Hello my name is Isa Baby! I am a male vanilla cream ball python with a big attitude! I am one year old, although I can live to about 20! My favorite thing to do is stare at Mom while I’m underneath my log hoping she’ll give me a snack. Sometimes if I’m having a bad day and want to be left alone I’ll hiss, but it’s all drama. I’ve never bitten anyone before. I’m a little bit shy around new people, but I love to give kisses!

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest & become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

St. Agnes Celebrates State Scores & New Tech Lab By Amanda Dudek It was this board-directed foundation that decided to create a technology lab. Mrs. Zhe thanked Mr. Mark Dennis, an SAS parent, whose expertise and hours of research produced a thorough analysis regarding which equipment was best for St. Agnes. Thanks to his efforts, the Foundation concluded that a specified Technology Endowment Fund was needed in order to prepare St. Agnes students for continued success. The Foundation also recognized an immediate need: computers requiring an upgrade. This need has now been met in the form of Chromebook laptops. Large board room scale tables were also replaced with more flexible tables. “A special thanks goes out to more than a dozen donors, especially Mary J. D’Angelo, Peter Koomen, Thomas Shaw, Philip Gelsomino II, Barbara Herman, and Mike & Kate Rizzolo,” says Zhe. Truly, the community and St. Agnes families came together to turn dreams into reality. 4th and 6th grade students demonstrate technologies that they have learned in the new Tech Lab in the library at St. Agnes School.

T

here are few better rewards than recognition for hard work and a job well done. Continuing its tradition of over 140 years of excellence, St. Agnes Catholic School in Avon is enjoying some well-earned recognition after receiving its state test results. Grades are tested in English and Math competency, scored and compared on state and local levels. Teachers and students alike strive to prepare for these exams and eagerly await their outcomes. This year, the results were well worth the wait. It is no secret that Rochester’s diocesan schools have consistently stood out from amongst their peers with assessment results that are better than New York State averages. In 2018, St. Agnes students did exceptionally well. 85% of St. Agnes students were proficient in English Language Arts, and 79% of St. Agnes students were proficient in math, higher than any other Rochester Diocesan Catholic School and standing out amongst its neighbors, as well. To put these numbers in perspective, the New York State averages were 45.2% in English Language Arts and 44.5% in math. “The state assessment is a gift for our teachers.” said Principal Jensen. “The last thing I would want my teachers to have is fear with these state tests. Teachers’ jobs aren’t on the line over scores, so teachers are able to view these tests as guides for their instruction and planning for even greater success in the future. Teachers can see what areas were successful and which were less successful. Also, teachers are able to see where their upcoming students’ strengths and weaknesses are and where they can continue to help them advance as well as where they may need more support.” Principal Jensen shared that St. Agnes students take pride in their scores and put forth their best efforts on their own. Administrators point to the same source of St. Agnes’ success: teachers. “Throughout the last couple of years, our teachers and principals have worked diligently to place our Catholic schools on the path of continuous improvement,” said Superintendent of Rochester’s Diocesan Schools, Anthony Cook. St. Agnes Principal Elizabeth Jensen agrees. “Our teachers really take the time to get to know our students and their individual learning styles. They teach them as a whole person. Once our teachers know the way each student learns, they are better able to teach them the standards in the way they best learn and at their own pace. Our smaller class sizes support this process, as well.” Teachers at St. Agnes teach the whole student, spiritually, emotionally, socially and academically, building strong, positive leaders for the future. This preparation took a big stride forward with the dedication of St. Agnes’ new Technology lab this past January. Mrs. Cindy Zhe gave the dedication speech for the school’s newly upgraded Sr. Monica Memorial Library and Technology Center. Zhe is a board member of the St. Agnes Foundation, a retired SAS preschool teacher, a parent whose 4 children all graduated from SAS, and current librarian at the school. “From the construction of this building in 1905 to the technology upgrades we see here today, in 2019, it has always been people working together to bring the best possible education to the children enrolled at this school,” said Zhe. However, updating technology is no modest expense and was beyond the usual school budget. “The St. Agnes School Foundation works in concert with Ms. Jensen to identify improvements needed for our school that cannot be met within the boundaries of the school budget,” explained Zhe, thanking Mrs. Kim Dougherty, Mrs. Maureen Kingston and Mr. Richard Burke who are also on the Foundation committee.

The community’s involvement did not stop there, however, but continued on to upgrading the Sr. Monica Library, as well. “Last year at this time, the Avon Free Library was undergoing an upgrade too,” said Zhe. “The library’s Board of Trustees gave our school the shelving that was being replaced in the Children’s Room. Thanks to this most generous gift coming from our Avon community, the Sister Monica Memorial Library now has a sleek and finished look, with shelving that matches and is user friendly to all age levels,” said Mrs. Zhe, thanking Ms. Chris Ryan and all associated with the Avon Free Library for their generosity. St. Agnes’ outstanding academic achievements coupled with the generous outpouring of support from St. Agnes’ families and its community demonstrates more strongly than words how valued St. Agnes is. Mrs. Zhe agrees, speaking of these recent contributions as “just a few of the countless ways that our school continues to benefit from community members who value our little Gem on the Circle.” Looking to the future, Mrs. Zhe states, “With the support of Fr. Michael and our Parish Cluster, the St. Agnes School Foundation, our community, and our never tiring families, the focus remains on building our future so that multiple generations ahead can benefit from the solid foundation that was provided for them.” Registration is now open for Preschool and Kindergarten through 6th grade at St. Agnes School. Call (585) 226-8500 for more information. Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? Perhaps an original story, a personal experience, community happening, or school event? Stephen J. Robertson January 31, 2019 LIMA - Died suddenly in a single car accident on January 31, 2019 close to his home at age 59. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Jean Robertson of Lima; beloved children Jaclyn Nicole (Kenneth) Machelski of Lancaster, NY, Jarred Stephen Robertson of NC; adored grandchildren Kendyl Rose, Witney Jo Nicole Machelski; sisters Valerie (Glenn) Westcott of PA, Patricia (Peter) Micciche of CA, Nancy ( John) Donnella of MA; brother Rodrick Robertson of MA; many nieces and nephews; former wife Lisa Duthoy. Steve was predeceased by his parents John and Barbara Robertson. Stevie was a native of Pittsford and a resident of Lima. Big Stevie’s life was an incredible journey that had him follow exciting career paths and undertake many adventures. He worked at Kodak during the golden years then truly blossomed into an Entrepreneur. His roller coaster ride started as a team member at a NASCAR enterprise where he worked trackside in the technology field. He then moved to Lima and started his own company ‘Big Dawg’ Grilling & Catering after a stint as the owner of a motorcycle shop. His award-winning recipes combined with his curbside presence and charm had him become a fixture in the Lima and Rochester community. His business was rapidly growing until his untimely passing. But more than work, Stevie was known by thousands as a “bigger than life” personality always contributing to new endeavors. He was a volunteer fireman, emu farmer, high school football coach and part time school bus driver that all allowed him to stay in touch with the youth of his area. He built race-cars and motorcycles and his huge workshop was always filled with happy laughter from other enthusiasts and his fellow Bills fans. His time as President of the Lima Rotary was very fulfilling for him. He was a titan of a man, gifted with strength and saw many foreign lands. Steve was a Marriage Minister and he preformed 3 weddings for close friends. Calling hours were held Tuesday, February 5, 2019 from 2 – 4, 6 – 8 PM at the Lakeville Training Grounds, 5939 Stone Hill Road, Lakeville. His Funeral Mass was held Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at 10 AM at St. Rose Church, Lima. Private interment Oak Ridge Cemetery, Lima. The courtesy of no flowers is requested. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Lima Rotary Club, c/o Stephen Robertson Scholarship Fund, PO Box 232 Lima, NY 14485. Arrangements by O’Connell-Dougherty Funeral Home, Lima. UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

FILING THE DEATH CERTIFICATE A death certificate, which is a document that declares the deceased’s name, address, date, location, and cause of death, as well as other important information, must be signed by a medical practitioner within a prescribed period of time. While processing this document is routine in a hospital, deaths that occur at home may require calls to the deceased’s personal physician or, if necessary, the county medical examiner or coroner. In the days immediately following death, the funeral director prepares the death certificate, which is filed with the county before the body can be buried or cremated. The funeral home usually files the certificate, certified copies of which will be needed later for insurance, probate, and other purposes. The easiest way to get certified copies of a death certificate is to order them through the funeral home or mortuary at the time of the death. If you are in charge of winding up the deceased person’s affairs, you should ask for at least 10 copies. To learn about our funeral services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. QUOTE: “For death is no more than a turning of us over from time to eternity.” ~ William Penn

CROSSWORD

“To carry a care to bed is to sleep with a pack on your back…”

~ Yidish adage

It is seldom our good fortune to experience cares and problems that can be easily resolved by day’s end. However, it is best to make thoughtful and practical disposition of the cares of the day as quickly as possible. There is nothing more wearing and depressing than to greet the new day with the handicap of yesterday’s problems carried over. Whatever the nature of the problem.... big or small.... make an effort to work it out, solve it and then dismiss it from your mind. Prudent people have found peace of mind by arranging their own funeral services well in advance of need, in as much detail as they desire. This can include the cost and financing alternatives. Let us explain the advantages, without any obligation.

Carnations One of the most popular choices for sympathy arrangements, carnations of various colors have different meanings. A red carnation evokes admiration while a pink carnation stands for remembrance. White carnations stand for pure love and innocence.

to get their mail!!! Then leave them in the road to die!!! Just 1 example of the INSANITY on the roads today!!! Slow Down and L-I-V-E!!! Why does the [local town] Police Dept. publish all the people arrested in their weekly “Police Report”? I am honestly wondering why this is done. Driving today is scary! My opinion on this is BAN SUPER ENERGY DRINKS like they do alcohol!!! Think about it. Every convenience store has them as well as grocery stores etc. So, stop in and get your “Fix” so you can run over people just going out

Not a “vent” - not a “brighter” - just some suggestions. For the New Year: Try some patience, friendly smiles, helpfulness toward others. Please, thank you, excuse me - these all go a long way in dealing with

others. With so many problems in the world, we can all use a little peace & joy! I was recently sideswiped by a white box-type delivery truck. After the truck hit me, it continued down the road without stopping. There is over $5000 damage to my car. There were several witnesses to the accident, but no one stopped to ask if I needed help. I know there are several witnesses that could help to identify the truck. I guess this is where we are today. No one wants to get involved. It’s a sad day for this country. I took the family to the Capital over the holidays. At the Holocaust Museum

there are several exhibits of the concentration camps. While viewing a picture of children wearing prison uniforms, behind a wire fence, skinny and sickly looking, my 8-year-old turned to me and asked: “What did they do to be put in there?” The children in this camp were about my child’s age. I didn’t want him to fear that this could ever happen to him. I told him they didn’t do anything wrong. There were a lot of problems in the country and the leader didn’t want to be blamed, so he blamed outsiders: the Jews. He put them in the camps and let them die. Then my child asked: ”How could the good people let this happen?”

Brighter Side Congratulations to all the hardworking volunteers at the Henrietta Library Book Shop, the Shop is opening again and we can’t wait to see you all, we missed you. A special thanks to Adrienne and Brigid for making the reopening happen! I would like to tip my hat to outgoing Clarkson Town Supervisor Jerry Underwood. Jerry served his post with class, dignity and honor. Have you heard of any other Town Supervisors who would give up their first-year salary to keep their public library going? Or attend to a citizen’s concerns about road

repair and snow plowing? Or investigate energy sources that would be cheaper and cleaner for the Town? I wish Jerry all the best and that he will consider a future position in public service again. Many thanks to Rick Falker, Service Advisor at Bob Johnson Chevrolet, who provided such prompt and courteous service on my 2016 Malibu on January 10th. The Joseph Gallipeau Avon American Legion Post #294 would like tothank Avondale Pub, Town

of Avon and Avon Tops Friendly Markets for their continued support. Many thanks to Mike for helping us all out in the winter. He helps all of us during the storms, without pay, always with a smile. We don’t ask him, he just shows up!! Some of us older senior citizens really appreciate it. THANKS MIKE!! Scottsville and Wheatland and God Bless You, Your the job you people did this LeRoy neighborhood weekend was outstanding and enabled me to get my papers to I want to give a special my customers. I have lived and shout out to the Wheatland Highway Dept. for their great delivered papers here for years job keeping our roads clear and and your efforts are greatly passable during this latest storm. appreciated!! Thank you and I deliver newspapers throughout keep up the great work!!

Inflammation can affect anyone, and those who have battled it likely have nothing positive to say. But while few people may associate inflammation with something good, inflammation is actually a process by which the body’s white blood cells and the substances those cells produce protect the body from infection at the hands of bacteria, viruses and other foreign organisms. While inflammation is protective by nature, sometimes an inflammatory response is triggered by mistake. When that happens, the body’s immune system, which is designed to protect the body, begins to damage its own tissues. The resulting symptoms of this faulty immune system response may include joint pain, joint stiffness, loss of function in the joints, and swelling of the joints. None of those symptoms are comfortable, and people suffering from them may be on the lookout for ways to alleviate their pain and suffering. While anyone battling persistent inflammation should speak with their physicians to explore their treatment options, a preliminary search of how to best treat inflammation will no doubt turn up information about heat therapy and cold therapy.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently read an article on the pros and cons of a daily aspirin for protection against both heart disease and colon cancer. This is not a new topic, I realize, and I know that the benefits of daily aspirin apply only to certain segments of the population. Here’s my question: If a person doesn’t experience any stomach or bleeding issues, does a much higher dose of aspirin daily also convey the same possibly protective effects? I don’t believe that more is better, but I already take an average of nine 325 mg generic aspirin tablets daily for leg pain. I’m in that 50-59 age group, and there is heart disease on both sides of my family, so I’m hoping this dose confers some cardiac benefit. I would love to find a cure for the deep ache I get in my legs -usually just the right calf. I’ve had these since I was a child, and I’ve reconciled myself to the fact that I will have them for the rest of my life, but the aspirin I take has never caused me stomach pain or excessive bleeding, and it works for the pain. -- T.P. ANSWER: The studies showing that taking aspirin protects the heart mostly have been done using 81 mg daily or 325 mg every other day. However, the mechanism of the action, preventing platelets from forming a clot, is even stronger at higher doses, so it would make sense that higher doses would be at least as effective. However, they are much more likely to cause bleeding, even if most people can take higher doses without problems. So it’s recommended you take the minimum effective dose to get the benefit with the least harm. In your case, however, I think you are likely getting all the benefit there may be. I say “may be” because recent studies have failed to replicate the protection seen in earlier studies. I still believe that aspirin is useful in people at higher-than-average risk for heart disease. More and more evidence is coming out that the same low dose of aspirin helps protect against several forms of cancer, especially of the colon. However, I don’t yet recommend it just to protect against cancer, but I will continue to pay careful attention to ongoing studies on aspirin and will revisit this topic when more research becomes available. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: In a recent test, my blood vitamin D level was good, at 43, but my calcitriol level was low at 16. I do have hyperglycemia, but how do I increase my calcitriol level? I take no medications. -- J.I. ANSWER: If you don’t have kidney or parathyroid hormone problems, then calcitriol isn’t the right blood test to determine your bone health relative to vitamin D. Calcitriol is an activated form of vitamin D, and it best reflects calcium intake. I suspect low calcium intake when I see a high calcitriol. Since calcitriol removes calcium from the bones, it may worsen osteoporosis. If you haven’t had your kidneys and parathyroid hormone level (which also affects calcium movement in the kidney and bones) checked recently, then do so. If those are OK, then be sure to get enough calcium, especially from dietary sources like leafy green vegetables. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Your

New Brain Health Initiative Could Unlock Mysteries Of Alzheimer’s, Dementia (NAPS)—Scientists are contemplating important questions about health, mind and age: Could your blood hold the molecular secrets to a fountain of youth, preventing agerelated brain disorders? Are brain aging and Alzheimer’s disease caused by a failure of interconnected systems, triggering a dominolike cascade of disease? Can targeting the red blood cells and blood vessels jointly keep your brain healthy and prevent dementia? The Problem As people live longer, Alzheimer’s and other age-related dementias are on the rise, projected to reach more than 75 million people worldwide by 2030. To date, no effective therapy has been developed for these disorders, which are not only deadly but exact a high financial and emotional toll on society. The Research To find solutions, three large-scale research teams are exploring those questions as part of an initiative to merge research of the brain and the blood vessels to develop new understanding of—and, ultimately, better preventions and treatments for—age-related brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease. The Scientists To help, American Heart Association, the world’s leading voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health, and The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group, a division of the Allen Institute, launched the $43 million research project to bridge the science of vascular and brain health through revolutionary, out-of-the-box thinking. Additional supporters include the Oskar Fischer Project and the Henrietta B. and Frederick H. Bugher Foundation. The three teams, headquartered at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, Calif.; Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, Calif.; and University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in Cleveland, OH, respectively, work to develop new solutions to the urgent problem of age-related cognitive decline. The researchers are: • “Rusty” Gage, Ph.D., a neuroscience researcher and president of Salk, who will lead an eight-year project looking into new targets for therapeutic research and biomarkers of early-stage cognitive decline. • Tony Wyss-Coray, Ph.D., a professor of neurology at Stanford, who will lead a four-year project studying how changes in the immune system affect cognitive health. • Mukesh K. Jain, M.D., a cardiologist at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, who will lead a team of investigators on a four-year project investigating whether targeting red blood cells and blood vessels can prevent dementia. The Hope The research could yield transformational discoveries to better detect, treat and prevent cognitive decline. Scientists are seeking answers to important questions about how to preserve your mind over time.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Some unsettling facts about a past situation could come to light. And while you’d love to deal with it immediately, it’s best to get more information to support your case. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) A straightforward approach to a baffling situation is best. Don’t allow yourself to be drawn into an already messy mass of tangles and lies. Deal with it and move on. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Don’t be discouraged or deterred by a colleague’s negative opinion about your ideas. It could actually prove to be helpful when you get around to finalizing your plan. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Ignore that sudden attack of “modesty,” and step up to claim the credit you’ve so rightly earned. Remember: A lot of people are proud of you and want to share in your achievement. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) A financial “deal” that seems to be just right for you Leos and Leonas could be grounded more in gossamer than substance. Get an expert’s advice to help you check it out. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Don’t ignore that suddenly cool or even rude attitude from someone close to you. Asking for an explanation could reveal a misunderstanding you were completely unaware of. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Unless you have sound knowledge, and not just an opinion, it’s best not to step into a family dispute involving a legal matter, regardless of whom you support. Leave that to the lawyers. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An awkward situation presents the usually socially savvy Scorpian with a problem. But a courteous and considerate approach soon helps clear the air and ease communication. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A calmer, less-tense atmosphere prevails through much of the week, allowing you to restore your energy levels before tackling a new challenge coming up by week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your approach to helping with a friend or family member’s problem could boomerang unless you take time to explain your method and how and why it (usually!) works. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Someone who gave you a lot of grief might ask for a chance for the two of you to make a fresh start. You need to weigh the sincerity of the request carefully before giving your answer. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Too much fantasizing about an upcoming decision could affect your judgment. Better to make your choices based on what you know now rather than on what you might learn later. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of seeing the best in people and helping them live up to their potential. (c) 2019 King Features Syndicate

(NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.”

TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE

Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it.

“People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful.

For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes.

Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools.
