We have been completely overwhelmed by your generosity and the way in which each surprise There is a dangerous driving trend that seems to be increasing here in Western New York. When there is an obstruction on one side of a roadway caused by a garbage truck or a UPS delivery truck for instance, drivers feel free to cross the center line into oncoming traffic just so that they won’t have to wait. This action forces oncoming drivers to head for the shoulder of the road to avoid a collision. It is not your right to put other drivers in danger of a head on collision just because you are too inconsiderate to wait until your lane of travel is open. Don’t do this to other innocent drivers on the road.

5 Stars to the Chili Highway Dept., especially the Leaf Crew. We have a lot of leaves on our street, and they are put to the curb for pick up. With the early snowfall and cold weather, I thought we’d have to wait until Spring. Saturday morning, December 28th, there was the crew to do

On 11/05, as six cars waited in the parking lot at [local] labs because it was raining, a younger woman drove up, jumped out of her car and stood as close to the door of the lab as she could. When others got out and explain to her we were in line in the cars because it was raining, and one elderly woman said she had two spine surgeries and couldn’t stand that long to wait, she screamed, “So what? I’m here first!” Then she got out her phone and started texting someone with a big smile on her face like she was proud of what she did.

A customer surprised us and bought this Vet & wife our dinner. Thank you! More than once! We will pay it forward!

Well, I guess it’s that time of year when roads and driveways fill with snow and need to be plowed. While driving down the road, after it’s plowed, it’s clear to see where the selfish and self-important people live, as they plow their driveways out onto the road for everyone else to have to drive through. On my road, there is a man at the bottom of a hill with 2 driveways. After he plows his snow onto the road, the driver won’t see it ‘til he’s in it and could slide, losing control. I have a message for these snow hogs: the world doesn’t revolve around you; show your fellow man some consideration.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings. TRIVIA TEST By Fifi Rodriguez

Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits. HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Use that Arian charm to help make a difficult workplace transition easier for everyone. News about a long-awaited decision can be confusing. Don’t jump to conclusions. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Although you might well be tempted to be more extravagant than you should be at this time, I’m betting you’ll let your sensible Bovine instinct guide you toward moderation. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) An opportunity for travel could come with some problems regarding travel companions and other matters. So be sure you read all the fine print before you start packing. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Make an effort to complete your usual workplace tasks before volunteering for extra duty. Scrambling to catch up later on could create some resentment among your colleagues. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A financial matter could have you rethinking your current spending plans. You might want to recheck your budget to see where you can cut back on expenses until the situation improves. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) One way to make your case for that promotion you’ve been hoping for might be to put your planning skills to work in helping to shape up a project that got out of hand. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Be careful about “experts” who have no solid business background. Instead, seek advice on enhancing your business prospects from bona fide sources with good success records. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Standing up to support a colleague’s viewpoint -- even if it’s unpopular -- can be difficult if you feel outnumbered. But you’ll win plaudits for your honesty and courage. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) While progress continues on resolving that recurring problem, you might feel it’s taking too long. But these things always need to develop at their own pace. Be patient. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Someone close to you might have a financial problem and seek your advice. If you do decide to get involved, insist on seeing everything that might be relevant to this situation. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A personal matter takes an interesting turn. The question is, do you want to follow the new path or take time out to reconsider the change? Think this through before deciding. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Moving into a new career is a big step. Check that offer carefully with someone who has been there, done that, and has the facts you’ll need to help you make your decision. The Gift of Glasses By Maggie Fitzgibbon

W

hen Brooke Bennett’s glasses broke for the second time, she was devastated. Bennett, an 11th grade student at the Mount Morris Academy, broke her glasses two times within a week. Her mom repaired the glasses the first time, and when the glasses were broken during Physical Education class, a Mount Morris Academy teacher attempted to put the glasses back together for her. Unfortunately, glue accidently got on one of the lenses and rendered the glasses useless. “I just got these glasses last year, and my mom had told me that our insurance only covers new glasses every two years. She also told me that we could not afford to pay for new glasses, so I was upset and frustrated,” Brooke explained. That’s when Holly Wetherbee, Assistant Principal of the Mount Morris Academy, reached out to her friend Jenni Leuzzi, owner of Mill Creek Optical in Dansville.

“I called Brooke’s mom to explain the situation. I asked if it would be ok if I reached out to a friend who might be able to help. Brooke’s Mom was so grateful, and she shared Brooke’s prescription information. I called Jenni and asked if she could make a pair of glasses for Brooke. Without any hesitation, Jenni said, ‘Yes.’ Just a few hours later, I walked out of her store with new glasses for Brooke,” Wetherbee said. Monday morning arrived. As Brooke walked into school, Wetherbee met her at the front door of the Mount Morris Academy and handed her the new glasses. Brooke was speechless and became emotional. “I was so surprised, and I really like my new glasses,” Brooke said.

The Mount Morris Academy is located on the campus of the Mount Morris Career and Technical Education Center, located in Mount Morris, New York. This school provides a small, nurturing environment, which gives each student the maximum amount of attention necessary to improve academic and social skills. Programs have been specifically designed to provide an educational option for students from component school districts in grades 7-12 whose needs are not met by our traditional secondary schools. Teachers assist students in attaining a high school diploma through maintaining the same academic requirements as home schools. The Mount Morris Academy and Mount Morris Career and Technical Education Center are programs of the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership. The Partnership operates as a Board of Cooperative Educational Services providing shared programs and services to 22 component school districts located in Genesee, Wyoming, Livingston and Steuben Counties in New York State.

“I’m thrilled that Jenni could help Brooke,” Wetherbee noted.

Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at www.gvpennysaver.com:

Leuzzi recently paid a visit to the Mount Morris Academy to check on Brooke and made some adjustments to Brooke’s glasses. When asked why she so willingly gave her time to make and gift them, she replied, “If you can’t see then you can’t learn. Over 80 percent of your learning is done through your eyes,” Leuzzi added, “And most importantly, it feels good to make other people happy.” With tears in her eyes, Brooke turned to Leuzzi and said an emotional thank you.

EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED WHEN RENOVATING Delays or schedule changes: Even the best contractors cannot control every aspect of the job. They rely on subcontractors and vendors to do portions of the work. Materials may not always arrive on time, or they may fall short of homeowners’ expectations. This can push back the project schedule. Homeowners should hope for everything to be done on time, but it can be less stressful if homeowners anticipate delays and be a pleasant surprise if there are no delays.

W ith the country deep in the throes of w inter w eather, and hurricane season fast approaching, experts are reminding homeow ners that having a plan in place can be the difference betw een survival and aw aiting help from others. Coming on the heels of some of the w orst string of natural disasters this nation has ever know n (think w inter storms Nemo, Dion, Gemini or Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, and of course Katrina), these forces of M other Nature highlight the importance of being prepared.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Jan. 19, 1915, during World War I, Britain suffers its first casualties from an air attack when two German zeppelins drop bombs on the eastern coast of England. On Jan. 15, 1951, Ilse Koch, wife of the commandant of the Buchenwald concentration camp, is sentenced to life imprisonment in a court in West Germany. Nicknamed the “Witch of Buchenwald,” Ilse collected lampshades, book covers and gloves made from the skin of tattooed camp prisoners. On Jan. 14, 1969, an explosion aboard the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise kills 27 people in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. A rocket accidentally detonated, destroying 15 planes and injuring more than 300 people. The Enterprise was the first-ever nuclear-powered aircraft carrier when it was launched in 1960.

(NAPS)—There is a public health threat looming across the United States that’s not visible to most but affects nearly half of all Americans daily: loneliness. Social isolation is as bad for your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day and is twice as harmful as obesity. Worst of all, loneliness is a contributing factor in senior suicides, which are rising in the U.S. While it is not something people like to think about, now more than ever, Americans must remove the stigma around mental health and spread awareness to better combat loneliness. Many of the 12 million Americans over age 65 who live alone are entering the time of year where that lack of companionship and isolation is most palpable: winter. Whether physical or travel challenges keep seniors from attending family gatherings or the harsh weather deters them from venturing out for a social event, seniors can suffer from prolonged loneliness that can quickly manifest into more serious issues. Loneliness does not have to be synonymous with getting older or with aging in place. Here are tips on how to help keep loneliness— and its negative health effects—at bay: • Intervene early: Spotting loneliness in yourself or someone you love can be difficult. The most common physical and behavioral signs of loneliness include persistent sadness, impaired cognitive performance, lower self-esteem, or lack of motivation and energy. Early intervention can positively affect one’s quality of life, so it’s important to address these symptoms as soon as possible before they become overwhelming. • Leverage technology: Technology can play a key role in reducing loneliness, ensuring seniors are always connected to loved ones and care teams who can monitor and interact with them. For example, Philips Cares is a mobile application that helps connect seniors who are subscribers to Philips Lifeline service with their family and friends, helping to enable these caregivers to be there for their aging loved ones, easing and enriching their aging journey. • Make a connection: Connecting with people, purpose and passions will help eliminate feelings of isolation. Consider organizing a reoccurring social gathering, such as a book club or a group fitness class. Explore local activities organized by a senior community center or find a National Council of Aging program through www.ncoa.org/ncoa-map. SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Pick a partner. Whether it’s a spouse or a friend who is physically active or wants to be, try exercising with a partner, at least initially. Doing so can provide the motivation you need and partners can serve as safety nets should you need assistance completing an exercise or suffer an injury and require medical attention. Personal trainers can serve as your partner, and many gyms offer discounts to seniors on personal training services.

HOW TO COMBAT FOUR PET PEEVES AROUND THE HOUSE (NAPSI)—If your family is like most, there are a few things about your home that really annoy you. Fortunately, ingenious solutions are available for four of the most common pet peeves when it comes to lighting and electronics:

REAL ESTATE SECTION

1. Never Enough Outlets: The average family charges up to 12 devices a day. With connectivity more prevalent than ever, the demand for convenient charging options is at an all-time high. The adorne Pop-Out Outlet from Legrand features three standard receptacles for added power and can disappear into the wall when not in use. Plus, its tamper-resistant plugs will keep children safe. Now you can simultaneously charge phones, tablets and laptops with an outlet made to maximize charging needs. 2. Lights Carelessly Being Left On: Constantly reminding people to turn off the bedroom lights? You can install motion sensors that automatically turn lights on when someone enters the room and shut lights off when the room is no longer occupied. 3. Phone Charger Mysteriously Disappearing: Scouring your home for a phone charger can be a thing of the past when you replace standard outlets with an instant, cord- and clutter-free way to charge phones, such as the new-to-market Wireless Charger from the radiant Collection. 4. Lack of Light at Night: Make the walk to the bathroom or the nursery at night a little brighter by installing night lights in hallways, kitchens and children’s rooms. Some night lights even offer adjustable light levels or can convert to flashlights. Two attractive solutions can be found in the radiant and adorne Collections by Legrand. For a home with more traditional aesthetics, the radiant Collection offers a Night Light with Two Tamper-Resistant Outlets. It features five adjustable light levels and an optional louver for additional light-level control. For a more modern and design-savvy look, there’s the one from the adorne Collection. It provides a soft glow and with ambient light level sensors, so it’s visible only in dark spaces. A few simple switches around the house can help you have more control over your home’s lights and electronics. While you’re improving your place, you may care to consider adorne appbased lighting control options, designed to provide solutions that offer whole-house control with the touch of a button. Homeowners who have both Legrand smart lighting systems and Voice Control−enabled devices from Google or Amazon can now power and dim lights simply by saying phrases like “OK, Google, turn on the porch lights” and “Alexa, dim the living room to 50 percent” without needing to reach for a phone, tablet, or light switch. Balancing tires involves equalizing the w eight of the combined tire and w heel assembly so that each tire spins smoothly on the road. Tires are mounted on the w heel assembly, and the chances of this assembly having precise w eight distribution is nearly impossible w ithout a little help. According to Discount Tire, the slightest imbalance in the tires, even as little as half an ounce, can be felt by drivers. Unequal mass can make tires w obble, causing noticeable vibrations. M echanics w ill test tire balance by putting it on a balancing machine. The machine w ill spin the tire and determine the tire’s heaviest point. Counteracting w eights w ill be placed on the tire hubs to create a more uniform balance of w eight. Lead w eights are often used, but some are being phased out for other metals, such as zinc, because of the medical and environmental implications of lead. Tires that are not balanced w ill not only cause vibration, they also can lead to uneven w ear.

DID YOU KNOW? The Ford Motor Company’s Model T was offered in several styles, not unlike how vehicles of today are offered in various models. Among the Model T styles available was a two-seat runabout, which can be considered a precursor to the coupe style popular today, and a seven-seat town car, which might be considered an ancestor of today’s SUV, at least with regard to passenger capacity. While prospective Model T drivers had some options when choosing which Model T they wanted to purchase, between 1913 and 1925 the car was produced only in black. The Model T engine was a 4-cylinder engine that generated 20 horsepower. To put that latter figure into perspective, many of today’s riding lawn mowers are 20 horsepower, and some commercial lawn riding mowers provide as much as 40 horsepower. While car dealers might not sell too many cars featuring 4-cylinder, 20 horsepower engines today, historical estimates suggest that more than 15 million Model T’s were built and sold between 1908 and 1927, the last year the car was produced.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF HONEY

Hours: M-F 8-5, Sat. 9-12

Has antibacterial and antifungal properties: According to the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey is antibacterial. Honey will not foster growth of these microorganisms because it contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Because of these properties, some people say that honey can help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis, or other conditions where fungi and bacteria grow unchecked.

DID YOU KNOW? Many people make losing weight and/or getting fit their New Year’s resolutions, and the dawn of a new calendar year is often a great time to find discounts on gym memberships. According to Consumer Reports, many gyms and fitness centers, recognizing the desire people have to start the year off on a healthy foot, will greatly discount the cost of memberships in January. But signing up for a discounted gym membership on the morning of January 1 is not the only way to save money and still get fit. Prospective members willing to commit to 12-month memberships may be able to get a gym with costly initiation fees to waive that fee. In addition, e-commerce businesses like Groupon® and LivingSocial may also offer discounted memberships to area gyms through their websites. Fitness-minded people may also be eligible for health club rebates through their health insurance plans. In such instances, health insurance providers may reward policy holders who visit the gym a predetermined number of times in a specific time frame (i.e., 50 visits in six months) with rebates. Such rebates can save club members several hundred dollars per year, greatly reducing the overall cost of their gym memberships. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOME FIRE RISKS INCREASE AS WEATHER COOLS

(NAPSI)—The fall and winter seasons bring cooler temperatures, holidays, and images of cozy nights by the fireplace. Yet the change in seasons also comes with the chance of severe weather and an increase in fire risks. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more home fires occur in winter than in any other season. “Holiday decorations, space heaters, generators, and fireplaces all present fire hazards if not properly used and maintained,” said Steve Hirsch, chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “Residents should be aware of the dangers and take the steps to make sure their families and homes are protected.”

HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can benefit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States.

Follow these tips to minimize home fire and safety risks: • Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of the home. Test monthly to ensure they work. • Install carbon monoxide alarms and test them at least once a month. • Know where the gas, electric, and water main shut-off controls are and how to use them.

2020 Registration Info

• Place fire extinguishers in the kitchen, garage, and living room, and make sure all household members know how to use them. • Develop a home fire escape plan and practice it with the entire family. • Keep portable generators outside and away from the home. • Install a screen in front of each fireplace or wood stove. Store cooled ashes in a metal container outside the home.

Residents can also take an active role in protecting their communities from hazards such as fires, medical emergencies, and much more. Fire departments across the country are looking for volunteers to serve as firefighters, EMS providers, and auxiliary members. “The majority of firefighters in the U.S. are volunteers—neighbors helping neighbors in an incredible and rewarding way,” said Hirsch. “We need more people to answer the call to serve.” Training is provided by the department, and volunteers can serve in a variety of roles, from providing life-saving emergency response services to conducting fire prevention programs and disaster preparedness planning. Is Overexercise Cause of ‘Knots in the Back’?

One path of renewal is found in

DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife is 69 and in very good health, exercising at least two hours a day. She has suffered from “knots in the back” for over 10 years. It is extremely painful, often bringing her to tears. It comes on suddenly at any time of the day or night, and lasts hours, days and occasionally weeks. She has been to several physicians, whose recommendations are to “live with it.” She has tried chiropractic, massage therapy, prescription and OTC painkillers, stretching and home massage, all to no avail. I cannot see the knots, but I can feel a tightness when I attempt to rub them out, which usually does nothing. A glass of wine is the only reliable relief, and it lasts only a few hours. Is there any recourse to this condition? -- J.P. ANSWER: I am sure you and your wife must be frustrated. The fact that it comes on suddenly, can be felt as tightness and gets a bit better with alcohol makes me strongly suspect she is having muscle spasms. These most often come on in the legs and feet, but they can affect the back too. Two hours a day of exercising sounds like a lot, and she may be overexercising some muscles, while possibly not exercising others. This can lead to imbalances in muscle strength. Another common problem stemming from exercising is inadequate stretching. Stretching is the first place to start for many people with muscle cramps. A physical therapist or physiatrist may be of immense benefit, and your wife should explain in detail what her exercise regimen is. We are taught to think carefully of the mechanism of injury, and I am concerned the exercise may be that injury. Abnormalities in electrolytes (blood salts, especially potassium, sodium, magnesium and phosphate) are only rarely the cause, although many people write me that they have been helped by taking one or more of these. Primary muscle diseases, side effects from medications and inadequate hydration are possible, but also unlikely. In absence of detailed knowledge about her exercise regimen, I’d recommend she try backing off a bit, maybe using ice after exercise, stretching the back under supervision and trying a hot bath or shower before bed.

MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES Undereye bags can cause shadows to form and increase the appearance of dark circles. To remedy this, try to reduce fluid pooling in the face. Sleep elevated on a few pillows so that fluid flows away from the eyes. Reduce consumption of alcohol and salty foods, which can exacerbate fluid retention. Cool compresses can be used to massage fluid gently away from the eyes as well.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 78-year-old who runs 15-20 miles per week, with prostate gland enlargement and reduced urinary frequency with occasional use of Advil. As a runner, I have been reluctant to make ibuprofen a daily regimen because I have read that inflammation is part of the body’s response to tissue damage, which is crucial to the healing process and is important for muscle growth. When ibuprofen’s anti-inflammatory effect reduces symptoms, does it affect the healing process also? Can you comment on the pros and cons for runners? -- B.M. ANSWER: High-dose ibuprofen was shown to inhibit muscle protein synthesis following weightlifting exercise. This led to a suspicion that it might impair the gains in muscle strength that are made with exercise. However, a Canadian study showed that moderate doses of ibuprofen (400 mg after exercise) did not impair muscle growth or gains in strength. Using ibuprofen for occasional muscle soreness or for the purpose of reducing prostate inflammation should not adversely affect your performance in running. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. PREVENT CO POISONING (NAPSI)—Each year, more than 400 people die from unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and more than 20,000 visit the emergency room. CO poisoning can be prevented with a few precautions:

ONTARIO HEARING CENTERS A Rochester Practice Since 1956

What To Do • Never use portable electric generators, charcoal grills or other similar devices inside your home, garage or in any confined area that can let carbon monoxide collect. • Have your chimney, fireplace and woodstoves inspected before every heating season. • Turn off space heaters before leaving a room or going to sleep. • Never run your car engine for more than a few moments in a garage, even if the door to the outside is open. Fumes can build up quickly and can spread to the living area of your home. • Look for clues that home appliances may be malfunctioning. Common indicators include decreased hot water supply, soot on appliances, moisture inside windows, and furnaces not heating properly. • Install at least one carbon monoxide detector, connected to a monitoring center that operates 24/7, on every level of your home. Real protection comes from ADT—keeping your family safe from poisonous CO gas that can cause dizziness, unconsciousness and possibly death if undetected. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Deciding if you need coverage. While life insurance seems like the kind of thing every person should have, that’s not necessarily the case. For example, single men and women with no dependents and no tax or debt concerns generally do not need life insurance. If you are single but have tax issues or a considerable amount of debt, then a life insurance policy can be used to pay those debts upon your death. Adults with dependents, such as a spouse and/or children, should consider purchasing life insurance, which can help your surviving dependents maintain their quality of life and pay their bills in the wake of your death.

THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning protects families faced with sudden death. Few people want to think about their deaths, and fewer still want to think about dying suddenly and/or dying young. Preplanning a funeral and setting money aside early can protect and help families faced with sudden deaths. That can be especially important for young parents, who won’t want to leave their spouses and children financially destitute should they suddenly pass away.

Ronald L. Hallinen “Ron” January 13, 2020 Lakeville: At age 80, Ron passed peacefully on January 13, 2020. Predeceased by his parents Leo and Mildred Hallinen. He then went on to the University of Rochester, earned a Bachelor’s Degree, and then on to Syracuse University with a Master’s in Social Work. Ron started his Social Work Career at Craig Developmental Center in Sonyea, NY and went on to become Director of Mental Health Services in Genesee County. He finished his career as Health Services Director in Oneonta, NY in Ostego County. He loved his grandchildren and was an avid fan of Syracuse athletics and the Buffalo Bills. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO ANSWER THE CALL

Join us for our Annual

(NAPSI)—When an emergency strikes, firefighters are there to answer the call. In fact, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports that fire departments responded to over 35 million calls in 2016. What people may not realize is that the majority of these firefighters are volunteers, donating their time and energy to be there for those in need. “It really is neighbors helping neighbors,” said Steve Hirsch, volunteer firefighter and chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council. “There is nothing more rewarding than being a volunteer firefighter—we are there for our neighbors when they are having their worst possible day.” The need for volunteer firefighters is stronger than ever. While the number of calls has tripled in the last 30 years, the number of volunteer firefighters has decreased. This trend has become especially noticeable in the last few years. According to NFPA data, there were 682,600 volunteer firefighters in 2017, down from 814,850 in 2015.

Despite the decline, volunteers play a critical role in the nation’s emergency services, particularly in small and rural communities. Of the nearly 30,000 fire departments in the U.S., 83 percent are either entirely or mostly volunteer. These volunteers respond to nearly every type of emergency—structure fires, wildfires, medical emergencies, natural disasters, vehicle crashes, hazardous materials spills, search and rescue, active shooter threats, and more. “We need more people to step up and serve so that we can continue to provide critical life saving services in our local communities,” said Hirsch. “The biggest requirement is the desire to help others. The rest can be taught.” For those who want to help but aren’t able to commit to becoming a firefighter or EMS provider, volunteers are also needed to fill non-operational roles. Community members can join a department’s auxiliary program to provide needed support services such as fire prevention education, disaster planning, fundraising, administration, and much more. Volunteering with a local fire department takes commitment and dedication, but the benefits are many. Making a difference, saving lives, developing new skills, and being part of a close knit team are all reasons people choose to volunteer. “I’m a lawyer by trade, but I don’t think about that every day. I think every day about being a volunteer firefighter. It truly is the most impactful way I can serve my community,” said Hirsch. WOMEN AND STEM The number of women entering the professional fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is slowly growing around the world, but there is still a sizable gender gap in these professions. According to the College Board, which produces many standardized tests, only 27 percent of all students taking the AP Computer Science exam in the United Science are women. Similarly, just 18 percent of American computerscience degrees are attained by females. However, this is not the case elsewhere in the world. A paper by Gijsbert Stoet and David Geary published in Psychological Science noted that women who live in countries with traditionally higher gender inequality tend to choose STEM professions more readily. Algeria, for example, has one of the highest ratios of women in STEM professions, at 41 percent. Stoet and Geary surmise that women in these countries may be choosing careers with the strongest path to financial independence.

ADVICE FOR A SUCCESSFUL CAREER CHANGE

755 Jefferson Road Suite 200 Rochester, NY 14623

Use your network. The notion that “it’s not what you know, but who you know” has some truth to it. Successful jobseekers continually expand their professional contacts. This is achieved by going to informational interviews, attending trade association meetings and reviewing trade publications. Target people who work at the companies where you see yourself, so you can get the inside track about job openings.
