HOW TO ORGANIZE OFFICE GIFT EXCHANGES Think of life outside the office. When shopping, start thinking about what your coworkers like to do when they are not at work. For example, golf enthusiasts may enjoy a box of balls or a gift certificate to play at an area course. Stick to generic gifts if you are unsure of what your coworkers do when they are not working. Personalized holiday mementos, gadgets for entertaining, items that can be used around the office or foodrelated gift baskets make great holiday gifts. Remember to take into account others’ religions and traditions when shopping.

HOLIDAY PARTY MUST-HAVES Games can be a great way to keep guests occupied during the party. From a safety perspective, games that engage guests might prevent them from overindulging in alcohol at a time of year when the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration says drunk driving incidents are at their highest. Games in which participants can win holiday-themed prizes might be especially enjoyable for players.

Share some cooking duties. Another way to simplify cooking for a crowd is to invite guests to bring along a side dish or dessert. Guests who live nearby can make something in advance of the big meal, while hosts can hand over their kitchens to overnight guests who express a willingness to contribute their own homecooked dish to the party. Sharing the cooking duties gives hosts more time to connect with friends and family and serves as a great way to plan the menu in advance.

CHRISTMAS TREE VARIETIES Living Christmas tree, which refers to those with their roots still intact, are popular among eco-conscious holiday enthusiasts. That’s because living trees can be promptly planted after they’ve served their purpose indoors. Opt for a moderately sized tree, as root balls on larger trees can be heavy and difficult to move. Living trees can typically be kept indoors for around seven to 10 days before they will need to be returned outside. Move such trees to a sheltered outdoor area for one to two weeks so they can reacclimate to the climate. So long as the ground is not frozen, trees can then be planted when the reacclimation period ends. Better Homes and Gardens suggests selecting a mild day to plant the tree.

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children.

New Hours: Friday 11am-Close Early Bird Fish Fry Special 4-5:30pm Saturday 11am-Close Sunday 11am-4pm

Open for all scheduled events Daily Specials

One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There could be an unexpected change in plans for your upcoming holiday travels. But keep in mind that a little flexibility goes a long way in resolving any disappointments. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A new relationship might not be responding quite as quickly as you’d hoped. Could you be expecting too much too soon? Try to ease up and let things happen at their own pace. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) As we approach the frenetic pace of pre-holiday planning, take time out now to reconnect with the wonderful people who share your life, especially the one who also shares your dreams. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A misunderstanding should be resolved before you get caught up in the flurry of holiday preparations. Set your pride aside and deal with it, regardless of who might have hurt whom first. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Being told that a colleague might have been trying to undercut your effectiveness might or might not be true. Get all the facts before you even think about acting on this so-called information. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s a good idea to start your holiday preparation plans early in order to avoid a time crunch if an unresolved workplace situation causes a problem. That old friend might have some welcome news. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A family member’s actions continue to surprise you, but this time with positive results. Could be your wise counsel finally got through. It’s like having an early holiday gift, isn’t it? SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Your reluctance to act in a current situation could be traced to your inner self advising you to take more time to study its complexities before you attempt to deal with it. Good luck. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Soothing hurt feelings before they can ignite an angry outburst is the wise thing to do. And, of course, when it comes to doing the “wisdom thing,” you do it so well. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Budget your time so that you can handle both your workplace duties and your personal holiday planning -- including travel arrangements -- without burning out on either end. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might find that you still need to firm up one or two of those still-outstanding decisions so that you finally can move forward as you had planned. Weigh the facts, then act. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You usually don’t carry grudges, but you might feel this is one time when you’re justified in doing so. But aren’t you spending too much energy holding onto it? Let it go and move on. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of using your quiet strength to persuade people to follow their better instincts and do the right thing. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

PROLONG THE LIFE OF YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE Avoid placing the tree near heaters or drafty windows. Many people know that placing a live tree near a potentially hot heating vent poses a fire hazard. But doing so also can dry out the tree, decreasing the chances it will make it through the season. Placing the tree near drafty windows also can dry out the tree, so try to find a spot in your home with a consistent temperature.

WHAT CAUSES DEPRESSION? Although the cause of depression remains a mystery, certain distinguishing factors are common among those who have the condition. People with clinical depression appear to have physical changes in their brains. In addition, naturally occurring brain chemicals known as neurotransmitters likely play a role in depression. The Mayo Clinic states changes in the function and effect of these neurotransmitters and how they interact with neurocircuits involved in maintaining mood stability may play a significant role in depression and its treatment. In addition to biological factors in the brain, hormones can impact rates of depression or even trigger it. These hormone shifts may be a leading reason why women have higher incidence rates of depression than men. Depression is more common in people whose blood relatives also have the condition. Therefore, those with a family history of depression may be more likely to get it than those without such a connection. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Discover The Human Touch In Hearing Technology

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Does A-Fib Diagnosis Mean No More Steak?

Lakeville 3513 Thomas Dr., Suite 2 Henrietta

---

20 Finn Road, Suite C

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with atrial fibrillation a year ago. A week after that, I had an MRI that showed I’d had a ministroke and probably several others in the past. I love ribeye steak, and eat it maybe two or three times a year. Is this safe? -- R.A. ANSWER: Atrial fibrillation is a rhythm problem of the heart. The natural rhythm is lost, so the heartbeat becomes irregular. Because of the lack of normal movement in the heart, the blood can pool and form clots in the left atrium; these clots can travel downstream to lodge in a blood vessel. Clots can cut off the blood supply to the area where they lodge. It’s most critical when it happens in the brain, since if brain cells die, function is lost. A stroke is just a focal area of cell death in the brain. The size and location of the area in the brain where cell death occurs determines how significant the stroke is. Strokes can range from unnoticeable to devastating to fatal. Most people with atrial fibrillation take medication to reduce the risk of stroke. Eating poorly can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke as well, but most commonly this happens via a different mechanism. High amounts of saturated fat -- such as in ribeye steak, which is fattier than many cuts of beef -- increase the risk of damage to blood vessels through buildup of cholesterol plaques. These plaques cut off blood supply, and this causes a heart attack if the plaques are lodged in the arteries of the heart, a stroke if in the brain, and various problems if in other parts of the body. In people who have a history of stroke, it’s particularly important to take steps to reduce further risk. That means a discussion with your doctor about whether you are on the best treatment for atrial fibrillation and whether you have evidence of cholesterol plaques. Even if you don’t have any evidence of plaques, a healthy diet of mostly plants, with whole grains, nuts and seeds, some fatty fish (if you enjoy that) and sparse amounts of meats reduces many health risks. However, two or three steaks a year is not going to cause harm. The best data available shows that people who have 100 grams (just over 3 ounces) of red meat a week are at the lowest risk of developing blood vessel problems. It’s not clear that zero is better than that small amount. In any event, I am a firm believer that enjoying life is the goal. If having a steak a few times a year is truly enjoyable, the risk is small, and you should enjoy those meals without guilt.

Caring for you and the community since 2001.

THE EFFECTS OF STRESS ON YOUR BODY Behavioral side effects Behavior also can be affected by stress, which may cause some people to abuse drugs or alcohol. Some may even turn to tobacco, either becoming a smoker or smoking more if they’re already smokers. Smoking has been linked to a host of negative physical side effects, including an increased risk of developing cancer. Angry outbursts, social withdrawal and overeating or undereating are some additional potential side effects of stress on the body.

DEAR DR. ROACH: What is the body’s rate of absorption for calcium? -- A. ANSWER: The textbook answer is 20% to 40%, but in reality, the answer is very complicated, as it depends on total body and intracellular calcium, vitamin D levels, presence of phosphates in food and other factors. The short answer is that it’s usually exactly what it needs to be when things work properly. If the body is deficient in calcium, then absorption is maximal, but still most calcium in food is not absorbed.

HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Check for leaks and plug any you find. Homes may develop air leaks over time, and such leaks allow air to infiltrate the home. W hen that occurs, homeow ners instinctively turn up the thermostat in w inter to combat the cold air getting in. Come summertime, those same homeow ners w ill run their air conditioners on a higher setting in an effort to stay comfortable w hen hot air is creeping through the cracks. Rather than adjusting the temperature inside, fix any sources of air infiltration you find. Run your hand along doorw ays and w indow s to determine if any drafts are coming through. Older homes may also develop cracks in bricks, around the foundation and in siding or stucco. Seal any areas w here you feel air infiltrating your home, w hich w ill save money, reduce your energy consumption and make your older home more efficient.

It’s Lights, Camera, Action from Rochester to Buffalo By Amanda Dudek ost-Spider-man, a camera crew is once more filming in Western New York, but this time, it’s a little closer to home for some. Yesterday is Gone, featuring UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock and Christopher Bihrle, and directed by Joe Black, is a sequel to Grace is Gone, which filmed in 2016 and starred Shamrock, by a local cast and crew throughout Western New York.

the script and the improv. “He is very flexible with what works best, even if it goes off script,” shared Brown. “Everyone feels comfortable working under his direction.” Christopher Bihrle who acts and is even a collaborating writer, is no exception: “Bihrle is attached to his character, Jericho,” observed Brown. “He can relate to Jericho’s motivation because he, too, has children. If he feels Jericho would do something differently, he does it.” Brown clarified that although the film centers around themes of family connections and loyalty, its setting of a dystopian, gang-ruled future following a globally devastating plague, some violence and gore and its revenge-driven narrative is likely unsuitable for younger viewers. Nevertheless, Brown stated the film’s overwhelming theme is about family.

Main character, Jericho, played by Christopher Bihrle.

“We are all out of Rochester,” said Co-Producer Ashley Brown. “We want to create exposure for the Rochester area. Our producers, Brad Vollmer, JB, and Christopher Bihrle, have done several movies here locally, and we just started getting a cast and crew together for Yesterday is Gone six months ago.” The team, who casts many local actors and uses local talent on the crew, is looking currently looking to hire additional cast and crew. “There are so many talented people locally, and we hope to collaborate with all of them,” shared Brown. “We were out in Brockport filming Grace is Gone. We have also filmed in Downtown Buffalo and some of its warehouses, on a farm outside of Rochester and recently, at Corcoran Soybean Farms in Caledonia. “The soybean farm was one of my favorite locations,” Brown said. “It was such an interesting atmosphere. There were sheep and a dog, and we had to work with this live location, sometimes incorporating these things into the movie itself ”. While some may find this challenging, Brown enjoys it. “It is actually a very fun process,” she stated. “We were at the soybean farm for two weekends. We just started filming in the beginning of October, and we can be on set for 10-12 days. Each time, we have to set up the scene and make sure the camera angles are perfect for the way we want to shoot.” Still, Brown claims it is when the actors arrive that all the magic happens. “They know their characters so well they are able to think like they do and know how each would react,” she explained. “If they feel something is more natural for their character in a given moment, they will go off script and improvise; that’s the fun part!” Behind the scenes of Sometimes, the improvisation Taylor Day, who plays works best, and it takes a keen eye Ellie, in Buffalo, NY with to know when that is. “This film centers on a father who is willing to do whatever it takes to get revenge for his daughter’s death,” she explained. “Jericho is willing to risk everything for his family, and people relate to that: caring for and wanting what is best for their families.” Gravitas Ventures and Cut Entertainment plan to release Grace is Gone, filmed in 2016, on Video on Demand, DVD and Blu-Ray in January 2020, and is set to be followed by the debut Yesterday is Gone in 2021. “We are hoping local theaters will be interested in screening our movie,” said Brown. “This will help us promote the Greater Rochester and Buffalo areas. We are also offering sponsorships for screen, IMDB and social media credit.” As of now, the cameras are still rolling. “We are looking for additional local actors, actresses, extras, local businesses, a local junkyard and a local church in which to film movie scenes, and additional film crew, including audio help,” Brown stated. A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 7, 1805, explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, having made a difficult trip across the rugged Rockies, set up winter camp near the mouth of the Columbia River. They named it Fort Clatsop, after the local Indian tribe. * On Dec. 6, 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, officially ending the institution of slavery, is ratified when Georgia votes to ratify. Mississippi, however, would not submit documentation to abolish slavery until 2013. * On Dec. 5, 1945, five U.S. Navy Avenger torpedo-bombers take off from Florida on a routine three-hour training mission near the Bahamas. Two hours later, the planes disappeared. Mariner aircraft, sent to locate the planes, also disappeared. No trace of the men or aircraft were ever found.

How H ow P People eople W With ith L Low ow V Vision ision C Can an S Stay tay S Safe afe A nd d IIndependent nd depend dent And (NAPS)—People with low vision have blind spots that can make it difficult or impossible to drive, read or see faces. These impairments cannot be corrected by surgery or glasses. What’s more, too many are blind to the realization that much can be done to improve their quality of life. What Can Be Done In fact, low vision rehabilitation services help people make the most of the vision they have. The first step is to get an eye exam by an ophthalmologist, a physician who specializes in medical and surgical eye care. Who Can Help An ophthalmologist can determine the full extent of vision loss and exact location of blind spots. Either the ophthalmologist or a low vision specialist can then determine the best techniques and devices that can help you get around your individual challenges. Where EyeCare America Comes In If you’re concerned about the cost of the exam, the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeCare America program may be able to help. This national public service program provides eye care through volunteer ophthalmologists for eligible seniors 65 and older; and those at increased risk for eye disease. As one EyeCare America patient said, “I’m a senior living on a low income. It had been 30 years since I’d had an eye exam. It was a true blessing to receive this service.” Low Vision Services Offer Hope The field of vision rehabilitation has advanced significantly over the years, offering more effective technologies and strategies. Today, ophthalmologists’ solutions range from simple, portable video magnifiers to enlarge text and objects to high-tech glasses with cameras that let people read text and see faces. In addition, there are many simple changes people can make on their own to help them live better: • Improve contrast. Contrasting colors can make it easier to accomplish household tasks and improve safety. Put dark place mats under white place settings, get area rugs that are a contrasting color with the floor and kitchen towels and cutting boards that contrast with the counter top. Use contrasting colored tape along the edges of rugs, stair steps and lamp shades. • Improve lighting. Every year, about three million older Americans are treated for injuries from falls, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many of these falls are caused by low vision. Add lighting to staircases and dark hallways. Remove rugs from hallways to prevent tripping. Task lighting in the kitchen can make food preparation safer and easier. • Reduce clutter and organize. A cluttered house is more difficult to navigate and can contribute to falls and frustration. When each item has a specific place and is identified with a high-contrast label, it’s easier to locate items needed for everyday living. • Embrace technology. Books on tape and personal voice-activated assistants, such as Google Home or Amazon’s Alexa, can be enormously helpful for people who can no longer see well enough to read, dial a phone or set a thermostat. With a simple voice command, these can phone dial a friend for you while the thermostat dials up the heat. While there isn’t one strategy or tool that works for every person, vision rehabilitation offers hope for many and can help people stay in their homes and continue doing the things they love. HOLIDAY PARTY MUST-HAVES Decking the halls is a holiday tradition, and hosts should make an effort to string some holiday decorations before welcoming guests into their homes. A Christmas tree might be the most ubiquitous decorative item come the holidays, so hosts can make their tree the centerpiece of their decor. Hang some mistletoe around the house, which also can be adorned with season-specific plants like holly and poinsettias. If kids are attending the party, a kid-friendly decoration station can even be set up to ensure the youngsters have fun and stay busy during the festivities.

DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE. In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall. If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall. To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today. REAL ESTATE

Rosa Mae (Youngblood) Watkins

Dorothy Grace (Broadwell) Hodges

(Sunrise November 2nd 1921-Sunset September 8th, 2019) Rosa Mae Watkins was born November 2nd 1921 as Rosa Mae Youngblood. She was born in Deridder, Louisiana in the Beauregard Parish. She was the oldest of four (4) siblings. They included; Bernice Jefferson, Viola Jefferson, Lafayette Jefferson and Eddie Lee Jones. Her father was Herbert Youngblood and her mother was Lucille Simonds. Rosa Mae was the mother of seven (7) children; James Tucker, Eva Mae Watkins, Robert Watkins Jr., E.J. Watkins, Anita Watkins, Shelia Watkins and Elizabeth (Betty) Watkins. She had ten (10) grandchildren, Jamall Youngblood Watkins, Cordell Watkins (twins), Brandon McNeil, Cheyenne Watkins, Ebony Keith, John Pogue, Shawn Pogue, Lynette Pogue, Sabrina Tucker and James Tucker Jr. She had ten (10) great-grandchildren; Paxton Watkins, Laquasha Richards, Trinity Scott, Tyler Clay, Taylor Clay (twins), Lamiyah Barr, LaVaugh Barr (twins), Kani McNeil, Zaria McNeil, Sydnee McNeil, and two (2) great- great-grandchildren; Taylor Smith and Traylyn Smith. Rosa Mae was predeceased February 1, 2013 by her husband of many years, Robert Watkins. From their homeland in Louisiana various branches of the family migrated from Louisiana to California, Wisconsin and Texas. Rosa and Robert were pushed from Louisiana in the 1940s by poverty and racial animosity and drawn to the north by a promise of a better life for them and their children. They followed the harvesting of crops to New York State and eventually settled in the Canadice/Hemlock/Springwater area in the Finger Lakes region. Rosa Mae initially worked as a domestic (cleaning homes and businesses) and retired from Gunlock Manufacturing. In her declining years she lived with and was cared for by her son (E.J.), her daughter in law (Diane Watkins), her daughter (Betty Watkins) and her caretaker Willnia Reavis. Her family offers many heartfelt thanks to Willnia Reavis for her dedication to our mother. Rosa Mae became a devout Jehovah’s Witness in the 1950s. She attended her congregation regularly. She committed herself to field service and proselytized the word of God as long as she was able to walk and to worship the Truth. After 97 years of life, on the 2nd Sunday of September, 2019, Rosa Mae (Youngblood) Watkins, while in a comfort home, quietly departed from this world. Her family and friends will remember her dedication, strength, and humor. We will miss her forever and ever. There will be a memorial gathering to pay the Watkins family matriarch honor and respect on Tuesday, December 3rd, 2019. It will be held at the Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church, 1200 South Winton Road, Rochester NY at 7pm. To send a condolence or share a memory please visit: www. doughertyfuneralhomes.com. (585) 346-5401 Like branches on a tree we do grow in different directions. Yet our roots remain strong to anchor us. We love the warmth of the rays of the sun and endure the pain of the ice and rain. However, when a leaf falls from the family tree we all share the sorrow. Mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great, great grandmother, auntie, and friend Rosa Mae Watkins we will miss you from sunrise to sunset, forever and ever.

Goodwill is priceless. It can exist between individuals, such as neighbors and friends. A company needs the goodwill of those with whom the company does business. When goodwill exists, each party regards the other in a friendly way. Every action is assumed to be motivated by good intentions. Goodwill is built gradually by a long series of transactions in an atmosphere of trust and friendship. A single act which betrays a confidence or takes an unfair advantage can shatter a relationship which has been built slowly over a long period. We believe that a funeral ceremony should be a beautiful experience, helping the bereaved in their first step towards adjustment to their loss. Call us first.

ARE POINSETTIAS POISONOUS?

While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact.

People don’t like to let others in front of them because they feel they should wait their turn patiently. Lately, I have been letting sometimes two people behind me, people with separate carts or with one or two items in their hands go first. It doesn’t hurt to be kind to someone. I have had

Even if people don’t let me ahead of them, I continue to do so, knowing I did the right thing, and it is more commendable to do a kindness and something for someone that did not do the same.

Reach out promptly to let them know you may be anticipating missed payments. It is better if you initiate contact rather than going into default. The same tactic can be used for mortgage or rent payments.
