Choking is a leading cause of unintentional death in infants. Young children not can choke on food as well as objects they put in their mouths while exploring the world around them. Parents of young children and hosts who intend to invite youngsters into their homes can learn how to respond when kids appear to be choking. The Mayo Clinic recommends the following approach when tending to children under the age of 1, which differs from the steps necessary to address choking instances in older children and adults.

· Thump the infant gently but firmly five times on the middle of the back using the heel of your hand. The combination of gravity and the back blows should release the blocking object. Keep your fingers pointed up to avoid hitting the infant in the back of the head.

· Turn the infant face up on your forearm, resting on your thigh with the head lower than the trunk if the infant still isn’t breathing. Using two fingers placed at the center of the infant’s breastbone, give five quick chest compressions. Press down about 11/2 inches, and let the chest rise again in between each compression.

NEW LISTINGS!
(NAPSI)—The global pandemic brought home to many people just how interconnected the world has become. This is true about the need to protect the environment, as well. According to the National Institutes of Health, the way to preserve human health is by maintaining the environment because polluted air, water and land encourages such sicknesses as asthma and lead poisoning, while global warming fosters the spread of disease.
REAL ESTATE SECTION
Fortunately, throughout the country, efforts large and small are helping to resolve this. What’s Being Done For example, one major American corporation with a long, proud history of environmental sustainability and a strong track record of action and success has raised the bar on its environmental commitments and accelerated the progress of short- and long-term goals that meet or exceed environmental regulations. As Marc Bitzer, Chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corporation put it. “As we continue to navigate the impact of COVID-19, the health and safety of our employees and communities remain our priority. We strongly believe that our sustainability efforts are as important now as ever. These efforts are guided by a clear mission to earn trust and create demand while in constant pursuit of improving life at home.” To that end, the company has: • Reduced its absolute plant emissions by 18% by investing in efficiency and renewable energy; • Achieved zero waste to landfill in eight plants across three regions; • Accomplished a global waste-torecycling rate of 96%; and • Developed an innovative solution to reuse water from an existing chiller that saves 31 million gallons of water each year. What You Can Do For your part, you can help the environment these four ways: 1.Get your car a tune-up. Properly maintained vehicles get better gas mileage and emit fewer pollutants.

2ND ANNUAL SUMMER BASH
at Farmer’s Creekside a Huge Success! BY AMANDA DUDEK As rays from the descending sun danced on the nearby banks of the Oatka, the 2nd annual Summer Bash was just getting into full swing. Farmer’s Creekside Tavern & Inn in LeRoy once again hosted this funfilled celebration to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of WNY (CFF). Genesee Valley Publications staff were joined by several friends, family members, and advertising partners to help make this event even bigger than it was last year.
The Summer Bash was indeed a terrific success. Not only did this stunning local eatery provide the perfect atmosphere for celebration, but they also went above and beyond in their generosity. Farmer’s Creekside Tavern & Inn donated three huge gift baskets to our silent auction which garnered over $600 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of WNY. On behalf of GVP and CFF, we would like to thank Creekside for donating so much in support of such a worthy cause!
The Summer Bash was open to the public, and guests gathered along the tavern’s creek level patio, enjoying the outdoor bar and moving to the live music—thanks to Encore Events—flowing from the outdoor stage. On this patio as well as on one of its deck areas, guests strolled between vendors for select wine, brews, and spirits tastings.
Since 1955, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) has been working hard to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives. CFF funds research and drug development, advocates treatment tailored to the individual, and works to guarantee access to specialized care based on ever-developing best practices.
Sarah Christ and Kara Ivison of Home magazine produced by Genesee Valley Publications (GVP), joined Sarah Farmer and Maria Valencia of Farmer’s Creekside Tavern & Inn to make this possible. These vendors brought some of their finest and most popular selections. All were enthusiastic and gracious as they shared their specialties. Among these were such vendors as Thin Man Brewery, Opici Wine & Spirits, Ziobaffa Wine, Blue Nectar, Lockhouse Distillery, Ravines Wine Cellars, Rohrbach Brewing Co., Hercules Mulligan, Black Button Distilling, Genesee Brewery, BeerPass, Deep Eddy Vodka, Monsieur Touton, Norwhey Nordic Seltzers, and Iron Smoke Distillery.
Rochester’s Finest works with CFF in their mission to find a cure for all people living with CF. Thanks to the cystic fibrosis drug therapies now available, and thanks to the Foundation and its supporters, many people with CF are living into their 40’s and beyond! For more information about CFF and to purchase tickets for its end-of-the-year fundraising celebration at La Luna High Falls, visit https://finest.cff.org/Rochester.
Creekside itself offered a specially curated menu for the celebration, including select wines and brews, specialty cocktails, and delectable dishes such as its watermelon salad and its chicken French dip sandwich, not to mention mouthwatering hand-cut fries. As always, every possible item was made from scratch, right down to some of the simple syrups in the cocktails. Guests could simply could not get enough! “The Summer Bash at Creekside was awesome!” said guest and LeRoy resident Chuck Flynn. “The food, friends, food, music, & drink were superb! If you missed it, put it on your calendar next year, like, right now.” The Summer Bash was also part of GVP’s MacKenzie McGrain’s efforts as one of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s Rochester’s Finest. “I would like to thank everyone who participated in the silent auction to help raise over $2,000 in funds for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation,” said McGrain. “I am so grateful to my mentor, Christine White, for nominating me as one of Rochester’s Finest honorees this year, as well as to Patty Schwarzweller the director of CFF of Western New York. I would like to also thank Laurie Abbott, Sarah Christ, and Kara Ivison for guiding me to success before, during, and after the event. I am honored to be a part of such an amazing foundation.” Thank you to Carla Coots from Insight Photo for capturing our event!

MEMORIAL GIFTS HONOR LOVED ONES he loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation: Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group. Community foundation: Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about, such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community - such as a local park. According to CarePages, a company that produces free patient websites and offers community support for those coping with illness, families can choose to have their donations funneled to specific charities or nonprofit groups. Otherwise, funds can be allocated to a third party community fund that will distribute money to various organizations no matter where they are located.
AVON - June 30, 2022 at age 95. He is survived by his children, Edward (Laurie) Wolf, Lorie (Roger) Wolfanger; 8 grandchildren; 16 greatgrandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Mathias was predeceased by his wife, Maria Wolf; son, Helmut Wolf; parents, Martin and Rosina Wolf; 4 brothers. Mathias was owner and operator of the Old Beam Tavern in Ontario and Compro Tool in Canandaigua. He also worked for Castle Co. for over 30 years. A special thank you to the Avon Police Dept. and the Livingston Co. EMS for their assistance. His graveside service was held Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at 2:30 PM at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Rochester. His Memorial Service followed at 4 PM at the Lutheran Church of the Epiphany, Avon. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Epiphany, 6050 East Avon Lima Road, Avon, NY 14414 in his memory. To share a memory or send a condolence visit: stephensondoughertyfuneralhome.com
Medical tribute: Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Personal intentions: Those who would like to make a donation but cannot think of a charity to associate with their deceased loved one have a host of options at their disposal. Consider donating to a school or library, requesting materials be purchased in the decedent’s name. Otherwise, donate to a general scholarship fund, possibly at the decedent’s alma mater. Finish their work: If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Celebration of life for
Elsie May Baker Saturday, July 16th at 11am Memorial service will be held at the East Avon First Presbyterian Church, located at the corner of Routes 15 and 5&20. All friends and family welcome. She passed away suddenly at age 83 in Rochester, NY on October 2, 2021.
Celebration of Life for Judy Paine at Nunda Kiwanis Park Saturday, July 16, 2022 1:00-3:00pm
“No one ever prayed heartily without learning something.....” ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
Prayer is a highly personal thing, since we all discuss our affairs with our own version of a Supreme being in our own way. Everyone prays..... especially at times of extreme stress. Just as “there are no atheists in foxholes” so, too, there is no one who doesn’t turn to his God for help when he knows his own resources are not adequate for the need at hand. People in dire straits are the ones who are most apt to pray “heartily.” And, in telling God about our problems, we are very apt to gain new perspective..... perhaps even discover solutions for ourselves. In fact, this could be God’s answer to our prayer. Families of all faiths and creeds can be certain of perfectly appropriate services when they put their trust in us.

MAINTAIN SPARKLING CLEAR POOL WATER For cleanliness, water circulation and filtration is essential. This helps spread the chemicals to all areas of the pool and also helps to remove debris. Filters come in different types, including sand, diatomaceous earth, or DE, and cartridge. Each has its pros and cons. How long to run the filter depends on water temperature, gallons of water in the pool and the estimated water turnover rate of the filter. Pool owners can start with longer filter run times and gradually cut down until they find the right rate based on water appearance, according to popular pool forum Trouble Free Pools.

HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

ROOFING & SIDING
Smaller homes: Home sizes in the United States steadily increased for decades, eventually leading to an average of 2,453 square feet in 2014, according to U.S. Census figures. However, Realtor.com reported in 2015 that new construction homes have already begun to shrink by 40 square feet. There seems to be a slight trend toward more modest homes as people consider affordability and maintenance on larger properties. The National Association of Home Builders states buyers are now looking for smaller, more livable homes with flexible floor plans, energy-efficient appliances and plenty of storage space.

PLANNING AHEAD IS VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL RENOVATION Determine your motivation for renovating: Renovation projects often involve balancing needs and wants, and determining if a project is a necessity or a luxury can set the timeline and course of the project. Is the roof leaking? If so, immediate action is necessary. Could the kitchen be a bit more functional? If the kitchen is still manageable, a homeowner may be able to wait a little bit to get better prices on appliances or contracting services. Separating needs from wants helps homeowners map out a viable timeline that maximizes productivity and affordability.

RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS
OTHER
Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Parents who want to encourage their children to volunteer may find their efforts at doing so are more convincing if they volunteer themselves. A 2013 study published in the Journal of Adolescence examined the effects that parents who volunteer and talk about volunteering have on children. Researchers found that the children of volunteers were 27 percent more likely to volunteer than children whose parents did not volunteer. In addition, adolescents were 47 percent more likely to volunteer when their parents volunteered and talked about volunteering with their children.

HOW TO STAY MENTALLY SHARP AFTER RETIREMENT Consider delaying retirement. Even if early retirement is a dream, it might be better to work a little longer than you had planned. A 2021 study published in the journal SSM - Population Health found that postponed retirement is beneficial to cognitive function for all genders, races/ ethnicities, educational levels, and professional status. The study reported that individuals who waited until age 67 to retire experienced less cognitive decline than those who retired prior to turning 67.

DID YOU KNOW? The demand for qualified, talented nurses figures to grow in the years to come. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than half a million nurses are expected to retire by 2022. Couple that with an existing nursing shortage, and the BLS projects a need for 1.1 million registered nurses in the near future. A shortage also figures to affect Canada, where the Canadian Nurses Association recently estimated that the country would be forced to confront a nursing shortage of roughly 60,000 nurses by 2022. Various factors are contributing to the nursing shortage in both countries, including an increasingly large aging population that will require more and more nurses to meet its health care needs. In the United States, the Affordable Care Act, which was passed in 2010, increased access to health care for millions of people across the country, thereby creating a greater need for nurses and other health care professionals. In addition, a greater emphasis on preventive care in many countries across the globe figures to compel more people to visit their physicians even when they’re otherwise feeling healthy. As more people prioritize preventive care, the need for more nurses will likely increase.
*Before frosting a cake, brush both layers with apricot nectar. This will secure any crumbs and provide a smooth surface. -- L.H. in Illinois * For drains slowed by grease, sprinkle a half-cup each of salt and baking soda down the drain, and follow it with an entire kettle or pot of boiling water.
THINK TICKS! Ticks spread disease. Take steps to protect yourself and your family.
* If the smell in your cedar chest has faded, bring it back easily with extra-fine sandpaper. A very light sanding is all it takes in most cases.
HOW TO AVOID TICKS
* For delicious baked potatoes, boil a pot of salted water, add whole potatoes with skin, remove from heat and let stand for 15 minutes. Finish in oven for a sturdier skin. Start checking for doneness after 15 minutes in the oven. Baking time can be cut in half! -- J.L. in Florida * Remove that musty smell from stored clothes by adding either vinegar or ammonia to the wash water. Be sure to check for smell removal BEFORE drying, as the dryer can bake the smell into clothes, making it more difficult to remove. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

• Wear light-colored clothing to spot ticks easily. • Wear enclosed shoes, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Tuck pant legs into socks or boots and shirt into pants. • Check clothes and skin often for ticks while outdoors. • Use insect repellent. • Walk on cleared, well-traveled trails. Walk in the center of trails. Avoid dense woods and bushy areas. • Bathe or shower within 2 hours after going indoors (to wash off and easily find ticks.) • Do a full-body tick check at the end of the day and remove ticks right away
HOW TO REMOVE A TICK • Using fine tipped tweezers, grasp the tick near mouthparts as close to skin as possible. • Pull tick in an upward, steady motion away from skin. • Clean the bite site with soap and water, rubbing alcohol, or hydrogen peroxide. • Record date and location of tick bite. If a rash or flu-like symptoms appear, contact your health care provider as soon as possible. The risk of Lyme disease is lower if the tick is removed within 24-36 hours. FREE TICK REMOVAL KITS available to Livingston County residents (limited supply) For more information about tick borne diseases, please call or visit:

Gardeners Decades ago, a family member told us to plant English Ivy in the beds next to our fence in the back yard. Thirty years later it’s now taking over. What method do you recommend to stop it? Cutting it and pulling it out isn’t feasible. Thank you! It can be challenging, some might ask what harm it is in taking over as doesn’t require a mower. But, if you want to remove any unwanted plants the best way that I have found is using Lasagna Mulching. Lasagna gardening, also known as sheet mulching is a no-till no-dig gardening method that turns materials like kitchen waste, straw, and newspapers into rich, healthy compost. Everything you
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County use is pretty much the same things you would use to compost. Now you are just adding them directly to form an organic garden bed, and you don’t have to move compost. It’s already there! You can start making your lasagna garden any time of the year, but you can layer it up in the fall as you are putting your beds to bed, cover it up with plastic, and when it comes time to take off the plastic, you have great new compost and plant on that! To get started, cardboard or newspaper make an excellent bottom layer because they will smother grass and weeds. Water this bottom layer to hold it in place and
encourage decomposition. Then add a 2-inch layer of a carbon-rich “brown” material on top of the cardboard or newspaper layer, such as leaves, straw, black and white newspaper, sawdust, tea bags, or wood ash. Then add a 2-inch layer of nitrogen-rich” green” material such as grass clippings, kitchen scraps from fruits and vegetables, well-rotted horse or cow manure, coffee grounds, or plant cuttings without seeds. Garden
debris that contains weed seeds or diseased materials should not be used. Alternate layers of carbon-rich and nitrogen-rich material until the mulch reaches approximately 3 feet. You don’t need to turn the pile. - Sandy Vanno Master Gardener Warren County CC

DID YOU KNOW? Statistics from U.S. Youth Soccer indicate that millions of children across the country are taking to the sport that was once primarily associated with Europe and other parts of the world beyond the United States. According to U.S. Youth Soccer, more than three million youth players were registered to play soccer in 2014. That marks an amazing increase from just 40 years earlier, when barely more than 100,000 youths registered to play soccer. While the reasons behind the growing popularity of soccer within the United States are not officially known, one might reasonably trace American youths’ embrace of the sport to the U.S. Men’s National Team’s appearance in the 1990 World Cup. Though the team was defeated in each of its three matches in the 1990 World Cup, the appearance marked the United States’ first since 1950. In fact, participation in youth soccer in the United States in 2014 marked an 89 percent increase since 1990. In addition, the United States hosted the 1994 World Cup, likely generating even more interest in soccer, which many American youths now consider their favorite sport.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Study: the Second Half of Our Lives Sometimes the results of research and studies are suspect if we don’t trust the sources, but AARP and National Geographic recently published a joint study on the realities of the second half of life, and it doesn’t get any better than that. Their study covered the big topics as we age: health, relationships, financial security, housing, independent living, end of life, retirement and more. Here are some highlights: • We care most about our brain health, our independence and our relationships, in that order, as we move into our 70s. By the time we reach our 80s, it’s relationships that spike to the top of our list of concerns. • Guess what plunges by the time we reach our 70s? Work, and it’s no surprise. We’ve been there and done that, and the idea of climbing the ladder of success at work no longer appeals to us. • Health is a curious category, but it makes sense once you think about it. It seems that those who are the healthiest are the ones who are most concerned about their health, likely because they’d like to stay that way and remain active. They’re into walking and exercising and taking flu shots, whereas the ones who have a serious medical condition are less concerned, perhaps having accepted the reality of less-than-stellar health. But age plays a part in that: We’re most concerned about health in our 60s, much less concerned in our 70s, and very concerned again in our 80s, mostly about stamina, strength and flexibility. There’s something to be said for picking a form of exercise and sticking with it, especially if it helps with those three concerns. At the end of the day, the older we get, the more we care about meaningful relationships. As AARP noted, “Friends, family and community are the hallmarks of finding happiness. High temperatures and kittens don’t mix DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I live in hot, humid Florida and have the opportunity to adopt two kittens. My home has no air conditioning -- only ceiling and floor fans. When I return home during the summer, the indoor temperature can reach 95 degrees with high humidity. Can a kitten handle such high indoor temperatures and high humidity for nine hours a day? If there is any possibility of harm, I will not obtain the kittens. -- Ann T., via email DEAR ANN: If there’s doubt in your mind, you already know the answer. I commend you for thinking of the welfare of the kittens first. Now, I’ll tell you a similar story. During my first years out of college, I rented a small apartment in sunny, humid Orlando that had no air conditioning either. However, the first thing I purchased was a window unit air conditioner. Not for me, but for my cat. It was a significant expense, and it boosted my electric bill dramatically, but I didn’t think twice about it. Pets rely on us to keep them safe, fed and comfortable. An indoor cat doesn’t have control over the temperature and humidity in the home. As the temperature rises, they have few options to cool off -- no breezy, shady spots to lounge in, not much fresh air. At 95 degrees, even with a full bowl of water nearby, pets can suffer a heat injury. Kittens are even more vulnerable. If you’d like to adopt the kittens, first work out a way to keep your home’s temperature below 80 degrees. Pets are an investment in happiness. Their comfort and safety are part of that investment. Thank you again for thinking of the kittens’ safety.
STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * In the 1880s, businessman LaMarcus Thompson was so upset over the temptations presented by saloons and brothels that he decided to clean up what he viewed as one of America’s most immoral places—New York’s Coney Island. To that end he built the country’s first roller coaster in a bid to give folks some good, clean fun well away from sleazier pursuits.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the U.S. Department of Labor and data from the U.S. Census Bureau, registered nurse is the most common occupation for women in the United States labor force. Slightly less than 2.1 million women worked as registered nurses in 2017, the most recent year for which statistics are available. Such figures are harder to come by in regard to Canada, but Statista reports that the labor participation rate among women in Canada in 2018 was right around 64 percent. That rate marks a slight decrease from its 21st century peak in 2005, when 66.7 percent of women were active members of the Canadian workforce. In the United States, more than two million women worked as secretaries or administrative assistants in 2017, making these professions the second most common occupation among female workers. Elementary and middle school teachers was the third most common occupation for female professionals, employing more than 1.9 million women in 2017. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau also indicates that women have the lion’s share of jobs in an assortment of professions, including preschool and kindergarten teachers, secretaries and administrative assistants, childcare workers, and dental assistants. Women hold at least 92 percent of the jobs in each of those professions in the United States.

What is wrong with people? I help a neighbor who runs a consignment shop outside of [local town]. It has clothing bins for donations of clothing and shoes outside in her parking lot. People keep leaving items like glassware, children’s toys, old furniture, etc. The truck only picks up the clothing donations in the bins. The store owner must then pay to dispose of all the stuff people leave there. We even left a note out there asking people to please donate [those items] elsewhere or to put it at the end of their own driveway with a “free” sign. If it’s junk, please dispose of it yourself. It has been costly for the shop owner, who runs a small business, and hurtful (to say the least) to find a new pile of stuff there every week!
Great Job! Great job to the crews, RG&E, Frontier, Spectrum and the multiple tree service companies and anyone else for cleaning up the mess after the big storm. They worked nonstop, and I appreciate it. Thanks! The Gnomes did it! We have a back shade garden in our yard. There are gnome houses, and gnomes running rampant through the garden. Someone added to our Gnome Village. Thank you to whoever installed the three little gnomes to Summers Street. They are a great addition! Very thoughtful of you!
Time to End This is a touchy subject, but I’ll say it anyways. When will we start considering impeachment of all our leaders in Washington? I’m not taking sides in politics, but at what point do we all realize what’s happening across America? If I don’t do my job at work, I get fired. I see no difference here.
Thank you, Minnehan's Restaurant! RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS Ridesharing is a growing trend among travelers from all walks of life. Some proponents of ridesharing support the concept because they feel it’s an eco-friendly means of traveling, while others find it’s a great way to save money. Still others employ third-party ridesharing services as a responsible, affordable way to travel when going out for a night on the town. With a greater number of people sharing rides and interacting with strangers than ever before, safety while ridesharing is an issue to take seriously. While ridesharing trips often occur without incident, there have been some instances of violent altercations involving drivers and passengers. According to the Taxicab, Limousine and Paratransit Association, ridesharing companies use a background check service to confirm criminal convictions and to make sure drivers are legally able to drive. However, these services may not perform FBI fingerprinting checks conducted by law enforcement officials, whereas taxi drivers are subjected fingerprinting. So some ridesharing drivers who have committed crimes in the past but have never been caught may pass ridesharing background checks, but they might not pass tests that taxi companies would insist they submit to, such as fingerprinting tests. While ridesharing, whether it entails carpooling or using an established ridesharing service, can be convenient, passengers must take steps to ensure their own safety when sharing rides.

Cuff Location Matters for BP Reading ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have always read that when you are having your blood pressure taken, your arm should be elevated above your heart. When mine is taken this way, it is normal, around 120/70. When I go to the doctor, my blood pressure is taken with my arm hanging at my side. I often get a much higher reading taken this way, say, 140/90. Is there a correct way to take it, and does it affect the reading? My doctor said the position doesn’t matter and wants to prescribe medication. -- U.P. ANSWER: When taking the blood pressure, the goal is to approximate the blood pressure in the heart. That means that the blood pressure cuff should be at the level of the heart. If the blood pressure cuff is above the heart, then the blood pressure reading will be artificially low. If the blood pressure cuff is dangling below the level of the heart, the reading will be high. For every 10 cm (about 4 inches) above the heart, the blood pressure will be about 7 mm of mercury too low. If I stretch out my arm as high as I can above my heart, I can get it about 30 cm higher than my heart, which would be enough to explain the difference between the 140/90 and 120/70 you have observed. However, for most people when sitting up straight, a properly placed cuff on the arm will approximate the same level as the heart. Although you are right that the position matters, it sounds like the doctor’s office is taking the reading correctly. I should also note that the feet should be resting on the floor, not dangling, which can artificially raise the blood pressure. The arm should be supported while taking the blood pressure. I recommend taking the blood pressure three times and using the average. Given how important blood pressure is, correct technique is essential in order to properly recommend who should get blood pressure treatment. Evidence is increasing that a 24-hour home blood pressure device is more accurate at determining who might need medication, especially in suspected white coat hypertension, where the readings are artificially high just because a person is in the office (even if they don’t feel nervous). ***

WHY THE FLU SHOT IS SO IMPORTANT IN 2020
Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings
As the world continues to confront the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, it’s imperative that people everywhere take every step necessary to protect themselves and others. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that a flu vaccine will not protect people against COVID-19. However, flu vaccines have been shown to reduce the risk of illness related to the flu. Those illnesses weaken people’s immune systems, making them more vulnerable to other viruses, including COVID-19. Flu vaccines have also been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization. That’s a significant benefit of being vaccinated, as people who get their flu shots can indirectly help hospitals conserve potentially scarce resources. Many people may be concerned about going out and getting a flu shot in 2020. However, the CDC notes that getting a flu shot in 2020 is an essential part of protecting your health and the health of your family.

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA A KEY TO COMPASSIONATE CARE Alzheimer’s disease is one of the more prominent forms of dementia, but there are many additional types of dementia that also can cause both physical and cognitive alterations. Understanding the complexity of dementia can be beneficial to both dementia sufferers and their caregivers. Dementia is a general term used to define a decline in mental ability severe enough that it can interfere with daily life, offers the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia. Dementia is not a disease but a term used to describe a wide range of symptoms. The words “senility” and “dementia” often are incorrectly used interchangeably. However, serious mental decline is not a normal part of aging.

DID YOU KNOW? The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that children and adolescents get 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. The CDC advises that such physical activity should include aerobic activity and muscle and bone strengthening exercises. Aerobic activity should take up most of kids’ daily physical activities and can include moderate activities, such as brisk walking, or more intense activities like running. Parents should make sure kids include some vigorous aerobic activity in their physical activity routines at least three days per week. Muscle strengthening activities do not mean parents should get their youngsters in the gym as soon as possible. Rather, activities like gymnastics or pushups done three times per week can be enough to help kids build strong muscles. The CDC notes that as kids reach adolescence, they may start structured weighttraining programs to strengthen their muscles. Jumping rope or running three times per week can serve as kids’ bone-strengthening exercises.

Avon Central School Vacancies For 2022-2023 School Year Avon Central School District is the center of learning for approximately 1,000 students from Universal Pre-K through grade 12. Located in northern Livingston County, the district combines the benefits of a tight-knit rural community with proximity to the technology and cultural opportunities of Rochester, New York, just 20 miles to the north.
(NAPSI)—Don’t let window replacement become a “pane” in your wallet. There’s a disconnect between saving money on energy with window replacements, according to government agencies. In fact, they found, it may take decades to recoup the cash spent on the installation of new, energy-efficient windows. The Problem The assessed value of adding 20 new energy-efficient windows in California, for example, may range from $10,220 to $18,580 based on a 2019 building assessors manual listing $511 to $929 for each window. Annual energy savings for the replacement of existing windows in a home are from $27 to $111 for dual-pane windows and $126 to $465 for single-pane windows, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This means it may take decades to financially justify window replacements based on energy savings alone.

SAVE ENERGY AND MONEY
“Window films professionally installed on structurally soundsingle or double-pane windows may reduce energy consumption by as much as 30 percent, while the installation cost may be 91.5 percent less than putting in new windows,” explained Darrell Smith of the nonprofit International Window Film Association. Conservation methods can help save energy and preserve natural resources, but business owners may also be intrigued by the potential cost-savings of conservation. Utility costs vary depending on the size of a business, but the U.S. Small Business Administration notes that prospective business owners must estimate and include such costs when seeking loans to start their businesses. Estimated utility costs can be intimidating, especially for those owners who have never before owned their own businesses. Traditional conservation methods like recycling and reusing are great ways to conserve and save around the office, but business owners also can embrace some other ways to lower their office energy costs while benefitting the planet at the same time.

Commercial Truck Drivers
Consider design Design your résumé so it will look good whether it’s viewed on a screen or a mobile phone or printed on paper. Classic serif style fonts can make a résumé seem dated, so select modern fonts that are crisp. The idea is for the résumé to look balanced and clear, without being overdone with modifications, like italics and bold lettering. However, a spot of color could provide much-needed attention.

DID YOU KNOW? According to the American Cancer Society, the average age at the time of diagnosis of testicular cancer is 33. Young and middle-aged men are the most likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer, though the ACS notes that 14 percent of cases occur in children, teens and men over the age of 55. The ACS estimates that roughly 440 men will die of testicular cancer in 2021. Though that’s troubling, testicular cancer can usually be treated successfully. In fact, the ACS notes that a man’s lifetime risk of dying from the disease is one in 5,000. However, the incidence rate of testicular cancer has been increasing in many countries, including the United States, for several decades. The reasons for that are unknown, though the rise in incidences underscores the need for men, especially young men, to discuss testicular cancer, including its risk factors and symptoms, with their physicians.

WORKING PARENTS CAN CREATE BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE
Get that “YOU’RE HIRED” look.
Many working parents struggle to maintain a healthy balance between their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families. A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner.
