RIDESHARING SAFETY TIPS Ridesharing is a growing trend among travelers from all walks of life. Some proponents of ridesharing support the concept because they feel it’s an eco-friendly means of traveling, while others find it’s a great way to save money. Still others employ third-party ridesharing services as a responsible, affordable way to travel when going out for a night on the town. With a greater number of people sharing rides and interacting with strangers than ever before, safety while ridesharing is an issue to take seriously. While ridesharing trips often occur without incident, there have been some instances of violent altercations involving drivers and passengers. According to the Taxicab, Limousine and Paratransit Association, ridesharing companies use a background check service to confirm criminal convictions and to make sure drivers are legally able to drive. However, these services may not perform FBI fingerprinting checks conducted by law enforcement officials, whereas taxi drivers are subjected fingerprinting. So some ridesharing drivers who have committed crimes in the past but have never been caught may pass ridesharing background checks, but they might not pass tests that taxi companies would insist they submit to, such as fingerprinting tests. While ridesharing, whether it entails carpooling or using an established ridesharing service, can be convenient, passengers must take steps to ensure their own safety when sharing rides.

A CLEAN CAR IS MONEY IN THE BANK (NAPSI)—Purchasing a new car is a major financial investment. Keeping it clean can be an easy and inexpensive way to protect its resale and trade-in value.

Work performed by trained Detail Technicians with over 15 years experience

“Many motorists procrastinate when it comes to cleaning their vehicles,” said Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “Whether you do it yourself or have it cleaned professionally, proactively keeping your car clean on the outside and tidy on the inside will pay big dividends when it comes to maintaining your vehicle’s value over time.”

5843 Swamp Rd. • Conesus, NY

585.315.2642

The Car Care Council suggests five simple steps to keep a vehicle clean, helping protect it from the elements and preserve its value. • Declutter—Start the cleaning process by removing excess clutter from inside the car as it can be distracting and hazardous, especially when debris finds its way near the gas and brake pedals. Don’t forget to clear out items that have accumulated in the trunk as they can add extra weight and reduce fuel efficiency. • Clean the Interior—The next step is to thoroughly clean the interior, wash the windows, and clean and install floor mats. Be sure to vacuum on a regular basis. A clean and orderly interior lets you spot issues in the cabin so you can get them repaired before they get worse. • Wash the Exterior—Give your car a good wash from top to bottom using products specifically made for automobiles. Always clean the tires and wheels before washing the body and don’t use the same washing mitt or cloth for both. • Wax Twice a Year—Waxing not only protects a vehicle’s finish, it makes subsequent washing easier. Before proceeding, make sure there are no foreign particles on the paint. It’s important to note that waxing should be done in the shade, not direct sunlight. • Fix Chips—If you find minor paint damage, cover the paint chips as quickly as possible to prevent further damage. For a quick fix until you can get paint touch-up supplies, dab a little clear nail polish on the scratch. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. Free Guide: To order a free copy of the popular “Car Care Guide,” visit the council’s consumer education website, www.carcare.org. AUTOMOTIVE

DESIGN A GARDEN FOR ALL SENSES The lively sounds of the garden are created by the wildlife that come to pollinate and enjoy the environment gardeners have created. By choosing indigenous plants, gardeners can be sure that insects and small critters will seek refuge within the foliage. Songbirds also will add character to a yard. The Audubon Society suggests including a water source and a songbird border of shrubs along your property’s edge. Provide food sources and make sure they are located a fair distance from the main action of the yard so as not to scare off birds. Wait for musical chickadees, goldfinches, orioles, and cardinals to arrive and enjoy the accommodations.

One of the ways homeowners can keep their lawns looking lush and green is to aerate the turf when the need arises. Aerators perforate the soil with small holes. These holes allow air, nutrients and water to penetrate all the way to the roots, helping them grow deep and strong. Deep, strong roots are essential to healthy, lush lawns. While aeration can help many lawns, not every lawn will necessarily need to be aerated. Lawns that get heavy use, such as those that are often played on by children or pets, will likely benefit from periodic aeration. Feeling the lawn also can help homeowners determine if it needs to be aerated. Lawns that dry out quickly or feel spongy may be overcome with thatch, which can prevent lawns from getting the air, water and nutrients they need to thrive. Lawncare professionals recommend aerating lawns that contain thatch that is more than one-half inch. Thatch also can foster grub infestations, providing another benefit to removing it and aerating a lawn. When to aerate depends on the type of grass. Homeowners should consult with a lawncare professional about the best time to aerate their particular lawns, but it’s generally recommended that cool-season grasses be aerated in early spring or fall, while it’s best to aerate warm season grasses in late spring.

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes.

PAINTING - STAINING - SEALING Decks • Fences • Concrete • Gazebos • Play Sets (Sherwin Williams Products)

Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES Exterior Repairs & Upgrades • Gutter Cleaning Fence Installation • Demolition Due to the current health situation Dirty Chores is able to accommodate social distancing by communicating with clients primarily through email, USPS mail, text message and phone calls. Since we work outdoors, most concerns are avoided.

While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. To learn more, go to Fire Prevention at www.gobrick.com.

Updating Your Home’s Electrical System When it com es tim e to update the electrical system , it is alw ays best to w ork w ith licensed and bonded electricians w ho have the expertise to w ork w ith electrical w iring w ithout getting injured. This is not a do-it-yourself type of job since it requires specialized training. Electricians likely w ill recom m end upgrading the electrical panel to bring m ore pow er from the utility poles into the hom e. This can include replacing the existing m eter and circuit breaker box to allow it to handle m ore pow er or replacing item s that are obsolete or dangerous. M any older hom es are only capable of handling a m inim um num ber of am ps, utilizing just a few circuits. But now adays, w hen hom eow ners have far m ore electronics in their hom es than they once did, increased dem and on electricity can overload a circuit. Tripping a circuit breaker is a safety m easure to prevent the w ire from becom ing overheated and causing a fire. How ever, in som e old system s, the circuit breaker w ill not trip, and this can be problem atic. Rew iring a hom e is another step. Wire insulation can deteriorate over tim e, and new w ires m ay be needed. This can be m essy and tim e-consum ing, but it’s a sm all price to pay for safety. When rew iring an electrician also m ay suggest new outlets. POST-WINTER GARDEN PREP Turn the greenhouse into a clean house. Spring cleaning is not just for the interior of a home. Cleaning a greenhouse in advance of spring can help gardeners evict any overwintering pests that can threaten plant life once spring gardening season arrives. A thorough cleaning, which should include cleaning the inside of greenhouse glass and washing flower pots and plant trays, also can prevent plant diseases from surviving into spring.

HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION Install ceiling fans. Ceiling fans can be installed to reduce energy consumption in both summer and winter. In summer, ceiling fans can make home interiors more comfortable by circulating air around a room. That circulation can make rooms feel cooler, providing the same benefit of an air conditioner while consuming considerably less energy. In winter, reverse the rotation of ceiling fans so they circulate warm air and reduce reliance on heating systems.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) An unexpected problem should be handled as quickly as possible so that it doesn’t cause too much of a delay. Someone who knows what you’re facing could provide needed advice. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unsettling situation seems to be taking forever to be resolved. Fortunately, your Bovine aptitude for patience is strong this week, so you’ll be more than able to wait it out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking a stand against an uncalled-for situation involving a friend or co-worker isn’t easy, but somehow you’ll rise to the challenge and do it. Rely on advice from someone you trust. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) There are still some questions on all sides that need to be dealt with in order to allow hurt feelings to heal. Get your workplace tasks done early so that you can devote more time to loved ones. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Consider a new spring makeover that will show all you Leos and Leonas in your best light. A new hairdo and some fashionable new clothes can help put a fresh glow on your image. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Some stormy, emotional weather can blow up in the workplace when an irate co-worker has strong words for you. But if you believe right is on your side, you’ll be able to ride it out. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Creating more balance in your life is especially important now so that you’re not distracted when you get into projects that will make demands on both your physical and mental energies. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) As much as you enjoy being right when others are not, show your generous side by offering to use what you know to everyone’s benefit. This way, you gain admirers and avoid resentment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) This is a good week for the Archer to aim at healing relationships. Whether it’s at home, at work or among your friends, get everyone to set things straight and make a fresh start. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Although you like things done your way, this is a good time to listen to ideas from others. You might even find yourself agreeing with one or more of their suggestions. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Aspects favor positive action to reclaim your ideas from someone who might want the glory without doing any of the work. Expect to find many people rallying to support you. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You might feel uneasy about taking that step forward at work or in your private life. But who knows better than you that while treading water keeps you afloat, it doesn’t get you anywhere. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a way of creating positive attitudes and making people feel good about themselves. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? Children have long been drawn to expressing themselves through art. According to developmental experts, coloring stimulates creativity, contributes to better handwriting, teaches color recognition, and can promote hand-eye coordination. Coloring books can help children learn to recognize boundaries and structure and develop spacial awareness. Adults, too, have recognized the benefits that coloring can bring, which includes stress reduction and improved focus. Crayons have long been a favorite tool for coloring, and over the years certain colors have emerged as fan favorites. Crayola® conducted polls in 1993 and 2000 to find out the most popular colors of crayons in America. Blue was voted the favorite both times. Six other shades of blue, including cerulean, midnight blue, aquamarine, periwinkle, denim and blizzard blue, finished among the top 10. Purple heart, caribbean green and cerise rounded out the top 10.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On March 30, 1867, U.S. Secretary of State William Seward signs a treaty with Russia to buy Alaska for $7 million. Despite the bargain price of roughly 2 cents an acre, the Alaskan purchase was ridiculed as "Seward's Folly" and "Seward's icebox." On March 31, 1889, the Eiffel Tower is dedicated in Paris in a ceremony presided over by Gustave Eiffel, its designer, and French Prime Minister Pierre Tirard. At 984 feet, the Eiffel Tower remained the world's tallest man-made structure until the completion of the Chrysler Building in New York in 1930. On April 1, 1970, President Richard Nixon signs legislation officially banning cigarette ads on television and radio. Nixon, who was an avid pipe smoker, supported the legislation at the increasing insistence of public health advocates.

Healthy eating options for seniors “Let food be thy medicine” is a quote attributed to Hippocrates, the ancient scholar considered to be the father of modern medicine. The saying relates to the notion that what people put in their bodies can heal and/or prevent certain conditions. For seniors with medicine cabinets full of over-the-counter and prescription medications, the idea of relying predominantly on food to promote optimal health may be tempting, and various foods can be particularly useful to the 50-and-over demographic. According to the World Health Organization, poor diet is a major contributor to many of the diseases that affect older people. Poor diet has been connected to the development of diabetes, and degenerative diseases such as osteoporosis also may be linked to the foods ones eat. The National Council for Aging Care says micronutrient deficiency is often a problem among the aging due to factors like lack of variety in diet and reduced food intake. Eating a variety of foods can provide all of the nutrients people need to stay healthy as they get older. Certain foods may be particularly helpful. · Brain-friendly foods: Foods such as avocado, leafy vegetables, sunflower seeds, blueberries, and salmon are good sources of vitamin E, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients that may help ward off dementias like Alzheimer’s disease, advises Sonas Home Health Care. · Anti-inflammatory foods: Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids may help prevent inflammation that can cause cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. Aging.com says foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, should be consumed at least twice per week. See next week’s article for more smart food choices for seniors.

DID YOU KNOW? Modern technology has forever transformed the classroom. As calculators replaced abacuses, mobile phone apps have now replaced calculators, and such advancements continue to change how students learn. One way schools are notably different from those of the past is through the absence of a once major component of the classroom layout. Chalkboards are either missing or completely retrofitted in modern learning environments. In the 1800s, slate blackboards were the new technology, replacing handheld tablets of wood or slate. Within the last few years, schools have increasingly opted for cleaner “white boards” or “smartboards,” which are digitally connected to computers and offer touch interfaces similar to those on tablets and smartphones. As ebooks replace textbooks and more assignments are handed in via digital documents, lockers may be the next to vanish.

…"Gospel" is a word which signifies good news; or glad tidings; and the gospel some particular good news. "Blessed," say the scriptures,” are they who know the joyful sound," or the gospel; and the reason is, because it makes known the "blessedness" which is to come upon the nations, and wlll give everyone an interest in it who believes and accepts it. The gospel of God is the good news of blessedness promised in the scriptures of the prophets; and summarily expressed in the saying, "In thee, Abraham, shall all nations of the earth be blessed." The making of this promise to Abraham is termed by Paul, the preaching of the gospel to Abraham; for, says he, "the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith preached before the gospel to Abraham, saying, 'in thee shall all nations be blessed"' (Gal. 3:8). This, he styles "the blessing of Abraham," which is to come upon the nations through Jesus Christ. Abraham holds a conspicuous place in relation to the blessedness of the gospel. He is named by Paul six times in the third chapter of Galatians which he concludes by saying, "if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham’s seed and heirs according to the promise." Hence, men are required to be Christ's that they may be Abraham's seed. But why is it so important to be of the seed of Abraham? For the very obvious reason, that as the promise was made to Abraham, it is only by being constitutionally "in him" that any son of Adam can obtain a participation in what belongs to Abraham.

(NAPSI)—Each year, more than 400 people die from unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and more than 20,000 visit the emergency room. CO poisoning can be prevented with a few precautions: What To Do • Never use portable electric generators, charcoal grills or other similar devices inside your home, garage or in any confined area that can let carbon monoxide collect. • Have your chimney, fireplace and woodstoves inspected before every heating season. • Turn off space heaters before leaving a room or going to sleep. • Never run your car engine for more than a few moments in a garage, even if the door to the outside is open. Fumes can build up quickly and can spread to the living area of your home. • Look for clues that home appliances may be malfunctioning. Common indicators include decreased hot water supply, soot on appliances, moisture inside windows, and furnaces not heating properly. • Install at least one carbon monoxide detector, connected to a monitoring center that operates 24/7, on every level of your home. Real protection comes from ADT—keeping your family safe from poisonous CO gas that can cause dizziness, unconsciousness and possibly death if undetected.

How to clean when faced with a shortage of supplies In light of concerns about COVID-19, various health organizations have issued specific instructions on how to maintain personal safety and cleanliness. These recommendations involve using common household products to sanitize homes, offices and public spaces. As people take such precautions, many are stocking up on extra essentials — resulting in shortages. Everything from hand sanitizers to paper towels may be hard to find on grocery store shelves, leaving some to wonder what they can do to remain safe without sanitizers. The Environmental Protection Agency states that coronaviruses are some of the easiest types of viruses to kill because they have an envelope around them that enables them to merge with other cells and infect them. If that protective coating can be disrupted, the virus can’t do its job. For those having trouble finding well-known cleaning agents, these alternatives may suffice.

Hot water and soap The reason hand-washing is at the top of the list of sanitizing methods is because it is so effective at washing away viruses and bacteria. Friction from scrubbing with soap and water can help break the protective envelope, states the EPA. Soap and water can clean all surfaces in a home, especially when applying a little extra elbow grease. Hydrogen peroxide As people clear isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) off the shelves, do not discount hydrogen peroxide. The CDC says household hydrogen peroxide at 3 percent concentration can deactivate rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold, within six to eight minutes of contact. Coronavirus is easier to destroy than rhinovirus, so hydrogen peroxide may be effective at combatting that virus as well. Natural items can be used for general cleaning, but have not been endorsed for use on COVID-19 disinfection. In lieu of shortages, white vinegar, baking soda pastes and citrus oils and juices could fill the void of chemically-based cleansers for other home tasks. Page 25

Use a humidifier to keep skin hydrated during the dry months and be sure to lather on moisturizer. Natural moisturizers like coconut oil and shea butter can act as protective barriers against harsh elements, sealing in moisture. In addition to hydrating on the outside, it is just as important to stay hydrated on the inside. By drinking water throughout the day, your skin can stay healthy and moisturized. Avoid Toxins, Specifically Allergens and Irritants. Choose moisturizers and skin care products that don’t contain common irritants, and opt for mild cleansers and moisturizers that are specifically labeled for sensitive skin. Castor oil is another moisturizer alternative that is natural and can be used on both the face and body. Layer Up. Lock in moisture and protect your skin from wind, rain and snow by wearing layers whenever you venture outside. The skin on your neck, face and hands is thinner than other areas of the body and therefore more sensitive to the effects of winter weather. Thermals, scarves and gloves can keep you warm and protect your skin from the cold, dry air. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

On Monday, the 9th of March, my family and I went to Krony’s. We always enjoy the delicious pizza and what I call calzones. Of course, what would Krony’s be without Joey. He simply is the best manager I have ever seen in a restaurant. Joey is just a great all-around person. He goes out of his way to make sure that everything is great. He is always so personable no matter how busy he may

My child is not perfect; no child is. However, when another child threatens to physically assault my child, that is one thing. If you follow through, there will be legal consequences. I will call the police on your child. This is not the 1980’s. Physical assault is a big deal, and if you, as a parent, allow your child to conduct themselves this way, then maybe you need to be investigated as well. I don’t think your child will be a tough guy to the police if and when they get called. That would be just step one in a nightmare GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

be. Joey makes sure to give his customers the attention they need to make them feel like they are family. Of course, Steve (Charlie), is very nice, as well. Joey, thanks for the garlic knots and stay as sweet as you are. In a world where people do not go out of their way to help others, it is delightful to know you.

I’d like to thank my employer, Bristol ID. By implementing a few new procedures and policies, they are doing their best to make it a safe environment during this uncertain time. Big thanks for all the staff of the local grocery stores for supporting our communities at this time!

Hannah Emmick is so wonderful and should be recognized for her caring and helpful spirit. Love that she is willing to help families with water and food. Love her! I emptied my pockets for a man to have meals for legal situation for you and your child. Teach your child to handle situations with class and communication, but I understand for some parents, conflict and police blotter fame is all they know. That inherited trait shines very brightly through your child. Too bad. Last month, I went into the grocery store, and while looking around, I saw a little one in her daddy’s arms. I noticed she had on a real cute dress with a matching hair band. I stopped to say ‘hi’ and left. As I was returning my cart mom, dad (each wearing coats) and their child were also leaving. To my shock, the toddler was still wearing only the light little dress with absolutely nothing else on her, no coat, blanket, etc. If they thought

a week. He went straight across the street to Burger King. Do what you can for others.

While checking out at Wegman’s last Sunday morning, I discovered I had forgotten my wallet. Facing embarrassment, I asked the girl at the checkout if I could it was not that cold enough for their daughter’s health, then why did they bother wearing coats themselves? Wake up parents and use some common sense! At least bring a warm blanket next time! Have you ever heard of pneumonia? I’d like to “rant” about a local corner gas station. call my wife hoping she could rescue me by phone. While on the phone, the girl proceeded to check out my purchases. I asked her to stop, but she told me that the kind man behind me was paying for my goods. I insisted on repaying him, but he said that it was his way of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. One Irishman to another. Thank you, Bill Bolin. I will surely pay it forward. You made my St. Patrick’s Day! Local restaurants - thank you for staying open to feed us. We are grateful!

customer. I exclusively used them even though I knew it was the highest place for prices around and spent $35 to $45 while stopping there and only there three times a week. I liked the two older men in charge. The mechanic, though very good, would make unnecessary comments about me or what I brought in to break the ice or amuse them. Even when they hired a new mechanic, his conversation became unprofessional as well. It hurt my feelings; they should’ve refrained from condescending comments. I tried another gas station, and it was run by all women. They were warm, friendly, talkative, respectful and apologetic when they were busy. I will now give my local business to them!

DIETING AND DINING OUT Dining out is big business. A 2016 Consumer Reports survey of more than 68,000 subscribers projected that Americans would spend $720 billion at restaurants in 2016 alone. That equates to nearly half of every food dollar spent in the United States. Dining out is a great way to try new things, experience new cultures without traveling overseas and spend time with friends and family. But men and women who are dieting or trying to gain greater control over the foods they eat may be nervous about dining out. Many restaurants feature nutritious foods that won’t compromise dieters’ goals of eating healthy. Dieters concerned about veering off course when they dine out can take the following steps to stay on course. Research menus before choosing a restaurant. Apps such as Grubhub and Seamless make it easier than ever for diners to explore menus before booking reservations. Diners can utilize such apps or their corresponding websites to peruse menus so they can rest easy knowing they will ultimately patronize restaurants that won’t compromise their commitments to eating healthy. Order an appetizer instead of an entrée. Controlling portion sizes can help dieters lose weight and keep the weight off. But many restaurants understandably serve large portions in an effort to ensure their customers get enough to eat and don’t feel cheated when the bill is presented. Dieters worried about entrée portions and their ability to avoid the temptation to eat large portions can order exclusively from the appetizers menu. Appetizers are meant to be shared, so they should be filling when eaten by just one person. And many restaurants’ appetizers menus are just as varied as their entrée offerings. Skip or split dessert. Few people have the time or ability to prepare restaurant-style desserts at home. That makes desserts even more special when dining out. However, dieters may want to skip dessert if the dessert offerings are limited to high-calorie, sugar-laden offerings. Dieters who simply must indulge in dessert can split desserts with fellow diners or opt for low-calorie fare such as fruit. Dining out is incredibly popular, and dieters don’t have to avoid their favorite restaurants.

DID YOU KNOW? Prospective real estate investors who hope to buy, hold and rent out their investment properties should first interview potential property managers before buying homes. While it’s possible to find property managers willing to manage single-family homes or duplexes, the financial resource Bankrate.com notes that many property managers prefer to manage large apartment complexes instead. Managing properties is hard work, and without skilled property managers on their side, real estate investors may become overwhelmed by the responsibilities of taking care of their real estate investments while simultaneously trying to maintain their own residences. Before buying investment properties, prospective real estate investors should interview various local property managers or property management firms, inquiring about their fees and what is included in those fees. If the cost of hiring property managers drastically cuts into the profits investors hoped to make off their investment properties, they might be better off looking to invest their money in areas other than real estate. Prospective investors can compare the potential return on investment after the cost of property managers has been factored in to the return they might get from more traditional investments to determine if investing in real estate is a sound financial decision. It didn't contain the words "under God," though, until 1954, when they were added by an act of Congress in an attempt to check the creeping advance of "Godless Communism."

Shanna Butler: Why I Call Honeoye Home By Amanda Dudek

S

hanna Butler and her husband of 13 years, Michael, are happily raising their two children in the town of Honeoye just as her parents, James and Bonnie Sykes did before her, and her grandparents did before them. Shanna has come full circle to relive the best parts of her childhood from the other side as a gift she is giving to her own children. “We moved to Honeoye when I was in the 1st grade,” she shared, noting that her parents wanted to live closer to family. The community was already a familiar one as they would regularly visit Shanna’s paternal grandparents there on the weekends. The wonderful school district was a benefit, too. “My parents volunteered all the time, especially for the school,” Shanna said of her parents who sit on the Board at the Little Lakes Community Center in Hemlock. “When we moved to Honeoye, my parents jumped full bore into the school. My mom started working as a TA in Special Education and in the community.” Her parents’ involvement had a profound impact on Shanna. “Any community organization my parents could get involved in, they did,” Shanna said. “Anything my mom could get involved in to help kids at Honeoye, she did. Our home became a second home for several kids, and my parents were like their second parents.” Perhaps the most important impact came from James and Bonnie Sykes’ involvement in school theatre. “My mom was the director of the school’s plays,” explained Shanna. “My dad was the major set builder. My brother, sister and I all participated, as well. We ate dinner together every night because we were all involved in the same thing. I was very fortunate.” “My parents were such an important part of my extracurricular activities and things that I loved; they weren’t just spectators,” she continued. “I saw my parents every day all day long. At the end of the day, I could come to what I love – the theatre – and my parents were both there. That really stood out to me.” After graduating in 1998, Shanna decided to study theatre at the University of Buffalo, something of a family tradition, from which she graduated in 2004 Shanna Butler with degrees in musical theatre advocating for kindness! and dance as well as health and human resources. “During that whole time, my sister, brother and I would come back and help with the shows, lighting, hair, makeup, choreography,” shared Shanna. “I stayed very connected with the town and school, even moving back home for a time when I graduated.” Shanna soon met and married Michael Butler, and the two lived elsewhere for a time. It wasn’t long, however, before they found themselves moving to Honeoye. “My parents converted their home into a split level, and we moved in with them,” said Shanna. “I also opened a dance studio.” Much like her mother had several years before, Shanna quickly became involved with her children’s school, a school she knows and loves. “I work as a TA there,” she said. “I wanted to be involved in things at my kids’ school. I liked the small-town feel growing up and was very fortunate because my parents have always been extremely loving and involved in everything. I want that for my kids, too.” Shanna certainly makes many positive contributions. She is the president of the PTA and the dance instructor for several local students. She works in theatrical productions at the school, participates with the Honeoye Community Players group which includes planning the annual Honeoye Hometown Holiday events,

working closely with the school administration to bring new events to the school, participating in her children’s current extracurriculars and much more. “My parents always told me your school is only as good as you make it,” she stated. “I want to be a part of my kids’ education and the town of Honeoye, continuing to form those bonds that were so integral to my growing up here.” Children, as always, remain central to what Shanna does. “Children are my life. I value them so much,” she explained. Shanna recognized that current circumstances could make this a trying time for children and their families. “It is a different and new time for everybody,” she said. Shanna’s message to families today is one of encouragement. “Just be gentle with yourself during this time,” she advised. “Allow yourself to make mistakes and ask questions. Get outside, get some fresh air and do school later. Remember, you are not alone, and you can ask for help. You don’t have to be the best. Just do what you can and live in the moment.” “I love that our community helps and pitches in whenever we can. My kids are seeing this right now,” added Shanna. “This moment is history in the making.”

STEPS INVOLVED WITH ESTATE PLANNING Medical directives. In addition to a will, estate planning includes your wishes if you become incapacitated or suffer from a serious medical condition that precludes you from making decisions about your care and finances. Spouses can be named to make important health decisions, but you may want to indicate other information, such as life support measures or organ donation, as well. If you have strong opinions on treatment, medical directives and living wills are a necessity. VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.

FOOD MART

1 Main St. • Livonia LEAVING A JOB GRACEFULLY Speak with your manager first. It’s respectful for your immediate manager or supervisor to learn of your departure first. This gives him or her ample time to put a plan in place to fill your position. The more notice you can give, the more goodwill you’re building on your way out the door. Schedule a meeting for this purpose; do not make it an informal chat by the water cooler. Resist the urge to quit via email or text. Resigning requires face-toface communication. Present a concise letter of resignation as well. Don’t call out colleagues or air your grievances in the letter.

BOOST ENERGY AT THE OFFICE Eat a productivity-friendly lunch. If afternoons are when your productivity really starts to drop off, it might be time to reconsider what you eat for lunch. The body, which converts the foods we eat into glucose that energizes our brains and promotes alertness, processes different types of foods differently. So the food you eat for lunch may affect your energy levels for the rest of the day. For example, eating pasta provides a quick burst of energy because pasta releases glucose quickly. But that burst is often followed by a noticeable downturn in energy levels sparked by fading glucose levels that make it difficult for the brain to focus. In contrast, fruits and vegetables aid in the production of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that helps the brain stay motivated and engaged. Including some fruits and vegetables in your lunch or snacks may just lead to a more productive workday.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.

TAKE A CUE FROM SUCCESSFUL WOMEN Women had another successful year in 2015. According to the Fortune 500 list, 2015 tied the record set for the highest number of female CEOs in America’s largest companies by revenue. Twenty-four women, including Mary Barra of General Motors, Meg Whitman of Hewlett-Packard and Ginny Rometty of IBM, made the list. Although women make up 45 percent of the labor force and only 5 percent head Fortune 500 companies, women are making greater strides than ever before. For example, in 1998, just one woman led a Fortune 500 company, according to Pew Research Center.
