LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

St. Patrick’s Day Tradition! What started as a way to get to the bottom of Chicago’s pollution problem, the pouring of a special green dye into the river allowed authorities to see exactly where waste dumping was occurring. This prompted the idea to make it an annual event, turning the river green for St. Patrick’s Day. That dye is now an eco-friendly vegetablebased dye. You have to be quick to view because it lasts just 5 hours!

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4 • • • • • • • • • • 1.

8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf 2 cups half-and-half 4 egg yolks 3 tablespoons light brown sugar 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 1/2 cup sour cream 1 tablespoon granulated sugar 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2) Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F. 2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter. 3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed. 4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla. 5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream. Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

Thought they might be most often associated with dogs, ticks can affect cats as well. According to Blue Cross for Pets, cats are most likely to encounter ticks if they live near areas with lots of deer and sheep or in regions where other wildlife, such as hedgehogs and rabbits, are present. While ticks are active throughout the year, cats are most likely to encounter them between spring and autumn. That’s due in part to the climate during these seasons, which tends to be warmer and therefore more inviting to cats, compelling them to spend more time outdoors than they do in winter. Ticks, which are egg-shaped, are big enough to spot, so cat owners should conduct a careful examination of their cats’ fur each time they come into the house after spending time in the yard. Blue Cross for Pets notes that ticks feel like small bumps on a cat’s skin. Ticks are most likely to attach themselves to particular areas of a cat’s body. These areas include the head, neck, ears, and feet. Routine brushing, especially whenever cats come inside after time spent outdoors, can help cat owners spot and remove ticks from their cats. It’s important to recognize that indoor cats are not invulnerable to ticks, as other pets and humans can track ticks indoors. Periodic inspections and brushing of indoor cats’ can protect them from ticks and the diseases ticks carry.

Livonia Wrestler Landon Feil and Teammate Move on to State By Amanda Dudek

W

hen nine-year-old Landon Feil took 3rd place in the Western Regionals Qualifier for the New York State Championships on Sunday, March 1st, he was following in his father’s footsteps. Matthew Feil, Landon’s father and wrestling coach had also wrestled in high school and couldn’t be more proud of his son. In two weeks, he will head up to SUNY Brockport to compete at the state level. Landon started wrestling with the Livonia Youth Wrestling Program at the age of five, taking to the sport immediately. In fact, this year will be his fourth year in a row competing in the New York State Championships; he also competed at the ages of 6, 7 and 8. In 2018, he placed 4th in all of New York State. “He absolutely loves it, and he works very hard,” said dad, Matt Feil. “We practice three to four nights a week with tournaments every weekend from December 1st through the middle of March.” Landon finished the Regional Qualifier with a record of 4-1 in a bracket of ten, and his record for the year is a very respectable 31-15. Brackets are divided by age and weight, and Landon, age 9, is in the 66-pound bracket. “They only wrestle kids their same age and weight brackets,” explained Feil. “This keeps it fair across the board.”

Livonia Bulldog Youth Wrestling competitor, Myles Jarzyna (far right), took 4th place at the Western Regionals in his bracket with a record of 2-2!

“Our club is Livonia Bulldog Youth Wrestling, and we are town affiliated although we practice at the school,” shared Feil. “This year, we hosted our first annual youth tournament which turned out great.” Feil explained that this tournament also functioned as a fundraiser to help the children get shorts, t-shirts, singlets and other gear in the future. “We are self-funded, so that helped a lot.” Landon plans to continue in youth wrestling through the age of 12 at which point he could move on to modified or varsity, which Matthew Feil believes he will jump into given his success so far. “He is a captain on our team now, and I’m sure he will carry that title at the varsity level,” said Feil. Landon also has a younger brother, Owen, who is 6 years old and has been on the team for 2 years now and who has shown great promise. Later on in March, Landon will be joined at States by his teammate, 11-year-old Myles Jarzyna, who placed 4th in his bracket with a record of 2-2 at the Regional tournament.

Livonia Bulldog Youth Wrestling Captain, Landon Feil (2nd from right), took 3rd place at the Western Regionals in his bracket with a record of 4-1!

Described by Matthew Feil as “a wrestler with the heart of a lion,” Myles began wrestling only two years ago and already has earned himself his first visit to the State Championships. The New York State Championships are a one to two-day event with brackets. These are double elimination brackets, and children come from all over New York State, from as far away as Long Island and Pulaski to the Pennsylvania and Vermont borders. “The top four in each age and weight bracket in each region are invited to participate,” shared Feil. “We fill up the SERC building in Brockport with about 5,000 people in the stands. It is a full day of wrestling and an exciting event.” Matthew Feil highly recommends wrestling for interested youth. “It does require a lot of time and travel, but creates a good foundation for kids growing up,” he said. “It teaches them things like facing adversity, leadership skills, discipline and hard work. It is great for physical fitness and encourages children to realize that they get out of it what they put into it.” Enjoy this article? STAY SAFE WHEN LANDSCAPING Landscaping is typically viewed as a chore by homeowners, many of who enjoy doing some work on their lawns and gardens. But only few homeowners may recognize the potential dangers of lawn maintenance. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that more than 230,000 people per year are treated for various injuries resulting from lawn and garden tools. Common injuries include loss of fingers, lacerations, broken and dislocated bones, eye injuries, and burns. Many of these injuries are entirely preventable if homeowners prioritize safety when tending to their lawns and gardens.

REMODELING HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION

Russ Piraino

“Service & Quality Is First Priority”

TRY THIS TREAT (NAPSI)—Here’s an exotic twist that transforms everyday cheesecake into something sophisticated, elegant and worthy of your holiday table. Pureed sweet potatoes, five spice powder and candied ginger star in a dessert that’s easy to make and can be enjoyed yearround. The sweet potatoes not only provide luscious texture and flavor, they prevent the cake from cracking—so it’s deliciously decadent and practically foolproof. Give it a try.

Rebate and recycling programs can help reduce the initial cost of purchasing new appliances. The government may offer tax incentives to those people who purchase a new, energy-efficient models.

Maintain appliances and replace older ones. While reducing reliance on energy-thirsty appliances is a great way to reduce energy consumption, no one needs to throw away their refrigerators. Instead, maintain appliances so they are not forced to work harder, and thereby consume more energy, to function. Routinely clean the filters on window air conditioners, replacing them if they’re worn down. In addition, have HVAC units serviced annually to ensure they’re operating at peak capacity. Replace older appliances, including refrigerators, that are no longer effective.

Sweet Potato Cheesecake with Gingered Whipped Cream Serves 10 to 12 8 oz gingersnap cookies 4 tbsp butter, melted, plus more for pan 3 8-oz packages cream cheese 1 ¼ c sugar 2 tsp ground ginger ½ tsp Chinese five-spice or pumpkin pie spice blend ¾ tsp salt 3 large eggs 3 c orange-fleshed sweetpotato puree ½ c sour cream 1 tsp vanilla extract 2 c whipped cream ¼ c chopped candied ginger Preheat oven to 350° F. Butter bottom and sides of 9-in springform pan. In food processor, pulse cookies until finely ground. Add butter and pulse until blended. Transfer to prepared pan and press into bottom. Bake 10 minutes. Set aside to cool. Use an electric mixer to combine cream cheese, sugar, ground ginger, spice blend and salt, beating until smooth. Beat in eggs. Add sweet potato puree, sour cream and vanilla, beating just until smooth. Pour mixture into cooled crust. Place springform pan inside larger pan and pour very hot tap water into larger pan, to reach 1 inch up springform pan. Bake until edges are set and center is slightly wobbly, 45 to 50 minutes. Remove springform pan from larger pan and cool to room temperature. Cover and refrigerate until thoroughly chilled. Fold candied ginger into whipped cream. WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER

OTHER

One of the easiest ways to reduce the risk of falls is to improve lighting around the home. The National Institutes of Health state that adequate lighting is important at entrances to the home, stairways, hallways, and other frequently traversed areas. Make sure lighting fixtures are using the highest wattage light bulb allowed. Artificial lighting sources become even more vital in fall and autumn, when natural light is less abundant in a home. In addition, install lighting outdoors by the front door, over the garage and where garbage pails are stored to facilitate safe passage. SPORTS QUIZ By Ryan A. Berenz

Refresh Your Home for Spring Get rid of grime A whole season’s worth of dirt and dust accumulates during the cold winter months. A deep clean inside and out can restore your home to its former glory. Inside, take time to launder all of your linens, including curtains, rugs and bedding. Move furniture to vacuum behind and below, and don’t overlook dust and dirt magnets like mirrors, light fixtures and the insides of cabinets, especially higher shelves that see infrequent use. Outdoors, hose off or power-wash surfaces like windows, siding, decks and concrete to restore a crisp, clean appearance.

585-944-3939 FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 8, 1986, "Mask," starring Eric Stoltz and Cher, opens. Cher, who had launched a serious acting career with her appearance in Robert Altman's "Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean" in 1982, received the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in "Mask." On March 17, 1834, Gottlieb Daimleris is born in Germany. In 1885, he and Wilhelm Maybach developed a new version of the four-stroke internal-combustion engine, which they attached to a wooden bicycle, creating the world’s first motorcycle. On March 16, 1903, Roy Bean, the self-proclaimed “law west of the Pecos,” dies in Langtry, Texas. Bean’s claim to fame rested on his often humorous and sometimes-bizarre rulings as a justice of the peace in western Texas during the late 19th century.

How To Avoid Growing Bored In Retirement • Embrace a new hobby. Whether it’s perfecting your golf game, writing that novel, learning to cook like a gourmet chef or whatever else you might have always wanted to do, retirement is a great time to do it. • Volunteer. If a part-time job is not up your alley, then consider volunteering in your community. Volunteers are always in demand, and volunteering with a local charity can provide a sense of purpose and provide opportunities to meet likeminded fellow retirees, all while helping to quell your boredom.

Washing your hands is easy, and it’s one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of germs. Clean hands can stop germs from spreading from one person to another and throughout an entire community—from your home and workplace to childcare facilities and hospitals.

THE PEN

Follow these five steps every time. • Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap. • Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails. • Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice. • Rinse your hands well under clean, running water. • Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them. Why? Read the science behind the recommendations.

Use Hand Sanitizer When You Can’t Use Soap and Water You can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs in most situations. If soap and water are not readily available, you can use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

HOMETOWN 1. Homemade hummus with truly unique taste Hummus provides a delicious and healthy alternative to less nutritional dips. Versatile and available in various flavors, hummus can be whipped up at home for those who prefer to make their own dips. The following recipe for “Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread” from James Campbell Caruso’s “España: Explore the Flavors of Spain” (Gibbs Smith) includes some Moroccan flavors that give this easy-toprepare recipe a truly unique taste.

Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread

2.

Makes 2 cups 2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped Salt 1 cup cooked garbanzo beans, drained 4 teaspoons chopped cilantro plus 1 teaspoon for garnish 2 tablespoons chopped red onion 21/2 teaspoons ground cumin 11/2 teaspoons ground coriander seeds 2 tablespoons lemon juice 4 teaspoons olive oil 2 teaspoons chile flakes 2 teaspoons Moroccan Spice Blend (see below) Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 batch Yogurt Flatbread (see below) In a medium saucepan, combine the carrots with 2 quarts water and 2 teaspoons salt. Season to taste with salt and pepper and garnish with the remaining cilantro. Serve with fresh, hot Yogurt Flatbread cut in wedges.

Preheat a gas or charcoal grill to medium. Scrape the dough from the work bowl and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a long log and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and use a rolling pin or tortilla press to flatten it into a 1/4-inch-thick tortilla shape. Brush each “tortilla” lightly with olive oil. Grill each for about 40 seconds then turn and cook another 40 seconds.

DID YOU KNOW? Modern technology has forever transformed the classroom. As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and such advancements continue to change how students learn. One way schools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.

CELEBRATE ENERGY STAR DAY - EVERY DAY (NAPSI)—Every Fall, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) celebrates ENERGY STAR Day to raise awareness about the benefits of saving energy today, tomorrow, and for good. The typical household spends about $2,000 a year on energy bills. American consumers interested in saving money on their utility bills can look for the blue ENERGY STAR label to identify products—in categories such as electronics, appliances, smart thermostats, and lighting-that have been independently certified to use less energy. According to the EPA, outfitting your home with these products could save you 30 percent—or about $575—on your household energy bills, while avoiding more than 5,500 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. Utilities, product manufacturers, and retailers around the country join the celebration and offer special deals that help make energy efficiency accessible and affordable for everyone. In some communities, manufacturers of ENERGY STAR certified light bulbs work with electric utilities to provide low-cost LED bulbs at major discount and DIY retailers. For more information visit www.energystar.gov/SaveForGood. Since 1992, ENERGY STAR and its partners have helped American families and businesses save nearly 4 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity and achieve over 3 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas reductions. TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons. Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said. Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively. Learn More: For more information, go to www.vendini.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

UNDERSTANDING DEMENTIA Dementia presents itself through various symptoms, and memory loss alone is not enough to lead to a dementia diagnosis. Dementia can affect thinking and social abilities, but the Mayo Clinic notes that some dementias may be reversible. The following are some common symptoms of dementia: • Trouble communicating or finding words. • Difficulty completing complex tasks. • Challenges with planning and organization. • Episodes of confusion and disorientation. • Memory loss, which is often noticed by a third party. • Personality changes that can include agitation, anxiety, inappropriate behavior and even hallucinations. Apart from Alzheimer’s disease, which is a progressive disorder most common in people age 65 and older, there are other types of dementia. The second most common is called “vascular dementia.” This results from damage to vessels that supply blood to the brain. This damage can be the result of stroke, smoking and other blood vessel conditions. Brain imaging can often detect blood vessel problems implicated in vascular dementia. Dementia with Lewy bodies, or DLB, is another dementia that laymen may mistake for Alzheimer’s disease. The Alzheimer’s Association notes that people with DLB often have not only memory loss and cognitive problems common in Alzheimer’s, but they also display initial or early symptoms such as sleep disturbances, well-formed visual hallucinations, slowness, gait imbalance or other Parkinsonian movement features, which can lead to misdiagnosis. Announcing... TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

New Option to Treat Enlarged Prostate

Jeffrey A. Goldstein, M.D., F.A.C.G.

Office Open in Batavia Now seeing patients & doing procedures at:

---

190 Washington Ave., Batavia, NY

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 66-year old male who is healthy with a very active life, both physical and sexual. Like many men my age, I have an enlarged prostate that my doctor monitors during annual visits. It doesn’t impair my life, with the small exception of being annoying (waking up nightly to a weak or slow urinating stream), and it doesn’t bother me too much during the day, except once in a while when I have to urinate a little more than usual. Every now and then I’ll try an over-the-counter prostate supplement, but they never work. I will NOT go for a surgery because it’s not really necessary. I just read about a new revolutionary treatment option called a prostatic lift device, which is supposed to “lift and remove the prostate tissue out of the way so it no longer blocks the urethra (the passageway that the urine flows through).” It says, “Tiny implants are placed to hold the tissue in place, like tiebacks on a window curtain, leaving an unobstructed pathway for urine to flow normally again.” They go on to say that treatment typically takes under an hour, preserves sexual function, doesn’t require cutting, heating or removal of tissue. Compared with other BPH surgeries, this system is supposed to have a strong safety profile with minimal side effects. Have you ever heard of this? Do you think it’s safe? It sounds great. However, the thought of tiny implants being placed inside of me and staying there scares me. -- V.A. ANSWER: The prostatic urethral lift procedure is yet another option for men with symptoms of an enlarged prostate. The procedure does involve the placement of small implants. The procedure is said to be easy to perform (easy for a urologist, that is), and improves quality of life and measures of urinary flow. In a study of 206 men, none developed sexual troubles after the procedure. It has significant benefits over traditional surgery: Recovery is faster and has less risk of sexual side effects, but traditional surgery improved urinary flow and complete bladder drainage more than the urethral lift procedure. Also, 14% of men who had the lift procedure needed the traditional surgery within five years. The implants seem to be safe and do not affect the ability to do surgery if necessary. I wouldn’t recommend this procedure nor a surgical procedure -- or even an alternative procedure like laser, microwave, plasma vaporization or water vapor ablation -- without a trial of prescription medication first. Most men do very well with an alpha blocker like tamsulosin (Flomax), a dihydrotestosterone blocker like dutasteride (Avodart), or a combination of the two. I’m not sure you have tried that.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Simple question: Why can’t I hear well when I am having a big yawn? Is this normal? -- J.C.A. ANSWER: This is normal; in fact, it’s a universal finding with a yawn that hearing decreases (but doesn’t go away entirely). This is because the Eustachian tube closes, and there is a pressure difference inside versus the outside of the eardrum, reducing the ability of the ear to transmit sound. Interestingly, after a big yawn, hearing may be improved; when the Eustachian tube reopens after the jaw position changes, it can equalize the pressure and improve sound transmission. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HOW TO OVERCOME WORKOUT FATIGUE Give the body time to recover. Whether it’s more time between sets of repetitions or an extra day off between workouts, a fatigued body might just need more time to rest and recover. Aging men and women must recognize that they might not be capable of pushing themselves as hard as they once did and should adjust their workouts accordingly.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Disappointed about something that didn’t go your way? Cheer up. Look at the reasons it happened, and you could find a valuable lesson about what to do (or not do!) the next time. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s a good time to do some reassessing of plans and goals -even how you considered redoing your bathroom. The point is to be open to change if change can improve things. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Take some time to learn who is the right person (or persons) to approach and discuss your ideas with for your new project. Also, reserve time to prepare for an upcoming family event. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Dealing with a demanding situation, as you recently did, could drain much of your own emotional reserves. Take time to relax and indulge yourself in some well-earned pampering. LEO (July 23 to August 22) The regal Lion might feel that she or he is above emotional displays. But showing your feelings can be both liberating for you and reassuring for someone who has been waiting for you to do so. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An emotionally needy person might make more demands than you can cope with. Best to ask for some breathing space NOW, before resentment sets in and makes communication difficult. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) An unexpected spate of mixed signals could cause serious schedule setbacks. Best to focus on straightening everything out as soon as possible and get everyone back on track. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be aware that someone in the workplace could try to use a disagreement with a colleague against you. If so, be prepared to offer your side of the story with the facts to back you up. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) An unexpected challenge to a previous decision can be unsettling. But your reservoir of self-confidence -- plus your loyal supporters -- should help carry the day for you. Good luck. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) While the idea of making some sort of major move in the near future continues to interest you, don’t overlook a new possibility that could be emerging closer to home. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Be careful not to base an upcoming decision on gossip or anything you might hear if it can’t meet provable standards. That’s true regardless of whom the source might be. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might still need to do some solid reassessing early in the week before you can close that sensitive situation. A new job-related opportunity could present itself later in the week. BORN THIS WEEK: You are extraordinarily sensitive to people’s feelings, and you’re always ready to offer comfort if necessary. SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS How else can drivers improve visibility? In addition to replacing headlight bulbs in pairs every two to three years, drivers can take the following proactive measures to reduce the likelihood that their vision will be compromised while on the road. • Replace worn out wiper blades. Wiper blades need to be changed each season or in three-month intervals. Rubber wiper blades can grow brittle rather quickly, potentially compromising driver visibility at times when they need their vision to be as strong as possible, such as when rain or snow is falling. • Clean interior glass and mirrors. Over time, interior glass can develop a film-like buildup that reduces vision and creates hazy reflections from the sun. Smokers may notice such buildup is especially thick in their vehicles. Periodically clean interior glass and mirrors to prevent this film from compromising your vision. • Don’t hang accessories in your vehicle. Fuzzy dice, photos and other items hung on rearview mirrors can prove distracting and block you from seeing the road.

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS (NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth. TIPS FOR A STRESS-FREE COM M UTE Put the cell phone dow n. Your car is not a mobile office. Cell phones are distracting. Designate your time in the car as “ quiet time.” If you must talk on the phone, get a headset -- as now required by many state law s -- so that both your hands remain on the steering w heel.

Don’t overlook looks. Looks can be deceiving, but new car buyers w ho eventually plan to sell their vehicles should do all they can to keep the car looking as new as it did the day it w as first driven off the dealership lot. M uch like homeow ners benefit w hen selling a home w ith curb appeal, a car that looks good gives buyers the impression that it w as w ell taken care of. But a dirty car or one w ith lots of dings and dents is a red flag to preow ned car buyers.

FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU ON THE ROAD TO YOUR NEW HOME (NAPSI)—Whenever you rent a truck to move yourself from one home to another, keeping these five facts in mind can help you and your furniture all arrive in good order and good time. 1. Let time be on your side. When planning your trip, take into account the time of day you intend to travel and likely traffic patterns. Always leave lots of extra time and be aware of possible bottlenecks along the way. 2. Read the agreement. Most truck rental agreements say something like the language from the U.S. Department of Transportation that prohibits the “carrying or hauling of explosives and other dangerous articles.” That means you can’t pack paint, chemicals and cleaning materials, flammable solvents, propane, gasoline and the like. Check with your rental agent if you’re not sure about a particular item. 3. Don’t be blindsided. Trucks have big blind spots, what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration calls the “No-Zone.” You should know where these areas are, especially when changing lanes or coming to a stop. 4. Know what you’re driving. Make sure you can find and understand the use of all the truck’s switches and gauges. Adjust the seat and side mirrors so they match your height and comfort zone. Also, remember, trucks are taller, wider and may weigh up to 10 times more than the average car, explain the experts on truck rental at Penske, so you have to be extra vigilant. 5. Be sure to insure. Most insurance and credit card companies won’t cover truck rentals under existing policies. If your insurance company is among them, consider signing up for additional coverage options to protect yourself and your belongings. You may feel more confident knowing there is a company that offers free 24/7 emergency roadside assistance. Learn More: For further moving facts and tips, go to www. PenskeTruckRental.com or call (800) GO-PENSKE. REAL ESTATE

RELEASE, REFRESH, RESET (NAPSI)—You don’t have to let a busy schedule break your healthy stride or keep you from crushing your goals. You can regroup on your approach instead. By incorporating these three ways to release, refresh and reset, you can still make health a priority. 1. Release Your Mind by Escaping into Nature. Getting out into nature gives you the space and peace to release the things that bog you down. Escape the rush. Try camping in the wilderness or taking a scenic hike. Studies show that surrounding yourself with nature can have positive effects on mental health. Ditch the office and try working outdoors at a picnic table or on a blanket in the grass. Wherever you go, whatever you do, sit back and breathe in the fresh air.

Richard E. Thurber March 8, 2020 Conesus: March 8, 2020 at age 96. Dick was born on February 5, 1924 in Bradford, PA to the late Frederick and Lena Thurber. Dick was a resident of Conesus, NY for many years, was a retiree of R.C. Shaheen Paint Co., Rochester, NY and proudly served in the US Army Air Force during WWII. A graveside service will be held at 11:30am on Saturday, March 14th, at Maple Lawn Cemetery, Rte 417 West, Bolivar, NY, with military honors. As Dick was a lifetime member of the Springwater American Legion Post, 7998 School Street, Springwater, NY 14560, memorial contributions may be directed there in his memory. 2. Refresh Your Exercise Routine with New Moves. Inspiration derives from new experiences, which is why exercise physiologist and Bowflex fitness advisor Tom Holland recommends mixing up your daily workout routine. “Give yourself the opportunity to explore and challenge yourself in new ways,” suggests Holland. Try a new workout program, or an exercise machine that moves you in new ways, such as the breakthrough Bowflex LateralX (www.bowflex.com/lateralx) cardio machine. It strengthens and activates muscles with side-to-side, pushand-pull and stand-and-squat motions that target the arms, back, hips and core, as well as common trouble spots including glutes, hamstrings and quads. By moving in all directions, you mimic everyday activities such as yard work, housecleaning or chasing after your kids. It’s a new and exciting workout that can keep you motivated. 3. Reset Your Soul with Time for Yourself. In addition to carving out time for fitness, you need to make time for yourself. Creating positive energy in a chaotic world can be challenging but it’s important for overall health and well-being. You don’t have to be a yogi to meditate. Experts say to start small—try focusing for 10 minutes a day in a quiet place and don’t get frustrated if your mind wanders. It takes practice but the benefits are worth the investment. You may find you’re more calm and productive and you sleep better. Whatever helps you reset, create time in your schedule and act on it. You owe it to yourself.

John A. Rhode Sr. “Jack” February 29, 2020 John “Jack” A. Rhode Sr., of Titusville, FL and East Avon and Conesus Lake, NY, passed away on February 29, 2020, at the age of 91. Jack was born in Rush, NY, on November 28, 1928, to the late William George Rhode and Adeline Lillian Cooligan. Jack served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He later worked as a heavy equipment operator in the underground utility field as a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers in the Local 832 for 41 years. Jack also held his commercial pilot license and enjoyed owning and flying his own airplanes. Jack loved flying so much that he bought property and developed his own private landing strip behind his house in South Lima, NY. This landing strip is identified on a 1968 New York State map as the “Rhode Airport.” It was not unusual to find Jack flying for pleasure, bird chasing, or flying the jump plane for parachutists. He even decided to fly his plane to work one day in Henrietta, NY, causing a ruckus in the surrounding neighborhood. That stunt earned him few paragraphs in the local newspaper! Jack spent the last couple of years at Addington Place, an assisted living facility in Titusville, Florida. Many thanks go out to the employees who cooked him delicious meals, entertained him, and ensured his needs were met 24/7. Jack enjoyed visiting with the residents at Addington Place and was known as the “thumbs up” guy when they all greeted him with “Hi, Jack!” Even in his 90’s, Jack was always willing to lend a hand and could frequently be heard saying, “Thank you and if you need anything, let me know because I am here.” These were the last words he said to his family and the aides who were taking care of him. Jack is predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Ruth E. (Beil) Rhode. He is survived by his daughters, Sharon (Dick) Mistretta of Livonia, NY, and Linda A. Rhode of Van Alstyne, TX; his son, John “Cubby” A. Rhode Jr. and his wife, Linda A. Kelly Rhode. In Jack’s memory, take the time to help someone out and make time for family and friends. A memorial service will be held in the summer of 2020 in NY. Interment will be held privately. Contributions may be sent to Addington Place, 497 N. Washington Ave., Titusville, FL 32796. Tributes can be typed on this link: https://www.northbrevardfuneralhome.com/tributes/John-Rhode

to do. A wonderful young boy, middle school age, behind me said he would pay for the card. At that time, he didn’t know that I would reimburse him with a check. He was awesome. After he left, a man behind me said, “See? There are good people in this world.” Thank you again, Cole! Some friends and I enjoyed a wonderful tea on Valentine’s Day at the Country Mouse Tea House in Mt. Morris. Everything was so good; we’ll be back! Thanks again.

of waiting in line for the automatic knowing how long the lines would probably be, I opted to do a quick manual wash. I pulled around into line; all three bays had a person but no one in line waiting. I hung back to go into next available spot. I realized the person ahead of me was taking longer because he was teaching his daughter how to wash and use the wand. I finally got to pull in, and right before he left, he deposited more quarters! How generous and thoughtful! I didn’t mind waiting, but that made my day!

Wanting to wash my car of the salt, I headed to the local car wash. Instead

Another winter living across the street from two abandoned houses. Don’t buy houses if you can’t afford them. Now, they are owned by banks that are in no hurry to repair them and get them back on the tax rolls. These are the same banks I’m sure that gave them the loans in the first place. We live in a nice neighborhood where people work hard to keep up their properties. We don’t deserve to be exposed to this mess.

calm in an accident. Nobody was hurt. I drove my car home. If this is how he’s going to act in this situation, think of how he’ll react when he hits a deer and totals his car! They don’t follow the rules. He has a lot to learn about driving if he lives to see his 60’s. His passenger never said a word. I was already dealing with my eldest yelling and screaming at me. I’m hoping this spring I’ll never have to see that traffic circle again.

I had an accident in February. The driver was a teenage driver; all he did was yell and scream and threaten me. In my 40+ years of driving, this is the first time this has happened. I was taught in driver education to remain

To the person who Said “Yeah, we know you have the right of way:” Do you really? I don’t think so. I think that you have the idea that no matter the circumstances, you have the right of way. Sorry, wrong! In the

instance you described, you are wrong. You have no “right” to move into the oncoming lane of traffic as long as there are vehicles in that lane. No matter what, you do not have that right. Other drivers are not required to move over for you just because you have something blocking your lane. I am positive that any judge would tell you the same. As for the police, they never pass in the opposite lane unless they have their lights on indicating an emergency, in which case the law says drivers are required to move to the shoulder to let them pass. You are not the police. You do not have that right to require drivers to move over.

On Friday, February 28th, I was at the Crosby’s gas station in Brockport. I was trying to purchase a gas gift card for my grandson. When I was told that they do not accept Credit Cards or Checks, I was extremely upset because I didn’t have enough cash and I had traveled a distance to get the card. I wasn’t sure what

round hay bale, much enjoyed! I called local jewelers because a stone in my ring was loose. Lambert Jewelers gave the lowest quote. I went in the next day and received fantastic customer service and was amazed when they fixed my ring on the spot. I asked how much I owed and was shocked when he said not to worry about it since it took two minutes to fix. I definitely will be recommending them to friends and family. Thank you!

I really agree with getting rid of plastic bags. What I don’t understand is why grocery stores do not train their employees on how to pack the reusable bags. On five separate trips to the store to do my shopping, I have had to ask the cashier to please keep my meat separate from my cleaning products. Is this not common sense? I have come home with my frozen foods on top of my sliced bread and ice cream with my bar soap. Also, why am I given such a hard time when I ask for a freezer bag for certain items? I spend a lot of money every week on food and firmly believe I keep my grocery store in business. Please train your employees to pack grocery bags!

Allow employees to telecommute. Based on an analysis of data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2005-2014 American Community Survey conducted by GlobalWorkplaceAnalytics.com, a typical business would save $11,000 per person per year if it allowed its employees to work from home just half the time. Those cost-savings can be traced to numerous factors, and lower utility costs in the office as well as the need for less office space are among them.

STEPS TO ACHIEVE A BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE Many people face the challenge of balancing work and family. Workloads may be hefty on both fronts, and the pursuit of a healthy balance between home and career may seem like an unattainable goal. Stress can build from feelings of being pulled in too many directions. According to Mental Health America, stress can compromise a person’s ability to concentrate, lead to feelings of irritability or depression, negatively affect personal relationships, and weaken immune systems, increasing a person’s susceptibility to a variety of ailments. Research even indicates chronic stress may double a person’s risk of having a heart attack. The desire to have a fulfilling career and a full life at home is a goal shared by millions of people across the globe. But it’s important that one’s pursuit of such goals not come at the expense of personal health. Finding the right balance between work and family requires some maneuvering and practice, but it can be achieved with planning, organization and communication.
