DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

The bright summer had passed away, and gorgeous autumn was flinging its rainbow-tints of beauty on hill and dale. ~Cornelia L. Tuthill, “Virginia Dare: Or, the Colony of Roanoke,” 1840

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver Those who keep track of such things say that about 15 percent of all Google searches are new -- that is, they have never been searched before on Google.

Of all the seasons, autumn offers the most to man and requires the least of him. ~Hal Borland

RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Having breast tissue that is dense on a mammogram is a factor in breast cancer risk. The level of risk depends on how dense the breast tissue is. Women with very dense breasts have a higher risk of breast cancer than women with low breast density. Increased breast density is often an inherited trait, but it may also occur in women who have not had children, have a first pregnancy late in life, take postmenopausal hormones, or drink alcohol.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING A clinical breast exam is an exam of the breast by a doctor or other health professional. The doctor will carefully feel the breasts and under the arms for lumps or anything else that seems unusual. It is not known if having clinical breast exams decreases the chance of dying from breast cancer. Breast self-exams may be done by women or men to check their breasts for lumps or other changes. It is important to know how your breasts usually look and feel. If you feel any lumps or notice any other changes, talk to your doctor. Doing breast self-exams has not been shown to decrease the chance of dying from breast cancer.

DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

RISK FACTORS FOR BREAST CANCER Hormones, such as estrogen and progesterone, can be made into a pill form in a laboratory. Estrogen, progestin, or both may be given to replace the estrogen no longer made by the ovaries in postmenopausal women or women who have had their ovaries removed. This is called hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or hormone therapy (HT). Combination HRT/HT is estrogen combined with progestin. This type of HRT/HT increases the risk of breast cancer. Studies show that when women stop taking estrogen combined with progestin, the risk of breast cancer decreases.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A changing situation calls for a change in plans. Although you might prefer the schedule you had already worked up, you could do better by agreeing to make the needed adjustments. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) That once seemingly rock-solid proposition you favored might be hiding some serious flaws. Take time to check it more carefully and question anything that seems out of kilter. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Finish up those lingering tasks so that you can then arrange to spend some time in quiet reflection. This will go a long way in restoring both your physical and spiritual energies. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A family situation could heat up and boil over unless you deal with it as soon as possible. Try to persuade other family members to work with you to help cool things down. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Cheer up, Kitty Cat! That low feeling will begin to ebb by midweek, and you should be back in the social swirl in time for the weekend. A longpostponed deal could be starting up again. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Going too fast and too far on too little knowledge could be risky. Best to slow down and check for any gaps in your information. It’s what you don’t know that could hurt you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Trying to make peace among quarreling family members, friends or colleagues can be tough. Expect some resistance, maybe even some expressions of resentment. But stay with it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Changing your mind doesn’t have to be a problem once you realize that you might have good and sufficient cause to do so. Make your explanations clear and complete. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unkept promise can be irksome and easily raise the Archer’s ire. But instead of getting into a confrontation, take time to check why someone you relied on came up short. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A new workplace distraction creates an unnecessary delay. The sooner you deal with it, the better for all concerned. A personal matter also should be attended to as soon as possible. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Once again, the Aquarian’s gift for applying both practical and creative methods to resolve a situation makes all the difference. Personal relationships thrive during the weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A relationship appears to be losing its oncestrong appeal for reasons that might be different from what you think. An open and honest talk could lead to some surprising revelations. BORN THIS WEEK: Your life is bound by your belief that character counts more than anything else. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Breast cancer is a formidable foe. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 627,000 women lost their lives to breast cancer in 2018. But women are not helpless in the fight against breast cancer, as the WHO notes early detection is critical and could potentially save thousands of lives each year. A proactive approach is a key component of protecting oneself against breast cancer. Many breast cancer symptoms are invisible and not noticeable without a professional cancer screenings, but women can keep an eye out for certain signs of breast cancer they might be able to detect on their own. Monthly self-exams can help women more easily identify changes in their breasts. During such self-exams, women can look for the following signs and symptoms and are advised to report any abnormalities they discover to their physicians immediately.

• Changes in how the breast or nipple feels: Nipple tenderness or a lump or thickening in or near the breast or underarm could indicate the presence of breast cancer. Some women may notice changes in the skin texture or an enlargement of the pores in the skin of their breast. In many instances, skin texture has been described as being similar to the texture of an orange peel. Lumps in the breast also may indicate breast cancer, though not all lumps are cancerous.

• Change in appearance of the breast or nipple: Unexplained changes in the size or shape of the breast; dimpling anywhere on the breast; unexplained swelling or shrinking of the breast, particularly when the shrinking or swelling is exclusive to one side only; and a nipple that is turned slightly inward or inverted are some signs and symptoms of breast cancer that can affect the appearance of the breast or nipple. It is common for women’s breasts to be asymmetrical, but sudden asymmetry should be brought to the attention of a physician. • Discharge from the nipple: Any discharge from the nipple, but particularly a clear or bloody discharge, could be a sign of breast cancer. A milky discharge when they are not breastfeeding is not linked to breast cancer but should be discussed with a physician. Learning to recognize the signs and symptoms of breast cancer can increase the likelihood of early diagnosis, which greatly improves women’s chances of surviving this disease. Page 28

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Oct. 4, 1918, German Chancellor Max von Baden sends a telegraph message to President Woodrow Wilson requesting an armistice between Germany and the Allied powers in World War I. After a difficult month of negotiations, World War I came to an end on Nov. 11, 1918.

Pros and cons of joint replacement surgery To people outside the medical field, joint replacement surgery might sound like a solution that’s considered only after all other options have been exhausted. But joint replacement surgery has become very common, even though some studies have suggested certain procedures are being performed unnecessarily. A 2014 study published in the journal Arthritis and Rheumatology found that one-third of patients who undergo knee replacement surgery may not be appropriate candidates for the procedure because their symptoms are not severe enough to merit aggressive intervention like surgery. The decision to undergo surgery is always a patient’s to make. Weighing some pros and cons of joint replacement surgery can help patients make the most informed decisions possible.

* On Oct. 6, 1961, President John F. Kennedy advises American families to build bomb shelters to protect themselves from atomic fallout in the event of a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union. One year later, the world hovered on the brink of nuclear war after the USSR placed nuclear missiles in Cuba. * On Oct. 5, 1978, Isaac Bashevis Singer wins the Nobel Prize for literature. Singer wrote about Jewish life in Poland and the United States. One of his stories, “Yentl,” was made into a movie directed by and starring Barbra Streisand in 1983.

Pros - The Cleveland Clinic notes that many patients who have undergone joint replacement surgeries have experienced dramatic improvement within a relatively short time after undergoing the surgery. Much of that improvement is related to pain, which for many people becomes overwhelming prior to surgery. Another benefit to joint replacement surgery is the recovery time. For example, the Cleveland Clinic notes that patients who have knee replacement surgery are usually standing and even moving the joint the day after their surgeries. Within six weeks, those same patients are typically walking comfortably with very little support. While each patient is different, any fears that joint replacement surgery will require patients to be immobile for months after surgery are unwarranted. Joint replacement surgery also can be a long-term solution, whereas the alternatives might not be. The Cleveland Clinic says that roughly 85 percent of knee implants will last 20 years, and that life expectancy figures will grow as technology advances. Cons - As beneficial as joint replacement surgery can be, it’s not without downsides. Cost is one such disadvantage. How much a patient pays for the surgery depends on his or her coverage, but AARP notes that the average knee replacement surgery costs $31,000. Such costs can be prohibitive for aging men and women who are no longer working. Another potential disadvantage to going under the knife, especially for those who are borderline candidates for replacement surgeries, is the likelihood that surgery won’t have a significant impact on quality of life. A 2017 study published in the journal BMJ found that knee replacement had minimal effects on quality of life, especially for patients whose arthritis was not severe. Joint replacement surgeries are common. When deciding if surgery is their best option, patients should consider the pros and cons of going under the knife before making their final choice. Author Honors Dansville’s Rich WWII History in Locally Printed Book By Amanda Dudek

W

WII: it touched the lives of families all across the United States, including those in Dansville, New York. Dansville Area Historical Society Museum Curator David Gilbert hopes to connect readers to WWII history and its impact on everyday life in his latest book, Dansville War Diary: A Chronicle of Dansville, New York During World War II. Dansville War Diary follows each month of WWII through the eyes of a hypothetical Dansville diarist and includes a paragraph of global WWII events before focusing on coinciding events in Dansville specifically. “These people lived lives that none of us today can relate to very much,” explained Gilbert. “Imagine if you were told you cannot go out and buy particular things today,” he added, referring to shortages and rationings. “In December of 1942, a year into the war, there was a whole list of things people could no longer get,” said Gilbert. “Things made from metal were being diverted for items like tanks and planes. Tires were even harder to come by because all of the islands where rubber came from were held David Gilbert with his latest book, Dansville War by the Japanese. Diary: A Chronicle of Dansville, New York During Extra tires had to World War II be turned in to be diverted for things like planes and jeeps. Automobile production stopped cold. You could not go and buy a new car for four years.” Food items were restricted. “You might get half a pound of coffee a month and a bag of sugar,” said Gilbert. “That doesn’t go far if you are baking or want sugar in your coffee. Canned fruits, vegetables and juices were sent to the troops. Meat and butter were restricted. Substitutes like margarine, cottage cheese and macaroni and cheese gained popularity.” The economy was impacted, too. “Foster Wheeler had something going on every hour of every day,” explained Gilbert. “About 1,500 people worked there making boilers for naval vessels. Dansville’s airfield also became very important for training pilots during the war, expanding its runways to accommodate the planes.” Volunteerism was at an all-time high. “People worked at the Red Cross putting together bandages and knitted material for soldiers and war refugees. It had around 1,000 members, more than ever before or since. People devoted their entire lives to getting the war over as soon as possible and getting their loved ones back.” Dansville’s most valuable contribution to the war effort was its soldiers. “Hundreds of people enlisted,” Gilbert stated. “There was an honor roll in the middle of Main Street, and they would put the names of every person who was in the service on that roll. By the end of the war, there were over 800 names. Dansville’s population was only about 5,000; that is a huge portion. Virtually every family in Dansville had a loved one in the war.” Local soldiers who lost their lives in WWII are respectfully listed. “I was inspired by a documentary on WWII by Ken Burns,” said Gilbert. “In it, Burns focused on three or four places in the United States and told the story of the war through those places and how the war affected them specifically. I wanted to do the same for Dansville. I

wanted people to know what Dansville was like then and what it was like to lose someone in the war.” Gilbert was also inspired by personal connections to WWII. “A woman who sings in the choir at my church was among the first females enlisted in the Marines,” he declared. “My mother, who was 5-years-old when the war started, remembers picking milkweed pods in her backyard. The pods were used to stuff life preservers.” So, Gilbert began scouring the two weekly newspapers which had been active in Dansville throughout WWII. “That’s over 400 newspaper issues!” he exclaimed. “I included things like newspaper articles, notices, letters from soldiers, the Foster Wheeler newsletter and photos.” “Collecting photographs wasn’t as easy as I had hoped,” recalled Gilbert. “Film was among the many shortages of the war. The Dansville Area Historical Society (DAHS) and I had to scrounge for photos, including those of women working at Foster Wheeler - our local ‘Rosy the Riveters’ - and our cover photo of a scrap drive.” The DAHS then brought Gilbert’s manuscript to Penny Lane Printing in Avon. “Penny Lane had done a successful reprint on another book for us, so we approached them with this new book,” said Gerri Waight, DAHS President. “They did a wonderful job putting it together and designing the cover for us.” Gilbert agreed, adding: “When I saw a proof copy of the cover, I was just blown away. That’s outstanding.” Gilbert hinted that he may have several other historical projects in the works, many involving Dansville. For more info, visit www.dansvilleareahistoricalsociety.wordpress.com. All season, my neighbor has selflessly mowed the lawn at the home I rent. It was however habitat to pollinators, filled with butterflies and bees to name but two, who foraged there. What was destroyed was nearly two miles of habitat. Now, it and they are gone. For what reason? When will we stop being so focused on what gives us a sense of satisfaction, our need for making things “neat and tidy” in the landscape, that we destroy others in the process? When will we stop going our merry way without any thought to our impact on other lives?

I enjoy reading the Rants, especially those about poor restaurant service. However, while venting may make you feel better, a post about an unnamed restaurant in an unnamed city has no effect. Did you complain to the manager? Did you contact corporate? That gets results. Some of my friends cry, “But I don’t want anyone to lose their job!” Baloney! If the servers have such disdain for their customers, they don’t belong in the service industry. The position will then go to someone who truly needs it and will do a wonderful job. My question is simple: why tailgate before passing? Whether in a legal passing zone or illegally over a double solid yellow line, it’s always the same. Someone is right on my bumper! There are many reasons someone could hit their brakes. Please look further than the tip of your nose or the car’s bumper in front of it.

THE BIBLE SAYS: "Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward. Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool." (Isaiah 1:4, 18) "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon." (Isaiah 55:7) "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded." ( James 4:8) "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (I John 1:9) For further help, write: Burke Hill Bible Church, P. O. “When you need it done right, call Do Rite!” GARDENING IN AUTUMN Autumn is gardening season. That statement may not seem right to those who think of the spring as the peak time to care for lawns and gardens. However, autumn is an ideal time to get into the garden and ensure that flowers, trees and garden beds will over-winter successfully. A number of things make autumn a prime gardening season. The cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat. In addition, soil harbors a lot of residual warmth in autumn. Also, the colder temperatures haven’t yet arrived in autumn, nor have the leaves completely fallen, making fall a prime time to assess what’s already in the landscape, what needs pruning back and where to address planting for next year.

SAFELY REMOVING FALLEN LEAVES Use proper raking form. Much like snow shoveling, one should emphasize proper posture when raking, with legs slightly bent and weight distributed evenly. Hold the rake handle close to the body and keep one hand near the top of the rake for better leverage.

MAKE FALL CLEAN-UP ECO-FRIENDLY Rake leaves sensibly Power blowers and mulchers make fast work of leaves, but at the expense of the environment. Gas-powered devices discharge fuel exhaust into the air, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions. Instead, reap the benefits of peace and quiet as well as exercise from manual raking. While raking, do not feel the need to remove every leaf. A certain amount of organic matter can be beneficial to the soil and even insulate the lawn somewhat. A leftover leaf here or there also may provide protection for insects and small animals. For example, many native bees spend the winter in tunnels in the ground, cracks in mortar, holes in dead wood, or within hollow stems, and they need lawn and garden litter to survive.

Laurie was born in Hamlin, New York and graduated from Brockport High School in 1945. She was the eleventh child of George and Carrie Rath. She worked at Duffy Motts in Hamlin and The Prudential Insurance Company in Brockport. She married her perfect match, Art Schultz, on September 10th, 1949 at St. John’s Lutheran Church where she was baptised and was a member. She began married life on the Marine Corps base at Quantico where Art was stationed and she worked as a secretary. They eventually moved back to Hamlin and later to Leicester where they raised their seven children. Their retirement years were spent in Grove at “The Cabin” where they lived until 2003 when they moved in with Shellie and her family in Livonia. Besides raising her children, Laurie was a Den Mother, Sunday School Teacher, SUNY Brockport Librarian, St. John’s School Room Mother, Charter Member of the Hamlin VFW’s Ladies Auxiliary, part-time Legal Secretary for Mr. Butterfield in Brockport, full-time Legal Secretary for Barrett Quirk in Geneseo, Champion line worker, babysitter, member of Genesee Valley Rotary Camp Kitchen Staff and Teacher’s Aide at Dalton Elementary School. Laurie was a woman of great faith and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Angelica and Epiphany Lutheran Church in East Avon. She was an avid reader of the Bible and was always praying for or looking for ways to help others. Laurie was known for her great cooking and baking. She was especially famous for her desserts of cream puffs, pastries, pies and cookies. The grandkids remember her for her smiley toast. She liked to sew, knit, draw and paint. She enjoyed games, especially Euchre and BINGO. The Schultz Family would like to thank everyone for their love, prayers and support during this difficult time. We especially want to thank Livingston County Hospice (Tami Couburn and Karrie) who made it possible for us to carry out her wish to leave this earth peacefully in her home. We are also thankful for her aides Paula Murphy and her “Pal Val” Valeria Biracre. Thanks also to the medical professionals who helped along the way, especially Dr. Aguirre’s office. Laurie will be remembered as a positive, happy, funny, strong woman who was a privilege to know.

“More people are flattered into virtue than are bullied out of vice....” ~ Robert Smith Surtees It is probably true that very few saintly people got that way entirely as a matter of their own choice. They wanted the approval of their peers (don’t we all?) and so they conducted their lives in a way such as to win approval. They were “flattered” into virtue. On the other hand, few people have ever been persuaded to give up bad habits by threats..... “bullied” out of vice. The moral here, if one may be drawn, is that most of us do what is expected of us. We can best inspire others by having high expectations. Every adult, who might some day be required to make funeral arrangements, should be fully informed before the need arises. We are here to answer your questions and to offer advice, without obligation.

Family and friends may call on Friday, October 4th, from 4-7pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 20A, Livonia, NY. A Service to Celebrate Laurie’s Life will be held at 10am on Saturday, October 5th, at the Lutheran Church of Epiphany, 6050 E. Avon Lima Road, Avon, NY 14414. Burial St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Angelica, NY. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Livingston County Hospice, 2 Murray Hill Drive, Mt. Morris, NY 14510, Lutheran Church of Epiphany at the address above, or the Genesee Valley Rotary Camp, C/O Ernie Wiard, 15 Hal-Bar Road, Avon, NY 14414.

* On Sept. 7, 1813, the United States gets its nickname, Uncle Sam, when a newspaper picks up on the story of Samuel Wilson, a meat packer who supplied barrels of beef to the United States Army. TIPS TO HELP MEN LOOK THEIR BEST: Maintain your beard. The beard boom continues, but men who want to look sharp and well-groomed should make an effort to trim any wild facial hair they may have. Beard combs are designed to minimize damage to facial hair when used and can help to smooth facial hair that can appear unkempt. Some barbers even specialize in grooming beards, which can be helpful for men who are short on time or those with especially long beards that could use a little love and attention.

If you are diagnosed with breast cancer, ask questions. Ask about all treatment options for your specific tumor type. Ask about costs and side effects of treatments. Ask how and why a particular treatment option has been recommended for YOU. Compiled by the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester

Five Ways To A Better Move (NAPS)—The next time you’re among the estimated 40 million Americans a year who move into a new home, heeding these five hints can help you stress less: 1. Know what’s happening when. Make a list of everything you need to do and when you need to do it. It should include budgeting, decluttering, hiring movers, buying supplies, and updating medical and financial records. 2. Keep all your critical move-related names, phone numbers and addresses in one document. You may want to store them in your smartphone and have a hard copy. Be sure you can easily access your moving contract, real estate and mortgage documents, as well as information you may need about utilities, banks and schools. 3. Have a first-night box. Once you’re in your new home, you don’t want to have to hunt for such things as box cutters, tools, device chargers, bed linens, shower curtains, toiletries—and the coffeepot. 4. Stay connected to what matters most—family, friends, Internet, Wi-Fi and TV. Arrange your services in advance of your move at CableMover.com. 5. Get help. For a one-stop, customizable way to stay organized, there’s the Moving Guide from CableMover, downloadable at www.cablemover.com.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson “My dresser came with a glass panel that sits on top to protect the surface, but I didn’t like the look of it and just use a table runner across the top. Well, my daughter likes to play with slime (made from glue and other materials), and the glass is the perfect size when set on a table to make a protected, defined work surface. It’s easy to clean up after and very portable. Even though it’s glass, it’s very sturdy.” -- C.H. in Illinois

Schedule a meeting for this purpose; do not make it an informal chat by the water cooler. Resist the urge to quit via email or text. Resigning requires face-toface communication. WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Squeeze in a midday workout. Numerous studies have shown the many benefits to daily exercise, but professionals may not know that exercise can help improve their productivity at the office. A 2005 study from researchers at the then-named Leeds Metropolitan University in England asked 200 workers to answer questions regarding their productivity on days when they exercised at lunchtime and days when they did not exercise. Sixty percent said their job performance, including their ability to meet deadlines and manage their time, improved by a considerable amount on the days when they exercised.
