A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
Five Good Reasons To Eat Less Meat (NAPS)—The next time you’re planning a family meal, a party or just a little snack for yourself, consider this: Reducing your meat consumption can have a multitude of benefits. Why To Avoid Meat Here’s the explanation from Joe Loria, Meat Reduction Campaign Manager of World Animal Protection, a global nonprofit whose mission is to have a world where animals live free of suffering: 1) It helps your health: From reducing cancer rates and heart disease to showing an increased overall lifespan, by consuming more plant-based foods you’ll be helping to improve your own health. 2) It helps fight climate change: Factory farming is one of the leading causes of climate change and deforestation. Simply cutting back on the amount of meat you consume can combat climate change. 3) It helps farmed animals: Of the more than 70 billion animals farmed annually, 50 billion of them spend their lives on factory farms. There, they’re treated more like machines than like living, breathing, feeling creatures. They endure short, miserable lives and are often confined together in cages, crates or pens, which prevent them from engaging in natural behavior. Reducing your meat consumption will make a huge difference to the lives of these animals and free-up resources. 4) It protects wildlife: Grazing land and feed crops now use more than a third of Earth’s entire landmass. This rapid loss of habitat means critical species are disappearing at alarming rates. Many experts warn a mass extinction is on its way. 5) It helps fight hunger: There are nearly a billion starving people on the planet, while it takes 16 pounds of grain to produce just one pound of beef. By reducing your meat consumption you can help alleviate the waste associated with factory farming. Not eating meat can also help prevent slave labor and sexual abuse. Workers on factory farms are in many cases treated almost as cruelly as the animals. These workers are often subjected to workplace hazards, including life-threatening injuries, respiratory illnesses, PTSD, and exposure to dangerous antibiotic-resistant bacteria. You can help stand up for these exploited workers by reducing your meat consumption and withdrawing financial support from companies profiting from poor labor practices. Change Starts With You To protect your health, your planet, your fellow human beings and animals, it can be a good idea to dramatically reduce your consumption of meat. Fortunately, that need not be a hardship. There are plenty of tasty, nutritious plant-based alternatives and protein sources such as “clean meat.” Learn More For further facts, to pledge to eat less meat and to contribute to the cause, visit www.worldanimalprotection.us/meatreduction. Reducing your consumption of factory-farmed meat can be good for you and the rest of the planet. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

* On Dec. 27, 1900, prohibitionist Carry Nation smashes up a bar in Wichita, Kansas, causing extensive damage and landing in jail. Nation became famous for carrying a hatchet and wrecking saloons, and sold souvenir hatchets to help fund her anti-alcohol activities. * On Dec. 26, 1946, infamous gangster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel opens his Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas. The grand opening was a flop, however, and the casino lost $300,000 in the first week. The hotel was named after Siegel’s girlfriend, whose nickname was “The Flamingo” because of her red hair and long legs. * On Dec. 25, 1962, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” a film based on the novel by Harper Lee, opens in theaters. The Great Depression-era story of racial injustice and the loss of childhood innocence is told from the perspective of a young Alabama girl named Scout Finch.

Eating Peanut Butter Cured Her Insomnia ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Several years ago, I attended a presentation about insomnia. A registered nurse discussed how, in her career as a nursing home nurse, she had many residents with insomnia. She stated that she had amazing success with these residents. The snack they gave them was crackers and cheese or peanut butter crackers. I was skeptical at first, then one night at 2 a.m., on my fourth night of insomnia, I tried eating 2 teaspoons of peanut butter. Bingo! I slept. Whenever my insomnia occurs, I eat 2 teaspoons of peanut butter, and in less than 15 minutes I’m sleeping. I use a nothing-fancy store brand of peanut butter. Please pass this information on to other readers with an explanation. -- B.J.T. ANSWER: I appreciate your writing to give another option for this common problem. One reason that some people think this may work is that the protein content in peanut butter is a source of tryptophan, which increases serotonin levels to help one relax. I also have read that this effect is so small as to be clinically meaningless, and that any sleep effect is due to placebo. I suspect the truth is a combination. Two tablespoons of peanut butter is almost 200 calories, so this is not a good choice for someone struggling with too much weight. I’m also not one for “fancy,” but be sure to choose a peanut butter with no trans fats and no added sugars. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently recovered from sigmoid

colectomy surgery, and I would hate to repeat this, given that I am 75 years old. What are the possibilities of recurrence of diverticulitis for which the surgery was performed? It’s nothing I’d care to undergo again if it can be avoided! -- C.K. ANSWER: Surgery for diverticulitis is generally reserved for people with multiple recurrences. The sigmoid colon tends to be the portion of the colon with the most diverticula (small pouches in the wall of the colon that may get inflamed or bleed). Surgery usually is curative, with only 15% of people developing new diverticula and only 2% to 11% needing further surgery. It’s not proven, but most authorities believe that reducing pressure in the colon with a high-fiber diet reduces risk of developing diverticula, either recurrent after surgery or in the first place. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have heard of people whose hair turned white overnight due to some traumatic event. Is there any truth to that? -- H.M. ANSWER: The sudden change of hair color is called canities subita. There was a review of literature published in 2013 with 44 well-documented cases of sudden color change, 21 of which were associated with an episode of emotional stress. Think Sir Thomas More or Marie Antoinette before their respective executions. However, while true, rapid, color change is certainly documented, it is exceedingly rare. What probably is more common is the sudden loss of pigmented hair in someone who already has some gray hair. Sudden loss of pigmented hair, in a condition called alopecia areata diffusa, can lead to an apparent color change. Hair lost during chemotherapy or radiation sometimes can come back with a different color or texture. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. If you need a car to get around on New Year’s Eve and plan to drink alcohol, arrange for someone else to do your driving for you. Groups of friends should choose someone to be their designated driver or pool their money and hire a taxi or bus service for the night so no one who’s been drinking gets behind the wheel. The NHTSA even offers a free app called SaferRide that is compatible with Apple and Android devices and enables users to call a taxi or a friend to be picked up.

CELEBRATE SAFELY THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE Don’t overindulge in alcohol. For many people, overindulging in alcohol is part and parcel during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Such behavior puts everyone at risk, even people who don’t drive. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, conservative estimates suggest that roughly one-half of sexual assaults on American women involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator, victim or both. While alcohol and its relationship to traffic fatalities draw the bulk of the attention on New Year’s Eve, even people who don’t intend to drive should recognize the dangers of overindulging in alcohol and drink responsibly.

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS IN THE YEAR AHEAD
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 31, 1999, the United States officially hands over control of the Panama Canal, putting the strategic waterway into Panamanian hands for the first time. The 50-mile canal, which links the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, officially opened when the SS Arcon sailed through in August 1914.
Examine your priorities. Achieving goals is easier when their goals can be among your biggest priorities. Examine your priorities to determine if you can fully commit to goals that may require significant time commitments. Men and women who are already stretched thin may need to recalibrate their goals or make changes in other areas of their lives before they can fully commit to pursuing new goals.

SNOWPLOWING
SNOW PLOWING Seasonal rates starting at $99!
Be as specific as possible. In addition to being patient, being specific when deciding on a resolution can increase the likelihood that the successful pursuit of that resolution will have as positive an impact on your life as possible. For example, a nonspecific resolution to lose weight may be successful if you only shed a single pound. But men and women who resolve to lose weight typically want to lose more than one pound. By resolving to lose a predetermined and specific number of pounds, you might be more likely to commit to your goal, and more encouraged the closer you get to achieving that goal.

SALOME’S STARS ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The New Year brings challenges that can change many things in your life. You need to be prepared not only to confront them, but also to deal with what happens afterward. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You have what it takes to set your goals quite a bit higher this year. Learn what you need to know and put what you learn into your efforts. A partner offers loving support. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) In true Gemini Twin fashion, you’re conflicted about a decision you know you’ll have to make in this New Year. Best advice: Get the facts before you make any commitment. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A friend offers you an exciting opportunity for this New Year. Although your positive aspects are strong in most respects, caution is advised. Investigate before you invest. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You can make this New Year a roaring success. Start by readjusting your goals to reflect the changes in the economy. Your den mate offers both wise and loving support. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The New Year brings new opportunities for change. But you need to be ready to move from the comfortable status quo to the challenging unknown. It’s up to you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your most important New Year’s resolution should be to work out problems with a family member in order to avoid continuing misunderstandings. Do it soon, for both of your sakes. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The New Year has much to offer the intensely determined Scorpian, who isn’t afraid to take on challenges and stay with them until they surrender their rewards. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You’ll have many fine opportunities in this New Year. But be warned: Reject offers of “help.” You work best when you’re free to be your own creative self. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The New Year offers changes that you might feel you’re not quite ready for. Best advice: Deal with them one step at a time, until you’ve built up your self-confidence. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Travel is a dominant aspect of the New Year. This could mean relocating to another city (or even another country) in connection with your education or your career. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) This New Year brings news about a change you’ve been anticipating. You might have a problem persuading a loved one about your new plans, but he or she will soon go along with them. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making people feel safe and protected. You would make an excellent youth counselor.

CELEBRATE SAFELY THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE Host responsibly. Even people who don’t intend to leave their homes can take steps to make New Year’s Eve safer for everyone. If you’re hosting a party at home, do so responsibly, making sure none of your guests overindulge and making the party less about drinking and more about having fun. Shift the focus from toasting drinks to games and activities that don’t include alcohol. Make sure to have plenty of food and nonalcoholic beverages on hand and encourage people who are drinking to eat full meals and drink water throughout the night. People who fill up on food and water during the party may feel full, which may discourage them from having extra drinks. While many people will expect to drink alcohol on New Year’s Eve, don’t stock up on too much alcohol, the availability of which may encourage guests to overindulge. Hosts also should keep the phone numbers of local taxi services handy just in case some guests cannot drive themselves home safely. W hile it’s tempting to huddle up indoors w hen w inter hits full sw ing, families w ho embrace the great outdoors w hen the temperatures dip can avoid cabin fever and enjoy one another’s company along the w ay. TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.
Hats Off To A New Year Warm wishes from all of us for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2018. We thank you for your business & look forward to seeing you in the new year.

Ray Mitchell Skinner December 19, 2019 AVON - Passed away peacefully on December 19, 2019 at age 73, while surrounded by his children at home, following 12 months of treatment for cancer. Ray was recently predeceased by his beloved brother John M. Skinner (Diane Walsh) Hornell, NY and niece Shaun Bellitto (Robert Bellitto) Hamburg, NY. Previously predeceased by his father, Merritt (Matt) Skinner and mother, Frances (Spink) Skinner; nephew John ( Jay) Skinner; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Galley. Ray is survived by his wife, Marcia (Bannister) Skinner of Dansville, NY; son, Aaron Skinner (Lauren Skinner) of Bel Air, MD; daughter, Arianne Skinner of Richmond, VA; grandsons Augustus Ray Skinner and Justus John Skinner; sister Marla Galley (Allan Bergeson) of Jamestown, NY; brother Lee Skinner of Allenspark, CO; as well as two sisters-in-law and four brothers-in-law, and their spouses; and 70+ special nieces and nephews. Born in North Hornell, NY in 1946, Ray graduated from Hornell High School in 1964. After his college graduation from Brockport State College, he was drafted into the United States Army. Upon his return from overseas, he studied his post graduate work at both Brockport and other surrounding Rochester-area colleges. He married in 1975 and moved to Avon the following year. Ray was a combat veteran of the Vietnam War; having served with the 9th Infantry Division, 11th Armored Calvary Regiment, and the 101st Airmobile Division. Following his service, he worked for the New York State Government, with the last several years working at the Office of Medicaid Inspector General. He retired in 2009 after 37 years of service. Over the years, Ray found numerous opportunities to give back to the community through various organizations and activities. He was a member of Avon VFW Post 5292, the American Legion Post 294, and the Rochester Vietnam Veterans of America-Chapter 20. To his children, Ray was their rock, their guide, and their hero. He lived his life like he taught his children: “Leave things better than you found it,” for which the world is better than he found it because of his kindness, compassion, service, and love he so generously gave everyone. Family and friends are invited to call Friday, December 27, 2019 from 4:00-7:00 PM at the Stephenson-Dougherty Funeral Home 350 Genesee Street, Avon. AVON - December 18, 2019 at the age of 82. He is predeceased by his wife Marcia Barrett. He is survived by his sister-in-law Faye M. Watkins, his children John and Janice Barrett, Robert and Anne Barrett, Daniel and Lynne Barrett, Grandchildren Janey (Kevin) Keenan, Jolene (Sam) Rugg, Whitney ( Jeff ) Jackson, Adam (Mary) Barrett, Maxwell (Mackenzie) Barrett, Samuel Barrett and Shawn Barrett, Joseph (Annika) Burchill, Kaitlyn Burchill, 8 great-grandchildren; brothers, John ( Jane) Barrett, Arthur Barrett, Don (Gayle) Barrett; several nieces and nephews. Norm was the youngest of eight sons of George and Isabell Barrett. Except for part of his childhood, Norm lived most of his life in Avon. He graduated from Avon Central School in 1955 and attended North Louisiana State on a football scholarship, and then Brockport State. He and Marcia married in 1957. His career was centered in the construction trades, working first for Pavilion Gas, followed by 10 years for Keegan Utilities of Rochester, then five years as Village of Avon Superintendent of Public Works. He was DPW Superintendent for the Village of Geneseo from 1972-1973, leaving that position only because residency was a requirement and his family did not want to leave Avon. In 1973, Norm established his own business, Livingston Construction Company, Inc., specializing in excavation, paving and water systems work. For 17 years his construction company had contracts for water system maintenance for both the towns of Rush and Avon. Through Livingston Construction and later as Avon Town Water Superintendent, Norm oversaw the maintenance and growth of the Town of Avon water system for 28 years. After retiring from the Town of Avon, Norman was hired as the Town of York Water Superintendent for a number of years. Norm was a generous and dedicated community volunteer, especially focused on youth. He served on the Avon Central School Board from 1984 to 2000 and was board president for 12 of those 14 years. He served over 15 years on the Genesee Valley BOCES Board. A sports enthusiast, Norm believed children could learn many important life lessons on a sports team and generously volunteered time and talents to youth sports activities. He was a Little League coach and co-founder of Avon’s Vince Lombardi youth football league. Livingston Construction Company equipment and crew moved donated bleachers from Empire Raceway in Leicester and used them to construct a “stadium” at the Avon Central Football Field. He was also largely responsible for the construction of the Avon youth soccer fields on Lake Rd. Norm volunteered his time and video equipment to film nearly every Avon varsity football game for many years to provide footage to coaches to use as teaching tools. Calling hours were held Friday, December 20, 2019 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Stephenson-Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 350 Genesee St. Avon. His Funeral service was held Saturday, December 21, 2019 at 10am, at the Zion Episcopal Church, 10 Park Place, Avon. Interment, East Avon Cemetery. Donations may be made to the Livingston County Hospice, 2 County Campus, Mt. Morris, NY 14510. To share a memory or send a condolence please visit: stephensondoughertyfuneralhome.com

Leon Van Lieshout December 23, 2019 Lakeville: Leon Van Lieshout, 92 years, of Geneseo, NY, formerly of Albion, NY, died on December 23, 2019 after being diagnosed with lung cancer in November 2019. He was born in the Netherlands, February 1, 1927, the son of Godfrey and Anne Marie Van Lieshout. Leon and his wife Hendrika married on September 19, 1956, and immigrated to the United States on September 29, 1956. They first settled in the Baltimore, MD area, where their six children were born. They also lived in Verona, NY, before moving to Albion, NY in 1978. Leon was a life-long dairy farmer, owning his own farms in upstate New York. Two of his sons, Michael and Andrew, continue to build on the farm he started in Albion. Leon served in the choir and was an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Albion for over 30 years before moving to St. Matthew Catholic Church in Livonia. Leon also loved ice skating, playing the accordion, and serving in local politics.
“Great actions are not always true sons of great and mighty resolutions…”
~ Samuel Johnson
He is survived by his children, Michael (Cyndy) Van Lieshout of Albion, Martina (Stephen) Moulton of Le Roy, David (Christina) Van Lieshout of Livonia, Lawrence (Barbara) Van Lieshout of Stillwater, MN, Andrew Van Lieshout of Albion, Anne Marie (Chris) Barnwell of Ft. He was predeceased by Hendrika, his wife of nearly 54 years, one grandchild, and six siblings.
This is the season for great and mighty resolutions. We analyze the nature of our lives and the direction they are taking, and decide how we could make improvements. We resolve to do better, either by eliminating some habit that is unworthy of us or by developing a practice that will enrich our lives. Johnson tells us that we also may be inspired to great action by circumstance rather than by resolution. When an opportunity arises, we may rise to the occasion with acts that do us credit and without the benefit of planning or high resolve. Arrangements made prior to need may include the assurance that adequate financing will be available. Our entire staff wishes all of our friends a happy, healthy and prosperous new year.

Thanks to the Falleti Ice Arena and Kiwanis Club in Batavia for offering free ice skating, skates and cocoa on Thanksgiving morning. It’s a very kind and generous gift to the community. This event is becoming a holiday tradition for our family. It’s so nice to see the rink packed with kids and families having fun. Thank you to the group of Christmas carolers who went around the village of LeRoy! It was such a surprise and definitely a blessing to see the joyful faces of little kids singing carols and spreading cheer.

I would like to say a most sincere “Thank You” to the very kind lady who was so pleasant and generous to my husband and me at Tom Wahl’s on Monday evening, December 16. Our family has had some pretty difficult situations to deal with in the last few years, and such wonderful consideration from someone we don’t even know reminds us that there are some real “angels” here on Earth. If only there were more people like you who open their heart to others, we would have a much better world. Since we don’t know who you are, we will pay your kindness forward, something that is important to us also. God bless you, Merry Christmas, and a wish for many rewards to come to you in the new year.

What a wonderful seasonal experience the Faith Fellowship Church put on recently. The performances, players, scenery and the message were heartfelt and much appreciated. Well done!
Was shopping at Tops and a family came up and handed us a gift card and said we wanted to do something nice this holiday season. Merry Christmas! A reminder that God is good and so are random people!
Thank you for providing my family and me with free calendars every year. You are a wonderful human being. Driving through all the little towns at Christmas time brings so much joy. They are filled with festive lights, window displays and homes all decorated. Such a joyous time of year! I would like to give a shout out to the morning crew at the Mt. Morris McDonalds. It’s wonderful to be greeted each morning with their smiles and cheerful attitudes. No matter what the weather or how busy they are, they never fail to greet you with a smile or to send off with a “have a good day.” So, thank you for making my morning a little brighter each day.

The crossing guards in LeRoy made my kids’ day! They dressed in PJ’s, Santa outfits and hats. These guys made my small town morning. My kids were so excited for the day going in to school after seeing them. I didn’t grow up in a small town and that little thing was really special!

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.
Baxter is a rescue from Lake Erie, where he wandered the docks until he was discovered by a passerby. It was about 7 years ago now when Baxter came into our lives and found a permanent place in our hearts. Baxter is a Schipperke-Pomeranian weighing slightly under 9 pounds. The only trick Baxter knows now-a-days is how to get treats. He knows where the treats are (in my right pocket), so he will routinely sit, like a good boy, on my right side, look up and stare until I cave in to grant him his wish. 5 Tips to Refresh Your Home in the New Year (Family Features) Each new year gives you the chance to reset and start new routines. When you’re considering new approaches to healthy living - whether eliminating or adding habits to improve your daily life - beginning with your home is an optimal choice. Your living environment has a strong influence on your life, and it’s worth evaluating how you can make updates that create a positive space for you and all that the new year will bring. Consider these ideas to refresh your home and simplify your housecleaning routine so you can spend more time focusing on your goals this year.
Start by Decluttering It’s practically impossible to get excited about a fresh start when you’re surrounding by last year’s junk. Make decluttering and purging unnecessary items a top priority for your refresh. Clear counters and tables to create more inviting surfaces and force yourself to assess which items are worth keeping. Get rid of items you don’t need by donating, selling or disposing them. Tackle piles of things you’ve carelessly tossed aside and find (or create) purposeful places for them to belong.
Simplify Your Laundry Routine Whether it’s the frustration of having no clean laundry or neverending baskets filled with clothes that need folding, laundry is an area where nearly every home can use a refresh. Start with the basics to make laundry easy and quick. A streamlined laundry system starts with the right tools for the job, such as all Mighty Pacs, which are available in several varieties with different benefits and contain single doses of detergent that release while inside your machine, so you can simply toss one in and start the load. If you have sensitive skin, try all Free Clear, the No. 1 recommended detergent brand by dermatologists, allergists and pediatricians for sensitive skin. It’s gentle and works through tough stains fast.
Create a Fitness Space One way to stay committed to a new workout regimen is to create a place where you enjoy spending time. Even if you don’t have a room to dedicate to fitness, you can make a fitness corner feel more intentional and less like an afterthought with some simple GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
●
GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
changes. If possible, locate your fitness area near a window so you can soak up the energy of natural light. Clear away unnecessary items and make room for the equipment or floor space you need. Add inspiring posters or make frames to hold your current workout guide. Add storage for hand weights, resistance bands and other small equipment to create your own home gym.
Reconfigure Your Furniture A full-fledged renovation may not be in the cards (or budget), but you can give your living space a quick facelift by simply rearranging the furniture. Beyond simple aesthetic changes, think about how you can make better use of natural light and improve traffic patterns. You might also eliminate extra pieces if the space feels overcrowded or consider borrowing functional items that add storage or seating from other rooms in the house.
Add Greenery The middle of winter may not seem like an ideal time to hone your green thumb, but adding a few plants can make your home feel more inviting and chase away the cold weather blues. Plants can also help serve as a natural air purifying system; they absorb carbon dioxide to help stimulate their growth and are believed to absorb a host of other airborne pollutants. Gym Etiquette Guide for the New Year By Susan, Anna & Lauren Vernick Etiquette Chics
5
, 4, 3, 2, 1... Happy New Year! The holidays are behind us, and 2020 is here. We hope many wonderful memories were made during the “most wonderful time of the year,” but, as we enter the New Year, some new pounds many have snuck up on some of us. We may be looking a bit more jolly than healthy. So once again, some of us determine to get healthy by joining a gym or fitness center. There is a lot of advice on how to stick to your resolutions, and we will leave that to the fitness experts. One thing we know: information and etiquette are power. Here are some gym etiquette tips that will empower you and springboard you toward success! Get to know the gym and rules: Schedule a tour of the facility during non-peak hours. Also, schedule an appointment(s) with a staff member to walk you through the equipment usage, as well as learn the rules and guidelines of the facility. Get class and fitness schedules, as well. Knowing what to expect helps add that comfort level, and that confidence that will help you achieve your goals.
(l-r) Anna, Susan & Lauren Vernick of Etiquette Chics.
you have to wait for the equipment, showers, swimming lanes and more. Patiently do so. Also, give those working out space; no one wants to feel crowded. With that said, do not monopolize certain pieces of equipment while others are waiting. Tis’ the Season... there are going to be masses of people in the facility and parking lot, too. Take a deep breath and do not let that rob your goals or joy.
Cell phones: Unless you are using your phone for a music or fitness app, timing yourself, or are truly “on-call,” put your phone away. Your phone will cause unnecessary distractions for you and others around you. “Techiquette” applies to the gym for certain. Refrain from loud talking, talking too much and sharing personal details. No one wants to hear about that medical procedure your aunt had! As always, no cell phone use in the locker rooms. That is a huge “no-no” and a safety issue. Remember, you are there to get fit and healthy, not to be distracted by those dings and rings.
Celebrate! If you achieved a month of consistent workouts, then reward yourself with a healthy lunch out or movies with a friend where you can practice either mealtime etiquette or movie etiquette. Visit our website for more helpful, empowering information at www.etiquettechics.net. Rewards are an important part of your fitness journey. We hope this helps you stick to your new fitness goals in the New Year and in the process, helps you become a new you! Now, ready, set, go! Please visit us on social media and follow/like us on Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram at “Etiquette Chics.” We also love to hear from our readers, please email us with questions or comments at etiquettechics@gmail.com!
Be sanitary and tidy: Be certain to wipe down and sanitize your equipment after use. This is not a scene from Rocky where the grimier, the better. Remember to throw away paper towels and other paper waste. Recycle your water bottle and remember to take yours home if it is the refillable type. If towels are provided, place them in appropriate laundering bins. Also, put equipment away during and after your workout. Practice good manners by being kind to yourself: Give yourself time to adjust to your new goals and new schedule. If you miss a day or two, (or week or so) do not let that discourage you. Get right back at it and realize that each workout is progress. Remember the quote: “Work Out. Eat Well. Be Patient. Repeat.” Remember to mind your manners: Treat the front desk staff and all staff politely and greet them with a “Good morning” or “How are you?” Remember the four foundational words and phrases of etiquette – Please, Thank You, Excuse Me and I’m Sorry – all apply to the gym when appropriate, which, in our book, is often. Be kind and remember that there may be times
