The Greater Rochester and Finger Lakes area relies on governmental policies that support local employers who create good paying jobs, provide critical domestic supplies and whose operations support other businesses and local governments. Current State policies force municipalities to honor the lowest bid, resulting in contracts awarded to foreign rock salt companies. In many cases, the competing bids can be as close as a few cents per ton. More and more, foreign rock salt companies have moved to undercut the domestically sourced market, importing product from sources having substandard or non-existent environmental, health, safety and workforce standards from places like Chile and Egypt. It is not a level playing eld for American salt mining companies. Salt mining is a generational vocation for many people living in Western and Central New York. Salt mining has provided a prosperous living for hundreds of New York State miners, truck drivers, and railroad workers. It has been a major economic driver in the State for decades. is is now being threatened by foreign importers. At the moment, Governor Kathy Hochul has the opportunity to approve new legislation designed to protect the jobs of American miners here in her own State. is year, legislation entitled the “Buy American Rock Salt Act,” sponsored by Assemblyman Harry Bronson (D-Rochester) and State Senator Tim Kennedy (D-Bu alo) passed both houses and currently awaits Gubernatorial approval. With co-sponsorship from Assemblywoman Marjorie Byrnes (R) and State Senator Patrick Gallivan (R), the Act passed with overwhelming bipartisan support. Simply put, the legislation empowers the municipality by providing the option to choose rock salt mined in the United States, eliminating the requirement that municipalities must go with the lowest bid. To be clear, the legislation does not prohibit foreign suppliers from importing rock salt, or limit their ability to bid the market in any way. ere is not a tari on imported salt, or percentage preference for American mined rock salt. What the legislation does do however, is provide the municipality the right to choose salt that is mined in the United States of America.

It’s called polypharmacy, and it means that we’re taking multiple prescription drugs. We might be seeing more than one doctor for a condition and be given a prescription by one doctor and another by a di erent doctor with instruction to keep taking it until the next visit. We might be on a pharmacy auto-re ll program that sends us drugs, which we dutifully take. We might see a doctor with a subpar medical assistant who blithely renews all our prescriptions without asking. e so ware at the pharmacy’s computer might not be updated or might not even be new enough to pick up drug contraindications and ash an alert on the screen. We need to take charge! When you go for a doctor visit, take all your drugs with you in a bag, including any vitamins and over-the-counter drugs you picked up along the way. Line them up on the desk and ask the doctor (not a nurse) to verify that you should be taking all of them. Remember that when a health care provider treats you, it’s part of their job. At the end of the day, they go home. And at the end of the day, you live with the results of what they either do or don’t do.

Taking sunburn for granted can be a big mistake. Many people wouldn’t risk burns from a hot stove or open fire, but they won’t think twice about being unprotected under the very hot rays of the sun. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than one-third of adults and nearly 70 percent of children admit to suffering from sunburn within the past year. Depending on the intensity of the sun and the amount of time spent outside, sunburn can be a first- or second-degree burn. In first-degree burns, damage affects the topmost layer of skin. However, sunburn can even affect deeper layers and cause blistering in addition to redness and pain. Sunburn also can cause some irreparable damage that goes unseen. According to WebMD, ultraviolet light from the sun can alter DNA, prematurely aging skin or even contributing to skin cancers. It can take years before symptoms become noticeable. Therefore, it is best for people of all ages to exercise caution when spending time in the sun.

DON’T LET SUNBURN DERAIL SUMMER FUN

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband will be 83 in September and was recently diagnosed with an ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm measuring 4.8 cm. Five centimeters is when the doctors decide to do something. After hearing about the survival rate based on your recent column, along with your comment that “most people do not survive a rupture of the aorta,” I’m scared. Why do they wait until 5.0 or rupture? His doctor says to test again in six months and to just keep his blood pressure down. Shouldn’t he be careful about strenuous activities until repair? We can only wait at this point, it seems. -- C.G. ANSWER: The aorta, the largest blood vessel in the body, comes directly off the heart, ascends to form an arch, and then descends through the chest into the abdomen. The aorta is then considered in three divisions: the ascending thoracic aorta; the descending thoracic aorta; and the abdominal aorta. Aneurysms can occur in each of these areas, and each has slightly different criteria for when to intervene. In my most recent column, that was an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Most adults with an ascending TAA are recommended for surgical repair at a diameter of 5.5 cm. However, if the aneurysm is rapidly expanding, surgery may be considered earlier. If a person has a medical illness, making surgery very risky, surgeons may wait until the size exceeds 6 cm. The decision on when to operate requires judgement from an experienced surgeon and cardiologist. Air fresheners: These seemingly innocuous products may be doing more harm than good. Information published in a 2015 issue of The Journal of Toxicological Sciences linked air fresheners to volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. They also may contain ultra-ﬁne particles of formaldehyde and phenol. In addition, National Geographic’s The Green Guide states that many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat nasal passages and temporarily block one’s sense of smell. Many widely available air fresheners use phthalates, which are linked to hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. On top of this, I have a non-verbal child who has some special needs, but you couldn't tell this without knowing us. I have been so blown away by how, instead of judging us, so many people have reached out and asked if they could help push my cart or carry my groceries or just soothe my child. This is from a whole range of people, from a young boy with his mother to a retired grandma who said she just had extra time to help. Last Sunday, Aug. 28th, as I was leaving Wal-Mart I tripped in the parking lot and did a face plant. A beautiful person by the name of Debbie came to my aid. She summoned two Marines who were fundraising at the door of Wal-Mart and they came to my rescue, lifting me very quickly off the pavement and walking me into the store and ﬁnding me a chair. An ambulance was called, and I ended up in Noyes Hospital Emergency. A CAT scan and an EKG later, I was pronounced good to go with an icepack and a trip home with my son. I am so very grateful for these folks and their kindness to me. May God richly bless you all and special thanks to Debbie!

To the irresponsible pet owners that walk their dog on [local road] and seems to think it’s ok for your pet to do its business and for you to leave it there ﬁve times: We are seniors and have enough trouble getting around without having to clean up after you. Show some consideration!

I'm tired of being awakened several times during the night by teens roaming the streets, being loud and obnoxious, and causing mischief. No one needs to be out roaming between midnight and 5am. Where are your kids? If you want to allow them to stay up all night, then they can do it at your house and keep you awake. Some of us have to work and need a good night's sleep. If you say anything to these kids, you get sworn at, you're given the middle ﬁnger, or your property gets destroyed. There is no respect for other people. What is wrong with these parents and these kids? Teach your kids respect or keep them home. Rough Roads To the [local road] who has put off resurfacing this one road by the [local school] for years: Are you nuts? Did you go with the cheapest bid available? I swear it's like they repainted the awful road and left it that way! This [local town] stinks! Where is the money going?

Refrigerators that inform their owners when it’s time to buy more eggs and thermostats that learn homeowners’ heating and cooling preferences may once have seemed like futuristic ideas straight out of a sci-fi movie. However, such products are no longer a dream but a reality. The term “smart home” refers to a residence that has appliances, HVAC, lighting, entertainment systems, security, and many more devices that communicate with one another. Such devices can be controlled remotely, according to SmartHomeUSA, an automation product retailer. Proponents of smart home technology say features can help people save money on utilities and conserve natural resources, all the while providing peace of mind to Inhomeowners.2016,80 million smart home devices were delivered worldwide. 3. Prepare your friends and family. Seek support from your friends and family ahead of time. If you have a total of 10 friends and family members willing to help, and each of them volunteers only twice for ve hours each time, that is 100 hours already.

First, one must reach out to Habitat for Humanity (H4H) and put in an application. en, H4H will determine if that applicant is eligible. Eligibility is based on several factors including, but not limited to, income, suitability of the family’s current housing, current housing expenses, and the applicant’s credit score. At least one home visit is conducted to review the current housing situation. is initial process may require some tenacity. I was not eligible the rst year I applied; however, applicants are welcome to reapply each year. I worked on the areas, applied the following year, and was accepted. Each family must also have an H4H sponsor. I was blessed to have Joan Erbe act not only as my family’s sponsor but as my advocate, as well. Joan and her husband, Butch, both went above and beyond in every possible way to support my family in the process of building a house with H4H. In fact, going above and beyond seemed to be a way of life for all the H4H volunteers I encountered. ere are far too many to name, but all of them showed continual care and concern for the safety, well-being, and comfort of the family—mine—which would eventually reside in the home we were building. Besides a great deal of paperwork, the actual process of building your own home with H4H requires hard work: 100 labor hours from the applicant and 100 labor hours between your family and friends. Li ing materials,diggingdirt,nailingboards,paintingdrywall,andeverything in between is needed to create a new home. At the same time, there are exciting “perks,” as well: selecting the color of the home’s siding and shutters, selecting the home’s countertops and cabinets, and deciding on a few additional home design elements. It is challenging but applicants will also secure a mortgage for their H4H home with USDA Rural Development through an organization called Pathstone. Some of the advantages of this mortgage are that it typically has a low interest rate and that it is extended over a period of 33 years to create lower mortgage payments. A top priority of H4H is to reasonably ensure that new homeowners are able to handle the expenses of their new home, resulting in long-term stability for H4H families.

In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job.
