HOW TO INVOLVE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE IN AGRICULTURE
Emphasize technological advancements in the field. Modern young people are growing up with technology all around them, but few may be aware of the vital role technology plays in the agricultural sector. Young people’s ears may perk up upon hearing terms like “robotics” technologies are now a big part of life on the farm. Recognition of that may compel more young people to pursue careers in agriculture.

* The maddening but addictive Rubik’s Cube was created by accident. Professor of architecture Erno Rubik built a twistable box with colorful rows of labels on each side in an attempt to design blocks that could move without collapsing the entire structure. After rotating a few rows and mixing up the colors, the real challenge began: realigning the hues! It took Rubik about a month to restore his cube to its original condition.
EARLY TREATMENT KEY TO MANAGING SEASONAL DISEASES IN CATTLE
(NAPSI) — Two of the more common production-impacting health issues cattlemen see in their herds this time of year are foot rot and pinkeye. Left untreated, each can lead to more serious, chronic health problems.
Foot rot, pinkeye and other common cattle ailments are highly dependent on pasture, weather and other conditions. Foot rot is more problematic when cattle are kept in wet, muddy and manure-heavy lots. Caused by the Fusobacterium Necrophorum bacteria, symptoms include swelling and inflammation between the toes, resulting in lameness and reluctance to walk.
Pinkeye is a highly infectious eye condition that can affect cattle of all ages, often on tall-grass pastures and in environmental situations that can irritate the eye. Flies are a major irritant and vector for the disease, so controlling them and other sources of irritant is critical. Delayed treatment of pinkeye can result in loss of the eye, reduced performance and a less marketable animal.
Fortunately, with timely surveillance and treatment, these infections, along with other diseases, can be easily and cost-effectively managed by producers with a non-prescription injectable product such as Noromycin 300 LA, a highly concentrated, lowdose, fast-acting formulation of oxytetracycline. Effectively used by cattlemen for many years, it is widely available through most farm and veterinary supply companies.

DEPRESSION COMMON BUT TREATABLE
It’s normal to experience feelings of sadness and grief from time to time. But when these feelings are prolonged or interfere with daily life, they may be symptomatic of depression.
Depression can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or economic status. The National Institute of Mental Health says around 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression. Understanding depression can help those dealing with the disorder.

Protect Your Mobile Devices - and Your Identity (Family Features) Mobile devices have become an indispensable tool for many people - and the thought of losing one of those devices, or having it stolen, is disconcerting, to say the least. But it happens every day. It’s estimated that lost or stolen phones alone could cost U.S. users $30 billion in 2012.
When a phone or tablet goes missing, so does a lot of personal information. And that can lead to more than just some inconvenience - it can lead to a stolen identity.
The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year. While identity thieves still resort to old-fashioned methods of information gathering, like going through trash and stealing wallets and purses, they can also get the personal information you store on your mobile device.
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat together the butter and sugar on low speed until light and fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Scrape down the sides of the bowl with a spatula, then add the roasted bananas, sour cream and vanilla. Beat until incorporated.
With the mixer running on low speed, spoon in the flour mixture and mix until just combined. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Sprinkle evenly with the pecan topping. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean with a few crumbs attached. Let cool for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.

DID YOU KNOW? A landmark study conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom discovered a notable link between low to moderate alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk.According to the Million Women Study, every 10 grams (roughly 0.35 ounces) of alcohol a woman consumed per day was associated with a 12 percent increase in her risk for breast cancer. The Million Women Study focused on various areas of women’s health but included 28,000 women who had breast cancer. In addition, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that more than 100 epidemiologic studies have examined a potential association between alcohol consumption and the risk for breast cancer, consistently finding that risk for the disease increases as alcohol intake increases.

DVT Patient Switches to Aspirin With Good Results
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 81-year-old female who has been on Xarelto for years due to deep vein thrombosis (DVT). I also have an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter. I read that low-dose aspirin (325 mg) is just as effective in preventing clots in the legs as Xarelto, which is very expensive. My doctor advises against changing to aspirin, but won’t give me an explanation as to why. I switched anyway, and the redness in my foot disappeared. After one month of taking 325 mg of coated aspirin daily, I have no symptoms and actually feel better. What are your thoughts? -- A.B.
ANSWER: Although aspirin is better than nothing, it has been proven to be less effective than Xarelto and similar medicines in people who are at risk for blood clots. In a yearlong trial comparing the two, recurrences of DVT (a blood clot in the deep veins of the leg) occurred in just over 1% of people taking Xarelto and in 4.4% of people taking aspirin. (This study used low-dose aspirin -- 100 mg -- rather than the full-dose of 325 mg that you are taking.) The risk of bleeding was about the same among the aspirin group and the Xarelto group.
Aspirin is an anti-inflammatory, which may be why the redness in your foot disappeared. I doubt it had anything to do with a blood clot.
For people at a high risk, I recommend against changing from a more-effective medicine like Xarelto to aspirin. In your case, you are protected against a blood clot in the lung by your filter, which is designed to catch any clot before it can get to the lung. Unfortunately, the IVC filter slightly increases the risk of a recurrence of a blood clot in the legs, so it’s important to keep taking medication to reduce your risk.
Given the serious nature of a blood clot, I can’t recommend disregarding your doctor’s advice, although you deserve a thorough explanation from your doctor. If the main issue for your wanting to change medications is the expense, you might ask your doctor if there are lessexpensive alternatives that would still be as effective as Xarelto. The manufacturer also offers a program to help with expenses.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING
LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Local vendors will be familiar with the area and possibly even the location where the wedding will be held. That can help couples avoid having to give directions, discuss venue protocols, and handle other tasks that must be worked out with non-local vendors. For example, local photographers familiar with a particular venue will know all of the best places to get shots, and some vendors may have preexisting relationships with venue representatives that could ensure wedding day operations go smoothly.

TRICKS TO KEEP FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS FRESH
Make fresh cuts in stems: Think back to the last time you purchased a fresh Christmas tree. What is the key to ensuring it gets enough water while on display? You guessed it: making a fresh cut in the trunk of the tree. The same concept applies to floral arrangements. Use a sharp scissor or pruning shears to cut about one inch from the bottom of each stem at a 45-degree angle. Continue this process every three days or so. The 45-degree angle prevents the stem from squishing during the cut and enables it to absorb more water.

The flower most commonly associated with funeral services in the popular mind is the lily. Lilies are often interpreted as a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the departed. A white stargazer lily symbolizes sympathy and any type of white lily expresses majesty and purity.

TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Make an effort to reduce stress. Stress produces a host of negative side effects, some of which can indirectly affect appearance. Some people dealing with stress end up suffering from insomnia, which can contribute to bags under the eyes. Stress also can adversely affect hydration of the skin, contributing to dry skin. Stress also can contribute to hormonal imbalances that lead to skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis and eczema. If stress is a problem, make a concerted effort to reduce it, even working with a physician to reduce stress when necessary.

In 1892, the French newspaper La Siècle printed a game that was akin to Sudoku in that each row and column had to contain all the designated numbers, but unlike Sudoku, it involved numerals higher than 9 and engaged solvers’ mathematical skills, not their logic center.
Flash forward to 1979. Circumstantial evidence points to Indiana architect Howard Garns publishing a puzzle of his own invention (at that time named “Number Place”) in Dell Magazine that would become the game we now know as Sudoku.
IT KEEPS OUR MINDS SHARP
Actively participating in things that exercise our brains, especially those that involve math, is a good way to keep our minds sharp. Sudoku can increase focus and concentration as well as alleviate depression. Studies also suggest that puzzles and word games help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. A Steady Hand in Rural Healthcare Donna Flaherty’s Journey with Geneseo Parish Outreach Center
BY SUZIE WELLS
ExecutiveDirectoroftheGeneseoParishOutreachCenter(GPOC) since 2017, Donna Flaherty, a dedicated physician’s assistant, has volunteered at the Center since 2004. Flaherty’s commitment to rural healthcare has shaped the lives of countless individuals across Livingston, Monroe, Genesee, and Steuben counties.
Flaherty’s journey into healthcare began long before she set foot in Geneseo. From a young age, she was inspired by the work of Dr. omas Dooley, a physician who documented his experiences in Vietnam and Laos. She laughs that she read every one of his books long ago, and these stories fueled her passion for becoming a rural medical provider.
“I always wanted to help those in rural areas who needed care,” she reminisces, her voice filled with the strength of someone who has lived her calling.
For over a decade, Flaherty balanced her professional career, including her role at Tri-County Family Medicine, with volunteer work at the newly-formed Parish Outreach Center. As time passed, her involvement at the Center grew, particularly a er she retired from full-time work.
“I had a real concern for people who couldn’t afford medical care,” she explains. “Not just those without insurance, but also those who couldn’t afford the extras—labs, dental care, OB services. It’s a big problem.” is concern became the foundation of her work at GPOC, where she has tirelessly advocated for accessible healthcare for all.
e Geneseo Parish Outreach Center was founded in 2004 when Linda Weaver, a registered nurse, recognized the need for free and charitable medical care in the area. Weaver served as Executive Director until 2017, when she passed the torch to Flaherty. Under Weaver’s and now Flaherty’s leadership, the Center has flourished, providing a wide range of services through an all-volunteer staff that includes doctors, nurses, physician assistants, and office support.
A unique aspect of GPOC is its commitment to serving diverse populations, including migrant farm workers and the Amish community. Flaherty, who has lived in the area since 1992 (a er moving around a lot for her husband’s Air Force career), liaises between these communities and various charities in Monroe County and the Finger Lakes, ensuring that even those without formal medical networks receive care they need.
e Outreach Center is a hub of activity, open four mornings a week with evening and weekend hours to accommodate community needs. Services range from primary and pediatric care to women’s health, medication assistance, and health education. e Center supports and empowers the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing of uninsured and underserved individuals, providing care both on-site and through referrals to other health and social service agencies. Since 2019, the GPOC even partners with Foodlink as an emergency food pantry, providing food regardless of borders.
Flaherty’s primary message to the community is: “We’re here. If you cannot afford your medication, or you are new to the area, you need help getting medical insurance, if you can’t afford labs, or need to see a specialist, we’re here for you.”
Flaherty is quick to credit the dedication of the Center’s all-volunteer staff of 168, including 28 medical providers, 55 nurses, and 83 nonmedical volunteers such as office staff, food pantry volunteers, and IT support staff. She says, “Our volunteers are so dedicated, coming not just now and then, but every single week, bringing their skills from whatever background they have. ey are SO great.” For example, Flaherty gives a shout-out to the Center’s Medical Director, Dr. Ayesha Tasaddaq of Tri-County Family Medicine in Dansville and Dr. Chris Stewart, a retired internist, who serves adult patients at the Center. At
the GPOC, she says, all patients, pediatric to geriatric, receive incredible care thanks to the amazing volunteers.
e Outreach Center’s impact on the community is evident in the services it provides and the recognition it receives. In 2008, GPOC received the TRIAD Community Service Award by the NYS Assembly, and in 2023, GPOC received gold member status by the National Association of Free and Charitable Clinics.
August 24th, the Center offered its annual Health and Wellness Fair, providing free podiatry services (thank you, Dr. Andrew Merkel of Geneseo), and free eye care through Flaum Eye Institute, as well as blood pressure checks, BMI analysis, and information on local health services.
As the Geneseo Parish Outreach Center approaches its 20th anniversary on September 4th, Flaherty reflects on the journey. “We’re going strong, probably stronger than back then,” she says, and it’s all thanks to the incredible volunteers who continue to be the heart of its mission, ensuring everyone who needs help receives it.
e Center will celebrate this milestone with an Open House on September 7, 2024, inviting the community to meet the volunteers and learn more about the vital work being done. For more information, visit gpocenter.org.

PROTECT NATURAL BEE HABITATS
Not all bees build the wax or paper structures associated with traditional beehives. Those hives may not be readily visible even for bees that do build them. Wood-nesting bees can nest in twigs or dead trees. Bees may nest underground or use the burrows abandoned by small rodents. Before excavating or disturbing more remote areas of the yard, check to see if it is a habitat for bees. Leave some natural areas of the landscape untouched and do not remove twigs, mounds of dirt and native flowers to attract more bees.

INFESTING A LAWN
Cutworms: The lawn care experts at Scotts® note that cutworms are moth larvae that hide in the thatch layer of a lawn during the day before emerging at night to feed on grass blades. Patches of brown grass between one and two inches in width is a sign of cutworm infestation. Homeowners who notice a growing number of birds pecking away in their lawns may have a cutworm infestation, which can be confirmed by peeling up a section of damaged grass and looking for cutworms, which are brown, gray or black and tend to be around two inches long.
BENEFITS OF HIRING PROFESSIONAL
Inspiration: One oft-overlooked benefit of working with professional contractors is the likelihood that they can draw up ideas for projects that homeowners might otherwise never have thought up on their own. Homeowners without specific ideas in mind can ask contractors to come up with various scenarios before committing to a particular one. Veteran contractors can draw on years of experience to create designs that DIYers might be incapable of coming up with and/or incapable of seeing through to completion.

EXPLORING SOLAR ELECTRICITY
Solar panels are seen more and more on roofs of residential homes and even some businesses. Due in part to more aggressive marketing by solar energy companies, as well as greater awareness by customers, solar energy has become increasingly popular in recent years.
The Solar Energy Industries Association® reports that solar energy in the United States is booming. The association offers that, since the passage of The Solar Investment Tax Credit in 2006, solar has experienced a compound annual growth rate of more than 60 percent.
While many might assume that environmental preservation is the driving force behind the growing popularity of solar energy, it’s actually the financial benefits of solar energy that are leading the way. One Block Off the Grid polled nearly 200 solar homeowners to learn more about their motivations for going solar. Roughly 75 percent would not have gone solar if there was no economic benefit to doing so. A number of people who have switched to solar say they are getting a high rate of return on the investment. The average electricity bill a person saw prior to solar energy hovered around $177 a month. After the conversion, bills were now as low as $55.

Avoid idling. Idling was once advised to warm up vehicles so they did not stall once they leave the driveway and hit the open road. However, that stalling occurred when cold carburetorscouldnotgettheappropriatemixof airandfuelintheengine.Butcarburetors have long since been replaced by electronic fuel injection systems, negating the need to warm up a vehicle to avoid stalling. Fight Back Against Fleas
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My apartment has been infested with fleas all summer! I’m so frustrated. My two cats are suffering from hot spots and patchy fur because of the flea bites, and I’ve constantly got bites all over my legs. I don’t want to give my cats flea medicine because I heard it is dangerous to their health. What can I do to get rid of these fleas? -- Cara J. in Macon, Georgia
DEAR CARA: You’re going to have to plan an all-out assault on the flea infestation, and do it as soon as possible.
Talk to your veterinarian about the health risks and benefits of various flea and tick treatments. Ticks can give your cats heartworm and tapeworm. Your cats’ health is at greater risk right now from not doing anything than they would be from an effective treatment.
Next, get rid of the fleas and their eggs in your house with a complete cleaning and treatment. Take down the curtains and wash and dry them. Wash all your bedding and clothes. Dust from ceiling to floor. Vacuum the carpets thoroughly. Wash all mats and put out in the sun to dry. Clean every corner of the apartment. Clean fabric furniture with a steam cleaner. Flip the sofa and vacuum up all the dust bunnies and dirt.
Finally, with the cats sequestered in a safe room, treat the carpet to kill remaining fleas and their eggs. You can use a direct spray or an insecticide that is sprinkled into the carpet and vacuumed up. is all-out assault will nearly wipe out the fleas in your home. But they can (and will) come back. To keep them on the retreat, vacuum twice a week, wash your cats’ bedding weekly, and make sure the cats get their flea/tick/heartworm medication on schedule.

KUDOS TO FAIRPORT FIREMEN!
We recently had our [presidential candidate] sign stolen from our yard. If I recall, the Constitution says we have free speech, not if it only pertains to your view. We have had presidents that I did not care for, but gave the office the respect it deserved. Whatever happened to the saying to agree to disagree? Please, less hate and more kindness, understanding and love.
Rude and Dangerous Drivers
Saturday eve at 9PM, my sister and I were worried when we didn’t see a clearly labeled ‘shuttle stop’ at the Fairport Music fest. We hailed 2 delightful young men in a Jeep type vehicle parked by the Fest entrance and told them of our concern. One ran down the street to flag the shuttle he saw coming to ensure the driver didn’t miss us on the curb. These men were SO kind, friendly and eager to help 2 seniors in need! I am sorry I didn’t get their names for a personal thanks.
When my car suddenly became undrivable in the middle of the right lane on [local road] across from [local plaza] late Friday afternoon, I did my best to get as far onto the shoulder as possible. I turned my 4-ways flashers on, called my husband, and called 911 to report my car in the road because I was afraid of causing an accident. To the woman who slowed while driving down the far lane on the other side of the road, thank you for asking if I needed help. To everyone else, and especially those on my side of the road who didn’t slow down or stop and worse yet, sped up to swerve into the next lane even though you could so easily have caused an actual accident, shame on you. I hope you never find yourself in a similar situation one day. And to the police officer who asked if I’d run out of gas...since my car was still running, no I did not. The real cause: a snapped drive axle.
Every Day in September SURF AND TURF SPECIAL
Our Famous Rib and Pot Dinner
$35
10 ounce Prime Rib with a 4 ounce Lobster Pot Dinner includes choice of potato, fresh garden salad, homemade rolls, and specialty bread.
*Make it a “Double Surf” by adding on a 4 ounce Lobster Tail for only $10.
5 ounces shiitake mushrooms, stems removed and finely chopped
1 tablespoon roasted sesame oil
1 pound, 2 ounces cooked, shredded beef short ribs
11 ounces cabbage kimchi, drained and finely chopped
3 1/2 ounces spring onions, finely chopped
3 ounces pickled jalapeños, finely chopped
1 pound, 2 ounces mature cheddar cheese, grated
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
To serve:
Silgochu (dried chilli threads)
1 spring onion, julienned and soaked in ice water until curled, then drained Sriracha
For the filling, first sauté the mushrooms in the sesame oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium-low heat until just softened. Remove from the heat and set aside. In a large bowl, combine the rest of the filling ingredients with the mushrooms. Mix together using your hands, really breaking up the short rib meat to make a uniform texture.
For the dumplings, line a couple of baking sheets with parchment and set aside. Fill a small bowl with water. Unwrap the wonton wrappers and cover lightly with a piece of clingfilm to keep them moist. Lay a wrapper on a clean work surface and put 1 ounce of the meat filling in the center. Dip a forefinger into the water and run it along the edges of the wrapper to moisten the surface. Now bring the open edges to the center, and pinch where the edges meet each other, creating four seams in a cross shape. Set aside and cover with clingfilm or a damp tea towel while you shape the rest. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling, making sure the dumplings are not touching on the baking sheets.
To a medium saucepan, add the vegetable oil and heat to 340 F (170 C). Working in batches, place the dumplings on their sides in the pan in a single layer without crowding. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until golden brown. Transfer the fried dumplings to a wire rack or kitchen paper-lined plate to drain. Repeat with the remaining dumplings. If you don’t plan on cooking them straight away, you can freeze them on the baking sheets, then bag them up and store in the freezer.
Top with some of the silgochu and curly spring onion and serve immediately with the sriracha.

According to a recent Business Insider article, business leaders disagree on the dynamic role of personal and professional time. How would you define work-life balance today?
14.3% Life is more like a portfolio ~ TIAA CEO
14.3% Work-life harmony, aligning “deep interests” with work. ~ Microsoft CEO
21.4 Circular - Being content at home leads to work productivity, and vice versa ~ Amazon CEO

(Family Features) Here are three things you can do to help protect your mobile devices and your identity: Password protect your device. A recent study by Javelin Strategy and Research found that even though many smartphones are being used to handle sensitive financial information, only 33 percent of smartphone owners password-protect their devices. If your phone falls into the wrong hands, you could make it very easy for someone to access your personal information and steal your identity.
Review your social network privacy settings. It’s not just advertisers taking advantage of the personal information you include on your social network sites. As the use of social networking continues to increase, it’s expected that the use of malware will rise, too. Cybercriminals are always looking for ways to steal information and money. So you need to review your privacy settings frequently, be careful of what apps you install, and never “friend” someone you don’t know.
Consider getting extra protection. There are a growing number of tools available to help you monitor and protect your identity as well as restore your name and credit, should your identity get stolen. For example, Mobile Rhino is a specialty insurance program that not only insures your device, but also offers an Identity Monitoring Service that alerts you of any changes that could indicate someone else is using your information.

Here’s A Tip
BYLINE: By JoAnn Derson
* To fix a hole in drywall that requires a healthy helping of joint compound, you can cut a piece of screen slightly bigger than the hole and tack it to the inside of the drywall. You also can wad up a piece of aluminum foil and shove it in the hole, pressing it in a bit to create a recess for the compound. e foil will keep the compound at the site of the hole, allowing it to set up instead of fall down. * "I recently did a little work on my car, and a erward I washed and waxed it. My tools got pretty grimy, so I cleaned them too. Since I had the wax out, I used it on several of them to keep them from rusting in storage." -via email

Have a nice display. First impressions can mean a lot. Buyers are more apt to visit neat, well-laid-out sales than those that are just a bunch of boxes that have to be dug through.
Bereasonablewhenpricingitems. Be objective in your assessment of your things. What has value to you may not have as much value to someone else. Pricing items at one-third of their initial cost is a good starting point. This leaves room for negotiation.

DID YOU KNOW?
In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).

DID YOU KNOW?
Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, andretirementagecanarrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.
