FRONT END

DID YOU KNOW? The Ford Motor Company’s Model T was offered in several styles, not unlike how vehicles of today are offered in various models. Among the Model T styles available was a two-seat runabout, which can be considered a precursor to the coupe style popular today, and a seven-seat town car, which might be considered an ancestor of today’s SUV, at least with regard to passenger capacity. While prospective Model T drivers had some options when choosing which Model T they wanted to purchase, between 1913 and 1925 the car was produced only in black. The Model T engine was a 4-cylinder engine that generated 20 horsepower. To put that latter figure into perspective, many of today’s riding lawn mowers are 20 horsepower, and some commercial lawn riding mowers provide as much as 40 horsepower. While car dealers might not sell too many cars featuring 4-cylinder, 20 horsepower engines today, historical estimates suggest that more than 15 million Model T’s were built and sold between 1908 and 1927, the last year the car was produced.

CONSERVE FUEL DURING YOUR DAILY COMMUTE Drive a vehicle with stop/ start technology. Stop/start systems, in which engines shut off automatically when drivers brake and restart automatically when the driver lifts his or her foot off the brake pedal, can make more efficient use of fuel. Once exclusive to hybrid cars, stop/start technology is now more widely available and can cut back on fuel consumption and vehicle emissions. That’s especially attractive to ecoconscious commuters who live in big cities where stop-andstart traffic is unavoidable. What’s more, many modern air conditioning compressors operate off electricity and not via a car’s engine, meaning vehicles with stop/start technology will stay cool in the summer even when the engine shuts off. I am honored to serve the people for the people of the Town of Conesus. I pledge to continue to serve with honesty, integrity and love for the people in this community.” Newly Elected Town of Conesus Supervisor Donald W. Wester STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver Up until the 1500s, the accepted way of dealing with a patient who was hemorrhaging was to cauterize the wound, often with boiling oil or red-hot irons. It was in the latter part of the 16th century that a French surgeon named Ambroise Pare began tying off the broken blood vessels with cord. That's pretty much what surgeons do today.

ARE POINSETTIAS POISONOUS? The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact. While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

Black Friday reinvented The retail industry started using the term “Black Friday” in the late 1980s. Spin doctors turned previously negative connotations into positive ones by associating the phrase with stores turning a profit and moving accounting ledgers from “red to black” thanks to big year-end sales. Retailers and consumers rallied around low-cost “doorbusters” and other discounted prices. Interestingly enough, according to the National Retail Federation, Black Friday really hasn’t been the most lucrative day for retailers over the years. In fact, greater profits and larger crowds are often seen on the last Saturday preceeding Christmas.

Winter may be beautiful, but it also can be hazardous. Taking precautions and using common sense help avoid dangerous situations.

the past five days, developed measles. She was vaccinated at 9 months and has been treated with antibiotics, Tylenol and vitamin A supplements. What concerns me is that she is now experiencing seizures, even without a fever. They are not grand mal seizures, but simple ones. They have me worried. What can I do? -- G.A. ANSWER: Measles remains a serious disease in many parts of the world, with 90,000 deaths reported in 2016. Even in industrialized nations, there have been outbreaks involving tens of thousands of people infected. Vitamin A supplementation may be of value in those who are deficient, and Tylenol can help keep the fever down, reducing the risk of febrile seizures. The antiviral drug ribavirin sometimes is used, though without clear evidence of effectiveness. Otherwise, there are no effective antibiotics or other treatments for measles. When seizures occur in a child with measles in absence of fever, it can indicate a complication called encephalitis -- inflammation of the brain. Children also may experience nausea and vomiting, and they usually have a headache. Confusion and sleepiness are other common symptoms. The diagnosis can be confirmed by an evaluation of the fluid around the brain, the cerebrospinal fluid, which is sampled via a needle inserted into the lower back. Confirmed encephalitis with measles is treated with steroids. This reduces the risk of permanent brain damage from the infection. Even so, 25% of children may be left with some impairment, including epilepsy. Unfortunately, vaccination at 9 months is not adequate protection. Children’s immune systems may not be able to fully respond to the vaccine so early. Children are recommended to have the measles vaccine at 12-15 months and again at 4 to 6 years in the United States. In countries where risk of measles mortality remains high, children are vaccinated at 9 months, then again at 15-18 months. During an outbreak, a dose may be given as early as 6 months old, in addition to the other two doses.

tropical vacation and am exposed to lasting sun. These blisters develop on my lower lip. I have tried sunscreen, but nothing has worked. On my most recent trip, the blisters appeared on the final day and took nearly three weeks to heal. It’s painful and horribly embarrassing. Is there anything I can do? Should I see my dermatologist? -- S.A. ANSWER: The sun can cause many kinds of skin reactions. In some people, the light itself causes the problem (these reactions are called photodermatoses). In others, the sun causes a reaction in combination with exposure to a particular substance. Sometimes, it’s a fruit, especially limes. In people with blisters around the mouth, I think of mangoes, especially if you are enjoying them in the tropics. Some skin diseases just get worse in the sun: Lupus is the classic example, but there are many others (my textbook lists about 50, some quite rare). A dermatologist is indeed the person to see. In the meantime, wear sun-protective clothing on your next tropical vacation, and consider a blocking sunscreen like zinc oxide in the areas where the blistering has occurred in the past. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. hope he stays there a long time. It’s nice to have a local honest mechanic. Thank you so much for everything!

I want to thank a local business, Dansville Auto Mart, for all the hard work. Their mechanic, Dana, worked on my Malibu, told me what I truly needed to fix it, and didn’t try to sell me stuff I didn’t need. It’s so hard to find honest people anymore for jobs like that, and he fixed my car right and was professional. I Mixing drinking alcohol with shooting guns at a suicide-prevention fundraiser? That is not smart, not to mention dangerous! When will people find common sense again? People have died from just that combination: being impaired and shooting a gun! It is safer to have area carnivals to raise funds! This store relies on free donations to stay in business, yet when I dropped off two bags of items, the worker who was unloading items from her car was rude and screamed at me. Where is this attitude coming from? Without donations, the store would have to close, and people donating items should be thanked, not screamed at. That worker complained that she was old and frail GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

After cleaning off my truck from the first crazy snowfall of the year, I turned on my wipers only to have the driver’s side bust in half. I carefully drove across the street to the auto parts store where one gentleman delightfully opened the door for me. Bringing in my broken wiper blade to the sweet ladies behind the counter, the customer next to me told me that if I bought the wiper, he would put it on for me. I didn’t know this guy at all, and he obviously and could not carry in donations, even though she was unloading items from her car. Maybe she should check into a nursing home and stop working at the store if this is how she treats people bringing in donations. Try talking to the offending party. Tell the business owner you had poor service; leave a note for the neighbor; engage with the dog owner who isn’t cleaning up after their pet. The options are endless. For the record, grass is mowed 5’ back from the roadway to protect drivers and creatures who might come flying out of the field. There is no room for error when the view is blocked.

Avon Lioness Club My daughter recently went into [local store] in [local town], and she was told to leave because she was under 18. There’s not one sign posted inside or outside of the store. So, I sent her (Caucasian) friend into the store 20 minutes later, and she was never asked her age or to leave. In fact, she was greeted with open arms. Shame on the bitter, racist old lady who told my daughter she had to go. The world does not revolve around you. You’re not the only one dealing with obnoxious neighbors, inconsiderate drivers, ignored phone calls and emails, ungrateful people. What makes your time worth more than mine? Why do we feel that we deserve any more than the next

person? Things happen. Yes, people can be rude. People can be incredibly wonderful. Maybe there are extenuating circumstances surrounding their words and actions. Haven’t you ever made mistake, said or done the wrong thing? God made us all the same. We’re not above anyone else. Things happen to me, too. Something good happened in your day today. Let’s focus on that! This isn’t a rant or even a positive vibe, it’s a suggestion. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools.

A serving of turkey is only 161 calories and contains just four grams of fat, w hich is low in saturated fat.

The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students.

TRAVIS WESTER

This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On Nov. 30, 1939, the Soviet Red Army invades the tiny nation of Finland with 465,000 men and 1,000 aircraft. Helsinki was bombed, and 61 Finns were killed in an air raid, sparking fierce Finnish resistance. On Nov. 26, 1942, “Casablanca,” a World War II-era romantic drama starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, premieres in New York City. The Oscar-winning film featured a number of now-iconic quotes, including “Here’s looking at you, kid.” On Dec. 1, 1959, 12 nations sign the Antarctica Treaty, which bans military activity and weapons testing on that continent. It was the first arms-control agreement signed during the Cold War.

Seniors Have A Lot To Smile About (NAPS)—Healthy teeth and gums are an important part of overall well-being. However, as people age, they become more prone to gum disease and other oral health problems. With regular dental check-ups and proper care, your smile may never get old. Smile, California, the Medi-Cal Dental Program’s campaign to improve oral health among its members, wants seniors to know that they can see the dentist for an exam and cleaning once a year. This dental visit can help keep their gums and teeth healthy, strong and pain-free. “Medi-Cal Dental covers routine, preventive and restorative care for more than 13.5 million members in California. In January 2018, California Senate Bill 97 restored optional adult dental benefits for members ages 21 and older with full-scope dental coverage, making it easier for eligible seniors to receive free or low-cost dental care,” said Alani Jackson, Chief of the Medi-Cal Dental Services Division within the California Department of Health Care Services. Use of the Medi-Cal dental benefit is important because, according to the Centers for Disease Control, approximately one in five seniors lives with untreated tooth decay; and about 68 percent of adults age 65 or older have gum disease. To help keep your smile healthy and strong, the American Dental Association offers these additional tips: • See the dentist on a regular basis, even if you have dentures. • Brush and floss, or clean your dentures, daily. • Watch for changes in your mouth. Your risk for oral cancer increases as you age. If you see any changes in your mouth, it’s important to get them checked out by a dentist or doctor. • Talk to your dentist or doctor about dry mouth. Dry mouth can make it hard to eat, swallow, or talk. It can also lead to tooth decay or infection. • Practice healthy habits such as eating a balanced diet, limiting sugary foods and drinks, and avoiding cigarettes and other tobacco products. Visit SmileCalifornia.org to learn more about covered services and to find a dentist near you. Visit your dentist annually to keep your teeth and gums strong and healthy.

TOWN OF YORK SOLAR LAW Concerned Citizens of the Town of York would like to bring to the attention of all citizens within the town, the vision our Town Board has for our community’s future landscape. The Town Board is about to pass a law that would allow up to 28% or 8,748 acres of farmland to be covered with solar panels. The amount of land being made available for solar development isn’t the issue they are concerned about. They are proposing this law using a soil survey map, created with 100 year old data, to determine the number of acres and the locations that major solar farms can be placed. All farmland is not financially viable for solar development, therefore these additional restrictions being put on landowners are unnecessary and UNJUST. Also, utilizing this map, as an integral part of developing our solar law, does not reflect CURRENT land values or protect “PRIME” farmland as they claim. It also COINCIDENTALLY DOES NOT affect most land the BOARD or SOLAR COMMITTEE MEMBERS care about as OFF LIMITS to SOLAR development. It is NOT mandatory we use this map as several surrounding towns have implemented their solar zoning laws without using it in anyway. We urge all residents to review the minutes to the 10/10/2019 board meeting, the unapproved minutes from the 11/06/2019 solar public hearing and when available, the unapproved minutes to the 11/14/2019 board meeting. Please go to the Town’s website to view the map for the locations that would be available for large solar arrays vs the land that would be unapproved. All of these minutes are located on the town webpage http://www.yorkny. org/. The next scheduled Board meeting is 12/5/19 @ 7:30 p.m. Contact your town officials: Jerry Deming (Town Supervisor), Lynn Parnell (Deputy Supervisor), Council Members; Norm Gates, Frank Rose, and Amos Smith. Their contact information is located on the town webpage under Government, Town Board. It’s imperative we take action NOW, before it’s TOO LATE and York becomes home for the next 1000+ acre solar farm while unfairly denying developing rights to other landowners.

PREP-YOUR-PLACE POINTERS (NAPSI)—Many people may be surprised to learn that fall is actually the most affordable season for home prep and repair projects. There’s less demand, so homeowners enjoy breaks on equipment and services. An easy place to begin is at the window. Cracked and warped windows can often cause heat to escape. “Windows that produce a draft or feel cold on the inside should be replaced,” explains Richard Kasunic, a home repair expert with Window Nation, one of the country’s leading window replacement companies. Modern vinyl windows fit tightly to shield homes from wind, water infiltration and inclement weather overall. With that said, many homeowners have older windows and are often “heating the outside,” adds Kasunic. “On average, homeowners spend 40 percent of their utility expense dollars on heating and cooling,” he says. “But if new windows aren’t in this year’s home budget, you might want to pick up insulated curtains, window and door gap seals, and add draft snakes on windowsills.” He also suggests replacing the weather stripping around doors if you see any light around the edges. For less than $10, you can likely reduce electrical bills throughout the year. Beyond windows and doors, exterior outlets, plumbing and utility access, chimneys and walkways should be sealed for unwanted holes, says Kasunic. And homeowners should have their furnaces and roofs professionally cleaned and inspected. Finally, cover the water heater and change the furnace filter so your furnace doesn’t have to work as hard.

JJMROOFING@aol.com • www.jjmhomeremodel.com

If you are thinking of new windows, Kasunic agrees that this is the best time for both availability and price.

KEEP RODENTS OUT THIS W INTER M any people mistakenly believe pests should only be dealt w ith once inside a home. How ever, the best pest c ontrol is the preventative kind and can be accomplished by taking proactive steps to prevent pests from entering the home in the first place. Rodents, the most common w inter pests, invade nearly 21 million U.S. homes each w inter. Despite all the proper precautions, if rodents still find their w ay inside, they often leave clues of their presence. Droppings, one of the most visible signs, are most frequently found in kitc hen cabinets, along w alls, on top of w all studs or beams, near nests and in boxes, bags, old furniture and other objects. Gnaw marks and trac ks are other visible evidence of a rodent problem. Rodents w ill also sometimes reveal themselves through scurrying sounds.

THE HISTORY OF BLACK FRIDAY Shopping weekend evolves While Black Friday may have been the catalyst, in recent years shoppers have made the entire weekend of Black Friday a lucrative one for retailers. Many stores now open on Thanksgiving and extend sales through the entire weekend. Small Business Saturday and Sunday promote patronizing mom-and-pop stores. Cyber Monday emerged when online shopping became a popular way to grab deals, and it marks the close of the opening weekend of the holiday shopping season. In 2017, Black Friday weekend attracted 174 million shoppers who spent an average of $335.47, according to the NRF.

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY

Every Day! The Finger Lakes Region of New York has some of the most beautiful and charming villages anywhere in the United States, and local, independent businesses are their backbone. It is too easy to take local businesses for granted, only to feel disappointment when a local shop closes and empty storefronts multiply. The gradual disappearance of independent businesses means that more and more money is being sent elsewhere from local communities, and towns risk becoming mere filling stations for other destinations. But there is good news – you can change this trend! Some people commute out-of-town for work; however, few of us would like to travel as far for such things as dentist appointments, a dinner out, a movie or groceries. Your local independent business community is an economic ecosystem, and each purchase you make ripples through it, adding to its health as a whole.

The choice to preserve local communities has to be made from the wallet. Is it worth a little extra time and perhaps a few extra dollars to help independent businesses thrive? Yes! I say “perhaps a few extra dollars” because, if you are like me, you purchase at least a handful of impulse items whenever shopping in a big box store or online. What you save on impulse buys will likely offset any price differences! What a world of difference it makes to spend only a few more dollars a month locally! In fact, according to Independent We Stand, if Americans spent just $10 a month at locally-owned, independent businesses instead of national chains, over $9.3 billion* would be directly returned to local economies. Independent We Stand further claims that “if every family in the Rochester metro area spent just $10 a month with a locally-owned, independent business instead of a national chain, over $33,083,006* would be directly returned to the Rochester community. That means better schools, better roads, more support for police, fire and rescue departments and stronger local economies.” This holiday season, you can make a huge impact in the success of local independent businesses! Visit them on Small Business Saturday and all throughout the holidays. Linger, enjoy, purchase gifts (even for yourself!) and continue to support them year-round. Your purchases are gifts which keep on giving, keeping your community strong.

MAKE HOLIDAY SHOPPING EXCURSIONS SPECIAL As they fulfill the social obligations of the holiday season, many people find themselves spending less time at home. Consumer Reports notes that individuals spend a great deal of time shopping for gifts come the holiday season. Americans engage in 15 hours of shopping on average, with women spending twice as long as their male counterparts (20 hours versus 10). In addition, the average person devotes 10 or more hours to wrapping and returning gifts. Holiday shopping can monopolize people’s time away from home during the months of November and December, and some shoppers wonder how they become so disconnected from other activities, including family time, that they cherish throughout the rest of the year. One way to tackle holiday shopping without sacrificing time with family and friends is to make holiday shopping a social event.

Greetings at Thanksgiving

THE HISTORY OF BLACK FRIDAY “Black Friday” The term “black Friday” was originally associated with gold prices and manipulation on the part of speculators Jay Gould and James Fisk. This scandal occurred in September 1869. Commodity prices plummeted 50 percent as a result, and the term “black Friday” was coined to refer to that drop.

Hats off to our cherished friends and customers at Thanksgiving! It’s been our pleasure to serve all of you, and we hope your Thanksgiving holiday is special in every way.

The phrase “black Friday” also became famous for all the wrong reasons in 1966. Philadelphia police used it to refer to the Friday traffic jams and crowding in downtown stores from tourists and shoppers who flooded into the city in advance of the Army-Navy football game held the Saturday after Thanksgiving each year. Bigger crowds and rowdiness contributed to long hours and stressful shifts for local police.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2019

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) While it seems that chaos is taking over, you get everything back to normal, even if it means being more than a little assertive with some people. Expect to hear more job-related news soon. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Expect to be able to move ahead with your workplace plans now that you have a good idea of what you might have to face. You also can anticipate a welcome change on the home front. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A quieter period settles in, giving you a chance to catch your breath, as well as allowing for more time to handle some important family matters. The arts dominate this weekend. Enjoy them. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The frustrations of last week have pretty much played themselves out. You should find things going more smoothly, especially with those allimportant personal matters. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Once again, you find a creative way to resolve a pesky problem in short order. However, a matter involving a possible breach of confidence might need a bit more time to check out. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Reuniting with an old friend could lead to the sharing of some great new experiences. But be careful you don’t find yourself once again being super-critical or overly judgmental. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You should be seeing some positive results following your move toward repairing that unraveling relationship. There might be some setbacks, but staying with it ultimately pays off. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Encouraging a friendlier environment in the home could go a long way to help dissipate anger and resolve problems, especially those affecting children. It won’t be easy, but you can do it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A recent act of kindness is beginning to show some unexpected (but very welcome) results. On another note, expect to hear more about a possible move to another locale. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The good news is that the sure-footed Goat can rely on his or her skill to get around obstacles in the workplace. The not-so-good news is that new impediments could turn up later. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A change of pace is welcome but also confusing. Before you make decisions one way or another, be sure you know precisely what it is you’re being asked to do. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Don’t fret if you don’t get the gratitude you think you’re owed for doing a nice thing for someone. There might be a good reason for that. In any event, what’s important is that you did it. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of making the sort of wise decisions that ultimately shed new light on dark situations.

“We are inclined to believe those whom we do not know because they have never deceived us” ~ Samuel Johnson Each year we read nw stories about victims who have been duped by confident men. The same old crooked schemes work on people who should know better but who put an almost childlike trust in total strangers. Johnson speculates that we tend to believe strangers because they have no record of deceit. The people close to us may have “fibbed” to us or misrepresented facts, perhaps only to tease. The stranger’s record is unblemished until we learn to our sorrow that he, too, might lie to us for gain. There are definite advantages in making funeral arrangements well in advance of need. Let us review these with you…no cost or obligation.

Another way to simplify cooking for a crowd is to invite guests to bring along a side dish or dessert. Guests who live nearby can make something in advance of the big meal, while hosts can hand over their kitchens to overnight guests who express a willingness to contribute their own homecooked dish to the party. Sharing the cooking duties gives hosts more time to connect with friends and family and serves as a great way to plan the menu in advance.

EASY ‘GREEN’ THANKSGIVING IDEAS Thanksgiving is a holiday to give thanks and share special moments with family and friends. While the original Thanksgiving might have taken place during a time when food was sparse, nowadays Thanksgiving often involves excessive amounts of food, with more food ending up in the garbage than in celebrants’ bellies. The United States Department of Agriculture projects that Americans will throw away more than 200 million pounds of edible turkey meat this Thanksgiving holiday. And Thanksgiving typically ushers in a period of wastefulness, as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says American households produce roughly 25 percent more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than during the rest of the year. Reducing waste is a worthy goal year-round, but especially so during the holiday season. And accomplishing that goal can be done without sacrificing holiday traditions.

7 Ways to Boost your GrAttitude this Thanksgiving By Amanda Dudek

S

haring around the table has come full circle, and now it’s your turn. Of course, you are thankful for your family, your home, the family dog, but didn’t you say that all last year? This is the Thanksgiving moment that makes me anxious, not discovering the turkey is dry or the gravy is lumpy. November, that minx of months, has rolled around once again, and Thanksgiving Day fast approaches. Messages about being thankful swirl around us as thickly as an autumn fog, bringing with them a flurry of suggestions. In spite of what has become a pea soup for the soul, how can one truly be a thankful person? Many people take this time of year as an opportunity to serve at a food pantry or soup kitchen, participate in a clothing or gift drive, donate to a good cause or some other charitable act. Most gather together with family and friends, sharing a meal and even mentioning some things for which they are grateful. These traditions are all wonderful ways to express thankfulness and are worth keeping; however, true thankfulness grows from our everyday interactions. In fact, for many of us, Thanksgiving Day is a blip on the calendar that flies by far too quickly. While it is meant to be a celebration of our many blessings, it has little to do with whether or not we have a grateful approach to life. If we only set aside Thanksgiving Day as a time for thankful reflection and expression, we may find we lack a sufficient well of gratitude from which to draw.

Everything takes up emotional space: joy, anger, fear, happiness, resentment, love. Processing toxic emotions can open up new space to fill with thankfulness. A few mindful additions to your everyday habits can grow your gratitude all year long, leaving you filled to overflowing and eager to share each Thanksgiving! 1. Write a one line note to each member of your family, sharing one thing about them for which you are grateful each Sunday evening. This will not only send you to bed feeling thankful for your family, but also your family will start their week feeling loved and appreciated. 2. Get involved in a local charity or cause that touches you personally and inspires you. This may lift your spirits and give you authentic, comparative gratitude, unlike “staged” Facebooks photos. Once or twice a year is admirable, but it is simply not enough to impact your outlook long-term. 3. Set aside quiet time for thankful reflection. It will refresh your outlook and refocus you, especially after stressful days.

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

4. Turn aggravation on its head by shifting perspective. For example, in this current hyper-political climate, inflammatory statements about nearly every political view, candidate and affiliation abound. Rather than being drawn into a mudslinging frenzy, consider being thankful for the freedom to voice various opinions. 5. Take time out to notice your environment. There are so many things we take for granted, especially during the holiday rush: clean water, hot water, dishes in the sink because we have food to eat, laundry because we have clothes to wear, the physical ability to get out of bed, a place to live, toothpaste, a doctor and pharmacies that actually have medicine, even warm beds in which to sleep. This is not to say that there are not issues and challenges which should be addressed, simply that the good often greatly outweighs the bad if we are looking for it. 6. Gratitude multiplies when shared, so mention things you are grateful for and mention them often. Tell your coworker you are thankful that she made the coffee this morning. Let your son know you are grateful for his kindness to his sister, or simply thank someone for their smile. 7. Get your family involved. Create a Gratitude Space using a whiteboard, chalkboard or poster paper. Family thankful notes “in the moment” are sure to make you smile! While I will always look forward to my dad’s savory sausage stuffing, sweet potatoes with marshmallows and brown sugar, juicy slices of turkey and tangy cranberry sauce followed by a slice of my mom’s delicious pumpkin pie, I think what I am most looking forward to this year is my turn to share the many wonderful blessings I have found in the everyday. Love to write? We are looking for YOU! Become a volunteer writer and share your original story, personal experience, community happening or school event with us! It will be featured on our popular website for all to see. Who knows - it may even end up in print! Go to My Hometown at www.gvpennysaver. com or email our Hometown Editor Amanda Dudek at AmandaDudek@gvpennysaver.com!

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT The first thing pregnant working women should know is that they have the right to work while pregnant. In the United States, it has been illegal to discriminate against pregnant women in the workplace since 1978, when the Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed. But in spite of those laws, some employers may be less receptive to their female employees’ pregnancies, with some insisting they harbor good intentions, such as the woman’s safety. Businesses cannot fire employees for being pregnant, and many courts have ruled that decisions about the safety of the woman and fetus are up to the employee and her doctor, not her boss. On the same token, a company cannot refuse to hire a person simply because she’s pregnant.

A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night.
