Refresh Your Home for Spring Reorganize cluttered areas If a room (or rooms) in your house are in disarray, start by reorganizing those often-used spaces to give them a like-new look and feel. Begin by removing everything from the room - including the furniture, if you’re able and separate your belongings into boxes or piles based on what you plan to put back in the room, move to another location and throw away or donate. Once you’ve cleaned the space, resituate the necessary furniture then place items you’re keeping back in their places in tidy fashion so they’re easy to locate.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver In Babylon 4,000 years ago, it was accepted practice that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer, and so that time became known as the honey month -- what we know today as the honeymoon.

When the Genesee Valley Penny Saver went from mailing to adult carrier delivery back in 1988, Jim Banker was at our door with interest in delivering a route. That was 32 years ago! Every weekend from 1988 until February of 2020, Jim Banker delivered our paper to residents and businesses in the Livonia & Conesus area. He never missed a weekend in all those years! That’s a dedication and a commitment that is hard to find. We found that with Jim Banker! Jim has decided that it’s time to retire. We will miss not only his great delivery service but the jokes and stories in the carrier room and the great smile he wears every day. DID YOU KNOW? Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

Clare Van Durme of Dansville Says, “Together, We CANN!” By Amanda Dudek

J

ust over 15 years ago in Dansville, Clare Van Durme opened her home to launch C.A.N.N., the Community Answers Needs Network, and bring hope to hundreds of people across Livingston County and beyond. C.A.N.N., a nonprofit endeavor serving under the auspices of the Holy Family Catholic Community, provides necessities such as available clothing and furniture to those with nowhere left to turn. “I started it in my garage,” said Van Durme. “I saw that people had a need for goods, and I thought I could collect items from others and give them to the people who had need of them. I am the middleman!” Once seen, Van Durme’s vision became impossible for her to ignore. “God told me to do this, literally,” she insisted. “I prayed, kept getting this nudge, and I kept balking.” It didn’t take long, however, for Van Durme to embrace her calling, and once she did, she had to figure out exactly how to help. “I didn’t want to start a ministry that was already being done,” she said. She decided to focus on what many of us would consider the basic necessities. “I provide needs, not wants,” said Van Durme, matter-of-factly. When people have been through an emergency situation like a house fire, are displaced, are starting out in a new apartment or have no other resources, C.A.N.N helps provide things like dishes, pots and pans, linens, blankets, furniture, baby items and clothing, including winter items like coats and boots. They also fundraise to purchase such items as new cribs, diapers and underwear. Of course, since C.A.N.N. is completely dependent on donations, all items are subject to availability. “Sometimes, we have beds; sometimes we don’t,” said Van Durme. “Sometimes, we have refrigerators; sometimes, we don’t.” C.A.N.N. quickly outgrew Van Durme’s garage, moving into two stationary semi-trucks before finally moving into the St. Mary’s School building in Dansville, after the school closed. “I am Catholic; that’s my church,” she explained. “So, I work with that.” Van Durme finds her inspiration in Mother Teresa. “She is my person,” she shared. “If I could even emulate one millionth of the person she was, I would be doing well.” In Mother Teresa’s giving spirit, C.A.N.N. does what it can to help everyone, regardless of income, without judgement. “I ask for name, address and how many are in the household,” said Van Durme. “I am doing what God wants me to do, and the rest is up to them. These things were never mine to begin with.” Van Durme noted that C.A.N.N is also keeping items out of

GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

landfills by giving them a second life in a new home. “When I receive a call, I create a bundle of the items needed,” she said. “The person in need is welcome to take or leave whatever is in their bundle.” C.A.N.N. has certainly grown over the last 15 years, assisting over 450 people in need last year. “People used to just show up,” said Van Durme. “Now, I receive phone calls and referrals as other organizations, nonprofits and government services have become familiar with what I do.” Still, she is amazed by how many people do not know about C.A.N.N. Clare Van Durme encourages people to not only spread the word about C.A.N.N. but also to consider volunteering and serving their community. “This world is not just for taking,” she observed. “Serving your community opens your eyes to needs you never knew existed.” On April 6th, C.A.N.N. will host a Penny Social at the Dansville Moose Club. “People love it,” Van Durme enthused. “They say it is the best Penny Social in the area!” C.A.N.N. will also hold a big yard sale on May 15th and 16th, of items beyond necessities which are donated. “With the money we fundraise, we can purchase some necessary items which cannot be used secondhand,” Van Durme stated. For more information or if you have a need, please call Clare Van Durme at (585) 335-6973.

In 1925, Helen Keller asked the Lions to be the “Knights of the Blind.” Since then, the Lions have continually developed programs having to do with sight. The Avon Lions Club participates in a special program to screen children for vision problems that can lead to Amblyopia, commonly referred to as “lazy eye.” Amblyopia is the medical term used when the vision of one eye is reduced because it fails to work properly with the brain. The eye looks normal but for various reasons the brain favors the other eye. Over time the neural cells in the brain responsible for the poor eye do not develop. After age 6, the chances of developing those neural cells in the brain for the poor eye diminish tremendously. Treating Amblyopia involves forcing the child to use the poor eye which stimulates vision in the poor eye and helps the brain develop the neural cells for that eye. The Lions Vision Screening program (Screening Eyes Early [SEE]) focuses on screening children between ages of 6 months and 6 years. The trained volunteer from the Avon Lions Club will screen children’s eyes with a device called a Welch Allyn vision screener. The vision screening process is simple and non-intrusive. No equipment touches the child. The volunteer Lion holds the vision screener approximately 36 inches away from the child. When the child focuses on the screening device’s flashing lights, data is recorded. The vision is a free community project of the Avon Lions Club. For more information, call Lion Don Mastin at 585-330-5635. HOMETOWN Events in this issue have towns and dates where the screening will be done.

SAFELY AVOID POTENTIAL WINTER HAZARDS Exercise extra caution when driving on roadways during the winter, as they may contain ice or snow. All it takes is a small coating of precipitation on roadways to make driving treacherous. Wetlooking roadways may be wet, or they may be covered by ice, and it’s difficult to tell the difference with the naked eye. Always slow down and assume you are driving on ice. Make every effort to improve visibility. This includes checking windshield washer fluid levels and ensuring windshield blades are in good working order.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

In addition to choosing the right foods, health-conscious individuals must choose the right methods to prepare those foods in order to maximize their nutritional value. Cooking methods such as frying can make for delicious meals, but such meals may not be so healthy. For example, each tablespoon of oil used when frying can add more than 100 calories to a meal. When counting calories, men and women should recognize that the way they prepare foods can affect the overall calorie count of a meal.

DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Having second thoughts could be a good thing, even if you’re determined to go through with your plans. You might find it worthwhile to take a fresh look at how things have been set up. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Financial matters could continue to be a problem until you’re able to straighten out some of the more pesky situations. Once that happens, the rest should be easier to unsnarl. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Family matters once again take center stage, and should be dealt with competently and quickly. And, again, insist on others taking on their fair share of the responsibilities. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your creative pursuits seem to be running into a roadblock. But rather than blame outside factors, look within to see if you might be holding back your efforts for some reason. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Keep that keen Cat’s Eye focused on relevant aspects of this new situation in your life. Don’t be distracted by trivial matters. You need the pertinent facts before making a decision. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) As much as you prefer doing things on your own, continue to accept help if you still need to resolve the problem affecting your project. Some cheerful news is about to come your way. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) While you might begrudge the added time it will take to get your project from point A to B to C, etc., you could benefit from the facts that will emerge over this expanded time span. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Regarding your workplace suggestions, be prepared to produce the facts to counter reactions from skeptics who feel your approach is unreasonable or even impossible. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Savvy Sagittarians will look for workrelated answers on their own rather than rely on unproved assumptions. It might take more time to do so, but the payoff is worth it. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your aspects continue to favor family issues, with special emphasis this week on changes in and around your home. Get everyone to suggest what he or she would like to see done. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A matter you thought had been settled might still produce surprises. Best advice: Continue to gather facts to bolster your position just in case you need to produce them quickly. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) While your instincts are usually right when discerning ‘twixt truth and deception, you could benefit from doing more research on the new “prospect” that you’ve been pitched. BORN THIS WEEK: Your wisdom is only matched by your generosity, making you the

RELEASE, REFRESH, RESET (NAPSI)—You don’t have to let a busy schedule break your healthy stride or keep you from crushing your goals. You can regroup on your approach instead. By incorporating these three ways to release, refresh and reset, you can still make health a priority. 1. Release Your Mind by Escaping into Nature. Getting out into nature gives you the space and peace to release the things that bog you down. Escape the rush. Try camping in the wilderness or taking a scenic hike. Studies show that surrounding yourself with nature can have positive effects on mental health. Ditch the office and try working outdoors at a picnic table or on a blanket in the grass. Wherever you go, whatever you do, sit back and breathe in the fresh air. 2. Refresh Your Exercise Routine with New Moves. Inspiration derives from new experiences, which is why exercise physiologist and Bowflex fitness advisor Tom Holland recommends mixing up your daily workout routine. “Give yourself the opportunity to explore and challenge yourself in new ways,” suggests Holland. Try a new workout program, or an exercise machine that moves you in new ways, such as the breakthrough Bowflex LateralX (www.bowflex.com/lateralx) cardio machine. It strengthens and activates muscles with side-to-side, pushand-pull and stand-and-squat motions that target the arms, back, hips and core, as well as common trouble spots including glutes, hamstrings and quads. By moving in all directions, you mimic everyday activities such as yard work, housecleaning or chasing after your kids. It’s a new and exciting workout that can keep you motivated. 3. Reset Your Soul with Time for Yourself. In addition to carving out time for fitness, you need to make time for yourself. Creating positive energy in a chaotic world can be challenging but it’s important for overall health and well-being. You don’t have to be a yogi to meditate. Experts say to start small—try focusing for 10 minutes a day in a quiet place and don’t get frustrated if your mind wanders. It takes practice but the benefits are worth the investment. You may find you’re more calm and productive and you sleep better. Whatever helps you reset, create time in your schedule and act on it. You owe it to yourself. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

No Screening Test for Bile Duct Cancer bile duct cancer. She is a breast cancer survivor and is 75 years old. The tumor is said to be the size of a quarter, and it was discovered after she complained of heartburn symptoms. Are there screening tests that could have detected the condition before the heartburn symptoms? Are there things that she could have done to avoid the cancer? My family members are frightened and want to avoid her condition. -- Anon. ANSWER: Cholangiocarcinoma, cancer of the bile ducts, is a rare cancer that is, unfortunately, associated with a high mortality rate. There are no symptoms in most people until it is advanced. Since the cancer is in the bile ducts, the most common symptoms are caused by obstruction of the bile ducts: jaundice (yellow in skin/ eyes), generalized itching, dark urine and light-colored stools. Abdominal pain, fever and weight loss are other symptoms. Cholangiocarcinoma is not a disease that’s amenable for screening; it is rare in North America (it is more common in East Asia, where there are screening programs). Further, the available screening tests, such as blood tests and imaging studies, are not very sensitive, meaning the tests will miss cases. And they are not very specific -- a positive result on the screening test does not necessarily mean cancer. For these reasons, screening is not currently recommended for people at average risk, although it may be considered in people at high risk, such as people with primary sclerosing cholangitis, a chronic liver disease that puts people at high risk for cholangiocarcinoma. Other risk factors for cholangiocarcinoma are mostly beyond a person’s control: other liver diseases, parasites and genetic conditions. There is some evidence that obesity and diabetes increase the risk of this cancer; however, it does no good for you or your friend to look backward. Never blame the victim. She should concentrate on getting treated. I don’t have enough information to comment on her prognosis, but the fact that it was diagnosed early -- apparently before obstruction of the bile ducts -- and with a tumor only the size of a quarter, are favorable. Treatment may include surgery and chemotherapy (before or after surgery). ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My 22-year-old daughter was diagnosed with overactive bladder at the end of June. She tried medications, but they made her sick. She was given a prescription for a physical therapist to work with her for her condition. Unfortunately, she has hit dead ends. How can she find a physical therapist to work with her? -- A.F. ANSWER: Physical therapists, like most other health care professionals, have individual skill sets. Pelvic-floor physical therapy requires a level of expertise that not all physical therapists have. I suspect she may have just been calling physical therapist offices near her and not finding a therapist with that expertise. A quick internet search found a good number of specially trained therapists in the area where she lives. There are many online reviews of physical therapists, just as there are reviews of doctors and dentists. They have some value, but I would be cautious about both overenthusiastic and overly negative reviews. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Protect Yourself From Social Security Scams (NAPS)—Calls and e-mails from scammers pretending to be government employees are widespread. Social Security phone scams are the #1 scam reported to the Federal Trade Commission. Chances are you, a friend, or a family member have received a call like this. You don’t have to be receiving benefits to become a victim. You may get a call saying there is a problem with your Social Security number or account. Everyone, regardless of age, income, and geography, is at risk. Scammers will try to scare and trick you into giving them your personal information or money. Is It A Scam? The best way to protect yourself and your money is to recognize a scam. Scammers use intimidating language and often offer a “solution” to fix what they say is a serious problem with your Social Security number or account. How can you tell when it’s a scam? Social Security will not: •

Say your Social Security number has been suspended.

• Promise a Social Security benefit approval or increase in exchange for information. •

Call to demand an immediate payment.

• Insist you pay a debt without the ability to appeal the amount you owe. • Require payment by retail gift card, pre-paid debit card, Internet currency, wire transfer, or by mailing cash. •

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 2, 1925, the first nationwide highway numbering system is instituted to minimize confusion. Later, interstate highway numbering would be improved by colored signs and the odd-even demarcation that distinguishes between north-south and east-west travel. On March 3, 1931, President Herbert Hoover signs a congressional act making “The Star-Spangled Banner” the official national anthem of the United States. Francis Scott Key had composed the lyrics as he witnessed the overnight British bombardment of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812. On March 4, 1966, Beatle John Lennon’s controversial quote is printed in the London Evening Standard: “We’re more popular than Jesus.” After a reprint in the U.S., Bible belt radio DJs organized Beatles record burnings and protests, declaring Lennon’s remarks blasphemous. Even the Vatican chimed in. Lennon eventually apologized.

Ask for your personal information.

Scammers prey on your fears. The stories they tell you would scare anyone. No matter how horrible the story, if they do any of the above, it’s a scam. What Should You Do? If you receive a suspicious call, the safest thing for you to do is: 1.

Hang up!

2.

Don’t share personal information or make a payment.

3. Report the scam to the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General at https://oig.ssa.gov. And, if you receive such threats via e-mail, delete the e-mail and do not click on any links or download any attachments. Even if the e-mail or an attachment contains Social Security’s seal or names of real people, ignore it. Then, report the scam. Other Tips How about if Social Security needs to contact you? Generally, they will mail you a letter and only contact you by phone if you have requested a call or have ongoing business with them. Usually, Social Security will mail you a letter that contains telephone numbers for contacting them. You can also contact Social Security by calling 1-800-772-1213 or visiting SSA.gov. Scammers are always looking for the next way to trick someone. No matter how someone might try to scam you, learning the warning signs shared here can go a long way to protecting yourself and someone you care about from identify theft and financial loss. If you think you have been scammed, don’t be embarrassed. Report the scam to Social Security’s Office of the Inspector General at https://oig.ssa.gov and share this important information with your family and friends. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR Make note of potential obstacles. Recognizing potential hurdles in advance of their appearance can help you overcome these obstacles and stay the course toward achieving your goals. For example, men and women hoping to lose weight can look ahead to occasions that might compromise their efforts, such as a loved one’s wedding or backyard barbecue. Recognizing these obstacles in advance gives people a chance to develop a plan to overcome them. In the weight loss example, men and women can choose vegetarian options from reception menus or resolve to avoid alcohol, which tends to be high in calories.

People with multiple hobbies recognize there are many great ways to spend one’s time. But even people with plenty of ways to pass their time may find themselves wasting time each day, a phenomenon that seems to be growing. In its 2014 “Wasting Time at Work” survey, Salary.com found that 89 percent of participants acknowledged wasting time at work each day. That marked a sharp increase from a year prior, when 69 percent of workers surveyed reported wasting time at work. Thirty-one percent of workers surveyed admitted wasting roughly 30 minutes per day, while another 31 percent estimated they waste around one hour each day. Perhaps the most surprising finding from the survey was that 4 percent of participants admitted they waste four or more hours, or at least half a typically eight-hour workday, at work each day. Some people might be wasting time out of sheer boredom, but many may be able to trace all those squandered minutes and hours to inefficiency.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.
