Buying something on sale is a very special feeling. In fact, the less I pay for something, the more it is worth to me. I have a dress that I paid so little for that I am afraid to wear it. I could spill something on it, and then how would I replace it for that amount of money? ~Rita Rudner

PROLONG THE LIFE OF YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE Protect the tree on the way home. Your tree might be vulnerable to damage as you transport it from the farm to your living room. Unwrapped trees placed atop vehicles can be dried out by the wind. Prevent wind damage by wrapping the tree if you plan to place it atop your vehicle. If possible, lay the tree in the bed of a pickup truck and close the cover over the bed. If you don’t have access to a pickup truck but can use a minivan or SUV to transport your tree, see if the tree fits inside your vehicle. If it doesn’t, wrap it tightly in a blanket or another form of cover, making sure the cover won’t blow off in the wind when you hit the open road.
CHRISTMAS TREE TIPS AND TRICKS Cut the bottom of the tree trunk before bringing it home to facilitate the uptake of fresh water daily. Trees can absorb as much as a gallon of water in a day, so make sure the tree gets fresh water every day.

Quick Cleaning Sometimes the joy of hosting can be overshadowed by the task of preparing for your guests. Although a thorough cleaning of the home is great if you have the time, it may not be necessary. Go from room to room identifying spaces that are in need of a thorough cleaning. Spend time in the kitchen clearing clutter from the counters and make sure the dining space is clean and the table is presentable. A table runner and a centerpiece of festive flowers can brighten up the space instantly. Fluff cushions on sofas and give floors or carpets a quick vacuuming. Always be sure the bathrooms are clean and fresh, with laundered hand towels at the ready. Children’s bedrooms and other areas of the house may not require such a critical eye. Simply keep doors closed in off-limits rooms.

It is with grateful hearts that we thank the hundreds of individuals and businesses who have given so generously in 2019 to the Teresa House Comfort Care Home of Geneseo. Because of all of you, we have been able to offer comfort care, love and so much more to many residents and their families.
www.TravelMoreCP.com | dlpaul@cruiseplanners.com www.facebook.com/travel dodypaultravelmorecp MAKE HOLIDAY SHOPPING EXCURSIONS SPECIAL As they fulfill the social obligations of the holiday season, many people find themselves spending less time at home. Consumer Reports notes that individuals spend a great deal of time shopping for gifts come the holiday season. Americans engage in 15 hours of shopping on average, with women spending twice as long as their male counterparts (20 hours versus 10). In addition, the average person devotes 10 or more hours to wrapping and returning gifts. Holiday shopping can monopolize people’s time away from home during the months of November and December, and some shoppers wonder how they become so disconnected from other activities, including family time, that they cherish throughout the rest of the year. One way to tackle holiday shopping without sacrificing time with family and friends is to make holiday shopping a social event. DID YOU KNOW? As holiday shopping season kicks into high gear, retailers who use apps and mobile responsive websites to reach more customers may benefit by making a concerted effort to reach older shoppers. According to Nielsen’s Mobile Measurement, 26 percent of the more than 100 million mobile shoppers are 55 and older, while an additional 40 percent are between the ages of 25 and 44. Those figures might surprise some retailers who are quick to associate mobile shopping with digital-native Millennials. Nielsen’s Fourth-Quarter 2014 Mobile Multicultural Insights report even noted that Hispanics are more inclined to shop via mobile than non-Hispanic, white smartphone owners. Retailers may also be interested to know that more and more shoppers are turning to apps instead of websites to do their shopping. Between the fourth quarter of 2013 and the fourth quarter of 2014, Nielsen reports that 101.4 million smartphone users accessed a shopping app. By the fourth quarter of 2015, that figure had risen to 109.9 million users.

What is Cold Laser Therapy? Cold laser therapy is low-intensity laser therapy that stimulates healing while using low levels of light. The technique is called “cold” laser therapy because the low levels of light aren’t enough to heat your body’s tissue. During this procedure, different wavelengths and outputs of low-level light are applied directly to a targeted area. Body tissue absorbs the light. Red and nearinfrared light cause a reaction, and damaged cells respond with a reaction that promotes regeneration. It’s also used to help reduce swelling and promote healing of the joints and soft tissue. • neck pain • ligament sprains • lower back pain • muscle strains • knee pain • tendonitis • pain associated with • bursitis muscle spasms • tennis elbow It’s also used to help reduce swelling and promote healing of the joints and soft tissue.

The procedure is painless and noninvasive. Each treatment typically takes only a few minutes.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) That change in holiday travel plans might be more vexing than you’d expected. But try to take it in stride. Also, it couldn’t hurt to use that Aries charm to coax out some helpful cooperation. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your Bovine determination helps you deal with an unforeseen complication. And, as usual, you prove that when it comes to a challenge, you have what it takes to take it on. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although a romantic theme dominates much of the week, all those warm and fuzzy feelings don’t interfere with the more pragmatic matters you need to take care of. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Best not to ignore those doubts about an upcoming decision. Instead, recheck the facts you were given to make sure nothing important was left out. A weekend surprise awaits you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) No time for a catnap -- yet. You might still have to straighten out one or two factors so that you can finally assure yourself of the truth about a troubling workplace situation. Stay with it. VIRGO (August 23 September 22) News from an old friend could lead to an unexpected (but nonetheless welcome) reunion with someone who had once been very special in your life. Be open to the possibilities. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It might be time for a family council. The sooner those problems are resolved, the sooner you can move ahead with your holiday preparations. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Take some time out to give more attention to a personal relationship that seems to be suffering from a sense of emotional neglect. Provide that much-needed reassurance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Cheer up. That unusual circumstance that might faze most people can be handled pretty well by the savvy Sagittarian. Look at it as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Someone you believe has hurt you in the past might now need your help. Reaching out could be difficult. But the generous Goat will be able to do the right thing, as always. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Prioritizing is an important part of your preholiday scheduling. Try to give time both to your workday responsibilities and those personal matters you might have neglected. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) With the vestiges of your anger about that painful incident fading, you can now focus all your energy on the more positive aspects of your life, including that personal situation. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of bringing your own strong sense of reassurance to others and encouraging them to hope.

STAY SAFE WHEN STRINGING HOLIDAY LIGHTS Employ the buddy system. When stringing lights, always work with at least one other person. This makes it safe for homeowners who must climb ladders to string lights on especially tall trees and/or on their home exteriors.

WAYS TO IM PROVE INDOOR AIR QUALITY ALL YEAR LONG As w inter w ears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold w eather climates to experience some cabin fever. W inter w eather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear. In addition to contributing to cabin fever, w inter w eather can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. W hile air pollution is something most often associated w ith densely populated cities, the air inside homes is not immune to pollution, especially during long w inters w hen w indow s are often closed for months at a time. Though open w indow s in spring and summer can vastly improve indoor air quality, there are w ays to ensure that air stays fresh and healthy regardless of w hich season it happens to be.

CHRISTMAS TREE VARIETIES
Village of Geneseo
Living Christmas tree, which refers to those with their roots still intact, are popular among eco-conscious holiday enthusiasts. That’s because living trees can be promptly planted after they’ve served their purpose indoors.
REAL ESTATE SECTION
South Hill Apartments
Opt for a moderately sized tree, as root balls on larger trees can be heavy and difficult to move. Living trees can typically be kept indoors for around seven to 10 days before they will need to be returned outside. Move such trees to a sheltered outdoor area for one to two weeks so they can reacclimate to the climate. So long as the ground is not frozen, trees can then be planted when the reacclimation period ends. Better Homes and Gardens suggests selecting a mild day to plant the tree.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 13, 1577, English seaman Francis Drake sets out from Plymouth, England, with five ships and 164 men on a mission to raid Spanish holdings on the Pacific coast of the New World. Three years later, Drake’s return to Plymouth marked the first circumnavigation of the earth by a British explorer. * On Dec. 10, 1901, the first Nobel Prizes are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, on the fifth anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite and other explosives. It is believed that Nobel created the prizes out of moral regret over the increasingly lethal uses of his inventions in war. * On Dec. 14, 1911, Norwegian Roald Amundsen becomes the first explorer to reach the South Pole, beating his British rival, Robert Falcon Scott, by more than a month. Amundsen used sleigh dogs, while Scott employed motor sledges, ponies and dogs.
5 Important Medicare Changes Coming For 2020 (NAPS)—If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, or are considering one, you will have more plan choices with a wider range of benefits to help you better manage your day-to-day health needs during this year’s open enrollment period. Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period, which runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, gives Medicare enrollees a chance to revisit their Medicare insurance coverage, make sure it still fits their needs and make changes for the coming year. Online health insurance broker eHealth outlines five of the most important Medicare changes to be aware of this year: 1. New benefits to help those with chronic illness. Starting in January, 2020, some Medicare Advantage Plans will include benefits for people with chronic illness that will help to support their care. A few examples include nutrition services, transportation to doctor’s appointments and home improvements like shower grips and wheelchair access. More traditional services like dental care, vision care and hearing aids also have been expanded. 2. Medicare Advantage premiums will be lower next year. The average monthly premium for Medicare Advantage plans is expected to be $23 in 2020, a decrease of 14% from an average of $26.87 in 2019, and down 28 percent since 2017. The average Medicare Advantage premium this year is the lowest it’s been since 2007. 3. Part D drug plan premiums will be lower, too. The average Medicare prescription drug plan premium for 2020 is $30, a decline of 13.5% as compared with 2019 costs. Savings on out-of-pocket costs may be available as well. A recent eHealth analysis of people using eHealthMedicare.com to compare Medicare plans found that fewer than one in ten were enrolled in the lowest cost plan for their personal prescription drug regimen. Those who switched to their optimal drug plan stood to save an average of $900 per year. 4. Seeing a doctor without leaving home will get easier. Many seniors will have access to Medicare Advantage telehealth benefits to connect with health care providers online or by phone. For 2020, more than half of all Medicare Advantage plans will offer added telehealth benefits, reaching up to about 1.7 million enrollees. 5. Medigap plan options are changing. Two of the most popular supplemental plans (so-called Medigap plans) used by those enrolled in original Medicare—Plan F and Plan C—will no longer be available to new Medicare members or those born after January 1, 1955. Fortunately, Plan G, another Medigap policy, offers the same level of coverage provided by Plan F—minus the Part B deductible—and will continue to be available after January 2020. The Part B deductible was $185 in 2019. Even if you’re happy with your Medicare coverage, eHealth recommends that you review your current coverage during open enrollment because each year plans can and do make changes in costs, physician networks or drug benefits. Now’s the time to decide which Medicare Advantage plan is best for you.

“Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright. At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast. They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.” (Proverbs 23:29-36) “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:” (Colossians 3:5) For further help, write: Burke Hill Bible Church, P. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Holidays got you stressed? Take a breathing break. Deep belly breaths, sometimes called “focus breaths,” can lower blood pressure, calm stress-induced heart rate and induce a relaxation response. Simply sit or lie down somewhere safe and close your eyes. Breathe in deeply, and let your belly rise with the inhalation. Breathe out slowly and evenly.

MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Create an eco-friendly party theme. Many holiday parties have themes. For example, “ugly sweater parties” have become so popular that many clothing manufacturers now intentionally produce colorful sweaters that might otherwise draw the ire of fashionistas. Hosts planning to throw an ugly sweater party can easily transform such festivities into something more eco-friendly by encouraging guests to purchase their sweaters from thrift stores. A Christmas tree planting party is another eco-friendly party theme that can benefit the planet and revitalize local forests at a time of year when they might be depleted due to the demand for natural Christmas trees.

2019 Grammy Award Nominee, Victor Wainwright, Rocks Geneseo By Amanda Dudek
O
n the evening of Saturday, November 16th, Victor Wainwright and the Train, a 2019 Grammy nominee, thundered into Geneseo’s Riviera Theater, courtesy of Fanatics Pub/Jim Shelly Promotions. Seats were sold out with standing room only in the beautifully restored theater venue. Opening artist, Owen Eichensehr, with his upbeat, eclectic blend of blues, folk, funk, jam, jazz and rock, was very well received. Next, the Train took the stage, featuring Billy Dean on drums, percussion and vocals, Terrence Grayson on bass and vocals, Pat Harrington on guitar and vocals as well as special guests Mark Earley on the sax and Doug Woolverton on the trumpet. Guests grooved to their scintillating sound as the flowing rhythm of the Train showcased the musicians in turn, each outstanding in his own right. Hailing from Florida, Billy Dean expertly emcees the crowd while driving the band forward in seemingly effortless rhythm. The nine-year Victor Wainwright and the Train veteran, Dean’s dynamic drumming style has topped Billboards and lit up stages across the United States and beyond. Terrence Grayson of Jackson, Mississippi, cut his musical teeth playing songs in church before falling in love with the full, powerful sounds of the bass. Early in his musical career, Grayson fell sway to the groovy, intoxicating blues, eventually incorporating elements of soul, R&B, rock & roll, funk and roots music into his vibe. Guitarist Pat Harrington from our nearby Gasport, New York, is perhaps the newest member of the Train, joining the group in 2016. His exciting guitar leads and improvised riffs promise to add fuel to the Train’s fire as it charges ahead, onward and upward.
Mark Earley on the sax and Doug Woolvertoon on the trumpet thrill the crowd! Courtesy of Matt Zahn Photography.
That evening, the Train continued to play, preparing the crowd for none other than Victor Wainwright, talented and surprisingly youthful composer, producer, songwriter, vocalist, and awardwinning entertainer and piano player. He has won as slew of prestigious awards, including six Blues Music Awards, such as multiple BMA Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year awards, a BMA Entertainer of the Year Award and a BMA Band of the Year Award. He soared to the Top 10 in the US Billboard Top Blues Album chart in 2013 and in 2016, won the B. B. King Entertainer of the Year Award. This year, Victor Wainwright and the Train became a Grammy nominee for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Upon his introduction, Victor Wainwright paused at the front of the theater to fist-bump a young audience member before jauntily heading down an aisle to sit at his electric piano under the cool blue lights of the stage. Immediately, his fingers began finding melodies as he welcomed the enthusiastic crowd. He praised the

Train, noting how good they sounded and joking that he “hoped they would let [him] sit in!” Wainwright and the crowd vibed and joked like old friends in what he referred to as, “a new location with a familiar crowd,” before launching into “I’ll Start Tomorrow,” an uproarious, boogie-woogie infused hit from his 2018 album, “Victor Wainwright and the Train.” Wainwright’s hands flew up and down the keyboard, skillfully driving the melody as the likewise talented vocalist sang the song’s story with hilarious facial expression and inflection. He riffed and improvised, never missing a beat or a key, even when he tipped his keyboard sideways to play alongside guitarist Harrington. The song concluded to thunderous applause as did each song throughout the night. Wainwright transitioned effortlessly from upbeat, honky-tonk jams to the rhythmic rolls of brooding blues, slow and glorious, and back again. His hands were lightening, striking, rolling and sliding so quickly yet correctly, one is left wondering how so much talent can exist in one person. Wainwright himself is ever humble, offering as one of his original songs a tribute to B. B. King for whom he once opened at the Peabody Theater. Yet, he seems destined to leave his own mark on the blues music scene as he continues to reinvent and redefine its meaning and its possibilities. MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Get rid of your old holiday lights. Still using the same Christmas lights you used in 1995? Such lights are likely incandescent bulbs that are considerably less efficient than today’s LED Christmas lights. The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy notes that LED lights consume 75 percent less energy and last 25 times longer than incandescent lighting. In addition, the OEERE says that LED holiday lights are easier to install and that as many as 25 strings of lights can be connected end-to-end without overloading a wall socket.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I received the first dose of Shingrix this week and had pretty severe side effects, though in the range of what can be expected: high fever (101.5), intense shivering, a severe headache and 12 hours of extreme fatigue. The entire reaction began 11 hours after the shot and ended 18 hours after that. I am 61 and in excellent health, taking only 25 mcg of levothyroxine daily. I have a few questions that I hope you can answer. I’ve tried looking at the clinical trial results for Shingrix, but I am not qualified to understand the information as presented. 1. Is it likely that I’ll have a similar (or worse?) reaction to the second shot? The package insert says one can react to the first, second, neither or both. 2. Are both injections identical? 3. When I had chickenpox as a child, I was way sicker than the average kid. Related? 4. If I get shingles, do I have a higher risk for a severe case? -- J.G. ANSWER: Compared with the previous one-time vaccine Zostavax, the new two-dose Shingrix vaccine is much more effective. However, it does have a higher risk of side effects. You have had the most common side effect, though only 10% of people will have symptoms as bad as yours. These symptoms are caused by your body mounting an inflammatory response to the glycoprotein in the vaccine (the new vaccine does not contain a live virus). You clearly have a robust system to fight off infection. To answer your questions in order: You are at higher risk for a similar reaction for the second shot. I would plan your day accordingly, and premedicate with Tylenol (even though it may make the vaccine slightly less effective). The second vaccine is identical to the first. I have read reports that there have been shortages of the vaccine. Chickenpox and shingles can affect you both by the virus attacking you and by an exuberant inflammatory and immune reaction. I would guess that you are at lower risk for viral complications (such as infection of the eye, brain or lungs) but at higher risk for symptoms due to your own system, such as high fever. In many cases, the body’s response to infection can be as damaging as the infection itself. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year I was treated for gout and was

prescribed allopurinol (100 mg) once a day. Approximately five to six months after I started taking it, I became lethargic and was not feeling myself (I am a very young 77 years old) and suddenly lost my sense of taste. I was taken off the medicine and still have little taste sensation other than citrus fruits, apples and spices. I was told that this could last for months, years or forever. Do you have any suggestions for me? I am eating as before, hoping that I will recover my taste. -- N.K. ANSWER: I certainly found that allopurinol can cause loss of taste sensation, but the Food and Drug Administration case reports don’t say how long it can last. Unfortunately, I can’t find any reliable way (or even plausible way) to increase the likelihood of getting your taste sensation back. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

Wisdom Teeth Wisdom teeth are always the last teeth to typically erupt in the mouth. Although your teen’s mouth may seem big enough to accommodate them, most often it is not. As soon as it is clear that the wisdom teeth, technically known as third molars, will not grow in normally, they should be removed. Early removal of the wisdom teeth lessens the risk that your teen will experience impacted or partial eruption, and the complications that often result. CHRISTMAS TREES BRIGHTEN THE SEASON Decked out in tinsel, lights, ornaments, and garland, Christmas trees are enduring symbols of the holiday season that boast a rich history. Evergreen trees have been used to celebrate winter festivals for thousands of years, and eventually became associated with Christianity. Plants and trees that remained green all year held special meaning to ancient peoples, and were purported to keep away illness and evil spirits. Germans were credited with tying evergreen trees to Christmas celebrations. In the sixteenth century, devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, is believed to have first added lighted candles to these trees after he was inspired by twinkling stars in the night sky. While early Americans found Christmas trees an oddity, the tradition, brought over by German settlers, eventually caught on. Today, between 25 and 30 million natural Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year, states the National Christmas Tree Association. Trees are grown in all 50 states and Canada. Ed Sparks Jr. “Uncle Brat” “Boss Man” December 1, 2019 Livonia: Ed passed peacefully at his home in Livonia, NY on December 1, 2019 surrounded by loving family and friends. Predeceased by his mother Marie Sparks, sister Rhea Sparks, and special friend T.J. Peck. He is survived by his father Ed Sparks Sr. of Conesus, brother Rob (Trish) Sparks of Livonia, nephews Joshua Sparks (Alana Blakemore) and Brenden (Morgan) Sparks, and his great-niece, who he loved to spend time with, Ryland Sparks. Ed is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, his EMS family, and his canine sidekick Athena. Ed Sparks served as the Director of Operations of the Livonia Ambulance for over 10 years. He was not only the Director of Operations, he was a great man who dedicated his life to the squad and the community that it serves. He started in EMS in 1994 where he joined to drive the ambulance, but soon after decided that there was more that he could do to help those in need. He became an EMT and over several years worked his way up through the EMS levels of care achieving his Paramedic Certification in August of 2012. Throughout Ed’s career in EMS he helped countless individuals and personally saved many lives. In the “quiet” time of serving the community, Ed enjoyed spending time with his Great Dane sidekick Athena, having late night dinners at the bay with his family and friends, or relaxing at home watching Law and Order SVU. “2961 - you’re finally 10-7 and 10-42 may you be at peace for all of eternity – end of watch – God speed – we will take it from here.” Family and friends may call on Friday, December 6th, from 3-7pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 20A, Livonia, NY. Ed’s Funeral Service will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, December 7th, at the United Methodist Church of Livonia, 21 Summers Street, Livonia, NY. Burial will follow at Arnold Cemetery, Conesus, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Livonia Ambulance, PO Box 8, Livonia, NY 14487.
Because We Care by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
FINAL DECISIONS Preplanning your funeral entitles you to make the final decisions about the type of funeral and burial you want. Doing so spares your surviving relatives the emotional stress of making difficult decisions related to your funeral, burial, or cremation. It is important to make your preferences known after giving these matters careful consideration. Otherwise, those you leave behind will be burdened with the monumental decisions regarding how you would like your body disposed of, where you might wish to be buried, and other vital details affecting your relatives’ own lives for years to come. While we may not know what life has in store, we can anticipate and prepare for its finality. During our lives we plan for education, having a family, vacations, weddings and retirement. We purchase insurance to help us in situations that may happen, such as accidents, earthquakes, fire, floods and theft. We should also consider the pre-planning of our funeral service as it not only lets our survivors know what our wishes are, but it can also avoid financial hardship. If you have more questions about our funeral services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. Thankful for all Caregivers. Being a Caregiver is a very hard, stressful, demanding job whether it be for a family member or in a professional capacity. The physical, emotional and financial consequences for the family caregiver can be very overwhelming. If you know someone who is a Caregiver, consider offering This is directed to the one who ranted about others handling someone’s wheelchair without permission. You said that doing so is considered assault. Does this include someone touching my hearing aids? I have had someone reach out to touch them for one reason or another. Would I be right in calling the police next time someone did this? As I was pulling into a parking space at [local store] in [local town], I saw a dog in a vehicle that clearly was in distress. I sat there for approximately 5 minutes and decided to call 911 as the car was probably extremely hot inside. After another 10 minutes and still no cop, the owner came out. I exchanged words with her, and much to my dismay, she said she was only in the store for two minutes. These people who GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

to sit with their loved one so they can have a couple hours to themselves. Give them the opportunity to go out to lunch or have coffee with a friend, do some unhurried shopping, pamper themselves at the hairdresser or barbershop or take a relaxing bath. Just let them get away and take some time for themselves. If this is not possible, offer to do the grocery shopping, take items to the dry cleaners, help with the house cleaning, shovel the driveway or whatever would be helpful. Caregivers often feel isolated and lonely. Just being there for the caregiver, who is giving all of themselves to the one they are caring for, is so important.
I was having a bad day and went into the Mexican restaurant, Rancho Viejo on Ellicott St. in Batavia, and a young male waiter spontaneously paid for my meal. As I left the restaurant, we hugged.
Thank you to all the cheerful employees doing any kind of customer service during the holidays. I know from firsthand experience how difficult it can be to stay positive throughout this stressful retail season and service season. Thank you for making everyone’s day a little more jolly!
I would like to thank the Christmas Angel who paid the remaining balance of my layaway at Walmart. It is very much appreciated! Thank you so much for giving my family and myself an amazing Christmas. Bless you and your family this holiday season. I will be paying it forward in the future. Thank you!
Thank you to the Lady Braves volleyball coaches for a great, positive season! And to the parents for organizing a fabulous banquet at the end to celebrate. Everything was great from the photos to the food. Kudos!

I was only sorry that the cop never showed up during this time so this woman could have been charged with animal cruelty and perhaps even had her sweet little puppy taken from her!

people genuinely trying to be kind to you. I also have offered assistance to people in wheelchairs and not because, as you put it, I “feel sorry” for them. I try to help anyone who may need assistance. I have offered elderly persons help finding their car in a parking lot, assisted a person shorter than I in reaching a high shelf in a grocery store or even a child struggling to open a door. You see, there are people in this world who just want to be kind. Please don’t assume that, as you put it, you are “an object for pity” or that they are dwelling on the fact you are in a wheelchair. Next time, please just say, “No thank you,” and be grateful that there are still kind people in this world.
