PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER

Shopping local shops, farms and fairs is a great w ay to enjoy the fresh autumn air w hile supporting local businesses.

Some women who have a high risk of breast cancer may choose to have a risk-reducing mastectomy (the removal of both breasts when there are no signs of cancer). The risk of breast cancer is much lower in these women and most feel less anxious about their risk of breast cancer. However, it is very important to have a cancer risk assessment and counseling about the different ways to prevent breast cancer before making this decision.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson If you have a beautiful planter that has no drainage holes, you can pot your plant in a second pot that will fit inside. Put a few pebbles in the bottom of the pretty planter, then put your potted plant in. This way, the roots won’t rot in any excess water. You can cover any gap between the pots with a bit of moss or more pebbles.” -- K.D. in Georgia

Hallow een is certainly know n for the spooky decorations that adorn homes and for the creative costumes children put on to canvas the neighborhood. But for many youngsters, Hallow een is all about the candy. In just a few hours, trick-or-treaters can accumulate a substantial amount of assorted chocolates, confections and other sw eet treats. Once everyone has had their fill of their favorite items, candy often gets relegated to a giant bow l on the kitchen table, w here it beckons each resident w ho passes by. Rather than submitting to the call of the candy and sacrificing your dental health as a result, enterprising individuals can repurpose that leftover Hallow een candy.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Oct. 15, 1917, Mata Hari, the seductive female spy, is executed for espionage by a French firing squad. Mata Hari claimed to have been born in a sacred temple, but in reality, the exotic dancer was born Margaretha Geertruida Zelle in Holland.

How to give back to seniors in your community The strongest communities tend to be those in which members make a concerted effort to give as much as they get. Giving back to one’s community can foster strong relationships with fellow residents and ensure that everyone, including the less fortunate, is in position to live happy, healthy lives. Certain people in a community may be more vulnerable to issues that can adversely affect quality of life than others. For example, the National Institute on Aging notes that, as men and women age, many are alone more often than when they were younger, leaving them vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness. Such feelings can prove very harmful to their health, potentially contributing to problems such as depression, cognitive decline and heart disease. Volunteering to help the aging members of one’s community is a great way to give back, and such efforts can prove rewarding for both seniors and the volunteers who lend them a hand.

• On Oct. 17, 1931, gangster Al Capone is sentenced to 11 years in prison for tax evasion. Capone had avoided long stints in jail by bribing city officials and intimidating witnesses, and tax evasion was the only way federal agent Elliot Ness and “The Untouchables” could get him. • On Oct. 14, 1947, U.S. Air Force Capt. Chuck Yeager becomes the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. His X-1 rocket plane was dropped from a B-29 aircraft, rocketed to 40,000 feet and exceeded 662 mph. * On Oct. 16, 1958, Chevrolet begins to sell a car-truck hybrid that it calls the El Camino. The vehicle, a combination sedan-pickup truck built on a station-wagon platform, was discontinued two years later, but was brought back in 1964.

• Pull an extra chair up to the dinner table. Many a meaningful connection has been made and maintained over the dinner table. Breaking bread with a senior from your community is a great way to foster such connections and provide an avenue for social interaction for seniors. Seniors who live alone might not enjoy cooking for one each night, but they might jump at the chance to eat dinner with a neighbor and even help prepare the meal. Invite a senior over once per week, encouraging them to share stories about their lives as well as how the community has developed over the years. • Help seniors manage their finances. Many seniors struggle to manage their finances, as laws regarding taxes and investing are subject to routine changes. A little help in this area can go a long way for seniors. Adults who want to help but don’t know where to begin can do the legwork for their aging neighbors. Contact agencies such as AARP to determine if there are any financial assistance programs that can help seniors effectively manage their money and take advantage of age-specific perks, such as programs that may help seniors lower their energy costs. • Offer to help around the house. Seniors who reside in singlefamily homes may not be able to keep up with routine home maintenance. Neighbors who want to help can offer to mow the lawn, tend to the landscaping and tidy up inside. Keep an eye open for other issues, such as clogged gutters, that can be fixed easily but prove costly if they go ignored. Helping aging neighbors is a great way to give back and build strong communities. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.

PROTECTIVE FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER

PAVING & SEALING

Decreasing the length of time a woman’s breast tissue is exposed to estrogen may help prevent breast cancer. Exposure to estrogen is reduced in the following ways: • Early pregnancy: Estrogen levels are lower during pregnancy. Women who have a full-term pregnancy before age 20 have a lower risk of breast cancer than women who have not had children or who give birth to their first child after age 35. • Breast-feeding: Estrogen levels may remain lower while a woman is breast-feeding. Women who breastfed have a lower risk of breast cancer than women who have had children but did not breastfeed.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING A clinical breast exam is an exam of the breast by a doctor or other health professional. The doctor will carefully feel the breasts and under the arms for lumps or anything else that seems unusual. It is not known if having clinical breast exams decreases the chance of dying from breast cancer. Breast self-exams may be done by women or men to check their breasts for lumps or other changes. It is important to know how your breasts usually look and feel. If you feel any lumps or notice any other changes, talk to your doctor. Doing breast self-exams has not been shown to decrease the chance of dying from breast cancer.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT FALL A season by any other name . Fall is the term most often used to reference the season succeeding summer in the United States. But the season is referred to as “autumn” in other parts of the world, including Great Britain. Fall was once even known as “harvest” because of the harvest moon, which appears close to the autumnal equinox.

Wilson stamped the barrels with “U.S.” for United States, but soldiers began referring to the grub as “Uncle Sam’s.”

Leaves cascading dow n from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. How ever, colorful and aw e-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long. Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from grow ing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But w et leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the law n through the w inter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons w hy so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall.

Debunking Common Myths Associated With Breast Cancer Cancer claims the lives of millions of people across the globe every year. Yet the fight against cancer is anything but hopeless, as the World Health Organization notes that between 30 and 50 percent of all cancer cases are preventable. Learning about cancer is one of the best ways for people to protect themselves from this deadly disease. Researchers continue to learn more about cancer every day and routinely discover that information once thought to be accurate was actually off-base. Despite researchers’ best efforts, some myths about cancer still prevail. Some of these myths are about cancer in general, while others refer to specific cancers, including breast cancer. Myths about breast cancer can be as harmful as accurate information is helpful, so learning the truth and debunking those myths can be an important part of women’s preventive approach to breast cancer. • Myth: Drinking milk increases your risk for breast cancer. The American Cancer Society notes that early studies raised concerns that drinking milk from cows treated with hormones could increase a person’s risk for breast cancer. However, ensuing research failed to find a clear link between the two. In fact, a 2002 study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology found no significant association between dairy fluid intake and breast cancer risk. • Myth: Lumps indicate breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Foundation® (NBCF) says that only a small percentage of breast lumps turn out to be cancer. However, abnormalities or changes in breast tissue should always be brought to the attention of a physician. • Myth: Mammograms cause breast cancer to spread. This myth is rooted in the incorrect notion that breast compression while getting a mammogram causes the cancer to spread. However, the NBCF insists that cannot happen. In fact, the National Cancer Institute touts the benefits of mammograms while the ACS recommends women between the ages of 45 and 54 get mammograms every year. For additional breast cancer screening guidelines, visit the ACS at www.cancer.org. • Myth: Women with a family history of breast cancer are likely to develop breast cancer, too. This myth is dangerous because, if taken at face value, it can give women with no family history of breast cancer a false sense of security. However, the NBCF notes that only about 10 percent of individuals diagnosed with breast cancer have a family history of the disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that a woman’s risk for breast cancer is higher if she has a first-degree relative, including a mother, sister, daughter, or even a male family member, who have had the disease. But breast cancer can affect anyone, regardless of their family history. Information is a valuable asset in the fight against breast cancer. Learning to decipher between accurate and false information can be especially valuable.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING MRI is a procedure that uses a magnet, radio waves, and a computer to make a series of detailed pictures of areas inside the body. This procedure is also called nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI). MRI does not use any x-rays. MRI is used as a screening test for women who have one or more of the following: • Certain gene changes, such as in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes. • A family history (first degree relative, such as a mother, daughter or sister) with breast cancer. • Certain genetic syndromes, such as Li-Fraumeni or Cowden syndrome. MRIs find breast cancer more often than mammograms do, but it is common for MRI results to appear abnormal even when there isn’t any cancer. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

It’s a shame you feel you’re owed this benefit more than others. You should be ashamed, but I doubt you are. Hoping this message shames you into returning the Pass and apologizing to the librarians who must keep telling other patrons they can’t help them. It was a stupid thing to do. My light turned green, and I started making a left. You peeled out of that restaurant like a bat of you know where with no turn signal on. You were lucky I was able to bring the car to a stop halfway out as my classic car is not made with power brakes. It was a stupid, dangerous thing to do. I was tempted to

and that is why I want to thank them for a job well done. Anthony takes the time to try and explain things, and Gary is courteous and always pleasant, so much so that I wouldn’t know if he was having a bad day. They do their jobs without so much asan accolade and so in behalf of my family and I, I feel they deserve a shout out. Thank you for not only a job well done, but more importantly, thank you for being kind, courteous, and considerate while taking care of your customers’ needs.

backtrack and tell the police in the grocery store parking lot who were attending to a fender bender . I had a test taken and the doctor’s office said the results should be in on Friday. I told them I would call on Monday. So, on Monday I called three times and couldn’t get an answer. The doctor’s office can’t keep any help. There is always someone new that has no answers. I wonder why they can’t keep any help. My time is worth something also. They think just because they are doctors, they are above everyone else.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You could be caught in a torrent of advice from wellmeaning friends and colleagues this week. But remember, Lamb, you are at your best when you are your own inimitable self. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Expect strong efforts to get you to accept things as they are and not question them. But ignore all that and continue your inquiries until you’re sure you have all the answers you need. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Heavier than usual family and workplace duties compete for your time this week. Try to strike a balance so that you’re not overwhelmed by either. Pressures ease by week’s end. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s a good time for the Moon Child to show off your uniquely inspired approach to the culinary skills -especially if they’re directed toward impressing someone special. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might be happy about the re-emergence of a longdeferred deal. But don’t pounce on it quite yet. Time can change things. Be sure the values you looked for before are still there. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Try to rein in your super-critical attitude, even if things aren’t being done quite as you would prefer. Remember: What you say now could create an awkward situation later on. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Although you can expect on-the-job cooperation from most of your colleagues this week, some people might insist on knowing more about your plans before they can accept them. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Creating another way to do things is commendable. But you could find some resistance this week from folks who would rather stick with the tried-and-true than try something new. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You usually can keep your aim focused on your goal. But you might need to make adjustments to cope with unsteadiness factors that could arise over the course of the week. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) News arrives about a projected move. Be prepared to deal with a series of possible shifts, including starting and finishing times, and how much the budget will actually cover. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new relationship needs time to develop. Let things flow naturally. It could be a different story with a workplace situation, which might require faster and more focused attention. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Accept a compliment without trying to troll for any hidden reason beyond what was said. After all, don’t you deserve to be praised every now and then? Of course you do. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to weigh all possibilities before making a decision. You would be a fine judge, or even be a star in a jury room.

RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Radiation therapy to the chest for the treatment of cancer increases the risk of breast cancer, starting 10 years after treatment. The risk of breast cancer depends on the dose of radiation and the age at which it is given. The risk is highest if radiation treatment was used during puberty, when breasts are forming. Radiation therapy to treat cancer in one breast does not appear to increase the risk of cancer in the other breast. For women who have inherited changes in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, exposure to radiation, such as that from chest x-rays, may further increase the risk of breast cancer, especially in women who were x-rayed before 20 years of age.

BREAST CANCER IS THE SECOND MOST COMMON TYPE OF CANCER IN AMERICAN WOMEN. Women in the United States get breast cancer more than any other type of cancer except skin cancer. Breast cancer is second to lung cancer as a cause of cancer death in American women. However, deaths from breast cancer have decreased a little bit every year between 2003 and 2012. Breast cancer also occurs in men, but the number of new cases is small.

Experienced Prosecutor Justin Hill is seeking to become one of two Livingston County Court Judges. Livingston County has two elected judge positions. Both positions will be open in 2019 due to the mandated retirement of the sitting court judges. Justin has the depth and breadth of experience necessary to be an exemplary County Court Judge. Drawn to protecting the community, Justin has served as an Assistant District Attorney in Livingston, Erie, and Monroe counties. He has handled thousands of misdemeanor and felony cases and numerous felony and misdemeanor trials. He has served as a prosecutor in the Major Felony Bureau, Felony DWI Bureau, the County Court Bureau, and the Local Justice Court Bureau. As an Assistant District Attorney in Livingston County, Justin has prosecuted the most dangerous domestic abusers and child predators in the community. “I want the people of Livingston County to know that it is my firm belief that our community deserves elected judges who have integrity, a firm understanding of the law, and independence to make decisions irrespective of partisan political labels. I am running for Livingston County Court Judge for many reasons. They include, but are not limited to:

• I am in our courts - town and countyevery day prosecuting violent and non-violent crimes; • I have successfully tried and taken to verdict cases including Rape, Robbery, Domestic Violence, Burglary, Larceny, Driving While Intoxicated (DWI), and Assault; • I am proud not only of my record of convictions, but also the reputation I have cultivated in the courthouse and community. Judges are confident that I will come to court prepared. Other attorneys know that I am fair, honest, and practice law with integrity. Victims of crimes can rely on me to make sure that justice is served; • My experiences in Erie, Monroe and Livingston Counties have enabled me to gain experience in many different courts and earn the respect of defense attorneys, prosecutors, civil attorneys, and members of the judiciary throughout New York State. It is my intention to ensure that our community is kept safe and that everyone who comes before the Livingston County Court is treated with respect and fairness. Throughout my career, and in each of the positions that I have held, I have done my best to conduct myself in a manner that reflects a temperament and demeanor that reflects positively on the legal system. My pledge to the people of Livingston County is that when I am elected, I will administer justice firmly and fairly.”

Lima Horse Rescue Celebrates 10 Years with Open House By Amanda Dudek with excerpts from BAHR n October 2009, three friends with a shared love for horses formed Begin Again Horse Rescue, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit (BAHR). 10 years later, BAHR continues its mission to rescue, physically and mentally rehabilitate and re-home horses in need. With their Open House on October 13th, they will celebrate having already safely placed 176 horses in permanent lease adoptive homes. 2019 has been quite the year of firsts for BAHR. “We had our first horse show in Newark,” said Jennifer Lilly, Vice President and founding member. “We also held our first golf scramble tournament. In 2018, we opened a donations-based tack shop at the Little Lakes Community Center in Hemlock last fall, and it has gotten so popular that we are moving to a larger building nearby.” “Every year since we began in 2009, we’ve grown in numbers, knowledge and supporters,” said BAHR Executive Director Harriett Rubins. “One by one, we are making a difference in the lives of at-risk horses in our community. We are a small group filled with huge dedicated hearts.”

The exciting upcoming Open House will include informative presentations from local equine experts such as a farrier and a horse nutritionist, farm tours, raffles, kids activities and volunteer information. This event will not only raise critical funds for covering the sizeable winter expenses for the rescued horses currently in the care of BAHR, but also awareness of its mission. The rescue has been acknowledged by several organizations for its high standards including three-time winner of ASPCA Help A Horse national contest, consistently achieving a Guidestar Platinum rating for transparency and Global Federation of Animal Sanctuary verification. BAHR still has several adoptable horses available, including those featured here. For more information, to volunteer, to donate, adopt or for more information about the Open House or becoming a sponsor, please contact Begin Again Horse Rescue at 585-322-2427 or email at www.beginagainrescue.org.

Jolene is one of our most celebrated equines, given her size, her personality and her story. Jo is a 12-year-old mammoth molly mule, standing about 17.2 hands high. We found her standing in a pen at a kill pen auction, unable to raise her head due to cramped space. Her hooves were obviously neglected and very painful, although we did not know to what extent. After veterinary examination, it was found that Big Jo had multiple hoof ailments, and they were unsure if she could recover. Four trips to Cornell for treatments, countless hours of patient care by volunteers, and now years of attention have resulted in Jolene living comfortably. She will never be a working mule, but her loving disposition wins every visitor’s heart.

Pandora is a 12-year-old registered appaloosa mare who stands about 15 hands tall. She is a pretty solid bay color with a big star. She was part of a 2018 neglect case in Ontario County which resulted in the death of one horse and the legal seizure of three others. Dora is now healthy and ready for a home of her own. She is sound, has no special health needs, no vices and has started training as a riding horse. She has proven to be smart, athletic and willing to learn. She will require a rider experienced enough to finish her training but could go in any direction: pleasure or show.

Boo is a 6-year-old, 42” Shetland/Miniature cross mare. She has had a short but troubled past, starting with neglect as a youngster before she was surrendered into rescue with her sister. Difficult behavior brought her to BAHR, and after intensive veterinary diagnosis, it was discovered she suffers from gut ulcers. When Boo is under stress or in pain from the ulcers, she may act out aggressively. When she is relaxed and happy, she is sweet and willing. She has now been trained in hand obstacles and jumping, and also has been trained in long lines to drive. Boo will require a home experienced in the signs and treatment of gut ulcers with no small children. She is otherwise sound and healthy and has been turned out with other horses both large and small.

OPEN EMOTION When attending a funeral that features an open casket, visitors should prepare to view the body of the deceased. While there is no obligation to approach the casket, many find that viewing the body provides a chance to say a prayer or a final good-bye to the deceased. Understandably, some people become emotional when viewing the body. For anyone who wants to view the body but is afraid of becoming overwhelmed, it may be best to approach the casket with another person. Otherwise, those who are initially reluctant to view the body may find themselves growing more comfortable with the idea in an atmosphere where others so readily accept the practice as a means of gaining closure. The body of the deceased will often look different from how the person looked in life. If you are uncomfortable with an open casket, there is no obligation to view the body. The funeral is an experience of value and when properly planned can provide lasting satisfaction and comfort to the survivors. Our funeral service family can assist you in planning and coordinating all of the details and will explain all of the available options. To learn more about our funeral services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY.

“A hunch is creativity trying to tell you something…” ~ Frank Capra Did you ever have a hunch…a strong but unexplained feeling that something was going to happen? Most of us have hunches but we probably never think of them as having anything to do with “creativity.” Whether instinct or intuition, hunches have probably been responsible for some weighty decisions over the centuries. The military genius of Napoleon, the financial wizardry of the Rockefellers…perhaps they were the result of creative hunches that shaped the form of history. We take pride in providing this community with an essential service, rendered in accordance with the highest ethical standards of our profession.

HIKING: Hiking is a fun activity that can be enjoyed nearly year-round, but it’s especially enjoyable in the fall. That’s because few things in nature are as captivating as a park or forest w hen the fall foliage is in full bloom. Early fall also boasts ideal temperatures for hiking, as the mercury likely w on’t rise enough or sink low enough to produce the kind of extreme temperatures that can compromise a hiker’s afternoon. Instead, fall temperatures tend to be mild and comfortable, allow ing hikers to fully enjoy their often beautiful surroundings.
