Your Mobile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) Mobile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disconcerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012.
When a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to more than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity.
The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year. While identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like going through trash and stealing wallets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.

What are tried and true methods for keeping weeds away?
Keeping weeds at bay is an ongoing battle for gardeners, but there are several tried and true methods to help you maintain a weed-free garden. Here are some effective strategies to consider:
1. Mulching: Mulching is one of the most effective ways to suppress weeds. Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips, straw, or bark, around your plants. Mulch helps smother weed seeds, prevents their germination, and blocks sunlight from reaching existing weeds. It also helps retain moisture in the soil and improves its fertility. Regularly replenish the mulch layer to maintain its effectiveness.
2. Hand Pulling: For small areas or isolated weeds, hand pulling is a practical and eco-friendly method. Ensure you remove the entire weed, including the roots, to prevent regrowth. It’s best to pull weeds when the soil is moist, making it easier to extract them. Regularly inspect your garden and promptly remove any emerging weeds before they have a chance to spread.
3. Weed Barriers: Weed barriers, such as landscape fabric or cardboard, can be used in conjunction with mulch to create an additional barrier against weeds. These materials block weed growth by preventing sunlight from reaching the soil. Place the barrier over the soil before applying mulch, ensuring it covers the entire planting area. Cut holes in the barrier to accommodate existing plants.
4. Weed Control Fabric: For larger areas, weed control fabric can be an effective solution. This permeable fabric allows water and nutrients to reach the plants while blocking weed growth. Install the fabric on the soil surface before planting, securing it with landscape pins. Cut holes in the fabric to accommodate the desired planting areas. It’s important to regularly inspect and remove any weeds that may emerge around the holes.
5. Regular Maintenance: Regular maintenance is key to weed prevention. Keep your garden beds tidy by removing debris and fallen leaves, as they can provide a breeding ground for weed seeds. Regularly hoe or cultivate the soil to disrupt weed growth and prevent them from establishing deep roots. Additionally, practicing good garden hygiene by removing weeds before they go to seed will help prevent future weed problems. Remember, a combination of these methods is often the most effective approach. It’s also important to be vigilant and address weeds as soon as they appear to prevent them from spreading and competing with your desired plants. With consistent effort and the right strategies, you can keep weeds under control and enjoy a healthier, more attractive garden.

TOWN OF LIVONIA
AMBULANCE DISTRICT #1
4213 South Livonia Road
585-346-6170
Dear Residents of the towns of Livonia and Conesus,
As the Board of Commissioners for the Town of Livonia Ambulance District #1 (TLAD), we would like to provide you with an update on our services and plans for the future. With so much media coverage being given to the struggle and hardships faced by Ambulance Departments, we want to assure you that we are taking the necessary steps to ensure that our residents continue to receive the highest quality of care provided by a fast, local response.
You may not be aware, but TLAD was established in 2007 and is a separate entity from the Livonia Fire Department, Livonia Joint Fire District, and Livonia Ambulance Squad. e easiest way to explain is that TLAD provides the equipment, the Squad provides the volunteers, and Fire is totally separate. Although we are housed in the same building, TLAD actually pays an annual rent for the use of space as well as electricity and Internet. e district (whose residents elect commissioners) encompasses the town of Livonia, but the ambulance serves all of Livonia and Conesus, and provides mutual aid to surrounding areas when needed.
Our Board consists of 5 elected volunteers. Elections are held the 2nd Tuesday of December and are open to Livonia residents who are registered voters.
Meetings are held the first and third Wednesday of the month (except for July: meet 2nd Wednesday) at the Livonia Emergency Services facility (4213 South Livonia Road) at 7pm. Meetings are open to the public.
With costs rising for the past several years, we have had to greatly reduce the amount of money allocated towards savings and large equipment purchases. e monies we receive from insurance payments now only covers our day-to-day operating costs.
e towns currently contribute funds annually to cover co-pays and deductibles of town residents ($60,000 Livonia, $17,000 Conesus). No town resident should have to pay money out of pocket for transport or treatment provided by Livonia EMS.
We take great pride in being fiscally responsible. We provide an annual budget to the town boards, including recommendations for equipment purchases and maintenance. We provide training for our volunteers. We received a grant through FireHouse Subs to replace our AEDs.
We "remount" ambulances to save money. Remounting the "box" on a new cab/frame saves $100k. In 2023, the remount cost $150k. We have exhausted this option (boxes are too old) and the next ambulances will cost over $305k each.
e Town of Livonia provided TLAD with COVID relief
funds to purchase new gurneys ($25k each), stair chairs ($7k each) and an oxygen compressor system to fill our own 02 bottles ($50k). e oxygen system alone saves us several thousand dollars each month. Had the town not allocated us these funds, these purchases would have been challenging to make.
e amount from insurance billing has remained steady for the past 6 years at $500,000 annually. Our call volume has also remained at around 1,200 calls. Equipment and medical supply costs have greatly increased.
2023 statistics:
- 1,142 calls for service (180 were mutual aid to other towns)
- 95% or greater coverage for 1st ambulance
- 50% coverage for 2nd ambulance (calls when 1st ambulance is out on another call)
- A crew delivered a baby in town
- A crew had a CPR save
- 30 volunteers logged 19,218 hours of service
- e top 8 volunteers logged over 1,000 hours each
- e top 3 volunteers logged over 2,000 hours each, the equivalent of working a full -time job
Last year the board developed a long-term savings and staffing plan that will require increased financial contributions from the towns. We are working with Livonia and Conesus towns to increase savings for equipment replacement, and a plan to transition to paid staffing starting with Paramedics in 2025, and doing so in a way that will minimize impact on taxpayers.
A paramedic certification requires almost 2 years of full-time college and over 400 hours of clinical experience. Livonia is the last volunteer paramedic agency in New York State. Just to our east, Richmond is hiring per diem paramedics at $34/hour. Adding paid paramedics will help us remain competitive and will increase our Advanced Life Support (ALS) coverage for our community. ALS techs are able to administer advanced medications, including for pain management, cardiac monitoring, and are able to perform more advanced treatments in the field that otherwise would be done in an ER.
Our board is incredibly thankful for the amazing group of dedicated volunteers that provide first rate care to our residents. New members are always welcome!
Any questions, please feel free to contact us at 346-6170 or come to a meeting!

Cherry pit spitting is the act of spitting out remains of cherries from one’s mouth to send them as far away as possible. Thousands of people, comprising contestants and spectators around the U.S., gather at specified venues to participate and witness this exciting holiday. The origin of the day is associated with Herb Teichman. He is the owner of Tree-mendus Fruit Farm. They first held a fun competition of cherry pit spitting in 1974 at his farm.
BUT... have you ever wondered how you can just enjoy cherries without trying to tear out the pits first? Well, guess what, there is a cherry pitter! It looks like a giant hole punch, except it’s for punching out cherry pits and it does four cherries at a time. It’s simply amazing! You won’t ever have to spit out or tear out cherry pits again!

6 FACTS ABOUT WATERMELONS
Watermelons provide cooling, juicy refreshment during the warm days of summer. But while they’re most associated with summer, watermelons can typically be found in grocery stores yearround. Watermelons are members of the cucurbitaceae family, which includes other gourds, such as pumpkin, squash and cucumber. Watermelons can be considered a fruit or a vegetable. In some areas of the world, watermelons are considered a fruit used primarily in snacks and desserts. In Russia, watermelon rind is pickled, while some Asian countries stir-fry or stew watermelons. To quench one’s curiosity about watermelons, the following are six facts about this beloved food, courtesy of The Watermelon Board.
1. Washing watermelons before cutting into them will help prevent the transfer of any dirt or bacteria into the fleshy center.
2. An average 15- to 20-pound watermelon offers 90 6-ounce servings.
3. Watermelons grow in warm climates and are harvested from Florida to Guatemala. Residents of the United States who want to enjoy domestically grown watermelons should look for them in June, July and August.
4. Seedless watermelons contain small, white “seeds.” These are actually seed coats that didn’t fully form. Crossing watermelons that are a diploid plant (having two sets of chromosomes) with a tetraploid plant (having four sets of chromosomes) will form a fruit with a triploid seed three sets of chromosomes). It’s the triploid that produces seedless watermelons.
5. Whole watermelons do not necessarily need to be refrigerated. But once cut, any remaining pieces should be refrigerated.
6. Watermelons are 92 percent water, and they’re the perfect carrying case for beverages. Early explorers even used watermelons as canteens.
(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Password protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone owners password-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, you could make it very easy for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity.
Review your social network privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social network sites. As the use of social networking continues to increase, it’s expected that the use of malware will rise, too. Cybercriminals are always looking for ways to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of what apps you install, and never “friend” someone you don’t know.
Consider getting extra protection. There are a growing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as well as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, Mobile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity Monitoring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.

DID YOU KNOW?
According to the World Health Organization, tobacco kills up to half its users, annually killing roughly six million people each year. The WHO notes that more thanfivemillionofthosedeathsare the result of direct tobacco use, while more than 600,000 deaths can be attributed to non-smokers being exposed to secondhand smoke. While many in the United States may understand the threat that smoking poses to their overall health, the WHO notes that studies indicate knowledge about the specifichealthrisksoftobaccouse is not widespread. A 2009 survey of smokers in China found that less than 40 percent of smokers knew that smoking tobacco causes coronary heart disease, while only 27 percent were aware of the link between smoking and stroke. It’s also important that smokers recognize that cigarettes once characterized as “light” or “low tar” are not healthier than more traditional cigarettes. While the US Food and Drug Administration has banned the use of such terms in cigarette sales within the United States, smokers traveling or living overseas should be mindful that other countries may not operate under such restrictions. In addition, the American Cancer Society notes that there is no proof that cigarettes sold as “all natural” and marketed as having no chemicals or additives are any safer than traditional cigarettes and that the best way for men, women and children to avoid the dangers of tobacco is to never smoke or to quit immediately.

Doctors Differ on Dietary Advice for Lynch Syndrome
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a healthy 55-year-old woman who eats well and exercises (with both weights and cardio) six to seven times per week. Four years ago, I was diagnosed with Lynch syndrome. (I have the “MLH1” genotype.) My primary care physician suggested testing after my sister died of cancer at the age of 48. (Doctors were never able to determine if she had breast or lung cancer because of the location of the cancer.) All of my siblings (four of us) have been tested, and each of us has it. Two of my nieces have also tested positive for it.
KIDS AND SLEEP
School-aged children are busier than ever before, and some may be sacrificing sleep to accommodate their lifestyles. The National Sleep Foundation says school-aged children need between nine and 11 hours of sleep each night to function at a healthy level. Sleep deprivation can be linked to a host of health ailments, including issues affecting the development of the brain. Growing evidence suggests that lack of sleep can cause disturbances in metabolic rates that could affect the risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity. A recent study from Johns Hopkins University found that, for each additional hour of sleep a child gets, the risk of that child becoming overweight or obese decreases by 9 percent. Children who slept the least, according to the research, had a 92 percent higher risk of being overweight or obese compared to children with longer sleep duration. The NSF adds that poor or inadequate sleep can lead to mood swings, behavioral problems and cognitive problems that impact kids’ ability to learn in school. To promote good sleep habits in children, parents and other caregivers can establish consistent sleep/ wake routines; ensure children avoid excess caffeine, particularly late in the day; create a cool, dark sleep environment; keep televisions and other media devices out of bedrooms; and help children work through stressors that may impact sleep.
I have three adult children of my own, and my doctor told me that at least one of them will have it. Of my three children, only one has been tested, and she tested positive for it. Since my diagnosis, I have been receiving regular preventive care such as colonoscopies, endoscopies and mammograms. Other than some polyps that were removed, checked, and free of cancer, all procedures have come back “clear.”
One doctor told me to eat little to no red meat, follow a Mediterranean-style diet, and exercise. Another told me: “Live your life and eat whatever you want. Lynch Syndrome is hereditary. No matter what you do, you’ll either get cancer, or you won’t!”
I feel like I’m getting mixed messages from my doctors. Could you please tell me more information about Lynch syndrome? Does this mean that I will definitely end up getting cancer? Is there preventive care that I should focus on? -- G.R.
ANSWER: Lynch syndrome is caused by a mutation in a group of DNA repair genes. Without these repair genes, a person’s DNA is more liable to have errors in it when duplicated, which leads to an increased risk of cancers. People with Lynch syndrome are particularly at risk for colon cancer, but also cancers of the stomach, kidney, bladder and other organs. Women are at a higher risk for endometrial and ovarian cancer, but it remains debated whether breast cancer is a Lynch-associated cancer. Men with Lynch syndrome are at a higher risk for prostate cancer.
Among family members, it is expected that half will inherit the Lynch mutation. Your family has been unlucky. I recommend that your other children get tested soon.
Of the four major genotypes in Lynch syndrome, MLH1 tends to have the highest risk of cancer, and approximately 70% to 80% of women with this genotype will get a Lynch-associated cancer, usually colon or endometrial. The goal is to find and remove these cancers before they can spread.
I strongly disagree with the doctor who suggested that diet isn’t important. When you are at a higher risk for cancer, it’s more important to have the healthiest lifestyle you can. A Mediterraneanstyle diet, which is high in fruits and vegetables and low in processed foods and meat, is likely to reduce your cancer risk, but it is critically important to continue screening.
A colonoscopy is recommended every one to two years. Many experts perform endometrial biopsies every year, despite ironclad evidence of benefit. Ovarian cancer screening is controversial and of uncertain benefit; some high-risk women have chosen a riskreducing surgery to remove their ovaries and fallopian tubes. Any symptoms of endometrial or ovarian cancer should be discussed with your physician, who can decide whether to do additional testing.

Get Summer-Ready with Expert Style Tips (Family Features) Warm weather means fun-filled days spent in the sun by a pool or at the beach. Style and beauty-on-abudget expert Lilliana Vazquez of www.CheapChicas.com shares the following tips to help you get summer-ready. Look for pops of color: This season, don’t be afraid of color. Neon is back in a big way, but it can be a tricky look to pull off. To make it more wearable, Vazquez suggests working this trend into smaller accessories like a lime green belt or fuchsia clutch to instantly punch up a neutral outfit.

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING
Estate planning should begin early in a person’s life, especially for young parents. It’s easy to talk about saving for a home or retirement, but it’s not so simple to discuss who will care for your children should you die while they are still minors.
Those who are not able to sort through these answers on their own should enlist the help of an attorney or a financial adviser, both of whom can take some of the emotion out of the discussion and put it in more practical terms.

HOW CONSUMERS CAN SPREAD THE WORD ABOUT LOCAL BUSINESSES
Take to social media. Though it certainly has its detractors, social media remains wildly popular. An April 2023 report from Global WebIndex indicated 60 percent of the world’s population uses social media, and the daily average usage is two hours and 24 minutes. Data from Meta indicates that 83 percent of Instagram users discover new brands while using the platform. Such reports illustrate how effective positive reviews and references to small local businesses can be. Consumers won’t need much time to share a story about a great local business on their social media accounts, but that small investment of time can pay big dividends for those companies.

THE CHALLENGES CLIMATE CHANGE POSES TO AGRICULTURE
Drought: The National Integrated Drought Information System reports that the primary direct economic impact of drought in the agricultural sector is crop failure and pasture losses. The Government of Canada notes that areas of western Canada are already experiencing frequent and severe droughts, and scientists expect other areas of the country to be affected by drought more often in the years to come. The same goes for the United States, which the UCS notes has already dealt with severe drought in California, the Great Plains and the midwest. Depleted water supplies are a byproduct of drought, and such depletion can take a toll on crops and livestock.

EXPLORING SOLAR ELECTRICITY
Solar panels are seen more and more on roofs of residential homes and even some businesses. Due in part to more aggressive marketing by solar energy companies, as well as greater awareness by customers, solar energy has become increasingly popular in recent years.
The Solar Energy Industries Association® reports that solar energy in the United States is booming. The association offers that, since the passage of The Solar Investment Tax Credit in 2006, solar has experienced a compound annual growth rate of more than 60 percent.
HOW TO CUT COSTS ON HOME RENOVATIONS
Choose midgrade materials: Certain materials may be all the rage but they come with a higher price tag. Angi reports that granite counters could be $60 to $100 per square foot. However, a composite or laminate that looks like granite and wears well may be $10 to 40 per square foot. Figure out where you can choose middle-of-the-road materials for maximum value.
HOME HEATING & AIR CONDITIONING
While many might assume that environmental preservation is the driving force behind the growing popularity of solar energy, it’s actually the financial benefits of solar energy that are leading the way. One Block Off the Grid polled nearly 200 solar homeowners to learn more about their motivations for going solar. Roughly 75 percent would not have gone solar if there was no economic benefit to doing so. A number of people who have switched to solar say they are getting a high rate of return on the investment. The average electricity bill a person saw prior to solar energy hovered around $177 a month. After the conversion, bills were now as low as $55.

WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER
Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls. Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduce slipping on wet surfaces in the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs.
Use shoe trays to reduce puddling from melting snow or rain runoff in entryways. Mop up spills quickly, and consider the use of matteor textured-finished flooring to improve stability underfoot.
Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates.

REASONS TO PLANT A TREE
There are plenty of reasons to plant trees. Trees provide a natural form of shade, reducing air temperature by blocking the sun’s rays. This can reduce reliance on air conditioning systems and make it more comfortable to spend time outdoors during the summer.
North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences says trees absorb and block noise and reduce glare. They also can trap dust, pollen and smoke. Trees also absorb carbon dioxide and potentially harmful gasses from the air. One large tree can supply a day’s worth of oxygen for as many as four people, while also storing 13 pounds of carbon per year.
Gardens need tending even when temperatures outside are especially hot, so gardeners must take steps to protect their health when working in their gardens during the summer.
PEST
Install ceiling fans. Ceiling fans can improve cooling efficiency in a home. According to the DOE, ceiling fans allow men and women who use air conditioners to raise the thermostats on their AC units about 4 F without adversely affecting comfort levels. Men and women who live in temperate climates may find that ceiling fans are enough to keep rooms cool without the need for air conditioners.
HOW TO CONSERVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT SUMMER
Stop cooling an empty home. A cool home might be the ultimate necessity during summer heat waves, but there’s no reason to cool a residence when no one is home. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, operating thermostats more efficiently can help homeowners trim their cooling costs by as much as 10 percent. One way to be more efficient with thermostats is to keep the house warmer than normal when no one is home. Programmable thermostats can be set so air conditioning units turn on shortly before residents arrive home, ensuring the house is comfortable and no energy is wasted.

Excessive energy bills can be a concern in spring and summer, just as much as they are in the winter. So how can you save money while keeping your home cool? The solution is simple: Top up your attic insulation.
A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss, forcing your AC unit to work harder than necessary over the warmer months. Most attics are insulated, but oftentimes the amount of insulation present is inadequate - especially in older homes. Over time, insulation can settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps.
Topping it up is easy. Ideally, you want to aim for a depth of 16 inches of insulation for an overall R-value of 50. When existing insulation is present, simply level existing insulation to the top of the joist. Lay a fire- and moisture-resistant batt insulation on top of joists, running perpendicular to the first layer. Ensure batts are butted against each other tightly. Fit batts closely to cross joists; cut batt if necessary (this can be done easily with a serrated blade or bread knife) and leave no space between layers. Don’t forget to insulate the attic hatch to the same level as the rest of the attic. Apply weather-stripping to the edge of the hatch to reduce air leakage. Keep in mind that only IC-rated electrical fixtures can have insulation placed with zero clearance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local building code to insulate around the chimney.
When a house is insulated properly, energy savings can add up over time. Remember, insulation starts working the moment it is installed and can last for the life of the building.
HOW ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES ARE HELPING THE DEAF
Telecommunications According to the NDC, telecommunications technology has evolved considerably in recent decades. That evolution has made it easier than ever for deaf individuals to communicate.
The NDC notes that telecommunications technology for deaf individuals is an umbrella term that includes telephone devices, platforms and services that are employed when standard phones are ineffective. The NDC identifies three primary telecommunications services:
1. Video relay service (VRS)
2. Telecommunications relay service (TRS)
3. Video remote interpreting (VRI)
Regulated by the Federal Communications Commission,VRS andTRS are free programs, whereas VRI is a fee-based service. TRS is a text-driven service that, unlike VRI and VRS, does not employ video.
DID YOU KNOW?
Though office work might not be the first profession individuals think of in relation to elevating one’s cancer risk, sitting at a desk for most of the day can increase a person’s risk for cancer. According to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, sitting for most of the day without engaging in physical activity puts individuals at increased risk for cancer. How much extra risk does that entail? Though no two individuals are the same, studies have equated sitting for eight hours a day without any physical activity to the risk posed by obesity and smoking. The DFCI notes that sitting over long periods of time has been known to cause increased blood pressure, high cholesterol and excess body fat around the waist, each of which have been identified as factors that increase a person’s risk for cancer.

Refresh Your Home for Spring
Eliminate the extras
While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

INFLUENTIAL
Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917):
Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas.
DID YOU KNOW? If the 1927 song “I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream” by Howard Johnson, Billy Moll and Robert A. King is correct, then the world has been a noisy place for quite some time. Though the exact origins of ice cream are unknown, historians agree this popular treat has been around for a very, very long time. The International Dairy Foods Association says the origins of ice cream may reach as far back as the second century B.C. Though he wasn’t around back then, the fifth Roman Emperor Nero, who ruled from 54 to 68 A.D., might have been so fond of iced treats that he routinely sent runners into the Apennine Mountains to retrieve snow that he would then flavor with fruits and juices. That tale might be apocryphal, but there’s no denying ice treats have been enjoyed for a long time. And based on a 2018 report from Grand View Research, Inc. that projected the global ice cream market would reach roughly $79 billion by 2025, it’s fair to say ice cream will remain popular for a long time to come as well.

DID YOU KNOW? Without pollinators, more than 100 crops grown in the United States would not be able to thrive. Plants, including various fruits, vegetables, nuts and more, rely on pollinators to ensure to transport pollen. Though many plants are self-pollinating and others are pollinated by the wind or water, many others rely on insects and animals to become pollinated. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says birds, bees, bats, butterflies, moths, flies, beetles, and small mammals all can work as pollinators. Examples of crops pollinated by pollinators include apples, squash and almonds. Animals and insects help pollinate more than 75 percent of the world’s flowering plants, and nearly 75 percent of all crops, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Unfortunately, pesticide use can diminish the number of natural pollinators. Natural gardening and pest-control can help protect the habitats of pollinators. • Trusts

How to protect your pets from extreme heat
Don’t leave pets in a parked car. The temperature inside a vehicle can quickly approach dangerous levels on hot days, so pet owners should never leave their pets in parked cars, even if they leave the air conditioning on and the engine running. The HSUS notes that on an 85-degree day, temperatures inside cars with slightly cracked windows can reach 102 degrees in as little as 10 minutes. Rather than taking pets with you on car trips, leave them at home inside a comfortably air conditioned room where they won’t be vulnerable to rising temperatures.
HOW TO KEEP DOGS SAFE AND CONTENT
Begin with training. One of the best things a pet owner can do for the wellbeing of a his or her dog is to ensure that it receives proper training from a young age. According to VetWest Animal Hospital experts, statistics show that owners who have pets that behave get more satisfaction and have stronger bonds with their pets. A dog that responds to basic commands can stay out of danger, and knowing what he is supposed to do can help the dog feel less stressed.

How to remove a tick from your pet
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: While checking my little Terrier, “Fritz,” a er a walk, I found one small tick just hanging on his fur. I don’t know what I would have done if it had attached itself to his skin. What’s the procedure? Should I rush him to the vet if a tick attaches itself? -- Carla in Albany, New York
DEAR CARLA: Excellent work in checking Fritz’s coat right away a er your walk! Ticks are so common now that it’s important to check a er every outdoor foray, even if your dog never leaves the sidewalk. A tick check is a fast way to make sure -- just by running your hand along your pet’s coat, down and then up.
You do not need to rush your dog to the vet for an embedded tick. You can remove it yourself. Here’s how:
-- Grab a pair of tweezers and a magnifying glass. If you have surgical gloves and a tick remover tool, even better.
-- Have another person hold your dog still while you locate the embedded tick.
-- Carefully grasp the tick with the tweezers as close to the dog’s skin as possible, near its head.
-- Slowly, steadily pull the tick out. Don’t jerk. Place the tick into a plastic bag with a little isopropyl alcohol.
-- Clean the dog’s skin with a dab of isopropyl alcohol and apply antibiotic ointment.
A er removing the tick, monitor your dog for a few days and keep an eye on the bite area to make sure an infection doesn’t develop. If you notice changes in his behavior, signs of illness or the bite area gets infected, then it’s time to see the vet, and bring the tick along in a plastic bag.

This Senior Apartment Complex Smells! What used to be nice senior apartments is now filthy, dirty, and a very low caliber of people. Drugs. Drinking. Constant overnight guests. Dirty animals. Bad behavior. Smoking inside. It sounds harsh but it’s a fact. How can new managers bring down a building so fast? In a matter of a few years! It literally smells in there. It’s going to take years to clean up, if you care to. In the meantime it falls on you and your reputation of not doing a very good job. It might pay to bring in older, experienced and wiser people to manage it.
The [local town] Airport
Thank you!
On behalf of all the Henrietta Seniors that attended the trip to the Seneca Park Zoo, I would like to thank the Staff at the Zoo who were so helpful answering all our questions and to Nicole and Diane of the Henrietta Senior Center for being awesome and helping us through the entire trip, it is nice to attend a place were Seniors are treated with respect.
Can’t believe a multi-million dollar renovation is necessary for our [local town] Airport after the many million dollar renovation recently completed. Our small city airport functions just fine without the “enhancements” that are proposed. “Natural lighting” shouldn’t cost millions. This sounds like a huge rip-off for our tax dollars. Fix the roads instead!

GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS
Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.

EFFICIENCY AT WORK
Schedules can help professionals in much the same way that grocery lists help consumers at the grocery store. When visiting a grocery store without a shopping list, shoppers are bound to forget items, necessitating follow-up visits to the store, and waste time wondering what they need. Without schedules in an office environment, workers may allow time to idle away because there are no deadlines motivating them to complete projects.

Pete Bruckel Recognized for 30 Years of Support of the National Warplane Museum
BY RUTH HENRY, NWM VOLUNTEER
National Warplane Museum (NWM) volunteer John Snyder and NWM President Austin Wadsworth visited Peter Bruckel at his company in Avon recently to present a plaque honoring Bruckel’s 30 years of Museum support.
An aviation enthusiast, Bruckel earned his pilot’s license at age 30. His two sons, Justin and Josh, love aircra as well, having been around planes since they were toddlers. “I love the speed!” says Justin, who received his pilot’s license in 2023.
Pete’s support for NWM started in 1994 when he donated a building to the Museum. His crew disassembled, loaded, transported, unloaded, and reassembled the small original hanger which provided a tremendous boost to the newly formed organization. Over the years, his company, P S Bruckel Inc. in Avon, has assisted Air Shows and large group gatherings by bringing in lights, signs, traffic control management and generators.
During the early Airshows, the Bruckel family were easy to spot as they perched thirty feet above the crowds atop an orange scissor man-li , a large piece of industrial heavy equipment used for highway bridge painting. e li remained on site throughout the show for family and friends to enjoy the unobstructed views of planes taking off and landing.
Asked what has prompted his support over three decades, Pete cited his love of aviation, love of airplanes, and love for military veterans who “fought for this country and deserve more credit than they get.”
Pete’s father, William J Bruckel, served as a Navy Commander during WWII. He was stationed on a submarine in the waters of Tokyo Bay when Hiroshima was bombed. His sub rescued a B-29 crew from the waters off Tokyo, and movie footage of that rescue remains in the Bruckel family archives. William Bruckel completed his military service and then, through the GI Bill, attended University of Rochester and Harvard Law School (1946-48). He established a law practice in the Town of Avon and served as Village Attorney.
e Bruckel family’s benevolence has extended beyond NWM, including Toys for Tots and Canandaigua Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Pete’s latest initiative, LIVWELL, is a multi-use facility planned in Avon on land donated by his family. Growing up in Avon, Pete’s
participation in sports helped him connect to the community and learn valuable life lessons he believes can benefit people of all ages today. His father, William, was an All-American football player in college and his three children all played college sports. Pete sees LIVWELL filling community needs through the development of a multi-generational community wellness center offering indoor and outdoor sports and recreation, community space, and senior programming.
According to Justin, a LIVWELL Board member, “ is facility will be accessible to the community geographically. Programs that families had to drive to Rochester to find will be available right here in Livingston County.” In addition to sports, LIVWELL plans community rooms for social gatherings and events for seniors and young families, as well as health services such as physical therapy and wellness classes.
Asked what motivates this level of philanthropy, Justin cites his dad’s success over his 45 years as a business entrepreneur and this new season of life Pete is entering. “He has supported many people and programs over the years but is now able to focus on larger community projects. He has a special place in his heart for Livingston County and Geneseo and now can give back in a more substantial way.”
As with the National Warplane Museum, Pete recognizes the importance of re-investing in the community, for himself, his neighbors, his kids, grandkids, and future generations.
