SAFETY IN NUMBERS: WHY IT PAYS TO REPLACE HEADLIGHT BULBS IN PAIRS When it comes to vehicle maintenance, the rule of two has long reigned among professional automotive technicians and driving safety advocates. In accordance to this rule, drivers replacing important parts in their cars and trucks, such as tires, brakes, shocks and wiper blades, should always do so in pairs. Replacing parts in pairs can ensure vehicles are properly balanced and functioning safely. But it’s not just tires, brakes and other big-ticket components that should be replaced in pairs. Vehicle lighting plays an integral role in keeping drivers and their passengers safe, and motorists should exercise the same caution regarding their vehicles’ headlights, taillights and turn signals that they do when maintaining the rest of their cars and trucks.

No Job Too Big or Too Small ENERGY-SAVING TIPS Address any leaks or drafts. Drafty windows and doorways can make the air inside homes feel warmer in the summer and colder in the winter. As autumn weather grows colder, homeowners can perform simple inspections around windows and doorways to determine if they have any leaks. On a cold and/or windy day, place a hand near all windows and doors to feel if there are any leaks. Use caulk or another type of sealant to address leaks so you can keep cold air out and set your thermostat to a reasonable, eco-friendly temperature.

GENERAL CONTRACTING

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A pesky health problem should clear up soon. Meanwhile, travel -- both for personal as well as for business reasons -- is strong in the Aries aspect this week, and well into the next. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Look for Bovines to be on the move this week, whether it’s traveling for fun or for business. Other “moves” include workplace adjustments and, for some, relationship changes. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Geminis who have just gone through a hectic period involving job and/or family matters might want to take some well-earned time out to relax and restore those drained energy levels. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A romantic situation seems to have stalled, just when the Moon Child was expecting it to go forward. Could that be a bad case of miscommunication going on. Talk it over openly and honestly. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Showing a genuine interest in something that’s important to a friend, family member or colleague could open a communication line that had been pretty much shut down for a while. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Making a potentially life-changing decision takes as much knowledge as you can gather, plus determination and patience. Take your time working it out. Don’t let anyone rush you. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You should be back on schedule and heading in the right direction after clearing up a misunderstanding. But there could still be some setbacks. If so, correct them immediately. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A business matter keeps you pretty busy, but try to squeeze in time to be with family as well as close friends. You need the good vibrations you get from people who care for you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Investing in an attractive prospect (business or personal) with little or no information can be risky. Avoid future problems by getting all the facts before you act. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Someone close to you might have an unexpected reaction to a decision you feel you’re prepared to make. Listen to his or her point of view. It could prove to be surprisingly helpful. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Don’t give up yet. That once warm, personal relationship that seems to be cooling off fast could recover with some tender, loving care, and who better than you to provide it? PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Career matters are strong this week. You might want to enter a training program to enhance your skills. Also, consider getting professional help in preparing a brilliant resume. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of respecting the feelings of others, which is one reason people feel comfortable having you in their lives.

Portable vs. Standby Generators Prepare your hom e for a pow er outage (Family Features) Understanding the distinction betw een these options w ill help any family determine w hich is the better choice for their home.

• A portable generator is an immediate, but temporary, solution. A portable gas generator is less expensive than a standby unit and doesn’t require installation time. Its benefits have limits, as it can only pow er a few home appliances for a few hours before needing refueling.

• A standby generator w ith an automatic transfer sw itch provides a seamless and permanent backup pow er solution. It is professionally installed outside the home and can pow er more of your home’s appliances for long periods of time. Pow ered by natural gas or liquid propane, recent pow er management technology has allow ed homes to still receive w hole-house backup electricity, but w ith a smaller, more affordable generator than in years past. W ith an emergency kit on hand and the right backup pow er source available, the frustration of w eathering a storm can be greatly lessened.

HANDYMEN/WOMEN CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

As w inter w ears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold w eather climates to experience some cabin fever. W inter w eather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear. Wash your car at a commercial car wash. Some vehicle owners may enjoy washing their cars at home in their driveways. But getting a car washed at a professional car wash can conserve substantial amounts of water. That’s because many new car wash facilities employ water reclamation systems that reuse water. According to San Diego Car Care, a professional car wash that employs water reclamation technology, each car washed at their facility consumes just nine to 15 gallons of water per wash. That’s a considerable savings compared to washing at home, as the State of Maryland’s Department of the Environment estimates that 100 gallons of water are consumed during a single 10-minute car wash at home using a garden hose.

Freshen Up For Spring Cabinet Color Trends For a long time, white has dominated kitchen design. But it may have to share the trend spotlight as pale or muted gray, blue and green cabinet colors shake things up a bit. If you’re not ready for a complete cabinet overhaul, consider a fresh coat of paint on lower cabinets or highlight an island with a different color. This will add some visual interest and a layer of detail, especially when the primary cabinet color is white and you use a deeper color on an island, desk area or banquette.

Proudly Serving W N Y Customers Since 1996 TAKING THE PAIN OUT OF LIVE EVENT MANAGEMENT (NAPSI)—Anyone involved in running a theater, festival, or a sporting or live music event knows all too well the difficulty of doing it on your own. Some event managers turn to third parties like Eventbrite or Ticketmaster to get help with critical ticket sales, but one of the biggest pain points is finding an effective ticketing solution that supports their brand. When ticketing, marketing, fundraising and donation activities are not synchronized, event managers spend more time managing their business rather than the event itself. This leads to lost profits and angry patrons. Rick Blair, co-founder of Artisan Center Theater in Hurst, TX, went through years of trying different ticket brokers to increase sales, but was put off by the high fees and lack of personal attention. He also found that the solutions he tried did not work well with his other tools. “I had separate platforms for ticketing, marketing, website updates and donor management. None of them talked to each other and the entire process was a mess,” he said.

PLUMBING

Two years ago, he discovered the Vendini ticketing platform. Now the theater has an all-in-one system to handle VIP alerts and online, mobile and box office ticket sales that integrates with e-mail, social and direct marketing. By using Vendini’s Patron Connect, Blair and his team are notified when a donor is coming to the show and where they will be sitting. “When I get the alert, I can rush to my office, write a thank-you card, and slip it onto the donor’s seat before they arrive. That has resulted in many new donations because everyone appreciates a personal touch. Patron Connect is one of my most powerful marketing tools.” Vendini makes event execution simpler and faster. Event managers can create an event, specify dates and times, set pricing, and start selling tickets in minutes. Vendini’s live event management software helps managers like Blair run events more easily and effectively. Learn More: For more information, go to www.vendini.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

LIFE IS LOUD—BUT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY A QUIET HOME (NAPSI)—Home life is changing, so sound dampening is more important than ever. Life is getting louder inside and around the home. Televisions, home theaters, computers and video games blare from almost every room. Family cell phones ring or buzz. Life gets loud. So much so, in fact, that the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says as many as 26 million Americans have high-frequency hearing loss likely caused by exposure to excessive noise. Excessive noise is also linked to tinnitus, sleep deprivation, cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of mental illness. A German study found that depression and anxiety increased as annoyance from noise increased. Fortunately, there can be a way to protect yourself and your family. Your home’s insulation can do more than keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The right kind can help transform your home into a quiet retreat and sanctuary from the outside world. The next time you have the opportunity to reinsulate your home, soundproofing insulation can be an excellent choice to help you escape everyday noise. Stone wool insulation is a top choice for professional recording studios since it’s an excellent acoustic barrier that actually absorbs the sound. One, Rockwool Safe ‘n’ Sound stone wool insulation, is a performance-tested product that provides higher sound absorption against low-frequency (bass) ranges that other types of insulation struggle to block. In addition, it’s: • Easily cut • Noncombustible, with a melting point of approximately 2,150° F • Fire resistant • Not likely to rot or promote the growth of fungi or mildew

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Socially Distancing According to your Zodiac Sign Aries (Mar 21-Apr 19): You love a little competition. Try out a new fitness regimen, like the Couch to 5k program, and plan a future race or marathon. Taurus (Apr 20-May 20): Your home always looks great, but a little re-decorating never hurt anyone! Pro tip: take pictures of each room on your phone first to get an objective view of what you would like to change. Gemini (May 21-Jun 20): That good idea you’ve been sitting on? It’s time to come up with a stellar business plan. Don’t know where to start? Resist the isolating internet this time, and try emailing a local business leader you admire to set up a phone call – they would love to help, and the time to network is now! Cancer (Jun 21-Jul 22): You hate the idea of avoiding the people you love, but they understand and really do appreciate your thoughtfulness. Get close instead to the authors that inspire you. Copy out a paragraph you especially love, then give the story your own spin. Have your family do the same, then compare your creations! Leo (Jul 23-Aug 22): This is a time of opportunity for you. The stock market is on sale and you are not afraid to buy! Isolation got you down? Here’s some fun suggestions on how you can help

“flatten the curve” now! Scorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21): Everything is an argument nowadays! By sharpening your own debate skills, you might actually build bridges instead of burning them. Get started with a fun read like Mastering Logical Fallacies (Withey) before turning to the prisoner’s dilemma. Is it time for a career in politics? Sagittarius (Nov 22-Dec 21): Your professional success is borne of your energy and enthusiasm. Channel these traits into refreshing the space around your home, like a garden or deck. It might seem like slow going at first, but “it does not matter how slowly you go, as long as you do not stop” (Confucius). Your investment will be rewarded sooner rather than later. Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 19): Staying at home for you means expanding your reach! Move out of your comfort zone and organize friends and family to write cards for residents of the local nursing homes. The joy of small, random acts of kindness will spread to all areas of your life. Aquarius (Jan 20-Feb 18): Your bunker is filled with nothing but sheet masks, foie gras and red wine. Good thing, too, because the Metropolitan Opera is offering “Nightly Met Opera Streams” for free every evening at 7:30pm at metopera.org. If you’re fancy and you know it clap your hands! Pisces (Feb 19-Mar 20): Now is the time to become the master chef you always knew you were! Make your meal plan, break out the cookbooks and get to it. Remember to take your time and enjoy the process. By offering to safely deliver meals to those in need, your culinary fame will only increase.

WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees. To learn more about Carhartt’s latest pants and knee pads, visit www.Carhartt.com. To watch the brand’s latest video, “61 Workers, One Mission,” visit the Carhartt channel on YouTube.

HOW DO WE KNOW LASIK IS SAFE? (NAPSI)—For those thinking about their vision correction options, the question “Is LASIK safe?” is likely top of mind. To answer, ophthalmologist and chair of the Refractive Surgery Clinical Committee for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, John Vukich, M.D., provides hard data: LASIK has been around for a long time, 20 years, with 19.1 million procedures in the U.S. alone. An enormous amount of research has been conducted: There are more than 7,000 peer-reviewed clinical studies on LASIK performance, safety and outcomes. Based on that science, we know LASIK is very safe and has a less than 1 percent risk of sight-threatening complications. In fact, studies show LASIK is safer than long-term contact lens wear, where the risk of infection is actually pretty high. The patient satisfaction rate with LASIK is more than 96 percent, the highest of any elective medical procedure available today. However, LASIK isn’t for everyone. The only way to know for certain is to have a thorough eye exam with a highly qualified refractive surgeon to find out if you are a good candidate and then decide if it is right for you and your vision.

DIETING AND DINING OUT Dining out is big business. A 2016 Consumer Reports survey of more than 68,000 subscribers projected that Americans would spend $720 billion at restaurants in 2016 alone. That equates to nearly half of every food dollar spent in the United States. Dining out is a great way to try new things, experience new cultures without traveling overseas and spend time with friends and family. But men and women who are dieting or trying to gain greater control over the foods they eat may be nervous about dining out. Many restaurants feature nutritious foods that won’t compromise dieters’ goals of eating healthy. Dieters concerned about veering off course when they dine out can take the following steps to stay on course. Research menus before choosing a restaurant. Apps such as Grubhub and Seamless make it easier than ever for diners to explore menus before booking reservations. Diners can utilize such apps or their corresponding websites to peruse menus so they can rest easy knowing they will ultimately patronize restaurants that won’t compromise their commitments to eating healthy. Order an appetizer instead of an entrée. Controlling portion sizes can help dieters lose weight and keep the weight off. But many restaurants understandably serve large portions in an effort to ensure their customers get enough to eat and don’t feel cheated when the bill is presented. Dieters worried about entrée portions and their ability to avoid the temptation to eat large portions can order exclusively from the appetizers menu. Appetizers are meant to be shared, so they should be filling when eaten by just one person. And many restaurants’ appetizers menus are just as varied as their entrée offerings. Skip or split dessert. Few people have the time or ability to prepare restaurant-style desserts at home. That makes desserts even more special when dining out. However, dieters may want to skip dessert if the dessert offerings are limited to high-calorie, sugar-laden offerings. Dieters who simply must indulge in dessert can split desserts with fellow diners or opt for low-calorie fare such as fruit. Dining out is incredibly popular, and dieters don’t have to avoid their favorite restaurants.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. Excerpt from

Elpis Israel by John Thomas …It has been the purpose of God from the foundation of the world, to set up a kingdom and empire of nations, which shall supersede all others previously existing upon the globe. …The development of this imperial constitution of the world, …when brought to the birth, will have occupied six days of a thousand years each in its formation. No topic can surpass this in interest and importance to every man that breathes the breath of life. God has made the belief of the things concerning it a condition of partaking in the glory, honor, and incorruptibility, which belong to it. Whatever ignorance may be overlooked, ignorance of the things pertaining to this kindgdom alienates men from the life of God. This is equivalent to saying, that no man can attain to eternal life who does not believe the gospel; for the subject matter of the gospel is this very kingdom which it is the purpose of God to establish for the Son of Man and the saints. reativity flows around Shawn Dunwoody like a living aura. The self-described director, producer, designer, maker, influencer, developer, and artist leads Dunwoode Visual Consulting and a group called the Fruitbelt Project. He also collaborates with communities to create local murals and creates the Rochester-inspired comic book series, Legion of Legends. “The creative process is how I approach things,” shared Dunwoody. “It surrounds us in every breath. Art is a way to connect with individuals and surrounds us in every way, shape and form.” Dunwoody added that everyday items like street signs and even the very way a town is planned is an extension of that creative community. “It is a way to connect with communities and families to shape the future,” he added. Dunwoody recently completed the colorful mural on the corner of Main and Chapel Streets in Mount Morris which embodies the vibrant complexity of the town’s history and culture. “I first sat down with the lead team of folks in the community,” shared Dunwoody. “I couldn’t have community participation due to space and level of detail, but people could share ideas with me.” Dunwoody explained that while he had a preliminary concept, the mural grew and developed along the way. He recalls being impressed by the town’s leap of faith. “It was trust,” he said. “When I presented my project, it wasn’t a finished piece. To have someone trust me to do this without absolutely knowing the outcome was incredible.” “Women’s rights and the Haudenosaunee, photos people showed me, the town’s Puerto Rican population and the Coqui... all these were stories and connection points,” he recalled. “I was learning and figuring out what would go where.” The result is a stunning” Not everyone embraced the project at first, but as Dunwoody welcomed and incorporated input during his project, many came to believe this mural would be beneficial. These feelings were further strengthened when residents were invited to add their signatures to the mural, recording the voices which had shaped it and made it a part of their community. This aspect of art-helping people find their point of engagement and connection– particularly interests Dunwoody. “I think that is what it is really all about,” he explained. “Feeling that one point of connection with a creative moment. That is why I engage the community as much as possible.” Speaking of community connections, Dunwoody has also launched a new twist on superheroes, his Legion of Legends. This groundbreaking comic book series centers around the well-known historical figures and landmarks of Rochester. These include such people as Susan B. Anthony, Frederick Douglass and George Eastman while making reference to iconic buildings in Downtown Rochester, Genny and K3G, the Red Wings’ based Red and the Amerks’ inspired Moose, the Royals, even garbage plates combined with plate tectonics!

“Everyone has been a superhero at some point,” observed Dunwoody. “We can address issues like nuclear weapons and racial divide if it is put in the context of the superhero world. It can become tangible and accessible. I am working with a writer to address current issues like human trafficking but in the context of slavery combined with someone who can fly.” Dunwoody has visited schools to share his work, and students have taken an interest. “They want to know how my characters got Shawn Dunwoody with cutout of Legion of Legends character, Frederick Douglass, during his visit to their powers. For example, Susan B. Byron-Bergen Central School, Photo Gretchen Spittler Anthony has superwoman strength and impenetrable skin. Students drew their own superheroes as well, which was cool to see.” Dunwoody wants to be an example for students. “I want to be what I wanted to see when I was little,” he clarified. “When I was a kid, I wanted to see that it was possible to do what I am doing now. For kids who want to be in a creative field, those role models typically aren’t coming to their school. I want to let young folks know that there are creative career paths that can be attained. Hold tight and don’t be afraid to dream!” Dunwoody insists each person has creativity and is uniquely valuable. “You write your name, don’t you? That’s a drawing!” he exclaimed. “You dressed yourself this morning? You’re a fashion designer! Even each walk is individual unto itself and has its own beat.” “To deprive the universe of your smile or your being is to rob the universe of the once-in-a-lifetime piece of artwork that will never exist again,” he continued with conviction. “You will only exist once in the universe, so be a unique, creative force for change and be beautiful. Be that one moment in time that will never be seen again!” Dunwoody is currently planning projects in Avon, Livonia and a second project in Mount Morris. All of these will be community projects where everyone is welcome to join. Love this story? Check out this weeks other stories at gvpennysaver.com: •

How to practice social distancing during a pandemic

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel --* On March 22, 1765, in an effort to raise funds to pay off debts, the British government passes the Stamp Act. It levied a direct tax on all materials printed for commercial and legal use in the colonies, from newspapers and pamphlets to playing cards and dice. * On March 21, 1804, the Napoleonic Code is approved in France. The Code strengthened the authority of men over their families, deprived women of any individual rights, and reduced the rights of illegitimate children. All male citizens also were granted equal rights under the law, but colonial slavery was reintroduced. * On March 20, 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s anti-slavery novel, “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” is published. The novel was so widely read that when President Abraham Lincoln met Stowe, he reportedly said, “So this is the little lady who made this big war.”

Social distancing protocols encourage people to avoid crowds, such as those at concerts and sporting events. As COVID-19 continued to spread across the world, it quickly became evident that the public would have to take drastic measures to slow the transmission. In addition to practicing generalized sanitation and good hygiene, people in some of the hardest-hit clusters were advised to take additional, more aggressive measures. Quarantines and travel restrictions were implemented, and the term "social distancing" became a buzzword. Social distancing involves people keeping a physical distance from each other during disease outbreaks in order to slow transmission rates. Social distancing also is employed to lessen the impact of the disease on the medical care system, which quickly can become overwhelmed with a high number of cases presenting in a short period of time. In best-case scenarios, social distancing also may enable a few people to avoid infection until a vaccine is available. So how can people socially distance themselves? Here are some of the recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and other leading health groups. · Opt out of group events. Steer clear of events, whether meetings, sports games, conferences, and other gatherings where large amounts of people congregate together. · Stick to non-contact greetings. Avoid hugs, kisses and handshakes. Substitute a smile, a wave or a bumping of elbows, instead. · Work from home. Many companies are now equipped to allow employees to work from home all the time or a portion of the time. Businesses can encourage employees to stay home and utilize the internet to get their work done. · Alter shopping schedules. Try to visit stores in the early morning or late at night when they are less likely to be crowded. · Make changes in worship practices. Celebrants may have to make modifications to the way they worship. The Catholic Diocese of Trenton, NJ, recently advised all diocesan churches to halt the distribution of the most precious blood (wine) from communal chalices; encouraged clergy and eucharistic ministers to sanitize their hands before

distributing the eucharist; and parishioners to avoid contact during the sign of peace. Common sense is key to stall disease transmission, and social distancing can be an important public health measure. TF204940 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it.

LVCO Senior Nutrition Program Avon (585) 226-6353 • Dansville (585) 335-8130

For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes.

In response to COVID-19 concerns and to promote prevention, ALL LCOFA NUTRITION SITES are closed as of 3/16/20 until further notice.

“People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Does Ulcerative Colitis Preclude Pregnancy?

Hearing Aids As low as $600*

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I need some hope. My 24-year-old granddaughter, recently married, came down with ulcerative colitis. Right now, she is getting two Humira injections a month. She has lost so much weight and her diet is so limited. Do things normally get better? Will she ever be able to become pregnant? It has been about four months. She is presently seeing a GI doctor. Should she be under the care of a specialist? -- L.M.O.S. ANSWER: Ulcerative colitis is one of the inflammatory bowel diseases. The underlying cause is not known, but there is a familial predisposition. Women are more often diagnosed, and the leading time of diagnosis is in the 20s. There is a wide range of severity, with some people doing well with topical treatments (suppositories or enemas), some needing oral medication, and people with more severe disease needing much more powerful agents, such as the adalimumab (Humira) your granddaughter needs. Fortunately, those kinds of drugs have approximately a 60% to 70% success rate. Diet is important for people with UC of any severity; however, as the disease becomes better controlled it is likely that she will have a less restricted diet. A GI doctor is a gastroenterologist, the specialist for inflammatory bowel diseases. There are some gastroenterologists who specialize even further, making IBD their area of particular expertise. Pregnancy is certainly possible in women with IBD. However, they should be in remission before attempting pregnancy, and her medications may need to be adjusted for maximum safety. There are many places to get additional information, but I recommend the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation website as an excellent starting point. It can be found at www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, I started getting Raynaud’s. I can remember from my youth that my father had it, so it didn’t seem too terrible. It’s not just the fingertips that turn white, but also some of my toes are affected. I asked people who know of it or have it how one gets this. What is the cause? No one knows. So I asked my doctor, and even he said he did not know. How do I get these episodes, and what can I do to prevent them? -- R.S. ANSWER: Raynaud phenomenon is an exaggerated response to cold or stress, causing color changes in the skin of the fingers and toes. There is a long list of causes of Raynaud phenomenon. Often, no cause is ever found (in which case it is called primary Raynaud, which just means we don’t know what’s causing it). The most common known causes are the autoimmune rheumatic diseases, especially scleroderma, lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome. Hypothyroidism is an unusual cause, and some drugs can cause it as well. The current thinking is that primary RP is caused by abnormalities in the alpha receptors in blood vessels (alpha receptors respond to adrenaline and similar molecules). Keeping the whole body -- and especially the hands -- warm is the first step. Sudden temperature changes can trigger the effect. Warming the hands in warm water at the onset of an attack can stop it. Anxiety makes it worse, so a positive attitude can really affect this condition. Medications, such as amlodipine, may be necessary for prevention in more severe cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. HEALTHY COOKING TECHNIQUES

Choose smart fats. All oils are loaded in calories, but healthy oils can still be used without sacrificing flavor. Olive oil is an unsaturated fat that is a much healthier choice than butter or saturated fats. When cooking with oil, do so in moderation.

Think about baking foods. Baking is handy for more than breads and desserts. Baking is one method of cooking that may not require the addition of fat. Meats that are baked can be placed on top of a rack, so that excess fat drips off and is contained in the bottom of the pan.

“You cannot prevent the birds of sorrow from flying over your head…but you can prevent them from nesting in your hair.” ~ Chinese adage

There is no one who hasn’t experienced misfortune… illness, the loss of a loved one, businness reverses… yet we see some people who have overcome their sorrows and others whose sorrows have overcome them. There is no way to shield ourselves from unhappiness and disappointments, life is full of them. We must try to develop the ability to accept them with a sense of proportion. So, let us not pray for uninterrupted good fortune, but rather ask for the strength to meet whatever the day brings. Some people are unaware that complete funeral arrangements, including financing, can be made well in advance of need. Our plan provides peace of mind and will spare loved ones the task of making painful decisions under stress. Ask us for details.

A special shout out and warm thank you to one of the kindest of men on earth, Tom O’May. It would take every page in this publication plus more to acknowledge everything you so selflessly do for others. Wishing you & your entire family good health & may all the goodness that you do come back to you tenfold.

A delightful surprise on March 5, 2020 at Cracker Barrel, Henrietta when my lunch bill was paid by someone unknown to me. I have heard of this happening to others but never expected to be the recipient of such a thoughtful gesture. It made my day in fact, probably the whole week! And I certainly will “Pay It Forward!”

Thank you to the kind people who started the Avon Acts/Community Needs Facebook page. Community members are supporting each other by offering hard-to-find items, support and resources, filling requests for help and just general kindness. All Cindy from the safety of home.

My son is heavily into collecting basketball cards, but we have not been able to find any. The shelves are always bare, and the stock man said that grown men are following him and buying up all the cards for eBay value. Thanks. I bet when you grown men were little, the grown men at that time let you enjoy card collecting. I bet you even had a binder full! Too bad my son will not get the chance because you care more about value and GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

making money than allowing kids to have a chance to buy a pack. Can you just leave one? He does not care about value; he wants to collect his favorite players. This is madness. To be a child who wants to collect basketball cards in today's resell everything market, you are out of luck. Adult men have bought every Prizm pack in every [store] in the area.

Thursday the 12th, we had a service call with Spectrum because of difficulties we were experiencing. I was very hesitant because it was quite bothersome not having internet and phone service. I didn’t know what to expect. We were at our wit’s end. Well, I was very pleased with the TQA representative they sent to our home. Ryan was right on spot, courteous, and did indeed find the problems. He rectified them, explained what was going on, and I am very pleased and satisfied. He renewed my faith in Spectrum. Thank you very much for your help, Ryan.

walked by me. One of them looked at me and leaned over and coughed on me. I turned around, and I saw him laugh with his friend. How would you feel if you got me sick and I passed away? Shame on you and the parent who raised you.

This is for the people who have a pet cat that they don’t want anymore and decide to drop it off on my property to let it roam because I have a lot of barns. In the past, I know one cat was taken to the hospital for mental health issues, one was taken to jail for trespassing, and two were eaten by coyotes. I’m not sure about the others. Now if you can’t afford to put an ad in the newspaper to give your pet a new home for free or if you can’t take it to the Humane Society or Lollypop Farm, then knock on my door, tell me the cat's name and drop off some food once a month.

WAYS ESTABLISHED PROFESSIONALS CAN IMPROVE THEIR RÉSUMÉS Rather than emphasize what you did, highlight what you plan to do. This means giving greater weight to the expertise that will translate into your new position. Chances are you can find skills that you honed in one or more jobs that translate into credentials that can be used on another. All of the skills mentioned should be relevant to your career objective and not just added to pad the résumé. Therefore, unless your brief stint waiting tables exemplifies how you developed customer service skills, eliminate it.

Statement from Livingston County Administrator Ian Coyle on the Declaration of a Local State of Emergency in Livingston County. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) is here in the United States, spreading in New York and is impacting daily lives in ways we have not seen in generations. COVID-19 is classified as a pandemic. New York State recently declared a State of Emergency to address the statewide response to this concern. Livingston County, effective March 14, 2020 at 5pm, issued a local state of emergency. Livingston County as a public service and public health provider is on the front lines of the response and preparations for the virus to hit within our geographic borders. While as of the writing of this message there were still no confirmed cases in Livingston County, we anticipate there will be many and that growth will happen in the near future. There are likely many positive cases in our community right now. Work, school, personal and social life will experience some changes from the norms and habits that were in place pre-pandemic. We are entering into uncharted territory. Change is happening by the hour. I take comfort – and you should too as residents of Livingston County – in that we have what is called a full-service county and we are thus appropriately set up to handle such emergent situations. We have trained, professional nursing staff in our County Health Department. We have countywide Emergency Medical Services. We have road patrol in the Sheriff ’s Office, an Emergency Management Department, a formal Disaster Response Team, a next-gen 911 Center (including a back-up 911 center) and most importantly an incredibly dedicated group of public servants across multiple disciplines prepared, trained and ready to serve you in this time of need. This is indeed the new normal for the foreseeable future. We need your help in that we need you to be to calm, safe, patient and understanding. I, as County Administrator, have met with all of our County departments over the last two weeks, and we have continuity of operations plans (COOPs) in place to deliver essential services in these trying times. We met to address capabilities and allocate resources for the community in advance of positive cases. I have approved additional staffing and we have taken steps to secure additional supplies to make sure residents are safe and prepared. The messaging and guidance from the CDC and the NYS Department of Health has been centered on reducing density and gatherings and the promotion of additional testing to reduce the risks and exposures. With the addition of 28 testing sites in the state and the expansion of expedited testing, we are expecting to better assess the community exposure in a matter of days. The goal is to not overwhelm the local health and hospital system when the positive case-count begins to escalate. Relative to public interactions, we have closed visitation to the Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation (CNR) and County Jail. We have suspended operations of the senior nutrition congregate meal sites and also suspended activities of the Garden of Life Adult Day Care at the CNR. Most County operations will continue and the buildings will be open for services. Because of the Governor’s recent directive on workforce reduction, the County is at minimum staffing and thus there are limited opportunities for visiting County departments. What can you do as a resident of Livingston County? • Be patient and know that processes, policies and everyday norms will be changing. • Wash your hands and practice good hygiene. • Stay home from work if you are sick. • Check on loved ones. • Promote and practice social distancing. • Be prepared, but not scared. • Instead of physically visiting a county building, use alternative means. Please mail, email, or call. • Please follow federal, state, and local guidance and orders. They are being implemented with your health and welfare in mind. And finally – specific to the health of our community – if you have a fever, cough or trouble breathing please call your health care provider to assess. If you feel as though you may have had exposure to COVID-19, please call the County Department of Health at 585-243-7290. Call 1-877-280-6775 or visit www.livingstoncounty.us/1207/COVID-19 for more information. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
