Meet Josie! I am a mini-lab mix and Riley adopted me from Open Arms Rescue. I went to school to learn my manners and I know lots of tricks. I like to sit at the table, on a chair with my family, but I don’t steal any food! My favorite things to do are swimming and truck rides. Every afternoon I stare out the front window and wait for the yellow bus. I just love my kids!

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Lots of choices could make it difficult to select what is best for your needs. Avoid snap judgments. Take the time to check them all out to find the one that really meets your goals. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You could once again experience pressure from others who would like to see you move in another direction. But heed your Bovine instincts to stay on your own path. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking charge of a project that seems to be about to stall or collapse altogether could be a challenge. But once everyone knows what you expect of him or her, things should go smoothly. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Avoid the pressures of the upcoming holiday period by setting a time right now to discuss how to divide up the responsibility of helping a loved one come through a difficult period. LEO (July 23 to August 22) It’s not too early for all you Leonas and Leos to start making long-distance travel plans. The sooner you stop procrastinating and start deciding where, when and how you’re going, the better. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Someone you’ve known for years might disappoint you, or even make you feel you’ve been betrayed. But check the facts carefully before you make charges that could backfire on you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A holiday plan might need to be revised to accommodate an unexpected complication. Come up with an alternative arrangement as soon as possible to avoid more problems down the line. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Don’t accept halfway explanations for a situation that requires full disclosure. The more you know now, the better able you will be to handle any complications that might arise. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) The cooperation you relied upon might not be easy to get. Maybe there’s an information gap. See if everyone understands the situation. If not, be sure to offer a full explanation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Problems caused by that recent workplace distraction should soon be easing, allowing you to resume working at a less frantic pace. That personal matter also begins to ease up. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Changing your mind about a job decision isn’t easy for the usually committed Aquarian. But once you check it out, you’ll find facts you didn’t know before. And facts don’t lie. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your unique way of sizing up a situation gives you an edge in resolving that upsetting workplace problem. Stay on your current course regardless of any attempts to distract you. BORN THIS WEEK: You are emotionally attuned to what’s going on around you, and you easily pick up on people’s needs.
Emerging trends in crafting – Spring into green: Green hues and floral and foliage patterns for decorating will be popular this year. Anyone can liven up interior spaces with elements that borrow from nature, including leaf patterns and flowers.

Hallow een is certainly know n for the spooky decorations that adorn homes and for the creative costumes children put on to canvas the neighborhood. But for many youngsters, Hallow een is all about the candy. In just a few hours, trick-or-treaters can accumulate a substantial amount of assorted chocolates, confections and other sw eet treats. Once everyone has had their fill of their favorite items, candy often gets relegated to a giant bow l on the kitchen table, w here it beckons each resident w ho passes by. Rather than submitting to the call of the candy and sacrificing your dental health as a result, enterprising individuals can repurpose that leftover Hallow een candy.

GARDENING IN AUTUMN Autumn is gardening season. That statement may not seem right to those who think of the spring as the peak time to care for lawns and gardens. However, autumn is an ideal time to get into the garden and ensure that flowers, trees and garden beds will over-winter successfully. A number of things make autumn a prime gardening season. The cooler days of fall enable gardeners to spend ample time outdoors without the threat of blazing heat. In addition, soil harbors a lot of residual warmth in autumn. Also, the colder temperatures haven’t yet arrived in autumn, nor have the leaves completely fallen, making fall a prime time to assess what’s already in the landscape, what needs pruning back and where to address planting for next year.

Have fuel ready Homeowners who heat their homes with oil, wood or coal should make sure they have plenty of fuel on hand in advance of winter. Shortages can occur, and it may take some time for new fuel to arrive in the midst of a cold snap.
Landscaping
As a precaution, homeowners can rely on portable space heaters to fill in the heating gaps during freezing temperatures. Exercise extreme caution with these devices, turning them off when leaving the room and remembering to avoid overloading outlets.

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn filled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair mixes like Scotts® PatchMaster contain mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well.

GET YOUR HOME FALL- AND WINTER-READY One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches.

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees.
$10.88 per bag

Use shredded leaves as a lawn supplement. Pass a lawn mower over leaves left on the lawn to break them down into pieces too small to rake. This will help keep the lawn healthy throughout the winter without blocking out needed sunlight.

QUALITY GENEROSITY COMMUNITY It’s been an exciting year at the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant. Owners Steve Foster and Tim Adams, along with Head Chef William Burch, attended more than 285 events across New York State with their food trucks, over 100 more events than last year, including Washington, D.C. and Hershey, PA. Their food truck also attended the New York State Fair and were enthusiastically invited back next year. With mouth-watering, new offerings like their smoked prime rib Landmark sandwich, created and tested in their own kitchen, the Red Osier Landmark’s big, black trailer has become synonymous with quality. Some confuse the original Red Osier Landmark Restaurant with Red Osier food products. Found at the Lilac Festival, the Corn Hill Arts Festival, the AppleUmpkin Festival, the Rochester Airport, Frontier Field and grocery stores, Red Osier food products are not at all associated with the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant in Stafford. “If it is not the big, black food truck, it is not us, not our quality, not coming from our doors, not the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant,” declared Foster. Everything served at the Red Osier Landmark Restaurant and its trucks is made fresh every day from breads and rolls to mashed potatoes, desserts, sauces and even the salad. “You can tell the difference,” stated Head Chef William Burch. “We spend days smoking food. It’s all about quality.” Their approach is turning heads, winning an award for Best Food at the Genesee County Fair. November (Lovember) and December usher in the Red Osier Landmark’s roast beef by the pound and prime rib either finished or prepared and ready-to-cook. Drop off service is available for corporate parties, luncheons, Christmas parties and other events. The restaurant will also open on Thanksgiving at noon. “Book now! Availability fills quickly!” advised Adams, suggesting customers also book graduations and weddings for next year.

Foster and Adams also greatly value community involvement, offering two $1,500 BOCES vocational scholarships, one for culinary arts and the other for welding. “To outside communities, we are a dining destination,” shared Foster. “Locally, we are a destination because of what we do.” Adams and Foster received the United Way’s Knight in Shining Armor award for community work they have done this year. In September, the Red Osier Landmark participated in a fundraiser for Mission 22, which addresses Veteran suicide nationally, and Western New York Heroes which meets a broad spectrum of local Veteran needs. During November, the restaurant will team up with the Knights Closet at LeRoy High School and the LeRoy Food Pantry. “Bring in a full brown bag of groceries, for a $10 gift certificate,” said Foster. “In February, bring in a full brown bag of pet food and pet supplies for the Genesee County Animal Shelter to receive the same. It is not just humans we worry about!” Thanksgiving proceeds go to charity, as well. Christmas lights, over 2.5 million last year, will return to the Red Osier Landmark in mid-November, keeping the Stafford Lights tradition alive. “We like to have them on for as long as possible, including Thanksgiving,” said Adams. The restaurant will host its community days, featuring light displays, horse and carriage rides and Santa and Mrs. Claus at no charge on the first two Mondays in December. The restaurant cart will have sandwiches, chili, cookies and more available for purchase.

THE BIBLE SAYS: “Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.” (Amos 8:11,12) “But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” (Matthew 4:4) “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.” ( John 5:24, 45, 46) For further help, write: Burke Hill Bible Church, P. O. Cool autumn w eather and less sunlight are signals to certain trees that it is time to shed their leaves. A leafless tree is more capable of conserving energy and riding out the w inter successfully. Trees also shed their leaves during periods of drought or if they have produced too many leaves in the summer and need to conserve w ater.

PREPARE VEHICLES FOR HARSH WEATHER Visibility is key in hazardous weather conditions, and keeping the windshield clean is a priority. This means ensuring there is enough windshield wiper fluid in the car and that it is a product that will not freeze. Wiper blades can freeze and crack in the winter. Older blades may be more susceptible to damage. It’s a worthy investment to replace existing wiper blades at the start of each winter. When vehicles are parked, pull the wipers off of the windshield to safeguard them from sticking and cracking. CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Drive a vehicle with stop/ start technology. Stop/start systems, in which engines shut off automatically when drivers brake and restart automatically when the driver lifts his or her foot off the brake pedal, can make more efficient use of fuel. Once exclusive to hybrid cars, stop/start technology is now more widely available and can cut back on fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. That’s especially attractive to ecoconscious commuters who live in big cities where stop-andstart traffic is unavoidable. What’s more, many modern air conditioning compressors operate off electricity and not via a car’s engine, meaning vehicles with stop/start technology will stay cool in the summer even when the engine shuts off. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Adult Wary About Tonsillectomy
Topics include domestic violence and other related issues. • Mondays: 1-2:30pm Mt. Morris
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My doctor recommends a tonsillectomy based on the fact that I suffer from chronic strep. I am apprehensive about this surgery as an adult. What are the realistic risks of the surgery versus continuing to experience regular cases of strep throat? -- O.C.
Please call 658-3940 for specific location and for more information. Please visit our website at: chancesandchanges.org
• On Nov. 9, 1989, East German officials open the Berlin Wall, allowing free travel from East to West Berlin for the first time since 1961. The next day, celebrating Germans began to tear down one of the ugliest and most infamous symbols of the Cold War. The wall was built to keep a flood of refugees from fleeing Communist East Germany to the West.
ANSWER: Strep throat infections that are chronic (lasting more than three months) or recurrent are indications for tonsillectomy in adults; however, this is an uncommon surgery in adults, and there isn’t a lot of published data on the effectiveness of treatment. Some data shows that tonsillectomy does reduce incidence of infection, as would be expected. Other data shows improved quality of life and fewer missed work days. My own experience is limited to a handful of patients: All have had significant improvement in the number and severity of infections. On the other hand, the surgery itself is unpleasant, and that’s putting it mildly. There is a significant risk of major complications (perhaps around 3%). One patient told me that the first two weeks after surgery were horrendous, but gradually improved over time. As always, it’s a balance between benefits and risks of surgery. But it’s a difficult enough surgery that you are wise to be apprehensive, and I would recommend surgical consultation only if your symptoms were severe enough and significantly impact your life. ***
EXCELLENCE IN SURGICAL CARE Need An Extraction? One Tooth, Many Teeth? Wisdom Teeth? Anxious About Having Surgery? Go No Further! Dr. Andrew M. Steinhilber is a board certified Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon with 6 years of surgical residency training and over 20 years of surgical practice. He has extensive training in extractions of all types, including wisdom teeth and Dental Implants. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons are the only specialists properly qualified and trained in Oral, IV and General Anesthesia. No weekend learner courses here! He will be very happy to educate you about your treatment and his staff is also nationally certified and will make you feel more than comfortable.
Andrew M. Steinhilber, D.D.S., M.S.D.
DEAR DR. ROACH: Three years ago, my mother was prescribed 50,000 IU of vitamin D per week. I read that this dose can lead to serious complications if continued for more than a month or two. How common is it for someone to be on such a high dose for three years? Should my mother insist that her doctor take her off this medication? -- L.H. ANSWER: Fifty thousand units a week is frequently given for eight to 12 weeks in people with significant deficiency in vitamin D, and people often then are switched to a daily dose of 1,000 to 2,000 IU. However, some people prefer a weekly dose, and 10,000 to 20,000 would be the usual dose. Perhaps 10% to 20% of the time, in my experience, people do need higher doses, and 50,000 is not unheard of (some people have a genetic condition requiring high doses). However, this dosing should be guided by blood levels, and I certainly would feel better knowing that your mother has had her level measured if continuing this high dose. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter gives her 3-year-old daughter

fizzy water daily. All her water bottles and sippy cups are filled with some kind of carbonated water. My granddaughter’s appetite seems to have decreased. Could this be caused by the fizzy water? Is it harmful to her stomach? -- L.B. ANSWER: I don’t recommend carbonated water for babies or small children. The dissolved gas in the water can distend the stomach, causing cramps, and that gas has to come out, meaning burps or flatulence. The sense of distention in the stomach might be causing her to eat less as well. Stick to tap or bottled water in reasonable amounts. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor.

Tying a shoelace, for example, seems totally impossible to the tiny tot who has not yet mastered the art. Adults, who have gone through this stage themselves, will smile and realize that soon the solution will be found and the “hopeless” situation resolved. The frightening situations that we all must face from time to time may seem to be utterly hopeless. If we despair and stop trying, there is no hope. If we persist, hoping for an answer, our problems will prove to be far from hopeless.

THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning can help control costs. Preplanning often includes men and women setting aside money for their funerals before they pass away. Knowing that a funeral, which can be expensive, is already paid for can provide additional peace of mind. Instead of worrying that their relatives will be forced to handle the burden of financing their funerals, men and women who preplan can rest easy knowing their insurance money and life’s savings will be going to their surviving loved ones and not toward paying for funeral expenses.

Survived by his beloved wife (Bride) of 57 years; Beverly Hogan, his children; Carl Hogan Jr. (Kimberly Millett), Kelly Hogan (Ken Alexander), his grandchildren; Justin (Emily) Dean, Joshua Dean, Ashley Dean, his greatgranddaughters; Madisyn Gresty, Trinity Dean, his siblings; Fred (Carol) Miller, Jack (Debbie) Hogan, Bill (Melissa) Hogan, Mike Hogan, Dave (Brenda) Hogan, Debbie (Dennis) Slocum, Steve (Cindy) Hogan, and Becky Hogan, along with his many nieces, nephews and cousins. Carl was looking forward to meeting his great-grandson, Conor Dean ( Jan. 2020). If you knew Carl you knew he was an Irish farm boy at heart who dedicated his life to his family, his community, and his country. He spent 35 years serving this country with nothing but pride and honor. While serving in the US Army he was also a volunteer fireman for both East Avon and Henrietta, and Scout master while Carl Jr was a boy scout. Nothing mattered more to him than his family and friends, except maybe a cold pint of Guinness. Ask any of his kids or grand-kids and they’d tell you how all of their friends called him their dad/grandpa. He was like Santa Clause for the neighborhood, only much cooler.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Medicare Enrollment Season Is Coming: 5 Tips To Make Sure You’re In The Right Plan (NAPS)—Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 to December 7, 2019. This is your yearly chance to shop for insurance coverage that best meets your needs. People covered by Medicare will have even more plans with a host of new benefits to choose from for 2020. Here are five things to keep in mind for Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period. 1. Review your 2020 coverage options. Medicare Advantage plan details change each year, so the policy that was the least expensive or best match for you in 2019 may not be right for 2020. Changes to premiums, deductibles and co-pays can be costly. A recent eHealth analysis of people using eHealthMedicare.com to compare Medicare plans found that fewer than one in ten were enrolled in the lowest cost plan for their personal prescription drug regimen. Those who switched to their optimal drug plan stood to save an average of $900 per year.
• On Nov. 4, 1979, student followers of the Ayatollah Khomeini send shock waves across America when they storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran. The radical Islamic fundamentalists took 90 hostages. • On Nov. 5, 1968, in one of the closest elections in U.S. history, Republican challenger Richard Nixon defeats Vice President Hubert Humphrey. Because of third-party candidate George Wallace, neither Nixon nor Humphrey received 50% of the vote. • On Nov. 6, 1528, the Spanish conquistador Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca is shipwrecked on a low sandy island off the coast of Texas. Starving, dehydrated and desperate, he is the first European to set foot on the soil of the future Lone Star state.
2. Look out for drug coverage changes. It’s common for insurance companies to tweak their list of covered drug and prices. That can mean higher out-of-pocket expenses. Check to make sure that the medications you need are still covered by your plan in 2020, and pay close attention to any special rules you need to follow to get the most coverage for your medications. Online tools, including eHealthMedicare.com’s prescription drug coverage comparison tool, can help you find the best option for 2020. 3. Make sure your doctors are still covered. The doctors and hospitals that participate in your Medicare plan’s network often change each year as well. Make sure your preferred providers are covered under your current plan or any new plan that interests you. The amount you’ll pay when you get care from a doctor or hospital that does not participate with your plan will be higher than what you’ll pay if you stay within your plan’s network, and some health insurers won’t cover out-of-network providers at all, except in an emergency. 4. Compare benefits. Along with price comparisons, be sure to review the full range of services and benefits offered by competing Medicare plans. These can include everything from preferred pharmacy and mail-order prescription discounts to dental, vision, hearing and even fitness benefits. And for 2020, many Medicare Advantage plans will offer supplemental benefits that provide additional assistance to people with chronic illness, such as non-emergency transportation, virtual medical visits, caregiver support, nutritional counseling and meal delivery, and air conditioning, among others. 5. Work with a professional to understand your choices. To make sure you’re viewing a wide range of plans available on the market, work with an expert in Medicare products that represents more than just one insurance company. It doesn’t cost anything extra. A licensed agent can help you understand and make sense of all your options and select coverage that best matches your needs, budget, and lifestyle. The expert help of a licensed insurance agent can help you get the best medicare policy for your needs. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

I must admit that I’m just a casual fan of baseball, but when the World Series rolls around, I like to tune in. The announcers do such a good job of acquainting you with the players, their stories and the importance of the game. Game one of this year’s series, the Washington Nationals vs. the Houston Astros, was a terrific game eventually won by the Nationals - a bit of an upset in Houston’s home field and against one of the best pitchers in baseball: Gerrit Cole. The best part was how immersed I became in the game, didn’t once look at my smart (life sucking device) phone and thoroughly enjoyed the
4-hour feat. Play ball!
It was a stupid thing to do. My light turned green, and I started making a left. You peeled out of that restaurant like a bat of you know where with no turn signal on. You were lucky I was able to bring the car to a stop halfway out as my classic car is not made with power brakes. It was a stupid, dangerous thing to do. I was tempted to backtrack and tell the police in the grocery store parking lot who were attending to a fender bender.
I had a test taken and the doctor’s office said the results should be in on Friday. I told them I would call on Monday. So, on Monday I called three times and couldn’t get an answer. The doctor’s office can’t keep any help. There is always someone new that has no answers. I wonder why they can’t keep any help. My time is worth something also. They think just because they are doctors, they are above everyone else.
I’m receiving numerous calls for solicitors everyday…at all hours! They need to stop! The only reason I answer the phone is because it may be the hospital calling. I have a sick brother in Hospice. I’m so aggravated by these annoying solicitors!
Please tell the [local] college and high school students who run down [local] route and onto [local] roads to be more careful. They are running, sometimes 4 wide, into the lanes of traffic on very busy roads. Once they are on [local], it is very
hard to see them in the shadows of the tree line on both sides. Yesterday, they were running all the way in my lane of traffic and with oncoming traffic, and there was nowhere to move. They are not wearing highly visible clothing, and you can’t see them until you are right upon them. I’m sure in their mind, the rest of us will automatically just know they are there and to move out of their way, but with other vehicles included in the mix, along with weather conditions, they need to be more cautious.
Thank you, a million times, to the young lady who stopped in the middle of North Street of LeRoy for my puppy that got out of the door and ran into the road. She beeped so he would move, but he is deaf, so he continued to stand there. She was very patient. I am so grateful for caring people like you!

My family and I want to thank the person driving the dark colored pick-up that stopped oncoming traffic in front of the Mt Pleasant Cemetery on 10/23! We were just entering the cemetery with several cars behind us. That is a tricky entrance at best with just one vehicle, let alone a whole line! You honored us, and kept us all safe as well, by this simple act of respect! God bless you! We love the Genesee Valley Penny Saver! Look forward to getting it every week. Recently, we called “The Tree Service” after seeing

We cannot say enough good things about “The Tree Service!” They kept us informed of weather delays and, when the guys came, they were the nicest, most personable and professional men. Polite, eager to please, and they did great work! We hope they liked the cookies, but more than that, we hope they know just how much they were appreciated and that we recommend them most highly. Thank you!
why isn’t there more of a crackdown on advertising of alcoholic beverages? I don’t contribute to fundraisers that feature alcoholic beverages to those attending. Who will join me in boycotting fundraisers from these places? There are better places that need our financial help that don’t make alcoholic beverages available. So, E-cigs are banned due to 6 deaths.... When do they take our motorcycles?

Village Homeowners: Is it possible that our properties will be listed as “Historical Resources?” Many village homes are being referred to as “Historic Resources” by the Mayor and Village Board. When will the homeowners need to abide by the preservation standards? (see nps.gov/preservation standards). Would failure to comply result in fines and imprisonment? (see Model Landmarks Preservation local law page 23) To the Mayor: Please answer in the Penny Saver, there are a lot of us on the listing.

Red Cross “Sound the Alarm” Initiative Offers Free Smoke Detectors Special Thanks to the American Red Cross & The Town of Brighton
D
id you know that if a fire starts in your home, you may have just two minutes to escape? Smoke detectors save lives, not only with warning, but several, well-placed smoke detectors alert earlier. Those extra minutes could mean the difference between life and death. The American Red Cross, in partnership with local fire departments, community groups and corporate supporters, has launched an initiative called Sound the Alarm to reduce the number of deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25% over the next five years. Livingston County fire departments alone received over 2,000 calls in 2018, although not all of them were regarding fires or suspected fires. Having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half. Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. Every home should have a smoke detector outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. On floors without bedrooms, detectors should be installed in or near living areas, such as dens, living rooms, or family rooms. For extra protection, NFPA suggests installing detectors in dining rooms, furnace rooms, utility rooms and hallways. Don’t install a smoke detector too near a window, door, or forced-air register where drafts could interfere with the detector’s operation. Test all your smoke detectors monthly and install new batteries at least once a year. A good reminder is to change them when you change your clocks in the spring or fall: change your clock, change your battery. Smoke detectors don’t last forever. Replace any smoke detector that is more than 10 years old. As part of the Home Fire Campaign, the Red Cross can install up to three free smoke alarms in your home! If you are interested, please fill out the information in the box below and mail it to the American Red Cross, 625 John Street, Henrietta, NY 14586 or call (585) 2414390. You may also make your request online at www.redcross.org. Upon receiving your request, we will reach out to you as soon as possible to get you set up for an appointment. Want to volunteer? Go to redcross.org/volunteer or email wcny.vsrecruitment@redcross.org!
HEAT YOUR HOME SAFELY TIPS - The American Red Cross 1. All heating equipment needs at least three feet of space. Keep away children, pets and things that can burn, such as paper, matches, bedding, furniture, clothing, carpets and rugs. 2. If you must use a space heater, look for a model that shuts off automatically if the heater falls over. Place it on a level, hard and nonflammable surface, such as a ceramic tile floor. Don’t place it on rugs and carpets, or near bedding and drapes. 3. Plug power cords directly into outlets and never into an extension cord. 4. Turn off portable space heaters every time you leave the room or go to sleep. 5. Have wood and coal stoves, fireplaces and chimneys inspected annually by a professional and cleaned if necessary. 6. Never leave a fire in the fireplace unattended. Use a glass or metal fire screen to keep fire and embers in the fireplace. 7. Never use a cooking range or oven to heat your home. 8. Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odorless and silent killer that claims hundreds of lives each year in the U.S. When a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, treat the alert as a real emergency each time. 9. Know the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning, which include headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, vomiting, sleepiness and confusion. 10. If you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning, quickly get to fresh air, and then call 9-1-1.

PROTECTING YOUR VISION FROM DIABETES
Precision surgery. Where YOU ARE. The UR Medicine General Surgery Team. Offering minimally invasive procedures at hospitals near you. To learn more, visit us at: regionalsurgery.urmc.edu
(NAPSI)—Diabetes kills more Americans each year than AIDS and breast cancer combined— and can cause serious problems throughout the body. According to the National Eye Institute, eye health, for example, can become critically compromised. Around 30.3 million Americans, or 9.4 percent of the population, are living with diabetes, with about 1.5 million more being diagnosed every year. The longer someone has diabetes, the greater his or her chances are of developing diabetic retinopathy, or damage to the blood vessels in the retina. According to the National Eye Institute, between 40 and 45 percent of people diagnosed with diabetes have some degree of diabetic retinopathy. While being overweight and leading a sedentary lifestyle are certainly linked to diabetes, social and environmental factors such as poverty, stress, and lack of safe housing and access to a healthy diet can also compromise your health and ultimately contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes. According to America’s Health Insurance Plans, addressing these social determinants of health has become a top priority for Medicaid programs. “We encourage our members with diabetes to have regular eye exams to rule out complications,” said Dr. Andrea Gelzer, senior vice president of medical affairs at AmeriHealth Caritas, a national leader in Medicaid managed care and other health care solutions for those most in need. “We educate our members so they understand that living a healthy lifestyle, controlling their blood sugar and having regular eye exams can help save their vision.”
Jones Memorial Hospital Noyes Memorial Hospital St. James Hospital
Simple steps can help mitigate the effects of diabetes and may potentially delay complications from diabetic eye disease, including controlling your blood sugar and blood pressure, monitoring your cholesterol, seeing your doctor regularly, and having a dilated eye exam at least once per year—or more if recommended by your eye care professional. AmeriHealth Caritas is part of the Independence Health Group in partnership with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and one of the nation’s leaders in health care solutions for those most in need. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.
