THE COMPLETE FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

INDICATORS IT’S TIME TO CHANGE AIR FILTERS Vehicle maintenance can protect drivers’ investments and help their automobiles run efficiently. One area drivers should pay particular attention to is their vehicles’ air filters. When operating at optimal capacity, an air filter improves fuel efficiency while ensuring vehicles accelerate smoothly without taxing the engine. But when air filters are clogged, fuel efficiency is reduced and emissions are increased, a 1-2 punch that costs motorists money and hurts the planet at the same time. Drivers can check their owners’ manuals to determine the recommended intervals to replace air filters, but the following are a handful of indicators that suggest it’s time to change them. Gas mileage: Unless you just purchased your vehicle, you likely know how many miles you can drive on a full tank of gas. If that gas mileage is suddenly slipping and you find yourself visiting the filling station more frequently, then it might be time to replace your air filter. Engine light: Drivers may be alerted to engine issues when the “Check engine” lights up on the vehicle’s dashboard. This light may come on to indicate a problem with the air filter, as clogged air filters reduce air flow to the engine, resulting in an imbalanced air-fuel mixture that adversely affects the engine. Starting and idling problems: Vehicles sometimes don’t start up as smoothly as they once did, and drivers may also notice vehicles are not idling smoothly. These symptoms may indicate misfiring spark plugs that are being polluted (and made less effective) by a dirty air filter that is reducing the flow of air to the engine. Acceleration difficulties: Automobiles that are operating at peak capacity accelerate quickly. But dirty, worn out air filters adversely affect acceleration. Drivers who notice that their cars are struggling to accelerate when stoplights turn green or on highways may need to replace their vehicles’ air filters. Dirty air filter: Perhaps the biggest indicator that an air filter needs to be replaced is the filter itself. If you cannot find the air filter on your own, consult your vehicle owner’s manual to determine where it is. Once you find the air filter, examine it in broad daylight. Clean air filters are white, so if the filter has darkened, it may need to be replaced. AUTOMOTIVE

SPORTS QUIZ By Chris Richcreek

Refresh Your Home for Spring Eliminate the extras While you’re freshening up the house, it’s the perfect time to purge unwanted and unused items, but remember that items in good condition can actually do good for those in need. By donating clothing, electronics, furniture, household goods and vehicles to be sold in The Salvation Army Family and Thrift Stores, you can help transform lives in your local community. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in the last year and it doesn’t have special sentimental value, it’s probably time to let it go.

Well, as it turns out, w hile even a quic k, eyeball roof-c hec k is recommended this time of year, there’s a fallback option. You could just check your attic instead. “ Roofs ac tually c reate an insulated barrier that helps trap heat inside, and most attic spaces are located right below them,” explains Jason Joplin, program manager of the Center for the Advanc ement of Roofing Excellence. “ That makes them perfect for spotting potential problem areas and damage w ithout w orrying about falling.”

Perhaps it’s time to create that master bedroom suite you long have admired or install that wrap-around porch? What is the first thing that should be done before getting down to business? The correct way to begin a home remodeling project is to obtain the necessary permits for the job. Many municipalities request individuals obtain permits for a range of work on homes or other structures, such as office buildings. Permits are generally required for all new construction as well as specific modifications that will affect structural, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems. It’s important to check with the local building office prior to beginning work to see which permits you will need before the project can begin. Permits are necessary whether a homeowner is doing the work or hiring an outside contractor. Due to the cost and time involved with securing permits, some homeowners skip this step so they can begin a project promptly. However, this can end up being a costly mistake. Many homes do not have space for guest rooms, kids’ play areas and home theater lounges that are possible in homes with substantial square footage. But they may not be missing out at all. While large homes remain popular, many people are embracing the benefits of smaller residences. Small homes help owners save money, require less maintenance, have smaller environmental impact, and reduce the temptation to accumulate “stuff.” Owners of small homes or apartments can still enjoy the benefits of larger spaces, they just need to equip rooms to perform double duty.

One of the easiest ways to reduce the risk of falls is to improve lighting around the home. The National Institutes of Health state that adequate lighting is important at entrances to the home, stairways, hallways, and other frequently traversed areas. Make sure lighting fixtures are using the highest wattage light bulb allowed. Artificial lighting sources become even more vital in fall and autumn, when natural light is less abundant in a home. In addition, install lighting outdoors by the front door, over the garage and where garbage pails are stored to facilitate safe passage. Page 15

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) There could be some negative reaction to your tough stance when making a recent decision. But overall, your efforts result in well-earned recognition and all that can follow from that. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your financial situation seems confusing, even for the fiscally savvy Bovine. Maybe it’s the conflicting advice you’re getting. Check it out before things get too tangled to unknot. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A relaxed attitude goes a long way in helping you deal with any of life’s irritants that might be popping up this week. You’re also a reassuring role model for others in the same situation. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your aspect favors creativity, which should persuade you to work on your artistic projects. If time is a problem, prioritize your commitments so that your work isn’t compromised. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Scrutinize all the job offers that interest you. Most are honest and worth considering. But a few might not be completely forthcoming about what the job is and what the salary and benefits are. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unexpected snafu could delay the completion of a project you’re eager to finish. Find out what’s causing it, fix it, and if you need help, don’t be shy about asking for it. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An idea that could be helpful to you comes from an unlikely source. Listen to it. Discuss it. If necessary, adjust it. If it looks as if it might work out quite well, go ahead and use it. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be careful about allowing someone to share a very personal secret with you. This could cause problems down the line with others who are involved in that person’s private life. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A cooling down of a relationship could be the result of neglect, unintended or not. To save it from icing over, you need to warm it up with a large dose of hot Sagittarius passion. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good time to get involved with a number of family matters that involve money and other issues that might jeopardize the closeness between and among family members. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Cheer up. That difficult person who appears to be deliberately stalling your project might just need to be reassured of the value she or he brings to it. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Good news! Expect to feel re-energized now that you’ve gone through that stressful energydepleting period involving a lot of changes. Now, go out there and show them what you can do. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a warm, giving nature that inspires many to follow your example. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

A poem about saying goodbye to your four-legged friend

GRYFFIN That border collie stare, peering into my soul, crossing the lines of communication where no words are necessary-how well you knew me, tolerated me, like a besotted lover but ever more faithful. Over the years, as the house emptied, we formed an alliance you and I syncing our gaits, comfortable in our routine. We watched each other’s hair turn gray, more amused than alarmed, each night holding the inevitable at bay with our playtime antics: hide and go seek (you never did learn to check the front coat closet) and running the inside track in the living room-catch me if you can! --an amusing sight, I’m sure, for anyone passing by the picture window. Immortal youngsters we, puppies at heart, until that Monday morning when you and my world suddenly collapsed.

At the vets, you lay quietly, obediently, still the gentleman you always were, chin resting heavily on white paws (four, like socks), a tired sphinx awaiting the quick needle prick-too quick!-me, caressing and crooning, tears flowing, your betrayer, Judas with a kiss. Four quick huffs, your familiar warm breath gracing my hand, then nothing. I wait, unsure. Those eyes--still liquid, still warm, still lingering on my face. Border collie stare, piercing my soul. Did you know? DID YOU KNOW? That I did it for love?

GO GREEN WITH YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE Walk, run or ride to the gym. Many people get the bulk, if not the entirety, of their exercise at a gym. For those who live outside of major cities, that likely involves driving to and from a gym before and after workouts. Instead of driving, consider walking, running or riding to the gym. Each option provides great cardiovascular exercise that can reduce or replace the time people spend on treadmills or elliptical machines. And cutting back on driving reduces fuel consumption and auto emissions, greatly benefitting the planet.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Cancer Treatments Kill Not Cure, Friends Say ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a relative with cancer who is about to begin multiple therapeutic interventions. My friends tell me that all cancer treatments are toxic and kill people instead of curing them, and that I should tell my relative to look into other forms of treatment. What do you suggest I do? -- K.C. ANSWER: There are hundreds of different types of cancer, and they vary widely in their capacity to grow and damage the individual, and in their response to treatment. For decades, this has meant mostly surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, but now includes newer treatments, including immune therapy. While not all cancers are curable in everybody, every year brings sometimes incremental, sometimes dramatic improvements in life expectancy for individual cancers. Some cancers that were rapidly fatal even a few years ago are now curable in most cases. Getting the right diagnosis quickly and getting to an expert in treating that cancer are critical to having the best chance of a good outcome. Treating some cancers remains difficult, and in many cases the treatments have significant side effects. Surgery scars may impair function, and chemotherapy can cause severe symptoms and may permanently affect body systems, as can radiation. It can be very hard on a family member observing these treatments, and if his or her loved one nevertheless succumbs eventually to the cancer, it is understandable to think the suffering the person went through was in vain. So, while I understand where your friends may be coming from, their well-meaning advice, based on bad experiences possibly a long time ago, might cause your relative with cancer to delay the potentially lifesaving treatments that are available now. A study published in July 2018 showed that people who use alternative medical treatments for cancer are less likely to be cured and have a shorter life expectancy. My advice is that you encourage your relative to find the most expert cancer treatment available. It’s up to your relative to accept the recommendations of the expert, but delaying the best available treatment in order to consider unproven therapies is likely to result in harm. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have had the same problem forever: I don’t understand why buttermilk coffee creamer seems to get outdated faster than regular creamer. Does the butter in it have anything to do with this? -- C.H. ANSWER: Buttermilk doesn’t have butter in it. It was so named because it was originally made with what was left after separating butter from the unhomogenized cream that had been allowed to ferment with airborne bacteria, making it slightly acidic. Modern cultured buttermilk is made from pasteurized, homogenized milk, usually 1% to 2% fat, and inoculated with healthy bacteria, which makes lactic acid from the sugars in the milk. This acid makes buttermilk resistant to the unhealthy bacteria that causes spoilage. It also causes a slight sour taste, which some people like and others don’t. Commercial heavy cream, and coffee creamers made from heavy cream, have a very long shelf life largely because they are pasteurized at ultra-high temperatures, so they last even longer than buttermilk. The high fat content also retards bacteria growth. Both buttermilk-based and cream-based creamers will stay good longer than their expiration date. Your nose is very good for telling when it has gone bad. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Dan Ripley, Beloved Local Musician, Receives Life-Saving Kidney By Amanda Dudek

I

n April 2019, Dan Ripley received the concerning news that he would require a kidney transplant in the immediate future.

Ripley had struggled with kidney health all his life. When he was quite young, he was struck by a car, and as a result, he lost part of his spleen. This impacted his immune system and wellness as the spleen supports several other organs and body systems. Then when he was twelve years old, Ripley was diagnosed with Berger’s Disease, a disease which damages the kidneys over time and can ultimately result in kidney failure. Even so, Ripley did not experience many symptoms for most of his life. In fact, he only began noticing a few initial symptoms in his late 20s. As time went on, however, Ripley’s kidneys slowly declined. A fighter, he became determined to do everything he could to improve his kidney health. Ripley did a great deal of research. He changed his diet significantly and put a lot of work and effort into maintaining his health. Nevertheless, his numbers continued to decline. The situation became desperate when Ripley suddenly became very sick. “He got a virus,” said Ripley’s niece, Ashleigh Lang. “All of a sudden, it became an infection in his lymph nodes, and his kidneys failed.”

Laura Williams sent friend, Dan Ripley, this photo to let him know she was approved to donate her kidney to him!

Ripley was started on dialysis. “During this time, he had been posting on Facebook about his need for a kidney,” recalled Lang. “The doctors were telling him the wait could be up to seven years before he could find a deceased donor.” Meanwhile, the dialysis

was wearing on Ripley. “It really affected him a lot and made him tired,” said Lang. “He was still working at the time, as well.” Dan Ripley of Dan Ripley Live makes his living as a local musician, a “local legend of sorts,” singing at local bars, venues and each year at the Hemlock Fair. “He began dialysis last fall and was even going to dialysis before performing in the evenings,” shared Lang. “A number of people volunteered for testing, including many of our family members, but we weren’t coming up with any matches.” Then, in mid-December, motocross lovers Laura and Dave Williams reached out to Ripley, a lifelong motocross enthusiast, and invited him over for dinner. At dinner, they told him that Laura had tested positive as a match to be his kidney donor! At that time, there was no guarantee as she was still in the final stages of testing, but still, it was exciting news! “The testing is extensive,” explained Lang. “She had gone through some of the harder tests, but she hadn’t been approved yet. Her husband had also tested positive as a donor for my uncle, and Dave was prepared to go through with it if Laura couldn’t.” Although Ripley knew the Williams, having raced together and always been friendly, he was still amazed. “He never expected this,” said Lang. “It was such a selfless thing she did.”

she had been cleared for surgery. Within a week, the transplant was scheduled. On January 29th, only 20 days later, Dan Ripley and Laura Williams participated in the kidney transplant surgery that was to change Dan Ripley’s life. “My uncle said his kidneys are working better than they have Local musician, Dan Ripley, is now in over 30 years!” on his way to recovery after a enthused Lang. While successful kidney transplant. both are still in pain and the road to recovery is long, both patients are doing very well. As Ripley continues his journey to recovery, his family, including Lang, are hosting a Spaghetti dinner to raise funds for his cost of living expenses during the several months he will be unable to work. The benefit dinner will take place on Saturday, March 7th from 4:00pm-9:00pm at the Lakeville Training Grounds. $20 will purchase dinner and a drink, and the event will include live music by Grammynominated artist, Mike Brown – Dan Ripley hopes to sing a song or two, as well – door prizes, a 50/50 and raffles which may include an autographed Kenny Chesney guitar which has been generously donated. “At first, it was happening so fast, it blew us all away,” shared Lang. “Now, we have gained a greater appreciation for people like Laura. There are so many people who care about my Uncle Dan and his music. It is so inspiring for us to see how much people love him and how much the community has rallied already in support of him.” For more information or to contribute donations and raffle contributions, contact Ashleigh Lang at ashleighlang15@gmail.com. Dan Ripley’s music is available on iTunes, Amazon, and CD Baby.

REAL ESTATE SECTION

DID YOU KNOW? Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision.

1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL DRIVING VACATION: Be firm with departure times. Make a plan to leave at a particular hour and stick to it. This will help to keep the trip on schedule.

3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.

PARENTS SAY THEY’RE ‘YODA’ ABOUT FINANCES

Stop in for Lunch and Dinner Specials!

(NAPSI)—Parents identify with Yoda more than other Star Wars characters when it comes to family finances—according to a survey by New York Life. Yoda is patient, uses past experiences to guide future decisions and finds it important to teach the next generation. Yet, many parents aren’t following Yoda’s most famous saying “Do. Or do not. There is no try” when it comes to taking the most basic step to secure their family’s finances: buying life insurance. Research continues to show that parents recognize the value of life insurance in protecting their family but haven’t been able to “Do.”

Open 7 Days a Week!

Here are four common reasons (and the reality): 1. It is hard to get started—Not anymore. Companies are doing a better job at providing simple information and financial tools on their websites. For example, on New York Life’s site, you can now create a plan around what’s most important to you and access educational material to help you get started. 2.

I have it at work and that is enough—Not really. Life insurance through work is very beneficial but typically covers one year of your salary. If you were to die, that benefit could run out quickly. Experts agree that most people need 10 or more years of their salary covered by life insurance.

You may find that a combination of permanent and term insurance is best for you. To start planning for your family’s future, visit the Agent Locator at www. newyorklife.com.

My life could change—Not to worry. Whether you change jobs, have more children, welcome your parents back under your roof or need to pay for college, your life insurance plan can change, too. A professional life insurance agent can help you build a strategy that provides the flexibility you need.

If your needs are long term, a permanent policy (most commonly whole life) might be the best option. In addition to the insurance protection, you build up cash value within the policy that grows on a tax-deferred basis and, if structured properly, can be accessed tax-free. If needed, the cash value can be accessed via loans to help pay for a child’s education or any other important financial need (though loans accrue interest and reduce cash value and death benefit).

I can’t afford it—You probably can. People are surprised when they find out how affordable life insurance can be. While having a child brings lots of new expenses, life insurance should be at the top of that list so that your child’s plans for the future can stay on track even if the worst were to happen.

Choosing the right type of life insurance depends on your needs. For example, term life insurance is a good place to start if your needs are temporary or short term. It offers affordable coverage for a set period of time.

585-243-0713 DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

If You’re Feeling Down, You’re Not Alone. It’s That Time of Year

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel

(NAPS)—You may have heard the terms—winter blues, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), Depressive Disorder with a Seasonal Pattern. No matter what you call it, with approximately 17.3 million adults in the U.S. experiencing seasonal depression, according to the National Institute of Mental Health, feeling gloomy this time of year isn’t uncommon—but it can be overcome.

* On Feb. 21, 1970, national security adviser Henry Kissinger begins secret peace talks with North Vietnamese representative Le Duc Tho at a villa outside Paris. The North Vietnamese were demanding an unconditional U.S. withdrawal on a fixed date.

The Problem - Depressive Disorder with a Seasonal Pattern (formerly called SAD) can affect anyone of any age. While January and February are the typical peak months for the disorder, symptoms can persist through April, according to Mental Health America.

* On Feb. 20, 1998, American Tara Lipinski wins the gold medal in women’s figure skating at the Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan, becoming the sport’s youngest gold medalist at age 15. * On Feb. 23, 1958, Formula One champion Juan Manuel Fangio of Argentina is kidnapped in Cuba by a group of Fidel Castro’s rebels. Fangio was taken from his Havana hotel the day before the Cuba Grand Prix and was released unharmed after the race ended.

Doctor’s Advice - When that feeling of sadness persists for several weeks, it’s time to take action, according to Dr. Desreen Dudley, a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Behavioral Health Provider of Therapeutic Services for Teladoc Health. “If someone has a few days of feeling low, that’s normal and typically nothing to worry about. It’s when the feeling lingers for weeks and people lose interest in daily activities and suffer persistent negative thoughts, that lend a stronger basis for Depressive Disorder with a Seasonal Affective Pattern diagnosis,” she says. What To Watch For - Other symptoms she warns about are: • Change in appetite • Change in sleep pattern • Decreased energy • Decreased concentration • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt • An inability to think, concentrate, or finish tasks at work or school • Thinking about suicide, self-harm, or death Dr. Dudley contends individuals already struggling with depressive disorders are susceptible to SAD patterns. For older Americans, a Vitamin D deficiency can exacerbate low moods. On the other end of the spectrum, she has worked with newly independent college students who find SAD a heavy burden and say their new responsibilities of classes, exams and jobs can compound their depression. For some, they may be sleeping in more and further limiting their exposure to sunlight. What To Do - In addition to considering therapy, such as virtual care, which is available on your terms and from any location you choose, Dr. Dudley recommends: • Avoiding or cutting back on alcohol and other addictive substances • Eating healthfully—more lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, and eliminating sugar • Daily exercise at least 30 minute a day (walking counts) • Yoga or meditation • Learning about and trying light therapy • Regularly surrounding yourself with those you enjoy being around. When To Seek Help - According to a recent global study conducted by Ipsos MORI for Teladoc Health, individuals often recognize when they’re struggling, but even so, over a third of the respondents who have had one mental health episode admitted to not seeking professional help. The reason? For many, it’s often the difficulty in finding mental health care. “Thankfully, virtual care is becoming increasingly available as a source of convenient mental health care,” Dr. Dudley says. “It eliminates the traditional obstacles of in-person visits and has opened up access for anyone with a busy schedule, individuals who may have difficulty getting out of the house and students who may fear the stigma of walking into the campus mental health clinic.”

How To Avoid Growing Bored In Retirement • Embrace a new hobby. Whether it’s perfecting your golf game, writing that novel, learning to cook like a gourmet chef or whatever else you might have always wanted to do, retirement is a great time to do it. • Volunteer. If a part-time job is not up your alley, then consider volunteering in your community. Volunteers are always in demand, and volunteering with a local charity can provide a sense of purpose and provide opportunities to meet likeminded fellow retirees, all while helping to quell your boredom.

Adopting a Shelter Dog DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read that stray dogs from foreign countries are being put up for adoption here and bringing new diseases with them. My family wants to adopt a dog, but now we’re uncertain about doing so. How can we make sure we’re getting a healthy dog? — Julie in Alexandria, Louisiana DEAR JULIE: You should certainly do some research before taking that super-cute puppy home from a shelter. Rescue shelters have gone through some dramatic changes in the past decade, and perhaps the most notable change is that dogs eligible for adoption are often shipped from a shelter in one region of the country to another region. Dogs from overseas also are being acquired by some shelters as demand for rescue dogs — particularly the “adorable” one or popular breeds — outstrips supply.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

There is little federal regulation — the USDA doesn’t track how many dogs are imported from other countries, for example — and states are only just beginning to tighten rules to ensure the health of dogs shipped across state lines. There are reports of newly adopted dogs developing severe illnesses, including a new strain of canine distemper virus — a highly contagious disease that closely resembles rabies. Here are some important questions you should ask: • Where did the dog come from? Was it surrendered locally, sent from another state or unknown? • Ask for copies of health records. Has the dog been given vaccinations yet? • If the dog comes from another state or country, was it quarantined after arriving (at least 48 hours in some states)? Take the dog you adopt to a veterinarian as soon as possible for a health check and to get any needed vaccines. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE Buying life insurance. Much like various other types of insurance, life insurance can be purchased from an insurance agent or via an insurance company’s website. When choosing a company from which to buy a life insurance policy, look for a company with a strong rating, as no one wants to end up being burned by a life insurance provider who goes out of business. Some people prefer to work with independent brokers who can share information about products from various providers rather than just the ones offered by the firm company-affiliated agents work for.

Dorothy L. Krause Rochester: Formerly of Avon, NY, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2020 at the age of 74, while surrounded by family, after a long illness. She is survived by her children, Patricia (Scott) Heitzenrater and James ( Jennifer) Krause, her grandchildren, Allison and Kerstin; brothers, Richard Murray and Thomas (Shelly) Murray; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends. Dottie was a dedicated Registered Nurse, who worked tirelessly for many years in the Emergency Rooms at both Highland Hospital and Park Ridge Hospital. “No one is more unhappy than he who never had bad luck; he could never test himself...” ~ Seneca We may pity the poor soul who has consistent bad luck but he has one advantage over his fellows who have had nothing but good fortune… he knows that he can survive the worst that fortune has in store for him. A Roman philosopher of the first century, Seneca recognized this seeming paradox. The person upon whom fortune continually smiles is made unhappy by uncertainty. Never having been tested, he wonders how he would manage if his good luck changed to bad. It may help to keep this in mind when we experience a run of bad luck. We have no “standard” service. Each family we serve has unique needs and we tailor our service to meet these. Our best references are from the families we have served.

Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop timesaving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.
