil and judge by feel.

A simple project that will help keep your home comfortable is topping up your attic insulation. This easy project will reduce your household energy consumption and will save you money on monthly energy bills.

A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit or furnace to work harder than necessary. Most attics are insulated, but many, especially those in older homes, are not insulated adequately enough. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps.

Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay Roxul ComfortBatt on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first or existing layer of insulation. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists: cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney. Insulation begins working the moment it is installed and lasts throughout the life of the building, which means one easy DIY project can provide years of savings.

Thanks to Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can receive free services and supports through service providers like Employment Networks (EN) and State VocationalRehabilitation(VR)agencies. For 20 years, the Ticket program has provided the support people need on their paths to employment and empowerment.

Angel is one of those people.

The Ticket program helped Angel after injuries to his neck and back derailed his career in the U.S. Air Force. Once he had taken the time to heal,Angel knew he wanted to work but wasn’t sure how his disabilities would affect his options.

“I was a young man with a family to support,” Angel says. “… and I was not ready to give up on the workforce.”

When Angel learned about a job opportunity with a federal contractor, he thought that his disability would prevent him from being a viable job candidate. But then, Angel learned about programs, resources and guidelines that could help him. First, he learned about Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Under Section 503, companies that do business with the federal government take affirmative action to recruit, hire, retain and promote individuals with disabilities. Angel also connected with a Ticket program EN that offered the services and support he needed for a fresh start. His EN helped him find the confidence he needed to pursue the job. Working with a Benefits Counselor at the EN, Angel learned about Social Security Work Incentives that applied tohimand,onceAngelstartedworking, his EN helped him request reasonable accommodations to help him in his new job working on a federal contract for the U.S. Department of Defense. Angel is happy to be working again with military peers, earning income to support his family.
