TALES of

TAILS!

KIDS AND FAMILIES!! Cris Riedel’s virtual stories of animals & their tails are AWESOME! Cris’ video of six stories will be available at www.storiesconnect.com July 10th and all summer long. The program is free and family friendly. Listeners are invited to ponder some creative questions and create some drawings or stories. Then send them in to Cris! Artistic responses will be posted online in the Tails Gallery on Cris’ site. Look for the tail questions in the Gallery on July 10, and at the ‘tail end’ of the show! This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York Legislature and administered by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.

36 Main St., Mount Morris • (585) 658-1083 WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees. To learn more about Carhartt’s latest pants and knee pads, visit www.Carhartt.com. To watch the brand’s latest video, “61 Workers, One Mission,” visit the Carhartt channel on YouTube. Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Keeping Track At some point we need to start making notes. Maybe you’re not there yet. But that day might sneak up on you when you discover that you’ve forgotten to mail the check for your property taxes. Or worse, when a police officer stops you and says your license tags expired -- three months ago. Forgetting the car tag might be excusable if your town no longer sends out notices. Or if you had the same vehicle for eight years and tags were always due the same month each year, and now you have a new vehicle with a different due date. But when you’ve lived in the same home for 30 years and you forget to pay the property taxes ... that’s when you know you need to start making notes. A good way to do this is with an annual calendar. When you flip the page, there in bright letters are your tasks for the month. If one of the tasks happens to fall in the first week of the next month, make a note in the last week of the previous month. Use the previous year’s calendar, flip through all the pages, make your notes and you’ll be all set. ... Unless those tiny squares just won’t do the trick, which is possible if you’re still working or have a long list of tasks to accomplish on a weekly basis. For many years I’ve used an 8-by-11 notebook. Each page is a week, divided with lines into six boxes, dated. The weekend, when theoretically there are no urgent tasks, gets Saturday and Sunday in one box. It might seem silly to start keeping such a detailed calendar of things you need to do. After all, haven’t you always remembered when the car tags are due? Until you don’t, and are reminded by a police officer. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

ENJOYING THRILLS AT AMUSEMENT PARKS Carousels are favorites for children and adults alike. Riders ride wooden horses and other animals as the carousel moves in a circle. According to the trivia provider Mental Floss, carousels were first used to give horseback riding lessons to Turkish and Arabian cavalry members. Crusaders brought the idea to Europe, and the attraction became a fun ride.

CLAR’S COLLISION Finding t he right f am ily car Cost: W hile cost should not be the only consideration w hen choosing a family vehicle, parents must determine their budget before beginning their search for a new ride. Aside from a home, cars are the most expensive purchase many people w ill ever make, w hich only highlights the importance parents must place on finding the right vehicles for their families. Luxury cars, SUVs and sports cars tend to be the most expensive vehicles on the market, and young parents just starting out or parents of school-aged kids w ith college educations to consider might find that less expensive vehicles make the most practical sense for their families. Parents also must determine if they are financing or leasing their vehicles or buying them outright. Financing and leasing often requires full insurance coverage, w hich can be pricey, w hile buying outright affords vehic le ow ners to c hoose the level of c overage they are most comfortable w ith. Determine insurance costs on a given model before driving off the lot w ith the pedal to the metal.

WHAT TO DO WHEN A PROJECT STALLS Honestly assess whether or not you can finish the job. Do-it-yourselfers may have the abilities to complete a project, but they should not let their pride get in the way of their ultimate goal, which is the completion of the project. In addition to money, time or lack thereof, is often the culprit behind stalled projects. Homeowners with full-time jobs, families or both may not be able to find the time to complete a job in a timely fashion. If the project has been stuck in neutral and no sudden windfall of free time is on the horizon, start contacting contractors to finish the job for you.

FINDING THE RIGHT FENCING Bamboo is a less traditional fencing option that may appeal to homeowners who want to do something that’s both different and eco-friendly. Bamboo grows naturally, which should appeal to homeowners who want their homes to have as little negative impact on the environment as possible. Bamboo provides ample privacy and comes in various styles. Homeowners should consult with a fencing specialist before choosing a style so they can be certain they choose the most climate-appropriate option.

PREVENT DIY INJURIES Safety goggles and glasses are a must-have for any do-it-yourselfer. They will provide a barrier between the eye and flying debris. According to VisionWeb, an eye education resource, most of the 110,000 eye injuries that occur each year in homes within the United States result from splashes with household cleaners, flying debris such as wood chips, or getting hit by branches. Many of these injuries can be prevented by wearing eye protection.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring. HOW TO CONSERVE WATER AT HOME Conservation is an essential component of an eco-friendly lifestyle. Conserving the planet’s natural resources can have a profound impact on the planet, and conserving at home is a great way for men and women to get the ball rolling on their conservation efforts. One of the most effective ways to conserve at home is to reduce water consumption. Few people give much thought to how much water they consume at home, as water bills tend to be considerably lower than other utilities like energy and phone. But even if efforts to conserve water at home may not make a dramatic impact on monthly utility bills, many measures can go a long way toward preserving one of the planet’s most precious resources.

People can also support beekeepers’ work by purchasing local honey. Not only does it keep jobs in the area, but some research also suggests that consuming local honey can help reduce seasonal allergies. WebMD says the practice is based on immunotherapy. Local honey contains traces of local pollen that may be responsible for seasonal allergies. Repeated exposure to small doses of this pollen might help bodies develop natural immunities.

RESTORE RUSTY TOOLS

OTHER

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

AVON TEAMS COME BACK STRONG WITH 6 SECTIONAL WINS! BY AMANDA DUDEK

W

hen times are hard, there are always those who rise to the challenge and turn it into opportunity. Six Avon Central School teams did just that, bringing home six Section titles this season. The families, coaches, and community couldn’t be any prouder! The victorious varsity teams were Football, Baseball, Softball, Cheer, Boys Basketball and Girls Soccer. Avon Athletic Director and Football Coach Andy Englert says while this is the football team’s seventh Section V title (1983, 1986, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2014, 2021), the extraordinary circumstances as well as the team’s close relationship with the community and each other made it exceptional. “It was a different year with football starting in March, but I was very proud of the team’s performance throughout the season,” he said. “As a coach, I felt that the team had a special bond and believed that they could finish the season on top!” Softball Coach Pete Leone was struck not only by his team’s performance but by their extra effort, as well. “I’m extremely proud of the hard work and dedication of the players throughout the season,” he praised. “Without a season in 2020 and with only a two-week preseason this year, the girls had to put in extra time to improve fundamentally—and they did. They came in early on game days for extra hitting and fielding— something I’ve never had a team do previously.” The softball team’s hard work clearly paid off, netting them their first ever sectional title. “No Avon Braves softball team had ever won either a division title or a sectional title, so this year’s sectional title was quite an accomplishment! It was both a pleasure and privilege to coach them, and I can’t think of a more deserving group of champions!” Coach Pete Leone The fact that sports had finally returned after more than a year-long hiatus only served to sweeten these victories! “We were excited to hear there was actually going to be a season!” exclaimed Cheer Coach Shaun Loomis. “It gave the girls the opportunity to do what they love. They were committed and determined to be the best.” Loomis added that masks and a short season didn’t slow these students down, noting “these girls didn’t let any of that stop them from achieving their goals.” Virtually and without the encouraging cheers of fans, friends, and family; Avon’s cheer team “came out on top. As Loomis observed, “They achieved two 1st place titles along with being crowned grand champions. They also earned LCAA grand champions and 1st place. The biggest achievement was winning the Section V Class C1 title—I couldn’t be prouder as a coach to watch these athletes never give up and work together to get what they wanted!” Boys Basketball and Baseball Coach, Rob Fries, noticed the same focused determination from his players. “Just being back on the field in 2021 was pretty special—our guys worked hard to learn from our mistakes early on and committed to using those mistakes to improve.” The baseball team and the boys basketball team showed just how much they appreciated this unexpected gift of a season with their drastic improvement and leading in the baseball game to what Coach Fries calls, “an overtime thriller in the finals.” “It was even more special because we were able to do it on our home court,” explained Fries. “The last two weeks the team really came together and believed in each other, and you could see us peaking at the right time.” The team’s finals game ended in cinematic perfection with a

victory in the bottom of the ninth to the enthusiastic cheers of Avon fans. “It was a culmination of a great year for Avon athletics,” said Fries. “It is a moment that will last forever for these guys.” This sentiment was echoed by Girls Soccer Coach, Katlyn Bennetti when she said she believed her players would “remember this unique season for the rest of their lives.” Coach Bennetti praised her team working hard independently and for rising above uncertainty to victory. “We had many Zoom meetings and were never promised tomorrow,” she recalled. “We stayed positive, pushed through, and managed to have a very successful, fun season. I am so happy for this year’s group of seniors!” Each of the 6 winning teams were escorted home by Avon Fire Trucks, lights on, sirens screaming. The whole town could hear it, and fans went down to the circle to see them do victory laps in the busses! This “Winner’s Welcome” is such a fun Avon community tradition! Grateful for this incredible season, Coach Englert concluded, “Thank you to the Administration, parents, community, and fans for their support throughout the 2021 season!”

Petty behavior To the officer who was giving out numerous parking tickets on Friday evening, July 2nd to the people who parked at the abandoned [local building] in [local town] in order to simply walk across the street and attend [local event]. Seriously? For many of these people, it was the first time in over a year that they were finally able to get out and do something fun, and your response is for them to return to their car and see that they have been slapped with a parking fine for parking at a vacant premises? Wake up! Community relations do matter!

S E V RA Thank you so much! Tom Martin: what a true gentleman! My father always told my brothers before they left the house each time to behave like a gentleman and a scholar at all times. Tom, you certainly are one, a country one at that from beautiful Caledonia. Thank you for calling me about finding my wallet. Left it on the top of my car! Thanks, landscapers! It’s so sad to see how the public and employers treat these hard-working underpaid landscapers. Mind you, most of these landscapers worked through the whole pandemic in all kinds of weather, and physical jobs for peanuts! Show some love for these true hard-working men and women!

Borrowing from Social Security I’m 85 yrs old. I started working when I was 14 yrs old. I paid into Social Security until I stopped working when I was almost 76 years old. I can remember several occasions when our Social Security fund was robbed. Earlier this year, $435 billion was stolen (if my memory is correct), from Social Security. In the last month while there were cries of the imminent bankruptcy of Medicare, billions were stolen again. Medicare is not a gift; we paid into that fund for many years. Each month, I pay over $148. Higher wage earners pay hundreds more a month. So the story goes again. Also, Medicaid and Medicare are always referred to in the same breath. People do not pay for Medicaid.

Independence Day article Thanks to Ken Paulson for his story on the Declaration of Independence! We appreciated reading that! Huge thanks! I would like to say a huge thank you to the Ontario County Sheriff, the West Bloomfield Ambulance, Canandaigua Ambulance, the ALS Crew, and all volunteers or not who acted so fast on June 22nd, 2021, around 3:15pm. The first responder on scene was an Ontario County Sheriff who replaced my husband’s tourniquet with a much better one, and everyone’s wisdom on artery lacerations saved my husband’s life! He had cut his thigh and was bleeding out fast. I called 911 and told the dispatcher what I needed, and they, in turn, had a Sheriff in the area. God Bless You All! Thanks as well to the nurses and technicians on 3 East and ER and surgical doctors and nurses. Surgery took about four hours! Started at 10pm and ended about 2am. I ask people to try to be kind, remember police, fire, ambulance, etc. are all here to help. Shake someone’s hand and tell them how appreciated they are, please. More praise, less grumble. Prayers and appreciation to all of you who had part in saving another life! You all are the best! You give us hope! Stay safe; stay well. Blessings from the man with a box cutter & wife.

What Is Treatment for a Fatty Liver? ---

Dr. Randall Freeman

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old woman. I am 5 feet, 2 inches tall and weigh 107 pounds. I take no medication. When I went to the doctor last week, he found that my alkaline phosphatase was 176, my ALT 10, and my AST 11. He told me I had fatty liver and to get a scan, but I had no way to get to the place to have it done. He did not say anything else about it. I have no symptoms. Does this sound like fatty liver to you? I did not really like my doctor, but with my insurance it is hard to change doctors. If I do have fatty liver, is there anything I can do for it? -- J.F. ANSWER: Fatty liver is an increasingly common problem. Risk factors include being overweight and having diabetes, high blood pressure and abnormal blood cholesterol levels. Alcohol use is also a cause of fatty liver, and all people with fatty liver are strongly recommended to abstain from alcohol entirely. The primary treatment is diet and weight loss. It sounds like there was some missed communication between you and your doctor. Fatty liver is a possibility; however, it does not seem likely to me, as you have not identified any of the risk factors, and you are certainly not overweight (if anything, you are a bit underweight). Further, although the alkaline phosphatase can be elevated in fatty liver (yours is just a bit high), it is more common for AST and ALT to be elevated, which yours are not. An ultrasound scan is a good, but not definitive, way of looking for fatty liver. A liver biopsy is still the definitive test, but it’s often not done in people whose history, physical exam and ultrasound are all suggestive. A slightly abnormal alkaline phosphatase does not necessarily mean you have a liver problem. Bone issues (fractures, Paget’s disease of bone, high thyroid and parathyroid hormone levels) can cause a high alkaline phosphatase, too. Additional liver tests -- checking the GGT level or specifically what kind of alkaline phosphatase you have (by isoenzyme analysis) -- can make the source of the elevated alkaline phosphatase clearer. Getting an ultrasound scan and additional blood tests is a reasonable place to start. Unfortunately, lack of confidence in your physician is a different problem. If you really can’t get a new doctor, then you need to have a conversation about proceeding with evaluation in such a way that you can do so while being confident that you are getting good advice.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Drain and oven cleaners: Many drain and oven cleaners contain lye (sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide), a chemical derived from salt or wood ash that is used to break down other substances, particularly those that are sticky. Lye is quite caustic in high amounts and extremely alkaline, which can cause burns and skin irritation. Lye is also found in soaps and detergents. When handled correctly in safe amounts, lye can be used safely. However, it can be dangerous if it gets into the hands of children or is touched by pets.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Help Fight Off Fleas With Brewer’s Yeast DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Regarding cats with fleas, I have had great success eliminating fleas by adding powdered brewer’s yeast to their food. One of my cats even licked it out of her bowl dry. Brewer’s yeast is usually available at health food stores. -- Suzanne F., via email

Ways to Become More Active Every Day In addition to working toward at least 150 minutes of physical activity each week, it’s important to avoid being sedentary, when possible. You can do that by making choices that build activity in your day. Some examples include: • Taking the stairs • Printing to the printer farthest away from your desk at work • Getting off the bus or subway one stop early • Parking in the farthest space from the door • Walking around while you are on the phone or having walking meetings

DEAR SUZANNE: Thank you for the tip! Brewer’s yeast is a great nutritional supplement for cats and dogs, and many owners have observed that their pets have fewer fleas when it’s added to their food. It can certainly be a strong asset to a well-rounded flea fighting strategy. For cats and small dogs, sprinkle about half a teaspoon on their food at mealtimes. For medium dogs up to 30 pounds, increase that to a teaspoon. For every 30 pounds over that, add a teaspoon of brewer’s yeast. Consistency is important. Brewer’s yeast, unfortunately, does not repel ticks, so pets -- even those who stay indoors -- should be checked regularly throughout the spring, summer and fall for these little hangers-on. Brush your pet’s coat daily to remove flea eggs and any remaining fleas. Owners may need to use stronger flea and tick treatments in addition to brewer’s yeast, but it’s still a great ally in the fight against fleas. Other flea prevention strategies include vacuuming your home twice a week during peak season to reduce tracked-in fleas and their eggs, and quickly ruffling your pet’s coat with a towel and cleaning their paws when they come indoors. Bathing your dog or cat can help reduce irritation from flea bites, but only use shampoos designed for pets to keep their skin from drying out and becoming more irritated. Send your flea-fighting tips to ask@ pawscorner.com.

THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY Mental side effects Stress can have an adverse effect on mood and has even been linked to depression, which the World Health Organization reports is the leading cause of disability across the globe. People suffering from stress also may experience anxiety, restlessness and feelings of being overwhelmed. In addition, stress can compromise a person’s ability to focus, adversely affecting a person’s ability to complete their work-related tasks. That’s not insignificant, as 61 percent of respondents in the 2017 “Stress in America” survey reported that work was a significant source of their stress.

Combine garlic, chili powder, oregano, thyme, cumin, coriander, pepper, cinnamon, sugar, oil, lime juice, and orange juice. Add chicken and toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes, turning once. Grill according to instructions below. Sprinkle with salt. Serve hot with avocado mango salsa if you prefer. Outdoor grill: Grill skin-side down over medium-hot coals until skin is crisp, 7 minutes. Turn and continue grilling until chicken is opaque with no trace of pink, another 5 minutes. Indoor grill: Preheat broiler. Broil skin-side up until skin is crisp, 7 minutes. Turn and continue cooking until chicken is opaque with no trace of pink, another 5 minutes. To slash the chicken breasts: With a sharp knife, cut 3 parallel slashes through the skin, about 1/4-inch deep. Marinate chicken up to 2 hours in advance. Cover and refrigerate, turning several times in marinade.

Avocado Mango Salsa Makes 12/3 cups 1 mango, finely diced 1 avocado, peeled, halved, pitted, and finely diced 1/2 red onion, finely chopped 1 red chile, seeded and finely chopped 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons finely chopped mint leaves Salt Tabasco® Combine mango, avocado, onion, chile, lime juice, vinegar, oil, and mint. Add salt and Tabasco® to taste. Cover and let stand for 30 minutes at room temperature to allow flavors to blend. Serve chilled or at room temperature. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Thank you & Blessings, Joyce and Family WHAT IS A TRUST? A trust is a relationship in which another party is given authority to handle a person’s assets for the benefit of that person’s beneficiaries. When making a trust, a person will need to designate someone as a trustee, who will be tasked with distributing assets in accordance to the terms dictated in the trust. There are many types of trusts, and working with an attorney who specializes in estate planning can help men and women determine which type of trust, if any, is best for them.

Sandra (Sandy) passed away peacefully from natural causes. She was born in Odessa, Texas in 1942 and grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She received a BA in Geology from Washington University in St. Louis, MO, in 1964. That same year she married William J. Brennan (d. 2016) and they remained together for more than 50 years. Early in her career she worked at the U.S. Geological Survey in Colorado and she taught high school math in Mt. Morris, NY shortly after moving to Livingston County in 1968. Sandy received a Master’s in Geology from the University of Buffalo in 1977. Beginning in 1978, she embarked on an impressive career at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation in East Avon, NY. As Senior Engineering Geologist, she was the first woman to work at that location in a non-clerical position. From 1987 to 1996 she worked at the New York State DEC in Albany as Bureau Director of the Division of Mineral Resources. While in Albany she received a second Master’s in Public Affairs from Rockefeller College at the University of Albany. In 1996 Sandy returned to the DEC in East Avon as Natural Resources Supervisor, where she was in charge of Minerals, Fish, Wildlife, Land and Forests, Wetlands, and the Genesee Valley Greenway. She retired in 2003 after 25 years of service. Following her retirement, Sandy continued to pursue many wideranging interests, but especially in local government where she served Livingston County and the Village of Geneseo in numerous capacities. She served as County President of the League of Women Voters, as a volunteer on the Geneseo Central School Board’s Citizen Advisory Committee on Energy and Conservation, as Vice Chairman of the Genesee Valley Environmental Association, as a member of the Village Board for 12 years and as Deputy Mayor for 6 years. Her tireless efforts in support of the community is perhaps her most enduring legacy. In 2019 the Geneseo Young at Heart Club and the Town of Geneseo recognized her as a Geneseo Seniorama Honoree. In retirement Sandy also worked as a certified and award-winning mediator for the Center for Dispute Settlement for 16 years. She served as a member of the Board of the Livingston County Historical Society Board for 5 years, 3 of those years as President. Sandy was also actively involved in numerous clubs, such as the Monday Evening Class where she served as Vice President and President and as a member of the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. A consummate world traveler, Sandy was always ready to leave on a moment’s notice whether it be Paris or Kathmandu. As a lover of nature and the environment, she was committed to preserving flora and fauna of all kinds for future generations. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held within the next few months. Arrangements entrusted to the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., Livonia-Honeoye.

Dealing with a sudden, unexpected death of a beloved friend or family member can be even more difficult, especially for those people who have to make important financial decisions while grieving. Adults can be as specific as they prefer to be when preplanning their funerals, and doing so gives relatives peace of mind knowing that their loved ones’ funeral services were conducted in accordance to their own wishes.

GRAVE STONES The term “gravestone” is derived from the Jewish custom of visitors placing stones at the head of the grave as a means of honoring the deceased. This tradition of placing pebbles on a grave dates back thousands of years. Yet, the exact origin of the practice remains unclear. One explanation is based on the belief that Jewish priests, at the time of the Temple in Jerusalem, became ritually impure if they came within four feet of a corpse. To guard against this possibility, graves were marked with piles of rocks to warn the passing priests to keep their distance. Today, the tradition is largely followed so that cemetery visitors can show that the grave has been visited and tribute paid. A funeral is a meaningful event that can help ease the pain of separation that naturally accompanies death. It is a time when respect, concern, and appreciation for a life that has been lived can be expressed in a sincere manner. To meet the unique needs and budgets of every family we serve, KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME offers a diverse range of funeral services and products. Please give us a call to learn about our funeral services. If you have any questions about our funeral and memorial services, please call (585) 346-5401. We invite you to tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “Tombstones covered the dale, the smooth marble surfaces bright. She had spent days here as a teenager, though not out of any awareness of mortality. Like every adolescent, she intended to live forever.” ~ Thomm Quackenbush

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Get cobwebs off a window screen with a lint roller. * Want to make that summer at-home pedicure last? Don’t skip the base coat or a UV topcoat. The base coat will allow the color to adhere evenly and better. Then the topcoat will protect the color from the sun while giving it a little extra shine. * “Use an over-the-door shoe holder to house your makeup and hair accessories, plus jewelry and other personal items. You can trim a curtain or piece of fabric to fit over the length of it, and tie it to the top if it looks too messy in your room.” -- M.K. in North Carolina * Use this trick to freshen your stuffed animals. Dust with baking soda and put several together in a large paper grocery bag until it’s half full. Fold the top of the bag down and shake vigorously. Remove the stuffed friends and shake off any excess baking soda. For good measure, put the dustedoff toys in a low- or no-heat dryer cycle for 10-15 minutes. * Hashbrowns can be made on a waffle iron. Coat liberally with canola oil or butter-flavored nonstick spray, and add shredded potatoes and finely diced onion. Allow the iron to cook the potatoes to your desired level of crispness, and flip out both sides onto a plate. They will be both crisp and soft!

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

* Honey has amazing properties, and one of them is its antiseptic powers. You can even use it on pimples. Just a tiny dab will help keep bacteria responsible for breakouts from taking over. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.

Avon Area 303-2970 EFFICIENCY AT WORK Figures from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that the average worker spent 26 minutes traveling to work, the most recent year for which the USCB has data. That marks a nearly 20 percent increase in average commute time since 1980. Things aren’t much better in Canada, where the National Household Survey found that the average commuter spends just over 25 minutes traveling to work each day. People who commute via public transportation can use the time they spend going to and from the office to answer emails, review schedules or even work on projects. Commuters who drive themselves to work can consider switching to public transportation or, if possible, move closer to their offices so they spend less time sitting in their vehicles, where they have no choice but to be unproductive.
