Protect Your Mobile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) Mobile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disconcerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012.

When a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to more than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity.

The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year. While identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like going through trash and stealing wallets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device. • SATURDAY•

* The maddening but addictive Rubik’s Cube was created by accident. Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition.

When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

DID YOU KNOW?

Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS

Ridesharing is a growing trend among travelers from all walks of

Some proponents of ridesharing support the concept because they feel it’s an eco-friendly means of traveling, while others find it’s a great way to save money. Still others employ third-party ridesharing services as a responsible, affordable way to travel when going out for a night on the town.

With a greater number of people sharing rides and interacting with strangers than ever before, safety while ridesharing is an issue to take seriously. While ridesharing trips often occur without incident, there have been some instances of violent altercations involving drivers and passengers. According to the Taxicab, Limousine and Paratransit Association, ridesharing companies use a background check service to confirm criminal convictions and to make sure drivers are legally able to drive. However, these services may not perform FBI fingerprinting checks conductedbylawenforcementofficials, whereastaxidriversaresubjected fingerprinting. So some ridesharing drivers who have committed crimes in the past but have never been caught may pass ridesharing background checks, but they might not pass tests that taxi companies would insist they submit to, such as fingerprinting tests.

While ridesharing, whether it entails carpooling or using an established ridesharing service, can be convenient, passengers must take steps to ensure their own safety when sharing rides.

Remove lime buildup. Vinegar is good for cleaning faucets and showerheads. Make a paste of one teaspoon of vinegar and two tablespoons of salt. Apply to sink fixtures and rub with a cloth. Fill a plastic baggie with vinegar and attach to the showerhead with a rubber band. Let sit a few hours to overnight and then rinse away the mineral deposits.

I think the true gardener is a lover of his flowers, not a critic of them. I think the true gardener is the reverent servant of Nature, not her truculent, wife-beating master. I think the true gardener, the older he grows, should more and more develop a humble, grateful and uncertain spirit. ~Reginald Farrer, In a Yorkshire Garden, 1909

Fence Etiquette Prevents Disputes:

There are certain things you must do and should do if you plan to erect a fence. Most people find neighbors appreciate being informed of any decisions you are thinking of making to the property that can affect their views or their adjoining property. Before drawing up fence plans with a contractor, talk to the neighbors on either side of your home and gauge their receptiveness to a fence. At this point, you may want to consider offering to make the fencing project a joint deal to save money should the neighbors decide to install a fence as well. Contractors will often discount if they have several customers doing an installation at the same time. Property owners can save by splitting the costs of the shared walls of the fence where their property lines meet.

STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER

Garden during the cooler parts of the day. Lawncare professionals advise against watering lawns between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. in the summertime, as water is more likely to evaporate during this time, which tends to be the hottest time of the day. Gardeners should avoid working in their gardens during these hours as well. Garden in the early morning hours when the sun is not burning as hot or in late afternoon or early evening hours when temperatures are less threatening.

LESS ENERGY WHEN THE WEATHER WARMS Invest in ceiling fans, which can move air through the home. This will help prevent pockets of hot air in certain spaces. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, even in homes with air conditioning, ceiling fans enable homeowners to raise the thermostats on their AC units by about 4 F with no reduction in comfort. Attic fans can draw heat out of a home through vents, also helping to reduce indoor air temperatures. These devices can reduce reliance on air conditioners, especially on moderate days or cool nights.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A VETERINARY DENTAL CLEANING

Anesthesia: One of the main differences between a dental cleaning for a person and one for a pet is the use of anesthesia. According to Kulshan Veterinary Hospital, pets do not willingly open their mouths to give veterinary dentists access to perform cleanings. Anesthesia ensures that the animal will remain still and the vet can remove any plaque and tartar that has built up. If a tooth needs to be extracted, sedation ensures that will go smoothly.

Penny Saver

I have been with my Mommy and Daddy since I was 6 weeks old. They rescued me from a deserted barn and they found homes for my 4 brothers and sisters. One of my most special times is playing ‘tag’ with my puppy buddy Emily! After a day of play, we always take a nap together in the front picture window! We love the nice warn sun light that shines in on us. I spend a lot of my ‘window time’ watching the birds as they visit the bird feeder outside my window! I have a chipmunk buddy who taps on the window from time to time! Oh...and flowers!! I’m a big lover of flowers!! The first thing I do every morning is ‘hug’ my flowers! And each night before bed-time, my favorite time is curling up on my Mommy’s lap by the fireplace.

Please Be Responsible

Making the world a better place, one step at a time

Thank you so much for sharing the story about our fearless leader, Brad Carlson. He's been integral to BSA 410 and is just an amazing human being overall. May we all strive to make our communities a better place and pass on our knowledge and expertise to the next generation, as Brad does and has!

So many people start not feeling good and automatically assume and tell others oh it's only a cold. Or it's only allergies. Many hear those words all the time. You don't know that for sure because Covid symptoms presents as a cold or allergies in some. Please respect others and test yourself as not to spread it to others. It only takes a few minutes. Some people really trying to protect themselves can get very sick. Please be responsible. One can easily spread it to six or seven people, and those six or seven people can spread it to another six or seven people, and so on. Some people can still pass away from Covid if they're sick enough.

Stop the Stink

Cigarette smokers, please don’t stand near entrances to stores or businesses. The smoke is carcinogenic and the wind carries it. And please don’t toss the butts on the ground and walk away. Smoke in your vehicle or your own home. Tossing them out your windows is disgusting, plus it’s littering.

HOW TO SUPPORT STUDENTS INTERESTED IN THE ARTS

Research local performing arts schools. Children who exhibit an especially strong interest in the arts may benefit from enrolling in a school that specializes in performing arts. Such schools may be open to kids as young as five and extend all the way through high school. Some performing arts schools require prospective students to audition or apply. Arts high schools still offer instruction in core academic subjects, but parents should explore each school’s curriculum before deciding if a given school is right for their children.

* Stop runs in hose or tights by painting the bottom of the run with clear nail polish. Let dry and repeat. Do this while wearing them, and gently unstick from the skin. It works better when they are stretched as they will be worn, and you don't risk attaching it to the other side of the tights.

High Creatinine and GFR Levels Signify Severe Kidney Damage

DEAR DR. ROACH: Last summer, a city policeman came to my door. My doctor had been unable to contact me with the results of a recent blood test and called the police. The policeman handed me a card with the results written on it. My creatinine level was 4.1, and my glomerular filtration rate (GFR) was 14. He said the numbers indicated that my kidneys were failing and that I should go to the emergency room immediately. Except for swelling in one ankle, I had no symptoms.

During a day and a half in the hospital, I lost 14 pounds of fluid after the insertion of a catheter. Within two weeks, my creatinine level was measured at 2.1. After a few months of wearing the catheter, my prostate was “trimmed back” (my words, not the doctor’s) using a procedure called a “TURP.” I am back to normal. What is a TURP, and how routine is it? Are there any long-term negative effects? How close did I come to kidney failure? -- T.J.R.

ANSWER: Your problem was obstruction of urine flow due to an enlarged prostate. The urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body) goes right through the middle of the prostate, and an enlarged prostate can block flow partially or completely. This is a very common problem. Sometimes the urine flow stops entirely, but this doesn’t have to happen in order for kidney damage to occur. It’s the increased pressure in the bladder that causes damage. Creatinine is an end product of protein metabolism, and since it is removed by the kidney, it’s a good indicator of kidney function. The higher the creatinine level, the worse the kidney function. The creatinine level (along with age and sex) are used to estimate the GFR, a direct statement of a person’s kidney function.

A (stable) GFR of less than 15 is considered stage 5 kidney failure, which usually means that dialysis will be necessary to preserve life. Note that creatinine itself isn’t the problem; it’s a marker for the fact that the kidney can’t remove all the other waste products, which will then build up and make a person very ill.

When a person with urinary obstruction develops a creatinine level over 6, it’s likely that they will have permanent kidney damage, but I have seen people with higher levels recover and some with lower levels experience permanent kidney function loss. My guess is that you were only a few days away from having permanent damage. A trans-urethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a traditional treatment for an enlarged prostate. Although newer treatments are often used in situations where there is plenty of time to spare, a TURP is a routine treatment for the type of obstruction you had. There are possible long-term side effects from a TURP, such as erectile dysfunction, but those are usually noticed immediately after surgery and often get better over time.

Finally, a plea: Make sure that your doctor has your up-to-date contact information, including your emergency contacts. We physicians are very grateful to have the police available for emergencies, but would rather not have to use them. I try to remind my resident physicians to be sure that we have a working contact number any time we order a test, but it’s best if both the patient and physician have it on their lists. Even routine tests can occasionally come back with critical results.

TAKE A COURSE IN DORM SAFETY

College students have a few different living options at their disposal, but many opt for dormitory living, as it is one of the more convenient and popular boarding options, particularly for out-of-town students. Thousands of post-secondary students pack up their belongings and move away from home in the pursuit of an education, and parents want to do what they can to ensure their college-aged kids are safe.

For many students, college represents the first time they will live anywhere other than the homes they grew up in. Dorm life can be an exciting adventure, but it can also be one that may open new college students up to inherently risky situations.

While students should look forward to fun and excitement at school, it’s also important for them to be prepared for what lies ahead at college and in dorm life - and to take the proper safety precautions. Use common sense and trust your instincts with regard to dorm safety. Make college memories good ones by emphasizing caution.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Local vendors will be familiar with the area and possibly even the location where the wedding will be held. That can help couples avoid having to give directions, discuss venue protocols, and handle other tasks that must be worked out with non-local vendors. For example, local photographers familiar with a particular venue will know all of the best places to get shots, and some vendors may have preexisting relationships with venue representatives that could ensure wedding day operations go smoothly.

EXPLORE WORK WITH CONFIDENCE

(NAPSI)—With unemployment at a 50-year low, companies are eager to draw talent from a diverse pool of job seekers, and organizations have recognized the inherent value in a diverse workforce that includes qualified employees with disabilities. Yet, for many who rely on Social Security disability benefits for income and Medicare or Medicaid, work seems like a gamble. What most people don’t know is that there are free services and supports available for those who qualify.

Social Security’s Ticket to Work (Ticket) program and other Work Incentives can help take the guesswork out of finding or returning to work. More than 20 Work Incentives are designed to help individuals who receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to a disability, transition to the workplace without immediately losing those benefits. Because each person’s circumstances are different, job seekers are encouraged to consult a certified Benefits Counselor, who can help them make informed decisions about employment and benefits.

Through the Ticket program, people ages 18 through 64 who receive SSDI or SSI can receive free job-related services and supports. Whether they work with their state’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) agency or with authorized service providers called Employment Networks (EN), people can find the resources they need to prepare for, find and maintain employment.

For individuals such as Shirley, this can mean exploring work with confidence. When Shirley was diagnosed with narcolepsy, her doctors advised her stop working.

“It was distressing to lose that sense of control over my life,” she recalls. “…[and] stressful making ends meet on an SSDI check.”

It took several years to find effective treatment, but Shirley was determined to regain her well-being and that feeling of self-determination she had lost. “Narcolepsy is not something that just goes away,” she says. “But I’ve learned to make adjustments… [and] work around the disability.”

Once she felt ready, Shirley attended a job fair where she learned about the Ticket program and connected with an EN. With their help and encouragement, Shirley found work in her State’s General Services Administration, where she helps ensure small businesses are represented on state contracts.

“I’m grateful for the help I received through Ticket to Work,” she reflects. “It feels wonderful to have my independence back! I feel like I can rely on myself again.”

To learn more, call the Ticket to Work Help Line at 1-866-968-7842 or 1-866-833-2967 (TTY). Or visit www.choosework.ssa.gov.

PAW’S CORNER

Flying with a Pet

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My family is taking a vacation to Orlando in three months, and we want to take our Bichon Frise, “Arabelle,” with us. She is a small-medium size dog. Can we take her aboard the plane as an emotional support animal, or do we have to pay? -- Carol in Minneapolis

DEAR CAROLE: You’ll have to pay for Arabelle to accompany you on the aircra , and I recommend you book as soon as possible. Airlines offer limited space for small and medium size pets to ride in the passenger cabin with you.

Since a 2020 ruling by the Department of Transportation, only trained dogs that perform specific tasks to aid a person with a disability can be classified as service dogs. Most airlines no longer allow emotional support animals, as they are not considered service animals.

Here are some important tips for traveling by air with your pet:

-- Book as early as possible to reserve a space for your pet to travel in the cabin.

-- Expect to pay between $100 and $200 for pet accommodation on your flight.

-- Your pet must be well-behaved and responsive to your commands; cabin crew can ask you to deplane if your pet does not behave.

-- Smaller pets should be kept in a carrier. ey should be able to stand, turn around and lie down inside the carrier.

- Visit the veterinarian for a pre-travel checkup, and make sure your pet is up to date with all vaccinations, especially rabies. Airlines won’t allow unvaccinated pets to fly.

-- Exercise and feed your pet before leaving for the airport.

-- Arrive early. Running late can stress you and your pet.

What Expecting Parents Can Do To Make Their Homes Safer

• Conceal cables and cords. Cable and cord concealers are inexpensive and easily installed. Often used to cover cords hanging down from mounted televisions, concealers also can be used to hide cords coming from computers, lamps and other items that can pose a threat to young children.

• Avoid hand-me-down kids’ furniture. The older a piece of furniture is, the less likely it is that the item will meet current safety guidelines. Some parents may be tempted to let their children sleep in the same crib they slept in as kids decades ago, but it’s safer to eschew nostalgia in favor of products that meet the latest safety standards.

• Get rid of potential choking hazards. Prior to bringing their babies home, expecting parents can remove all small trinkets and other items that curious children may want to put in their mouths. When buying toys for kids, read the packaging to make sure each item is safe for babies and avoid buying or accepting any gifts with small pieces.

• Store all medicines on high shelves behind cabinet doors. Vitamins and medicines should be stored on high shelves behind cabinet doors. If kids can see them, they’ll likely try to grab them. Hiding medicines on high shelves behind closed cabinet doors reduces the risk that kids will be poisoned and suffer a fallrelated injury.

August 3, 2024 is National Disc Golf Day!

The 1920s are the earliest known games, allegedly. A group of children at Bladworth Elementary School in Saskatchewan, Canada are reportedly the first ones to play a version of disc golf. In 1965 George Sappenfield is on break from Fresno State University and working as a recreation counselor when an idea hits him as he plays golf — he wonders if the kids in his playground would like to play golf with Frisbees, and he is right. The First O cial Disc Golf Course was built in 1975. American toy inventor Ed Headrick installs the first o cial course at Oak Grove Park in Pasadena, Los Angeles County, California — the targets are simply permanent poles. Disc Golf gains mainstream attention in 2015. Disc golf appears on ESPN's Top 10 Plays on SportsCenter, taking this sport into mainstream media, too.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Make an effort to reduce stress. Stress produces a host of negative side effects, some of which can indirectly affect appearance. Some people dealing with stress end up suffering from insomnia, which can contribute to bags under the eyes. Stress also can adversely affect hydration of the skin, contributing to dry skin. Stress also can contribute to hormonal imbalances that lead to skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. If stress is a problem, make a concerted effort to reduce it, even working with a physician to reduce stress when necessary.

Monks, Bread, and Divine Mercy: The Spirtual and Culinary Legacy of the Abbey of the Genesee

The Abbey of the Genesee spans a 570-acre plot along the Genesee River in Piffard, NY and is home to a Roman Catholic community of contemplative monks belonging to the worldwide Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (O.C.S.O.), commonly known as Trappists. Manual work is an integral part of Trappist life, and each monastic community supports itself by the work of its hands. e bakery in Piffard supports the monastery’s primary mission to pray for the world.

e monks of the Abbey of the Genesee have been baking Monks’ Bread since 1953, soon a er the first monks arrived from Kentucky. One of Genesee’s first monks, Br Sylvester, a cook in the US Navy, had baked as many as 400 loaves at a time for his shipmates, so he continued to bake bread for his brothers at Genesee. e monks shared loaves with guests and local tradesmen who volunteered time and expertise to construct the Abbey’s first buildings. Everyone loved the bread and word spread. Monks soon sold bread at local parishes on Sunday mornings and stores asked to sell the famous bread. What started in the monastery’s kitchen soon became a state-of-the-art bakery, baking and selling bread far and wide.

In 2015, Monks’ Specialty Bakery, featuring biscotti, cheese crisps, and fruit & nut bars, allowed older monks no longer able to serve in the physically demanding traditional bread bakery to continue to provide service in a slowerpaced bakery alongside their brother monks. e

Abbey’s Vocation Director, Fr. Isaac Slater, with the Abbey for 24 years, says the Abbey of the Genesee includes monks from across the world with diverse backgrounds, education, and personalities. Fr. Isaac says the common thread among all is grace: “Something – guilt, mortality, some root disillusionment or loss – leads us to see our own weakness in a startling new way, and in the same moment of stark and bitter truth, we discover we are truly, unconditionally loved and accepted as we are.”

To keep alive those moments of love, divine mercy, and communion, Cistercian monks keep a “set program and schedule,” rising early for vigils, fasting, silence, solitary prayer, practicing a fraternal life in poverty, and absorption in the scriptures. Fr. Isaac says, “All of these are meant to keep alive and cultivate the memory of God’s touch in our lives, to keep us plugged in to our deepest heart’s desire.”

Fr. Isaac describes this monastic life as “like a trellis [that] allows the sprawling tangle of [one’s] inner life to reach up and out into full articulation. It’s something like living inside a sonnet: all the compression and limits of the form paradoxically serve a feeling of release and freedom.” While solitary, Fr. Isaac says the monastic life is also “intensely social” with daily opportunities to care for elderly brothers, work to support the community, and extend hospitality to the many guests and retreatants who visit. He explains, “ e atmosphere of leisure and peace, the surroundings and regular practices all serve

to keep one true to his deepest heart’s desire: to grow in union with the Lord Jesus and to radiate His love and mercy to a suffering world.”

Fr. Isaac explains his call to vocation: “When I considered the immense injustice and misery in the world, and that I had only one life to spend, the contemplative life, which relies so totally on divine strength and requires from me only the surrender of my weakness, seemed to make the best contribution.” At his first retreat at a Cistercian monastery, Fr. Isaac felt “deeply confirmed and consoled by these words of St. Isaac of Nineveh: ‘One who knows his weakness is greater than he who sees the angels… e solitary and repentant follower of Christ is greater than he who enjoys popular favor in the churches.’”

Fr. Isaac says he recognized his weaknesses, and he knew that to embrace the gospel fully, he needed a strong support system to keep him focused. He found that vocation in Cistercian monastic life at the end of 1999. Since then, he says, “It’s proved a more challenging, healing, and beautiful life than I could have hoped for, one that has set me free. At the center there is a deep intimacy with the Lord, the chance to live in closeness to Him that would be more difficult in other ways of life.”

e Abbey of the Genesee stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith, community, and the simplicity of a life dedicated to prayer and service. From the fragrant loaves of Monks’ Bread to the serene rhythm of monastic life, the Abbey offers a unique glimpseintoaworldwherethedivineandtheeverydaycoexistinharmony. GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS

Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop time-saving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.
